Here we go, ENJOY!!!!

Summary – Less than 8 hours until Willow must pass the test. The Guardian goes to the only other one who may be able to give Willow the strength to change the past.

Chapter 6 – Connections

The night was unseasonably warm as Willow walked into her bedroom, freshly showered and ready for sleep. She opened a window and felt the night air drift in and caress her face. She closed her eyes and sighed deeply. The Guardians words echoed in her head as she thought of Tara. ‘Have faith in your love, Willow. It’s never too late to get your hope back. If you open yourself up, I know you will feel Tara’s love for you.’ Did she really believe it was possible? ‘Rosenberg, it’s time to do something different. You have been living with grief and guilt for far too long now. If Tara had been trying to reach out to you from heaven, she never would have been able to get thru the walls you have raised. It’s time to put them down, even if the pain of remembering is unbearable. If there is even a chance…..you have to try.’ Willow told herself, and with her resolve face on, she finally, for the first time in a year, let herself be open completely. And as she laid her head onto the pillow, and closed her eyes, the tears flowed like rivers. As she opened her soul and focused her love for Tara, the energy that flowed forth, not from magic, but from the pure essence of love, reached out into the night, beyond the city streets, beyond the clouds and directly into heaven. And in heaven, the angels wept.

Tara awoke with a start. The sounds of crying like a trumpet in her ears. The grief and pain was overwhelming. But what was even more powerful, what sounded loud above all else, was the love. It was a love she would recognize anywhere. It was Willow.

“Willow, oh Willow, baby I can feel you.”

A flash of light interrupted her moment as the Guardian arrived. “I think she’s finally ready Tara. The test begins when she wakes up tomorrow, and I think it is time that you know everything. This may be difficult for you, and it took me some time to realize this, but you are an essential part of the trial that Willow must face.”

“Tell me,” Tara pleaded, “Tell me all of it.”

The Guardian explained, in painful detail what the redhead was to endure come morning. She left nothing out. There would be pain, and heartbreak. She also explained what would happen if Willow failed. Tara’s heart ached for her lover. The Guardian also told Tara about her own LifeBond, and the things she had done.

Tara gaped at the woman before her. “You and Willow, you have so much in common. Is that why it was you who came?”

“We have more in common than you know. And, yes, I think the elders somehow knew that I could be the only one to come. The test has only been given one other time in the history of the LifeBonded, and that test was given to me. Tara, you should know that I failed the test, and when I did, the Guardians gave me a choice, and a chance to redeem myself. The let me choose between walking the world for eternity, alone, or becoming a Guardian and helping others to not make the same mistakes that I did. I chose an eternity of service to others because it was the only choice I could make that held true to my own beloved.”

“S-so, you are the best chance that Willow has of passing this test?”

“No.” the Guardian said matter of fact, “You are.”

“But you said that no one could help her?”

“No one of the mortal plane. You are an ethereal creature. You are the energy and the essence of love and light. She is open to you now, and if you reach for her she will feel you, and if you call for her, she will answer. Go to her Tara. She will not see you but she will know you are with her. But remember, you must tell her nothing of the test or all is forfeit. Only send her your love so that she has faith, for she will carry that faith into tomorrow, into always.”

“Guardian? What’s your name?” Tara asked.

“Jessapha, but my friends call me Jess.” The Guardian smiled.

“Well, Jess, can I ask you one more question?”

“Of course. What do you wish to know?”

Tara paused a moment, “If Willow passes the test, will she remember?”

“Yes. You will both remember everything. You will live with the knowledge that you were given a second chance. And your love, and your LifeBond, will be stronger because of it. Now, go to her. Your Willow is waiting for you.”

“Thank you Jess.” With that, Tara closed her eyes, and followed Willow’s love, all the way home.

Willow slept peacefully, wrapped up in red sheets. Something stirred her as a barely noticeable ripple sent energy flowing into the bedroom. She opened her eyes, slowly bringing things into focus. She couldn’t see anything, but she could feel it. The air had changed. There was something, surrounding her. At first she thought it was magic, like Amy or someone had dosed her again. But then she felt it. It was unmistakable. Her tears returned with a vengeance, and she KNEW. She knew that finally, after all this time, what she finally felt, was Tara.

‘Willow? Willow baby, it’s ok baby. I’m here.’ Willow heard in her head.

Her body racked with sobs as she tried to speak. “Can’t b-b-breathe. Oh, my god, Tara?”

‘Yes, my love. My sweet Willow tree. Breathe baby, just breathe.’

Willow closed her eyes, and concentrated on slowing down her breathing, but nothing, at this moment, could slow down her heart as it felt as though it was going to burst forth from her chest.

“Am I dreaming? I mean I feel like I’m awake, but I could just be dreaming that I am awake and thinking I am dreaming of being awake, but maybe I’m really asleep and…”

‘That’s my girl. God how I’ve missed Willow babble. Baby, you are not dreaming. I promise you, this is very real. I would have come sooner, but….’

Willow stopped her, “I know, I…..couldn’t…..it …hurt too much. I couldn’t let anything in. I guess, when I shut out the world, I shut you out too. Baby? How come I can’t see you?”

‘I can’t take physical form darling, but, you can feel me can’t you?’

“Oh, yes! I do, baby, I do. It’s like when you used to walk into a room, when you were still, um, alive, and I would have my back turned, but I always knew you were there.” Willow looked down at her hands in her lap, “Tara, I’ve been so lost!”

‘I told you we could always find each other baby. No matter what, we will always find each other.’ As Tara spoke, she concentrated on sending every ounce of love she felt for this woman, her beloved, her LifeBonded. ‘Willow, baby, you have to listen to me now. There are some things I need to tell you.’

“Tara, wait. I have to tell you stuff first. The things that I did when you….”

‘I know Willow. I saw it all, and I love you, I could never stop loving you. You are my eternal, my always, my everything. I know that you lost hope, you lost faith in love, but it’s ok now, and you have to promise me, that whatever happens, no matter how bad things get, you must promise me that you will ALWAYS have faith in our love. Have faith that I will always be with you. When faced with the darkness, close your eyes and find the light, and I will be waiting there for you, until the end of time. You will never walk alone. Close your eyes Willow. Find me.’

Willow closed her eyes and thru her tears she saw a light. A light that shown blue and white and green and, oh god it was so beautiful, it was her Tara. She drew the light to her, and Tara sent her energy and wrapped it around the redhead like the warmest blanket in winter, pulling her into her essence. The air around Willow began to shimmer as her love took hold, drawing her in closer still. Willow wrapped her arms around the energy, finding some substance there. Not solid exactly, but like a warm cloud. She laid down into it as Tara closed her arms around her lover. She sent a tendril of energy, as a kiss to Willows face. And, as two became one, they wept.

“Tara?”

‘Yes, darling?’

“Stay with me.”

‘I will never leave you Willow. Our love, is forever.’

The Guardian watched over the lovers, knowing that in a few short hours, the test would begin. Willow would have to face this alone, but perhaps now she would take her love with her. Jess wanted so much for the witch to pass the test and for the bond to be restored. She wanted this for Willow, because she knew how it felt to exist eternally without her beloved. She wanted this for Tara, because her light shone brighter than any the Guardian had ever seen, and light like that, belonged to the world. And lastly she wanted it for herself, because somewhere she felt that this would be the very thing that would redeem her soul. ‘I will send you all the strength I have Willow. You have my word. And now you know that you will always have Tara. I just pray that it’s enough.’

Chapter 7 – The Test

It was that moment. That time of the morning where the night has ended but the day has not quite begun. The dark before the dawn. The most peaceful time in a 24 hour period. The birds are not yet awake and the sun is struggling to rise over a brand new day. Willow slept more peacefully than she has in a year. She slept still surrounded by her beloved’s essence. Tara looked down at her, and a silent tear rolled down her face. She knew what was too come and she ached for Willow. She thought silently to herself, as not to wake the sleeping redhead, ‘My love, it is almost time. I will be with you.’

‘Tara, it’s time to go.’, she heard behind her. ‘The elders are awaiting our departure from the mortal world. As soon as we leave the temporal fold will take effect.’

Tara turned to see the Guardian, bathed in light, reaching a hand out towards her. She knew that she couldn’t put it off any longer. It was time. She knew that it was all up to Willow now.

‘Guardian?’ Tara started, ‘W-will you bring me with you when you return to Willow?’

‘Yes my sister, you must be here. But you must not interfere. You have done all you can do. You must let me do my job now, and let Willow do hers. If your lover passes the test, your soul will return to its mortal vessel. You will return to her.’

Tara’s heart swelled at the thought of being in Willows embrace. Willows kiss. Willow hands. Willow’s heart. ‘Thank you Jess. Thank you for giving us this second chance.’

‘As much as I would love to take credit for it, it wasn’t me. The Guardian Elders and the Powers of the universe have foretold a great many things. The sanctity of the LifeBond is too important to the fate of the world. The purity of your love is entwined with the energies of all things. And something that essential always deserves a second chance. Now come Tara, the Elders await.’

Tara looked down at Willow one last time before departing. ‘Be strong my love, and remember what I told you. When faced with the darkness, close your eyes and look for the light. Look for me.’

With that, she took the Guardians hand and in a shimmer of light, they were gone.

Dreams. So many dreams. But the one dream that was finally a reality again, was wrapped up in the sheets next to her. Sleeping peacefully. Willow propped herself up on one elbow, and gazed down at her lover. Tara’s hair covered that favorite part of her back that Willow loved to kiss, right between each shoulder blade. They had barely gotten out of bed since Tara walked back into their bedroom. The moment that Willow had prayed for had finally come to be. She had her Tara back, and there was nothing that could ever tear them apart again. All was right with the world. Tara was home again, Warren and the others had been beaten by Buffy. Tara was home again. Willow smiled. She couldn’t take her eyes off of this woman lying beside her, just wanting to soak up the very essence that was, Tara. Her Tara. Finally, once again, her Tara.

“I can feel you looking at me, you know. I can always feel you.” Tara mumbled, her face half buried in the pillow. “I’m not going anywhere you know?”

Willow looked down at the bed. “I know, but I keep thinking that if I look away for just one moment, that you may not be here when I look back. It all still feels like a dream. Like I‘m gonna wake up and I’ll be all alone again.”

“You were never alone Will, even when I wasn’t here, I was always with you. And now that I am here again, I am never going to let you go again. I’ll never leave you again Willow. You’re my forever.”

Willow smiled. “My always, baby.” She leaned down and kissed the blonde, softly on the lips. “And since it’s way too early to get up, I was thinking, you know…maybe we could….” She trailed off, a not so innocent look on her face.

Tara gave her that sexy half-smile, “Again? Where DO you get your energy from Miss Rosenberg?”

“Hmmm? Well, Miss Maclay, all those months thinking about you…it builds up in a girl. We have a lot of catching up to do. And I’m just the girl to do the catching.” Willow gave her lover a wicked grin.

“Vixen.”

The sunlight was streaming in the window, as the lovers finally were able to tear themselves out of bed. They showered and started getting dressed, completely unaware that they were not alone in the room.

The Guardian and Tara watched the women, glowing, and totally in love, getting ready to face what they thought would be another beautiful day together.

‘This is hard to stand here knowing what is going to happen.’ Tara said to the Guardian. ‘I remember this, all of it.’

‘It’s almost time Tara. Are you ready?’

‘Yes. I’m ready. I love you Willow.’

Willow stopped putting on her jeans for a moment. “Tara? Did you say something?”

“What sweetie?”

Willow’s eyebrows crinkled for a moment. “I thought I heard….never mind. I think I am just having déjà vu from all the loving that this room has seen in the last 2 days.”

Tara smiled, “Yeah? Well, you better eat a good breakfast. You know, keep your strength up an all.”

Willow smiled and turned to finish getting dressed. She put on a pair of blue jeans and pulled a white shirt over her head.

“Hey. Clothes.” Willow joked.

Tara gave the redhead a sly grin “ Don’t get used to them.”

“Mmmm, yes ma’am.” Willow growled as she pulled Tara by her belt loop into her arms. She kissed her lover. A warm, sensual kiss, laced with promises of things to come. Willow thought, ‘ So much for clothes.’

‘Not long now.’ The Guardian said.

‘I know. God, how I hate this. To be here and I cant help her through this.’

‘Your love is the only thing that can help her now. She knows Tara, trust her.’

        ‘Willow, baby…oh god..’

“Mmmmm….Xander.”

A mock frown crossed the redheads face. “Not exactly the response I was fishing for.”

“No, he’s here.” Tara said as she moved closer to the window.

Willow smiled, “Xanders’ here? Think they’re making up?”

Tara turned, “I hope so.” She said, smiling. “That’s the best part.”

Willow beamed as she looked at her lover across the room. This moment was, perfect. This was the woman she would spend her life with. This woman was not merely her lover, or her partner. She was her life. She was a part of her very soul. She knew the face of love and all that is right with the world, was the face that gleamed back at her. The face that…..

TINK

‘Wha…….blood?’

Willow looked at her shirt, then back to Tara. Tara stood there for a moment, looking at Willow. Her face not getting it.

“Your shirt.” Tara said as she fell to the floor.

“Tara?” Willow rushed to her lover’s side, and brought the blond woman’s head to her chest. “Tara, baby? C’mon baby, get up. Please baby.” Willow pleaded.

The Guardian went to the witch, and slowly, gently wrapped her essence around her. The world shimmered for a moment as their essences connected and became one. The Guardian poured all of her energy into the embrace as Willow cradled her dying lover in her arms. ‘C’mon Willow. Push through it. Get to the other side. This is your chance to make it right. She will always be with you.’

Willow rocked back and forth, Tara’s body limp in her arms. “No, no, no, god no, Tara, c’mon baby. You have to get up Wake up baby.”

Willow could feel the energy build within her. She could taste the familiar flavor of magic on her lips. Crackling from her fingertips. She could sense the coming darkness. There would be no turning back this time. She willed every bit of magic from within her and started to……’Wait’ she hesitated, ‘ Somethings, wrong. This is…..wrong.’

Yes baby, that’s it. You don’t need magic. You have me.

Willow seethed with rage. It was too much. She looked down at Tara, in her arms. ‘She hated the darkness in me. Hated what the magic did to me. To us.’ The tears flowed down burning cheeks, as the darkness swelled with in her. Looking for an opening, a way out.

The Guardian held fast to the witch, but she could feel the power burning. ‘Turn is around my sister. Turn back to your grief, away from the dark. Remember what your LifeBonded said. Remember.’

Willow began to shake as the darkness began to boil over and…’Wait, what….a flash…of …something.’

‘Close your eyes Willow.’ She heard in her minds eye. ‘When faced with the darkness, close your eyes and find the light. Find me.’

Willow heard a siren outside, and the sound of footsteps and loud voices. She turned back to Tara, shaking violently, fighting the battle of her life. ‘I’m not strong enough.’

‘Yes, my darling, you are. I will always be with you. You just have to close your eyes and find me. I will always be there.’

Willow could feel the power crackling through her veins. The darkness was coming, it was right in front of her. Right inside her. She looked down at the woman that lay still in her arms, sought all the power she could gather and….

…..closed.her.eyes.

‘Yes, baby, that’s it. Find me. I’m right here!’

The Guardian held on, and held on, and felt something…..change.

Willow closed her eyes and in the distance in her minds eye, she saw….a….light. Yes, there is was, small, barely even there but, wait, it was getting closer, coming towards her. It was, familiar. It was…..TARA!!! I FOUND YOU!

“Yes my love. You found me. Didn’t I tell you that I would never leave you. It’s all ok now. It’s over.”

“Tara, baby. I-I remember….everything. You….died, and I, oh god , I tried to destroy it all, everyone, and……”

“Shhh, baby, its all over now. We have a second chance. Now open your eyes baby, and I will see you soon.”

Willow opened her eyes and looked down at the still unmoving body of her lover in her arms. Then, footsteps loud up the stairs. Dawns voice, “In there!!! I heard Willow screaming!!!” The paramedics burst into the bedroom and pulled the bleeding woman out of Willows arms and began to go to work on her.

“She’s not breathing!!! Check for a pulse!”

“Got it! Hang on…wait…I’ve got something, its faint but it’s there!!”

“Ok, lets get a line in and get her down to the bus.”

Willow looked on in horror as the men poked and prodded at her love. “Is she…is she gonna be…”

“She’s alive, but her pulse is weak. We’ve got to get her breathing on her own and we have to get her to the hospital. Is she your family?”

“She’s my everything.” Willow said as she looked at Tara. “ She’s my life.”

“Well, you better come to the hospital in the ambulance then with us. Gary!!! Get a stretcher up her and 2 units of O neg!!”

Willow stood up from the floor, and took a step back, letting the paramedics work.

‘It is done Willow. You have passed the test. You have redeemed your soul and restored the circle of your LifeBond.’

Willow looked up into the corner of the room to see the Guardian, who she knew as Jessie. “You?? Who…are you? Is she gonna be ok?”

“I am a Guardian and yes, Tara will be fine. And when she wakes up, she can tell you everything. You remember the rest, don’t you Willow?”

Willow closed her eyes for a moment, “Yes, I remember, I …lost her once…I got so lost too…but now…”

The Guardian looked up as if she were listening intently to something. After a moment she looked back to the redhead. “Willow, I have to go. The Elders have summoned me. Take care of yourself, and your LifeBond.”

“Wait! Will we….” The Guardian was gone before she could finish.

Willow followed the paramedics down to the ambulance and climbed in. Xander came to the back before they closed the doors. “Oh God Willow!! Not Tara, too? “

“What do you mean too?? Xander?”

“It’s Buffy…it’s…..it’s really bad Will.” Xander looked as if had been crying.

“Xander, don’t ask me to explain this, but, I thing it’s all gonna be ok. I just know it.”

“ I’m gonna ride in the ambulance with Buff, so I’ll see you there.”

As the paramedic closed the ambulance doors and drove off into the sundrenched morning towards the hospital, Willow knew that it really was going to be alright now.

Epilogue- (AKA Chapter 8) – Redemption

“So, ok, just so I’m understanding this. Jessie, the singer from the band at the Bronze, wasn’t actually human. She was some ethereal Guardian sent here to run the happy ending mojo on me?”

Tara smiled up at Willow from her hospital bed. “Happy ending mojo on ‘us’ sweetie. And, yes.” Tara proceeded to tell Willow all about the Guardians and what their purpose was in the mortal world. Willow could only stare at her, unbelieving, but believing all at the same time. Believing because the proof of Tara’s words, was Tara herself, lying here in front of her, alive.

“Baby, can I ask you something?” Willow asked tentatively.

“Anything sweetie.”

“Did you…I mean….if you did it’s ok….but….did you like it in heaven? I mean…are you sorry that you came back. I just remember how upset Buffy was, and how bad we all felt for ripping her out of heaven.” Willow looked at her lover, a little afraid of her answer.

Tara took both of Willows hands in her own and gazed into the beautiful green eyes of this woman. Her LifeBonded. “Willow, my sweet, sweet love, I could never be happier or more complete anywhere else but right here with you. Heaven was beautiful, but nothing compares to the way I feel in your arms. Jess told me that we were meant to share eternity together, and we couldn’t do that until the past was changed. I knew what you had to do, and I was with you the whole time. It was our love that brought me back, that made the bond we have, whole again. It wasn’t magic, or selfish intent, or anything like that. It was pure, and forever.” Tears flowed down the blonde witch’s face and she pulled Willow in close, breathing her in, as their cheeks met and Willows tears mingles with her own.

Willow pulled back a moment. “Happy tears?”

“The happiest.” Tara gave her a half smile.

Willow looked down at her hands, still entwined with Tara’s, and back at her lover. “ I was just thinking about Jessie. How she didn’t pass the test and was doomed to walk eternity without her LifeBonded by her side. I just wish that there was something we could have done. She did so much for us.”

Tara opened her mouth to speak, when a bright light filled the room.

“But you have helped me, dear witch. You both have.” The Guardian appeared on the other side of Tara’s bed. “ You have helped me more than you know.”

“Jess!!!” Tara exclaimed. “I was wondering if we would ever see you again.”

“I am everywhere Tara. I will always be a part of both of you, as you will be a part of me.” The Guardian said.

Willow walked towards the ethereal being. “Can I, I mean, if you could get all solid for a minute, I really wanna give you a hug?”

Jessie laughed. “Mortals…” And with that she solidified and received the redheads’ hug with open arms. “Between you and Buffy, I’m really feeling the love today. But I think your friend Xander was waiting for me to eviscerate him or something. He must’ve been out of his mind to leave Anyanka at the altar.”

Tara looked confused. “Buffy? Is she ok?”

“OH!! Oh, Tara, I almost forgot to tell you about Buffy. She’s fine. The bullet didn’t hit any major organs, and what with her super slayer healing, she will be out of here long before you, missy.” Willow gave Tara a look that said ‘and you will stay in this hospital until the doctors say you are ok to leave, and when you get home it’s gonna be all bed rest and pampering for you’.

Tara reached out for Willow and pulled her close, wrapping an arm around the redheads waist. They both looked at Jessie. “Jess? What did you mean when you said that we helped you?”

A broad smile crossed the Guardians face. “There is someone that I want you both to meet.” She lifted her head and called out. “Darling, you can come in now!” A second bright light filled the room as a woman materialized beside the Guardian. She was beautiful, with alabaster skin and flowing locks of fiery red hair. “Willow, Tara, I would like you to meet Kerowyn, my LifeBonded.”

Both Willow and Tara stared, in shock at the sight of these two women. The way they looked at each other, there was no denying the love that flowed forth from them.

Tara stammered, “But, how? I mean….I thought…..you said…..huh?”

Jess and Kerry looked at each other, and Jess pulled the other woman close, kissing her lightly on the head. “The Elders work in ways that even the Guardians don’t understand. You see, I lost my Kerowyn one thousand years to the day that you lost your Tara. Yes, it’s true that when the test was given to me, I failed. But, unbeknownst to me the Elders had a plan. Your LifeBond was foretold centuries ago. Your love, Tara’s death, your fall into darkness, the return of your LifeBond, and your redemption. Through your redemption, I achieved my own. I had no knowledge of this, because my actions as a Guardian must always be selfless, but the end result was that my love will walk by my side until the end of time.” Tears streamed down the Guardians face as she beheld the beauty that is Kerowyn.

“I thought ethereal beings didn’t cry?” Tara asked.

Kerowyn answered. “The power of love transcends even the rules of heaven.”

Willow looked at Tara, squeezing her hand. “Yes, it does.” She turned back towards Jess and Kerry. “So, where do you go from here?”

“Well, you bring up an interesting question. We have been given a choice, both of us.”

Kerowyn gave Jess what looked to Willow like resolve face. “You know how I feel about it. I mean, the ethereal world is all clouds and flowers and pretty music, but, I have been observing these mortals for a millennia, and I have been craving, what do they call it, Double Mocha Latte??? And clothes…oh my god, the choices….and colors….”

Tara laughed. “We really should introduce her to Buffy.”

Willow smiled, “So, let me take a wild guess here, me being all good with quizzes and such, you have to decide whether to remain a Guardian, or become…..mortal again??”

“That pretty much covers it.” Jess said, looking at her beloved. “Kerry has her mind made up, and if history is any indication, the decision has already been made.” She smiled. “Besides, the only place I want to be is with her.”

“So, where will you go? What will you do?” Willow asked.

“Well, Sunnydale seems like a nice town. That is, if you like Demons and Vampires. But just because I wont be a Guardian anymore doesn’t mean I can’t still help people.”

Tara chimed in, “Well, as people in need of help go, Sunnydale has more than it’s share.”

“OH! A-and, you could sing at the Bronze for work, of start another band. Oh, unless that was all, glamour mojo when you were all undercover and stuff?” Willow babbled.

Kerowyn answered that question. “No, that was real. She used to serenade me every night. I think I missed that above everything.”

“Well, there you have it. It’s settled. Sunnydale it is.”

The four women kept talking well into the afternoon, their common bonds leading them towards the inevitable reward of friendship. And as the Elders gazed down upon their charges, a song rolled through the heavens, telling the universe that on this day, at this moment, all was right with the world.

The End

Authors note : I hope you have enjoyed this fic. I left the end a little open ended, just in case I find the time and energy to write a sequel.

Peace

That was a lovely ending. I'm so glad that Jess found her LifeBond too!

I truly hope you will find time for a sequel - I quite like Jess and think she and Kerry would be good friends for our girls!
