Well, I'm gonna put on my helmet and Kevlar vest and tell you all what I thought about this movie.
The only word I can think of is weak. The story was weak and the characters couldn't decide what they wanted or what they wanted to be. I know someone is going to jump in and say that that was the point, but I'm not referring to the story. I'm talking about the way they were written. The best example of what I'm trying to say is Amber's character, Maggie. She had some really great lines, but the writer was trying to play her as sexually free and open-minded, but when push came to shove, she was just another weak female character who could only envision her life if it contained a husband. Ewww. Not very forward thinking in my book. I loved the character of Nathan because his own self-loathing made him almost detestable, and I actually found him to be the most "real" character in the film. Cole Williams rocked in the part.
Now, here's where I get flamed, so please read it all and be gentle with me. I love Amber. The woman simply makes me weak in the knees. But in this film, I didn't like her. And when I was talking to my partner and another friend about it later, we all agreed that the problem is that Amber is a truly wonderful character actor, full of the personality and quirks required to do that job. I can't see her as a leading lady. I want to, but I just can't. She totally rocks in everything I've ever seen her do on television, but it doesn't translate as well on the big screen. Amber is a classic renaissance gal. Her filmmaking is great (Lovers, Liars, and Lunatics is a much better film than RYTTB), she's a talented writer, and a great second lead. I would much rather see her succeed in these endeavors than to sit back and wait for someone to try to turn her into Julia Roberts. It's not who she is (IMHO), and it's not what I think she's good at. And since she's so good at all the other things, why do we think she's just one big break away from becoming a star? She's already a star in my book, just not a romantic lead.
I will say that there is wonderful screencap fodder in this movie, for those of you who think like I do, but I'm really glad I didn't purchase the movie. It's just not worth it.
