Um...I thought the romantic aspects of the movie were well done...but few and far between. There could have been more interaction

Agreed, Emms. After seeing them almost get going in the flowershop, I felt a little bit cheated that there wasn't more of a real Love Scene.

That said, still a very cute movie.

GG I think my favorite line, though, was Rachel's mom going off on Cooper: "He'd shag an open wound!" :lol Out

I'm going mad with not seeing this. It is so frustrating when you live in a hick backwater like Britain...

Well, I just saw it the other night at a local theater downtown. It was a small theater, and it was only playing on one screen at 9:45 pm, but still I was surprised (and happy) to see it playing here at all. I think there was a total of six people in the theater, all women.

As for the film itself...Okay, the movie was a bit predictable. It's a romantic comedy after all, and they all end the same way. :luv2 It's nearly impossible to avoid cliches in this genre. Even Shakespeare wrote his share. Heck, he probably invented them.

Still, the film is better than most romantic comedies, thanks to the clever dialogue, well drawn characters & good acting. (Considering this is the first film made by writer/director Ol Parker, that's pretty impressive.) There's a sprinkling of funny scenes throughout the film that give it a British sitcom feel, but that's a good thing in my opinion. I didn't really buy the instant "clicking" of the main characters at first either, but Perabo & Heady's chemistry make it work. The other actors were hilarious, particularly Matthew Goode & ASH as Rachel's husband & father. I also liked the little sister in the movie, who managed to be precocious without being annoying or creepy.

Overall, it was very sweet & charming. I think I'll go see it again if it's playing next week.

Well, after watching Date Movie on Friday, I watched this on Saturday. Sadly, I think there were only about four other people in the cinema, which is a criminal shame. This movie deserves a heck of a larger audience!

I found myself pretty much grinning the whole way through, even through the angsty bits (because I knew there was a happy ending). ASH was a riot, especially since it seemed to me that his character seemed mildly sloshed most of the time. Not suprising, given his wife's normal behaviour.

I have to say I felt sorry for Hec (the husband) though. He was a really decent guy who just copped the short end of the stick unfortunately. However, the end left him with some hope, so that's okay.

All in all, great movie, and I can't wait to get it on DVD.

Cheers,
Paul.

Favourable write up in today's Sunday Telegraph here. A nice interview (with a lovely pic) of Lena Headey, and some stuff about how it isn't a gay film, or Flowergirl Mountain, it's just a love story.

Now to see whether it makes it to a cinema near me...

I too just saw the film for the first time this evening (with, I'd just like to note, an almost exclusively 'straight' audience that had no idea what it was in for) and agree that - if this were a 'straight' romantic comedy it would be a Hugh Grant/Sandra Bullock type of film. In a way, that's what makes it great - someone finally took this basic formula, turned it on its head a bit - and still produced a very likeable and fun film. No offense to Perabo or Headley (who were both marvelous), but if (like Brokeback Mountain), this film had two more famous names in the lead parts, I've no doubt it would be a huge hit. As it stands, it is nice to see something different for a change.

As for my fellow audience members - I hadn't heard so much laughter and there was even a round of applause at the end. That probably impressed me most of all.

Not a good one for remembering dialogue - there's quite a few great insults from Rachel's mum in this one - but I did like the line about the meaning of lilies: I dare you to love me. A Nice touch.

It probably won't make the rounds in the major theaters, but look for it on DVD in a few months. Definitely worth owning.

I just read online that Lena Headey, who plays Luce in this movie, is filming a pilot for CBS. It's called Ultra, and is based on a comic book of the same name.

She'll play a super-hero named Pearl Penalosa. It's a good comic. I'm looking forward to the pilot.

Saw the trailer tonight in my local(ish) cinema. They only trail if they are actually showing it at some point, and I was so excited that I giggled hysterically for a good portion of the film I was actually there to see.

I can't wait...which is slightly disoncerting. It's almost like I don't have a life....

It did sound a little, um, "interesting" in the trailer :lol

As long as it is better than Renee Zellthingy's attempt, it'll be fine.

It's slated to come out on general release on the 16th June, Sasha. Justin reckons above that Cineworlds are showing it, and it was a Showcase that I have seen the trailer in twice now. I think there is a Showcase and a Cineworld in Nottingham, so hopefully it will turn up during June. It's the kind of thing that Heat magazine would pick up and run with, so they may even be offering free tickets. I shall keep my eyes open!

Yep, there is indeed a showcase and a Cineworld [Cornerhouse.] here.
And I saw the preview for it 2 weeks ago, when I went to see "Take the Lead" and there is a poster for it in the foyer at the Cornerhouse, Sasha and it says coming in June. I cannot wait!!

After a fair bit of waiting and the stupid distributors knocking the release date back 3 months in the UK, I finally got to see this tonight and I thought it was lovely. For those of you who do get a chance to go and see it, it's worth it for some great comedic moments and snappy one liners. And Lena Headey in a vest is just all kinds of sexy. What? I'm just saying..... ;-)

I went to see this tonight too, after much excited bouncing for months, and it is now my new second favourite film.*

It was sweet and soppy and poignant and sad and hopeful and not at all porn-like. I was expecting something with lots of gratuitous snogging to attempt to appeal to the straight male film-watcher, but I was wrong (unfortunately :lol).

And Piper's accent wasn't actually that bad. My friend turned to me afterwards and said "That accent wasn't bad - she sounded like you" which either tells you something about my accent, or my friends!

* Fried Green Tomatoes became my favourite film at some point in the mid 90's and hasn't yet been shifted off the top spot.

Glad you enjoyed it Candleshoe. I was quite impressed with her handling of the accent as well, though more impressed with the dancing I have to say :)
I had to put up with my wonderful other half pointing out during various points in the film that she'd been to crime scenes in half of the locations shot in the film and giving me an account of each incident. It's quite disoncerting watching a film when someone keeps pointing out "I did a burglary there, oops, that was a GBH, mugging etc etc." Bloody forensics lot for you! :lol
Still it didn't detract too much from my enjoyment of the film, I did think it was really sweet, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. And the DVD should be winging it's way to me soon as well so I'm laughing :)

Ooh, Boomstick, I used to live around there! I don't think that was the place that was burgled though, and the SOC officer was a burly bloke...which I guess your other half could be! :paranoid

Anyway, that was off-topic so I'll try to shoehorn the film back in: Your DVD would be from the US, right? It's not released here yet for a while surely?

Yeah it'd be the Region 1 DVD which I think is out on the 27th June. I have a friend on holiday in Canada and she said she'd bring me back a copy on her return, if not there is always playusa which I have found to be really quite reasonable for import DVDs. Not found a release date for the Region 2 copy yet, though I would imagine it'll only be a few months away as the window between theatrical and DVD release seems to be diminishing all the time as a rule.
And I may be sad and go and watch IMAY again tonight as I'm at the flicks for another screening and could shoehorn in another viewing as I'm still on holiday for a few days. God bless the Cineworld unlimited cards! :)
And just to clarify, trust me, my other half isn't a big burly bloke ;)
