Chapter 10 – A Spy Amongst Us

“This week Luna is celebrating it's hundredth anniversary as an independent nation state. All week there will be events celebrating this fact. In particular they will be focusing on Luna's position as the strongest economy out of the three major states. Detractors say that since it's independence it has become nothing more than a tax refuge for the very wealthy but the Luna government said that this sort of nay saying couldn't detract from the great achievements of the last hundred years.”

***

A week after her anniversary Katherine headed into work as normal. As she walked from the station to the Agency building she got out her data pad and started reading some of the reports. She was so caught in her reading that she almost walked into the doors. Stopping suddenly Katherine looked round to see if anyone had seen her. She then turned back to the doors. “Why didn't you open?” Finally she decided that the cameras probably hadn't got a proper look at her so she walked away a little way and walked back more slowly. Again the doors remained closed. Getting a bit annoyed she hit the intercom button.

“Reception. How can I help?” A tired voice answered.

“Uh, hi. I'm trying to get in but the doors won't open,” Katherine explained.

“This entrance is for employees only. Please use the visitors entrance.”

Katherine quickly counted to ten, “I am an employee. Katherine Goodings.”

“What is your employee number?”

Katherine began digging through her pockets looking for her ID. “One moment.” Finally finding it she read out the number.

There was a short pause. “I'm sorry but we have no employee registered with that number.” The intercom went dead leaving Katherine seething with frustration. She thought about going round to the visitor entrance and sorting it out there, but a stubborn part of her refused to give up here.

She hit the intercom button again, “Hi, it's me again.”

“This entrance is just for employees. Please use the visitor entrance.”

“I told you already I am an employee. I've been working here for five years now.”

“And I told you there is no employee registered with the number you gave,” The voice said, starting to sound annoyed.

Katherine was starting to grow frustrated with this. She shouted, “Let me in!”

“If you don't vacate the premises we'll be forced to call security.” The intercom went off again. Deciding to give up Katherine started round to visitor entrance. She was halfway there when she had an idea.

Taking her phone out she dialled Paul. As he answered he asked “Hey Katherine, what's up?”

“They won't let me in.”

“What? Where?” Paul asked, trying to figure out what she was talking about.

“The Agency building. I can't get in, the doors aren't working.”

“Use the intercom.”

“I did! They keep saying I'm not an employee.”

“Okay, okay. Calm down. Look you stay put and I'll try to sort this out.”

“Okay, thanks.” Turning off her phone she went to sit down on one of the benches outside the visitors entrance.

***

As soon as he had finished the call Paul activated the search engine on his computer and entered Katherine Goodings. It came back with two results but neither were for the right person. Starting to get a bad feeling about this Paul went to see Anne.

After he had explained what had happened she did a similar search to the one he had. After a few minutes she said, “As far as I can see Katherine is no longer listed as being an employee of the Agency. She has been completely removed.”

“How could that happen?”

“I don't know. Even if she had been sacked her records should still be there. Where is she?”

“She's waiting outside.”

“Right.” Anne activated her computers phone and dialled Katherine.

“Hi Anne. Do you know what's going on?”

“Yes, Paul told me. Listen this might take a while to sort out. Why don't you go home, take the day off. We'll try to have everything worked out by tomorrow.”

“Okay then, thanks.”

As Anne ended the call Paul said, “So what are we going to do?”

“We need to go to a higher power.”

***

Anne and Paul went to see Graham and started to explain what was happening.

“Ah yes, Ms Goodings. She's been suspended.”

“For what reason and why are her records missing?”

“For security reasons and because security asked us to.”

“What security reasons and why wasn't I told?”

“There are reasons to believe that she is a security risk and you weren't told because it is need to know.”

“Of course I don't need to know when part of my team is being barred access to the building. Anyway Katherine is as much a security risk as I am.” Anne said, starting to grow annoyed at his attitude.

“With your past, I'd be careful about making statements like that.”

Biting back an angry comment Anne said to Paul, “Come on, we're wasting our time here.”

***

As Katherine got home she immediately knew that something was up. Everything was tidy enough but she could tell it had been moved. Seeing the look on Sandra's face confirmed it. “Honey, what's wrong?”

“Security were here. I'm sorry but they had a search warrant.”

“What did they do?”

“They took your computers and all your files to do with the project. Why are they doing this now?”

“I wish I knew.” Katherine said, hoping that this was a nightmare, or that Anne would be able to sort things out.

***

Katherine immediately set about going over everything to see what had been taken. As she did so she grew more and more worried. She had a few files which shouldn't have been taken out of the space agency, but which she needed to be able to do her work. She hadn't taken anything that was really confidential but it occurred to her that if she was being investigated, the fact that she had those files would look bad. She looked up from her searching as Sandra came in.

“I just had a thought,” Sandra said, “What about talking to Abigail?”

“Of course. If anyone can tell me what's going on, it's her.” Katherine went to the com unit and made a call. After a few moments a woman appeared. She looked a lot like Katherine, except her hair was longer, reaching down to her shoulders, and her features were slightly narrower. Smiling she said, “Kathy, long time no speak.”

Katherine frowned slightly at being called Kathy, but didn't say anything. Abigail was the only person who could get away with it. “Abby.” This earned a similar frown from Abigail. “Actually I'm calling because I need your help.”

“Okay sis, what's up?”

Katherine recounted what had happened to her.

Abigail nodded, “Yeah, you're being investigated by a branch of the security services.”

“Why? What have I done?”

Abigail looked anxious a moment, “I'm sorry I can't tell you any more.”

“But...”

“Listen, things are really tense at the security services at the moment. There seems to be some sort of power play going on. There's a new group who think the services should be more... well efficient is the word they use, but some of the stuff they want to bring in, well it's really scary.”

“It sounds nasty.”

“Well there's just a load of politics going on. I really would like to help you but... I'm being investigated as well.”

“Oh, I'm sorry.”

“It should be okay. I mean there isn't anything for them to find but it'll make it hard for me to help you,” Abigail paused, “I'll see what I can do.”

“Thanks.”

“Well it probably won't be much. Well I better get going.”

“Bye, I hope you get things sorted soon.”

Abigail nodded, then switched off the link.

“So both you and your sister are being investigated,” Sandra said.

“Seems that way,” Katherine agreed.

“Quite a coincidence.”

“Yeah, it is.”

***

The next day security came and picked Katherine up to take her to some questioning. As she sat down in the interrogation room a man there said, “Hello I am Agent Smith and am in charge of the investigation of a breach in security at the Mars Space Agency. You are Katherine Goodings, a former employee at the Agency.”

“What do you mean former? The Agency has a lengthy procedure for firing employees and I haven't been put through it.”

“Under normal circumstances of course but when dealing with matters of national security, Ms Goodings, things can be sped up.”

“National security, what are you talking about?”

“There were several files at your home pertaining to the Alpha Centauri project.”

“So, I was working on it at home, that's hardly a crime.”

“Some of those files were marked as not to be removed from the Agency.”

“Yeah well I needed them for my work and that hardly warrants all of this.”

“We have reason to believe that information about the project is being leaked to Earth.”

“And what? You think it's me?”

“Ms Goodings, you are the most likely suspect.”

“This is rubbish. I'm not a spy.”

“That remains to be seen. Now have you had any contact with Earth recently?”

“No.”

Agent Smith gave Katherine a sheet of paper and said, “These are the call logs for the last few months. Some of the calls are highlighted. How do you explain them?”

“Firstly they are not to Earth they're to Luna. We were checking prices for the hotels there. We were thinking about going there for our honey moon.”

“Why check prices? We don't have money here.”

“Yes but we thought there was a limit to how much we could charge to the state for out honeymoon.”

“How considerate of you. So Ms Goodings you wanted to travel to Earth.”

“No we wanted to travel to Luna. Which isn't a crime. Neither is going to or calling Earth.”

Agent Smith took the paper back and said, “Do you happen to have any accounts on Luna?”

Katherine laughed and said, “Of course not.” Agent Smith handed her another sheet of paper. Katherine took a look at it then said, “This is bullshit.”

“So you dispute this evidence?”

“Yes, I dispute this evidence. I dispute this whole inquiry. I know what it's about you know.”

“And what is that?”

“I know my sister is being investigated as well. It's about us being bioengineered. This is the only reason we're suspects.” Katherine stood up and threw the reports at Agent Smith, “I've had enough of this.” She started towards the door.

Agent Smith stood up and said, “Katherine Goodings I'm placing you under arrest for espionage.”

“Damn.”

***

As soon as he got the news Paul went straight round to see Anne. The first thing he said as soon as he was through the door was, “You've heard that Katherine's been arrested.”

“Yes, I was actually informed about it this time.”

“So what are you going to do about it?”

“There's not a lot that I can do.”

“So you're just going to abandon her.”

“That's a pretty radical interpretation of what I said.”

“This is just like you. Being linked to a suspected spy isn't going to help your career so you're not going to do anything.”

“Goddamn it.” Anne hit the table, surprising Paul. “How long have you known Katherine?”

“A few months.”

“Right. I've been friends with her for more than two years now and the fact that she's having to go through this is tearing me up. So I really don't need you coming in here acting as if it's my fault.”

“Sorry. I know that this isn't your fault.”

“Well I guess we're both upset by what has happened. Look I'll do whatever I can to help Katherine I just don't know what that is yet.”

***

Anyone looking in Katherine's cell would have thought that she was asleep. She was sat with her back resting against the wall, her head tilted forwards and her eyes closed. She was actually thinking about the project. There had been a problem with the sensor arrays and before the arrest she had been close to finding a solution. She was now mentally going over the schematics, trying to work out what to do.

Katherine looked up as she heard the door opening. As a guard came in she jumped to her feet and said, “So am I going to be released?”

“I'm afraid not. You might be here a while, so we've been instructed to move a different building, where the facilities are better. You might actually be able to get some sleep.”

“Staying here bad, sleep good.”

The guard held out form, “We need you to sign this.”

“And if I don't?”

“We can't move you.”

“Fine,” Katherine held out her hand. She was about to sign it but stopped. Looking at the guard she said, “This isn't a confession is it?” The guard didn't respond to this. After reading over the paper and finding it just gave permission to be moved to a different building Katherine signed it. Handing it over she said, “Well then let's go.” The guard put some cuffs on her and led her out.

***

Katherine was taken to a shuttle which took her to the prison centre. She was met by a pair of guards who led her to a waiting room. The walls were an antiseptic white colour and the room was bare save for a table and a few chairs. “Wait here, your lawyer wants to talk to you.”

“My lawyer?” Katherine asked. Seeing the guards had gone she sat down saying to herself, “I've never needed a lawyer before.”

***

After Paul had left Anne spent her time alternating between working on the paperwork for the project and trying to find a way to help Katherine. By the end of the day, she wasn't sure which was the more frustrating. She just knew that she hadn't made much progress with either. Glancing over at the clock she decided to start again on both the next day. Sitting back in her chair Anne glanced at the pile of paperwork that remained. It suddenly didn't seem important to her. Sitting forwards Anne wrote a note for one of the administrators to handle it and stuck it to the pile. She then activated her her com system and made a call to Abigail.. As the answer service came on she said, “Abigail, it's Anne. I need to talk to you about Katherine. Call me as soon as possible.”
***

Paul was starting to prepare dinner for himself and his wife when the doorbell rang. “I'll get it,” Karen said. Going and opening the door she greeted the person there, “Sandra.”

“Hi,” Sandra said, “Can I come in?”

“Sure,” Karen said, leading her into he living room. “So how are you holding...” Karen started to ask as she turned towards Karen. She stopped, seeing that Karen was struggling to keep from breaking down. Quickly moving over to Karen Sandra wrapped her arms round her, whispering “It'll be okay, it'll be okay.”

After a couple of minutes Sandra broke away saying, “I'm sorry. I didn't come here to cry all over you.”

“Don't be, I understand.”

Paul came in saying, “Who was...” He stopped when he saw Sandra and said, “Ah, Sandra have you been to see Katherine?”

Sandra shook her head, “She's been transferred to another building. There's been a clerical error and they don't know where she's been moved to.”

“Well that's just not acceptable,” Karen fumed, “What are they doing about it?”

“They say they're doing everything they can but...” Sandra just shrugged, indicating she didn't think it was enough.

“We were about to have dinner,” Paul said.

“I'm sorry, I didn't mean to intrude.”

“You're not,” Karen interjected, “What my husband meant was, you should join us.”

“Yeah,” Paul said, “That's what I meant.”

“Thanks, I should just go and clean up.”

“Poor girl,” Karen whispered, almost to herself when Sandra had gone.

“Which one?” Paul asked.

“Both.”

***

It wasn't till a couple of days later that Abigail called Anne back. "Sorry," She said, "I've been tied up here, only just got your message. So what can I do for you?"

"You're aware of what's happened to Katherine, I'm sure."

"I knew she was being investigated, how's that going?"

For a moment Anne couldn't say anything, surprised that Abigail didn't know that her sister had been arrested. "She was arrested two days ago."

"Son of a bitch," Abigail swore, "I'm sorry, I had no idea that had happened. What evidence do they have?"

"They're keeping pretty quiet about that."

"What does Katherine say?"

"That's the thing. She was transferred shortly after being arrested and seems to have fallen through the beuracratic gaps."

Abigail considered this a moment, "Suspicious."

"That's what I was thinking."

"Okay, well I'll look into finding her and making sure she gets a decent lawyer, but there really has been a leak from the agency hasn't there?"

"Surely you don't think it's her?"

"Of course not. It's just the only way to get her out might well be to find the real culprit." Abigail sat back a moment, considering something, "You know I've read your record."

"That must have been interesting reading," Anne said in a wry tone.

"I admit I've never seen the word redacted so often in a single file. However what little wasn't classified did suggest you're pretty good at analyticiall thinking, working out clues and things. So maybe this is right up your alley."

"I'll consider it."

"And I'll work on finding my missing sister."

***

After talking to Abigail Anne brought up her schedule and instructed the computer to cancel all of her appointments for the day. After a while it told her that she had a meeting that morning which had been flagged as high priority. Bringing up the details she saw that it was with Mr Malovich. “I thought that Graham was dealing with him,” She muttered.

***

Walking into the meeting room Anne was surprised to see Ada waiting for her rather than Mr Malovich. "I was expecting Mr Malovich," She said.

"He had to return to Luna for some business. He has left me to take care of everything."

"Very well then, let's get started."

Anne brought up some schematics and started going over the plans for the ship. After she'd been speaking a while Ada interrupted saying, “Is something wrong?” As Anne looked up at her she went on, “You seem worried about something.”

“It's... not important, just a personal matter.”

Ada nodded then said, "One thing that concerns me is how are you going to communicate with the ship?"

"We'll be able to use the standard tachyon arrays once it has arrived."

"When it's arrived, not when it's in transit."

"We've been working on a means to communicate with the ship while travelling, but haven't been able to get it working."

"So if something goes wrong on route they'll be on their own."

"Which is why we're making sure to send an experienced team who can deal with any problems."

Ada nodded and turned back to the display.

When Anne had finished Ada said, "Well you seem to have it pretty well worked out, the question is what do you need from Malovich industries?"

***

Once Anne had finished her meeting with Ada she returned to her office. After instructing her computer that she didn't want to be disturbed she started working a way to help Katherine. The only thing that she could come up with was to find the real spy in order to get Katherine off the hook, though she knew that that would hardly be easy. Anne accessed the personnel files and began looking at people who had access to critical information. She stopped after looking at a couple of files as it occurred to her that it might be someone outside the agency who had contacts within it. On a hunch she looked at Tony's file. There were a number of warnings and criticisms of his attitude. However it had gotten a lot worse recently. Checking the dates she saw his behaviour had deteriorated around the time he was chosen to be the main test pilot for the project. It was also around the time that Paul's design was chosen for the project. “So did something happen then? Or was he being influenced somehow?”

Remembering something that Simon had said to her she turned on her comunicator and called him.

“Hi Anne, what can I do for you?”

“Remember when we were working on the presentations? You said you had a new girlfriend.”

“Yeah, she left me soon after that.”

“What was her name?”

“Crystal. I seem to recall she went off with the test pilot. I guess I wasn't exciting enough for her. So why bring this up now?”

“We still on for Friday?”

“Of course.”

“I'll tell you then.”

Simon sighed, “I don't seem to have much luck with the women.” He brightened a little, “You know I always thought that we'd be good together.”

Anne shook her head, “Sorry, you're not my type.”

“To be frank, I'm starting to think you don't have a type.”

“Well, to be Anne, I think you might be right. Well I'll see you Friday.”

“Sure, I got a new deck yesterday.”

“hopefully ones which are opaque to infrared light.”

“Uh,” Simon blushed, “I'm telling you that was an honest mistake.”

“Of course it was. Well bye.” Turning off the com unit, Anne sat back and thought about what Simon had told her.

***

Anne spent the next couple of hours double checking her theory, Once she was sure of the facts she called Paul into her office.

“What's up?” He asked.

“I know a way to help Katherine.” Anne hesitated a moment, wondering if she should really involve Paul in her plan. “However it's illegal.”

“What, we're going to break her out of prison?” Paul didn't really see that as being a long term solution.

“No but we will be arrested if we're caught. So are you in?”

“Sure.”

***

As they walked down a corridor of an apartment complex Paul asked, “Who are we going to see?”

“Crystal.”

“Whatever for?” Paul asked, after a moments thought he said, “Unless you think that she's the spy.”

“Exactly. I checked Tony's record and his behaviour took a turn for the worse about the same time as he started dating Crystal which just happens to be the same time that he was chosen to act as the test pilot. Also there's her predilection for people who are working for Agency and connected to the project. Not only Tony and Michael but also Simon, when his design was the favourite.” Stopping at a door Anne hit the door buzzer.

“What are you going to say? Have you been selling confidential information to Earth?”

“I'm hoping that she isn't in.” Anne pressed the buzzer again. After a few seconds she got some tools out of her bag.

Paul watched as she opened the panel and began fiddling with it. “Come on. You don't think that you're going to...” Paul stopped as the doors opened. “Where did you learn to do that?”

“Misspent youth.” Was all Anne said as she entered the room.

They began searching through the room. After a few minutes Anne said, “Aha.”

Paul rushed over to see her moving a picture to show a safe behind. “Can you open it?” He asked,

“I should be able to. The tricky part is it's most likely to be rigged to destroy the contents should anyone tamper with it.” She began examining the safe, “This may take a while.”

Paul went and sat down as he waited. He kept glancing over at the door, certain that at any moment Crystal would return and catch them there. Paul jumped as he heard something opening. It took a moment to figure out it was the safe. Getting up he asked, “What have you got?”

“Looks to be a lot of classified information from the agency. Here.” Anne passed some of the files from the safe to Paul. “I think this will get Katherine off the hook. I mean she has no reason to have this stuff.”

“But how do we explain being in here?”

“Let me handle...” Anne stopped and moved to one side of the room as the doors opened.

***

Crystal paused outside her apartment, there seemed to be something wrong with the door control. Deciding that she'd check it later she opened the door. For a moment she couldn't believe what she was seeing. What was an engineer from the agency doing in her apartment. “What are you doing in here?”

“Just looking about. I'm thinking about getting an apartment in this area and wanted to see one first.”

“I'm calling security.” Crystal started towards the com unit, keeping Paul in her sight. As she did she tried to figure out how he'd gotten in.

“Go ahead, I'm sure they'd be interested in this stuff.” Paul lifted the files he had been holding.

Crystal looked at the files in his hand then. For a moment she wondered how he had managed to break into her her safe without setting off the alarm that should have destroyed the contents. Deciding that that was rather moot now she walked up to him saying, “Then again why trouble them over such a small thing.” Crystal smiled slightly.

“Uh well...” Paul stammered.

Crystal raised her hand to his chest, “I mean it's not as if I mind you being here.” with her other hand she reached behind her back and began to slowly pull out a long needle.

“You're right. Lets leave security out of this,” Paul grinned at Crystal as he said this.

“Now why don't you...” Crystal stopped as she felt a gun being put against her head. She let go of the needle and raised both her hands.

“Why don't you try that succubus crap on me?” The person holding the gun asked.

Without moving her head, Crystal moved her eyes to see who it was. “Anne.”

“And you would be Marta Hari. I know what you're doing to him.”

“You probably think you're immune.”

“I know I am.”

“Yes Tony did mention that about you.” Crystal smiled as Anne started to blush. Realising that her abilities weren't affecting Anne, Crystal decided to try a different tact, “I could just ask Paul here to take the gun off of you and he would.”

Anne pressed the gun harder against Crystal's head, “You'd be dead before you finished the sentence.”

It was clear to Crystal that if she was going to get out of this then she would have to buy herself some time. She released her hold on Paul saying, “Fine, have it your way.”

Paul blinked a couple of times, looking dazed. “What just happened?”

“You were just being a man.”

Paul focused on what Anne was holding, “You brought a gun?”

“My mother always told me to be prepared.”

“But a gun? Is it even legal?”

“Don't worry I have a valid license. Well are you going to call security?”

“Oh yeah.”

With her free hand Anne reached behind Crystal's back and pulled out the needle she had there. She looked at it a moment then said, “Interesting, poisoned I presume.”

Crystal smiled, “If you give it to me I'll show you.”

Instead of answering Anne turned slightly and threw the needle onto a desk. “If you've got any other weapons like that then don't even think about going for one of them.” Anne went to sit down, still keeping her gun aimed at Crystal. “You know, I used to know someone like you.”

“Like me? You mean someone who's perfect.”

“I mean a succubus. She had silver hair and really large eyes, she looked like something out of those old Manga films.” Anne looked into Crystal's eyes and said, “Believe me when I say that you don't want to know what happened to her.”

***

Paul wasn't certain how, but somehow Anne was able to explain to security what they had been doing in Crystal's apartment. Crystal was taken into custody and the evidence collected up. The security services promised to evaluate the new evidence. A couple of days later Anne called Paul into her office to tell him that Katherine had been located and that she was being released. Before long they were both sat in the security office waiting for Katherine to be released. Paul hadn't had much chance to talk to Anne, let alone discuss what had happened. Deciding he needed to discuss it with someone he said, “I still can't really believe what happened.”

“What, that we got Katherine off? I have to admit I wasn't expecting it to be quite so easy.”

“Easy? Not quite how I'd put it. Anyway, what I meant was the fact that I wanted to sleep with a woman who wasn't my wife.”

“Oh, that. Well it wasn't your fault.”

“How could it not be?”

“Because she's a succubus.”

Paul remembered Anne having used that word before but still didn't understand, “I don't know what one of those is.”

“It means she's had cybernetic implants to help her control people, using pheromones and stuff like that.”

“You weren't affected. But I guess that you're immune because you're a woman.”

“No. I'm immune because I've been conditioned to be immune.”

“Oh.” It occurred to Paul that there was a lot that he didn't know about Anne. “So will we have to testify?”

“I doubt if this will go to trial.” Seeing the look of disbelief on Paul's face she went on, “I mean we might have been able to get the security forces to accept us being there, but any decent lawyer will get the evidence thrown out.”

“So then what was the point?”

“What was the point? That was.” Anne indicated the other side of the room.

“I am not a spy.” Katherine said as a guard removed her manacles. She started to approach them, but stumbled slightly. Righting herself Katherine walked over to them. “So I take it I have the two of you to thank for my current state of freedom.”

“We didn't do much,” Anne insisted.

“Well I'm grateful to both of you. I understand the actual spy was little miss skankbot.”

“If by that you mean Crystal then yes it was,” Paul said, “How have you been holding up, I can imagine it was very nice.”

“You know it wasn't so bad. I mean the cell was pretty clean, and I got room service. It was quite nice to get a break away from work.”

“I'm glad you're well rested,” Anne said, “Since you'll need to get right back to work. You've got a lot of wasted days to catch up for.”

“Right away.”

Hey Justin,

Woot! I really enjoyed this chapter. I suspected Crystal was a bit of a "problem." What I liked was how you handled her. Succubus, huh...that I wasn't expecting; very creative character twist.

Also a nice change from the old standard was having Katherine be denied access to the Agency building before her arrest. This was a great set up for Anne and Paul to discover that all her files had been removed from the system (and that in itself is a little more than alarming -- talk about power.)

The undercurrents in this story are really engaging. Katharine's arrest and her proclamation of the real intent and motives behind her situation is, well not exactly *fun,* certainly food for thought. Seems humanity is ever and always trapped in picking on the "fringe" groups in society. Really shows a lot about the social and political paradigms of the universe -- rampant paranoia, tinged with a little xenophobia, perhaps. Something tells me, the term 'suspension of civil liberties' is potentially only a few keystrokes away in this society.

Great cloak and dagger in this scene. I like it! Yes, breaking into Crystal's apartment and the resolution did feel a little *easy.* On the other hand, you've shown us a new side to Anne's character. Which makes me think had anyone else tried it, it wouldn't have gone quite so smoothly.

Seems we've a lot to learn about Anne too. Nicely done.

I believe we can trust the PTB to not bring the matter to trial. . As you pointed out, the information was obtained in the commission of a crime. But I'm wondering what the security forces are going to do with Crystal. They have the proof they need to clear Katharine, but I'm a little curious as to what was contained in the files Crystal had stolen

Looking forward to more, when you've the chance.

Cheers!!

Patches: I'm glad you enjoyed this part

This was a great set up for Anne and Paul to discover that all her files had been removed from the system (and that in itself is a little more than alarming -- talk about power.)

You're right that sort of thing is worrying. They only removed Katherine from the agencies records, but it has to be asked could they have removed her from records everywhere, turning her into an unperson, like in the series Nowhere man?

Seems humanity is ever and always trapped in picking on the "fringe" groups in society.

I've always said that one of the reasons for creating Bioengineered people was that we were running out of people to discriminate against.

Seems we've a lot to learn about Anne too. Nicely done.

There's definitely more to Anne than meets the eye.

But I'm wondering what the security forces are going to do with Crystal.

Well in cases like this, the SOP is to trade them for someone being held by Earth.

And now for the next part

Chapter 11 – Of Mice And Men

“Today was an historic occasion for Earth. The Earth ship Enterprise, with a crew of ten, left dock and set off on it's maiden voyage to Alpha Centauri. Earth officials were jubilant at this success, with one proclaiming that the race for Alpha Centauri was now over. Here is footage of the launch.”

***

Anne squeezed her sister's hand whilst mumbling something. She thought it might have been, “Don't die Sybil, please don't die.”

Sybil's arm convulsed and their was a loud crack as the bone broke, causing her to cry out in pain.

“Do something!” Anne screamed at one of the doctors.

“We're trying, we don't know what's wrong with her yet.” He gave Sybil another shot of pain killers.

Looking at her sister, Anne knew they weren't helping.

Anne woke up with a slight gasp. She lay still a moment thinking about the dream. It had been a while since she'd had that dream about her sister. Anne knew right away it had been brought about by her encounter with Crystal. Anne spent a few moments indulging in the memories of what had happened, then she took them all and locked them away in a box. Getting up Anne went to get ready for work.

**

Paul sat back in his old easy chair, in his games room, whilst trying to make sense of what had happened over the last few days. First Katherine had been suspended and arrested and then they had cleared her by breaking into someone's apartment. All the while with Anne acting more like a high tech secret agent than the manager of an engineering department. Paul had first met Anne going on fifteen years ago when she had started working at the Agency as an intern. He had been friends with her from then right up until he left. It occurred to Paul that aside from the fact that she had come from Earth, he didn't know anything about Anne from before then. She had said she didn't like to dwell on it and Paul had always respected that. He guessed that the only person who might know would be Karen. However given the way she felt about Anne now, he doubted if he'd be able to discuss it with her.

Realising that he wasn't going to come up with any answers Paul got up and went back inside.

***
Anchorage prison was a self contained unit, about fifty kilometres away from the Taraopia colony. The only way to get to or from it being via airborne shuttles. Upon arrival all detainees were required to go through an extensive medical check.

“Step this way please,” A guard said to Crystal.

Crystal nodded then stepped behind a scanner.

“Okay beginning the sweep,” A technician said, “It looks like she's bioengineered.” He went on, looking at the sensors. After a moment he added, “Oh boy.”

“What's up?” The guard asked.

“She's had quite a lot of additions. Bone structure's been modified, she's got muscle enhancers. Looks like lung capacity has been increased. Of course she's got the extra pheromone glands.”

“So you're saying she's one souped up lady.”

“Yeah.” He glanced at some of the readings and said, “Wait a moment.”

“What's up?”

“It looked like there might be something in her mouth. I'm going to scan it again.” Frowning he redid that part of the scan, “No, nothing there. Must have just been a glitch. Well that's it, you can take her away,”

***

Getting up from bed Katherine raised her hands above her head and stretched, noticing a stab of pain in her side as she did so. Going over to the mirror she lifted her top up and looked at her side, but couldn't see anything wrong. Probing her side with her fingers she noticed some pain when she pressed it. Shrugging Katherine muttered. “I must have knocked it.”

***

Following the news that the Earth ship had already launched for Alpha Centauri the atmosphere had grown very tense within the Agency. Many people were starting to worry that the project might be cancelled. The directors had quickly scheduled a conference to try to put these fears to rest.

Paul was making his way to the conference hall when Michael caught up with him, Without greeting him Michael asked, “So how's Katherine?”

“I'd say she seems to be okay.”

“Yeah, but being held in prison for a few nights can't have been fun,” Michael pressed.

“No. She didn't really say much when she got out. But what about you, how are you feeling?”

“Embarrassed mainly. I think that I might quit the project.”

“What happened isn't your fault.”

“Isn't it?”

“From what I understand of it all, Crystal was pretty good at controlling people.” Paul decided not to mention that he'd experienced this first hand.

“Maybe but I should have known better. If it hadn't been for Anne this could have been a lot worse.”

Paul nodded, “Yeah she seemed to be more on the ball than the security forces agent.”

“So how is Katherine?” Michael repeated.

“Why don't you ask her?” Paul suggested, wondering why Michael was asking him about Katharine's condition.

“I'm not sure that she'd want to talk to me.”

“I'm certain that Katherine doesn't blame you for what happened to her. I mean the problem there was the investigators.”

“Maybe.” He stopped as they went into the conference room, “Actually talking to her would be a good idea. Do you know where she is?” He looked round the conference hall, “She doesn't seem to be here.”

“Oh, yeah that's right. She's taken a couple of days off. Anne said something about seeing family.” They found a couple of seats and sat down, “Which surprised me, because I didn't think she had any.”

“Well I've heard that people from the same batch can sometimes think of each other as being siblings. Especially if they come from a similar genetic stock. Katherine never really mentioned any family when I knew her. I mean I know she's got a sister in the security forces, but I don't know about any other family.”

***

The conference room was as packed as during the first conference for the project, but the atmosphere was decidedly less excited.

Anne went up on the stage, “Okay so I guess you've all heard the news, Earth has launched a ship for Alpha Centauri. So I guess that's it, we failed. We might as well all go home.” Anne turned and started to walk to the edge of the stage. There was some nervous laughter from round the stage. Anne span round and said, “Except there's one problem.” She pointed a laser pointer at someone in the crowd and said, “What was the point of this project?”

“Uh,” The person she had pointed at seemed uncertain a moment, “to reach Alpha Centauri?”

“That's right. To REACH Alpha Centauri. So maybe they've set out first, and kudos to them for that, but they haven't gotten there yet.”

There was some muttering from the audience, who clearly didn't except this.

Ignoring this Anne went on, “Now you've all seen the specs for the ship, seen what it can do. It isn't going to be a little faster than their ship. It's not going to be a lot faster than their ship. It's going to be a bloody great deal faster. Yeah, so they've got a head start on us. So what? We can still get to Alpha Centauri before them.” Anne paused then went on, “If you think otherwise then you might as well leave now, because there's no room for losers on this project.” With that Anne turned and this time she did walk off the stage.

***

“Welcome to Sirius Planar.” Katherine sat staring at the sign, not seeming to be able to move from the spot. After what seemed like an age she got up but after standing still for a moment but then sat down again. Katherine chewed her lip as she wondered why she was finding it so hard. Finally she stood up and left the transport, As she walked to the reception there was a friendly looking nurse standing behind the counter, making some notes.

Sensing someone approaching she looked up. She smiled as she recognised the visitor, “Katherine, it's been a while.”

“Yeah, well...”

“No need to explain. I know you've been busy lately, I mean I do watch the news,” She smiled again, “Your sisters will be happy to see you.”

“Are they still in the same room?”

“Yes.”

Katherine started down the corridor but was stopped by the nurse calling, “Oh Katherine.”

Katherine walked back, “Yes?”

“You'll need a visitors pass.” She held a pass out.

Katherine took it off her and pinned it to her jacket before setting off again. Katherine walked down the brightly pained corridors listening to her feet echo off the floor. Reaching a door she hit the door open button and went in, It was a large room, with large windows looking out onto a garden. There were seven women round the room.

A medium sized woman with dark curly hair was playing chess with a slightly taller woman with dark brown hair.

A short distance away a tall woman was painting them both. She stared at the canvas with a serious expression on her face, occasionally looking round at the other two women and telling them to stop moving so much.

A woman sat off in the corner reading a book. She was studiously ignoring everyone else in the room,

A woman was sitting on a mat meditating.

A woman was writing in a book.

A woman was working with a pad.

Hearing the doors open, they all stopped and turned to see who the visitor was.

As seven sets of eyes turned towards her, Katherine raised her hand saying, “Hi.”

***

A few days later, following Paul's advice, Michael decided to talk to Katherine. However he soon realised he didn't know what department she was currently assigned to. So instead he went to see Paul, “Do you know where Katherine is?”

“I think that she was helping with the shielding division.”

“Oh right thanks.” Michael paused a moment then said, “It certainly is useful having her on the project. I can just send her off to any of the teams and she quickly picks up what they're doing.”

“Yeah. Her designers did a good job with her.”

Michael frowned a little at this comment, remembering something Anne had told him, “I heard that you have something against bioengineered people.”

“I'm learning to get over it.”

“Good. Though to be honest I had my doubts about them before I knew Katherine. Then again we're all bioengineered to a degree.”

“How do you figure that out?”

“Well the first settlers on Mars were genetically modified to help them cope with the different conditions. That was the original Darwin project. We're all descended from them.”

“I guess that I had never really thought about that.”

***

Anne was about to go to a progress meeting when she was stopped by an engineer who said, “Sorry to disturb you but I thought that you should see this.” He handed her a data pad, “It's the diagnostics from the ship's power systems.”

Anne read the report. Not believing it, she read it again. “This can't be right. Why is there such a large variance?”

“That's what I wanted to talk to you about. We seem to be having trouble keeping the power levels stable.”

“So what are we looking at happening?” Anne had an idea of what would happen but wanted to make certain.

“Well if the levels fluctuates too far from the ideal, either they won't be able to stay at translight speeds, or the engines will overload.”

“And either way the ship and crew are lost. Okay then, I suggest we make this a priority.”

“Yes, ma'am.”

Anne looked at the pad a moment then said, “At least we'll have something to talk about at the meeting.”

***

Katherine sat in the waiting area, wondering when her lawyer would turn up. She heard someone approaching from behind her and was about to turn towards them when she was grabbed from behind, her arms pinned to her side. "What the..." She stopped as someone else pulled a black bag over her head. "What's going on?"

"Shut up," One of the men said, "And you won't get hurt."

Katherine was pushed forward and a club was smashed into the back of her knees, causing her to fall forwards.

"Much," The man who had spoken before said while the other just laughed. Grabbing her the two men pulled Katherine to her feet and dragged her down the corridors.

"Where are you taking me?" Katherine asked.

"I said shut up."

Eventually the pulled the bag off her head and Katherine found herself in a plain room, much like the one she'd left. Then she saw it. A door leading into a small cell which was only just over a meter high and less than a meter wide and deep.

"No!" Katherine cried, "You can't put me in there."

Ignoring her they shoved her down and into the small room. Katherine tried to scramble out but she was pushed back in again, and the door was closed.

Katherine hit the door shouting, "You can't keep me in here. I'm innocent, I'm innocent!"

***

Katherine woke up to find herself in her bedroom, “Sandra?”

“I'm here,” Sandra said, putting her arm round Katherine, “It's okay, it was just a dream.”

***

After a couple of days work the design team were able to come up with a solution to the power problems. First they replaced the power conduits with better material, while at the same time constructing large capacitors which the power from the generators would be fed into. They would act as a buffer helping to smooth out the fluctuations. Once the fixes had been put in place most of the design team were brought together to come up with a way to test those fixes. The tests they had done now seemed to indicated that the power levels remained within the acceptable limits but they needed to stress the systems to make sure that nothing would break during the trip to AC. “So we just need to test the power systems?” Katherine asked. When the other people confirmed her question she went on, “What about running the decontamination sequence? That should stress the systems.”

Paul nodded, “She's right. If there are still any problems, that will show them up.”

“Okay then. We'll run the test on one section to start off with, then we'll do a test run for the whole ship.” Anne said. “That is unless any one else has any ideas.” When she was met by shaking heads Anne went on, “I want this done as soon as possible.”

It took an hour to get the systems for the test ready. “I'm starting the sweep.” One of the technicians said. Suddenly an alarm started sounding.

“We're losing atmosphere.” One of the technicians said, he looked over his readings and went on, “There's been a hull breach. Emergency doors have been lowered.”

“Was anyone in that section?” Anne asked.

“No ma'am, we cleared out that section before the test.”

“So what happened?”

“I'm not sure.”

“Bring a camera round.” As the camera zoomed in to look at the relevant part of the ship it was obvious what had happened, but not why. “An explosion.” Anne said.

“Yes, it seems to have been centred just inside the hull.”

Hey Justin,

Oh my, Oh my Oh my. So, Earth's off the ground first (so to speak). Nice way to introduce it. Now, about all those little teasers you have going...holy, like to create much in the way of suspense, or what?? LOL So, Anne has a secret past she won't talk about (and there's seeming to be more than one secret.) Katherine his a room full of sisters in some kind of controlled access medical institution (unlikely prison, or anything overtly nasty, as the attendant knew her and allowed her to pass without doing any kind of check.) Michael seemed to be acting a tad strange, but I guess that's easily put down to Crystal's manipulations.

Now, what the heck is going on with the ship?? (Good question...) Seems a mite strange to me. I'm very very curious to see how all this unfolds. Looking forward to more. Thanks Justin,

Cheers!!

I do like to have a lot of threads in a story, though it can make it hard to keep track of things

So, Anne has a secret past she won't talk about (and there's seeming to be more than one secret.)

yup, she's definitely a mystery woman.

Katherine his a room full of sisters in some kind of controlled access medical institution (unlikely prison, or anything overtly nasty, as the attendant knew her and allowed her to pass without doing any kind of check.)

They're in a low security wing of a psychiatric hospital. They're there more for their own protection than because they're a danger to anyone else.

This is the reason that Katherine was uncomfortable about the play they went to see,

Sandra grabbed the program then answered, “Uh, Sirius planar. Not many people in it.” Sandra considered it a moment, “Isn't that where the mental hospital is?”

“Yes,” Katherine answered in a subdued tone, her head bowed.

“Shit,” Sandra swore softly, berating herself for her insensitivity. Walking over to Katherine and taking her hand she said, “I'm sorry, I should have known this would be a problem.”

Katherine nodded, “Bad memories.”

Michael seemed to be acting a tad strange, but I guess that's easily put down to Crystal's manipulations.

Mainly he's just getting over the fact he was totally pwned by Crystal

The problems with the ship will be addressed in the next part

Thanks for reading, I'm glad you're liking the story

These last two installments are bulging with suspense-- Good suspense, the kind that leaves a pleasant sensation in the brain when it's resolved. Why is your brand of suspense good? It's the fact that all of your explanations make comfortable sense when viewed in retrospect. You omit some details and are selective about the ones that you include-- to great effect.

Overall, it's your dialogue that really brings a smile to my face. Clever, terse, ironic. Great job with that.

Like Patches stated, Crystal turned out to be a refreshingly interesting form of femme-fatale. To me, it’s more fun to know that a person is irresistible for reasons other than just looks or a silver tongue. Scent-glands, muscle augmentation… Really a fascinating vision you’ve got there. It makes me think of a story-idea where a Succubus (of your universe) might accidentally fall in love with a subject that they were supposed to control and then have to curb their special abilities in order to allow more realistic feelings to develop, but always doubt the authenticity of the other’s affection, etc… Or what if two Succubae fell for each other… Hmmm….

Katherine’s visiting the hospital. That’s interesting. I’ve been looking forward to understanding her history there since you made a little overture about it during the play.

Earth is in the lead… That’s brilliant. Really. No better way to ratchet-up the urgency of the Race to AC than to give the ‘opponent’ a head-start. Great idea. One of many throughout your story.

Always looking forward to reading more,

Thanks, I'm glad that the suspense works :)

Yes, the race is definitely on now.

Always looking forward to reading more,

Sorry for the delay between posts. I've been having trouble getting the next chapter to a stage where I'm happy with it. I'll get it finished and posted ASAP

The Race for Alpha Centauri

Author: Justin

Summary: Mars and Earth race to make the first manned flight to Alpha Centauri.

Chapter 12 – Saboteur

“Earth has once again called for Mars to increase it intellectual property laws to bring them in line with Earth's. In particular they have called for Mars to implement laws allowing digital content agencies to disable a users computers if they are suspected of containing illegally copied files, something that Mars has always rejected. However Earth has started to threaten trade sanctions if Mars doesn't comply with their demands.”

***
The senior staff got together the day after the explosion to discuss what had happened and what to do about it. Anne started off the meeting by saying, “It is clear from the forensic examination that there was an explosive device set in the hull of that section and that it was triggered by the test sweep.”

“Why would the decontamination sweep set the bomb off?” Paul asked.

“Most likely the bomb was designed to be triggered by the sweep.” Anne answered. As everyone turned to give her questioning looks she went on, “Think about it. We had already tested those systems. If we hadn't had those problems the sweep wouldn't have been run again till the ship was at least a light year away. Thus guaranteeing that it would have been lost along with the crew.”

“But that one bomb wasn't enough to disable the ship.” one of the technicians pointed out.

“So there must be others.” Paul said.

“So how do we find them all?” Anne asked.

There was some general discussion between the people at the meeting but no one volunteered any ideas. Finally Paul suggested, “Why not do a full sweep?”

“You mean set the bombs off?” An engineer asked, his voice incredulous.

“Better here than partway to Alpha Centauri,” Paul countered.

“I think that'll be a last resort,” Anne said, making a note on her data unit.

***

After the meeting Anne asked Paul and Katherine to come to her office. Addressing Katherine she said, “Katherine it was you who oversaw the testing of the decontamination sweep, wasn't it?”

“That's right.” Katherine answered. Then added in a bitter tone, “Great I'm going to get blamed for this too aren't I?”

Anne raised an eyebrow as she asked, “Are you forgetting who it was who got you off?”

“Uh, sorry.” Katherine said in a sheepish tone, her face blushing.

“It doesn't matter. You did the sweeps just before you were arrested though didn't you?”

“Yes.” Katherine activated her data unit and checked her log, “It was a couple of days before I was suspended.”

“Thankyou. You better get back to work.”

“Sure.” Putting her data unit away Katherine hurried from the room.

When Katherine had gone Paul leaned against Anne's desk as he asked, “So what does that prove?”

“It gives us a time frame for when the bombs were planted.”

“So they were probably planted while the inquiry was going on.” Paul considered the number of people who had had access to the ship during that time. After a moment he decided to ask the obvious question. “Couldn't it have been Crystal?”

Anne brought up a report she'd generated from the entry logs before saying, “She was never near the ship. She's been getting all her info through her lovers.”

“Well if she really can control people maybe she got one of them to do it.”

“I don't think...” Anne stopped as something occurred to her, “Wait a moment, it was always strange the way that control circuit suddenly started playing up.”

“You mean on the prototype?” Paul asked. As Anne nodded he went on, “Yeah it was definitely working before the first attempt.”

“So maybe Crystal got Tony to mess up the first attempt then sabotage the second.” Anne speculated.

“But Katherine was too smart for her and fixed the problem,” Paul continued.

“So Crystal paid her back by getting Tony to attack her.” Anne considered this a few moments, “If she sabotaged the prototype it's possible she also got someone to sabotage the main ship. Considering the time frame it would have to have been Michael.” While she had been talking Anne had been accessing her computer, “Who hasn't been on the ship.”

“Well maybe she has other patsies,” Paul guessed.

“True.” Anne nodded, “So are you up for some more investigation work?”

“Is it illegal again?”

“No. There will be no more breaking into peoples homes.” Anne assured him, adding to herself, 'At least not right away.'

“Oh well sure.”

“Good. I just need to make a call.” She dialled a number into her com system. When a man appeared she said, “Hello Richard.”

“Anne it's been a while. What four, five years now?”

“Six. How's the husband?”

“Oh he's fine. Now Anne I'm guessing you're not calling after all this time just to catch up on old times, so what's up?”

“You have a prisoner that I would like to talk to.”

“Well I guess that that can be done. I assume that you have a good reason.” He turned to one side a moment to look at a computer, “What's the prisoner's name?”

“Crystal Edwardson.”

Richard typed at the computer a moment then said, “She's one of Smith's prisoners. Why not go through him? He's at the agency at the moment isn't he?”

“Ah, I'd rather not. I have my reasons.”

“I understand. He can be a bit difficult to get along with. Well then I'll see what I can do.”

“Thanks.”

When Anne had shut off the com system Paul said, “Do you think that Crystal is going to confess?”

“I'm hoping that if she is responsible then we'll be able to persuade her too. And if she isn't I have an idea that she still might be able to help us find the bombs.”

“So how come you know security agents by their first name?”

“That is my business,” Anne said, her voice terse.

***

When Katherine got home and went into the living room she picked up the paper which had been sitting on the table and, sitting down, she started to read it.. She lowered the paper as Sandra approached her.

“Are you about ready?” Sandra asked.

“Ready?” Katherine asked back, looking confused.

“To go for our blood test.” Sandra looked uncertain a moment, “You do still want to do this, right? I mean I'd understand if you...”

“Yes, I do. It just the appointment slipped my mind.”

Sandra nodded, “I guess there has been a lot on your mind lately. Well then, if you ready.”

Katherine stood up saying, “Let's get going.”

***
It didn't take long for them to get to the hospital. Shortly after arriving they were seen by a nurse who took a blood sample from them both. After labelling the bottles and putting them with a tray of similar bottles she told them both that they'd get the results in a couple of weeks.
***
Anne got a call the next day telling her she could see Crystal. She immediately called Paul and they went together to the detention centre. When they arrived they were met by Richard who led them through it. “So what do you think she'll be able to tell you?”

“We'll know that when we speak to her.”

When they reached the cell Richard looked in and swore, “Shit.” Quickly moving to look Paul and Anne saw Crystal stretched out on her bed, her body convulsing. Richard began calling for medical and security teams.

“What are you doing? We have to help her.” Paul said.

“It might be a trick.”

“It isn't.” Anne told him, “I've seen this before. We have to get her to the infirmary now.”

Opening the doors they wheeled Crystal's bed out and rushed it to the infirmary.

“What have you got?” The doctor asked.

“She's having some sort of seizure. We don't know the cause,” Richard answered.

“Cybernetic overload,” Anne added.

“That isn't possible,” The doctor argued.

“Obviously it is,” Anne said, inwardly cursing the fact that it wasn't a more experience doctor on duty. She quickly tried to recall everything that she'd read about cybernetic overloads before saying, “Now you need to give her a muscles relaxant.” When the doctor hesitated she said, “If you don't these convulsions will break every bone in her body.” Her words were punctuated by a loud snap. “That was her left leg. You don't have much time.” The doctor finally turned to tell an orderly to give Crystal the injection. “Good now you need to give her tranquillisers and insulin.”

“What are you going to tell me she's diabetic now?”

“No but if we can reduce her blood sugar levels we can cause her brain activity to slow down, which will reduce the overload.”

“I suggest you do what she says.” Richard said, “She's had experience with this sort of thing.”

The doctor, grudgingly decided to comply.

***

When Crystal's condition had stabilized Paul and Anne left to let the doctors do their job. “Wow that was pretty horrible.” Paul said.

“You could say that,” Anne answered, her voice muted.

“So you've seen that before?”

Anne nodded, “My sister.”

“Your... That was the girl you said about,” Paul guessed, “The one with silver hair.”

Anne indicated for them to sit down. “We were eighteen when they recruited us.” Seeing that Paul was about to ask her something, and guessing what it was she added, “Earth Intelligence. I was assigned to the data analysis division while Sybil was sent to espionage. They turned her into a succubus, like Crystal. Five years later someone managed to overload her cybernetic implants. Of course at the time no one knew what to do. All I could do was hold her hand as she died.” Anne was silent for a while before saying, “I'll never forget the look of pain and terror on her face as she died.”

“I'm sorry.”

Anne shrugged, “Yeah, well this is a dead end. It pretty much rules her out as the saboteur.” Anne sighed, “We better be getting back.”

“Don't you think Crystal will be able to help us?”

“After my sister died I did some research into what happened, which is how I knew what to do. What I read was that everyone who survived was driven insane by the experience.”

“Oh. Is it that painful?”

“It isn't just the pain. The victim suffers from some pretty horrific hallucinations as well. Well this wasn't completely wasted I've now got a reasonably good idea of who the saboteur is.”

“Um, are you planning on giving us a clue?”

“Not yet, no,” Anne answered, “I want to be certain before I tell anyone.”

As part of the Agencie's agreement with Mr Malevich they were too allow his assistant Ada Willis to look around all their facilities. It was made clear that if she wasn't happy with what she saw then the deal would be off and the agency would receive no further assistance. “So this is where most of the design work goes on?” Ada asked Katherine who had gotten the job of showing her around.

“Uh Yes.” Katherine said a little nervously. She had been given a long lecture about how important this tour was and it hadn't helped her nerves at all. “This whole building has been dedicated to designing the ship.”

“Which is being constructed up in orbit. I'd like to look around that too.”

“Oh, yeah. I mean of course. Basically I've been told to show you anything that you want.” Katherine hesitated then added, “Anything that isn't classified of course. Your boss is our largest sponsor.”

“That's good. Mr Malevich is starting to have some doubts about his involvement.”

“He is?” Katherine suddenly felt ill. She knew that she'd be blamed if he did pull out.

“Yes. As he told Ms Walker he was well aware of the risks of the flight but it seems that there is more to worry about than just technical problems. It seems that you have spies and saboteurs to worry about as well.”

“Oh yeah well hopefully we will be able to deal with that. So is there anything else you want to see here or shall we move to the Anderson?”

“I'd like to see the ship now.”

“Okay then well there should be a shuttle soon.”

As they made their way to the shuttle port Ada asked, “What do you do exactly?”

“Uh I'm kind of a floater. I get moved about to help any projects that are having problems.”

Ada studied Katherine a moment before asking, “If you don't mind me saying. You're bioengineered, aren't you?” As Katherine nodded she went on, “What class?”

“Uh, general purpose. What about you?”

“Combat.”

“Oh.” Katherine thought about this a moment then asked, “How did you end up working for Mr Malevich?”

“It's a long story,” Ada shrugged, “Maybe someday I'll tell you.”

“Oh well okay then.” Katherine paused as the shuttle pulled up in front of them, “I don't mean to pry.”

As the doors opened they both got on and went to sit down. The shuttle carried them to the space elevator which carried them up to the station. As they went up Ada asked, “So what's the ship to be called?”

“Well at the moment it looks like it's going to be called the MS Bad Wolf.”

“I see.” Ada frowned, “Not the name I would have picked.”

Katherine shrugged, “I suggested calling it the MS Windows but no one got the joke.” Katherine shrugged again then said, “Though do we really want the ship to be constantly crashing?”

Ada looked as if she was going to ask what Katherine meant but then decided to let it go, “You work for Anne, I mean Ms. Walker, don't you?”

Katherine nodded, “I'm in her department, yes.”

“What's she like to work for?”

“Good. She's a good engineer and, unlike a lot of the managers, she knows when to just let you get on with your job.”

“So you get on with her?”

“Yes. She's a very private person, and can be a bit distant, but most people like her. Why do you ask?”

“I was just wondering. When I talked to her she seemed...” Ada's neck and cheeks reddened slightly and she seemed a little less self assured as she finished, “nice.”

Katharine was going to respond but stopped as the shuttle reached the station and a voice announced that the doors were opening.

As they stepped out Ada quickly changed the subject, saying, “I just hope that Samantha knows what she's getting herself into. The conditions on the ship are going to be quite worse than what she's used to.”

Understanding that Ada was embarrassed, though not sure why, Katherine said, “Yeah there won't be much in the way of luxuries.”

“Oh well.” Ada sighed, “Ours is not to reason why, and so on and so forth.” She was silent a moment then said, “Though I have to say that out of all of Mr Malovich's children she is the least objectionable. Actually I think the two of you might get on quite well.”

“Really?” Katherine looked sceptical about this, “Well if you say so.”

***

Later that day Anne called Paul to her office. “So is this about the saboteur?”

“No, I wanted to talk to you about an idea I've had.” Anne was silent a moment as she fiddled with a pen. Finally she said, “Your wife, Karen she really hates me, doesn't she?”

“I wouldn't go that far.” Even as he said this Paul knew that it wasn't completely true. To a large extent Karen did hate Anne.

Anne nodded, not seeming to have heard what he had said, “She blames me for your breakdown.”

“Yeah, she just won't accept that I overworked myself, you didn't cause it.”

“I didn't help either though. I mean if I hadn't been so wrapped up in my own work then maybe I could have done more to prevent it.”

“Look it wasn't your fault.” Paul was surprised to hear Anne talk like this. She always seemed so confident and sure of herself. She wasn't normally given to bouts of self analysis.

“Maybe but I seem to have a knack for pissing off the spouses of people who work for me.”

“Who?”

“Sandra.”

“Come on,” Paul said, “you know she likes you.”

“I'm just not sure she will when she hears my idea.” Anne sighed then said, “I think we should send Katherine to Alpha Centauri.”

“What? Are you serious?” Paul suddenly had an idea about why Anne was worried that Sandra wouldn't like the idea.

“Very.”

“She's had no training for this.”

“That's hardly an issue.”

“But what about the risks?”

“There'll be risks no matter who we send. Given her unusual abilities I think that she will be best able to deal with anything unexpected that comes up.”

“Surely she isn't the only bioengineered of her type with the Agency.”

“Actually yes. The project that produced her was something of a failure. You know there were ten people in Katharine's batch. Seven of them had to be permanently confined at Sirius Planar. I think Katharine might have spent some time there. Out of the three remaining one is working for the security services, one drowned herself and then there's Katherine.”

Paul wanted to argue but he was hampered by the fact that Katherine was a perfect choice to send on the mission. So he raised the only objection that he could think of, “What if she refuses?”

“Then we'll find someone else. But, would you refuse?”

“No, of course not.”

“Well then I'll...” Anne stopped as her com system buzzed, “Richard, what can I do for you?”

“It's Crystal, she's asking to speak to you.”

“Okay then I'll be right there.” Anne turned to Paul asked, “Do you want to tag along?”

“No, I've got some work to be doing.”

“Okay then.”

***

“She's through here.” The nurse said as she led Anne through to a ward, “She's still very weak so try not to tire her out.”

“We wouldn't want that.”

Crystal sat up slightly and said, “I understand that you saved my life.”

For a moment Anne was surprised at how lucid Crystal seemed to be, “That's right, though I don't expect any gratitude for it.”

“Good. You know it was Agent Smith who tried to kill me.”

Anne nodded, “I think that he's another operative working for Earth.”

Crystal laughed, “And I was thinking that he just wanted to save on the cost of a trial.”

“Actually I could use your help. Smith has planted bombs on the ship. You could help us find out where they are.”

“You mean you want me to use my succubus powers?” Crystal asked in a mock shocked tone, “Isn't that a little hypocritical?”

“Why? I don't recall ever criticising your use of them. We all use the abilities that we were given and if we're not given any we buy some and use them instead.”

Ignoring Anne's comments Crystal asked, “What's in it for me?”

“A reduced sentence.”

“Right because this is going to go to trial,” Crystal snorted in disbelief, “Most of the evidence you've got is tainted.”

“You're right. I guess the usual procedure in this case would be to trade you for one of our agents being held by Earth, but Earth seems to want you dead, doesn't it?”

“So you're saying that if I help you I'll be extradited somewhere more conducive to my well being?”

“That pretty much sums it up.”

Crystal lay back and giving Anne a dismissive wave, said, “I'll think about it.”

“Don't strain yourself and don't take too long. We may decide that we don't need you.” Anne got up and left, suddenly feeling very dirty.

Hey Justin.

I have the "watch topic" set for this thread, but it failed to watch for me (although everytime I post in the 'update' thread, I get a notice that I'm watching *that* thread, and usually end up linking over to my own update notice--LOL). Short version --- I didn't know I'd missed an update!! And damn! What a great chapter. Loved the pace and how you answer a few of our question and just raise a dozen more. BRAVO. I also think it's one of the cleanest pieces you've posted. If I may make on itty bitty little request???? I'd love to see a bit more of the setting they're in, and possibly a few more physical responses/expression from the characters, but this is just an itty bitty little request. I know some of the places the readers already have a description of, but throwing in a reminder everyonce in a while helps the reader to pull the location forefront. It just adds a bit to the excitement, a line here or there places the reader in context. Okay enough of the mini-criticism...on on to the good parts....

Did I mention there are lots of good parts??? The characterisation is wonderful. Your people all are so distinct and I love the interplay between the characters. One of things I most dislike in sf are cardboard cutout with mouths. I never get this feeling with your characters -- they all have a story, something to ground them and help us care about who gets to Alpha Centauri first. 'Course, I'm a character driven reader (as if *that's* a news flash -lol) Lots of golden gems -- but Bad Wolf made me laugh. Uh, great choice...I think. [For anyone who hasn't seen the finale of Dr. Who, I'll turn the spoiler on for this next sentence.]
Spoiler:
Certainly hope things work out a bit better for the crew of the Mars ship than for the poor Doctor.
MS Window??? A ship that crashes a lot - LMAO!!

I loved the negotiation with Crystal. What an interesting twist. So, Earth wants her dead, and I loved Anne's moral neutrality with her,
“You mean you want me to use my succubus powers?” Crystal asked in a mock shocked tone, “Isn't that a little hypocritical?”

“Why? I don't recall ever criticising your use of them. We all use the abilities that we were given and if we're not given any we buy some and use them instead.”
Immediately followed by a sense of feeling 'dirty.' I guess this is the best example of your ability to really play with your characters. That little unexpected response on Anne's part speaks volumes. Gee, I never thought myself a mystery fan, but all the intreague you've interwoven into this story just keep me wanting more. Great bit of writing, and sorry for the delay in responding...LOL and yes, here it is...the board is notifying me that I've posted in the update thread as I write this...too funny.

Anyway. Thanks for a great update. You really moved things forward here. I liked the solution to Crystal's overload problems--quite a well thought out resonse and rationale (though, I think the doc was a bit too much of a pushover), oh, and that bone cracking -- I heard, yes heard, the snap in my head...shivers. But you've also got me wondering...why isn't Crystal on her way to sitting with the carots in vegitable alley??? Humm I say, and humm again. But maybe it's just that Anne got her the help needed before her brain turned into a mass of synaptic crisps (somehow, the North American 'chips' might have been more amusing...but I digress.)

Great action, great drama, great suspense. And since I'm like two weeks behind on this response...may I'll get luck and get an update soon....:) Wonderful bit of writing, Justin!

Cheers!!
Patches

ETA: This board really seems to hate me...keeps eating my posts (thank goodness I've learned to copy when I'm composing on the board itself, or use a word doc to save what I've written. Though, as the newest post, this should have bumped to the top, but instead, it remains buried, without registering an addition to the thread. Curious....maybe it's those darn Earth creeps -- no, wait, that would be one of us...scratch that...LOL Okay, I'm really done this time. Thanks Justin!!

My theory is the board is becoming self aware and is trying to communicate with us.

Though, that's my answer to anything acting eratically :)

I'd love to see a bit more of the setting they're in, and possibly a few more physical responses/expression from the characters, but this is just an itty bitty little request. Good points, I'll redouble my efforts in these areas.

Don't worry about being critical. Constructive criticism is always welcome.

'Course, I'm a character driven reader

What a coincidence, me too :)

I can't reveal the fate of any of the crew of the MS Bad Wolf but

Spoiler:
None of them turn into David Tennant

Thanks for all the insightful feedback. You say you're behind with the response but not as behind as I am with the next update, so I better get working on it. :kgeek

Oh and I think you might be right about Earthers tampering with the board. All part of their attempt to bring down the free people of Mars ;)

Good chapter, Justin.

Like Patches said above, you're very clever with answering six questions while raising twelve more. That's obviously one of your gifts and you use it well.

The MS Windows line...

If it were anyone other than you serving that one, it would have bombed. But your sense of timing and the dryness of the remark did the opposite. I laughed out-loud. (Of course, as a Linux/BSD geek, my read into the humor may have been a bit in favor of the punch lines.) Either way, very well done, with a serve, set, and match rhythm that you're really good at.

I especially like what you've done with Crystal. Anne intervenes and saves her life. In a less-interesting story, if Crystal were a shallow character, she would have been grateful, indebted, eager to help her new-found friend and savior Anne.

You took the better, more interesting and believable path. She isn’t going to help anyone without a bit of coercion—Even the person who apparently saved her life. That’s the mark of a well-built character.

Great stuff. I’m eager for more.

I have a gift? Cool :glasses

I'm glad it got a laugh out of you. I'm another Unix geek, which is why I had to include the line :devil

When I started posting the story I was worried that Crystal was a bit too much of a one dimensional psyco femme-fatale, so that has been one of the things I've been working on improving. I'm glad you're finding her to be an interesting and believable character.

Thanks for all the support and feedback :)

Apologies for the delay in posting the update. I'm in the middle of moving to a new flat (where I won't have internet access to start off with, so the next update won't come till next week. Hopefully Sunday or Monday, but don't quote me on that.

And here is the next part

Chapter 13 - Saboteur 2

The Alpha Centauri project faced delays after a serious explosion damaged the MS Bad Wolf. It is still unclear as to the cause of the explosion, though sources within the agency claim that it was as the result of sabotage. It is believed that there may be further explosive devices within the ship. With Earth already on the way to Alpha Centauri, this is a delay that Mars can ill afford.

As Anne was heading back she went to the shuttles communication centre and dialled the Paul's number, A few moment's later his cheerful visage appeared on the screen, "Hey Anne what's up?"

Not wasting any time with pleasantries Anne just said, "I'm switching to a random encryption sequence."

"Okay I'll do likewise." The image disappeared, replaced by a screen of static. A moment later it reappeared, with a lot more interference. "So what's up? Why all the paranoia?"

"I know who the saboteur is." Anne hesitated a moment wondering what Paul's reaction would be, "It's Smith."

"The Security Services agent? You're kidding."

"I wish I was. We know the bombs were placed around the time he was here inspecting the ship and also it was him who tried to kill Crystal."

"Well it sounds logical but..." Paul sounded as though he was still having trouble believing that someone from security was working for Earth.

"Look here's what I want you to do. Check the logs to find out what parts of the ship he accessed then scan them for explosives."

"Sure I'll get right on it. But what about Smith, shouldn't he be arrested or something?"

"Not till we've got all the explosives. He might have a way to set them off."

"Okay then. I'll let you know what I find."

***

After she'd finished talking to Paul Anne remained in the communication centre, thinking about the implications of her theory. For an Earth agent to have managed to infiltrate such an important position for so long, pointed to a serious breach in security. Shaking her head Anne told herself that it wasn't her problem. What was was the fact that it was probably Smith who had sent her that snuff movie. As long as security were able to pick him up, he wouldn't be a threat to her. Not that Earth wouldn't send more people. Shortly after Anne had moved to Mars a number of Earth agents working on Mars had been arrested. This had been after a long running operation by the Security Services, but, due to the timing, it had looked as though Anne had sold out those people.

***

Paul selected a group of technicians and they began sweeping the areas that Smith had been in, using a range of scanners. "So what are we checking for again?" One of the technicians asked, as his scanners once again reported that they'd found nothing.

"Bombs of course." Paul shook his head, "Where have you been the couple of few weeks?"

"Uh, living on Mars." the technician answered, with a slight smirk.

"Right. So have you got anything?"

"Nothing, we're not showing any explosives in this section."

"Right. Well let's move on then." Paul checked his computer then said, "This way."

***

Paul called Anne as soon as he finished the sweep. "So you didn't find anything?" She asked, not expecting to hear good news.

"Nope, nothing. Are you sure it's Smith?"

"Positive." Anne sighed. She hadn't expected the bombs to show up on a scan but had hoped that they might be able to avoid working with Crystal.

"So what are we going to do?"

With an unhappy expression Anne answered, "It looks like we need to go with plan B."

***

As soon as she finished talking to Paul Anne put a call through to Richard. Seeing her he said, "Anne I was just about to call you. Crystal has agreed to our offer."

"Good. When are you going to go ahead?"

"We thought it best to get moving as soon as possible so she's with Smith right now. There's one thing, she said she'll only give her results to you."

Anne shrugged and said, "Whatever. What about Smith? How do you know she won't try to get revenge."

"She's been made aware that that would be a very bad idea."

"Okay then. I'll come straight."

***

When Anne got to the prison Richard said, "That's good timing, my men are just bringing Crystal back."

"Did she get the information?"

"Won't say. We've got some men ready to pick up Smith as well as soon as you give us the all clear."

"I'd suggest that when you do you put him on suicide watch." Richard gave her a questioning look, "Just in case Crystal's left any delayed instructions."

"Good idea." There were a couple of beeps and Richard glanced at his communicator, "They're here."

"Well then let's see what she found out."

***

Anne walked into the cell and waited. A moment later a guard came in looking nervous. Anne could sympathise with this, knowing how good Crystal was at getting to people. The guard was followed by Crystal who looked bored by the whole experience. Though this was belied by the slight glint in her eyes.

"Did you get anything?" Anne asked, trying to keep the distaste out of her voice.

Crystal smiled as she held up a data rod. "It's all here." Anne reached to take the data rod, but Crystal pulled it away saying, "What do you say?"

Anne snatched the pad out of Crystal's hand. She glanced over the data before saying, "We've checked these areas."

Crystal examined her nails, picking at a spot of dirt as she answered, "I guess the bombs must be shielded somehow."

"Yes I guess so."

A small smile formed on Crystal's face as she asked, "How's Katherine doing? Recovering from her stint in a cell?"

"Why?" Anne asked, knowing that Crystal didn't like Katherine, "Do you care?"

"You know Smith chose her to frame because she was bioengineered, he really hates them."

Anne shrugged, "I'd assumed it was because she was important to the project."

"So are lot's of people. You know despite the attempt on my life, I have to appreciate him putting her through that discomfort."

"You really hate Katherine, don't you? Why, because she messed up your attempts to sabotage the project?"

"Hardly. I hate her because of her relationship with that... normal." The bored expression on Crystal's face disappeared a moment, replaced by one of distaste, "It sickens me the way she's trying to pretend she's one of them. She'll never be one and it's time she realised that."

Anne shook her head, stunned at the outburst. She'd known a few people take against Katherine because she was bioengineered, but never because she was married to a normal.

Recovering her composure, Crystal went on, "You know people have said I'm like a cobra. The way they seem to be able to mesmerise their prey."

"What?" Anne was rapidly losing track of the conversation.

"You know they're going to bite but you just can't seem to look away." Suddenly Crystal shot her hand out, pulling it along Anne's cheek. Anne was surprised to feel a shot of pain, and raising her hand to her cheek she found blood there.

"What the hell?"

Crystal raised her hands, revealing the fact that one of her nails had been cut to a sharp point. "Just a small momento, don't worry it's not poisoned."

"You are a fucking lunatic." Crystal just smiled in a way which made Anne want to punch her.

As Anne was leaving Crystal said, "Do you know what Tony said about you?" Anne stopped but she didn't respond, "He called you a sexless bitch." Crystal smiled as she said this, "He may even have used the word frigid."

Anne felt her right hand form into a fist. Taking a deep breath she tried to calm herself. Then, thinking, "To hell with self restraint." She spun round and stepping forwards Anne punched Crystal in the face. Crystal staggered back a step before falling to the floor.

The guards looked between the two women, wondering which one to restrain.

Crystal pulled herself up, not looking particularly fazed by the blow.

"It's okay," Anne said, "I'm done here." Turning to Crystal she said, "That was just a small momento."

***

Once Anne had gone a pair of guards came to lead Crystal back to her cell. One of them went up to her and pulled her arms behind her back and put on some manacles while the other kept an eye on her, his hand on his stunner.
As they were walking back, Crystal couldn't help smiling to herself. She had been greatly amused by the confrontation by with Anne. In fact it had almost been worth being caught for. That is if it hadn't been for the attempt on her life, which had been less than pleasant. Another thing that was amusing Crystal was the way the guards were watching her. "They're scared of me," she thought, " they think that I'm dangerous." Her smile grew as she thought, "They have no idea."
Crystal asked the guards, "Do you know something else that cobras can do?"

"Shut up bitch." One of them said.

"This." Crystal spat in his face. Screaming in pain the guard brought his hands up to his face. A moment later he fell to the floor.

The other guard looked torn between restraining Crystal and helping his colleague. Aiming his gun at Crystal he asked, "What the fuck did you just do?"

"I can show you if you want." Crystal answered. She took a step towards the guard, not seeming to be aware of the gun that he was pointing at her.

The guard took a step back and reached for his com unit. "Oh no you don't." Ducking down Crystal lashed her foot out, kicking the guard in the knee. As he fell she kicked him in the face. Searching through his pockets she found the key to her handcuffs and undid them. "Right, now to get out of here." She grabbed the guards com unit and gun went over to the nearest vent. Opening it she crawled in until she found a maintenance unit and strapped the gun and com unit to it. Crawling out Crystal opened up a door leading off from the hallway and went in.

***

When security got there to find out what had happened the first guard was just waking up. "She took us by surprise sir." He said to Richard, "She spat something in Davis' face and knocked me out."

One of the guards checked Davis before saying, "He's alive but we need to get him to the infirmary."

"Right." Richard activated his communicator and asked, "Has Anne left?"

"The shuttle just launched," the answer came.

"Good. I want the complex shut down. No one leaves till the prisoner is apprehended."

"Sir, she's got my com unit and gun," The guard reported.

"Well it should be quite easy to find her then." Richard was surprised by Crystal making a mistake like that, "Just how stupid is she?"

***

Crystal reached up to the back of her neck trying to figure out how to remove the inhibitor there. After a few seconds she decided she didn't have time to worry about that. Going up to a nearby computer she said, "Activate security override omega five."

"Please enter the override code."

Crystal whispered, "Thanks, Smith," as she typed in the override code. She then grabbed a data pad and asked the computer to transfer all security controls to it. After checking that she could access it she set off.

***

Crystal used the data pad to access a security locker then to remove the DNA lock from one of the guns. She then made her way to one of the domes airlocks.

Checking the security cameras in the aptmosphere suit rooms Crystal saw that there was only one person in it. Going in she aimed the gun at him and said, "If you want to live then I suggest that you do what I tell you."

***

Richard and the guards had just managed to track down the com unit. One of the guards pointed up to a vent in the ceiling, "It's stopped there."

Richard nodded to the guards who began moving round the vent, aiming their guns below it. He then pressed a button on his control pad, opening a vent. A couple of the guards jumped as a maintenance bot fell down, hitting the floor with a clang.
Richard swore as he realised what had happened. "I guess she's not as dumb as she looks," he admitted. The maintenance bot moved back and forth with it's sensors extended, trying to figure out where it was.

His comunicator came to life saying, "Sir one of the air locks just opened. We're showing one person leaving."

"Okay we better get after them."

***

Crystal had just made it to the docking bay when a voice said, "You didn't expect us to fall for that one twice." Richard stepped out of the shadows, a gun aimed at her.

"I saw the guards going after my decoy."

"You're not the only one who can use the misdirection trick. Though you must know that the docking bays will be shut off till we catch you."

"Yes, you see I was counting on the fact that you'd only send part of your team after the decoy. I was also hoping you'd be stupid enough to come after me alone."

"If you think you can do anything with that gun, then think again."

"Oh I don't need this." Crystal crouched down and laid the gun on the ground, "You're going to help me leave."

"Right. The inhibitor must be affecting your brain. It stops you succubus abilities from working."

Crystal started slowly moving towards him, "Oh that? I removed it."

"Then how come I can't feel anything."

"It wouldn't be much use if you knew what was happening. No, I just tell you what to do and without knowing why, you just do it. You can't help yourself."

"You're blu..." Richard stopped as he noticed that Crystal was directly in front of him. With one hand she snatched the gun out of his hand while with the other she punched him. Opening a pocket she pulled out a nueral control unit. Fitting it to Richards neck she tuned it to his brain patterns. She then activated his com unit and said, "Tell them Crystal has been captured. Unlock the docking bays."

After Richard did so the response came, "Right away sir." Crystal then set about making her escape.

***

When Richard woke up he wasn't surprised to find that Crystal had gone. The thing that did surprise him was that the docking bay was empty. "How the hell did she manage that?" There had been twelve planes in there when he had arrived so tracking the one she had left on would be rather difficult.

***

Anne watched with growing apprehension as the bomb crews went about finding and disarming the bombs. She gave a sigh of relief as the call came, "That's the last one." Though she knew it wasn't over yet. Turning on the com unit she said, "Okay get everyone out of there."

"So now what?" Paul asked.

"Now we make sure there aren't any bombs left."

"How do we..." He started to ask, then as he realised that there was only one way he finished, "Oh, you're going to use my idea."

"That's right."

"The ship is clear." The call came.

"Okay then start the sweep." Anne said.

"Sweep starting." They waited as the sweep ran across the ship.

After a couple of minutes Anne said, "I think we can safely say that we've got all the bombs."

"So we can get back to work?" Paul asked.

"Yes." Anne's com unit began beeping, "Richard what's up?"

"Can we talk in private?"

"Sure." Anne made her way to unused office and asked, "What's up?"

Richard hesitated a moment, "Crystal has escaped."

"What? I thought that you were taking precautions against her abilities."

"We did, the ones we knew about. We just didn't expect her to be able to spit poison. The mods seem to have been shielded against detection."

"I guess that must have been a surprise. Sounds expensive. It's not like Earth Intel to pay out that kind of money on their operatives."

"Actually our analysts think she had it put in on her own intitiative. EI probably don't even know about it."

Anne nodded. If Crystal was having her own implants put in then it might go towards explaining why EI wanted her dead. "Why didn't you shut the base down?"

"We did but she... well let's just say that she outsmarted us."

"Right well we'll keep an eye out for her here, but if she has any sense she'll try to get off planet as soon as she can."

"Yeah. Well I just thought you should know."

"Right, thanks. Though I was about to call you. We've cleared the bombs from the ship."

"Good. We'll pick up Smith right away."

***

When Katherine got home Sandra was surprised to see that she was looking worried, "What's wrong?" Even as she asked, Sandra was thinking about the possible answers. Her first thought was of the compatability test they'd just taken. "Have we had the results back?"

"No," Katherine shook her head, "it'll still be another week before we hear."

"Then, has something happened at work?" Sandra didn't really think anything could have gone too wrong at work, Katherine had been doing so well, but she couldn't think of anything else.

"Uh, yeah you could say that."

"Something bad?"

"No, well I guess it depends on how you look at it. I've been offered quite a good opportunity but I don't think that you're going to like it."

Sandra nodded, relieved that Katherine wasn't going to say she'd been sacked again. "Why not just tell me and we'll see about that."

"Okay, they want me to go to Alpha Centauri." For a while Sandra didn't say anything, "Um is this a good or a bad silence?"

"You're kidding, right?"

"No. They really want me on the flight."

"I don't know what to say. I mean if I had this chance I'd jump at it but it isn't me, it's you and I'm worried about you, that you won't come back."

Katherine stepped forward and took Sandra's hands, "I know that this is dangerous and also there's the whole being away from you for a couple of months thing to worry about, but I will come back."

"How can you know that?"

Katherine grinned as she answered, "Because of what I'm coming back to."

After a while Sandra finally said, "Well I guess that this is something you have to do."

"Really?"

"Like I said, if I'd been offered this then I'd jump on it. I can't deny you the same thing."

"Thanks."

"Just make sure you keep your promise."

"Have I ever broken a promise to you?"

Sandra smiled as she answered, "Just once or twice."

"Oh, well this time I won't."

Hey Justin,

You know, I'm really begining to like Crystal. You planted some interesting seeds earlier, and now that you've started to develop her character, she's fast becoming one of my favourites. What a great villan. I like that she's become multi-dimensional--always makes for a better read when you're engaged with a character like that. You've given us a reason to invest in her.

Great sequence with Anne here. You can feel the animosity building. Crystal might not be able to manipulate Anne, but ooo-eeee is that girl a button pusher. I like the dynamic you've added with her reference to beging glad Katherine was the one framed, and her reason. She views K as a sell-out. Interesting.

Oh, poor Richard--Think maybe in future the guards should be issued nose plugs and any order to lift an access restriction be verified by someone in a haz-mat suit?

Great work. I really like how you've developed a nice flow to this story. Once again, answer one question, raise several more. Looking forward to more.

Cheers!!

Good update, Justin. You're pretty skilled with action and suspense and this installment showcases your abilities well.
Crystal is a great, worthy character loaded with real, credible menace. Good job with that. The forward-back-back-forward pitch of the plot is mesmerizing.

Sandra and Katherine at the end though... I'd have injected a lot more demonstration of conflict on both their parts. It's a situation that, IMO, deserves much more strife and mentation than what you've illustrated to us. Just a thought.

Also, the bomb-sweep-- the final one-- should be either more protracted (take advantage of non-forced suspenseful moments) or much less certain in its outcome. The way that you've handled it tends to make me see the bomb issue as a bit of a cul-de-sac in the continuum of the storyline. That's not to say that it didn't serve other and more obvious purposes, but it, of itself, was a problem that appears to have been created and solved very handily.

So now Sandra has to kiss Katherine goodbye, see her off for a multi-month stint into the boundaries of human exploration. I hope their last night together is a good one. It may be (for all they know) their last.
Awesome update.

Firstly as I've written a couple of times I was a bit worried about whether Crystal would come across as being a credible character, so I'm glad people are finding her to be engaging and likeable (in an evil kind of way)

Crystal is pleased as well :devil

Patches:

Crystal might not be able to manipulate Anne, but ooo-eeee is that girl a button pusher.

This is a pretty good summary of her character. She enjoys pushing people's buttons because, in her eyes at least, it's the only thing she's got going for her.

I like the dynamic you've added with her reference to beging glad Katherine was the one framed, and her reason. She views K as a sell-out. Interesting.

I thought this was an interesting addition to her character since up till this point all of her actions had been basically self serving. This is the first time we actually see her having principles, even if they're not necessarily good ones.

Oh, poor Richard--Think maybe in future the guards should be issued nose plugs and any order to lift an access restriction be verified by someone in a haz-mat suit?

Ah yes, yet another person who's been pwned by Crystal. Though it has to be said, his biggest mistake was a mistake that people have been making for as long as Crystal has lived, he underestimated her.

Once again, answer one question, raise several more

I may have said this before, but it bears repeating, This is a style of story telling I learnt from watching Babylon 5 :)

StrangeQuark:

Good update, Justin. You're pretty skilled with action and suspense and this installment showcases your abilities well.

ty :stop

Sandra and Katherine at the end though...

True. I wasn't happy with that scene, but couldn't quite see how to make it better.

Also, the bomb-sweep-- the final one-- should be either more protracted (take advantage of non-forced suspenseful moments) or much less certain in its outcome. The way that you've handled it tends to make me see the bomb issue as a bit of a cul-de-sac in the continuum of the storyline.

You're right. The bombing serves two purposes
1: reveal Smith as a spy
2: Force Anne to work with Crystal

The problem is it's a bit too obvious that it doesn't have any purpose in and of itself, it's just there to move the other plots forwards, which removes some of the tension.

Thankyou both for your feedback. Reading it makes me :-D

N.B. I know that plagarism is very bad. SO I have to confess that in this part I have plagarised myself. See if you can spot where :)

Chapter 14 – Broken Hearted

“On a lighter note there was a rather unusual proposition put towards the Mars parliament today. One of the landmarks on Earth has always been Mount Rushmore, A monument showing some of America's presidents. Today an MMP suggested that we build a similar monument showing some of the great presidents of Martian history. This proposition was widely criticised with cost being the main objection, however there are some who believe that this would be a fitting tribute to Mars' culture and history.”

***
The training centre for the Mars space agency was situated to the south of the colony. It was spread out over a wide area, comprising of central, large building surrounded by a group of smaller buildings. The central building was a C shape, surrounding a large courtyard, which is where the prospective astronauts gathered.
Captain George Peters stepped out onto a balcony overlooking the courtyard, followed sharply by David Allen, his first officer. He gazed at the people below a while, sizing them up before saying, with a certain amount of disdain, “So these are the people who the Agency think will get us to Alpha Centauri. They don't exactly look as if they have the right stuff.”

“They do look like the dregs of the Agency,” David said.

The captain leant against the railing and asked,“So who have we got?”

“Okay the woman standing off to the left is the spoiled brat. She's just here because daddy helped with building the ship. Next to her is gene freak number one, she's an engineer. Some sort of super genius apparently”

“She flew the prototype didn't she?” George asked, his expression dark.

“Yeah. Next is the oddball, he's a medic. Then you've got the loner who's the navigator, gene freak number two who's the pilot, Shorty who's going to be doing any space walks and the twins who are astronomers.”

“Lovely.” He shook his head looking skeptical about the people below, “Well let's go and meet them.”

***

After being introduced to each other the group went through to the cafeteria in order to have some breakfast. As Katherine entered Simon Jones, the one who would be doing the space walk, stood up and said, “Let's hear it for the first Martian to break the light barrier.” Almost everyone in the room began applauding, with a few standing up.

The cafeteria was busy so the affect was quite overwhelming to Katherine who raised a hand and said, “Uh, thanks.” Wanting to get out of the spotlight she quickly grabbed a chair and sat down.
It turned out that the seat was next to Samantha Malovich, who was looking at her breakfast with an unhappy expression, “Well this is nice.”

“You better get used to it. The food on the ship is going to be worse,” Katherine said before prodding at her food, looking uncertain about eating it.

Samantha sighed, “Well I knew what I was getting into. I mean a chance to see Alpha Centauri is worth a little discomfort.”

Katherine thought about pointing out that it would be more than a little discomfort, but decided against it. “Yeah, I guess it is.” Katherine smiled, “I mean I wouldn't be here if I didn't think so.”

Samantha took another bite and sighed again, “Have you ever been to Luna?”

“Yes,” Katherine said, her head bobbing up and down, “Sandra and I went for our honeymoon.”

“That's lovely. So you'll know how much of a change this is.”

“Yeah, you have my sympathies.” Katherine patted Samantha's arm.

“Thanks. So when you were on Luna, did you see any of the sights?”

“Oh yeah, we went to one of their shows.”

“Shows? I meant the Sea of Tranquility, or the site of the first moon landing.”

Katherine looked embarrassed a moment, “Oh yeah, so did I.”

“Oh, you meant the pussycat girls.”

Katherine nodded.

“Nothing to be embarrassed about, most people who got to Luna do.” She glanced slyly at Katherine a moment, “So you like seeing the ladies stripping and dancing round in clothes that epitomise the concept of less is more.”

“Uh, um, no comment.”

Samantha decided to be merciful and getting out a data pad and said, “I notice that I'm not listed as having any responsibilities.”

“Well I think that's kind of because you're seen as being a passenger.”

“Oh. But I've got a degree in engineering and I want to help.”

Katherine shrugged, “You should talk to the captain then.”

“Yeah, I will.”

Katherine studied Samantha a moment, with a thoughtful expression, “You know you're not what I expected.”

“What did you expect?”

“Uh, I was kind of expecting for you to be spoiled. Sorry.”

“Don't be.” Samantha grinned, “I am.”

“Oh. Well I guess Ada was right.”

Samantha looked intrigued by this, “Why? What did she say?”

“That I'd like you.”

Samantha smiled and said, “Funny she said the same thing to me about you.”

***

As Paul and Karen got dinner ready he said, “I was just thinking, you know how we've got a spare room?”

Karen gave her husband an exasperated look, “You've already got one games room.”

“I wasn't going to suggest that.”

“Oh, so what do you want to turn it into?”

“Actually I was going to say that Sandra is probably going to be lonely when Katherine's away so why don't we invite her to stay over.”

“That's a good idea. She could probably use the company and I can go over my new play with her.”

“I'm sure she'll like that.” Paul said in as a flat a tone as he could manage.

“Was that sarcasm?”

Paul looked as though he were offended by the suggestion, “Of course not.”

“Well good. I think that she will really like this one.”

“Oh, this is the one I haven't been allowed to see?”

“Exactly.”

***

Katherine quickly moved to stop the overload that was building in the ships engines. Rolling her chair over to another control panel she shut down two of the generators before going back to the main controls to check the status. She noticed a power spike but was able to stop it from reaching the engines. Seeing that things were starting to get back under control she gave a sigh of relief, only to see two more, larger power spikes. She tried to divert them but was too late. Almost immediately one of the engines failed, giving off a power surge. Then the others began failing in an avalanche. A few seconds later the simulation shut down. A door opened and Captain Peters came in. “Well done, you just killed us all.”

Standing up Katherine gestured angrily, “What the hell was that? That last power surge, that couldn't happen.”

“We're supposed to be training to deal with unexpected situations. That's the whole point of the simulation.”

“There is no point to it if you're going to use bogus data into it. Garbage in garbage out.” Katherine rarely got angry but this was one of the few occasions that she found herself losing her temper.

“That will do.” George said quietly.

“You're right it will.” Turning Katherine stormed out of the simulator.

***

Finding Katherine in the lunch hall Samantha sat down next to her saying, “I understand that you're having trouble with the captain.”

“You could say that.”

“You're not going to quit are you? I mean I hate to sound selfish but you're only person here who'll talk to me.”

“No, I'm not going to. It's just...”

“Yes?”

“We're supposed to be training how to take the flight and deal with any problems, that's what the simulations are supposed to be, situations we might face during the flight. It's not supposed to be the sodding Kobiashi Maru.”

Samantha nodded then said, “Forgive me for saying this but the captain doesn't seem to like you very much.”

“No he doesn't. I guess it's because I'm bioengineered.”

“Well he is rude to the other bioengineered, Damien, as well but I think it's more than just that.”

Katherine thought about it then said, “You're right it is. I'll have to ask him about it.”

“Do you think that he'll tell you?”

“Only one way to find out.” Katherine answered with a shrug. Leaving the mess hall she wondered if this was really the right thing to do. She tried to bolster her confidence by telling herself the direct approach had worked with Megan.

***

George looked up as a shadow fell across him, “I thought that you had quit the project.”

“Huh, you wish.” Katherine snorted.

“Actually yes I suppose that I do.”

“Now this is exactly what I wanted to talk to you about. What have I done to offend you?”

“Tony,” George said simply.

For a moment Katherine didn't know what he was talking about, “What about him?”

“What about him?” George shouted, his cheek flushed red. Calming a little he said in a quieter tone, “He's dead because of you.”

“What? No he's not.”

“Right, you decided you wanted the glory of breaking the light barrier and you discredited him in order to get the chance.”

“You know you really need to get your facts straight before accusing someone like this. Tony's dead because he made the mistake of dating a psychopath with strange mind control abilities.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Crystal, Tony's girlfriend. It's clear that it was her who made Tony kill himself, just like she made him break a bottle over the back of my head and she most likely made him mess up the first attempt.”

“Do you expect me believe that?”

“Hope, yes; expect, no.” Not waiting for a response Katherine turned and left.

***

Karen had just loaded her play up so that she could start working on it when the door bell rang. Suspending her computer she got up and answered it. There was a small man there who bowed and said, “I'm here representing Ms Amber. I'd like to talk to you about your play.”

“Sure come in.” She led him through to the living room where the man got a small device out of his briefcase and placed it on the coffee table. As he turned it on a hologram of a young, golden haired, woman appeared standing next to the table.

“Hello, I'm Amber.” The woman said, bowing in the same way her agent had.

“Uh, hello.” Karen said, with a shocked expression.

“You seem surprised.”

“Uh, forgive me but I thought that you had been deleted.”

“No, rumours of my deletion had been exaggerated. Though I did fall out of the public eye after being replaced by newer AIs. It seems there is only enough room for a few AIs on the public stage at a time so when new ones are produced, the old ones are forgotten about.”

“I guess that must suck.”

“In some ways. However I have spent the time studying various subjects including various schools of acting. Which brings me to why I'm here. I want to try out what I learned by appearing in one of your plays.”

“You want to act in a play?” Karen said, not sounding as if she believed it, “You want to act in one of my plays.”

“Yes and yes.” Amber tilted her head, considering Karen's response, “Is it so hard to believe?”

“Actually yes.”

“Well I am being completely serious.”

“Oh well I'm working on a play at the moment, I think there's probably a part which would fit you.”

“Excellent. I'll get my people to get in touch with you.” With that the man, who had been silent the whole time stepped forward and switched the projector off.

He then put it away and said, “Goodbye.” Before leaving. Karen restarted her computer and went back to her play, still feeling mystified by the whole encounter.

***

When Katherine got home she went in shouting, “I have had the worst day ever.”

Coming out to meet her Sandra asked, “Why, what happened?”

“Oh, it's just the captain has serious issues. The main one being that he's a jerk.”

“I'm sorry to hear that, but this might cheer you up,” Sandra held up a letter then said, “At least I hope it will, I haven't read it yet.”

“What is... Is it the test results?”

Sandra nodded. She beckoned Katherine over, who approached with a look of excitement on her face. Sandra opened the envelope and they both quickly scanned the contents of the letter.

For a few minutes neither of them spoke.

“I'm sorry,” Katherine said, her voice cracking, “This is my fault.”

“What? No, of course it isn't.”

“But it's my freaky DNA that's the problem,” Katherine argued.

Moving her hand to Katherine's chin and moving her face to look at her she said, “Katherine, this isn't your fault.”

“I'm sorry, but I think I need to be alone for a bit.” Katherine turned and walked towards the stairs.

“This doesn't change anything,” Sandra said. As Katherine stopped and turned to look at her she went on, “I mean, don't for a moment think this changes how I feel about you.”

Katherine nodded, then went upstairs.

Going into the kitchen Sandra screwed up the letter and threw it into the waste unit as hard as she could. Not gaining any satisfaction from this she kicked the door of a cupboard, then twice more for good measure.

Then, sitting down, she started crying.

***

When Paul got home from the agency Karen greeted him by telling him her news.

“Uh, Amber, I don't think I remember the name.”

“She was in the latest version of Lord Of The Rings and the remake of that film about the vampires from that small Greek island.”

Paul was going to point out that that wasn't what the film was about but then he realised who Karen meant, “Oh yeah, now I remember her. I thought that she'd been deleted.”

“So did I. Apparently not.”

“Well this should be fun.”

“Yeah, as long as she doesn't get all prima dona-ish. Anyway there was something else that I wanted to talk to you about.”

“There was?”

“Yes. Next week Katherine will have to move to the station won't she?”

“Yes. She won't be able to see Sandra after that.”

“Well we should have a party the night before. Give her a proper send off.”

“That's a good idea. We should invite some of the other people from the project.”

Karen looked doubtful a moment, “That would include Anne wouldn't it.”

“Yes. She is Katherine's friend. I know that you don't get on but don't you think this grudge has gone on long enough?”

Karen sighed, “I guess I can put up with her for one night.”

“Good. Thanks.”

***

The next day, sitting in the simulator Katherine tried to keep her mind on the controls but all she could think about was the contents of the letter. There was only a twenty percent chance that her and Sandra's DNA could be combined to produce a viable embryo. Worse was the fact that even if they did create a viable embryo there was only a ten percent chance of the child surviving to term. She was snapped out of her thoughts by an alarm sounding. A quick look at the readouts showed they were suffering power surges. She recognised it as being the same problem as yesterday. Not feeling up to dealing with this, or the captain should she fail to prevent a catastrophic failure she began shutting down the generators, knowing this would prevent any dangerous surges. Her hand hesitated a moment over the life support control, before powering it down.

“Katherine, what exactly are you doing?” The captain's voice came over the intercom.

“I'm shutting down all non essential systems until the power network can be fixed.”

“Life support is hardly non essential.”

“Actually it is. There is enough good air on the ship to last two hours and if the problem hasn't been fixed by then then we can use breather units.”

“All right then but a little warning would be useful.”

“Understood.” Katherine gave a small sigh of relief, thinking she had managed to get through the session without a confrontation.

“It's certainly a better response than allowing an overload, then running off crying about it,” The captain said before shutting off the intercom.

Katherine sighed, realising it had been too much to hope for.

***

On the night of the party Sandra went upstairs to find Katherine sitting quietly in their bedroom. “Are you okay?”

Turning Katherine managed a weak smile as she said, “Truth be told, I'm not feeling in a partyish mood.”

Sandra nodded, “Me neither. I would suggest not going but I think Paul and Karen have gone to a lot of trouble.”

“Well it'll be good to have our minds taken off things.” Katherine looked at her feet a moment then said, “I'm sorry.”

“I thought we agreed it isn't your fault.”

“I didn't mean that. I meant for how I reacted, for running away from you. We need to face this together.”

Sandra walked to stand behind Katherine, putting her arms round Katherine's shoulders. “We are going to face this together and we're going to get through it.” Leaning forwards she kissed Katherine on the top of the head,

***
Paul and Karen had been surprised when Katherine and Sandra arrived early. They had protested when Sandra had explained wanting to help get everything ready, but soon gave in.

Sandra and Katherine were bringing some plates outside when Paul stopped them and said, “You really don't have to do this.”

“But we want to.” Sandra answered.

“So Katherine are you excited?” Karen asked, joining the other three.

“Well excited about getting to Alpha Centauri but not about being away from my girl for so long.”

“I can understand that,” Karen agreed, “I hated it when Paul had to go away to a conference.”

“You could always smuggle me on board.” Sandra suggested as she came out with some more plates.

“I don't think that would work out.”

“Fine be like that,” Sandra put her nose up in the air as she breezed past Katherine.

Katherine turned to Paul and Karen, “Thanks for taking care of Sandra while I'm gone.”

“Hey! I don't need taking care of.” Sandra protested.

Ignoring this Katherine went on in a stage whisper, “Make sure she always has clean clothes, she has a tendency to forget.”

“That's it! I'm so getting a divorce while you're gone.”

As she went back inside Katherine laughed, “Promises, promises.”

***

The party was just getting going when Donald approached Katherine. “Hey Katherinbe, I'm afraid I'm going to have to get going.”

“But you've only just arrived,” Katherine protested.

“Yeah, I've got a lot of work to do tomorrow. I really only came to wish you good luck, and a safe voyage.”

Nodding Katherine said, “Thanks for coming. Before you go can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

“Have I done something to upset Megan?”

Donald looked nervous a moment before saying, “Has she said something?”

“No, but she's been acting kind of funny round me.” Looking round she added, “I was going to ask her today but she doesn't seem to have turned up.”

“Well Megan said she was feeling kind of sick,” Donald said, not looking as though he believed this. “you see she's not been happy since the news about you going to Alpha Centauri.” Donald started squirming, obviously not happy to be discussing this.

Katherine nodded, not entirely surprised. “Well thanks again for coming,”

***

Karen was out in the kitchen getting the last bits of food ready, with Sandra helping her. “You know you don't need to help,” Karen said, “This party is as much for you as it is for Katherine.”

“I think I just need to keep busy at the moment. Otherwise I start thinking about next week and the chance that when they start the engines up the ship will blow up.”

Reaching out to touch Sandra's arm Karen said, “It'll be okay.” Stepping back Karen decided to change the subject, “Have I told you my news?”

“Only a couple of dozen times.” Smiling Sandra went on, “But I can understand you being excited.” Blushing slightly and lifting her hand to deal with a rogue strand of hair she added, “I had a crush on Amber when I was younger.”

Raising an eyebrow Karen said, “Really?”

“Yeah. That was when I first started to figure out that I was bisexual.” They both stopped as Katherine came in writing on her data unit. “You know it's bad form to text people at a party,” Sandra said.

“Oh I just want to send this one message then I'm going to turn it off.”

Sandra took the device off of Katherine and read, “Some friendly advice. Get over yourself.” Handing it back she said, “Nice. Who's it to?”

“Megan. Well she said before that I was too nice. So this will either make her happy or make her hate me more. Either way, I'm rapidly ceasing to care.”

Karen and Sandra looked at each other but neither said anything about this.

Katherine looked around and said, “Why are we all standing in the kitchen?”

“I need you to take some plates through,” Karen answered, picking the plates up.

Before Katherine could respond Anne came in saying, “I wonder if I could have a glass of water?”

“I guess so.” Karen answered before going to get it.

“You know you don't look too good.” Katherine said.

“I've been out of breath all evening for some reason.” Anne managed a weak smile, “I guess I'm getting out of shape.”

“She's right you look awful.” Sandra said as she moved a stool out from under the counter, “You should sit down.”

Anne nodded as she sat down. She looked puzzled a moment then said, ”My arm keeps aching.” Turning to Karen she said, “I think that I might have to go home early.”

“Well that would be a....” Karen stopped, the glass slipping from her hand, as she saw Anne tumble from her chair, a look of pain on her face.

“Oh god.” Anne moaned as she tried to get up.

“Where does it hurt?” Sandra asked as she rushed over and knelt beside Anne.

“My... chest,” Anne gasped.

“Just lie still, don't try to get up.” Sandra suggested. She began loosening Anne's clothes while saying, “Just take slow deep breaths.” Looking up she started, “We need to get...” She stopped as she saw that Katherine already had her phone out.

“Hello, we need an ambulance at two oh five Samson Terrace. Anne, she's having a heart attack.”

Great update.

I’m going to stab at a guess as for the plagiarism... Futurama? With the lunar tourist sites?

I’m guessing that the little reference to Katherine sneaking Sandra aboard the AC ship is going to remain a mere reference, or could there be a daring caper about to transpire? Perhaps the test results have been tampered-with, and Katherine and Sandra may return from AC with the first child born above lightspeed? Anne may suddenly be in a much different role... Hmmm....

As always, you’ve left me with lots to consider. Great job.

Oops, I guess I wasn't clear. I meant I'd plagarised something that I'd written previously. Which I guess most people would call recycling, so realliy I was just being enviromentally friendly. Anyway it was this bit

Katherine studied Samantha a moment, with a thoughtful expression, “You know you're not what I expected.”

“What did you expect?”

“Uh, I was kind of expecting for you to be spoiled. Sorry.”

“Don't be.” Samantha grinned, “I am.”

Which is very similar to the exchange between Morgan and Princess Beatrice at the beginning of Ever After.

As for your other ideas, those are very interesting, in an I wish I'd thought of them kind of way :)

Though the reason why Katherine says that sneaking Sandra on wouldn't work is because even if she did get on she'd be spotted right away due to the increased oxygen usage.

Also given the fact this is the first such trip it's hard to know what sort of effect an extra person would have on their calculatiuons. It probably wouldn't be much but they don't know how much margin for eror their is.

Thanks for the feedback

Next up it's the launch

N.B. I've recently had an idea for a new storyline in the later chapters. This has meant having to make some changes to chapters 10 & 11. The main change is I've increased Katherine's time in prison from a few hours to a few days

Chapter 15 - The Launch

Tonight on Equinox, The Mars Experiment. In the past socialism has been attempted many times with only minimal success. We look at the causes of these failures and speak to political analysts to whether Mars' attempt at the socialist dream is any more likely to succeed. That's the Mars Experiment, Equinox tonight at nine.

Karen went to wait outside for the ambulance whilst Katherine and Sandra stayed with Anne, and her husband relayed the news to the guests. She paced back and forth in front of the door, occasionally glancing inside to see what was going on

She heard the siren for the ambulance before she actually saw it. As the ambulance pulled up she ran over to it to greet the paramedics. Rushing into the kitchen they fitted an oxygen mask over Anne's face and fitted a heart regulator. They lifted Anne onto a stretcher then carried her out to the ambulance. As they were leaving Paul asked, “Which hospital are you taking her to?”

“Southside.”

***

Once the ambulance had gone they saw the guests off before heading to the hospital. After arriving they were told that Anne was still in the emergency room and directed to a wait room. Katherine and Sandra sat next to each other, their arms round each others back. Karen was sitting on the opposite side of the room while Paul paced in front of her.

“I can't believe it,” Paul was saying, heart disease was rare, especially in someone as young as Anne.

“I can,” Karen said quietly. “Some time ago Anne told me that she'd been having chest pains. I told her to see a doctor. After a lot of persuasion she eventually did. He told her if she didn't take things easier, stop overworking herself, she was risking having a serious heart attack.”

It was a couple of hours before they could go to see Anne. Going in Paul was surprised by how weak Anne looked. Her skin was pale and slightly damp, there was a narrow tube going to her nose.

“The doctors said I had a major cardiac episode,” Anne explained. She turned to Sandra and Katherine, “Thank you, both of you. The doctors say that your quick thinking saved my life.”

“Uh well you're welcome.” Sandra said, blushing a little.

“So what caused it? Stress?” Paul asked, thinking about what Karen had told him.

“No.” Anne shook her head, her movements constrained by the tube going to her nose. “It seems that my arteries had become blocked.”

“How did that happen?” Karen asked.

“I don't know. I had a check up a few months ago and that didn't find anything. Well they injected me with a load of nanites which should clear the blockage.”

There was a knock at the door and a doctor came in. “Ah Anne, I have the results of your tests. Do you want to hear this in private?”

“No they can hear it.”

The doctor glanced down at his chart a moment, “Right well it seems that the obstructions weren't natural. You had recently been injected with nanites that had been set to block your arteries, causing the heart attack.”

“The fucking bitch,” Anne swore.

“Who?” The doctor looked puzzled.

“Crystal. She must have injected them into me when she cut my face.”

“Wait a minute didn't you save her from an agonising death?” Sandra asked.

“That's right.”

“But then why try to kill you. It doesn't make sense.”

“Maybe it's because I uncovered her as being a spy, maybe because...” Anne stopped. She'd been going to say because she was immune to Crystal's manipulation, but, remembering the way Crystal had gotten to her, she realised that that wasn't entirely true. “The point is people like her don't need a reason to kill, they just need an excuse.”

“Well anyway we're going to need to keep you in hospital till we're certain that all the nanites have been destroyed or they could just rebuild the blockages,” The doctor interrupted.

When the doctor had gone Anne said to the others, “I wonder if I could ask you to look after Tabitha for me. Just while I'm in hospital.”

They all looked at each other, an expression of confusion on their faces. Finally Sandra asked, “Tabitha?”

“My cat.” Anne answered.

“Oh well we'd be happy to.” Paul answered, ignoring the scowl from his wife.

“Thanks. I'd rather she not have to go to a kennel.”

***

The next day Katherine went to catch the space elevator up to the Anderson space station. Standing at the entrance she said to Sandra, “I'm really going to miss you.”

“You too.”

“Well two months isn't that long I'm sure that it'll fly past.”

“For you maybe. You'll be busy having wild adventures while I'll just be back here missing you.”

“Sorry.”

“It's a pity we won't be able to talk till you get there.”

“Yeah. It's a shame we couldn't get the communication systems working while we're traveling. Well I'll be sure to call when we arrive. I may even send pictures.”

“You do that.”

“About the test results, I really am sorry.”

Sandra scowled at this, “I thought that we agreed it wasn't your fault.”

“I meant about the way I reacted, I shouldn't have run off like that. This is the sort of thing we should deal with together.”

“Thank you,” Sandra said, smiling, “I appreciate you saying that. We can still have a child you know.”

“But it won't be mine. I mean I won't be it's mother.”

Sandra shook her head, a perplexed expression on her face. “How can someone so smart, be so dumb at times? There's more to being a mother than just DNA. However we have this child you will be its mother.”

Katherine nodded, but didn't say anything. They stood in silence for a couple of minutes before Katherine said, “Well I better get going.” Stepping forward suddenly Sandra hugged Katherine and started kissing her. In between kisses Katherine said, “I really need to get going.”

“Well then go.” Sandra answered.

“Uh in a little while.”

***

Sandra went back home to pick up her things then went to Paul and Karen's house. She was met by Paul who offered to bring her bags in, but Sandra waved him away. As she carried her bags in she said, “I want to thank you again for having me. I didn't really feel like staying in my house all alone.”

“We thought that it might be difficult being on your own.” Paul said.

Sandra looked around then asked, “So where's Alexander?”

“At school.”

“Oh yeah, I should have thought of that. So which room is it?”

“It's up the stairs then the last door down the hall. Are you sure you Don't want me to take any of those bags?”

“Nah, I've got it.”

“Okay, well if you need anything then just ask.”

“Okay then. When will breakfast be?”

“Uh, when you make it.”

“Oh, I had a feeling that would be the answer.”

Sandra carried her bags up to her room and set them down on the bed. She took a moment to look round the room before starting to unpack. She was just hanging some clothes in the wardrobe when Karen came to the doorway, “Knock knock.”

“Hi.”

“So have you found everything okay?”

“Yes, thanks.”

“Well if you need anything then just ask.”

Sandra smiled at this, “Paul already said that.”

“Oh, well you know what they say.”

“Great minds think alike?”

“Actually I was going to say fools seldom differ, but I think that I prefer your version. Anyway I'll leave you to your unpacking.”

***

Once she had unpacked everything and got settled in Sandra went to the hospital to visit Anne. Going into her room she said, “Hi, how are you feeling?”

“Like I've had a heart attack.” Anne responded.

“I think that Tabitha is missing you.”

“I doubt that. As long as she's being fed, I doubt if she even notices that I'm not there.” Anne sat up a little, looking a little worried, “You are feeding her right?”

“Of course, as if we'd neglect such a cute little cat.”

Anne lay back again, “Thanks, I really appreciate you taking care of her.”

“Don't worry about it. You just worry about getting better.” Sandra looked at a machine that was by Anne's bed. There were a couple of tubes running between it and Anne which had blood running through them.

“Oh that. They're running my blood through it in order to help purify it.”

“Oh kind of like a dialysis machine.”

“I guess. So what about you? Did Katherine get to the station okay?”

“Yes, she left a couple of hours ago.”

“I'm sorry.”

“Whatever for?”

“Well it was my idea.”

“Yes, but this is a great opportunity for Katherine. It'll be hard being apart from each other for a couple of months but we'll survive and apparently absence makes the heart grow fonder.”

Anne shrugged, “I wouldn't know.”

Sandra suddenly jumped up, “Oh I almost forgot, I got some flowers.” She reached into her bag and got a bouquet of flowers out. “Now where's a vase?”

“In the cupboard over there.” Sandra got the vase and went to fill it with water before coming back and arranging the flowers. “They're nice.” Anne said, before adding, in a small voice, “Chocolates would have been nicer.”

Sandra reached into her bag again and pulled out a box and said, “You mean like these?”

“You are an angel.” Anne said, “If you weren't already married then I would propose to you right now.”

“So is the real reason you suggested Katherine for the mission? Get her out of the way so you could hit on her wife?”

“No, that's just a side benefit.” Anne turned to the window then said, “Do you know what I miss most about Earth?”

“No.”

“Snow. We never get any here living under domes.”

“There are the ski resorts.”

“It's not the same if you don't see it falling.”

“Sorry,” Sandra shrugged, “There's nothing I can do about it.”

“I know, I wasn't expecting you to whip up a blizzard for me. It's just with every thing that's been going on lately I've been thinking a lot about Earth, my life there. I mean I'm glad that I moved to Mars, I've never once regretted that. It's just, sometimes I miss snow.”

***

Sandra stayed for a couple of hours before returning home. When she got back Paul asked her, “How's Anne?”

“She seemed to be okay.”

“You don't seem to be too certain.”

“It's just she seems so lonely.”

“Well having to stay in hospital is never fun.”

“I don't just mean now.”

“Oh. Well I guess that I never really thought about it.”

“It just seems that the thing she's closest to is this ball of fur.” Sandra bent down and picked up Tabitha.

“Now you mention it the only picture she's got in her office is of her and another woman, who I guess was her sister.”

“Sister? I didn't know Anne had one.”

“Yeah well she...” Paul stopped as he realised that he didn't know whether Anne would mind him telling people what she had told him about her sister, so he finished, “She died some time ago.”

“Oh. That's sad.”

“So have you got any idea what we can do to help Anne?”

“Uh that's a good question.” Sandra gave him a sheepish look before adding, “Unfortunately I don't have a good answer.”

***

The next day Katherine went for her medical. She was a little nervous as she knew that if she failed this she would be pulled from the mission and one of the alternates would go in her place. As she walked into the medical centre a doctor looked up from the chart that she was reading and said, “Take a seat I'll be with you in a moment.”

Katherine sat down and wondered what sort of tests she would do. A few moments later the doctor came over and said, “If you'll just undo your shirt I need to attach some electrodes.” Katherine did so and the doctor attached a pair of electrodes to her chest and a pair to her forehead. While the doctor was sticking the electrode on Katherine's chest Katherine couldn't help hissing with pain. “Is something wrong?” The doctor asked.

“My sides been sore lately.”

“Let me take a look at it.” He poked Katherines side asking, “Does this hurt?” Katherine nodded, After examining her a bit more the doctor said, “You seem to have bruised your ribs. It doesn't seem to serious. So don't worry it won't stop you making the flight.”
She pulled out a data pad and stared at it a moment, a small frown of concentration on her faced, before saying, “Right now we just need to do some tests.”

***

Katherine looked about, trying to see in the darkness. She could barely make out figures moving around her. Faceless spectres who went in and out of sight. One darted forwards, blurring as it moved. Katherine caught sight of a club in it's hand which it swung into her side. Katherine staggered to one side with a moan. She barely had time to see a second figure approaching before she was hit in the legs, causing her to fall to the floor. “Please,” Katherine moaned, but the beating continued.

***

Katherine woke up with a start. Realising she was in bed she rolled over to tell Sandra about the dream, only to find herself alone. “Sandra?” Getting no response Katherine started to panic a little, “Sandra!” Even as she was panicking a part of her reminded her she was in the station and that Sandra wasn't there. Rolling onto her back Katherine tried to go back to sleep, knowing she wouldn't be able to. After lying still for a while she got up, meaning to go for a walk, when her com system began beeping. Answering it she couldn't help smiling with relief as she saw who it was, “Sandra, what are you doing up?”

“I was having trouble sleeping and I thought you might be the same. I was right, wasn't I? I didn't just wake you up?”

“Yes and no.”

“Sorry?”

“I mean yes you were right and no you didn't wake me up.”

“Oh that's good. Not that it's good you couldn't sleep but, well, you know what I mean.”

“Yes, I do. I'm glad you called, I've been missing you this last week.”

“Me too. These next couple of months are going to be hard.” Sandra was silent a moment before saying, “You know when you get back what say we go away together, just the two of us. I mean you'll be due some time off.”

“Sounds good.” Katherine smiled, “I take it you've already decided where.”

“I was thinking we could take a cruise in one of those new airships.”

“I like, very much.” Katherine's face fell a little as she said, “Good luck getting tickets though.”

“You let me worry about that. I guarantee that when you come back we will go away together on an air ship.”

“Okay then, I'll be looking forward to it.”

***

The next day the mission control was a hive of activity as the final pre launch checks were made. Hearing the doors open Dr Howard looked up from the main control desk and said, “Anne, I didn't think that you'd be here.”

Anne raised an eyebrow, “What you thought I'd miss this?”

“I guess after the amount of work you've put into the project it isn't surprising you're here. But are you sure you're fit enough.”

Anne nodded, “The doctors gave me a clean bill of health.”

“Well it's good to have you here.” He moved aside to let Anne take his place.

***

The crew of the MS Bad Wolf boarded the ship through the station's docking bay which was connected to the ship by a long tunnel. They could see the ship through the large windows that looked out into space. Looking out at it Damien, the pilot said, “She's quite a sight isn't she?”

Katherine turned to look then swallowed looking a little queasy, “I think that I'm going to be sick.”

“That's the spirit.” Damien clapped her on the back. After boarding the ship they went straight to the bridge.

When they had strapped themselves a voice over the intercom said, “Okay, everyone give me a go, no go for launch.”

Katherine stared at the readouts in front of her with a feeling of de ja vu. It was something about one of the blinking indicator lights.

***

Katherine was sitting in total darkness, save for a light which blinked on and off, shining in her eyes.

“Tell me about when you were first contacted by Earth Intelligence,” A voice said.

“I've never been in contact with Earth Intelligence,” Katherine responded, her words slurred.

“She's resisting,” The voice said, to someone else, “Increase the dosage.”

***
“Katherine,” The captain said, causing her to jump, “Are we go or no go for launch?”

“Sorry,” Katherine quickly went over the readings before saying, “We're go.”

“Hear that,” The captain said into the radio, “We're all go for launch.”

“Affirmative, countdown in t minus one minute.”

“If any of you get travel sick, now's the time to speak up,” The captain said.

The voice from the command centre counted down, “Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.”

The captain said, “Here goes nothing.” He hit the ignition for the navigation engines. The supports holding the ship in placed retracted as it slowly began to move away from the space station.

Good update. The pace is brisk and fun.

Katherine’s first dream sequence-- with the clubbing-- is very well written. Near-poetic description, lots of active sentences, and a giddy disorientation all the way through. Dream-like. Awesome.

I felt a bit of disappointment as Damien looked up through the gangway’s windows and saw the MS BW. I didn’t get to see it. He even has the nerve to quip “Beautiful, isn’t she?” or something like that... I wouldn’t know. Does it resemble a filing cabinet (ala Douglas Adams?) Or a bull elephant? Or an Alpha Romeo? Or a banana? Maybe you’ve covered the ship’s appearance in more detail earlier -- I can’t remember -- but this would be a great time to reiterate or relay another description of the vessel, since, someone in the story is looking at it, and commenting on it.

Maybe:

“She’s beautiful, isn’t she?” Damien asked. His walk weaved slightly as he gazed through the walkway’s windowed overhead.

Katherine looked up as well. Her breaths slowed. After so many months of intensive design and testing, such scrutiny of each system and detail, she had never regarded the ship as a whole.

It loomed above and around her field of view. Half of the cylindrical hull gleamed with sun, the rest blended into the surrounding black. The pair of solar wings that drew forward from the main hull glistened along their polymer skins and spindly stanchions, appearing far too delicate for the rigors of sub-light, let alone light-speed travel. They would work, though. They would be tough enough. Katherine knew it. Her calculations had proven it. She smiled, the beauty that Damien beheld was now clear to her as well.

Or something... I dunno. My example shows a cylindrical hull and a pair of solar sails skinned with a flimsy-appearing material-- Not the most vivid or accurate description ever delivered, but it does put certain (as in near-specific) images into the reader’s mind. They can deduce the rest of the craft’s appearance from that... And it only took two sentences. I’m far from an expert (especially where description’s concerned) so take my advice with a barrel of salt. I just felt a bit let down when a character sees something so stirring, and I don’t get to have a look as well.

The scene between Sandra and Anne is great-- The one where they’re alone together. Lots of wit and a touch of sadness. It made me feel sorry for Sandra and Anne both. It also made me wonder whether or not something could happen between them in Katherine’s absence. Not that they have to ‘go all-the-way’ or anything like that, but they could indulge in the less-guilty pursuits of constant-flirting and glancing, accidental touches whenever they go out to dinner together. I wouldn’t be mad at Sandra if she did enjoy a relatively harmless flirtatious jaunt with Anne during Katherine’s absence. From what I know of Sandra, she would never betray Katherine, but she’s also big-hearted enough to want to alleviate Anne’s loneliness, and perhaps -- understandably-- a little lonely herself. If the relationship between the two goes far beyond charming and flirting, then their actions become much more polarizing, both to readers, and to Katherine.

Polarizing readers... Sounds scary, huh? I hope it doesn’t. Your characters define themselves through their actions. If those actions skim a line but don’t cross it (yet constantly teeter on doing so) you will reward your readers with a very human situation between real people, and that suspense (how far will they go) can keep people hooked for hundreds of pages-- If handled right.

I think of the X-Files TV show. The romantic tension between Mulder and Scully; the writers kept that smoldering-- just beneath the surface of the character’s words and actions-- for years. It was done with great skill. Maddening and addictive all at once. Viewers kept wondering “Are they? Would they? Will they?” and were seldom let-down by numerous ambiguities and misleading story-threads. Skillful writing indeed.

You’ve chosen a good way to end the chapter. You’re writing middle-to-middle again. Bravo.

Now that the ship’s pulling away from Mars, there’s going to be a lot of time for other interesting developments down on the surface :)

As always Justin, great, thought-provoking work.

Cool. I wanted that sequence to be astract and dream like, so I'm glad ot worked out.

D'OH! :stink bad writer, no cookie

I spend a lot of the story building the thing then I don't let the readers see it. Will fix that ASAP :blush

The scene between Sandra and Anne is great-- The one where they’re alone together. Lots of wit and a touch of sadness. It made me feel sorry for Sandra and Anne both. It also made me wonder whether or not something could happen between them in Katherine’s absence.

You seem to really want Katherine and Sandra to flirt with infidelity. First it was Katherine and Ada, now Sandra and Anne ;) I'll just say I have plans for Anne which will hopefully tie together all the hints I've been dropping about her.

If those actions skim a line but don’t cross it (yet constantly teeter on doing so) you will reward your readers with a very human situation between real people, and that suspense (how far will they go) can keep people hooked for hundreds of pages-- If handled right.

This is true. IIt makes for a better story if characters are tempted to do something wrong but resist it, than if they're always perfect and are never tempted.

Now that the ship’s pulling away from Mars, there’s going to be a lot of time for other interesting developments down on the surface

Indeed. When I was planning the story I had intended for the last part to just be about the journey to AC. However when it came to writing it I realised that there was too much left unresolved on Mars to be able to do that.

As always, great, thought provoking feedback :)

Yikes, Has it really been that long?

Well there are updates, just not in any kind of shape to be posted.

I had printed out the next chapter, a couple of months ago intented to work on it, but I lost the printout and haven't looked at it since.

I will get back to working on it and try to have the next chapter ready by the weekend.

As to other projects, I've been mainly working on a couple of fan fic stories such as Times of darkness, times of light and one of the stories in WTTV: The Kitten show

Since you're here, I'll just take the chance to ask, what's the word on an update to Latency?

Glad to hear you've been busy with the fanfics. They're fun to write. I may do another someday.

As for Latency-- My time's been occupied by another project as of late. I’ve been grappling with the conception of MY kind of story, told MY way, yet still marketable. I know it’s possible, just arduous and fraught with seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

Publishers want to read manuscripts that are of good quality. They also want the good-quality work to generate revenue if published. The goodness of a ‘script isn’t a guarantee of sales-- It’s the sad reality that writers have to deal with.

I cannot, no matter how I apply myself, just blurt-out a Tom Clancy or Robert Ludlum or anything like that without feeling compelled to include the side-effects of my fractured mental state and skewed perception. But I also know that it IS possible to channel that, be clever with the presentation, and still manage to produce something that will at least *appear* marketable.

I enjoy telling stories. I enjoy it more if I can get a much bigger audience. Being published is the key to reaching more people. I write to be read, not to be published, but the latter is needed to best satisfy the former. Plus, I just may be able to make a somewhat decent living by writing. That’d be nice because I have lots to share, and little time to devote to its creation due to the need to pay the bills.

Latency isn’t on hiatus though. Claire and the rest are constantly interfering with my other works, always popping into my addled brain when I’m struggling with someone else’s plot or emotions in another universe. I’ve actually written quite a few scenes for Latency in the past month or so, but they aren’t ready for posting... They’ll need lots of fine-tuning lest they bore, mislead, or alienate the readers through shoddiness.

Though, looking at what I’ve just written here, I’m beginning to wonder if my intended-marketable work really ever could be. It’s hard to guess what people will respond to and what they’ll dismiss. My goal is to write things that people will want to read instead of expecting them to read my stuff and then get all bitter when they won’t.

Writing is hard.

I’m looking forward to more AC. Post it when you’re ready.

Re: Fic: The Race for Alpha Centauri

So maybe the weekend was a little optimistic.

Part Three

Chapter 16 – Who's got some cards?

“Earth is again demanding the right to send inspectors to Luna check claims that Mars has been placing weapons there. Earlier today the secretary of defence had this to say,

'Mars has never and will never place any weapons on Luna soil. This is nothing more than a transparent attempt by the Earth government to infringe on Luna's sovereignty as a nation state. Earth has been unhappy ever since Luna gained independence and will take any excuse to try to force Luna back under their control. We will be vigorously protesting these actions at the next tri council meeting.'”

***

The Anderson space station, and beyond that, the planet could be seen rapidly moving away in the main viewer. One of the readings on the screen showed the distance rising. Even at the rate of acceleration the ship was managing it was still almost an hour before they received confirmation that they were far enough away to be able to activate the main engines.

“Charging primary engines.” The captain said as he pressed a couple of buttons.

“Okay then we'll speak to you in a month. Good luck,” The flight controller said.

“That's assuming that we get there,” That captain muttered. “Right, make ship go now.” He hit the button to activate the primary engines. First the inertia displacement field activated. this made the ship effectively massless, which had the twin advantages of allowing it to achieve massive acceleration without crushing the crew and of letting it approach and pass the speed of light without dealing with relativistic affects. Then the primary engines fired, giving the ship an acceleration thousands times that of Earth's gravity.

On board the only sign that anything had happened was a moment of weightlessness when the displacement field first activated.

“Is that it? That was a little anti climatic.” Samantha said.

“Well I'm sorry it wasn't more exciting for you.” He glanced at the speed gauge and said, “We should be reaching our cruising speed of sixty times the speed of light in about a day or so.”

“I'm going to head down to the engine room.” Katherine said as she unstrapped herself. Leaving the bridge Katherine walked down a short passage then slid down a ladder. Going through another doorway she came to the engine room. It was a long narrow room that was lined with terminals and access panels. Walking down it she set each computer to do a different diagnostic routine. Katherine jumped as one of the access panels opened. Turning towards it she saw a pair of antenna come out. A moment later a small robot extended it's camera out in to the room, panning it round the room. “What do you want?” Katherine asked it. Instead of answering it went back into access panel closing the panel behind it. “Weird.” Katherine said. She used a terminal to find the robot and ran a diagnostic. She found that it's location routines had become confused so she took manual control of it and guided it back to it's base so that it could reset itself. Noting that some of the diagnostic tests had finished Katherine routed the results to her terminal so that she could check them for any abnormalities.

Anne had just gotten home when her door bell rang. Checking the camera she saw that it was Sandra so she hit the door open button. “Hi.” Sandra said as she held up a cat box, “I brought the fur ball back.” She bent down and opened the box up. Tabitha came out and gave Anne an angry look. She then stormed off, her tail high in the air.

“I guess she's unhappy with me.” Anne said, as she watched the cat go.

“I guess that cat's are picky like that.”

“Well I'm sure that she'll forgive me the next time she wants to be fed.” Anne started moving towards the kitchen. “Would you like a drink?”

Following her Sandra answered. “Tea would be great.”

“I was going to have to a glass of wine.”

“Okay then I'll join you.”

As Anne bent to get a bottle from her rack she asked, “You don't have any moral objections to drinking Earth wine do you?”

“No.” Sandra answered with a shrug. She knew that some people refused to have any dealings with Earth but she didn't really see the point of that, even with the ideological differences between Earth and Mars.

“That's good. We just don't seem to be able to grow decent grapes here on Mars. So did you watch the launch?” She opened the bottle and poured out two glasses, before resealing it.

“Yes. I saw it on one of the displays at the town centre. To be honest it was kind of dull.”

“Well boring launches are best since that means that nothing went wrong.”

“And I'm very glad about that.” She took a sip of her wine and said, “This is very nice.”

“Good. I was worried that it might be corked.”

“Is that a real cork?”

“No, they haven't made those for a few hundred years now.”

“Oh.”

“So how are you finding things at Paul and Karen's?”

“It's good. I mean I'm glad to not be staying on my own and they're both great people.”

“Yes they are. You know Karen and I were good friends till Paul had his breakdown.”

“Breakdown?”

“That's why he had to leave the Agency.”

“Oh, I'd heard...” Sandra stopped, not sure how to go on.

“That we'd had an affair? No we hadn't. If you listen to the gossip at the Agency then I've had affairs with most of the men and quite a few of the women working there.”

“Doesn't that bother you?” Sandra thought she'd hate to have the people at the college spreading rumours like that about her. In fact one of the things that Alec had done was go around telling people that she had slept with him. Fortunately he had made himself so unpopular with the other teachers by that time that none of them listened to him, but she found it upsetting all the same.

“Too be honest I prefer that to them discussing the truth.”

“Oh.” Sandra said wondering if she should ask what that was. She had know Anne for just over three years now and in all that time she hadn't known Anne to have had any boy or girl friends.

Samantha hadn't had a chance to talk to the captain before the launch so she went to see him afterwards. She found him along with about half of the other crew up in the mess hall. Some of them were playing cards while others were reading. It was quite a small room, with just a couple of tables and a serving unit and even without everyone here it was starting to get a bit cramped. “So is this what we're going to be doing for the whole trip?”

The captain looked up from the game to say, “Well with everything being automated there isn't a lot to do until we reach Alpha Centauri, unless there's a problem.”

Samantha looked around again. She worked out that the astronomers, navigator and Katherine weren't there. “Where's Katherine?”

“Oh she hid herself away in the engine room just after the launch. I guess she's the only one who'll really be busy.”

“Oh.” Samantha turned to the captain and said, “Captain I wonder if I could have a word with you.”

The captain put his cards down and said, “Of course. If there is anything we can do to make your trip more comfortable then don't hesitate to ask.”

Samantha decided to ignore the sarcasm and said, “Well I want to help. Surely there's something I can do round the ship?”

“Didn't you hear what Dave just said? Apart from Katherine none of us have anything to do.” He picked up his cards seemed to dismiss Samantha.

After leaving the mess hall Samantha went straight to the engine room looking for Katherine. Not finding her there she then went to Katherine's room and hit the door buzzer. She waited a minute then pressed it again. ”One moment.” The response came. A moment later the door opened to reveal Katherine. Samantha noted that she looked a little flustered.

“Sorry, were you sleeping?”

“No. I was just, uh, thinking about Sandra.” Katherine lifted her hand to brush a loose hair behind her ear, “Do you want to come in?”

“Thanks.”

“So what can I do for you?”

“Oh well I went to the captain to ask if there was anything that I could do but he didn't seem to think that there was.”

“Sorry. To be honest, he does seem to be a bit of a jerk.”

“Yes, well I was wondering if I could help out in engineering.”

Katherine shrugged, “Sure, an extra pair of hands would be useful.” For some reason Katherine suddenly started blushing and stammered out, “Um, well I mean, um, sure I could use the help.”

Samantha stared at Katherine a moment wondering if she should ask what was up. Finally she decided to just say, “Thanks. I really would like to be useful on this trip.”

“Well I'll make sure that I keep you busy.”

“Again thanks.” Samantha hesitated a moment then said, “You know if you ever got tired of Mars you'd be sure to get a good job with my dad's company. The pays pretty good and so is the benefits package.”

“Thanks for the offer but I like living on Mars.”

“I understand. Oh well, I just thought that I'd offer. Well I'll leave you to your... Thinking.”

When Samantha had gone Katherine turned back into the room. She stopped as she spotted a blue briefcase on a chair where one of her flight bags had been. She was sure it wasn't hers and yet it seemed familiar somehow. Katherine walked slowly up to it, “Has someone been in my room. Maybe someone's playing a joke on me.” She carefully pulled the catches. Expecting something to spring out at her, she turned her face as the lid flipped open. When nothing did Katherine looked inside. It was full of money. Earth money.

Katherine took a step back muttering, “What's going on?”

Then the briefcase was gone, replaced by her flight bag. Katherine walked up to it and checked inside, finding just some clothes. Walking over to the mirror and staring at her face Katherine said to herself, “Brain I could really do without having a nervous breakdown at the moment. Actually for the next couple of months, if that's okay with you.”

That night Sandra went out with the Philips' to a small local restaurant. It was quite a small place with a friendly atmosphere and colourful decoration. There was soft music playing in the background. “We've been a few times now.” Paul said, “And the food has always very good.”

Karen leant over and said, “They do a very nice crème brules.”

“Well then I'll be sure to try it then,” Sandra said.

“Also the chicken is very good,” Paul said.

Finding it in the menu Sandra said, “Well that's the main course and dessert sorted out. What do you recommend for my starter?”

“We don't mean to dictate your choices for you.” Karen said. “You choose whatever you want.”

“Have the prawns,” Alex said.

Sandra snapped the menu shut, “Well coming out with you has certainly made this a lot easier. Normally when it's just Katherine and me, we spend ages trying to work out what to have.”

“That must please the waiters.” Karen said, in a dry tone.

“Oh yeah it does.” Turning to Paul she said, “So are you going into retirement again now that the ships finished?”

“Not quite yet. I'm helping set up the tachyon communication system. After that I think I'll start working for the Agency again, on a part time basis.”

“Oh, right. I thought that you just worked on engines.”

“That's my main area of expertise but I do other work.”

“Oh well it sounds good. Though why only part time?”

“Well I want to keep working at the tech museum as well.”

At this point the waiter arrived and they ordered their meals. “So you work at the museum? I didn't know.”

“Yes, I'm a do some engineering work there.. I've been on a sabbatical while working on the project. What did you think I was just staying at home for the last ten years?”

“Uh to be honest I never thought about it.” Sandra looked round the room then said, “This place is pretty quiet.”

“Well it fills up a bit more later in the evening, which is why we wanted to come early.”

Sandra nodded. “Yeah crowded restaurants are never fun.”

As they left Sandra said, “That was really nice. I' ll have to bring Katherine there when she gets back.”

Karen took Sandra by the arm. “The crème brule was heavenly wasn't it?”

“Yes, I have to admit it was one of the best I've ever had. Though it was only the second so that isn't saying much.”

Karen look horrified. “Oh you poor dear. You've been deprived.”

“Yes I have but I live with it somehow.”

“Okay so if this is the engine room, where are the engines?” Samantha asked, not looking impressed with the room that she would be working in.

“Well this is just where we control them. The actual engines are further back. Though with all the radiation they give off would make working with them would be rather lethal.”

“But what if we want to do repairs?”

“We use robots for any maintenance work. Though we do have access to some of the systems through these access points. Mainly though the ship repairs itself, we just oversee everything to make sure nothing goes wrong.”

“So what do you want me to do?”

“Too be honest there isn't much to do. Mainly it's just a matter of running diagnostics and checking for anything unusual. Not very exciting, but necessary.”

“How do you define unusual? Given the fact this is the first ship to travel this fast.”

“Uh good question.” Katherine considered it a moment. “Just tell me if you think that something looks wrong.”

“Okay. I think that I can handle that.” She switched on a terminal and started going through the options. She stopped when she noticed that Katherine was standing by one of the access points looking as if she was waiting for something. “Is something wrong?”

Suddenly the access point opened up and a robot stuck it's camera out. Katherine quickly reached out and grabbed it, “Gotcha.” The robot tried to get out of her grip a moment but Katherine managed to switch it off.

“What is going on?” Samantha asked.

“This robot keeps getting lost. It's been coming in hear several times every day. I just want to see what's going wrong.”

“What if you can't fix it?”

“I'll switch it off. We've got plenty more to use.” Katherine took it over to a terminal and started plugging cables into the robot.

When Mr Malevich returned to Luna he left his assistant Ada to keep an eye on what was happening. While they wouldn't hear anything from the Bad Wolf for a month, he said he'd still feel happier having someone there. Ada had just got back to her apartment when door bell rang. Glancing at the monitor she muttered, “What the hell does she want?”

Anne was just finishing up some work when her computer told her that she'd received a message. Opening she found that it was from Richard. It was asking her to meet him to discuss the possibility of a saboteur on the ship. Feeling distrustful she decided to try to call Richard but he was out of his office. She ran some checks on the message and found that all the correct signatures were there and confirmed the sender. Switching her systems off Anne left her office and went to catch the next shuttle to the meeting place.

Leaving Samantha monitoring the diagnostics Katherine decided to do a quick check of the supplies. She had just starting going over some of the stores of equipment when her com unit sounded.

“Katherine?” Samantha asked.

“Samantha. Is something wrong?”

“No, it's just you've been gone a while.”

“I have?” Katherine glanced at her watch and realised she'd been gone an hour. “Sorry I guess I dozed off.” Getting up she started out. As she she leaving she noticed that the locker holding the environment suits was unlocked, Opening it she quickly counted the suits and made sure that none were missing. After seeing they were all there she closed the door and locked it.
