The great Live Journal Outage of 2005

Postby justin » Thu Jan 20, 2005 12:34 pm

For those people who use LJ and who like reading all the gory details about how the site works, there's a post mortem of the outage over the weekend here

The short explanation is, power was lost because another of Internap's customers decided it would be a good idea to press the emergency power override button, switching off all power to the floor.

It took so long for them to get everything running again because they were being very paranoid checking there was no corruption in any of their databases and because they had some faulty hardware.

Right well I've just picked up an LJ myself. Yay for free accounts, though I had trouble posting the other day when I really wanted to post. Not part of the great power outage, but frustrating none the less.

So here it is incase you want to take a look at my personal rants. Plus it links to my website.

Discussion topic: unwanted persons learning about your blog

Postby Gatito Grande » Fri Jun 17, 2005 11:00 pm

So, has this happened to anybody?

My mother has learned---from a busy-body priest (I don't know), no less---that I have a blog.

Now, she wants me to tell her where it is (assuming I even trust her, that she hasn't seen it already: between Google and the busy-body, it's not like she can't find out. She has internet access, obviously---just in the past year. And learned---somewhat anyway---what a blog is!).

How do people deal w/ unwanted folk showing up on---or just knowing about---your blog?

Parents?

Siblings?

Exes?

Bosses?

Co-workers?

What do you do? Delete the sucker? Edit it? Say "screw it, I don't care: let 'em read it if they wanna?" Say "Hi, mom!"

GG Desperately looking for imput (Now, can I be sure she won't follow the link on the blog TO the Kitten?) Out

And yes: I'm Very OUT on my blog, and I'm not out to my parents. Long, sad story . . .

There's no need to delete your blog, that would be pretty sad. I think you should just change your name or any reference to your real life that she'd be able to find in google. Otherwise don't change anything and she'll never read it. If she does, she won't know it's yours.

Good luck with that! Gosh, what a nightmare!

Well, she (my mom) is refusing to let this go, so it looks like, after putting it off for 19 years, I'm going to have to (one way or another) Come Out to her . . . :yikes

GG Say a prayer (nice thoughts, good karma, whatever) for me, Kittens? In my unemployed state, I'm financially dependent on 'em, so I could get cut off, too. Out

Wow, GG. I wish you the best if you do have to come out to your folks. Sucks that it's sort of being forced this way. On the other hand...perhaps it's for the best? I hope it all goes well.

Things like that are kind of why I don't have anything like a blog anywhere. What would I talk about? Things I don't really want people I know to read, because I'll be bitching about them. So who, then, would read my blog? And if no one's going to read it, I might as well just keep a pen-and-paper journal or keep everything on my computer. Heh, then I'd have to worry about someone finding that, too. Oh well. Bleh.

GG, I'm sorry to hear about the whole ordeal, I wish you all the best!

Although I don't have to worry about my parents finding out about my blog (my mother doesn't even know how to turn on a computer), lately I've become very paranoid about some of my older more narrow-minded high school friends (whose parents still have connections to mine) stumbling across my blog and telling the world about it. I understand your predicament, it's practically like my nightmare come true.

Many blogs now have a "friends-only" function that protects them from public access, and if that doesn't work, you can always change the username so if your mother do happen to find it, she can't prove it's yours. Don't delete it for her sake.

I hope everything goes well in the end.

GG, can you make individual posts "Friends Only"? Some of my friends even have "sublists" of "friends only" posts, so that even if someone is on the friends list, they can't see the post if they aren't on the sublist.

I suppose I ought to put my own up here. I'd love to meet more Kittens, and I tend to lurk here more than I post anymore.

Some pictures are worth...

Postby Ben Varkentine » Wed Aug 17, 2005 2:10 pm

First of all, this isn't mine but there is a brilliant and hilarious blog post here--

http://www.positiveliberty.com/2005/07/ ... x-gay.html

It's by a young gay man who reprints a composite of several letters he's gotten from people who want to save him from his homosexuality. The horror, the horror.

He replies by posting photographs of himself and his husband and their life together. It's really eloquent.

Second, I have a new blog up now: http://varkentine.blogspot.com/

It's a lot like my old one (except I've figured out how to post pictures now), stoking the fires of my obsessions: Music, movies, the media, politics, real women, Anne Hathaway, cartoons, taking the piss out of George W. Bush, heckling right-wing christians, television, and, of course, obscure '80s pop references.

You know, the usual. Drop by if you want, and leave a note if you do.

I thought this might be fun for you bloggers and LiveJournal-ers to try: It's an online quiz to determine just how "girlish" or "boyish" you are. I myself am, apparently, only 20% Boyish but 80% Girlish.

To which I say, cool...

PS: I'm shamelessly going to make you go to my blog to get the link. You see, it's all part of my master plan.

Well, what's the point of having a LJ if nobody reads it?

So, here's my LiveJournal, which is mostly about job hunting at the moment, but there's some other stuff too, if anyone's interested.

Feel free to read & comment if you want to :)

Right. So here's my myspace...

I don't update my livejournal much anymore because an ex's new boyfriend reads it and makes fun of my feelings...so I try to avoid it.

But that's my myspace, it's all I really keep tabs on anymore.

So yah.
