Bumper Stickers

Postby JustSkipIt » Mon Jul 10, 2006 7:18 pm

Seen any good Bumper Stickers lately? Bad ones? I like reading them although I don’t really like decorating my car with them. I still have a Kerry 2004 sticker on my car and last week someone pulled up behind me at an intersection and started honking like crazy and pointing at my bumper—either my trunk was open (it wasn’t) or he was incensed that I would dare to have such a sticker on my car.

Stickers I’ve seen lately:

I’ve seen three of these stickers that have like a stick-figure man “+” stick-figure woman “= Marriage” You can imagine how I feel about that one.

Saw one that said “When God said ‘love your neighbor,’ I don’t think he meant to kill them.”

Saw one that said “I don’t have to like Bush to love my country.”

Also, here we have a sort of “Keep Austin Weird” thing. It’s like an ongoing thing to keep the city itself vitalized and keep people shopping locally since the city is growing so fast. I live in a Suburb and lately I’ve been seeing “Keep Round Rock moderately Unusual” stickers.

What about you?

There's a jeep up the street from me that has an upside down bumper sticker on the back that reads: "If you can read this...flip me over."

But I'm kinda partial to the one that I saw on a covertible: "When it's hot, I go topless."

I saw one that said "God was my co-pilot, but we crashed in the mountains and I had to eat him."

On a more serious note, a couple that I liked were:

- "Feminism is the radical notion that women are people"
- "Equal rights are NOT special rights"

And a personal favourite, a Doctor Who-themed sticker:

"TARDIS EXPRESS: When it absolutely, positively had to be there before you sent it!"

I have that one at home, but I like it too much to actually put it on a car... :p

My current favorite is "Frodo failed...Bush has the ring"

And just today in the parking structure at work I saw a "Keep Austin Weird" sticker. Guess we have some transplanted Austinites (or Austinians...) in Denver.

The other day I saw one that said: Jesus loves you, but everyone else thinks you're an a-hole. I thought it was funny. Plus, it reminds me of the movie Saved!.

I have seen some really funny ones. The funniest one I saw was in the back window of a mini. It said;

"Eve was framed"

Others I have seen;

"Goddess on the loose"

"Women are great leaders, you're following one"

"Real women don't have hot flashes, they have power surges"

"I'm straight but not narrow"
“....and that is why you don't run.”

"Who gets the toaster for that one?"

My car has "Mission Aborted: Gone to the Pub" in the back window.

I once saw, written in the dirt on a car in the car-park of a church, the words "Baptise Me". I laughed for ages....

Around here, I see a lot of Bright Blue Dot stickers on cars. I have one and I've given many away to friends. It's such a joy to see them out on the road, especially if I happen to be driving through a particularly red area and get lost in a sea of W stickers. They make for instant bonding in parking lots, too. If you live in a red state, check out the site, they're pretty cheap.

I also have one of those long sparkly rainbow strips across the back of my car. It's pretty. (And a rainbow plate on the front of my car, since we don't have to have real license plates up there like some states.)

I held on to my Kerry/Edwards bumper sticker until it got ridiculous and I peeled the thing off. I think I'll put on a sticker for my favorite gubernatorial candidate, but I am waiting to see if she pisses me off, since the Republicans are pressuring her to take a public stance on "moral" issues like abortion and gay marriage. If she comes out against, I will not support her in public. But I expect she will, because Southern Democrats make most everyone else's Republicans look like Greens. If that makes sense.

I have been collecting bumper stickers forever. And all those "Celebrate Diversity" and "Fight Racism" sorts of bumper stickers. Most of them are trite, really, but I do like them. Some of my favorites are:
[blockquote]Gay By Nature, Proud By Choice

Say "I do" to equal marriage rights

Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History

Where's The Messiah When We Need Her?

Why do we kill people who kill people to show that killing people is wrong?

Equal Rights Are NOT Special Rights

Hatred Is NOT A Family Value

Love Animals Don't Eat Them

Religion is for people afraid of going to Hell. Spirituality is for those who have been there.

Last time we mixed politics with religion... people got burned at the stake[/blockquote]
I saw a good one a while back: "God Bless the Whole World No Exceptions." I like those "Lord, help me be the person my dog/cat thinks I am" ones. And the "What if the Hokey Pokey IS what it's all about?" one. It's silly. I like.

I really want a "SOMOS UNA NACION DE INMIGRANTES" one, too. I'd put that one on my car.

Re: Well behaved women rarely make history...the woman who said this was one of my professors in college...she was without a doubt the most boring professor I ever had...I think she got lucky and the one interesting thing she ever said became famous...she looked like a stereotypical school marm in an old movie...high collars with big bows, conservative suits, glasses on a chain, unflattering hairstyle, permanent sour expression...the whole enchilada

*looks at bumper sticker, reads the fine print for the first time ever* Laurel Thatcher Ulrich? Wow. It's fascinating that you know her. For some reason, I seem to assume that really well-known quotes come from long-dead people. Thanks for posting about it, because I did not know who she is and I'd have never noticed the name, most likely. I googled her and that book about the midwife sounds very interesting.

I love bumper stickers. I have an HRC decal in my window. I used to see one around my aunt's neighborhood "Bush: Like a Rock, Only Dumber." The "Jesus is Coming: Look Busy" one cracks me up.

Back when Ann Richards was running for Govenor (re-election) of Texas against Bush (the Shrub), I saw quite a few "Ann will lick Bush in ..." (whatever year it was).
