I pre-ordered the DVD at Amazon.com so I wouldn't have to wait.

Why do Amber's films take a long time to release??

I rented the DVD from my local store, watched it this afternoon, and have posted a review on my blog. There may be what some would consider very, very vague spoilers. I don't talk about any specific plot points that you wouldn't get from the back of the DVD case, but I do discuss my reaction to the way things end up.

http://varkentine.blogspot.com/2007/07/just-be.html

Some of you may want to wait until you've seen it, to you, I'll say: If you just turn the sound down and watch Amber...you're going to be very, very happy.

If you turn the sound up, the film as a whole is more problematic (IMO), but Amber is never less than a standout. Oh, and one of the DVD extras is footage of her acceptance speech for the award she won from that gay film festival, and one of the groups she thanks is:

"the hot lesbians [who] have a special place in my heart."

I have my copy of RYTTB wending its way to me through TLA Video, the same distributors who brought "Latter Days" to us, the fans of Amber.

BTW:

IIRC from the store this afternoon, the DVD case says the feature commentary is by the director. Actually it's a cast-and-crew commentary including Amber.

Thought you'd want to know...

Devoted Amberholic that I am, I must mention that not only is she on the DVD cover but her face adorns the DVD itself, cool or what?
Copies of the RYTTB dvd should be sent to producers and other film industry executives with some degree of influence in casting to show them the reality of what innate talent is rather than just sitting behind a desk with their Harvard MBA.
Amber is that rare actress who can speak volumes without saying a single word; she would have been a hell of a silent film actress to rival Louise Brooks, even.
Her body language is so expressive and emotive. The slightest and near imperceptible movements run the gamut of emotion that you could watch the movie with the sound off and still follow everything she goes through.
Why would you want to, though? That's just crazy talk because then you would miss hearing her mellifluous voice wrap itself around the spicy talk.
Which leads me to Amber and her sultry sexy body strutting around and showing some skin for the camera, unsettling as it may be for us Willow and Tara fans to see her having sex with Nathan.
Amber's naked back has a hallowed place in my heart and loins.

Well, I'm gonna put on my helmet and Kevlar vest and tell you all what I thought about this movie.

The only word I can think of is weak. The story was weak and the characters couldn't decide what they wanted or what they wanted to be. I know someone is going to jump in and say that that was the point, but I'm not referring to the story. I'm talking about the way they were written. The best example of what I'm trying to say is Amber's character, Maggie. She had some really great lines, but the writer was trying to play her as sexually free and open-minded, but when push came to shove, she was just another weak female character who could only envision her life if it contained a husband. Ewww. Not very forward thinking in my book. I loved the character of Nathan because his own self-loathing made him almost detestable, and I actually found him to be the most "real" character in the film. Cole Williams rocked in the part.

Now, here's where I get flamed, so please read it all and be gentle with me. I love Amber. The woman simply makes me weak in the knees. But in this film, I didn't like her. And when I was talking to my partner and another friend about it later, we all agreed that the problem is that Amber is a truly wonderful character actor, full of the personality and quirks required to do that job. I can't see her as a leading lady. I want to, but I just can't. She totally rocks in everything I've ever seen her do on television, but it doesn't translate as well on the big screen. Amber is a classic renaissance gal. Her filmmaking is great (Lovers, Liars, and Lunatics is a much better film than RYTTB), she's a talented writer, and a great second lead. I would much rather see her succeed in these endeavors than to sit back and wait for someone to try to turn her into Julia Roberts. It's not who she is (IMHO), and it's not what I think she's good at. And since she's so good at all the other things, why do we think she's just one big break away from becoming a star? She's already a star in my book, just not a romantic lead.

I will say that there is wonderful screencap fodder in this movie, for those of you who think like I do, but I'm really glad I didn't purchase the movie. It's just not worth it.

I have not seen the film in question, but I agree with dline regarding the evaluation of AB's prospects.

Like dline, I have never seen AB as a leading lady or superstar. This has nothing to do with her skills as an actress (which are outstanding) or how nice a person she is (very). Rather, it is a matter of type. She is magnificent as a character actor, supporting actor, or "second lead". This is not a bad thing: she will achieve a goal that few actors reach--she will be constantly working and in-demand as an actress throughout her career.

Unlike AB, AH has the potential to be a real star--I see her career following a sort of "Myrna Loy Path" (for those here old enough to remember this great star ;-) ), provided that she chooses the right projects (which she has, so far, done).

And I have so many good ideas for both of them...but that silly ol' Spielberg and Scorsese never return my calls.

(sorry, I can't resist a good straight line)
