Wilkins is such a jerk!
"Your signature is everywhere," Willow said flatly.

I kinda and kinda didnt see that one coming.
"Tell me about the Suite."

As you know, I have been waiting for this. So glad Tara could finally trust Willow with this.
"If you ever say a single word to anyone about what happened, I will go after you. No one fights me, and those who do never get away with it. I expect ... no, I demand complete submission. Either obey me unconditionally or die. You are someone special, Tara. Now go."

Makes sense that she holds such power over him. She could destroy his image in a heartbeat. If nothing would happen to her beforehand.
Why do I think Faith is responsible for the beating? (I thought this the second Tara got beaten up.)
Very nice that they went back to Sunnydale!
Tara thought she saw the possessive glint in Anya's eyes, having Xander nearby meant she could keep an eye on him 24/7.

And I guess Lily got a taste of Faith huh?
So many updates, you spoil us!!! :pinky

Hey Watty,

Great update! Thanks :)

Childhood stuff is so difficult to deal with - poor Tara. It's hard sometimes to remember that it's all over and you've survived. I'm glad she has Will to remind her. I hope she can forgive her aunt and focus on the goodness in her present life (that would be the aforementioned Ms Rosenberg of course!).

Cheers, S

Watty -

Gracious. You've gone and updated a bajillion chapters here!

Thank you, and I am glad to see this story back on the board, and I owe you lots and lots of feedback. I have set aside some time tomorrow to re-read and write my thoughts... so watch this space for more words!

db

ETA: Ok, so I am back with some feedback!

First let me just say this - it's a *lot* easier to leave feedback on a chapter by chapter basis. I like reading all the chapters at once, it's good stuff and it sucks me in... but it makes for less in depth db-patented magic 8-ball feedbacky goodness.

Ok. Here's what I have to say -- I *knew* that Wilkins was a sneaky wesly no good slimeball of a man! He's been hovering over these two like a big nebulous black cloud of doom... and I peg him as the big ol' bad in this story.

The threat he made to Willow in the office *shiver*. He'll make good on it too, if he can... and I think Willow knows this in her heart of hearts. I think that maybe Tara has some waning reservations (that are all but gone at the point you finished).

Things I took note of: The tea with Kate. Lovely imagery - I felt like it was a hint at something; an analogy or metaphor or something, but I couldn't puzzle it out. I just wanted to watch it for myself ... oh, and taste it. Mmmmm. But damn Tara for being defensive... Kate could be an excellent ally. Would you mind tapping Willow and Tara on the shoulder and reminding them of this, please. Ooooh, and Buffy is an FBI agent - more good ally-ness.

The pivotal chapter for me in this chunk was 23 - it confronted all of the major hurdles -- the first conflict in their sweet new romance, the confessing of concerns re: Wilkins and the Suite and trust. I just think the plot progression in that chapter was brilliant, and the breaking glass was the perfect metephor. I loved Willow's mental progression -- her discription fo powerful dark forces being at worrk, and even her restraint about probing further. I was also impressed with her candidness with Tara "your signature is everywhere" -- eep. Tara is being set up. I *knew* it! Wilkins is so sneaky.

Which brings me to ch. 24.

Yay for Tara telling Willow her story about the suite. I feel like her verbalizing what happened steals its power a bit. Ug. Wilkins! Raping rapist bastard sonofab*tch! I wonder how much of this signatory stuff is a bit of revenge on Tara for getting the better of him that night. What happened? I don't understand why the creep stopped. I am glad and grateful that he did, but what made him? I suspect there's some power to be gained from deciphering what happened there... whatever it is, they should use it. He's a creep and I have no doubt that he will go after them!

So.

Wilkins makes veiled threats to Willow, Tara confesses about the suite and together they figure out its a set up so Tara thinks its a good idea to go waltzing in for some espionage? Ack! Noooooooooo! I would bet a million bajillion pennies that the assaulter is Faith! I hope she rots in jail... or something really heavy with hard edges gets dropped on her foot.

Lily -- how sweet is she? I suspect Tara sees a bit of herself in that girl... I just hope Wilkins doesn't use that against her :(.

26....

Watty pants - the phone thing as a device with Willow on the other end was brilliant. I could totally see agitated Willow hollering into the phone growing more agitated by the moment and fraught with worry and anxiety. I can see the furrowed brow and the pale face and the nervous hand movements! Brilliant, jut brilliant!

I am glad that Tara suspects Faith too... it is, of course, Faith (right). I hope she gets hers...

but sunnydale?!

That's odd. I wonder why Tara wants to go back?

27.

mmmmm. naughty watty.

:-D

I heard a rumor that you didn't write that sort of thing, but I am very glad to take note of the fact that you have, and did and it was both sweet and hot.

:kdevil

Plus the Willow cooking and the kissing of bruises was sweet, and the Xander oggling was funny as heck!

I am going to leave off here for now --I'll leave feedback for the next chapter (or is it two?) in my next post.

I feel like this story h as reached a real turning point... and I am excited to see what develops!

I've placed my magic 8 ball in my pocket for now -- but I am going to take it out in my nest post!!!

Hope you all are having a great time on the slopes!

Zampsa1975 -- thanks! :lol at
Please forward the following message to Buffy before she takes on Faith: "Use of unnessary violence has been approved."

what can I say? Faith is on the side of the black hats in this story. And yes, the cliffhanger is creepy. Now we enter the more plot-driven part of this story.

doobiedoo -- :blush thank you very much for delurking, and your encouragement. I'm glad you like this story, I will continue till the end.

WillowRulez -- oh yes Wilkins is a majordomo jerk. There's nothing bad he doesn't do. There is a lot of history between him and Tara, which I made a decision to only allude to. It's not that kind of story. All I wanted to show was that Tara has a lot of what she thinks are skeletons in her closet that she is (?)ashamed of, and need a lot of prompting in order to open up to Willow. She needed to completely and utterly trust Willow.

shiraz -- Tara certainly has a bad childhood, and not a pleasant early adulthood. Even two random scenes have such a shadowy hold on her, and make her the person she is now.

FoxInTheSnow -- thanks!

db -- woot! bajillion yep. Heh, I think your magic 8-ball got a lot of things right. You pegged Wilkins (and Faith) very early on, and he is a big badass baddie here. His threats are real, and there's no doubt he is capable of carrying them out, though what damage exactly will, say, the video do is suspect.

I'm glad you liked both a) the interlude with Kate and b) the falling glass. Kate still has a role to play, but is more diminished going forward. It's good to have allies in the law enforcement business. Can you see Buffy as a FBI agent? I totally can.

Re: Tara's revelation about the Suite. I think we all have a good idea what goes on there, but I didn't want to make any sort of ethical statement. It is what it is. All I wanted was to show Tara's dark history and how far she's come for her to reveal this to Willow. The revelation about her signatures by Willow was a strong catalyst for her to start doubting what her boss is up to. It's become more personal for her -- it's obvious he doesn't hold her as important as she does him.

Tara being all adventure spy girl, I think they really had no choice. It's pretty obvious the assailant is Faith, and it will be dealt with eventually. Thanks for the comment about your approval of using Willow's phone as a point of view. It was a visual scene for me.

Re: Sunnydale. Closure, that's it.

Re: smut. Yeah, I don't really write or read smut much nowadays, but I'm quite happy I was able to include that little bit.

We had a great time on the slopes! Today we went downtown and P was a fabulous tour guide. I'm enjoying myself, yes ma'am. Love to the family!

Debra -- awwww about RL. Hope all is well with Rachel, Lucky and Asher.

Part 29

Not wanting to attract unwanted attention, Tara called Kendra to discreetly ask her to check on Lily. Kendra reported back that the younger girl hadn't come into work. It was not unusual, given that many of the hostesses and dancers were casual workers. Tara didn't want to raise any alarm and simply asked Kendra to let their bosses know if no one had heard from Lily in another 24 hours.

The email from Lily was puzzling.

sistersunshine = vampires

It was a message, a warning or, since Lily mentioned an account, most likely access credentials, but they couldn't figure out what it was.

"You kept her voicemail?" Willow asked.

"Absolutely," Tara confirmed.

Willow's face grew serious. "We need to save it, it's evidence."

"Isn't it already saved by my service, or on the phone?" Tara asked curiously.

"Yes but we have no control over what the phone company does with it. And it's not saved on your phone," Willow got busy with the laptop. "You don't often get to see Geek!Willow at work," a grin was accompanied by a wink. "I'm gonna dial your voicemail on voip, stream, save and upload it to my server. We can access it anywhere with an internet connection."

Tara watched in fascination as Willow dialed her cell number on her laptop, then using another application turned Lily's voicemail into an audio file. Listening to Lily's message sent a stab of worry down her spine and it was disconcerting to hear the girl's voice cut off abruptly at the end. What were you trying to tell me, Lily? I have to find you, you're my responsibility, I won't let you down.

When Willow was done, Tara kissed her soundly and pinched her arm.

"Ow! What did you do that for?" Willow was pleased at the kiss but was not expecting the painful pinch. She rubbed the reddened area and proceeded to pout, though not very convincingly.

Tara pat Willow on the arm, making the pain go away. "You're too good to be true, Willow Rosenberg. I just want to make sure you're not some sort of Mary Sue."

Willow laughed. "Oh Baby, I'm not perfect, not by a long way. If I were, I wouldn't have let you get away all those years ago."

"Well, you're still my hero," Tara said. Turning back to Lily's plight, "I think we should go back to New York, try to find Lily ourselves."

Willow nodded. "That's what I was thinking too. We can't do much over here and I have a bad feeling about it."

"I feel responsible for her. She may have been nosing around and got discovered," Tara shivered at the thought.

"There are a thousand reasons, don't start blaming yourself."

Tara took a deep breath. "I'll try. I know I shouldn't. The sooner we get back the better. Will you change our flights while I'll start packing?" Tara said over her shoulder as she made her way upstairs.

*****

Twenty-four hours after receiving the message from Lily, Tara and Willow were back at the club. The girl hadn't been seen, although no one was overly worried at that point.

"Having domestic problems already? Which one of you can't get it up?" Faith planted herself in a chair and stuck her feet up on the next chair, her usual cocky smirk even more pronounced. "Wait, don't tell me. I don't give a shit."

I can kill her. Now, where she stands.

Tara's grip on Willow's hand tightened and it took an enormous amount of self-control for her not to sweep Faith's feet off the chair and wipe the smugness off the girl's face with a well-timed backhand slap.

Willow took one step closer to Tara, strategically placing herself between her lover and her alleged attacker. "We had a wonderful time. Thanks for asking, Faith."

"Yeah whatever, Red," Faith shrugged and turned her attention to the TV, bored with not having the last word.

They made their way to the office. Willow was officially not supposed to go there, but she argued that there was no point their being stealthy. They might as well be open about their sneaking.

Lily was still missing, and a quick chat with Kendra confirmed that. Tara found Lily's home address in the personnel database — she didn't live at a boarding house like many others, the address was in Brooklyn.

They discussed their next steps on their way across town. If they came up blank, and if Lily hadn't shown up by the time the club opened that night, they would call the police.

They found themselves staring at a building with peeling paint on the outside walls and a huge sign that proclaimed Jesus was indeed their one and only savior. The ground floor was taken up by a convenience store that had two layers of steel netting covering its storefront and swing door. At the side of the building was a narrow doorway leading to the apartments upstairs.

"We're looking for Lily," Willow pressed the intercom button underneath a handwritten label for "Steele" and announced officiously into the speaker when it was answered.

"Not here," the indistinct voice slurred back.

"Do you know when she'll be back?" Willow continued.

"No."

"Can we come in, leave her a message?"

"I ain't no secretary," the voice whined.

Willow deliberately kept her finger on the intercom. "Ah well. I suppose we'll have to tell the family no one was there to claim the money."

She and Tara turned to walk slowly away, the corner of their eyes peeled on the front door.

"Who said what about money?" A disheveled man in his twenties yanked opened the door with a bang and staggered out.

Willow turned around and affected her most pompous messenger manner. "We have a message for Lily Steele from her family's lawyer regarding an inheritance. That's all I can say without speaking with Ms Steele herself."

The man tried to straighten up but had to utilize the support of the wall. "You can tell me. I'll tell her."

"And you are?"

"Ricky. Ricky Thomas. Her boyfriend," he declared.

Tara's eyebrow shot up questioningly. Lily hadn't mentioned any current romantic attachments. "Mr Thomas, we need to get in touch with her. Do you know how we can contact her?"

"What's it to me?"

Willow hid her smirk and asked in a low voice. "Perhaps it's better if we discussed this inside?"

This snapped Ricky into action. He winked dramatically at the duo as if they were co-conspirators and led them up to the apartment. Or rather, he stumbled up while they walked carefully, cringing at every creak of the stair.

It was a tiny one bedroom apartment, and Willow scrunched up her nose at the smell of alcohol, stale food and dirty clothes that hit her. Tara looked like she had seen a ghost and Willow's heart cried out for her lover — it was Aunt Marie's all over again.

"I'd offer you a drink, but I don't know where it is," Ricky flopped on the sofa with the ease of someone who spent a lot of time on there. Willow quickly searched around the room to find two rusty and rickety dining chairs. Looked around the living room she noted that aside from empty beer bottles and greasy pizza cartons there wasn't much else. No photographs, no decorations to give a clue about its occupants.

She decided not to wait for Ricky to give them the information. "Mr Thomas. Ricky, when was the last time you saw Lily?"

Ricky seemed to be having a hard time staying awake. "I dunno. May be a couple of days ago."

"Do you know where she could have gone?"

"No. She never tells me."

"What about work?"

"I dunno where she works."

Willow's eyes met Tara's. "You don't seem to know a lot about her, considering you're her boyfriend."

Ricky had the sense to look embarrassed. "Uh, well. We were. She broke up with me. Right after she got out of the loser preacher's church."

Tara nodded. "But she still let you crash here."

"Yeah, a real ball of sunshine she is. Say, is she gonna be rich? She better come back soon, rent's due this week," Ricky hiccuped.

He looked like he was about to pass out, so Willow took advantage of his weakened state. "Ricky, is it okay if my associate and I looked around? Perhaps we can find some clue as to where she is?"

He was too out of it to question them. "Knock yourselves out." And promptly fell asleep.

"Shall we?" Willow asked Tara.

A quick search revealed very little. They were about to let themselves out when Ricky started singing loudly in his sleep.

"Ain't no sunshine when she's gone. It's not warm when she's away." His singing voice was like the catcall of a bagpipe filled with gravel.

Willow was about to shut the door when Tara pulled her back. "Listen," she said.

Willow made a face. "Do I have to?"

"Ain't no sunshine when she's gone. And she's always gone too long anytime she goes away." The squawking continued.

Tara hushed her.

"Ain't no sister sunshine she is. Fuck you, Lily," Ricky muttered drunkenly.

"Sister Sunshine," Tara whispered. "The email."

They let themselves out.

"Didn't Lily say she was a member of a religious cult before she got into being a vampire? And wasn't Sister Sunshine her cult name?" Willow said excitedly.

"It must be a clue to this account she mentioned. But what account is she talking about?" Tara fretted.

"I think it's time we did what innocent people will do. Tell your boss and call the police," Willow answered.

They agreed that Tara would go back to work and meet Willow back at her apartment.

*****

Tara had two pieces of astounding news for Willow when she returned.

Wilkins told her there was no need to worry about Lily. According to him, she called in sick with a stomach bug and would be resting at home for a few days. Tara knew that to be a lie since Lily wasn't home, but didn't want to reveal her hand by calling him on it.

Secondly, she was in the kitchen when Luke, one of Wilkins' personal bodyguards, brought in an uneaten tray of food for disposal. Upon questioning, the kitchen staff told her that a tray of food had been prepared twice a day for the last two days and Luke had taken it away. Each time, it came back untouched. It was not fancy food, more like something a hospital patient would be served.

Or a prisoner.

Someone was being held prisoner somewhere in the building. Unfortunately it was probably Lily. Fortunately it was probably Lily. It meant she was alive.

Watty,
How intriguing. So Tara and Willow fancy themselves private investigators now? I'm not saying that they're doing anything wrong but they're being a bit imprudent. I honestly think they should have called Kate to talk to her at some point. I mean Tara got the shit beat out of her the last time she tried to investigate on her own. I think it's called a warning for a reason! I'm not saying that violence should win but I would think it would have some effect. Anyway, I don't mean to rag on them but I'm definitely worried about them.

Thanks for the update.

It really seems that Lily is alive. (Did I mention it before? I so love the vampire reference you managed to bring into the story.) That's a good thing. Isn't it? But I'm so hoping Tara won't lurk around much longer. They should involve a professional like that cop. Maybe Willow's a computer genius but she can't cover everything and Tara had her warning. The bad guys must suspect something.

And I really don't see how they can manage to get Tara out of this. Her signature is all over the papers according to Willow. What I like best in your story (among other things)? For once Faith isn't the good guy in FB. At least it seems she is nearly as bad as Wilkins.

It's a pity Tara didn't get to meet her aunt and the rest of the family. But I doubt this to be over. In fact I think, maybe we will see them a bit later.

Thanks for the update like always. And I hope you are not to pissed with us. Sorry, for not leaving FB before. I try to be a better reader.

Ok then.

*dusts off magic 8-ball o' speculation*

heh heh heh.

I like the way your mind works Watty pants.

So... no one is home for Tara to have closure with. Where did Aunt Marie and scum bag Donny go anyway? It's wierd, and must feel very... anticlimactic to Tara. Plus, then Lily (who I get a strong feeling is someone Tara really relates to on a personal level) leaves an unfinished message that was, of course, interrupted by some nebulous badness.

I don't know if Magic 8-Ball o' speculation (M8BoS) is right - but I feel like Tara is going to *need* to pursue this rescue - not just to vindicate herself but *also* to, by rescuing Lily,in a sense, rescue herself?

I think I might have over stretched my interpretation muscles on that one.

It's just that when Tara goes into Lily's apartment and it's all like a flashback for her, my gut just wrenched for her and I *so* wanted them to find Lily... I dunno, I felt like Tara *needed* to find her or save her from something that could so easily have happened to herself.

Thank goodness there are possible (kind of sort of) hints that she might be ok. I am holding onto glimpses of hope here! b

Oooo. Lily's crypt-o message! M8BoS thinks it is some sort of passwordy thing to Wilkins' bank acount or some other account. Ugh. That man is a slimy weasle. I have no idea how they are going to set things strait with Faith but Wilkins? Sheesh. Willow has all kinds of access to his money or at least his shady companies and their holdings -- they should kick him where it hurts (in his pocketbook).

...and ok, I like the whole "save Lily" thing, and I get it, but why oh *why* are they not contacting the authorities? Is it because they feel like they need to clear Tara's name before hand? 'cos I think they are maybe a wee bit over their heads in the whole detective department. Kate? Buffy? Kate/Buffy tag team?

*thinks naughty thoughts*

:blush

Great to see Lamplight continuing. Responses, roughly in order of chapters:

Willow pushing Tara on what happened between her and Wilkins... it says a lot about how their relationship has strengthened that she'd dare to do that. I mean, she must have had the spectre hovering over her of how, when they were younger, she felt as if she pushed Tara away - it can't have been easy to press on, in spite of those memories.

Poor Tara! I just knew something was going to go wrong. I liked how you wrote the attack scene - not that Tara was attacked, but the mix of desperation and detachment in the way she was processing what was happening to her. I've never really been in that situation, but it seemed to strike a chord - as if there was a part of her that was still in 'oh, it won't happen to me' mode, in spite of the evidence, and ironically allowed her to defend herself with some intelligence, because that part of her, by way of denial, wasn't freaking out because she was being beat up.

I do not like this incarnation of Faith. You tend towards nasty Faiths, now that I recall Geek Love Faith... This Faith definitely needs taking down a peg or two. In fact, more pegs should be installed, so that she can be taken down them. (If indeed it was her - I've got this little part of myself that's wondering if the whole thing is a set-up, but it seems unlikely.)

And as if there were any doubt that being with Tara is good for Willow, could we imagine, pre-Tara (in the present day) Willow taking time off work as she did to go back to Sunnydale with Tara? Anya was a hoot, I like how you wrote her, and the little side-story of Xander feeling like he'd stayed in the 'small pond', no matter how well he'd done for himself in it.

Anticlimactic for Tara, not to be able to face her past - but it felt realistic, too. No matter how much Tara felt she needed to face the past, the world had moved on, and didn't rearrange itself just to accomodate her need for closure. Perhaps that's something she'll never have by confronting her former 'family' directly, and she'll just have to come to terms with it as best she can.

And (if I may gloat for a second) I totally picked the scent of freshly-baked bread being the pure memory of uncomplicated, innocent times. Okay, not a very difficult story point to pick, but I usually get these things wrong, so I'll enjoy this one.

I'm worried by how much Willow and Tara are taking on themselves - especially Tara, is it that she has this unfinished personal business that makes her try to be the one taking down Wilkins? Maybe she just feels the need to confront something, and isn't quite realising the danger she's putting herself in as a result.

Thanks for the updates (many, many updates), and may there be many more :wtkiss

Karinna -- :D

Zampsa1975 -- oh yes, creepiness is rising. >:)

WillowRulez -- :) our heroines definitely to the rescue! But how? Read on ...

LittleBit -- :bigwave welcome back and thank you.

Debra -- you're right to be worried, they should go to the authorities. But it won't surprise you that they'll try to take things into their own hands for the right or wrong reasons. Hopefully they don't come across as reckless: Tara in particular has her reasons. Thanks! :)

sacinema -- heh, I'm glad you picked up on the vampire / Lily reference. Yes Lily is alive but now how to rescue her? They should go to the cops ... you'll see how it pans out next chapter. As for Tara's signature, they're a bunch of shell companies that up to now haven't done anything illegal, so she's safe ... but for how long? :)

db -- hey you. So Tara went back to Sunnydale for closure. But her family has gone. I've tried to make it realistic because it happens in real life; just because she wanted closure doesn't mean it's conveniently there waiting for her.

You're absolutely right, and you didn't over-stretch your interpretation muscles (where, pray are those anyway? Oh wait, don't answer. :D). Tara sees a lot of herself / her experience in Lily. She feels sort of personally responsible, which in a way will dictate her subsequent actions to thwart Wilkins' plans. Why are they not contacting the authorities? They should ... wait and see.

p.s. did I ever mentioned I so love your feedback? I do.

Chris -- thanks for the long fb. :D Their relationship has come a long way, and the happenings in the last few chapters show that the uncertain stage is behind them. Thanks for the words about the attack scene -- I wanted to portray violence without getting too violent, you know?
You tend towards nasty Faiths

:lol now that I think of it, I do. Disclaimer: I like Faith, I really do. But not in a googly-eyed way. I prefer the S3 incarnation, because when she's on the side of the baddies, she seemed to have more purpose. Or may be it's the whole icky May-December thing with the mayor. It's more interesting from a writing perspective than whiny-redemption Faith, especially on AtS.

You're right about how anti-climatic it is for Tara, not having closure. And you're also right it happens in RL -- closure doesn't come in convenient packages that fit our schedules. The most important thing is for Tara to forget about closure ... if she finds Aunt Marie later, then good; but if not, it's not the end of days.

Like many readers have pointed out, they should go immediately to the authorities. But they have their reasons, I hope they don't come across as reckless. More in the next chapter.

Title: Lamplight
Author: watty (hiddenwatson[at]gmail[dot]com)
Distribution: Chris and Susan have pre-approval. Anyone else please ask for my permission first.
Rating: R to NC-17
Disclaimer: BtVS characters, concepts and dialogue belong to Mutant Enemy, Fox, The WB, UPN and others.
Summary: Contemporary AU. Where demons wear human faces. Two lives drifted apart, can they find their missing half?
Notes: This will be long and angsty. It also changes direction more than once. I had planned for it to go in a certain direction, I didn't know it would go that far. Sometimes, stories have a mind of their own.

Trivia: Eliza Dushku is listed as a notable Albanian-American on wikipedia. Yes really.

Part 30

"We need to take him down," Tara growled as she paced a groove in her apartment's expensive wooden flooring with her pacing.

"He's too powerful. Next time, we may not be lucky to get away with just a beating," Willow pointed out.

Tara threw her hands up. "We have to do something. He needs to be exposed as the criminal that he is," she fumed. "Not to mention we have to rescue Lily."

Willow was just as angry, and worried. But she had to be the voice of reason -- Wilkins had threatened her verbally, and hurt Tara physically. But unlike Tara he had not betrayed her trust and loyalty. She knew the sort of person he was when her dealings with him started, but Tara was brought up to believe that he was a good person. That Tara was livid was not unexpected. "I know, Baby. But we need to be careful. We don't have physical strength, or even strength in numbers. We have to be smart."

"I know, I know." Tara's pacing picked up.

Willow looked at the pitiful amount of evidence they had. It wasn't enough to pinpoint anything on the ex-mayor. "What's the source of his power?" she asked, thinking aloud.

"Huh?"

"His power."

"Money," Tara said simply.

Willow's brilliant mind kicked into fifth gear. "Then we follow the money. He must have a weakness somewhere we can exploit."

"Aside from the shell companies that he oh so conveniently has me as fall-guy?" Tara said bitterly.

"No. More than that. We need to break things down. Start with the two million dollar and wires. Why Albania? That has to be the key." Willow was in full thinking mode now. "We need to do research. He's dirty, I can feel it in my bones. Insider trading is too obvious, he's not doing it through me. Gambling ... that's a possibility. He probably has bent cops and politicians lined up in his pocket. But we're back to the why Albania question. Terrorism? Oh, gods. Money laundering, he's up to his neck in money--"

"You're talking to yourself, hon," Tara interrupted.

Willow looked up sheepishly. "Yeah," she smiled.

"I'll leave you to it," Tara said.

Willow's mind had already re-started and she was furiously making notes.

Tara listened to Willow's pen scratching on the yellow legal pad while she did her own thinking.

"Faith," she said suddenly.

"Yes. Major skanky bitch. Hate her," Willow looked up from her work.

Tara stopped pacing. "Albania. She has connections there. Brags about being related to big landowners, presidents and generals. We ignore her because no one knows anything about Albania and because it's, you know, her."

"Possibly. He may be using her connections," Willow mused. "What does it have to do with Lily?"

"I think she saw or heard something," Tara paused. Then took a deep breath. "Will, we need help. If this is international fraud, we don't have the resources."

Willow tapped her pen in thought. "What about Detective Lockley?"

Tara shook her head. "I don't know. She doesn't seem to have the jurisdiction."

"Let's call Buffy," Willow said. "I trust her to keep this quiet. She'll know what to do."

*****

"Wow. Tara. Wow." Buffy couldn't stop grinning at Tara.

Willow rolled her eyes. "Are you sure you're not related to Xander in some way?" she asked her friend.

The Special Agent-in-training laughed. "He wishes. I just can't believe it. You two. Wow."

Willow waved her hand in front of Buffy's awestruck face. "Cut it out, Buffy. We're together. Very happily together. You get first dibs who you want to be bridesmaid for, as long as it's me. Move along." She could joke with Buffy. Buffy was the first person she told about her feelings toward Tara, and her pillar of support when all she felt was depression.

"Right. What's the sitch?" Buffy's game face came on and she was all business.

They had taken the shuttle down to Washington DC to meet Buffy, who looked trim and fit. Buffy was staying at dorms in Quantico and, upon hearing Willow's brief summary, had arranged for them to meet in the offices of a security consultant friend of hers. It was Saturday, when only a skeleton staff was in resident. "Besides, they're very professional. No one will ask any questions," she added.

Willow and Tara took turns recounting the events and suspicions. Buffy sat quietly listening, stopping them to ask frequent questions.

"I pulled everything I could find," Buffy said when they finished, taking out a thick file marked 'Confidential' and flipping it open for their benefit. "Being a politician it's easy for a student agent to retrieve his information, for the purpose of a term paper of course," she winked. "There are a lot of allegations but nothing solid that the bureau can use to build a case for arrest. There are annotations in his file that the money trail will probably be the most enlightening, but short of subpoenaing a foreign government or going through his bank accounts ..." she spread her hands.

"I have some luck in that department," Willow added. "Focusing on a specific amount, I tracked it in and out of his account. It came in through an auction house in New York for the sale of several paintings. It went out to a bunch of accounts in Albania, like I told you."

"How come your bank hasn't reported this?" Buffy frowned.

Willow hung her head in self-reproach. "He was wiring to charities and he is a registered foreign investor in Albania. I should have put my foot down for additional due diligence, but I was over-ruled by my boss. I know, not an excuse, but there wasn't enough wrong-doing other than to file a standard SAR."

"This seems to be his MO, and why he keeps slipping under the radar," Buffy pointed out.

Willow was relieved not to have been told off by her friend. "There's more. A few payments were made to individuals. I don't recognize the names, may be you can."

Buffy read the list of names Willow handed over. "Not familiar. But I can run these through the NCIC database."

"Can you do that safely?" Tara asked.

Buffy nodded. "Yep, it's routine. I'll also see what I can do with this auction house and these Albanian accounts." She looked at her watch. "Got to go now, meet me back here tomorrow morning?"

"I wish I can help you look," Willow fidgeted.

Buffy took one look at her two anxious friends. Dark circles and frown lines. Not good. "Why don't you try to see if you can dig up some info on that particular auction. Find out who the dealer was, what was sold. It should be on the internet."

Tara smiled gratefully at Buffy, knowing that she had given the duo a time-consuming task to defray their nerves. They spent the rest of the day researching. Dinner was at their hotel and they retired to their room early. Even their lovemaking was overshadowed by anxiety and it was quick and stilted. Afterwards all they had left was to cuddle close and fall into a fitful sleep.

*****

"Dmitri Balthazar. Damn, this is big," Buffy said as she strode into the meeting room next morning. "Oooh, doughnuts. You have jelly?"

Willow and Tara were already there, having brought breakfast. Buffy helped herself to the calorie-ridden pastry while her two friends read the file she brought in.

"How big?" Tara asked.

"Art dealer. Shady. Suspicion for fraud and smuggling but only one conviction for passing a bad check," Buffy said between bites.

"And the same one who handled that sale," Willow leaved through the research and found the relevant pages.

"Yep. So why is he representing a no-talent artist, why is Richard Wilkins buying and selling paintings from the same artist and why are so many other people wanting to buy them?" Buffy pointed to several color print-outs.

Tara looked at printed versions of the paintings that formed a large part of the group that had changed hands for $2 million. She wasn't an artist herself but had enough appreciation of fine art to realize those were bad works of art. Spots and splodges of paint on plain backgrounds had more in common with a bad home decoration job than something one would put in an art gallery.

"He will say it's part of his being an all-round philanthropist," Tara said.

"So this explains the incoming funds. But not the outgoing ones to Albania," Willow reiterated. She knew that the Albanian angle was significant, but she couldn't put a finger on why.

"Some of those names on your list are suspected to have connections to the Russian mafia, and one is a front for a European clearing house for stolen art," Buffy said.

They were stunned into silence. Stolen art was big business. They were in over their heads.

"I thought we'd catch him for some irregular accounting or insider trading; we report him to the SEC and he gets to be the new Martha Stewart. But art theft? Russian mafia?" Willow shook her head in disbelief.

"Everything seems to be pointing to an art angle," Buffy remarked. "Let's say he's trafficking in stolen artwork through his Albanian contacts. Balthazar helps him find buyers. He ships them hidden in a consignment of cheap paintings."

"We don't have any proof," Tara added, for the hundredth time.

"Not enough to go to the authorities. The bureau won't be interested," Buffy agreed.

Willow was staring into space, tapping her pen and deep in thought. Buffy and Tara exchanged a look and waited for the redhead's brain to churn out its conclusion.

Willow turned to Tara. "How long has he been interesting in the arts? I know when I asked him about this amount he gave me some spiel about investing in the arts being the newest trend."

"He's always been a collector, even when he was mayor. You may remember how he likes supporting local communities. He loves getting his picture in the papers with sick children sitting on his lap," Tara said.

Willow took the copies of the paintings and stared at them intently.

"Wesley Wyndam-Pryce. Never heard of him," she mused. "Posh name. Lives in Greenwich. Must be loaded. Do you think we should check him out? Pretend to be journalists for one of the art magazines. Ask for an interview."

"That might work," Buffy said slowly. "But be careful, okay? If he's behind the attack on Tara and your friend's disappearance, he's dangerous. I'll help you out as much as I can. Call me, whatever time it is."

Willow nodded. They hugged each other as they said their good-byes. "We can't afford to make any mistakes. We'll be careful."

DIBS!

now I have a lot to catch up with! lol

Reading now

~°~
feedback:

Wow! A lot happened in these chapters!!

I will try to say things in the order but I am not sure of the order... I wanted to feedback right away but I don't know why I didn't have access to the bord. Anyway...

I already had doubts about Wilkins being the murderer of the first victim... Not himself of course. Faith I suppose.

I wasn't expecting the minor trafic... Well you didn't say trafic but you get what I mean? I mean it is right in this story and all. But I don't know. I wasn't expecting it. I was focused on the financial things. :) Well done ^^

Then there was the all threatening thing and all... I was surprised Willow didn't talk earlier to Tara. But what a bastard! Having his dirty thing under Tara's name. His dirty money...
If you have nobody in your fic to make him pay, you can count on me! (kidding ^^)

And Faith beating Tara. Tara being hurt! How dare she? How dare you to write this! Lol well well... I don't know why she is still silencious about this. I mean they talked to Buffy but at this chapter I didn't know... so I wondered why doesn't she talk with Kate. Off record you know?
I mean I know Kate would surely like to be in a cop mode and all official then, but it is not her juridiction so she cans only advice them...

There a lot to say about all the chapters. I was stuck already on this story but now I want to see what is coming next. Especially with Lily. Already 2 days without food (the plates were untouched if I understood right, weren't they?)

Tara coming back in Sunnydale. Wow.

Oh and thank you so much to have explain to us what happened to Tara back in Sunnydale 6 years ago. With Wilkins. I still am curious about her "inheritage" thing there was when she took a train and all though.

Ok this all thing isn't very ordered, but... it is how things come in my mad mind. :)

Thanks so much for all the updates!
I was so curious to see what would happen after the few I had read two weeks ago. But I couldn't go very long on the internet... so I had to wait. It was worth of it. So much things!

Thanks again.

I am in my basket waiting the next chapter. :)

Hey!

So I just read everything from the beginning to where we are right now. I must say, this is a kickass piece of writing. I am enthralled, truly, and I can't wait to hear more. Also, you probably wrote one of my all-time favorite paragraphs/dialogue/whatever:

"Remember our house with the big yard and cats and dogs and horses and fish, and big bedrooms and a big kitchen that will always have flowers and a fireplace in the living room where we can toast marshmallows?"

"That was a million years ago."

"What happened to us?"

There wasn't an answer to that. Sometime during the last six years, they each made their fortune. But in that process they had lost their souls.

Please, continue writing, for my own sanity. :peace

That's what we love about our Willow :smash
Eliza & Albania: Do really think Wikipedia is a good source :p? But yeah, doesnt she even have the Albanian eagle (?) tattooed on her back or something?
Hey, Buffy returns! Finally she can do something good :pinky
Art theft huh? Weird. Thought there would be something more evil to it, kinda relieved it isnt though.

Hey Watty,
I'm apologies all over but I'm still reading and enjoying. My work is a totally different animal these days and home is quite busy as you can probably imagine. That said... I'm so glad that they decided to get Buffy involved. Buffy the agent. She might be good at that. The plots definitely seems to thicken there and then it gets even thicker. Faith would seem to be a very bad guy here which doesn't make me all hugs and puppies but I can buy it.

Great update and sorry for not more fb from me. Deb

Oh yurgh. Watty!

They're working me to death!! I have just finished a 72 hr work week and have had no time for feedback! I'm really sorry -- I swear I'll do better next chapter!

So... they've brought Buffy into the loop. Yay! I like her advice... adn magic 8 ball is squeeling over being right over that... and the plan of action re: getting Wilkins in the wallet (or at least following his stinky money trail).

Albania. Changes of hands. Art collection. Hmmm. It makes one ponder about things like cover ups for drug traffic or money laundering fake art deals or something sneaking and underhanded that (*hopes real hard that any traffic that takes place doesn't involve women or children*)

God wilkins is a slimey bastard!

Great update, and thank you very much for your nice comment about my feedback. You hadn't said so before, but I thought maybe so and anyway, it was real nice to hear. :blush

Julia -- :bigwave thanks for the long fb! Come to think of it, there's a lot of crime in the last few chapters -- either actual crime, past crimes or threatened crime -- such a lot is stacked against our heroines. Lily is a side addition yes, a character that Tara strongly identifies with hence the strong need to rescue her. More crime and Lily to come, stay tuned.

Zampsa1975 -- well, Buffy and the FBI can't help that much without evidence of wrong-doing. She can help with resources and advice. Thanks for reading! :)

WillWolf -- hi there. Enthralled? :blush thank you. Most of this story will be taken up with the "thriller" part of "romantic-thriller" but yes, there's a lot of how they find each other and the lost innocence of their childhood too. Thanks. :)

WillowRulez -- I keep throwing us in strange directions don't I? We're entering the world of art crimes next. I had the Albania angle mapped out before I found out about ED's Albanian heritage, it worked out fine.
Greenwich, New York I assume?

Funny you should ask that :P it's addressed in the very first paragraph of the next chapter.

Debra -- hey, don't worry about fb, with crazy work and home life, I'm just glad to know that you're staying above water! Buffy and the FBI can't really do much in terms of actual investigation, I guess there has to be a crime committed. Tara getting beaten up is outside of their jurisdiction I believe. But Buffy is there for advice and providing resources that non-law enforcement citizens don't have.
Faith would seem to be a very bad guy here which doesn't make me all hugs and puppies but I can buy it.

Oh yes, you and I have very different way of portraying Faith don't we? I'm not sure if I've read a "Buffy in the FBI" story, especially with a Faith who is a certified badass ... ah if I were a B/F shipper. Eeeep I 'm getting off-topic. :P Take care and thanks for leaving a comment.

db -- 72 hour week? :spin
Albania. Changes of hands. Art collection. Hmmm. It makes one ponder about things like cover ups for drug traffic or money laundering fake art deals or something sneaking and underhanded that (*hopes real hard that any traffic that takes place doesn't involve women or children*)

Oh yes. Follow the money to the pot of gold (or black tar in the case of Wilkins) at the end of the rainbow. No, there will not be any trafficking of drugs, women or children in this fic. I'm sticking strictly to white collar crime .... well okay, there's Tara getting beaten up and Lily getting abducted and some violence from goons but you know what I mean.

How's home-sweet-home?

Very jetlagged. Haven't been this bad for a long time. I'm thinking with a week of bad sleep hours, one night I'll just crash and :sleep for 16 hours.

Part 31

Greenwich, Conn. shares its name with a trendy neighborhood in Manhattan, the location of the Royal Observatory in London and a smattering of small towns throughout English speaking countries. It is one of the most affluent communities in the United States, being a short commute from New York, and having launched an aggressive campaign to attract businesses through subsidies and low taxation. It boasts several well known schools as well as notable residents, many of whom are CEOs of large corporations or celebrities.

The Greenwich Art Society was founded in the 1920s, an offshoot of the Cos Cob Art Colony of American Impressionists who lived in the area during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Early evening found Wesley Wyndam-Pryce outside 299 Greenwich Avenue, adjusting his tie and taking several deep breaths before entering the building that housed the Society. He was one of the guests of honor for an exhibition of nature photography by a Greenwich-based photographer, whose name he tried to recall but kept slipping his mind. He was glad the exhibition was on photography, not art; he knew next to nothing about the technical aspects of painting and people always wanted to discuss it with him.

Ever since moving the States four years ago, Wesley's star had been on the rise. The streets of London were full of dunces with a double-barreled name, minor public school education and nothing much else. His father had repeatedly threatened to cut him off unless he found himself a 'real' job -- failed artist was not a job in Sir Roger's book.

Wesley wisely bypassed the cynicism of New York when he arrived stateside. Instead he settled in the Anglophilic communities of New England where for the first time in his life, people actually seemed to be in awe of his name and couldn't get enough of his accent. He taught ESL for recent immigrants and found himself doing voiceovers for public service announcements. Someone mistook him for a minor British aristocrat and he never took the trouble to correct the error. It soon got to the point when he himself fancied himself a titled gent, which he alluded to when he opened his eponymous English language school in downtown Boston.

During one cocktail party when he was waxing lyrical on the merits of real tennis (a sport he had read about but was pretending to have played since childhood), he met Richard Wilkins III. Something about the jovial man with the permanent cheery disposition gave him the willies, but when the man started flattering him he quickly swept aside his reservations. Mr Wilkins, upon learning that he was an artist, immediately requested a private viewing. The ex-mayor of Sunnydale loved his paintings and encouraged Wesley to give up day-to-day operations of his school and concentrate on his art; he guaranteed Wesley buyers for his work.

Wesley couldn't paint fast enough. Soon there were hordes of buyers clamoring for a Wyndam-Pryce original. At first, critics trashed his work -- unoriginal, pedestrian and eyesore were words branded about; but such critics would suddenly find themselves fired from their jobs or victim of a debilitating, though carefully non-fatal, accident. Soon, criticism dried out and his paintings were being auctioned for four-, sometimes five-figure sums. Mr Wilkins and his partner Mr Balthazar got a healthy cut of the proceeds, but there was always enough money for Wesley to spend. They even provided him with a fabulous four bedroom house in Greenwich, together with studio and his own media room.

The trade-off was he had to show his face at the local art scene occasionally. He never minded that, the folks at the GAS were friendly enough, consisting mainly of amateurs with more enthusiasm than earth-shattering talent. He was looking forward to the free wine and perhaps an appearance by a celebrity or tycoon or two.

"Mr Wyndam-Pryce?" His thoughts were rudely interrupted by one of those GAS people. Until he looked at the source of the voice and almost fell down. A young redhead with keen green eyes was looking at him eagerly. She was easily the most beautiful creature he had ever seen.

Beautiful Creature frowned and cleared her throat. Ooops. "Ah, yes. This is he," he said pompously.

"I'm Dani Rosenby from Pepper magazine and this is my associate Tamara Livingstone. We were wondering if we could speak to you for a few minutes." The redhead stepped aside and introduced her associate -- good mother of god, Wesley thought to himself as he nearly wet his pants at the sight of another angel, this one a blonde with the sweetest smile. He shook hands with both and made a mental note to not wash his hands that night. Not until he was in his bedroom and taken care of his, ah, nightly business.

"Of course," he squeaked, his voice going up one whole octave.

Dani Rosenby spoke again. Oh! Her voice! "We're sorry to approach you directly. Usually we work through agents, but --"

"-- don't have one," Wesley interrupted.

"Ah, I see," Ms Rosenby frowned. She must think I'm a wanker. "In which case let me make you an offer you can't refuse," she smiled enigmatically. Oh! Her smile! "An interview with Pepper. Two, may be three-page profile. If our editor shows sufficient interest, may be even the cover."

Wesley couldn't believe his ears. Front page coverage! It didn't matter that he had never heard of Pepper, he never read art magazines because he didn't understand the articles. "You want to do an interview? With me?" he blubbered, looking between the two.

Beautiful Creature flashed a smile at him that made him spurt. "Both of us. We'd like to schedule it as soon as possible, perhaps sometime," she paused and said in a low, seductive voice, "this week?"

He tried to maintain a semblance of sophistication by not blurting out that he was free tonight, tomorrow and every single night in the foreseeable future. "How about tomorrow? You can have the whole day."

He was still staring at Beautiful Creature when the blonde angel piped up. "That will be great. Shall we come to your house? Around 1pm?"

He gave them his address and reluctantly tore himself away from their attention. He fell asleep that night, a stupid smile on his face as at the fantasized image of himself and Ms Rosenby in wedding attire.

Wesley's house was located on the curve of a quiet tree-lined cul-de sac, the type of street where it took ten minutes to walk to the next house.

He answered as soon as Willow rang the bell, opening the door and grinning at them like an over-excited guard dog waiting for his owner's return.

"Mr Wyndam-Pryce," Willow greeted him, noting his dazed expression and the drool.

"Thanks for having us," Tara added.

He stepped aside and ushered them in. "Oh yes, pleasure. Please come in."

He led them through a wide foyer, pass the large but unutilized kitchen and to the conservatory. The french doors and ceiling-high windows allowed full sunlight inside. Large pots containing indoor plants occupied the corners and the floor was covered with a paint-scorched cloth. In the middle of the studio were several easels, some covered and some supporting works-in-progress. Brushes, pots of paint, empty frames and blank canvases were scattered everywhere.

Willow walked around, as if appraising the working area. "Very nice," she nodded.

Wesley audibly gulped. "W-would you like something to drink?" he stammered.

"Water would be good," Willow answered. "Ms Livingstone?"

"Water for me too," Tara nodded.

Wesley came back with water and they stood in a circle like candles on a birthday cake, waiting for someone to start the conversation.

"So," they all said at once.

Jittery laughter.

Willow was first to recover. "Nice house, Mr Wyndam-Pryce. Your bio says you live in a 280 year old former textile mill cottage in Rhode Island. This is no cottage, in my limited experience as a realtor."

He shuffled his feet. "The cottage sounds more, um, romantic. Yesterday, did you mention cover article?"

Neither Ms Rosenby nor Ms Livingstone elaborated on that. Instead Willow got down to business. "Let's do this informally. Tell us about yourself. How you come to the US. Who inspired you. What are the secrets of your success."

There was nothing Wesley Wyndam-Pryce liked more than to talk about himself. Over the next few hours he entertained them with exaggerated tales of his adventures. It was all Willow and Tara could do to not snigger at some of his 'achievements'. According to him, he won a scholarship to the top art school in London, had his first exhibition at the Royal Academy while still at college, and was in line for a Turner Prize. America was lucky that he deigned to move here, where his brilliance continued.

At their request he showed them some of the finished paintings stacked at one side of the studio. They were all of the same style -- random paint splattered on different colored backgrounds. The patterns wouldn't have been out of place on the walls of a paintball arena.

"You definitely set a great example to aspiring artists. The perfect story for our readers. I mean, how often do we get to stand among the epitome of the American Dream," Willow said with a straight face, pretending to examine one painting in detail.

Wesley looked like he was about to spontaneously combust.

"We understand that you have a generous sponsor and benefactor," Tara added, moving to a 'masterpiece' that seemed to be the work of blind monkeys.

Wesley preened even more. "Yes, Mr Wilkins' tremendous patronage has freed me! I can paint whatever I want, however I want. He even supplies me with canvases!"

Both Willow and Tara stopped and looked quizzically at him. "Canvases?"

Wesley shrugged. "I have to paint to order. He says he has a thing about control and specific dimensions. So he gives me canvases in various shapes and sizes and I, uh, do my thing."

"Well, every man has his kinks, right?" Willow winked. Wesley whimpered. Tara didn't know whether to laugh out loud at Wesley's very obvious crush on Willow or to kiss Willow senseless in front of the man to stake her claim.

She distracted herself by picking up a blank canvas. It was already neatly stretched and primed for another Wyndam-Pryce original. She felt around the cotton material and examined how it fit inside the wooden stretcher. Willow and Wesley were trading coy remarks but Tara interrupted to wordlessly show the prepared canvas to the redhead.

"Does he supply you with all your canvases?" she asked.

"Not all. But usually before an auction he gives me a few specific ones. For some reason those always fetch the highest price."

They exchanged a knowing look. "So you're working on the next auction?" Tara continued.

"I'm almost finished. There's one in a couple of weeks' time at Travers & Son. Would you like to see them?" he asked in the manner of a child before show-and-tell.

They agreed enthusiastically. After staying another hour and politely declining the offer of dinner, they bade good-bye to a clearly besotted Wesley Wyndam-Pryce.

Hey Watty,
What a hysterically funny update. Your depiction of WWP is just so ridiculous. He's the type of bloke who thinks he is so cool but who everyone calls a wanker when he leaves the room. Yes? I love the little hints about his rise to fame and his personal glitches. Of course he crushes on Willow and Tara both. That depiction is both adorable and disgusting.

How interesting about the canvases. Something is quite fishy I would say.

Shout-outs: Dani = Waiting for Dani, Rosenby = Willow's last name in Leave it to Giles.

Well done.

omigosh!

a) Wesley is a perve and you are a frikkin *genious* for putting him in this role -- I giggled straight through my reading and it was all because of him!

b) hmmmm. very very *very* suspicious:

Wesley preened even more. "Yes, Mr Wilkins' tremendous patronage has freed me! I can paint whatever I want, however I want. He even supplies me with canvases!"

Both Willow and Tara stopped and looked quizzically at him. "Canvases?"

Wesley shrugged. "I have to paint to order. He says he has a thing about control and specific dimensions. So he gives me canvases in various shapes and sizes and I, uh, do my thing."

Magic 8 ball o speculation is beginning to lean more heavily in the direction of counterfeit art or art smuggling or something naughty to do with Weasly Wilkins and Wesley (:-D)

c) Willow and Tara as the object of Wesley's affections was funny and a bit disturbing and also a hoot. Wesley's imagining Willow as future Ms. Pompous. *giggle*

d) They are *so* getting closer to the source -- I am just worried about when Wilkins finds out :(

e) Where did Wilkins and Lily and Faith dissapear off to anyway?

great update watty pants :love

Hey watty, I’m here as well, enjoying this story every week even if I have been so utterly, suckily bad at fbing and letting you know how much I appreciate you writing it. I don’t think it’s selfish at all to want a little acknowledgment for your efforts. You’re among the best writers to contribute regularly in Pens and you’re entitled to many, many pats on the back from the folks you’re making happy, so please let me add my thanks to you, majorly late as it is. The fact is, the one thing that’s been keeping me checking on the goings-on at Pens is the weekly Lamplight fix.

Being an angst junkie, I have to say I've enjoyed the second section the most so far, when they meet each other again in NYC. The damage we can do to ourselves and each other when we’re young and insecure is incredible. But I can well imagine how Tara, having no real home practically speaking, would think she had no other option but to do as she did. She probably rationalized to herself that she was doing Willow a favor by leaving. By the time they meet up in NY, she looked so damaged, brittle and fragile, it was heart-wrenching. Then Willow closing herself off as a result, losing her idealism, was so believable given the circumstances you created for them. It’s really no wonder one ended up an adult night club entertainer and the other a workaholic investment banker. You can’t get much different versions of these characters from their Whedonverse originals but you’ve done an excellent job managing to still make one sympathetic and appealing and the other heroic despite the handicaps.

Wherever you go with this, I'll be reading too, but I do hope you'll continue to touch on the process of reconnecting after the hurt of their teenage years even as you work your way through the current plot-heavy part. The last chapter was hilarious, though I do wish they had Badass Wes from S5 Angel instead to help them out--they look so vulnerable trying to bring Wilkins down on their own.
