Re: Geek Love

Tara leaned in and softly brushed her lips against Willow's. It was a tiny butterfly touch, but her eyes were closed as if she needed to fully channel her emotions through that one brief contact. Willow felt like she could hear and smell and taste all of Tara, and it was only one gentle peck.

*Sigh*....

But...I've said it before and I'll say it again, honesty is absolutely the best policy, and Willow really should have thought of some kind of compromise - taking Tara to the convention, meeting her afterwards for Wicked, something. Fibbing is never good, keeping quiet can be good, but fibbing never is. In my humble opinion....

Anyway, we'll see....

PS: I noticed the odd thing with Faith not recognising Tara too, but I guess you'll explain it in one of the other replies...

watty - I'm as thrilled about the sweet kiss as anyone but I'm considering dropping a cartoon anvil on Willlow's head. First off: Wicked! You moron - it will be like 6 years before it comes here. Second: lying again! The thing is that it's starting to seem not like an aberation but like an actual aspect of Willow's personality. As in part of the individual she is is that she's a person who lies as a first instinct and then confesses later. That's not a very attractive personality trait and if I were Tara, I'd be likely to start to notice the pattern. I mean it's flattering to say "I wanted to impress you" but saying "I wanted to go to something more important than you but I didn't want to tell you" is a different thing entirely.

And just so you know that I'm not just talking out of the side of my mouth, seven years ago I had my tickets for the Tech vs. UT game here in Austin. Now I have 2 degrees from Tech and one from UT and had my tickets along with my sister, brother, and some friends. I met Rachel and we started dating and she had a choir concert with a solo that night. I didn't even ask; I gave away the tickets and went to the concert and never looked back. I seriously never considered doing otherwise and have never regretted it. And I think that it really impressed the crap out of her!

Now the restaurant scene. I'd love to know how the confrontation between Faith and Donnie went. More importantly, I'd love to understand how it was that Faith didn't recognize Tara? I'm puzzled there.

Anyway, I love the story but I don't love Willow's actions. You know?

Watty!

How can Willow almost confess her love and all with he butterly smoochies and everything and still keep the truth from Tara?!

Willow has *got* to stop being a lying liar. Tara *will* find out. This is going to end badly. Wah!

The thing is, Tara likes Willow... and I think Willow is just convinced that it can't be true or something to that effect. What? Me relate to that? I scoff (or not, you choose).

The Faith in the chat room thing is a surprise -- but I am glad to see that she has some geek infested roots too. I wonder how she found it? What brought her there? Why she keeps it a secret and continues to antagonize one of her on line buddies. She is just plain wierd.

...and now my time has expired and I must run. I can't wait to read more!

And big sigh :blush can I hide now? Why didn't Faith recognize Tara in the restaurant? Because that was a big boo-boo from me, that's why. Commonly known as continuity error. I could go back and edit, but I'm not sure I will. May be as someone said in their comments, we pretend it was too dark in the restaurant and Faith didn't see properly? Or she is so self-centered that she really didn't?

Yay for dibs, even though you need to wrestle with a slow computer. Anyway, yes Willow is making a big huge mistake. she'll end up paying for it, I can promise you as much. Little kisses is good, and they're clearing things between them but there's trouble ahead. I'll fix it eventually, but I'll make y'all go through some angst first, yep I'm evil. >:)

~~~~~
diamondforever
Tara has always been smitten in this story, it good that things are coming out to the open, but trouble is ahead! :P
~~~~~

Alex

It seems that even when she's trying to be nice, Faith can be a pain in the ass.

*nods* Faith was remorseful for causing Tara alarm over the stalking incident, but it doesn't mean she will change overnight. For her own reason (which I will not delve into) she is so curious about what's going on between Willow and Tara -- "infiltrating" the chat group is one way of her satisfying that curiosity. I still maintain that she isn't malicious, only very misguided, and may be sub-consciously wanting a little of a good thing for herself.

Willow, but everyone but you can see that Tara will love you no matter what you do, so please wake up and see what the rest of us do before I have a heart attack. I don't think I can take much more of this drama.

Right on. She isn't thinking clearly at all! I'm a little frustrated at her too, and I wrote this. Oh, there's some more drama ahead, buckle up! :)

~~~~~
justin
:wave glad you found the story over here. The Ghost/Misery scenarios and surfing episode are some of my favourites. They are coming closer but I'm not going to let them off just yet. There will be more angst, heehee. >:)
Re: Faith not recognising Tara, see the general comment at the top of this post. It's my fault. :(
~~~~~

Auriam

Thanks! Glad you're enjoying the story. There as atill some ups and downs to come. :)

~~~~~
Selena Taiki
I am totally convinced that Faith is stalking *Willow* not Tara.
:hm very interesting theory. There may be some truth in that. Or she sees Willow the geek actually on her way to getting a girl, and she's either jealous or wants ... something.
Yes Willow is going to be in big trouble for this second lie. Update next.
~~~~~

KloeFrost

same HERE!

:lol Hi and welcome anyway. Update next.

~~~~~
db
Yes, the small kiss was great, but I'm not letting them off so easily.
Willow lied about the convention and Tara hates lies.
Exactly! Willow does seem to have gotten herself in this bind -- she didn't have to lie because Tara would have understood. But sometimes people do that, especially someone as insecure as Willow. Making bad decisions and not thinking clearly. It will come back and bite her on the ass, I can guarantee that. :P
More smoochies please.
Heehee. All in good time, my dear.
~~~~~

Sally

Lovely admission of attraction yes, but Willow isn't doing herself or Tara any favours by lying. She wasn't thinking, but actually there is a perfectly good solution, which has escaped her. She can go to the convention and the musical with Tara (one is during the day and the other is at night), but she's too caught up with her spazziness that she's completely missed ths simple stuff. It is frustrating, but I wanted to show that sometimes we do make these bad choices because we hadn't gotten all the information and think things through.

Re: Faith recognising Tara, that's a continuity error on my part. Thanks for spotting it, though I won't go back and change it now. Faith doesn't mean harm, but everything she does is hurtful to others. This isn't a story about her, but if it were it'd be interesting to explore her motives and reasons. She isn't a geek, that's obvious, so she's in the chat group as an interloper definitely.

Thanks for the support, Sallypants. :)

~~~~~
Dianneswillowtree
Oh yes, there is angst coming, but you know I'll fix it at the end! Thanks. :)
~~~~~

Ms Shoe

Willow really should have thought of some kind of compromise - taking Tara to the convention, meeting her afterwards for Wicked, something.

Exactly! :lol Willow simply didn't see it! Sigh. But it has happened to me, that I tried to fit in too much, or too little, in a day when I could have been more organised and planned a schedule. The fib will have consequences, but you know that already don't you.

~~~~~
Willow Watcher
Yes Faith is either curious or needs her own life. She won't be completely redeemed but I won't go too much into her personality. Glad you liked the little smoochies, but Willow spoiled it with lying. Update next.
~~~~~

viximon

Yes, first kiss. Glad you liked! Thanks. :)

~~~~~
Belli Bear
Oh hee, I'm so glad you like! Do hope that the marriage proposal is the twop style one and not a real one. :P
~~~~~

willohand

This is one fanfic that is taking me on what feel like that thing I hate. Im hating it but sick as I am loving it too.

yep you'll need to buckle up because the next ride has more ups and downs as the last one. But isn't it fun? :lol

~~~~~
Debra
lying again! The thing is that it's starting to seem not like an aberation but like an actual aspect of Willow's personality.
This is a great observation because Willow can't seem to help using lying as first recourse to solving her personal problems. There is an obvious solution to this, like Ms Shoe mentioned -- go to the convention during the day and meet up with Tara in the evening -- but sometimes when we're in the thick of it we don't see something so simple. Willow should have told Tara, definitely. Her lightbulb moment about what she's doing to Tara will come, rest assured.
Lovely story about you and Rachel, that you didn't need to think what was, and should be, the priority in your life. :applause Did I tell you she's an awesome crocheter? I did, but everyone should look at Debra's new ashvatar, because Asher is cute but also that Rachel made that costume!
Re: Faith and Tara, it's my omission. :( Thanks for spotting it.
I love the story but I don't love Willow's actions. You know?
I definitely get that. Thanks!
Hi again!
Willow has *got* to stop being a lying liar. Tara *will* find out. This is going to end badly. Wah!
*nods* yes yes and yes. There will be dire consequences for the lie.
The Faith in the chat room thing is a surprise -- but I am glad to see that she has some geek infested roots too. I wonder how she found it? What brought her there? Why she keeps it a secret and continues to antagonize one of her on line buddies. She is just plain wierd.
She read the url off Willow's computer at work. Why is she in the chatroom? Nothing sinister but it's a combination of curiosity, latent stalker tendencies and loneliness. Thanks dear. :)
Postby Artemis » Fri Nov 03, 2006 11:13 pm
Nooooo! Willow, don't be ashamed of your geekiness! That'd be agreeing with Faith, that Willow has something to be ashamed of, and agreeing with Faith isn't a good thing (even though she is right that Willow's being an idiot, it doesn't seem like she intends to do anything constructive about it).
But y'know, I can understand where Willow's coming from. It's like the surfing thing all over again, she doesn't want to disappoint Tara. And, sadly, she thinks that the geek side of herself would be a disappointment. And what geek hasn't worried about that? I know if I were bringing a girlfriend home, I'd be thinking of quietly shoving the Alien-action-figure-cuddling-Barbie-doll duo out of sight...
Nevertheless, Willow's digging herself into a deep hole here. She and Tara have already come through the surfer thing - this is the second time Willow's tried to white-lie her way out of a situation she thinks will disappoint Tara, and no matter how noble that motive is, she's going about it in the wrong way, and I expect Tara won't be so instantly forgiving this time. Fortunately I have faith (not 'I have Faith', though if she wasn't such a bitch that'd be neat for all kinds of reasons) in Willow's ability to recognise it when Tara tells her she did wrong, and Tara's ability to forgive when she sees Willow not just apologising, but sincerely regretting.
And perhaps then, Willow will bring Tara into the geek fold, and... well, granted, she'll probably be bemused and not get it much, but I think she'll find it charming rather than scary. Just so long as no-one has a recording of Willow going nuts over seeing Mina's panties...
Chris
But y'know, I can understand where Willow's coming from. It's like the surfing thing all over again, she doesn't want to disappoint Tara. And, sadly, she thinks that the geek side of herself would be a disappointment. And what geek hasn't worried about that?
Yep exactly. It's not purely that she's ashamed of her geekiness, or has the misconception that Tara will think any less of her. She just believes that Tara and geekiness won't mix. I have different sets of friends, some in RL some online, some a mix of both. While all my friends are very nice, I don't see them necessarily mixing well if I put them all in a room. The outcome may surprise me (like Cam and my colleague with 2 teenage sons may find that they share an interest in stamp collecting for instance) but in most circumstances, I won't want to risk awkward silences and misunderstandings that may occur.
this is the second time Willow's tried to white-lie her way out of a situation she thinks will disappoint Tara, and no matter how noble that motive is, she's going about it in the wrong way, and I expect Tara won't be so instantly forgiving this time.
Once bitten, twice shy. So true. Tara already is clear that she has a low tolerance for lies, and a second transgression is so much worse. There is a good reason why the judicial system gives harsher punishment for repeat offenders, it's because they should know better.
perhaps then, Willow will bring Tara into the geek fold
:lol I'm not going to spoil the rest of the story by confirming or denying this. Thanks, Chris.
Part 16
The sun was hovering just below the horizon, but underneath the shadow of the behemoth that was the International Convention Center, oblong lumps were already stirring.
"Tell me it's worth camping out all night for this," one young man crawling out of his sleeping bag said to his friend.
"Oh it's definitely worth it. Up close and personal with Karin, that's the fulfillment of my ultimate fantasy," the second young man said as he too crawled out of his sleeping bag and stretched.
"What's the ETA on Will?" Xander, the first young man, asked.
"She's taking the first train out. Should be here with plenty of time to spare," Andrew, the second young man, replied.
"Okay, let's get the show on the road," Xander started packing up his sleeping bag. He glanced at the assortment of boxes that were nested between Andrew and his sleeping place, making sure that the treasured action figures and collectibles were still intact.
Meanwhile, at the Rosenberg residence, it was DEFCON 1, RED ALERT and Panic Stations combined.
"It's not here! Where is it?" a flurry of red scuttled around her room, which had been turned upside down, while Willow ransacked every single possible crevice.
She moaned and whimpered as she emptied drawers, flipped her duvet and pulled all her books from their shelves.
"Think!!" she forced herself to stop and think back to the last time she saw the envelope.
She had it at home in the morning.
She and Faith fought over it, yesterday when Faith ...
invited ...
her ...
to ...
Tara's brother's restaurant.
THE RESTAURANT!!!
She dropped everything out of her backpack when she first spied Tara there, before the misunderstanding with Donnie was cleared.
The envelope must still be in the restaurant. May be the staff picked it up.
She scrambled for her cellphone and punched in the number. It didn't occur to her that it was 5am.
After an indeterminable number of rings, a sleepy voice answered. "The Greenhouse, how may I -- what time is it?" Willow recognized Donnie's voice but had too much on her mind to wonder whether he lived at the restaurant.
"I'm really sorry to call so early, this is Willow Rosenberg, Tara's friend?" she said.
"Ahhhh," Donnie yawned.
"Um," Willow hesitated.
"What is it?" Donnie's voice teetered between worry and annoyance.
"I lost a blue envelope, I think I left it at your restaurant. The contents of my backpack fell out, it must have fallen under the table," Willow explained. "It's very important."
"Well, if the cleaners found it, they'd put it in the lost and found box. I don't remember seeing any envelopes last night," Donnie said.
"It's really important. It's for ... work," Willow lied, she was so desperate.
"Not sure I can help you."
"Sorry to disturb you, sorry sorry."
Donnie yawned again. "Yeah, okay." He hung up before Willow had the chance to thank him.
Willow had no choice but to go to the convention center to face her friends. "I'm going to hell. Where is it? Why is it missing?" she muttered as she ran from the station.
She called Xander and Andrew from the train, and expected to be flogged and flayed by her friends when she reached the venue. Instead, Xander took one look at her miserable and ashamed expression and wrapped her in a bear hug.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry," she kept repeating. Guilt was written so clearly on her face.
"Will, it happens. We're disappointed, but there'll be another chance," Xander comforted.
"You're not mad?" Tears were in her eyes, she sniffed.
"We were at first. But it could have happened to us too. What if I was the one who had the tickets and they'd gone missing? I feel your pain, Will. It's our pain," Xander said.
"We decided we're going to set up our own stall right here, we can still sell our stuff. And then when we're rich, we'll go and get regular entrance tickets, okay?" Andrew chimed in.
Willow's tears continued to fall, only now they were tears of relief. She still felt guilty, for losing the tickets, and the big lie to Tara was hanging over her. But Xander and Andrew's understanding was right in front of her, she couldn't let them down. Everything else could be brushed aside for the next few hours.
*****
Donnie couldn't go back to sleep, his irritation at Tara's friend gnawed at him till he finally got up. The couch at the back room of the restaurant had been his make-shift home for the last few weeks. He switched the coffee-maker on and took out the key that opened the drawer where they put items that customers left behind. And there, amongst the wallets, cellphones and condom packets, was a thin blue envelope.
He called Tara immediately. If Willow Rosenberg would wake him up at god-awful hours to look for missing work documents, Tara could join the sleepless party too.
Her sleepy response was very much like his own an hour earlier. "Tara, your friend Willow called ridiculously early this morning. Seems that she left an important letter at the restaurant," he explained.
"What?" Tara hadn't fully woken up, but Donnie's mention of Willow was quickly clearing her mind.
"I told her I haven't seen anything, but I looked again just now, and her letter is here ... even addressed to her," he continued.
"She said it's an important document?" her mind was surprisingly able to piece together information, despite not yet functioning properly.
"Yeah, it's for work apparently," he confirmed.
"Okay, I'll call her," Tara pushed herself into a sitting position on the bed, fully alert now.
"I'll be here all morning, if she wants to pick it up," Donnie said. "And Sis, she owes us a big dinner. And may be even a session at the old phone booth."
"I'll tell her that," Tara replied.
She called and called, but Willow wasn't answering. She thought of leaving a voicemail or SMS. But then she had no way of knowing if Willow got the message.
If the documents were as important as Willow said ...
She dressed quickly and took a cab to the restaurant. Donnie was surprised to see her. "What are you doing here?" he asked.
"I can't reach her on her cell, I'm going to take it to her myself," she went to the drawer and retrieved the envelope, noting as Donnie had, that it was addressed to Willow.
"Do you know where she is?"
"She said something about the International Convention Center. It must be important." She was already rushing out of the door and flagging the nearest cab.
It was only when she had a moment to calm down in the cab that she studied the envelope. She broke into a shy smile when she read what Willow had written, about helping her buy a computer. Not only the words, the outside edge of the envelope was surrounded by hearts. She thought warmly back to last night, when they had said good-bye at her door with a kiss that was just as sweet as their first, but longer and more passionate. She was sure she had a smile as goofy as Willow's on her face when they finally parted.
She and Willow moved in different worlds. Hers was full of dinner parties and what some might term culture. Willow had a simpler life; her world, as Tara imagined it, was full of programs and statistics. Willow would have been someone she didn't give a second glance, had they encountered each other on the street. That night on the train, when the drunk attacked her, was the most frightening experience she had had to face in her entire life. And Willow put a stop to it. Willow stood up to an unstable, dangerous man twice her size, because he was assaulting Tara. There were no words for it, by that courageous act alone, Willow had captured Tara's heart. And over the past month, they had grown from two strangers to ... more. She knew that what she was feeling wasn't merely appreciation and gratefulness. The attraction between them that was so implausible on paper, had quietly grown into something so overwhelming that soon they would not be able to deny it.
Tara remembered the wish she made, all those weeks ago on the company yacht, tracing the pretend shooting star that Anya pointed out. She had wished to find someone to call her own, someone to understand her and to appreciate ... love ... her for her only.
"I found her," she said to herself.
She hadn't noticed that the cab had come to a complete halt. "Excuse me, miss. There seems to be an event up at the convention center, traffic is backed up," the driver interrupted her train of thought.
She rolled down the window and look ahead. There were cars everywhere. "Can you let me off here?" She paid the driver, adding on a generous tip and ran toward the exhibition hall. The driver commented that it was still quite a ways, but she didn't care.
One way or other, she was getting this to Willow.
*****
Business wasn't going well at the make-shift Mina stall that the three friends had set up at the corner of the square outside the convention center. At first they were scared that the security guards would chase them off; or that they'd get arrested by the police for illegal hawking, but no one harassed them.
In fact, they had virtually no visitors during the hour that they had been in operation. Sales was dismal.
Andrew had taken the opportunity of the lull to disappear. Willow wanted to look for him, but Xander aptly pointed out that there wasn't much he could have been doing anyway.
Forty-five minutes later, Andrew reappeared with an armful of goodies -- comics, posters and freebies from the various publishing houses and exhibitors. Inside the convention center.
"How did you manage to get inside?" Xander asked.
"Nevermind that, look what I have!" Andrew excitedly shared his spoils of war.
Soon the three friends were engrossed in their favorite joint activity -- drooling over Mina. Xander had his eyes glued to a new photo of Mina's captivating ankles. Andrew and Willow sat shoulder to shoulder, heads buried in a comic, critiquing the production quality of the newest edition.
"Look, her figure is fuller on this panel, definitely compared with volume 1 she's gotten bigger," Willow commented.
"Breast gal much, Willow?" Andrew teased.
"At least I'm proud of it, Wells," Willow jokingly ribbed in return.
"I prefer her lips. They're so luscious, and swollen," Andrew hummed.
"Lips are great, they're so soft." At Andrew's mention of lips, Willow's mind immediately transported her to last night, and how soft and inviting Tara's lips were. "Not even close. No comparison," she murmured.
"No comparison to what?" Andrew questioned.
Willow snapped back to reality. "Wouldn't you want to know? Keep staring at Mina's lips," she said.
"Oh my god! I'm hyperventilating," Xander waved a poster in their faces as he joined them, deliriously pointing at yet another depiction of Mina in poses that were at once innocent and suggestive. "The colors are so vivid, I feel like she's moving," he said dreamily.
"Yeah, so amazing!"
"I can't wait to see some more. There's more inside, right?"
"I didn't even start on the action figures and toys section!"
"I'm going to melt, this is primo stuff."
"It's wicked."
They were so enthralled that none of them heard the footsteps of a figure hurriedly running toward them. A figure who, once within earshot of the trio, had skidded to a halt abruptly.
Xander looked up first and had to swallow the off-color remark he was about to utter.
"This is so great," Willow was saying. She caught Xander's troubled expression. "What?"
Xander nodded in the direction of the newcomer.
Willow turned around and her face turned as white as a sheet as her world fell into a deep abysmal hole.
Oh, my... Willow is going to be in the doghouse for this soooo badly. Just as Tara was on a high about their relationship too - that can only have made the disappointment worse for her.
Not that I'm saying things would have been better had Willow not lost the envelope and thus gotten away with it, but just out of a general geek-sympathy for that horrible feeling when something important is planned, and something required for the plan goes missing... I'm blaming Faith for that. Somehow. I'm just going to blame Faith generally.
I'm genuinely curious to see how Willow and Tara will overcome this. Willow's already used up her 'freebie', with the surfer thing - she can't just promise it'll never happen again, that wouldn't be fair to Tara. She has to somehow demonstrate a sincere change in herself - one could argue that what she needs is the reassurance that Tara won't ditch her simply because there's an aspect of Willow she doesn't find interesting herself, but I think in this situation, the onus is on Willow to extend that trust to Tara, not on Tara to demonstrate it. Maybe Tara won't ever take to geekdom, maybe she'll love it and by the end of the fic she'll be going to cons with Willow dressed as Cammy from Street Fighter II (excuse me a moment while I process the thought of Tara in a thong-backed leotard with camouflage patterns painted directly onto her bare thighs :drool ) - but I definitely think what's gone wrong hasn't been Tara not showing willingness to accept Willow's quirks, but Willow trusting Tara enough to show them to her.
Still... no-one's perfect, and everyone hurts everyone else sooner or later. Willow will no doubt be on her knees apologising profusely, but for Tara, it really comes down to a simple question: is Willow worth it? Tara's a sensible woman - they both are (for a given definition of 'sensible') - and I imagine they'll both recognise that there's work to be done here, but in the end I think we know the answer :wtkiss
Well, I'd like to think that I can sympathize with Willow for what she's about to be going through, but to be honest, I'm so disgusted with how she's behaved in the past few chapters that I find it really difficult to have any real sympathy for her. I mean, yeah. I know I've said how much I loved her spazziness, and how it made her all cute and huggable, but there's only so far that can take you before it starts to get annoying and cause problems. And to be honest, that line got crossed a couple of chapters ago.
Now, I know that this is the Kitten, and that all has to end well with lots of :wtkiss , but I also know that there's still a lot of badness to get through before we get there. And ironically, while I was dreading it at the start of this fic, I'm all for it now, if only to see what will happen when Willow finally understands what the rest of us knew right away: Posh Tara + Mousy Willow = Geek Love.
After all, as I said before, you'd have to be dead not to love Willow, regardless of how she behaves.
Good work, watty! :peace :clap
:sheep
Tara was so sweet and ready to admit her feelings for Willow and was personally bringing the envelope and now...
Willow is *so* busted ... and also insane :crazy.
This was so avoidable and unnecessary and now Tara is going to be mad. Is she? Seems like Tara has been burned in the past and perhaps has some issues around trust. She's going to be mad. I am afraid that this might be a deal buster for her.
:cry :aww
No! Willow! She didn't come clean soon enough!! NO NO NO.
Willow was dumb. *stern look* Willow must now eat crow. Lots of it. ,,,and also apologize profusely,and also somehow convince Tara that she knows she was very, very dumb... and that she will *never* *ever* do that again. She needs to tell Tara how she feels - about herself, about Tara about the convention, about everything.
Still, I am worried. I imagine it will take more than that to even begin to rebuild trust with Tara.
Can Tara please forgive Willow?
:pray
Watty, you are cold and evil and heartless. The minute Willow lied I knew she (and by extension, us) was going to face one hellaciously embarrassing and painful comeuppance. And so I sooo didn't want to read this update (except that I did) because I assumed (no comments, please) that that moment of sheer hell was going to come in this chapter. But nooooo. You're going to draw this out for another week, leaving us to anticipate the wrenching moment when Willow's lie comes crashing down on both her and Tara. Thanks. Thanks a lot.
As for Willow's perfidy, there's not much to say that hasn't already been said by others. I recognize that Willow is ashamed of her geek-infested roots (and branches!); that she's afraid Tara will reject her if the depths of Willow's geekiness is revealed; afraid that she is unworthy of Tara. And ironically enough, the very actions she took to conceal her presumed unworthiness have made her actually unworthy. It's not the crime, it's the cover-up that'll get you. Just ask Richard Nixon. Or Bill Clinton.
CAUGHT!
Busted.
Alas.
Well, seems like it's a necessary step along the way for Willow to learn a lesson about honesty. I do feel some sympathy for her, though, because if she hasn't dated all that much then she's learning a lesson now that many people learn in high school, college, or their 20's - that lying isn't great.
Now the question in my mind is, will she and Tara work things out soon, like in the next weeks or months, or will they be separated for a long time and eventually find each other again? That's the question for me, because I don't see Tara forgiving Willow right away.
This is action-packed, watty, and I love the fast pace.
Yup, see, I was right. :smug Fibbing is bad. Hopefully Tara will think Willow is worth a bunch of second chances, not just the technical second chance that she's already wasted.
Luckily this is the Kitten and you are Watty, so right there's two reasons we know it will end up being OK. I fear it may be a while till we get to OK though - and part of me hopes it is a while. After all, that's realistic isn't it? Rebuilding trust gradually, rather than being gullible and letting any old Tom, Dick and Willow lie their way into and around your life? Maybe I'm being cynical...
The cliffhanger ending has me on the edge of my seat. Granted, it's a very comfortable seat upon which I can spin when bored, but I'm perched right on the edge of it nevertheless... :-D
Wow that's quite some cliffhanger you've got there. Actually when I finished reading it I was almost expecting to hear some Eastenders style end of episode music playing.
Well at least it's out now. It probably would have been worse if Tara had found out later. Also if Tara had never found out then there'd be the question of what Willow would do the next time her geeky side came out? Would she keep lying, digging herself into an ever deeper hole?
I'm guessing that Tara's not going take kindly to this and hopefully when Willow does manage to win her back (I recommend abseiling into Tara's room while wearing all black, and leaving behind a box of milk tray) she'll realise that being a big fat lying liar is more likely to push Tara way than being a geek.
Looking forward to the next part
Umm.....hi.
First off I have to say that I've been with this story from the beginning
and I'm completely in love with it. I know I should have left you your
much deserved feedback from the start....so I've been a bad kitten. :paranoid
But I just had to delurk myself because Willow is being such a
complete doofus I want to give her a boot to the arse! I'm with the
other kittens on her inexcusable behavior towards the hottest
woman on the planet. I can't believe she didn't learn her lesson the
first time. I'm pulling my hair out right now wondering what Tara's
going to do...(and the waiting with the cliffhanger isn't helping much
either ;-) ). I won't blame Tara for being pissed.
Willow better do some quality groveling and serious "Im sorry" candy and
flower giving.
Anyway.....I totally love your story and hope we get an update soon.
On with the smoochies!!!! :wtkiss
Belli Bear
icanseeyouareverytakenwiththisstoryihopeyouremembertobreathe. :lol Somewhere in your one-breath exclamation you said
tarawillso *get dizzy* loveheranyway
:hmm I think that may not be the case, Tara has this big hangup over lying and it's not the first time Willow has done it. In her mind, it means that it won't be the last time and she will be having huge doubts now.
~~~~~

Chris

doghouse

Yep yep. In the doghouse, the outhouse, the house of shame -- the whole she-bang. Timing can't suck even more because you're right, Tara just basically admitted to herself that she found someone to love. In real life, I have a feeling that many couples / potential couples will not be able to recover from this setback. The ball is very deeply in Willow's half of the court and it'll be a huge task for her to get Tara's trust back. I can't pretend that there will be one of those angsty no ending type of ending, because this is a Pens fic after all, but I think of putting myself in Tara's situation myself and I see it as a rather large-ish betrayal of trust and those are pretty darned fatal to a relationship.

Still, I do see some degree of hope, which you put it best:
everyone hurts everyone else sooner or later

Is Willow worth it? I think before this incident Tara has decided yes. Now Willow really needs to go through some radical self-examination and try to, using a bad video game metaphor, get her hit points back.

I'm just going to blame Faith generally.

:lol I wonder what Faith has done (in this fic) to deserve that sentiment? Oh wait, she's been a bitch all through. Tee hee.

excuse me a moment while I process the thought of Tara in a thong-backed leotard with camouflage patterns painted directly onto her bare thighs

:drool I think you'll have a whole army of kittens following that thought along with you.

~~~~~
Alex
Yeah, Willow hasn't endeared herself to anyone lately. She is a nice person, but has been behaving like an ass because she simply can't see beyond her little box of self-pity.
there's still a lot of badness to get through before we get there. And ironically, while I was dreading it at the start of this fic, I'm all for it now
*nods* It'll be unfair to Tara, and Willow herself, if all is forgotten in a flash and next chapter we see them smooching. I won't do that. Won't be fair now, right? :P
~~~~~

db

Willow must now eat crow. Lots of it ... and also apologize profusely,and also somehow convince Tara that she knows she was very, very dumb... and that she will *never* *ever* do that again.

Busted and in big trouble, that's where Willow is right now. Tara is very confused and really, she should be ... as she should be angry too.

Can Tara please forgive Willow?

At this moment, nothing Willow does or says will make things with Tara right. She outright lied, and made a relatively minor appointment clash blow up into a much bigger deal, and Tara shouldn't trust her again. Chris said that everyone hurts everyone else sooner or later, which is true but they haven't yet established trust or feelings towards each other that are deep enough to overcome this incident. Will I make them suffer more? I don't think I need to do that, because Willow has done it all by herself. In nano we talk about characters writing themselves and Willow's thoughtlessness was, I'm afraid to say, easy to write. Things will get better at the end, though there's a little way to go still. I hope when the reward comes it'll be worth the wait. :)

~~~~~
Dianneswillowtree
Hate being right? Heehee, it's better than being wrong. :P Willow is dumb and she will need all the tricks she can find to get Tara back.
~~~~~

simplyblue

you are cold and evil and heartless

>:) my work here is done. Willow did more than lie this time, she put herself in a position that it's virtually impossible for Tara to trust her ever again, and it's BIG. Oh, and hee about the cliffhanger, it was a good (and bad :P ) place to leave things, but this is how fics are updated here. You love it, really! :P

Willow has gone beyond being embarrassed by her geeky roots, she's let it completely blind her to everything Tara has done to show her how she (Tara) has no problems about the geekiness. When it comes down to basics, we have a situation where Willow's time was double booked, with some thought and open communication she could have figured it out and had her cake and ate it.

It's not the crime, it's the cover-up that'll get you.

Absolutely!

~~~~~
highlandlass25
:lol Thanks!
~~~~~

Auriam

Yep, Willow is in big trouble! :P No big resolution yet. Hang on!

~~~~~
Sally[b]
CAUGHT! Busted. Alas.
:lol ever so succinct, and so well put. Though I don't like to see anyone hurt, Willow needed to be hurt and to show how much she had hurt. Otherwise she would continue to think irrationally and actions begat reactions which in turn begat other actions. Your sympathy is well placed, because she is inexperienced with dating ... however she has friends. If she set up to go somewhere with Xander and then turn around to tell Andrew that she's doing something else, Andrew is hurt. I really wanted to portray her as not having thought too much about what she's doing and saying, she isn't manipulative or malicious. If this were a longer fic I'd delve deeper into this, but I think most readers have drawn similar conclusions.
Now the question in my mind is, will she and Tara work things out soon, like in the next weeks or months, or will they be separated for a long time and eventually find each other again? That's the question for me, because I don't see Tara forgiving Willow right away.
It'll be unfair on Tara if I make things a-okay too soon. Not that I want her to suffer, being treated with such disrespect by Willow. But if Willow just turned up on her doorstep next chapter and begged forgiveness and they smooch, I think I'll get a :smash from kittens. It till take time, but I might skip a whole bunch of time within one chapter heehee. :P Thanks, Sallypants.
~~~~~

[b]Ms Shoe

Hopefully Tara will think Willow is worth a bunch of second chances, not just the technical second chance that she's already wasted.

:lol @technical second chance, like dismissing a case due to technicalities. You are also right, that because this is a Pens fic, we are guaranteed a happy ending. But like I mentioned a couple of times in replies, I don't think it's fair if there was smoochies next chapter, however much readers may clamour for them. The issues that have surfaced -- Tara becoming emotionally invested in Willow, Willow not knowing what the hell she's doing and squandering Tara's affections -- will need time, and drastic-ish actions to become resolved.

Hope that your chair is as comfy as you say, cos there's a little bit more angst to come. :)

~~~~~
justin
I was almost expecting to hear some Eastenders style end of episode music playing.
:lmao now you've put the idea in my head, here's Eastenders.
The way things are, it's gone beyond Willow being a geek and whether or not she's accepted by Tara. She has done Tara an injustice, hurt her in a way that is more self-centred than geeky. I think the she's fallen as deep as she can possibly fall, and it will take a lot to turn Tara around. Milk tray works if they've built up sufficient trust, it'll take a little more (or may be a bigger box) this time. All will end well though, but not yet. :)
~~~~~

diamondforever

Yep, Willow is in deep boo-boo land, she will need some serious grovelling to get back to Tara's good books. :)

~~~~~
Debra
I hope your hand is better! 'tis not of the good, having a finger in a splint. I'm behind on Waiting fb again, but I'm getting caught up now that I've done this year's nano. Succinct is good, becauase you've summed it up perfectly. Willow is an idiot who needs a serious spanking from the angels of being not self-centered. Tara needs cuddles.
~~~~~

Shy One

Hi and welcome to the thread. No worries about feedback, I'm just glad you're enjoying the story. Though I did say this is fluff, there needs to be some angst, no? Otherwise Willow doesn't learn to treasure Tara. It'll take a while, or a grand gesture of sincerity, before Tara trusts Willow again. Thanks for reading. :)

~~~~~
willohand
:lol Evil me strikes again. You have to agree with me that if there's smoochies next chapter I'm not doing the characters justice, it's simply unrealistic and a cop-out. Things are bad now, and emotionally it's as bad as it'll get. Hold onto that restrainer bar.
Part 17
"So, you didn't have work?"
"I can explain."
Tara took the few remaining steps that closed the distance between her and Willow. Each step felt like she had heavy ankle manacles pulling her in the opposite direction. She took out the blue envelope that she had been clutching in her hand. "What's in this envelope? Something work related?'
"No, it's our tickets for the convention."
"You lied to me."
"I, I don't know what to say."
"What do you expect me to say?"
"I'm really sorry."
Tara looked around her and tried to take in the stall display, the banners for the con and the attire of the people milling around the area. "What's all this?"
"It's a comic convention, the most important one in the year."
"Is it important to you?"
"It's very-- but you're important too! I mean ..."
"You could have told me."
"I didn't think you'd understand."
"You didn't even try! And you decide that telling me you have to work is better than the truth?"
"It was a difficult choice."
"Why did you even put yourself into a situation where you had to choose? We could have talked about it and figured something out."
"I--"
Tara looked at Willow and could only see pain and hurt. Her chest suddenly felt very tight, she was overcome with the familiar feeling of needing to escape.
"I'm a fool. I thought you were different from the others. I, I don't think we should see each other anymore, Willow." And with that she walked away, tears in her eyes and her entire body shivering. It was as much as she could do to keep herself together.
"Tara ..." Willow pleaded.
Tara turned back and they looked at each other. Hurt and sadness were all that was left in her eyes. She blinked slowly, and walked away from Willow again. She didn't look back.
*****
[blockquote]
she hates me. she doesn't want to see me anymore
What happened? weren't you meeting her this weekend?
:wtf
she came to OW Con to bring me something I lost and saw me in full geek mode
you didn't tell her you were going to the con?
no. I made an excuse, said that I needed to work, can't meet her for Wicked
:wtf
you did what?
oh, Willow
a big fat lie. but then I left the tickets at her brother's restaurant and she brought them herself
this is not good, Willow
and she saw me and Xander and Andrew drooling over a Mina comic, she must hate me!
it was the newest edition with the skimpy costumes wasn't it? can you blame her for being outraged?
don't you think it's the fact that you lied about going to the con rather than you being a geek that made her mad?
may she's mad that you looking at those comics *and* the lie about work?
does it matter? won't fix anything
have you tried explaining it her?
she didn't want to listen, it's probably best if I never show my face in front of her again. I should have known, we live in different worlds, I have no business being involved with someone like her, I was delusional
so you're giving up, just like this? After *everything* you've gone through? Are you ready to go back to the bumbling geek who was fretting about which restaurant to take her?
what can I do?
apologize? fight for her? Tell her you're very sorry and she means so much to you that you promise you won't lie to her again?
sigh. I'm not sure I can. I'm not sure I can get over the hurt if she rejects me again
- snip -
[/blockquote]
*****
"You're a fucking idiot, Willow," Faith hissed through gritted teeth. The other people at the internet café glared at her but looked away when she defiantly stare back.
*****
"Why do people lie all the time?" Tara emptied half her glass with one gulp and reached to pour more out of the wine bottle. She frowned as she was only able to shake a few stray droplets out.
"Aren't you drinking a little too much?" Donnie placed his hand on hers to stop her from opening a fresh bottle.
"It's okay, I'm fine," Tara insisted.
"Really?" he raised his eyebrow quizzically. "Don't you think you're being too hard on her?"
"Lies. I can't forgive lies," Tara declared. She slid slowly down Donnie's couch, resting her head on the cushion, and was out like a wink.
Donnie knelt down next to his sister and straightened a loose strand of hair lovingly. He pull her feet up to the couch, took her shoes off and carefully covered her with a blanket.
*****
"Rosenberg, if you don't come here within five seconds, you're fired!" Willow's boss shouted at her from his office.
"Leave her alone. What do you want?" Faith. It was Faith who came to Willow's rescue.
Willow stared blankly at her screen. She hadn't heard a single word of that exchange.
*****
"She's playing with you, Tara," Anya said angrily.
"I can't help thinking that I reacted too strongly. It was only one small lie. It's not like she's been in prison or has three kids or anything," Tara sighed.
"Small lies lead to bigger lies. I told you she's not the one, she's a complete --"
"Anya, stop it."
"You stop it. You're going soft on her. Either forgive her and run back into her arms or if you're going to cut the chord, do it properly. You'll get hurt even more if you do things halfway."
Tara sighed again.
"Anyway, did you enjoy the musical on Saturday?" she tried to change the subject.
"Musical? I thought you gave the tickets to Cordy," Anya frowned.
"No, I gave them to Donnie. I'm not sure, he didn't mention anything. May be he gave them to someone else," Tara was puzzled.
*****
You will always run into the last person you want to see.
Faith had to physically haul Willow out of her chair at 6pm. Willow had gotten nothing done all day. Faith wondered if it was karma coming back at her for all the times that Willow covered for her.
"I'll work a million times harder tomorrow," Willow had the sense to say.
"A million times of nothing is still nothing," Faith growled.
"Sorry," Willow muttered.
"Forget it. I don't know why I'm doing this. I'm turning soft in my old age," Faith complained.
They followed the throng of office workers leaving the building and walked toward the train station.
"Faith!" Faith turned toward the source of the voice and broke out in a grin.
"Donnie, hi!" Faith greeted Donnie enthusiastically. Overly enthusiastically, if anyone noticed. Willow didn't. She was busy trying to burrow into a hole; Donnie was with Tara.
"What a coincidence," Donnie gave Faith a hug. Tara was just behind him and her face fell when she spotted Willow. It took all her effort not to turn around and walk away there and then.
"Isn't it?" Faith grinned.
"We're just going for dinner. Want to join?" Donnie smiled back at Faith.
"Donnie ..." Tara hesitated.
"You don't mind?" Faith asked.
"Of course not, it'll be my treat," Donnie said.
Meanwhile, Willow was inching away. "Um, why don't you guys go on ahead? I should head home," she made an excuse and started to walk off.
Faith's arm snaked out and grabbed hold of her elbow, not letting her move. "You're COMING too," she whispered fiercely in Willow's ear.
They made their way to a Vietnamese restaurant nearby. Faith and Donnie sat opposite each other and carried on a lively conversation. Willow and Tara, on the other hand, were shrouded in awkward silence.
They ordered an appetizer assortment to share. Tara reached for a piece of beef roll at the same time as Willow and their forks clashed.
"Sorry, please," Tara jerked her fork away and she indicated that Willow should take the piece of food.
"No, please. You were there first," Willow put her fork down on the table and refused.
"It's yours," Tara said.
"Really, I don't want it," Willow replied.
Neither reached for the item again. At the end it was Faith who took the last piece.
Their main course arrived shortly and at least two people were focusing on their plate too much.
"It's Tara's birthday soon," Donnie looked around at the silent table and announced.
Willow looked up in interest.
"Donnie!" Tara protested.
"When is it?" Faith asked.
"In two weeks' time, 16th," Donnie continued, ignoring Tara's glare. "I'm throwing a party for her at the restaurant, you should come."
Faith beamed. "Sure!" she replied.
"What about you, Willow?" Donnie turned to Willow.
Willow looked mortified. "Um, I ..." she stammered.
"Donnie, please. Don't make a big deal out of it," Tara almost wanted to clamp her hands over his mouth.
"Okay, okay," he raised his hands in mock defeat. "Talking about the restaurant, I need to go back. I left Wesley in charge, he's probably praying to his grandmother for my return." He excused himself. "Nice seeing you again, Faith. And you too, Willow."
"Oh, I remembered! I have to be someplace too. Later, dudes," Faith pushed her chair back, gathered her bag and was running after Donnie before either Willow or Tara had the chance to react.
They wouldn't meet each other's eyes at all. Willow was wringing her hands and Tara had to sit on hers to prevent them from shaking.
"Tara, let me apologize," Willow took a very deep breath and tried to address Tara. But she couldn't make eye contact, instead she focused on the tablecloth patterns.
Tara reached for a glass of water and took a slow drink before replying. "It doesn't matter anymore. I don't plan on seeing you again, Willow."
"Do you hate me so much?" Willow sobbed, feeling a huge lump in her throat.
"I don't hate you. I just ... I just can't."
"Did it mean anything? The time we spent together, Tara. It meant something?"
Again Tara took her time before answering. "It meant a lot. Too much. Which is why I can't ..." her voice fading to a whisper.
let's agree on san francisco
sounds good, I'll check out hotels
Hi will
Hi Willow
Willow!
Hey dude, thought you'd disappeared on us
hi everyone
wow you're late
Faith and I ran into *Tara* and her brother after work, we went to a restaurant
ouch, that must have been uncomfortable *hugs*
tell me about it, Donnie and Faith made some lame excuse and left us alone, I was shaking with panic
I've only read about heartbreak before, I never realized there's physical pain too
did you talk?
a little, I tried to bring up the thing about the fib, but she says it doesn't matter, she doesn't want to talk to me
not even to accept your apology?
I asked her if she hates me. She said no, and that being with me meant a lot. What should I do? I don't want to give up on her
then don't
fight fight fight. try to find another opportunity to meet up with her
it'll be her birthday in 2 weeks, Donnie invited me to her party
there you go! perfect
yes, but I don't think she'll want to see me there
do YOU want to see her?
I guess so
don't guess. Yes or No?
wow Car you're so large with the butch
I'm large with other things as well
*uberqueen has mental image of Car's ample rack
lol but to the matter at hand. Why don't you call her at midnight, Willow?
she'll think I'm rude, calling so late
it's her birthday!
my ex-gf called me on the dot of midnight too. sigh
tell her you want to meet her, to give her a birthday present
you did get her a present didn't you?
if not, get it asap
she'll probably say no
then you'll have to tap into that assertiveness you displayed way back when you rescued her from the drunk on the train
gods I don't know if I'll be able to do that again, it was a freak one-off incident
but it got you Tara. And yes you screwed up. But no it's not too late to try to get her back
I'll repeat: do you want to see her? do you want to get her back?
Car's butchiness is one thing, but in the end you need to decide for yourself. We'll always be here to support you, but the decision is yours
we're your personal cheerleaders whatever you decide
yes yes I want yes
good for you, Willow!
so now you need to find a way to tell her you're sorry, and tell her how you feel
oh, that's the hard part
you've come this far, take a deep breath and just do it, can you do it?
will you call her?
I think ... no, I will
if you don't, I'll squash you like a lowly insect
gulp, thanks for the pep talk, gang
anytime, pumpkin
I'll talk to y'all later
night Will
night
I understand why Tara is hurt and angry but she needs to see why Willow is affraid for her to see the geek in her. I have so much pain for both girls because I have felt it before myself I wish Tara would get on her computer make up a name and be able to see the willow she hides from her and maybe she will understand not the lies but willow herself. please put me out of it soon you wonderful writer.
