N.B. I know that plagarism is very bad. SO I have to confess that in this part I have plagarised myself. See if you can spot where
Chapter 14 – Broken Hearted“On a lighter note there was a rather unusual proposition put towards the Mars parliament today. One of the landmarks on Earth has always been Mount Rushmore, A monument showing some of America's presidents. Today an MMP suggested that we build a similar monument showing some of the great presidents of Martian history. This proposition was widely criticised with cost being the main objection, however there are some who believe that this would be a fitting tribute to Mars' culture and history.”***
The training centre for the Mars space agency was situated to the south of the colony. It was spread out over a wide area, comprising of central, large building surrounded by a group of smaller buildings. The central building was a C shape, surrounding a large courtyard, which is where the prospective astronauts gathered.
Captain George Peters stepped out onto a balcony overlooking the courtyard, followed sharply by David Allen, his first officer. He gazed at the people below a while, sizing them up before saying, with a certain amount of disdain, “So these are the people who the Agency think will get us to Alpha Centauri. They don't exactly look as if they have the right stuff.”
“They do look like the dregs of the Agency,” David said.
The captain leant against the railing and asked,“So who have we got?”
“Okay the woman standing off to the left is the spoiled brat. She's just here because daddy helped with building the ship. Next to her is gene freak number one, she's an engineer. Some sort of super genius apparently”
“She flew the prototype didn't she?” George asked, his expression dark.
“Yeah. Next is the oddball, he's a medic. Then you've got the loner who's the navigator, gene freak number two who's the pilot, Shorty who's going to be doing any space walks and the twins who are astronomers.”
“Lovely.” He shook his head looking skeptical about the people below, “Well let's go and meet them.”
***
After being introduced to each other the group went through to the cafeteria in order to have some breakfast. As Katherine entered Simon Jones, the one who would be doing the space walk, stood up and said, “Let's hear it for the first Martian to break the light barrier.” Almost everyone in the room began applauding, with a few standing up.
The cafeteria was busy so the affect was quite overwhelming to Katherine who raised a hand and said, “Uh, thanks.” Wanting to get out of the spotlight she quickly grabbed a chair and sat down.
It turned out that the seat was next to Samantha Malovich, who was looking at her breakfast with an unhappy expression, “Well this is nice.”
“You better get used to it. The food on the ship is going to be worse,” Katherine said before prodding at her food, looking uncertain about eating it.
Samantha sighed, “Well I knew what I was getting into. I mean a chance to see Alpha Centauri is worth a little discomfort.”
Katherine thought about pointing out that it would be more than a little discomfort, but decided against it. “Yeah, I guess it is.” Katherine smiled, “I mean I wouldn't be here if I didn't think so.”
Samantha took another bite and sighed again, “Have you ever been to Luna?”
“Yes,” Katherine said, her head bobbing up and down, “Sandra and I went for our honeymoon.”
“That's lovely. So you'll know how much of a change this is.”
“Yeah, you have my sympathies.” Katherine patted Samantha's arm.
“Thanks. So when you were on Luna, did you see any of the sights?”
“Oh yeah, we went to one of their shows.”
“Shows? I meant the Sea of Tranquility, or the site of the first moon landing.”
Katherine looked embarrassed a moment, “Oh yeah, so did I.”
“Oh, you meant the pussycat girls.”
Katherine nodded.
“Nothing to be embarrassed about, most people who got to Luna do.” She glanced slyly at Katherine a moment, “So you like seeing the ladies stripping and dancing round in clothes that epitomise the concept of less is more.”
“Uh, um, no comment.”
Samantha decided to be merciful and getting out a data pad and said, “I notice that I'm not listed as having any responsibilities.”
“Well I think that's kind of because you're seen as being a passenger.”
“Oh. But I've got a degree in engineering and I want to help.”
Katherine shrugged, “You should talk to the captain then.”
“Yeah, I will.”
Katherine studied Samantha a moment, with a thoughtful expression, “You know you're not what I expected.”
“What did you expect?”
“Uh, I was kind of expecting for you to be spoiled. Sorry.”
“Don't be.” Samantha grinned, “I am.”
“Oh. Well I guess Ada was right.”
Samantha looked intrigued by this, “Why? What did she say?”
“That I'd like you.”
Samantha smiled and said, “Funny she said the same thing to me about you.”

As Paul and Karen got dinner ready he said, “I was just thinking, you know how we've got a spare room?”
Karen gave her husband an exasperated look, “You've already got one games room.”
“I wasn't going to suggest that.”
“Oh, so what do you want to turn it into?”
“Actually I was going to say that Sandra is probably going to be lonely when Katherine's away so why don't we invite her to stay over.”
“That's a good idea. She could probably use the company and I can go over my new play with her.”
“I'm sure she'll like that.” Paul said in as a flat a tone as he could manage.
“Was that sarcasm?”
Paul looked as though he were offended by the suggestion, “Of course not.”
“Well good. I think that she will really like this one.”
“Oh, this is the one I haven't been allowed to see?”
“Exactly.”

Katherine quickly moved to stop the overload that was building in the ships engines. Rolling her chair over to another control panel she shut down two of the generators before going back to the main controls to check the status. She noticed a power spike but was able to stop it from reaching the engines. Seeing that things were starting to get back under control she gave a sigh of relief, only to see two more, larger power spikes. She tried to divert them but was too late. Almost immediately one of the engines failed, giving off a power surge. Then the others began failing in an avalanche. A few seconds later the simulation shut down. A door opened and Captain Peters came in. “Well done, you just killed us all.”
Standing up Katherine gestured angrily, “What the hell was that? That last power surge, that couldn't happen.”
“We're supposed to be training to deal with unexpected situations. That's the whole point of the simulation.”
“There is no point to it if you're going to use bogus data into it. Garbage in garbage out.” Katherine rarely got angry but this was one of the few occasions that she found herself losing her temper.
“That will do.” George said quietly.
“You're right it will.” Turning Katherine stormed out of the simulator.

Finding Katherine in the lunch hall Samantha sat down next to her saying, “I understand that you're having trouble with the captain.”
“You could say that.”
“You're not going to quit are you? I mean I hate to sound selfish but you're only person here who'll talk to me.”
“No, I'm not going to. It's just...”
“Yes?”
“We're supposed to be training how to take the flight and deal with any problems, that's what the simulations are supposed to be, situations we might face during the flight. It's not supposed to be the sodding Kobiashi Maru.”
Samantha nodded then said, “Forgive me for saying this but the captain doesn't seem to like you very much.”
“No he doesn't. I guess it's because I'm bioengineered.”
“Well he is rude to the other bioengineered, Damien, as well but I think it's more than just that.”
Katherine thought about it then said, “You're right it is. I'll have to ask him about it.”
“Do you think that he'll tell you?”
“Only one way to find out.” Katherine answered with a shrug. Leaving the mess hall she wondered if this was really the right thing to do. She tried to bolster her confidence by telling herself the direct approach had worked with Megan.
***
George looked up as a shadow fell across him, “I thought that you had quit the project.”
“Huh, you wish.” Katherine snorted.
“Actually yes I suppose that I do.”
“Now this is exactly what I wanted to talk to you about. What have I done to offend you?”
“Tony,” George said simply.
For a moment Katherine didn't know what he was talking about, “What about him?”
“What about him?” George shouted, his cheek flushed red. Calming a little he said in a quieter tone, “He's dead because of you.”
“What? No he's not.”
“Right, you decided you wanted the glory of breaking the light barrier and you discredited him in order to get the chance.”
“You know you really need to get your facts straight before accusing someone like this. Tony's dead because he made the mistake of dating a psychopath with strange mind control abilities.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Crystal, Tony's girlfriend. It's clear that it was her who made Tony kill himself, just like she made him break a bottle over the back of my head and she most likely made him mess up the first attempt.”
“Do you expect me believe that?”
“Hope, yes; expect, no.” Not waiting for a response Katherine turned and left.

Karen had just loaded her play up so that she could start working on it when the door bell rang. Suspending her computer she got up and answered it. There was a small man there who bowed and said, “I'm here representing Ms Amber. I'd like to talk to you about your play.”
“Sure come in.” She led him through to the living room where the man got a small device out of his briefcase and placed it on the coffee table. As he turned it on a hologram of a young, golden haired, woman appeared standing next to the table.
“Hello, I'm Amber.” The woman said, bowing in the same way her agent had.
“Uh, hello.” Karen said, with a shocked expression.
“You seem surprised.”
“Uh, forgive me but I thought that you had been deleted.”
“No, rumours of my deletion had been exaggerated. Though I did fall out of the public eye after being replaced by newer AIs. It seems there is only enough room for a few AIs on the public stage at a time so when new ones are produced, the old ones are forgotten about.”
“I guess that must suck.”
“In some ways. However I have spent the time studying various subjects including various schools of acting. Which brings me to why I'm here. I want to try out what I learned by appearing in one of your plays.”
“You want to act in a play?” Karen said, not sounding as if she believed it, “You want to act in one of my plays.”
“Yes and yes.” Amber tilted her head, considering Karen's response, “Is it so hard to believe?”
“Actually yes.”
“Well I am being completely serious.”
“Oh well I'm working on a play at the moment, I think there's probably a part which would fit you.”
“Excellent. I'll get my people to get in touch with you.” With that the man, who had been silent the whole time stepped forward and switched the projector off.
He then put it away and said, “Goodbye.” Before leaving. Karen restarted her computer and went back to her play, still feeling mystified by the whole encounter.

When Katherine got home she went in shouting, “I have had the worst day ever.”
Coming out to meet her Sandra asked, “Why, what happened?”
“Oh, it's just the captain has serious issues. The main one being that he's a jerk.”
“I'm sorry to hear that, but this might cheer you up,” Sandra held up a letter then said, “At least I hope it will, I haven't read it yet.”
“What is... Is it the test results?”
Sandra nodded. She beckoned Katherine over, who approached with a look of excitement on her face. Sandra opened the envelope and they both quickly scanned the contents of the letter.
For a few minutes neither of them spoke.
“I'm sorry,” Katherine said, her voice cracking, “This is my fault.”
“What? No, of course it isn't.”
“But it's my freaky DNA that's the problem,” Katherine argued.
Moving her hand to Katherine's chin and moving her face to look at her she said, “Katherine, this isn't your fault.”
“I'm sorry, but I think I need to be alone for a bit.” Katherine turned and walked towards the stairs.
“This doesn't change anything,” Sandra said. As Katherine stopped and turned to look at her she went on, “I mean, don't for a moment think this changes how I feel about you.”
Katherine nodded, then went upstairs.
Going into the kitchen Sandra screwed up the letter and threw it into the waste unit as hard as she could. Not gaining any satisfaction from this she kicked the door of a cupboard, then twice more for good measure.
Then, sitting down, she started crying.

When Paul got home from the agency Karen greeted him by telling him her news.
“Uh, Amber, I don't think I remember the name.”
“She was in the latest version of Lord Of The Rings and the remake of that film about the vampires from that small Greek island.”
Paul was going to point out that that wasn't what the film was about but then he realised who Karen meant, “Oh yeah, now I remember her. I thought that she'd been deleted.”
“So did I. Apparently not.”
“Well this should be fun.”
“Yeah, as long as she doesn't get all prima dona-ish. Anyway there was something else that I wanted to talk to you about.”
“There was?”
“Yes. Next week Katherine will have to move to the station won't she?”
“Yes. She won't be able to see Sandra after that.”
“Well we should have a party the night before. Give her a proper send off.”
“That's a good idea. We should invite some of the other people from the project.”
Karen looked doubtful a moment, “That would include Anne wouldn't it.”
“Yes. She is Katherine's friend. I know that you don't get on but don't you think this grudge has gone on long enough?”
Karen sighed, “I guess I can put up with her for one night.”
“Good. Thanks.”
***
The next day, sitting in the simulator Katherine tried to keep her mind on the controls but all she could think about was the contents of the letter. There was only a twenty percent chance that her and Sandra's DNA could be combined to produce a viable embryo. Worse was the fact that even if they did create a viable embryo there was only a ten percent chance of the child surviving to term. She was snapped out of her thoughts by an alarm sounding. A quick look at the readouts showed they were suffering power surges. She recognised it as being the same problem as yesterday. Not feeling up to dealing with this, or the captain should she fail to prevent a catastrophic failure she began shutting down the generators, knowing this would prevent any dangerous surges. Her hand hesitated a moment over the life support control, before powering it down.
“Katherine, what exactly are you doing?” The captain's voice came over the intercom.
“I'm shutting down all non essential systems until the power network can be fixed.”
“Life support is hardly non essential.”
“Actually it is. There is enough good air on the ship to last two hours and if the problem hasn't been fixed by then then we can use breather units.”
“All right then but a little warning would be useful.”
“Understood.” Katherine gave a small sigh of relief, thinking she had managed to get through the session without a confrontation.
“It's certainly a better response than allowing an overload, then running off crying about it,” The captain said before shutting off the intercom.
Katherine sighed, realising it had been too much to hope for.

On the night of the party Sandra went upstairs to find Katherine sitting quietly in their bedroom. “Are you okay?”
Turning Katherine managed a weak smile as she said, “Truth be told, I'm not feeling in a partyish mood.”
Sandra nodded, “Me neither. I would suggest not going but I think Paul and Karen have gone to a lot of trouble.”
“Well it'll be good to have our minds taken off things.” Katherine looked at her feet a moment then said, “I'm sorry.”
“I thought we agreed it isn't your fault.”
“I didn't mean that. I meant for how I reacted, for running away from you. We need to face this together.”
Sandra walked to stand behind Katherine, putting her arms round Katherine's shoulders. “We are going to face this together and we're going to get through it.” Leaning forwards she kissed Katherine on the top of the head,

Paul and Karen had been surprised when Katherine and Sandra arrived early. They had protested when Sandra had explained wanting to help get everything ready, but soon gave in.
Sandra and Katherine were bringing some plates outside when Paul stopped them and said, “You really don't have to do this.”
“But we want to.” Sandra answered.
“So Katherine are you excited?” Karen asked, joining the other three.
“Well excited about getting to Alpha Centauri but not about being away from my girl for so long.”
“I can understand that,” Karen agreed, “I hated it when Paul had to go away to a conference.”
“You could always smuggle me on board.” Sandra suggested as she came out with some more plates.
“I don't think that would work out.”
“Fine be like that,” Sandra put her nose up in the air as she breezed past Katherine.
Katherine turned to Paul and Karen, “Thanks for taking care of Sandra while I'm gone.”
“Hey! I don't need taking care of.” Sandra protested.
Ignoring this Katherine went on in a stage whisper, “Make sure she always has clean clothes, she has a tendency to forget.”
“That's it! I'm so getting a divorce while you're gone.”
As she went back inside Katherine laughed, “Promises, promises.”

The party was just getting going when Donald approached Katherine. “Hey Katherinbe, I'm afraid I'm going to have to get going.”
“But you've only just arrived,” Katherine protested.
“Yeah, I've got a lot of work to do tomorrow. I really only came to wish you good luck, and a safe voyage.”
Nodding Katherine said, “Thanks for coming. Before you go can I ask you something?”
“Sure.”
“Have I done something to upset Megan?”
Donald looked nervous a moment before saying, “Has she said something?”
“No, but she's been acting kind of funny round me.” Looking round she added, “I was going to ask her today but she doesn't seem to have turned up.”
“Well Megan said she was feeling kind of sick,” Donald said, not looking as though he believed this. “you see she's not been happy since the news about you going to Alpha Centauri.” Donald started squirming, obviously not happy to be discussing this.
Katherine nodded, not entirely surprised. “Well thanks again for coming,”
***
Karen was out in the kitchen getting the last bits of food ready, with Sandra helping her. “You know you don't need to help,” Karen said, “This party is as much for you as it is for Katherine.”
“I think I just need to keep busy at the moment. Otherwise I start thinking about next week and the chance that when they start the engines up the ship will blow up.”
Reaching out to touch Sandra's arm Karen said, “It'll be okay.” Stepping back Karen decided to change the subject, “Have I told you my news?”
“Only a couple of dozen times.” Smiling Sandra went on, “But I can understand you being excited.” Blushing slightly and lifting her hand to deal with a rogue strand of hair she added, “I had a crush on Amber when I was younger.”
Raising an eyebrow Karen said, “Really?”
“Yeah. That was when I first started to figure out that I was bisexual.” They both stopped as Katherine came in writing on her data unit. “You know it's bad form to text people at a party,” Sandra said.
“Oh I just want to send this one message then I'm going to turn it off.”
Sandra took the device off of Katherine and read, “Some friendly advice. Get over yourself.” Handing it back she said, “Nice. Who's it to?”
“Megan. Well she said before that I was too nice. So this will either make her happy or make her hate me more. Either way, I'm rapidly ceasing to care.”
Karen and Sandra looked at each other but neither said anything about this.
Katherine looked around and said, “Why are we all standing in the kitchen?”
“I need you to take some plates through,” Karen answered, picking the plates up.
Before Katherine could respond Anne came in saying, “I wonder if I could have a glass of water?”
“I guess so.” Karen answered before going to get it.
“You know you don't look too good.” Katherine said.
“I've been out of breath all evening for some reason.” Anne managed a weak smile, “I guess I'm getting out of shape.”
“She's right you look awful.” Sandra said as she moved a stool out from under the counter, “You should sit down.”
Anne nodded as she sat down. She looked puzzled a moment then said, ”My arm keeps aching.” Turning to Karen she said, “I think that I might have to go home early.”
“Well that would be a....” Karen stopped, the glass slipping from her hand, as she saw Anne tumble from her chair, a look of pain on her face.
“Oh god.” Anne moaned as she tried to get up.
“Where does it hurt?” Sandra asked as she rushed over and knelt beside Anne.
“My... chest,” Anne gasped.
“Just lie still, don't try to get up.” Sandra suggested. She began loosening Anne's clothes while saying, “Just take slow deep breaths.” Looking up she started, “We need to get...” She stopped as she saw that Katherine already had her phone out.
“Hello, we need an ambulance at two oh five Samson Terrace. Anne, she's having a heart attack.”
