Cinderella: The Alternative Tale (updated 23rd January 2007)

Postby kindagay » Thu Feb 02, 2006 10:16 am

Hello dear, sweet kittens :wave

Now, for those of you who are reading TRD and/or White Dove, you may have noticed that there hasn't been an update for a while - I've been suffering from writer's block, coupled with computer problems & some RL stuff.
However, a month or so ago, I was watching Ever After (Drew Barrymore - :drool) at the same time that I was considering a possible ending to White Dove, which, somehow, led to a vague idea for a possible future scene in TRD. Anyway, these factors all contributed to & inspired the creation of this new little fic of mine.

That was a long babble, I promise I'm gonna get to the actual story soon, just as soon as I've got all the disclaimers & stuff out of the way...

-----------------------------------------------

Author: Jeanne (aka. kindagay)
Rating: It's a fairy tale - fun for all the family
Disclaimer: All things BtVS related & Cinderella related belong to people who are not me; I own nothing, not even a castle, or a horse named Chestnut
Feedback: I'm addicted to the stuff :D
Setting: Once upon a time, in fairy tale land...
Summary: Well, it's the story of Cinderella, but, Cinderella only has a tiny bit part, 'cos our girls are involved in a love story all of their own...

& so, without further ado, I give you....

Cinderella: the Alternative Tale

Chapter 1

I am sure that you are familiar with the story of Cinderella; you have heard about the wicked step-mother, the horrid step-sisters, even the fairy godmother; you know all about the great ball that was organised in the hope that Prince Charming would find a suitable wife. You were probably not, however, aware that the Prince’s parents had a back up plan. If the Prince had not met and fallen in love with Cinderella at the ball, it had been arranged that he should marry the only daughter of King Ira and Queen Sheila of the Sunny Dale. Of course, as is the case with many arranged marriages, the princess, whose name was Willow, was not in favour of this plan.

Princess Willow was not at all what you would expect a princess to be, and certainly not what a princess ought to be. She was terribly uncomfortable in the elaborate corsets, gowns and jewels that she was made to wear; she detested having to squeeze her feet into tiny, delicate shoes which nipped at her toes. She was constantly restless from having to sit all day being elegant and lady like and was prone to wandering off in search of adventures and games to play, only to return late in the evening with her clothes torn and muddied and her shoes either damaged or misplaced.

“It is simply unacceptable.” Willow’s father had commented exasperatedly one afternoon when the princess had been found climbing trees in the orchard. “Willow is a princess, and she should act like a princess, not like a rambunctious boy. When she was a child people were willing to turn a blind eye to her behaviour, but now that she has turned sixteen it can no longer go unchecked. I fear that marriage is the only solution, I am certain that a good husband shall put an end to her boyish tendencies.”
“Yes dear.” The queen agreed, knowing that, no matter how ludicrous this idea was, trying to discourage her husband would be futile.

“Oh, bother!” Willow, who had been listening at the door, stamped her foot in frustration and ran down the stairs towards the servants’ quarters.
Being that it was the middle of the afternoon, all of the servants were busy preparing for dinner and so the servants’ quarters were completely empty. Willow wandered into the kitchen, but unfortunately everyone was far too busy to even notice that the princess was there; everyone that is, except the stable boy, Alexander, who was sneaking around trying to steal apples and carrots for the horses.

“Alexander.” Willow called to the dark haired boy, who instantly dropped the small red apple that he had just picked up. “Alexander have you seen Tara anywhere? She is not in her room and I do so need to speak with her.”
“Oh, it’s just you; I thought you were cook scolding me for taking her precious fruits. Can I give this apple to Chestnut?”
“What? Oh, yes of course, as long as you keep that horrid beast far away from me.”
“He’s no beast, he‘s the gentlest horse I have ever met.”
“Well then he must just not like me very much. Never mind that now though, I need to find Tara.”
“I saw her sneaking into your father’s library a short while ago.”
“Thank you Alexander.” The princess turned on her heel and set off for the library.

--------------

Tara Maclay was the daughter of Willow’s nurse; the two girls had known each other since they were eight years old. When Willow’s first nurse had resigned from her post, she advised the King and Queen to replace her with a nurse who had experience of caring for a boy, as well as a girl. Elizabeth Maclay arrived from a neighbouring kingdom six days after word of the nurse’s vacancy was spread, with her two children, Tara and her older brother Donald, in tow. Being a kind and generous King, and considering the fact that, following several tales about the mischievous princess, nobody else had shown any interest in the position; Ira had immediately employed Elizabeth as Willow’s new nurse and had even offered free accommodation, for her and her children, at the castle.

From the moment the young princess had met Tara she was fascinated by the timid girl. It was something about her smile, Willow had surmised, she had a beautiful smile. And nice eyes too, deep, twinkling blue eyes and long soft golden hair. Several seconds after making her initial conclusion, Willow amended her thinking, it was not just her smile; it was everything.

Ever since that very first day Willow and Tara had been practically inseparable. This had delighted the King, who believed that, by spending time with another young girl, Willow would learn to behave more like a proper little girl. Of course, that had not been the case; for whilst Tara had encouraged the princess to pay more attention to things such as music and art lessons; so too had Willow’s nature caused Tara to become much bolder and more adventurous than was acceptable for a girl. They complimented each other so perfectly that they quickly became the very best of friends. So close was their relationship that it did not matter one dot to them that one was a princess whilst the other was the daughter of a servant; when they were together, they were equals.

--------------

“Tara! Tara! Tara, my dove, where are you?” As she searched desperately amongst the stacks Willow wished, for the first time in her young life, that her father did not own quite so many books.
“My lady, hush. I am right here, but you must hush or we shall both be in trouble, neither one of us has leave to be in here.”
“I fear that being found where I ought not to be is the very least of my worries. I am already in so much trouble; Tara my father has gone quite mad.”
“My sweet Princess, I am sure it cannot be so bad. Tell me the problem and we shall deal with it together.”

Willow dropped down onto the loveseat next to Tara, resting her head in the girl’s lap as she had done so many times before.

“My father means for me to be married. All because I was climbing to pick a peach in the orchard, it is a ghastly punishment if you ask me, not that anybody would ask me of course.”
“M-married? But, when? To whom?”
“I have no idea, as soon as possible and to someone horrid I should imagine. Father said that a husband shall make me act more like a princess. Oh Tara, whatever shall I do? I would simply hate to be a boring, girly princess, I like me just the way I am.”
“As do I my sweet.” Tara absently stroked her fingers through Willow’s soft red hair. “Whoever shall I grow old with if you are married?” Tara mused sadly.
“My beautiful dove, do not ever speak that way, I shall not marry, not ever. You and I shall always be together Tara; I give you my word as princess of this kingdom.”
“But, you cannot disobey the King, even if he is your father.”

Willow and Tara fell into a dejected silence for a short time, each contemplating the unfavourable implications of the Kings’ proposal. Quite out of the blue the princess sat up, filled with a sudden rush of determination and conviction.

“Tara, is it not true that I am very well known for getting myself into various scrapes and troubles?”
“Yes, that certainly is the case.”
“And is it not also true that I am rather proficient at getting myself out of said scrapes and troubles?”
“You do have many years of practice my sweet.” Tara chuckled as Willow stood up with great purpose, her ‘resolve face’ firmly in place.
“Then I, Princess Willow Rosenberg of the Sunny Dale, shall endeavour to remove myself from this terrible predicament in which I am currently found, in the most effective manner that I can conceive of. I trust that you, my most faithful and beautiful companion, shall assist me?”
“Of course my princess, you know by now that you need not even ask.”

A small commotion outside the library doors disturbed Willow and Tara from their discussion.

“Come Tara, let us vacate to your sleeping quarters where we shall not be disturbed, we need to devise a plan.”

The two girls promptly departed the room through a secret back entrance, which was cleverly concealed behind a large dummy bookcase, making their way, hand in hand, down a stone staircase and towards Tara’s room.

Well, because I don't know you as well as Irene does, I shall refrain from calling you "sweet-ums", but I really do like this story! I am a sucker for turning conventions on their heads, and this tale looks like it will do that very nicely!

Loved this line:
My father means for me to be married. All because I was climbing to pick a peach in the orchard, it is a ghastly punishment if you ask me

Obvoiusly men are wonderful, but marrying one would be a punishment in my world too! :lol

So, I am eagerly awaiting the next eposide in this fairy (heh!) tale!

Hey honey, :kiss

Yay!!! You posted it, you posted it!! I can't tell you how pleased I am - you already know that I think you write superb stories and I really do think this one is gonna be a great hit!!

I'm not surprised to see you're already getting positive feedback from lovely kittens :)

Willow in this story is so wonderfully endearing - I won't give anything away, but I need to let you know that it comes across so enchantingly that our cute redhead is the heart of this story, yet you weave the tale such that she doesn't take away any value from the other characters.

I'll be eagerly waiting for every update - I find reading the posted version quite thrilling.... and as a whole I just love this story SO much!! Well done sweetie :clap :bow

Oh btw, um, in your intro at the top of this post you sorta didn't tell the kittens if/when you'll be updating TRD/White Dove.... you just kinda babbled cutely like Willow :D - I mean I totally get it, what with me having RL stuff to deal with too... Um, but you might wanna conclude about the status of your other fics for your readers, yes sweetie? (feel free to do so with another cute babble - hee hee) :) :flower

Can't wait to read more of this enchanting fairy tale :love

Wow. This is a great start! I like how Tara and Willow are already really close. I know that with Willow's quick wit and Tara's guidance, they will get Willow out of the arranged marriage. I love the dialogue. I can hear them saying it and it is captivating. I look forward to the next installment of this.

I'm kind of all new to this game & now understand how important f/b is. Having said all that, I really enjoyed the beginning - utterly delightful.

“Tara, is it not true that I am very well known for getting myself into various scrapes and troubles?”
“Yes, that certainly is the case.”
“And is it not also true that I am rather proficient at getting myself out of said scrapes and troubles?”
“You do have many years of practice my sweet.”

I love the rapport you've set up between the girls.

Looking forward to more.

Jeanne, *sigh* I am so sorry that I'm late with the feedback...because I really do love this story. I'm a big fan of the movie Ever After and I think you've done a marvelous job in capturing the feel and mood of that setting.

And how cute is it that Willow's such a Tom Boy? :lol I can just picture her scampering around and getting dirty climbing trees :-D

and this part made me giggle...there was just something about Willow calling Tara "my dove." :lol sweet.... :|

“Tara! Tara! Tara, my dove, where are you?”

But poor Willow and Tara....Willow must be married? WHY? *sob* I don't want Willow to get married....cause I think she should marry Tara!! OH why!! Cruel, cruel world!!! :cry

when will we get more of this marvelous tale?? and I'd also like to put my vote in for an update to both TRD and WD...please? :flirt

Hi kitties, :wave

Okay, I really, really wanted to post an update for you all yesterday, but, I've had no access to the internet for two & a half days, which sucked.
I want to say a huge :flower Thank You :flower to everyone who left feedback, it means so much to me & I promise that I'm gonna do replies tomorrow.

But right now, I really wanna post this update for you & I hope that you all enjoy it.

Oh, & for those of you wondering about TRD & White Dove - unfortunately, I'm still kinda blocked on them both, but I'm gonna try to get something done soon. Hopefully, this story will tide you over until I can get back to my other fics, but I promise that I will get back to them.

--------------------------------------------

Chapter 2

“Willow.” Tara’s mother had found the two girls early the following morning, lying fast asleep together in Tara’s bed. “Your father wishes to speak to you immediately.”
“I regret that I must depart.” Willow sighed. “But I shall return to you forthwith my dove.” Willow placed a soft kiss on the back of Tara’s hand and woefully left the room.

The princess ran to the King’s study, making sure to visit her sleeping quarters on the way, in order to collect her green velvet robe to throw over her undergarments, which she had fallen asleep in.
Willow approached the large oak door slowly and with much trepidation. Taking a deep breath, she gathered all of her resolve and knocked boldly at the solid wood. Receiving a bellowed command to “Enter” she pushed open the door and took three steps into the large room.

“Father, you requested my company?”
“Where have you been Willow? You were not in your room this morning.”
“I, uh, I awoke in the early hours and decided to take a walk around the gardens.”
“You were in the gardens wearing only your under garments?” The King enquired, taking in his daughter’s appearance.
“No father, I was preparing to bathe when I heard that you were searching for me; that is the reason for my current attire.”
“Willow, I need to talk to you about your behaviour.”
At her father’s words, Willow gave a large, discomforted gulp as if she had just swallowed a marble.
“As I have told you on many occasions, your behaviour is unacceptable for a young lady, especially a young lady who also happens to be a princess. I have tried many strategies to rectify your disobedience, all of which have failed; as such I fear that I am left with only one option. I have had word from the King and Queen of our neighbouring kingdom, they are searching for a wife for their son and I feel that perhaps if he were to take you as his bride this would cure you of your unladylike behaviour.”
“You mean that ghastly Prince Charming?”
“Willow, you have never met the Prince.”
“That is true, and I am aware that I have no grounds to claim that he is ghastly; in fact I am sure that the Prince is perfectly pleasant and sociable; however, what with the Prince being uhm, male, I can image that being married to him would be a rather ghastly affair. Are there no princesses who wish to be married? I would much rather marry a princess than a prince.”
“Willow, princesses do not marry other princesses, they marry princes.” The King explained exasperatedly.
“But why father?”
“Because that is how the law and nature say that things ought to be.”
“When I am in power I shall pass a law that allows every person to marry whomever they choose, regardless of gender.”
“I honestly have no idea where you get such preposterous ideas from Willow. You shall be saying next that servants should be allowed to marry royalty.”
“I see no reason why they should not. If two people are in love why should they not be permitted to marry?”
“Love? My dear girl, marriage has nothing to do with love. Now stop this nonsense at once, you shall marry Prince Charming whether you like it or not.”
“But father, that is not at all fair. What does my mother have to say about this?”
“Your mother is in complete agreement.” The king answered curtly. “I am sorry that you feel I am being unfair, but you really have left me with no other choice. I have arranged that the prince and his mother should visit us on the morrow, they will arrive at the stroke of nine in the morning and I expect that you will be suitably attired and on your best behaviour. Do I make myself clear?”
“Yes father, I understand.” Willow responded; her voice and lower lip trembling with despair.
“Very good.” The King was a little surprised by Willow’s sudden acquiescence. “Well then, you are excused.”
“Thank you father.” Willow gave a small curtsy and promptly left the study.

--------------

“Prince Charming? Oh, how simply perfect Willow.”

Tara, for some explicable reason, was rather excited by the new piece of information which the princess had just relayed to her.

“I fail to understand how any part of this could possibly be described as perfect my dove.”
“Do you recall my brother’s friend Cinderella?”
“The one who calls him Buttons? Yes, I recall her, why?”
“Cinderella resides in our neighbouring kingdom and she informed Donald of a great ball which has been arranged in the hope that Prince Charming shall find a wife. All of the ladies in the kingdom who are of noble birth shall be in attendance.”
“You mean to say, that my father has offered my hand in marriage, and the prince to whom I am intended is hosting an elaborate gathering in the hopes of finding someone else? How utterly impertinent of him.”
“What does it matter that the prince is in search of an alternative bride? You have no desire to marry him do you?”
“Certainly not!” Willow insisted vehemently.
“Then I fail to understand your distress my sweet?”
“It is the principal of the matter Tara; I do not appreciate being the second choice.”
“My sweet, you can be infuriating at times.” Tara chuckled good naturedly. “Do you not see how we can use this detail to our advantage? If the prince were to find his match at the ball, you shall no longer be required to be his wife.”
“Thus, we must locate Prince Charming’s true love and ensure that she attends the ball.” The princess continued, finally understanding Tara’s proposal.
“Precisely!” Tara gave an enthusiastic nod.
“There is just one minor flaw in our ingenious plan my dove. How are we to know who, or indeed where, Prince Charming’s true love is?”
“Mamma.”

--------------

It was a little known fact, that as well as being an accomplished nurse and a wonderful mother, Elizabeth Maclay was something of a witch.

Now, I’m sure that you are thinking, as people tend to think when witches are mentioned, that she must have been terribly ugly, possibly even disfigured, with hairy warts and wiry, untidy grey hair. You probably also suspect that she danced around a cauldron making scary bubbling potions, flew around on a broomstick and turned people into toads.
If that is indeed what you are thinking then I must tell you that you have been grossly misinformed about witches.

Elizabeth was quite beautiful, with a soft friendly face, a kind smile, twinkling hazel eyes and long brown hair which was always tied back into a neat bun. She was rather proficient at mixing various herbs and things together to make healing lotions and medicines and had a rather inexplicable ability to ‘visualise’ a persons soul mate, when, of course, she set her mind to do so. This could, perhaps, be the reason why she was not at all surprised when she had discovered that her daughter’s relationship with Willow was fast progressing far beyond a close friendship.

“Mamma.” Tara called breathlessly as she ran into her mother’s sitting room, where Elizabeth was busily darning socks.
“We need your help.” Willow concluded Tara’s thought, looking to her nurse expectantly.
“And why might we be so out of breath my children?”
“We ran here.”
“You were running in the castle? I rather suspect that you two girls quite enjoy getting yourselves into trouble.”
“There is no rule forbidding running in the castle.”
“Just because you choose to ignore it little princess, does not mean that the rule does not exist.”
“Do you intend to scold us Nurse? Because we are in urgent need of your assistance and a scolding would be rather inconvenient at this moment.”
“No Willow, I have learned that scolding you would have very little effect, besides, I am sure that there are worse things you could be doing than running in the castle. Now, what is so urgent that you need my help?”

The two girls settled themselves on the floor at Elizabeth’s feet and Willow proceeded to explain her predicament, whilst Tara relayed the details of their plan.

“So, you wish for me to discover who Prince Charming’s soul mate is?” Elizabeth clarified at the conclusion of the commentary.
“And where she is also.” Willow added impetuously, which brought about a gently scolding look from Tara. “If it is not too much of an inconvenience.” The princess added politely.
“You shall have to bring his majesty to me.”
“That should not be a problem.”
“Very well, I shall do what I can.”
“Oh, thank you Nurse.” Willow flung her arms around Elizabeth in an enthusiastically grateful embrace.

The rest of the morning, before Willow had to go for her lessons, was spent working out the specific details of the plan. After Willow’s lessons, she, Tara and Alexander wandered down to the boating lake where, to begin with, they were leisurely floating along on the water. After a short time however, Alexander and Willow decided that trying to capsize each other’s boats would be much more fun, naturally they both ended up sat in the lake, drenched and muddy, whilst Tara sat, dry and safe, in her boat chuckling at her friends’ antics.

Hell yes, I'm still digging this story! This story is incrediblely sweet and funny. Just the way I like it. Plus, bonus points for using Ever After as well. Although, I'm sure the whole wedding scene in the movie will be quite different than what I'm sure awaits us.
As for the plans, I love wacky crazy (well, theirs isn't so wacky crazy so much as too simple to actually work without a hitch) plans that are sure to backfire one way or another, and to throw in our little lovebirds, it's bound to be spectacular!

So, yeah, update as soon as you can! :-D

Oh, this is such an adorable story!

Because that is how the law and nature say that things ought to be.

Pfffttt... Laws are overrated. Yay anarchism! :bounce Seriously, Ira reminds me of Londo Mollari : Love, what the hell does marriage have to do with love. Of course, being a princess, poor Willow'd have to play along with her father's political game. :( Noble houses have been expanding their sphere of influences through marriage since the dawn of the time. Just look at the Habsburgs.

“When I am in power I shall pass a law that allows every person to marry whomever they choose, regardless of gender.”

Let's hope Willow gets to power pretty darn quickly.

You shall be saying next that servants should be allowed to marry royalty.”

Well... :-D

And prince Charming, ugh... If there's anything I've learned from watching Shrek it's not never trust princes, especially if they're named Charming. :) Now, Princess Charming, that's an entirely different thing altogether. :x

Great story!

I'm still here, and I'm still liking this! The picture in my head that this prompted:
Willow placed a soft kiss on the back of Tara’s hand
is just lovely....

Nice, nice, nice. So witty and pretty and gay. Willow as tomboy princess - adorable. And Tara as ladylike nurses daughter - handsome. Mostly loved the end with Willow and Alexander being mutty and Tara being dry. Oh, and sure Willow has to be Queen soon. Maybe she could rule all across the world?
She's not drivin stick anymore?

Woot! An update! excuse me while I do the "Jeanne-update" dance!

:dance *booty wiggle* :dance *clap, clap, clap* :dance and *turn*

Yes! Wonderful update! I only wish that we had been there for the falling asleep together part. :-D

Willow's father was funny with his; "walking in the garden in your undergarments" comment. :lol

Willow's father seems like he's worried about her though...but at least he's not completely unreasonable about the whole situation...it's more like he really want his daughter to be like other princesses...but he still loves her even if she's not. At least that's what I got out of their conversation....

The "My Dove" endearment still cracks me up! :lol

I LOVE THIS FIC!

Hello sweet kittens :wave

Okay, as promised, here I am with replies to Chapter 1 feedbacks. All of your sweet words mean so very much to me :) Thank you :flower

----------------------------------

Irene: Yay! to you for being 1st, but you shouldn't tease the other kittens sweetie :)
Hi sweetie, :wave I'm okay, how are you?

I'm glad that you like this fic, & you're hooked already huh? That's cool!

Yeah, I have a soft spot for tomboy Willow too - I have 2 older brothers & no sisters, so, I was always something of a tomboy too :)
I'm glad that you liked the "my dove" endearment, & I'm especially pleased that it caused a non-vanishing smile :)
Yes they will grow old and live happily ever after
Of course they will. :)
Quick question, do Tara and Willow know they like like each other or do they still consider themselves to be the bestest of friends?
I imagine that they both know that they adore each other & want to spend their lives together, but, it feels so natural to them that the whole being gay thing hasn't really registered with either of them - if that makes sense?
I hope you enjoy Willow's plan & of course Tara agreed to help - she trusts her princess implicitly. :x

--------------------------------

Candleshoe: Don't worry, terms of endearment aren't necessary, I'm just happy that you're enjoying my story :)
I love turning conventions on their heads too (obviously, or I wouldn't be writing this story) & I agree, having to marry a man would be something of a punishment for me too :lol

----------------------------------

Emms: I feel the need to paraphrase a Friends quote...
"Tell me if this is too cute, lesbian fairy tale, chicken breasts" :lol
I'm happy that you're so excited about this new story :)
Reply to your proper fb is further down this post

------------------------------------

DarkWiccan: :thud Wow! I'm kinda star struck, DarkWiccan likes my fic :bounce :D
I hope you continue to enjoy it :) Thanks for the fb

-------------------------------------

WFB: Hi honey :kiss
Yep, I posted - thanks for the encouragement :)

I love how insightful you are - you know stuff about this fic that I hadn't even figured out :) Yeah, I guess Willow is the heart of this fic, but I'm glad you feel that she doesn't take anything away from the other characters.

Thanks for asking about my other fics - as I've said, I'm still kinda blocked on them both, but I'll try to get back to them soon.

ILYB-d
:heart :x

------------------------------------

eirnlove: I'm glad that you're enjoying it :)

-----------------------------------

Willow~Rosenberg: I'm glad you like it &, I was a little worried about the dialogue, so, I'm glad that you like it :)

------------------------------------

taralicious: :lol, your fb make me chuckle
Thank you, that's a very big compliment :)

------------------------------------

AlysonGoddess: I hope I updated soon enough for you - enjoy chapter 2

-------------------------------------

Bug23: Thanks, enjoy chapter 2

-----------------------------------

Emms: No worries about the late fb sweetie - I'm just happy that you're here :)

Yep, Ever After deserves a YAY! - even if it's just for Drew Barrymore in pretty princess dresses :drool I'm glad that you feel I captured the setting well :)

Yeah, tomboy Willow is very cute.

Hmm, 'my dove' made you giggle? I was going for sweet & romantic, but, I guess funny is good too - right? :paranoid

Yes, unfortunately, according to King Ira Willow must be married. Unless that arrangement falls through, & then he'll have to think up some new plot to get her to behave more like a proper princess.
I don't want Willow to get married....cause I think she should marry Tara!! OH why!! Cruel, cruel world!!!
Don't worry, this is a fairy tale, they'll all live happily ever after.

Well, you've already got a second installment of this story, & as for TRD & WD, I'll try to get back into the flow of writing them, but, I can't promise when I'll have updates ready. Sorry sweetie.

----------------------------------

Okay, that's all the replies done - I hope you're all enjoying chapter 2.

Hugs
Jeanne

Oh this is wonderful! Willow and Tara are going to engineer Cinderella and Prince Charming's 'fairy tale' meeting? I can't stop grinning at the thought - the fairy tale classic happening as the stories say, but with Willow and Tara running around behind the scenes making sure it all goes to plan :lol

I really like the characterisations you've set up - a lovely mix of reality and fairy-tale. Willow is delightfully full of life, forever getting into trouble, and Tara's serene, amused acceptance of her girl's playful exuberance. But most of all the unhesitating, complete bond between the girls, which you've shown so clearly - it really brings a smile to my face.

Hello sweet kittens :wave

Chapter 3 of this little fairy tale of mine is almost complete & should be posted some time tomorrow, but for now, I have replies to C2 feedbacks.
A big Thank You to everyone who's reading & commenting - your words of encouragement mean so very much to me :flower :)

-------------------------------------------

Missocki: I'm happy that you're still enjoying this story of mine. :)
I do have an incling of an idea for the 'wedding scene' & it will indeed be rather different from the one in Ever After - I hope you enjoy it.
it's bound to be spectacular!
:blush Well, I'm not sure about spectacular, but I hope it meets your expectations :)

---------------------------------------------

Irene: Hey sweetie :wave
I'm so glad that you're enjoying this fic :)
Yeah, Tara's mom's great - I'm enjoying writing her character.
Yeah, Willow is adorable, & I think that everyone should have their own tomboy Willow :)
And yes, when Willow becomes Queen of her Kindom, anyone will be able to marry whomever they fall in love with...that shall be her first decree.
Absolutely! :x

-------------------------------------------------

Useful_Oxymoron: Big yay! for anarchism :lol
Let's hope Willow gets to power pretty darn quickly.
Don't worry, Willow will definitely change things for the better when she's crowned Queen.
Ah, Prince Charming's not so bad, he's just, not right for Willow, & I agree that Princess Charming's are definitley better :)

---------------------------------------------------

Candleshoe: I'm glad to see you're sticking around & still liking this little tale of mine :)
& yeah, that was a pretty sweet image :x

---------------------------------------------------

sacinema:
So witty and pretty and gay
Oh yay! That's one of the best things anyone could have said. :D
I'm so pleased that you like my story & I'm sure the world would be so much nicer if Queen Willow (with Queen Tara's help, of course) ruled it all :)

----------------------------------------------------

Emms: Oh wow! My update's have a dance? A dance that involves booty wiggling? :D That's so exciting! I feel so special & important now. :bounce
Yeah, watching our girls falling asleep together would have been sweet - I think I can probably arrange for them to fall asleep together again. :)
Yay for undergarments! Uhm... that sounded less dirty in my head :blush What I meant, was yay for Ira's undergarment comment, not for actual undergarments... although, they are nice too, &, uhm, I think I should stop now :blush
Willow's father seems like he's worried about her though...but at least he's not completely unreasonable about the whole situation...it's more like he really want his daughter to be like other princesses...but he still loves her even if she's not
Oh, that's exactly what I was aiming for - I'm glad that I managed to get that point across :)
I still don't understand why "my dove" = :lol? :confused

-----------------------------------------

Artemis: Oh yay! Artemis likes my story! :D
the fairy tale classic happening as the stories say, but with Willow and Tara running around behind the scenes making sure it all goes to plan
Yep, that was the mission statement :)
Thanks for the sweet words, they really mean a lot to me :D

----------------------------------------

Okay, that's all the thank yous for now, I'll be back tomorrow with chapter 3.

Chapter 3

Postby kindagay » Fri Feb 17, 2006 7:12 am

Hello dear, sweet kittens :wave
How are you all?

As promised, I have returned with an update & also a big Thank You :flower to Artemis for my very pretty title graphic

Image

Chapter 3

“It is too early to start the day Nurse; I would much prefer to stay in bed. I like my bed, my bed is warm and soft and there are no silly Princes in it either.”
“I should sincerely hope that there are not little Princess, however, on this day I cannot allow you to remain in slumber, your father shall deny you your right to the throne if you are not in the study at the stroke of nine. Come now my child, I have drawn you a hot bath.”
“It is so unfair!” The princess pouted in protest.
She reluctantly climbed out of her large four poster bed and clumsily removed her night gown as she stumbled across the floor.

Soft, lively wisps of steam danced whimsically through the air as they broke free from the heat of a half filled tin bath which sat before the stone fireplace, where a small fire popped and crackled soothingly. Willow stepped first her right foot and then her left into the small metal tub and winced as the water stung her skin.

“I would much rather have been frozen awake, than scolded awake Nurse, please could you add a jug of cold water?”
“The water is not so hot Princess.” Elizabeth argued even as she emptied a white jug of cold water into the bath. “Is that more to your liking my child?”
“Yes, thank you Nurse.”

After her bath, as Elizabeth aided the princess in getting dried and dressed in one of her finest – and, as far as Willow was concerned, most annoying and uncomfortable – gowns, Willow shared some of her thoughts and worries about their plans.

“What if we are unable to locate Prince Charming’s true love before the ball? We have only one week to do so.”
“Have faith my child, all shall be as it is meant to be.”

After a short silence, Willow continued with her thoughts.
“It is not that I am entirely opposed to the idea of marriage, just to the idea of marriage to a Prince, or to any man for that matter. Father makes it sound so very unappealing; he says that love has nothing to do with marriage.”
“Perhaps that was true for him; it does not, however, mean that the same will be true for you.”
“Did you love your husband, Nurse?”
“Very much so my child; he was a very good man.”
“I am sorry that he passed away, I know that Tara misses him so and I should have liked to have met him.”
“I am sure that he would have adored you.” Elizabeth smiled affectionately at the young princess.

Following a hearty breakfast, Willow made a brief visit to Tara’s room for some necessary moral support; which took the form of an extended, warm, gentle embrace; before making her way to the study with mere seconds to spare.

--------------

“Presenting her Royal Highness Queen Gertrude and his Royal Highness Prince Charming of Amberdale.” The young footman announced formally.

The Queen entered proudly through the large oak doors, her head raised with self importance, her whole manner clearly conveying that she would settle for no less than complete attention and compliance.
The prince lagged reluctantly behind his mother, his head lowered petulantly. Willow smiled as she realised that the young man was not in the least bit happy to be there.

“Ah, Queen Gertrude, your presence is, as always, like a ray of sunshine.” Willow’s father gushed flatteringly.
“Ira, you are looking well.” The Queen seemed less than enchanted by Ira’s grovelling.
“And this must be your son? He is a very handsome, strapping young man. May I present my daughter, Willow.”

Upon hearing her name, Willow mindlessly took a small step forwards and curtseyed politely.

Gertrude glanced speculatively towards the princess; it was clear from the Queen’s false smile that Willow barely met her high standards.
“Yes well, I suppose we cannot all be blessed with great beauty can we now; and those are hardly child bearing hips. She is rather a poor specimen; however, my husband is indebted to you and it will not do for my son to still be unmarried when he turns twenty-one next month; so, assuming a more desirable match is not found at the ball, your daughter will suffice.”
“Forgive me for my ignorance, but your husband failed to inform me about a ball?”
“It was my son’s idea, not at all to my approval but his father over-indulges him. The Prince still entertains the childish, naive notion that one should marry for love, he seems to think that he has a soul mate and that she will somehow magically appear if he hosts a ball.”
“I understand completely, Willow continues to believe such nonsense also.”

By this point in the proceedings Willow had grown weary of being insulted and belittled and so she decided that it was time to put phase one of her plan into action.

“May I be excused father? Perhaps Prince Charming would accompany me in a stroll around the grounds whilst you and Queen Gertrude talk?”
“Yes of course, you two should become better acquainted if you are to one day be married.” Ira was more than delighted to see his daughter taking some interest in the young Prince.

--------------

The two young royals walked through the castle in a slightly awkward silence until they reached the gardens, at which point they both stopped and turned to speak.

“I feel I should apologise for my mother’s harsh words against you; she can be a little difficult to please.” Prince Charming explained politely.
“Think nothing of it.” Willow gave a small smile. “Is it true that you believe in soul mates?”
“I do, though my mother frequently tries to tell me that it is all nonsense.”
“My nurse would say that your mother only does that because she herself never found her soul mate.”
“Your nurse would probably be correct. Forgive me if I appear too forthright princess, but would I be correct in assuming that you are quite against the idea of you and I being married?”
“It is not anything against you Charming, is that your real name?”
“Sadly yes, although I prefer to be called by my second name, Henry.”
“Very well. You see, the thing is Henry, I too believe in soul mates and I also believe that I have already found mine and, well, it is not you.”
“Well that is a relief.”
“Yes, quite.” At this moment Willow decided to abandon the planned ‘coincidental’ meeting with her nurse in favour of a more direct approach. “Henry, I would like for you to meet my nurse?”
“Your nurse? What an odd request princess.”
“Trust me it is for a worthy cause and all shall become clear in time.”

The prince and princess hurried through the gardens until they caught sight of Elizabeth sitting on an iron bench by the side of the pond. She was reading from a small, leather bound tome, which Willow instantly recognised as being one of her nurse’s magic books.

“Nurse, nurse!” Willow called out breathlessly as she frantically waved to the older woman.
“Good morning princess.”
“Nurse, may I present Prince Charming.” Willow introduced her companion.
“Your majesty.” Elizabeth gave a graceful curtsey and held out her hand to the prince. “It is an honour to meet you.”

As Henry took Elizabeth’s hand in greeting, she whispered a small incantation and glanced into the prince’s eyes.

“I am happy to make your acquaintance.” The prince returned the nurse’s gesture with a warm smile, completely unaware of the small spell which had just been cast. “Your young charge was rather impatient for us to meet.”
“Willow is impatient about most things; she has more energy than she knows what to do with.”
“I can imagine that keeps life very interesting for you.”
“Indeed it does.” Elizabeth chuckled. “How are you enjoying our kingdom your majesty?”
“Sadly I have not seen enough of it to form much of an opinion; the castle and grounds however are extremely quaint and charming.”

Just then, the nurse caught sight of Tara, who was curiously and anxiously stood waiting beneath a tree at the other side of the large pond.

“If you will excuse me, I think that my daughter wishes to see me.”
Elizabeth gave another small curtsey and, as she departed over a small wooden bridge to meet Tara, Willow and Prince Charming made their way back into the castle where some light refreshments were served prior to the prince and Queen Gertrude’s journey home.

Are we still all enjoying it? I do hope so. :)

Yes I'm still enjoying it!!! And may I just say- :bounce
I'm glad to hear that Henry is just as unhappy as Willow is. And seriously though-

"Yes well, I suppose we cannot all be blessed with great beauty can we now; and those are hardly child bearing hips. She is rather a poor specimen; however, my husband is indebted to you and it will not do for my son to still be unmarried when he turns twenty-one next month; so, assuming a more desirable match is not found at the ball, your daughter will suffice.”

What the HELL?!?!? Not great beauty? That Queen needs to get some glasses! And rude much? In the words of the extremely prettyiful Willow "RUDE-O!"

I'm really enjoying this story. This is just what I needed after a hard day and college. Thanks for that. I am curious to see what Tara's mother has done with the spell. Perhaps something do determine what his heart desires? I am looking forward to reading more.

Hi Jea! :applause

How could you even ask if we are still enjoying?? [/shock]

I read this story-- your updates, and I am instantly transported into a magical realm of romance and white horses. (okay, so maybe not so much with the white horses...but the romance...Ahhhh the romance [/dreamy expression]

I love the update, I was sad though that we didn't get to see any Willow/Tara kind of interaction this time around...as much as I love Elizabeth, she's definitely not a substitute for Tara... :shock What? You say the story must progress and that it cannot be sustained on sugary Willow/Tara moments alone?? well...I beg to differ...but since I am not the genius behind this wonderful tail....errr I mean TALE! I'll just shut up and leave the writing to you. :-D :happy but I want to see some Willow/Tara moments next time...and I want to laugh and be amused when Willow calls Tara "My Dove" again. Got it missy!? :smash

hehe, just teasing sweetie. I think you are doing a spectacular job with this story...it's so engrossing and shiny! Please, more soon?

Also... of course your updates have a dance. It's just a shame that you can't see me doin' it. :-D

Jeanne, hi :wave

I love the Drew Barrymore movie, so when I read the title of your fic I just had to read it. I'm sorry I didn't leave feedback erlier, but I've been a little busy lately.
What can I say about your story...I love it. I can't help laughing at the way Willow and Tara talk and relate to each other. And the way you write Willow's father made me imagine him as a short, fat man dressed in velvet-y clothes with a little moustache and a huge crown on his head...that was hilarious.
I can't wait to read more. Thanks for sharing this.

Well, I've just gotten caught up on this lovely fairy tale. Econ homework be damned! :-D

Jeanne, you've done a wonderful job of capturing the fairy tale feel. Tomboy Willow smitten with sweet shy Tara is just too cute for words.

Looking forward to the hijinks that are sure to occur.
