Oh good. I thought we might not be seeing her for an episode or two.

I'm hoping that just because Jack is 'making an appearance in the finale' it doesn't rule him out of being in several episodes before, and it's just the BBC trying to fool us!!!

I hadn't even considered that. Let's hope so.

He may end up switching back and forth, the way Tom Baker used to switch between his original dark maroon jacket and the gray tweed jacket with the elbow patches.

And I forget how many different colors they made of Jon Pertwee's smoking jacket and frilled shirt combination.

Some photoshopped pictures of him in a variety of different colours have been posted on the OG forum, and I remember the same thing happening when his costume was first revealed last year, including one in the 6th Doctor colours. He actually looked pretty good, but this is David Tennant we're talking about. He'd look good in an old sack.

Hi, all. I must admit that I'm not as big a Who fan as most other Kittens (I really haven't gotten into it as hardcore as I have some other sci-fi franchises until recently), but I've started to watch the new series (CBC is showing Series 1 repeats at Wendsday morning.)

I've seen the odd ep before ("Dalek" and "Parting of the Ways", though I missed seeing the regeneration scene), and can't wait for Series 2 to be shown over here.

It's always good to welcome another fan to the fold :)

I'm in the UK and I've been watching DW since @ 1975 with Tom Baker and Lis Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith. I am a bit crazy about it thought, so much more than I ever was with BtVS.

Let us know what you think about the other episodes :)

Picked up "The Curse of Fenric" the other day and watched last night. DVDs are the only way to watch Who now in my opinion! Of course buy the entire collect might run me somewhere north of $2000.00.

Man I miss the Seventh Doctor. But I am finding out the things I really liked about him seem to be there in abundance in the Tenth Doctor.

Can't wait till Season 3. Until then, I have a few more DVDs to go through.

No problem. "The Empty Child" is on tonight. Is it any good?

Oh, and even though Series 2 isn't here till the Fall, I've found some clips of it on YouTube. And from what I've seen, I can't wait for it to get shown over here.

And I missed "The Christmas Invasion." Bah.

Speaking of vids I found on YouTube, check this out.

Oh yes. Very. It's the first half of a two-parter that could very well pick up a Hugo Award later this month.

It's also the episode that introduces Captain Jack.

The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances is the best of the new series I think, with Steven Moffat writing, Captain Jack, some wonderful special effects and the best ending of any Doctor Who story ever.

You guys were right. "The Empty Child" was a great episode, albiet one that feels like I've missed a lot. (Understandable, since I am coming into it late.)

The banter between Rose and the Doctor was funny, especially the situation about "Mauve vs. Red Alert" at the start and when Jack calls the Doctor "Mr. Spock." (I'm assuming this isn't the first time Rose has made a "Star Trek" joke about him?)

There was one quote that I thought was the funniest in the episode, but the fact that I watched it at midnight has made me forget what it was. It was when the Doctor was commenting on the fact that the phone on the TARDIS isn't supposed to work. Can anyone help me recall what it was?

Anyways, can't wait to see the conclusion next week.

Could it be: "I want to know how a phone that isn't a phone gets a phone call."

I liked: "I wanna find a blonde in a Union Jack. I mean a specific one. I didn't just wake up this morning with a craving."

Yeah, that was it. God, I wanted to laugh so hard at that, but it was damn near 12:30am when it happened, and the rest of the family was asleep.

Watched "The Doctor Dances" last night (though I missed the first ten minutes as I fell asleep). Yet another laugh out loud riot, especially the convo between Captain Jack and the Doctor as they get cornered by the zombies.

Captain Jack: Okay! This can function as a sonic blaster, a sonic cannon, and a circle-and-hold sonic disruptor. Doc, what've you got?
The Doctor: I've got a sonic...uh... oh, never mind.
Captain Jack: What?
The Doctor: It's sonic, okay, let's leave it at that.
Captain Jack: Disruptor, cannon, what?
The Doctor: It's sonic! Totally sonic! I'm soniced up!
Captain Jack: A SONIC WHAT?
The Doctor: Screwdriver!

Also laughed at the "bananas" quote:

The Doctor: Go! Now! Don't drop the banana!
Capt. Jack Harkness: Why not?!
The Doctor: Good source of potassium!

I also picked up some "Doctor Who" novels from the library.

I don't know. I know that CBC starts showing Series 2 on October 9th (or whenever the hell Canadian Thanksgiving is this year), so I'm not sure they'll be reshowing Series 1.

Of coruse, I could go pick up the DVD set...if it wasn't damn near 100 bucks...

This is from an interview with Russell T Davies in September's Doctor Who Magazine.

"We'll see what happens with Billie gone, but the nice thing is that we don't stop talking about Rose; already, in Episodes 1 and 2, there's a mention of Rose every episode - well-placed resonant mentions - which keeps it emotionally true. I think you need that."

Wow, realising that the Doctor as well as the audience is going to miss Rose and dealing with it on the show. Who does he think he is? Certainly not JW that's for sure.

"The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances" won the Hugo Award tonight for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form. Steven Moffat's acceptance speech was absolutely fantastic, even if he wasn't there to deliver it in person. I'll post a video once I can get home tomorrow.

Yup, they got the sweep. And the funny thing is that none of them were expecting to win. According to Paul, they're all a bunch of Battlestar Galactica fans, and the Galactica episode that was nominated was their favorite of the season. They were convinced it was going to win instead. When he got the news, Russell T. Davies sent Paul an "expletive-laden text message," as in "You bleeping mean we bleeping really bleeping won?" :lol

Paul literally couldn't stay in his chair during his Doctor Who panel on Sunday. He was still bouncing around excitedly. There was some amusing discussion about how he was going to get the trophy home - it's shaped like an old-fashioned rocket ship from the days of the 30s and 40s pulp sci-fi magazines, which means it also looks very much like a bomb. Even in the days before 9/11, some people supposedly had trouble with airport security over them. :p

In Boomtown the Doctor is forced to face a dilemma he's always managed to avoid in the past. It's a very talky episode with almost no action, but also filled with humour. Some fans hated it, but I liked it, and it has Jack and the Doctor flirting which is always good. :-D

YouTube is finally cooperating for me, so here's my video of Doctor Who winning at the Hugos:

And in case you're interested, here's another clip from Worldcon - Robert Picardo singing a silly Trek song. Apparently he's done a couple of CDs that are being sold to benefit the Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

I really like Boomtown too, and it's a good chance to take a breath before the last two episodes.

Bob, do you think any of this season's episodes could be in the running for next year's Hugos? I don't really know the kind of things that might be picked, but I'd go for:
  • The Impossible Planet / The Satan Pit
  • The Girl in the Fireplace (it would be cool if Steven Moffat won two years running!)
  • Love & Monsters (for a more unusual one)

Is it okay for me to post a link on OG to your YouTube ?

Go right ahead. I emailed Shaun Lyon to see if he wanted to link to it on the OG main site, but I haven't heard back from him. Not surprising, considering he's probably very busy and still tired from Worldcon.

As for what could get a Hugo nomination next year, I'd say the ones you mentioned are all definite contenders, as is the Army of Ghosts/Doomsday combination and also School Reunion - the latter because of (a) Sarah Jane fans, (b) ASH fans and (c) it's a really good episode. Tooth and Claw has an outside chance, too.

Who knows? Maybe Doctor Who will sweep the nominations. The original Star Trek is the only show that's ever done that before.

I thought of AoG/D too, but as it refers back such a lot to earlier episodes I wasn't sure if it would make such an impression on people who haven't seen the series.
