Dibs?

I loved seeing Willow begin to transition from feeling sorry for herself to understanding how much this affects the people around her. Great comparison of the dinner table to a bad school lunchroom experience. Nice way of pointing out what a weird situation they're all in. The description of Willow's assessment of canon-Willow and Tara's bedroom was nice - she's seeing glimpses of their relationship that I imagine will cause her to think about her own life.

Update!!!!

Awww

I just feel so sorry for Willow, she's with all these people who she doesn't really know, it must be really confusing and upsetting. At least Xander is showing signs of what a great guy he can be.

Thumbs up to the Xan-man.

Sigh I try I really do but I have always disliked Giles and this fic is no exception - he clearly thinks that this is all Willows doing (which I'll have to stay tuned to find out as chances are he's right) but there could be another reason?!?! :pray :pray

Awwwwwwww!! Poor Tara. Really.
At least Willow is coming to notice her feelings too and the other's scoobies.

Love the fic. Is so tender at moments that I can feel the characters' hearts tightening through the screen

Keep it up, please. You're doing a wonderful job.
Update soon
Take care

Well, I'm kinda glad that Dawn has the smarts not to accuse Willow to her face that she might have done this to herself. And it's not to say that I don't like Dawn, but sometimes the writers just couldn't write her in a way that didn't make her come off as whiny (I mean, I really felt for her in some episodes, but sometimes she was just too bratty for my tastes.)

I like the idea of showing that it's not just Tara who is affected by the other Willow's disappearance. I mean, the other Willow was important to each one of them, and it helps to reinforce that.

Keep going Sally. And know that I'm enjoying it. :)

I love this fic !! and can't wait for the next installment!
I trust that Willow's only registering 1/100th of Tara's pain since obviously the Valium is still in effect right?

I too am worrying about Tara's Willow! Was it really her reckless acts that made her disappear? or is it all due to the other Willow's head injury?

Anyway please don't keep us waiting too long!!

sally pants.

Another brilliant update...

I know you said that this tale was from Willow's pov... but I really get a sense of Tara's sadness & worry from your words. I also get this sense of her trying to keep all of that from this alterna-dimensional Willow ( I like that. alterna-dimensional. heh.),as if to protect her from any more distress. It is considerate of Tara and touching, and kind of sad to think about. I can't imagine the state of mind it would take to loan out her missing girlfriends clothes... I can only think that it is going to really hurt for her to see alterna-dimensional Willow in her Willow's clothes...

... and how empty is their bed going to feel tonight ? :aww

Plus there is Xander... I guess I think that once alterna-dimensional willow is rested, she is really going to want to spend some time with him. A side note: I wonder if that Xander crush thing ever existed in her dimension or if it was resolved.... at any rate his death really defined this Willow's world, and I think it will mean a great deal to her to see/interact/spend time with her old friend.

I am really *really* enjoying this story.

Thank you!

Yay, update! I've been looking forward to one :pray hehe. It must be so awkward for Tara (and new Willow)... I like their interaction here though... how Willow is, I think, still a bit too overwhelmed to express her feelings about this.

I'm wondering if they'll have a talk about how things are in both their dimensions :) Big question remains, what happened! But that can wait, lol, there's so much interesting stuff going on :D

And again, great characters; I'm really liking this Buffy. She's so... Buffy lol! :) So anyway yeay, great update... you write so well. Thanks a lot! :applause

Sally,
Yes, I think you would like the saga of Rose Tyler i.e, the two new series of "Doctor Who" as it is written from the point of view of this ordinary human girl so the audience feels what she does as she travels in time and space with this 900 year old alien guy.
But I digress...
Now that all the chess pieces, alternate Sunnydale style, have adjusted to the Willow variant on their home territory, they are staritng to process the information and run all the possible scenarios in ways that we have seen them do dozens of times before.
None of those time, however, was there so much personal baggage endowing the proceddings with such a sense of urgency; all of the group stumped and stymied by the random displacement to an unknown location of their Willow.
I particularly felt a sense of kinship with Willow's outsider feeling and her point of reference when entering the kitchen for dinner being the junior high lunchroom.
Now if Michael Crichton could provide succinct and understandable scientific explanations that naturally flowed as if in casual conversation, I might actually respect him as a novelist.
Your reasoning that every alternate Earth has its own particular energy signature is the way the Doctor despatched his enemies the Cybermen back to the alternate Earth from whence they came.
Your story leads to a fascinating wrinkle to my theory that the universe will always adapt, shift, and change to allow Willow and Tara to make contact and complete their union.
What if Tara already has a Willow? How far will she go to be her caring, sweet, compassionate self and yet not be able to resist all of the similar Willowy qualities this this other one possesses?

"Huh? Oh, no - I just don't eat pork."

From her own mouth, this alternate Willow isn't large with the meat.
Or is that only in reference to her Judaic upbringing?
I can deny chicks in chainmail nothing.

SallyMcFine: Great update, again I felt really bad for Willow after everything that has happened to her today, but I felt really, really bad for Tara having to continue to put on a brave face, I can't even begin to imagine what shes going through. I really liked Xander going up to the other Willow and offering to catch up with her, that was really nice and thoughtful. That whole clothes thing was a little weird, I mean its her clothes but its not, just weird. I really hope that the Scoobies find out how to switch the Willows back. I can't wait to read more.

Oh no! The suspense is *hurting* me. I'm glad everyone but me seems to have at least a guess about what is happening and where this is going, but I have no clue. However, I LOVE IT. The story, not the agony of not knowing. (Cause I'm not *that* masochistic. ;-) ) I await the next update with impatience and delight. Poor Willow. Poor Tara! I hate to even think about what she's going through. Absolutely wonderful update m'dear.

You know, the amount of pain and hesitation on Tara's part is coming off her in droves, poor thing. She wants to do the right thing by Willow, both of them, but kudos to Willow for finally noticing it and being a little guilty. I don't get the sense that she's envious or anything about the other Willow's relationship. I suppose she knows she doesn't belong there and it's no use yearning for something that isn't hers. Now, whether she gets any idea to seek out her Tara when/if she goes home, that's another matter. And I'm guessing you'll explore those thoughts in due course.

"The other wrinkle," Giles added, "is that from what we gleaned from this Willow, magic doesn't exist in her dimension. Or at least, it doesn't function nearly as strongly in her world as in ours. If it did, I have no doubt that our Willow would already be home - she's proficient enough with magic - and reckless enough - to perform a dimension-traveling spell on her own."

grrrrr again with the "hey!" to Giles. Then again may be I'm not being fair, Willow is reckless and arrogant. But I don't really like Giles saying this about her behind her back. Though judging by the implied agreement by the others (notably Tara) I'm thinking the missing Willow has had a mishap or two in the magic department.

So, what next? Knowing Sunnydale, something must happen next. We've had pizza and awkward underwear situation, I'm looking forward to the pandemonium.

Sally – Again a wonderful update. At first this one struck me as being interludy (to quote my word from the last comments). But then I thought about it more and I feel like this is (potentially) a real turning point. I see a few things about Willow’s behavior and thought patterns that seem to be a vast departure from the updates before. And now to tease, I’m going to be some what methodical about this and leave what I’m saying for a minute. (What? Debra’s going to be methodical? What are the odds on that? I mean methodical? Who would have thought?)

My first observation about this update is how incredibly normal this dinner seems to be. Yes, they’re discussing dimensional travel and vampires and demons, but nothing absurd happens. Giles is in the kitchen when X/A arrive and no one tries to bomb the house while they are cutting the pizza or anything.

Giles explanation of dimensional travel (or least the potential pitfalls of return trips without complete itineraries) is wonderful. I was shocked to not have at least one “I’m too dumb to understand it” type comment from either Xander or Buffy in response. I also wondered who said this:
"Right, and don't let the door hit you on your undead ass on the way out. So why can't we do that again?"

Points for the use of the word willy-nilly!

she's proficient enough with magic - and reckless enough - to perform a dimension-traveling spell on her own."
Gee, Giles let’s call a spade a spade. (Where did that phrase come from? Is it racist? I hope not.). I’m somewhat surprised that no one is disagreeing with Giles on the harshness of his statement to defend Willow. That really says something about her judgment lately.

One thing I love here is that no one seems to be feeling any sort of “let’s replace our Willow with the other.” No one is feeling like it’s not so bad because at least we’ve got this alternate version or anything. They’re all very aware that Tara’s relationship is with the missing Willow and that this Willow is a virtual stranger. In fact, she is to all of them. They’re being kind and taking care of her but she’s not their friend. She’s a stranger who happens to know versions of people like (some of) them.

It was Buffy, silhouetted in the soft light from the hallway as she slowly opened the door.
I feel like this is a fantastic line. I don’t know if it’s intentional but the use of all the ls and ss ( I have no idea how to write that) make the line really show the way Willow is gliding out of sleep. It’s a very sensual depiction.

Adding to the surreal atmosphere was the knowledge that everyone in the room knew her - or someone who looked like her.
Now here I see quite a contrast. On one hand, I commented that the others seem very conscious of the difference between their Willow and this visitor, it seems that she’s starting to slide into confusion over it. It happens again later with her thoughts about the underwear too.

Growing up in the Rosenberg household, some things had just been the way they were, and not eating pork was one of the things from her upbringing that had stuck with her.
I can totally understand that. I didn’t eat pork or shellfish as a child and didn’t eat pork even when I used to eat meat. It just tastes very strange to me. I won’t even eat the meatless pork products although my wife and son do.

For the first time since she had been brought to this dimension, Willow began to realize that more people that just her were affected by what had happened. Buffy, Xander, Giles, Dawn, Anya - they had lost a friend. And Tara - Tara had lost someone she clearly cared about deeply. Willow could sense her distress, and wondered why she hadn't picked up on it before. Although, she admitted to herself, she hadn't necessarily been in any space to notice anyone's distress but her own.
The first of the two major turning points in this update. Understand, I’m not saying that Willow shouldn’t have been self-involved to this point. After all, she has a head injury and has been suddenly transferred to a parallel dimension with vampires and a gay other self. So yes, that’s strange. But this seems to be the first time (as you say) that she has started to really consider the effect of her appearance and (perhaps more importantly) the disappearance of the other Willow on these people. To greatly oversimplify she’s exhibiting empathy. To me it’s the point at which she can start to learn and grow as a human being. I have said that I don’t know where you’re going here or how you will resolve this but this is an excellent first step in whatever path this takes.

"Listen, Willow - I know that today's been pretty crazy and all, and Anya and I have to go patrol with Buffy. But tomorrow maybe we can take some time together to catch up. This all must be pretty overwhelming for you."
I think this is a pretty nice and decent thing for Xander to suggest. I mean for Xander, he’s not really missing a Willow. He loves Willow (his Willow) but he’s just offering something nice to this one to let her know him—a friend and a trusted person from her life.

It was clearly a well lived-in place, and just from standing in the doorway Willow could tell that it was intended to be a haven for two people who were very much in love. She felt her heart throb in sympathy at the absence of the other person as she watched Tara move about the room.
And here we have the second significant event of this update IMHO. Or maybe it’s significant event #1, part 2. Related to her developing empathy, she is starting to understand about Tara and her counterpart truly loving each other. Perhaps until this point in her life, she’s never thought much about gay relationships or maybe she hasn’t really known anyone in loving relationships at all. Either way, she’s starting to develop a true understanding of the relationship between her counterpart and Tara and of the pain that Tara is experiencing.

Well, I’ve written and written and hope my comments have made sense. Great job and I hope when you get it all done you’ll start to post faster because I still can’t stand the thought of it taking 3-4 more months to see how this all resolves.

I'll second that!

Hiya Sally, wonderful update. I'm feeling particularly ineloquent (hmmm...is that even a word?), so I'll pass on any remotely insightful feedback this time around. Suffice to say that I grow more fond of this tale with every update and I look forward to the answers to all the questions tumbling in my head:

Where is the "right" Willow? How did the "wrong" Willow get here? Will Tara find her Willow? Is there a big bad afoot or is this mix-up the fallout from a Willow-spell gone horribly wrong? If, indeed, Willow caused the switch with a spell, what was she trying to avoid or reverse or run away from?

I told you there were a bunch of questions running amuck in my addled brain

Keep up the great work!

Of all the scoobs Tara is most affected by the Willow switch. At the moment I'm unclear how attached the scoobs are to the otherWillow. They'll want to resolve the problem to get otherWillow back for Tara of course, but otherwise.. I dunno... (this is me thinking evil thoughts about certain s6 scoobies, can you tell?? -- sliding of soapbox now)

Giles comment about otherWillow being reckless is correct if you compare to his standards. That Willow doesn't mind taking some risks if she decides it's worth it. Besides, IF otherWillow were indeed trapped in a dimension without help how is she supposed to get out otherwise? Tara was probably to tired to respond to his comment, what would have been the point anyway?

Anyway, this Willow must feel pretty helpless. Which is frustrating if you see or feel you're indirectly hurting Tara. There's not much she can do to help, comforting Tara would be strange. Poor Tara, poor Willows :cry. Willow's head must be spinning with all the new information she has to process. It's not everyday you hear stories about vampires :)

Hm... I just realised there do not appear to be many people left in Willow's dimension who will miss her? Buffy most likely will worry, but other than that? Is this Willow closer with her parents than otherWillow? (that's fairly easy to accomplish btw.:)). Ah.. this feeling is probably caused by us only seeing one dimension in this story.. so we don't know if people in the more-normal-dimension worry.

Xander is being a good friend to someone he doesn't really know that well. He's a good guy that way, something we didn't see enough of since he met Anya, heh (certainly not in s6).

Sally, my friend! New fic! Umm...2 1/2 months still counts as 'new,' right? Heh heh. Have I seriously not left you fb yet? I guess I've been too busy playing backgammon with Willow. Oh yeah, Willow's here. She was really pissed at how neurotic you made her in Candle, so she decided to hide from your new fic. She's none too pleased you just wrote in another one, btw.

So, Willow goes to another dimension, huh? That seems really unlikely, dude. *looks at Debra* Umm. *looks at Cyd* Errr. *looks in mirror* Wow, I look fabulous.

Seriously, this rawks. I have no clue what's going to happen! Whoopee! What's the other Willow up to all this time? Are you going to show us at some point? If there's no magic and mystical whatsits and demony doohickeys and vociferous vampires and she starts spouting off, I'm thinking that's gonna put the 'dementia' in dimension, if you know what I'm saying. Willow in a lovely white fitted jacket.

Really wonderful pacing and excellent characterizations. These are Scoobies I would have continued to watch. Thanks for bringing them back.

Hey Stranger . . .

So imagine my surprise, logging back in one day and seeing a new fic from Sally of the McFine! I love the premise of your new story! You've always had a way with words and dialogue that make me want to give up writing (She's Got a What again?!), and it's pretty obvious by the way you're weaving your new tale.

I like the delicate way you're treating Willow's reaction to her new surroundings. And seeing a very much alive Xander! *Sniff* Guess my question is when are we going to find out the fate of Willow #2? Will we get to see something from her perspective? In any event, I love what you've done so far, and I can't wait until the next update.

Grayson

The speed of your dibs is exceeded only by the depth of your charm and good looks, my dear Grayson. Thanks for noticing how Willow is starting to come out of her funk. In writing this story in order to try to capture the reactions of people I sometimes try to picture what life would be like for an analogue of Mrs. McFine if she were plopped into my world with no knowledge about our current relationship.

And yes, I think Willow is in for some serious thinking about her own life, as you say, from what she observes in this universe. Thanks for reading and for dibs-ing! ;)
bluebird

Aw, I feel sorry for Willow too. Xander can indeed be a stand-up guy when he has the wherewithal.

I'm glad to hear you say that you've always disliked Giles and this fic is no exception, because while I have always liked him, I'm trying to write him as close to canon as I can. And he's blaming Willow here because - well, remember in canon when he came back from England because they had brought Buffy back to life with a resurrection spell? Remember how he got really mad at Willow and called her a "rank, arrogant amateur" and told her she was reckless? That's why.

I think that there are probably multiple reasons why this happened, and they'll all be revealed bit by bit. Thanks for reading!
viximon

Yeah, poor Tara is in for a rough few days, I'm guessing. And Willow's coming out of her shell a little bit which will probably be equally gratifying and hard for Tara. Thank you so much for reading and for your complimentary words. I appreciate it.
SithLordWiccan

Yeah, I think that on the show Dawn was quite the teenager in terms of being more whiny than the Scoobs were during their teenage years. I think she acted out in a lot of ways.
It's definitely not just Tara who is affected - while she's probably suffering the most, they all love Willow and are worried about her.
Thanks Sith!
arwen276

Thanks Arwen! I'm so glad you like this fic. And yeah, Tara's subdued right now and this Willow isn't very attuned to her moods anyway so she must be in a lot of anguish for Willow to notice. Well, we'll see whether it was Willow's magic use or the other Willow's head injury that caused this. Stay tuned - I update every other week on Tuesday, normally. Thanks for reading!
db

Pants! Yeah, while the story is from Willow's POV I think it's important to show the other characters' emotions since they're missing an important member of their gang. And I think that Tara is probably trying to protect this Willow - it's probably instinct for her since she looks like her Willow. Of course, there's the selfish reason that they need this Willow to stick around to match her up with the dimension that their Willow is in.
Yes, definitely - I would think that if you lost a best friend the opportunity to see him or her again would be beyond words. I am thinking that the crush thing either didn't really happen in her dimension or that it had only begun to rear its head, not enough to shape her life at all yet.
Thank you so much for reading and for your comments!
sadie

sadie, I'm glad you've been looking forward to the update. I always look forward to posting them. Yes, I think that awkward is probably the watchword here. And Willow is definitely overwhelmed.

I suspect they'll talk a little bit, at least. And Buffy, yeah - she's totally Buffy. :D Thank you so much and thanks for reading!
taralicious

I wonder how all the Scoobies would have reacted if there had been an episode where someone went missing. I mean, people were out and sometimes missing for brief periods of time, but not to my knowledge having been snatched in a dimensional switch type of thing, if memory serves.

Really, the energy signature thing was a Doctor Who thing to? I guess electron spin is a natural way to describe parallel universes, since they relate to quantum theory as well. And I think that on the kittenboard, at least, the universe will always make room for Willow and Tara.

Willow was saying that she doesn't eat pork - which, although she didn't say, I will tell you is a result of her Judaic upbringing. I could never tell if canon Willow ate pork or not. But this Willow eats beef and poultry and stuff. Thanks for reading, Blayne!
Lonewolf22

Yeah, I think the clothes thing would be really weird. Imagine - it's hard to imagine, isn't it? The real insult would be if your other worlds counterpart's clothes didn't fit you because she was a marathon runner or something, but I digress. Yeah, Tara's in pain and Xander's being a nice guy. I hope they find out how to switch her back soon too!
Barlimo

Barlimo - I guarantee a happy ending - this is the kittenboard, after all. Thank you so much for your nice comments! I appreciate your reading and letting me know you're enjoying it - thank you!
highlandlass25

Well, I don't want the suspense to actually hurt you! :) It's totally okay not to have a clue about where this is going. As everyone else's speculation has shown, there are many possibilities. The next update is currently scheduled for, hmmm, the day after Labor Day in the USA, which is September 5, by my calendar. Soon! Thanks so much!
watty

I'm glad you think the pain and hesitation is coming off of Tara in droves! One of my worries in writing this from Willow's POV and not being in other people's heads is that they might seem like cold fish or that they don't really miss their Willow, and they do. I'd say that this Willow is pretty early in her cycle of understanding about Willow and Tara's relationship, and any other feelings about Tara, so she may not be envious...yet. We shall see!

I understand about wanting to yell "Hey!" to Giles. I'm taking his comments from canon, though - in S6 when he comes back and they tell him that they resurrected Buffy with a spell, he went OFF on Willow, remember? And called her a "rank, arrogant amateur"? I think he even called her reckless, if I recall. And I also remember that in S5 she and Tara had wee little spats about her magic use. My interpretation of between the lines in canon is that at one point or another Giles may have gone to Tara to say "I think Willow is using too much magic" and Tara probably weakly defended her. But with this happening, no one really knows what to think.

Eventually things will happen - but since this story is taking place day by day, while the episodes on TV often skipped a few days or weeks, I'm anticipating some pandemonium but also some periods of semi-normal life. That's probably vague but anyway. Thanks watty!

Okay Debra, you officially win the prize for longest feedback EVER. Wow. This is longer than some of my updates! :)

I'm not surprised that this update seems interludy. That's something that I've been...what's the word here. Not exactly struggling with, but aware of as I'm writing. The story in the beginning was action - lots of things happened. Then the last few chapters have been more geared towards conversation and figuring things out. The action will pick up again in the last, oh, third of the story but we're in a conversational period right now; it just seems to be the way the story wanted to be written.

Yeah - I think that this chapter and some others will seem to be a little bit normal. It's my hypothesis that in canon while watching a TV show we saw all the exciting bits, but did not see the normal, boring stuff except in stylized camera pans and metaphor. So since this medium of writing is different and is taking place day by day, we're getting to see more of the normal stuff than...normal. But there will be some action and vamps and craziness, for sure.

I'm glad you like Giles' explanation of dimensional travel. Buffy was the one who said the undead ass line - I tend to not use the descriptors in each line of dialogue in a conversation if the same person is saying the next line. If Xander had said it I would probably have said "Xander interjected" or something like that.

Gee, Giles let's call a spade a spade. (Where did that phrase come from? Is it racist? I hope not.).

Someone I used to work with said that call a spade a spade was a racist term, but it appeared in some Greek plays as well. So I googled it - it's interesting reading. I call a fig a fig, a spade a spade.

Yeah, when I was outlining this story and seeing where in canon we were in S6, it struck me that Willow had been using magic in S5 a lot and doing a bunch of spells alone to try to hurt Glory, and at times she and Tara talked about it ("No more teleportation spells" after Willow got the bloody nose). Then when she resurrected Buffy and they told Giles he went OFF - "You're a rank, arrogant amateur" - remember that? So I figured that he was probably a little ticked with her at this point in canon but it was kind of below the surface - but he was likely to blame her if something appeared to go awry.

Quote:
It was Buffy, silhouetted in the soft light from the hallway as she slowly opened the door.
I feel like this is a fantastic line. I don't know if it's intentional but the use of all the ls and ss ( I have no idea how to write that) make the line really show the way Willow is gliding out of sleep. It's a very sensual depiction.

Thanks! I remember that as I was writing that the alliteration just slid into place. I think that I probably noticed it so maybe searched for a couple of words to keep it going. But there's a lot of stuff when writing that seems to spring up from the subconscious and then I notice it later. Have you ever experienced that?

Yes, I think it's important that Willow experience some empathy here, because it's a journey for her and in her world back in AU Sunnydale, she's kind of isolated and wrapped up in her own life, such as it is. And the understanding about Willow and Tara's relationship is important to. I think you're right that until this point in her life she's never thought much about gay relationships, and she hasn't known anyone gay. And anytime she might have started to think about a gay relationship, she sort of cut the thought off at the knees.

Thanks Debra!

Hi Michelle - thanks for your compliments! I'm glad to know that you are growing fonder and fonder of the tale!

Like I've said in previous feedback, we'll find out what happened to the right Willow at the end of the story, but it's not part of the main plot. We'll find out why it happened, too - bit by bit. :) I don't mean to be mysterious - but all things in good time. Thank you so much for reading! ;)
grimlock72

Yes, Tara's definitely the most affected by the switch. I would say that the other scoobs are attached to Willow also, but AU Willow is not necessarily picking up on their distress right now. Although you're right, during S6 they were all pretty self-involved. Not for bad reasons, but yeah.

Yeah, I think Giles' standards are pretty stodgy, in terms of magic safety and all, but it's not all for bad reasons, if you look ahead to what happened in later S6 with dark magic and all. And Willow would have died in S5 when she decided to take on Glory by herself if Buffy hadn't followed her and bailed her out. But yeah.

Yeah, I agree that comforting Tara would be strange and AU Willow knows that's not her place anyway. I'm sure that her head is spinning - mine sure would be. I think that probably Buffy and maybe Willow's parents would miss her, but you're right - she doesn't have a lot of close ties in her old dimension. Thanks grimster!
tarawhipped

Cam!!! 2.5 months sure does count as new, you betcha. I'm glad Willow went to a good dimension - she's a backgammon fiend, you know. And it's not my fault that I made her neurotic in Candle - I just wrote what I saw, you can tell her that. Heh. I guess Giles was right - they didn't necessarily know that Willow went to AU Willow's dimension - here she is in ours!

I'm so glad you stopped by! I won't be showing what happened to the other Willow until the end of this story - she ain't part of the main plotline. Hee hee. Willow in a white jacket - what an image. I think a straightjacket would be so claustrophobic. And what if you had to go to the bathroom? I shudder just to think.

Many thanks for reading, Caminator!
Foomatic

Foo, hi!!! How was the wedding?

You've always had a way with words and dialogue that make me want to give up writing

Gawd, if that's true then I'm stopping writing and deleting all my stories because I can't bear the thought that you might not continue She's Got A Way! When I first read SGAW I LOVED it. It also created some feelings of inadequacy in me because I felt pretty sure that I wouldn't be able to write like you. And then I eventually realized that we all write differently and it's all enjoyable. So back to the keyboard, missy! ;) :gavel

Well, we won't be seeing anything from Willow #2's perspective. At the end we'll find out what happened to her. That's all I can promise. :D And I'd also like to say WELCOME BACK and thanks for reading!

Thanks: To my beta, Mrs. McFine, for her editing and storyline skills that are out of this world.
Setting: AU/canon crossover
Summary: What happens when a shy, introverted girl is torn away from her world and deposited into a dimension full of vampires, demons, and...a girlfriend?

Part 8 - Layers

Willow woke up early. Her sleep had been restless and filled with troubling dreams, and when she finally surfaced through the last remnants of the dream, she felt tremendous disappointment to still be in Buffy's bed. A tiny part of her had hoped that when she woke up, she'd be back in her world and could write off the strange events of yesterday as a side effect of her head injury.

Apparently not - she was still here, at any rate. As she lay in bed a fantasy crept into her mind. What if she had knocked herself out on the freezer door and hadn't woken up at all? What if, instead of coming to groggily on her kitchen floor with Buffy in tears, and being rushed to the hospital, she had remained unconscious and was right now lying in a coma at the Sunnydale hospital? And this weird experience, this strange world, was all happening in her head?

She felt warmed by the idea. If that was what was happening, then all she'd have to do would be to wait it out until she woke up. And this world - it didn't really matter what she did while she was here. She was just killing time until her body and brain healed enough to welcome her back. Yes, that had to be it!

She sighed. As attractive as the idea was, it didn't feel right. Her experiences didn't have a dreamlike quality to them - they were so close to real life that she had trouble believing that she was in some version of La-La-Land. And if she was in a coma, she would hope that she'd dream up a place for herself to spend time that was a little more...fun than this place was. But regardless of whether she was really here or not, she felt physically unable to lie in bed any longer. Spending the better part of the last 16 hours asleep was about as much as her body could tolerate.

She guessed it was early - no one else in the house seemed to be up yet, from what she could hear. Yes, the clock said 6:30am - too early for Buffy, to be sure, especially if she had been out late last night. She didn't know Dawn, but figured the teenager's sleeping habits were probably the same as others in her age group. And Tara - well, Tara might be an early riser for all Willow knew.

A quick inspection of the hall closet yielded towels where she remembered, and she felt refreshed after a shower. She dressed in Buffy's room, donning the other Willow's borrowed clothes. She sorted through the stack of shirts Tara had given her, finally choosing the most muted of the selection, which wasn't saying much - all of the shirts seemed to be brightly colored or to have some sort of strange design on them. The shirt she chose was multicolored and a little tighter and busier than she would usually wear, but it was the least wild of everything in the pile.

Showered and dressed, she turned some attention to her surroundings. Yesterday she had been too tired to notice many details about Buffy's room, but today with a clearer head she looked around. There was a framed picture on top of the dresser of her - Willow, that was, though she found herself thinking "her" instead; somehow it seemed easier - Buffy, and Xander with their arms around each others' shoulders at graduation. She stared for a long while at the three people in the picture, wondering how different her own high school experience would have been if Xander had lived, and if they and Buffy had been able to form their own version of the Three Musketeers in her world.

Another picture on the dresser caught her eye and startled her - it was Buffy standing with her arms around a man. She picked up the photograph, sure that her eyes were playing tricks on her - but no, it really was Buffy and Dr. Angel. Instead of the antagonism her roommate had shown toward the doctor, in this scene they looked happy and comfortable together - even a little snuggly. She shook her head and replaced the photo on the dresser.

On another wall was a bulletin board which held a variety of pictures, ribbons, and other odds and ends. Willow gazed at these photos, her eyes drawn to a picture of her and Tara. They were sitting on the couch in flannel pants and T-shirts, cuddled up together. Tara was sitting upright, while Willow was lying down, her head in Tara's lap. The perspective was from above, as if the photo taker had been standing up a few feet away from the couch. Both were looking at the camera with grins, and Willow could almost hear the photographer saying something funny to elicit the reactions.

She couldn't tear her eyes away from Tara's hands, which were caught in the act of stroking Willow's hair. One hand was tucking a lock of red hair behind Willow's ear, while the other one was in the process of smoothing her hair back from her forehead. The gesture, for all its unconsciousness and intimacy, was piercing. Willow became aware of her breathing as she continued to look at the scene, and tried to think back to her relationship with Danny. Had they ever been so easy with each other, so intimate? The photos she had of her and Danny together had been taken by Buffy when they were on their way out somewhere, and they looked stiff and awkward in them, compared to this scene.

That had ended up being part of the issue between her and Danny, anyway - her social circle had consisted mainly of him and Buffy, and she liked it that way. That hadn't mattered as much at first when they were interested in getting to know each other, but as the months wore on, Danny seemed to have tired of their nights spent exclusively together. He had tried to cajole Willow into going out to parties or bars with his group of jazz band friends, and she had given it a try, but she never felt like she fit in, and eventually begged off.

She sighed, and tore her eyes away from the picture. She checked the clock; the glowing green digits said 7:30am. She decided to go downstairs and read a magazine or a book until the others were up.

She spent about half an hour on the couch reading last month's copy of Cosmopolitan. She had just gotten to the quiz - "How Kinky Are You?" - when she heard the shower upstairs. Apparently someone else was awake.

Soon after, Tara came down the stairs with damp hair clinging to the collar of the Sunnydale High School sweatshirt she was wearing.

"Good morning," Willow said. She noticed that Tara's eyes were puffy and red, though the blonde seemed composed.

"Morning," Tara said. She did a slight double take at Willow sitting on the couch, but recovered quickly.

Willow looked at her sweatshirt curiously. "Did you go to Sunnydale High too?"

Tara shook her head. "No, I grew up in northern California. This is Willow's sweatshirt."

"Oh." Willow suddenly felt awkward, as if she should have known.

Tara cleared her throat. "I usually make breakfast on Saturdays, if you're hungry. We have eggs, cereal, there's some bacon in the fridge - oh, but you don't eat bacon."

"Right - but eggs sound good. Don't go to any trouble, though."

"It's no trouble." Tara followed her words with a faint smile. "I might wait till I hear some stirrings from upstairs, though, unless you're ravenous."

Willow shook her head. "I'm okay." In fact, she was quite hungry, but didn't want to inconvenience the blonde.

Tara walked over and perched on the arm of an armchair, and cleared her throat. "Did you sleep well?"

Willow nodded. "Yes, very well. I woke up pretty early - I think I got so much sleep yesterday that my body just couldn't take any more rest."

Tara smiled. From upstairs, they heard footsteps, a door opening and closing, and a toilet flush. Shortly after, a sleepy and yawning Buffy came downstairs, still dressed in her pajamas.

"Did we wake you?" Willow asked.

Buffy stretched and shook her head. "No, not at all. I think sleeping in a strange bed was what did it, actually."

"Where did you sleep last night?" Willow hadn't even considered where Buffy would sleep, since she had given up her room.

"With Dawn - who is still dead to the world."

Tara stood up. "Breakfast, Buffy?"

Buffy nodded eagerly. "I'm famished."

"How do you like your eggs, Willow?"

Willow closed the magazine and put it down on the coffee table. "Sunny side up?"

Tara's expression was carefully neutral as she nodded and walked into the kitchen.

"Did I say something wrong?" Willow asked Buffy.

"No, not at all," Buffy said. "It's just that Willow - our Willow - also likes her eggs sunny side up. It's a little joke between her and Tara."

Willow nodded. She felt slight surprise that after all the differences she had noticed between her and her counterpart, that they had something in common. I suppose I shouldn't be so surprised, though - we're probably more alike than different.

From the kitchen came sizzling and gurgling sounds, and the smell of bacon frying and coffee brewing soon permeated the lower level of the house. After some discussion, they decided to let Dawn sleep in. Willow remembered what Tara had said about breakfast yesterday - that she had made eggs and pancakes, and that Dawn had decided to have cereal instead.

Tara served Willow's eggs to her and put a stack of toast on the kitchen table. She and Buffy were having scrambled eggs as well as the bacon Willow had smelled earlier, and each had a cup of coffee to go with it. Willow took a piece of toast and broke the yolks of her eggs with a fork, using the toast to sop up the yolk. She noticed Tara watching her, and wondered if the other Willow did the same.

"So, Willow," Buffy spoke into the silence, "you and I - I mean, your Buffy - live together in your world?"

Willow nodded. "Yes, in an apartment over on Redwood Place."

"How come not in the house?"

Willow shifted in her seat. "The house was sold, um, after…" she trailed off, not sure how to finish the sentence.

"Was it Mom? Buffy's mom, I mean?" Buffy winced in anticipation of the answer.

Willow bit her lip. "Joyce, um, died during our senior year of high school. It was a brain tumor."

Buffy nodded and looked down at her plate. "How?"

Willow felt her heart throb in sympathy. "She died in the hospital from complications after surgery. She never woke up. Buffy - my Buffy - was a wreck, which I guess goes without saying. She moved in with me and my parents for the rest of our senior year."

"Poor Mom," Buffy said, her eyes shining with tears.

"Yeah," Willow said. She hated to ask the question, but figured she knew the answer already. "Is your mom…"

Buffy nodded and wiped at her eyes.

"When did it happen?"

"A few months ago. She had had a brain tumor removed, too, but seemed to be doing fine. Then one day I came home and found her…on the couch. She was so…still. They said it was an aneurysm."

Tara reached over and rubbed Buffy's back comfortingly as she struggled with her words. She took a few deep breaths and her voice stopped quavering.

"Anyway, after she died, it was just me and Dawn here. Then some other stuff happened when we were fighting a hellgod and I got...sick for a while, so Willow and Tara moved in to help out with Dawn." Willow detected something evasive in Buffy's tone but figured now wasn't the time to pursue it.

"That was nice of them. You, I mean," Willow amended, directing her comment at Tara. She heard herself and internally cursed - nice of them? She hurriedly continued before anyone had to respond.

"So are you and Dr. Angel dating?" she asked.

Buffy gave her a decidedly confused look. "Angel?"

This was beginning to feel familiar. "He's not a doctor in this world, I take it?"

Tara stifled a giggle, which sounded strange in the quiet kitchen so soon after the sad conversation.

"Sorry," the blonde said. "It's just...Angel's definitely not a doctor here." She glanced over to Buffy, who responded with a nod. "He's...a vampire."

Willow was stunned. The nice doctor who had done so much to allay her fears, who had clashed with Buffy in the hospital over her care, was a bloodsucking fiend in this world? She didn't know what to say.

"Oh," she finally responded, blinking. "He's my neurologist." She paused. "So he's an evil demon here? He seemed like a nice guy. But wait, why is there a picture of you two in your room? It doesn't look like you're trying to slay him. I wasn't snooping, it was just there on the dresser," she rushed to explain.

Buffy smiled. "It's...complicated. He's a vampire, yes, but he has a soul. It's a long story, but the short version is, he crossed some Gypsies, and they cursed him with a soul."

"Doesn't sound like much of a punishment," Willow said.

"Not on paper, but he had been a vampire for hundreds of years at that point, and had killed a ton of people, and was pretty nasty. So he had a really hard time adjusting to having a soul and a conscience again. I think he went kind of insane with the guilt."

"So he's insane?" Willow asked. She was having trouble assimilating all the information.

"No, not now - at some point he started helping people and fighting evil, and that helped. It gave him a purpose. He's not what I'd call cheerful, but he's not like he used to be."

Willow nodded thoughtfully. "He helped me a lot when I was in the hospital, beyond the doctor stuff, I mean. I was worried, but he has a very good bedside manner, and was patient with all the questions I had about my head."

"Yeah," Buffy said. "He helps people here, too. Although I don’t think I’d say he has a great bedside manner." Another silence developed, but it didn't feel quite as uncomfortable. Willow had more questions - did Buffy actually date Angel, then, or were they just close friends? Where was he now? She felt like now wasn't probably the time to ask them, though - she didn't want to upset the sense of camaraderie and commonality that had grown out of the conversation with an interrogation.

Tara stood up and started to collect the plates. Willow stood up too and gathered her dishes.

"I can get that, Willow," Tara said.

"You cooked - I'm happy to do the dishes," Willow replied. "If that's okay."

"Sure - thank you." Tara looked faintly surprised, but didn't push the point.

"When you're done with that, we should probably head over to the Magic Box," Buffy said. "More research for how to get you home."

Willow nodded. As she rinsed the dishes and scrubbed out the frying pan, her thoughts wandered to questions about the dynamics around the other Willow, rather than questions about how to get back to her dimension. Did her counterpart usually do the dishes, or was it rare? Did Tara shoulder most of the housework for the entire household? She felt a growing curiosity, but chalked it up to the normal curiosity that anyone would have about an alternate version of themselves, and went upstairs to brush her teeth.

Image

"Giles," said Anya from her perch behind the counter at the Magic Box. "Maybe you can explain something to me."

"Maybe," said Giles. He rubbed his temples - a long night of reading after leaving Buffy's house last night had left him sleep-deprived and frustrated. "What is it?"

"When you told Willow you thought she had switched places with our Willow - you were right, the flash of light and the headache were indicative of dimensional travel, especially for a first-timer. But I don't understand why you think that they necessarily switched with each other - there could have been a hundred other things that happened. It's unpredictable."

Giles sighed and put his glasses atop his head, covering his face with his hands so he could more easily rub his eyes. "Yes, I know. I thought it was best to put forth that I thought they had switched, rather than any of the other possibilities. I didn't want to panic Willow any further than she already was - or Tara, for that matter."

"So you said something that you knew wasn't necessarily the case to spare everyone's feelings?"

"That's right."

"That's what I thought," Anya said with pride. "That's why I backed you up, even though I thought it was hinky. And I could have pointed out several holes in your logic."

Giles looked over at the ex-demon with surprise. "Anya, you showed restraint. And tact."

"I know!" she crowed.

The sound of voices outside the door came into earshot and grew louder. He shot Anya a look.

"And that look you just gave me means two things - first, you're proud of me for catching on to the feeling-sparing thing. And second, that we should keep the uncertainty about which dimension our Willow is in between ourselves."

Giles nodded. "Quite so." As he spoke, the door opened, and Buffy, Dawn, Tara, and Willow came into the shop.

Anya twirled around on the stool behind the counter, shooting Giles a virtuous, conspiratorial look.

"Good morning," he greeted them. "Let's get to work."

Dibs!

ETA: Actual Feedback

Good Afternoon Sally Pants!

So, alterna-dimensional Willow dressed in Willow's clothes, piecing together relationship dynamics from photographs, and eating breakfast with the girls...

I found it really poignant to read about alterna-dimensional Willow looking at the scooby photos -- I feel like it was a big moment for her to acknowledge that there was this really deep intimacy between Tara and Willow. It was nice, and I can't help but think that there is somthing to be learned both by alterna-dimensional Willow and the reader about this -- maybe an insight into how a Willow might process being kinda gay? I dunno -- all I know is that the image of Tara stroking Willow's hair was really beautiful and touching and it felt like alterna-dimensional Willow got that too.

So Tara has been crying, but is still trying to hold it together and make breakfast for the family. Alterna-dimensional Willow notices. She notices a lot. I think she and Willow have this innate inquisitiveness in common. Even though it was a sad moment, it made me smile to recognize that similarity.... and I think that may have been what you were going for (what with the 'more alike than different' line)... I was interested in all alterna dimensional Willow's observations - the awkwardness about Angel and the who does the housework musing...

So Tara. I know that this story is from alterna dimensional Willow's perspective - but I think that makes it almost imperative that we 'see' Tara through Willow (ad)'s eyes [ok, so I have *finally* tired of writing "alterna-dimensional Willow so she will hence forth be Willow (ad), k?]. Tara is so sweet and good, too sweet and good. She is sad,a sadness that is only going to grow with Willow's abscence and this unattainable look-alike/sound-alike stranger living with her. I think that somehow and at some point Willow (ad) is going to need to see Tara's sadness. I don't know why, except that I think I need to see it -- it still feels like compartmentalization. I expect it will get a little more desperate as the story goes on.

and OMG - Anya with her pseudo-sensitivity! Beyond Funny!!

Another fantastic update!

This story is mesmerising.

Lovely writing as Willow looks at the photographs particularly as she becomes "aware of her breathing" as she studies herself and Tara.

I enjoyed Anya crowing.

Great stuff.

Woot! Wonderful update. I like how Willow is beginning to work out how the group dynamics function in this reality, but my heart just breaks for Tara. I hope they figure something out soon. More updates soon please?

Ha! That was pure Willow trying to talk herself into this being the result of her actually being in a coma in the real world. Too funny.

Shame she isn't having more fun in La-La-Land.

Aww poor Tara all with the red eyes and wearing Wills high school top. She is dealing with this in her own quiet way and Willow has to go mention how she likes her eggs. Poor thing, how much more can she really take before having a meltdown.

we're probably more alike than different

:hmm you may be on to something Willow

SallyMcFine: Great update, I liked that the other Willow is also very curious like our Willow, and I'm glad that she showed some restraint about some things. I also really liked that Buffy wanted to know more about the other Willow's world, and I felt really bad for Buffy for having to relive what happened to her Mom. I can't wait to read more.

Sally
Sorry I haven't left feedback in a while - RL been keeping me too busy. I really enjoy this story. I love the concept and how you're handling it.

I like the way you explore Willow's character and show us more of the gang through the gradual shift of Willow's focus from her own situation to wanting to find out about the people in this dimension. Her growing awareness of the similarities/ differences between her and the Willow that belongs in this dimension will lead to some interesting revelations for us all, I'm sure.

Laughed at Anya ensuring Giles was aware of her good deeds - she's growing up but still needs parental approval.

Thanks
Anne

Awsome.
Ahhh, things are so complicated. So the "this-world-original" Willow is really really missing now. Oh my!
It's true Willow is starting to know and move around better on this world and all but, about Tara and stuff there's so much for happen yet.
Can't wait for more.
Keep the great work up.

I'm not the first to say it, but my favorite part is Willow looking at the picture of canon-Willow and Tara on the couch. You really captured the emotions, both alterna-Willow's growing understanding as she looks at it, and the love between canon-Willow and Tara as the picture was taken. Alterna-Willow is starting to see that there's something missing in her life but that clearly it's possible for one iteration of herself to have it.

I love that you indulged our curiosity and highlighted some of the similarities and differences between the two universes. Willow's confusion about Dr. Angel was great. As an outsider, the Scoobies' lives look pretty complicated. I wonder if Spike will show up - he'd probably throw her for a loop.

I wonder if the sensitive, dish-washing alterna-Willow will start to look appealing to Tara. I know I love a woman who washes dishes and knows when I've been crying.

As usual, your Anya is hilarious. Really, you write her better than anyone else. You give her depth and motivation, rather than just making her a walking one-dimensional stereotype.

Fabulous update - can't wait for the next.

I gotta agree with Grayson, and say that my favorite part of this story was Alternate Willow looking at Canon Willow's life. It really makes the situation an emotional one for Alternate Willow, knowing that Canon Willow's life and her own are similar, but different. Really heartwrenching.

I also love the realization on Willow's part that what she may be experiencing is the result of a coma. It's yet another of the things that makes me wonder what's really going on for poor Willow, and how you plan to eventually reveal everything. (You do plan to do that, right?)

But I have to say that I don't like Anya and Giles' decision to keep things from Willow, even if they think it's for her own good. Those sorts of things are never good to keep from others.

Nice update, Sally. Hope everything works out for Willow.

Sally,
Again we see the tenacity of the human mind, as Willow awakens, to try and place the events in which it finds itself into some logical framework and to make sense of the situation even though it has no common reference point upon which to hang any sort of conclusion.
Many's the time I have awoken to find myself still stuck working the same bloody grinding job so I know something of Willow's dismay.
From "it was all a dream, Miss Kitty Fantastico" to the faint hope that this was a sort of celestial waiting area whilst her mind and body took the time to recuperate, Willow had started to entertain the possibilities of life beyond the merely tangible i.e, that which could be discerned by the five senses.
As has been made mention in the feedback of others, your attention to the most minute and seemingly insignificant of differences between transplanted Willow and homefield Willow really ground this story in the humanity of which we measure daily existence.
Willow sorting through the clothes Tara laid out on the bed for her, thinking "Gee, the other Willow likes to flaunt it more than I do since her clothes tend towrds the eye-catching in terms of style and color."
On a far more personal level, the myriad of variant details between the path this world's Willow took and that of transplant Willow's is graphically broght home by the photos in Buffy's room.
Willow has pause to wonder about whther she would have been happier if she, Buffy, and Xander had formed the Three Musketeers bond insitead of Xander being taken from her.
Far more revealing in terms of her identity is the photo of this world's Willow snuggled up close with Tara on the couch.
Willow is now confronting the issue of sexual identity and gender roles as she sees the absolute security and bliss reflected in the position of Willow's recumbent psition in Tara's lap and Tara so lovingly and softly stroking Willow's hair with her fingers.
Willow doubts whether she and Danny ever had that kind of harmony between them.
This is borne out even further when Tara notices that this Willow shares similarities with her Willow over their egg preparation.
Methinks this Willow is having her consciousness raised about the infinite variety of paths that one can choose and, if she gets back to her world, she won't choose the path of no timber in hopes of finding her way to the Tara of that Earth.

In a way, I was almost disappointed there weren't more people in that grafduation photo;but then, it was enough for Willow to evaluate as it was.
PErsonally, I have to agree with Anya and Giles. Treating the situation as a direct substitution of ALterna-Willow for semi-Canon-Willow is at least a potentially soluble problem. So if it's true, a swithcback is presumably a fairly straight-forward use of diemnsional magic.
Whereas if any number of interdimensional Willows are trading places in a complex or even random pattern, it's probably not soluble no matter how long they look at it. So it's best to concentrate on what can be done. If that's enough, it's good;if not, then there's time to deal with that later.
