I didn't want to start a new thread for this, so moderators please move if necessary, and pardon my ignorance, but in fan fiction, including W/T ff, what is "canon"?

Ooh, I know! Basically, 'canon' refers to an official text. In fan fiction, it means that the story takes place within the confines of the show/movie/etc. on which it is based. So for here, 'canon' would include a Sunnydale with a Hellmouth, the Slayer, vampires, etc...everything as shown on the series.

Some writers will use the canon up to a point, then veer off. Anything that takes the characters and puts them in an entirely different setting/world/whatever is AU (alternative universe). Beyond that you get into terms like Uber and Gen and I don't know what else, but I hope that answers your question.

ok, so i don't know where to post this, and my dummies book is no help - or i am a bigger dummy than they had in mind...

word crashed and then autorecovered my work... but when it came back up it had all these 'symbols' in it - you know the ones - for a paragraph (double P), a return (little arrow), and all these dots in between all my words.

i have opened several docs from all different files and they all look like this! argh! i don't know what the frell has happened and i have looked all over and in that drat book... i have 2007 office.

anyone out there with help, please answer here or email me or something.

Hey, Kris. Check and see if it's set to show that stuff. Normally, it hides it, but you can make it show it by clicking the paragraph symbol button in one of the toolbars. It might be that yours is set to "show" and all you'd have to do is click it and it'll hide those marks. The button is probably up there at the top. If you don't see the paragraph symbol in one of your toolbars, check the Add or Remove Buttons thingy in the toolbar and look for the paragraph symbol button.
