I thought the doctor's reaction to the prime ministers action was a little too righteous.

I saw it as the PM giving an order to kill a defeated enemy and isn't that murder? The Doctor isn't above killing an enemy for the right reason but senseless killing is something that would always anger him.

Just saw the new Who.

Freaking awesome! It is so great to have Who again.

I have to admit that David Tennet is going to make a great Doctor. He has all makings of one so far. Seems to be a bit of Tom Baker with Sylvester McCoy and Patrick Troughton. Funny most of the time, deadly serious when needed.

The new season looks great! The Cybermen are my favorite all-time Who monster.

I finished reading the second batch of Ninth Doctor books recently and hopefully the producers of the show have read 'Only Human' and picked up a few fashion tips: Jack in plastic trousers and a muscle shirt and Rose in a fur bikini. :-D

I'm reading the Eighth Doctor graphic novel Endgame at the moment which includes a lesbian companion, Fey Tuscott-Sade. :-D

Dont forget that the whole Torchwood/ use of, thing was a sly comment on the Belgrano incident in the Falklands conflict of 1982. That has been debated ever since - whether the cruiser was heading away from the exclusion zone, or whether it still posed a threat to UK forces.........

Mind you destroying the space ship, and leaving no survivors to carry the tale seems somewhat counterproductive if the intention was to demonstrate Earth ability to protect itself.

Yes I caught that, but something I didn't understand was what happens to Harriet now? In World War III the Doctor says that Harriet will serve 3 terms as PM leading Britain into a new Golden Age but in TCI it seems that she's on her way out. Does this mean that he's changed history or that his 6 words failed? Could it mean that every time the Doctor interferes he is changing history?

Just found this thread, prepare for some rambling... *clears throat*

As a member of the 'younger generation', Christopher Eccleston was my very first Doctor and as a result I was VERY upset to lose him, and preparing to loathe David Tennant, just because he replaced 'my' Doctor.

After seeing TCI, I am overjoyed to say that I was WRONG. :-D Chris was a great Doctor, but David is THE Doctor, IMHO. "Sorry, that's the Lion King" is my absolute favourite line in recent TV/film history. :lmao I cannot wait for the official series 2 to start... 'spring 2006' seems so far away, even though it isn't! :sob :bounce :bounce :bounce

And as for Torchwood... waiting for it is gonna be unbearable, 'autumn 2006' really is so far away. :sob I love Captain Jack, one of the best (if not the best) bisexual characters in TV history and insanely funny in his own right; if anyone can carry a spin-off, it's him!

I agree, I think David is perfect too and Capt Jack is great. My Doctor is Tom Baker but I think I may well like DT as much. I can't wait for the new series. :D

Possible bad news for US fans though about the box-set. This was posted on OG earlier today.

Doctor Who - The Doctor calls in sick - Season 1 delayed
Posted by Gord Lacey 1/10/2006

Earlier today we received a report that Doctor Who may be delayed from the planned Feb 14 release date. We checked with the BBC PR company, and they checked with BBC and were told that there were "complications" with the set, and it wouldn't meet the release date. This doesn't surprise us since nothing with this release has gone according to every other BBC title. The release was announced, yet the Warner Home Video (their distributor) press site had nothing about it for weeks, then once it was added to the press site it still wasn't available to purchase. It could be that the delay was simply caused by the slow process of getting the title information out to retailers, or it could have been delayed due to ongoing negotiations with a US broadcaster (the series hasn't been shown in the US yet). We called Warner Canada to find out if the title will be delayed as well, and while Warner Canada hadn't received a delay notice, they expected to receive one given the delay in the US.

Maybe they're delaying it because they're working on a TV deal? Or maybe they're just having problems with production. Hopefully we'll hear more soon.

Definate good news this time!! From OG News

At long last... America will finally get the first season of the new Doctor Who television series, according to a press release on the official Doctor Who website. The US-based Sci-Fi Channel, owned by NBC Universal, has secured a deal to broadcast the 13 episodes in America starting in March, beginning on what Outpost Gallifrey believes is likely March 17 (the week after the season finales of the popular "Battlestar Galactica" and two "Stargate" shows), at 9:00pm Friday nights, and it will likely conclude at some point in mid-to-late June in time for Sci-Fi's summer premieres of those shows. The press release notes that Sci-Fi has an option for series two, likely to be acted upon after initial ratings come in.

In conjunction with the announcement, the press release also mentions the delay of the US DVD release of the first season, now rescheduled for July 2006 to follow the final broadcast of the show's first season. While no official announcement had recently come, speculation persisted that the DVDs had been pulled from their original February 14 release date. However, interestingly, the release of the DVD set is listed in Canada on Amazon.ca for February 14, perhaps indicative of a possible Canadian release on that date and having the US release follow five months later.

I seem to have been watching Doctor Who forever, Jon Pertwee being 'my' Doctor for a long time, in fact I was just getting used to Tom Baker when he left after 7 years as the Doc. Now I don't really have a favourite but some Doctors I prefer more than others and I'd definitely include David Tennant with the ones I prefer.

"Sorry, that's the Lion King" is my absolute favourite line in recent TV/film history.

As soon as I heard that line I knew I had to watch the Lion King. It's now part of Doctor Who!

Cannot wait for the new series. And not only do with have Torchwood but the word is that Captain Jack will appear in Series 3. As long as we get more Omnisexual Adventures in Time and Space I'm happy. :-D

Oh and congrats to you US peeps for finally getting the series! :applause

Has anyone heard anything about The Christmas Invasion being released on DVD?

We have a multi-regional DVD player so we purchased the first season of the new series from Send-It.com and really enjoyed it. I know it will be awhile before we can get the second season, so I'd love to get the Christmas show to help tide us over.

Thanks!

The Christmas Invasion is going to be released as part of the Season 2 DVDs, so the first of the vanillas with TCI and the first one or two episodes of the new season will be out in May, but no TCI with special features until the box set at the end of the year.

There's a picture of Tony Head from the Sarah Jane Smith episode in Doctor Who Magazine. I don't know if this is a spoiler, but...

Spoiler:
He looks seriously scary. He's not playing one of the good guys obviously.

Here's a NYT article about the show:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/03/05/arts/ ... ref=slogin

They talk to Russell T. Davies about his sexuality, the sexuality of the Who fan base, the Who-fan character on the original Queer As Folk, and his "gay agenda." Personally, I really appreciated this...
So when the BBC approached Mr. Davies in late 2003 to update "Doctor Who" for the 21st century, he was already teeming with ideas. "It's a genuine love of mine," he said, "and loving a program means you're not blind to its faults."

Tell it, brother. And, of course, Captain Jack...

And few if any eyebrows were raised when later episodes of "Doctor Who" introduced a character named Jack Harkness, a starship captain from the 51st century whose roguish banter implies that he is not merely bisexual, but omnisexual. "It felt right that the James Bond of the future would bed anyone," said Steven Moffat, the creator of the BBC sitcom "Coupling" and the writer of the Captain Jack storyline. "He's far too busy saving the universe to worry about which brand of genitals is best." In fact, Captain Jack proved so popular that the character was granted his own spinoff series, "Torchwood," now in preproduction.

With the SciFi Channel announcing that Season 3 of Battlestar Galactica won't start until October, there's been speculation about what will fill the 10pm Friday time slot when SG-1 S10 and Atlantis S3 start in July. Outpost Gallifrey wonders whether the new Doctor Who season will fill that spot, provided that the run of last season's episodes does well enough in the coming weeks.

Nothing confirmed, but it's an interesting possibility... :hmm

Wow.

That's nine pages of Who I had to catch up with, after watching the SciFi premiere tonight!

It's kind of weird (gloat now, Brit Kittens :blush), to get to know a new Doctor . . . only to learn that I'll soon have to get to know another new doctor. :crazy

From the commercials, I recognized Christopher Eccleston (but couldn't remember his name, bugger all)---especially from his performance as "Iago" in that modern day Othello that appeared on Masterpiece Theater a year or two ago. He brings a rather frenetic quality to the Doctor, which is not unwelcome.

Rose I found a little harder to get a handle on. Interesting to read the gushing on this thread for her: the actress (Billie Piper?) is unfamiliar to me.

Since we're tripping down memory lane: I am a fairly longtime Whovian, but not a real die-hard. I went through a phase in the late 80s, watching Who on PBS, wherein I developed a real fondness for Peter Davison (who -ahem- I know is not the most popular Doctor). More than that---I was newly out then---I developed quite a thang for Tegan (the "Saucy Aussie" I called her! :flirt). OK, now that I'm again giving my Old Fart props... :-D

Anyway, nice to see it again. Since I had that timeslot dedicated to BG anyway, I'll just continue to make it "appointment TV" on Friday nights!

GG Very much looking forward to the upcoming queerness in (time and) space! :pride Out

Oh, about this being a "British" show: coulldn't agree more---then again, that's always been it's charm (the "Cheeky/Doesn't take itself seriously" quality). Very much glad to watch w/ the closed captions on though: when will the Brits learn to "speak English, not whatever it is they speak in..."?! :lol

She first appeared on the scene as a pop star - the "British Britney Spears," if you can believe that. But unlike Britney, she can actually act.

That's why I thought it was funny that they played "Toxic" in "The End of the World" - they should have played one of Billie's old songs instead.

*sigh* Still no word on when we get series 2? Oh well. We got the Torchwoord casting announcement, that's something. I assume that's already been posted here - I haven't read through all the replies since I last ventured into this thread!

As a side-note, I was about 8 when Billie started her singing career, and remember thinking she was the best thing since the Spice Girls. In hindsight I suppose she was only really appealing to little girls, so, like everyone else, when it was announced that she would play Rose I was skeptical. But of course she did fabulously, and the rest, as they say, is history.

In what's very much a good news/bad news scenario, three of this year's seven nominees for Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form) at the Hugo Awards are Doctor Who episodes:

DRAMATIC PRESENTATION: SHORT FORM
Battlestar Galactica: "Pegasus" (NBC Universal/British Sky Broadcasting; Directed by Michael Rymer; Written by Anne Cofell Saunders)
Doctor Who: "The Empty Child" & "The Doctor Dances" (BBC Wales/BBC1; Directed by James Hawes; Written by Steven Moffat)
Doctor Who: "Dalek" (BBC Wales/BBC1; Directed by Joe Ahearne; Written by Robert Shearman)
Doctor Who: "Father's Day" (BBC Wales/BBC1; Directed by Joe Ahearne; Written by Paul Cornell)
Jack-Jack Attack (Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar Animation; Written & Directed by Brad Bird)
Lucas Back in Anger (Reductio Ad Absurdum Productions; Directed by Phil Raines; Written by Phil Raines and Ian Sorensen)
Prix Victor Hugo Awards Ceremony (Opening Speech and Framing Device; Written and performed by Paul McAuley and Kim Newman; Directed by Mike & Debby Moir)

I say it's good news/bad news because the three episodes could very well split the Doctor Who vote, leaving Galactica to pick up its second straight trophy. We'll know Labor Day weekend. Worldcon is in Anaheim again this year, so I may go.

Meanwhile, the ratings for last Friday's SciFi premiere weren't up at the same level as Galactica and the Stargates, but they were still respectable. Let's hope that holds up.
Now there's something you don't see every day... unless you're us...
