Happy Valentine's Thursday, MKF!

Mrs. Gorn & I are not big celebrators of Valentine's Day anymore. In Japan, women are supposed to give chocolate to men - and not just their boyfriends or husbands, but EVERY man they know, particularly guys in the same office. Then, on March 14th, you have White Day - men are supposed to return the favor and give chocolate to every woman who gave them something. It's very routine and not particularly romantic.

Still, I'm hoping all romantic Kittens out there have a good time, whether it's a dinner date for two, a sappy movie, or glow-in-the-dark mini-golf! As it turns out, Mrs. Gorn & I are going out to dinner tonight because we're both going to be working late; neither one of us remembered it was Valentine's Day when we made this plan ... perhaps it's Fate!

In other Thursday news, I got up at the butt-crack of dawn to take Mrs. Gorn to work this morning - with both her car AND her rental car in the shop, I had very few options. She starts about an hour before I do, but I wasn't about to start WORKING early! And certainly not on a Thursday! I scooted on down to the local diner and had a big heaping stack of buttermilk pancakes, the first pancakes I've had in '08! Oh, they were good! Lots of butter, smothered in maple syrup ...

I'm sleepy now. Really, really sleepy.

Thanks to Dianneswillowtree for the joke! She sprung it on me yesterday, but it's just as funny today.

happy valentine's day, mkf!

i am running late this morning, so this will be short, but i foresee an awesome thursday. there will be dinner, booze, glow-in-the-dark mini-golf and thursday nookie. woohoo! i'm just not allowed to call it a valentine's day event. the girl hates valentine's day (which makes me highly suspicious of her lol).

because i love valentine's day so and didn't get to unleash that love on the girl, i made fun little valentine's gift bags for my niece and step-niece and step-nephew. candy, toys, funny cards. good stuff. i also got my brother and sister-in-law some candy. so it feels like v-day now :)

hope you all have a great one!

Valentine's Day Update, MKF!

Mrs. Gorn & I ended up going out to the China Buffet for lunch today (the same one we go to at least once a week), so Mrs. Gorn decided we should just eat at home tonight, have leftovers. Our menu last night - frozen pizza & fries (the fries are gone, though, so we'll probably have Funyuns to replace them).

She then said to me later in the day, "Americans really make a big deal out of Valentine's Day, don't they?" after she'd heard what some other couples at work were planning. She asked if I were going to get her flowers or chocolates, and I told they'd go kind of strange with leftover frozen pizza and Funyuns ...

So, I guess I need to sneak out of work early today and get flowers & chocolate.

You know what I'd really like to do tonight, MKF? After our romantic dinner, the flowers & the chocolates, I'd like to open up a bottle of wine and go back and re-read Sassette's Valentine's Day Vignette.

Happy Valentines Day MKF! For this Thursday I am supremely busy sending out cards to all my friends, its a thing we do. And being on a job search. Makes for a super busy valentines day. Ugh. Its at least a halfway decent one compared to last years, I thought it would totally suck.

Happy Valentine's Day MKF to all the wonderful kittens. But if you're single, you may call it Singles Discrimination Day. I totally blew my diet this wonderful Thursday and what better day to do it than a Thursday. Well I guess it's ok to cheat every once in awhile. I just won't mention the cookie, donuts, and the 3 cupcakes I had. I couldn't help it the we had a Valentine's Party in my preschool class and the cupcakes were giving me a dirty look saying MMMM I'm soo tasty. I did go work out afterwards and walked 3 miles. I'm not a big fan of Valentine's Day, definately not one of my favorite holidays. And 2 people at my work most not be either b/c they wished me a Happy Thanksgiving by mistake. I don't know how the two relate but they seem to think they do. Now I'm having a beer, eating a pizza, and maybe going to watch a little Buffy later on tonight. ;-)
And oh what even makes this Thursday better, it's my Friday. No work for me tomorrow. :party :beer

How the hell is it Thursday already??? I'm glad and all, because Thursday is such a great thing, but what happened to Wednesday? To Tuesday? I swear it was just Monday...

Congrats to the now employed ktv, good luck to gorn in his valentine accesories purchasing, and general good wishes to all.

you guys should check out the book "quirkyalone" - it is my bible. i'm a confirmed quirkyalone (which you can be even when seeing someone - it's an identity, not a status). the movement celebrates "international quirkyalone day" on february 14. also checkout http://www.quirkyalone.net

happy quirkyalone day!

I'm here, I'm here! Sneaking in just under the wire. But there are 43 Thursday minutes left over here on the EST clock, so I'm in the clear, right?

Happy Valentines day all. I had a nice breakfast date with Mrs. Leaf this morning before I headed off to work to massage other people's honeys for the rest of the day (and evening...it was a long shift). There's something just a little bit wrong about that isn't there? But my boss brought in a box of the best cream puffs in the history of pastry making (http://www.muginohousa.com/main.php?nav=our_cream_puffs) which did a good deal to boost morale. And then I got home tonight and Mrs. Leaf had made a fantastic lasagna because she is the best wife EVER and it was all piping hot just outta the oven and we had some wine and a nice little last scrap of the evening.

All this talk made me remember my first Valentine's day with Mrs. Leaf. We were young and snarky and anti-sap (which is funny in hindsight because under the pretense we are two of the sappiest folks I know) and we wanted to do something together but only if it were as non-Valentinesy as possible. So we ended up going to see an edgy modernist production of Hamlet which was so bad we had to leave halfway through. He he he. Good times.

Good night! I hope everyone's sugar highs wear off gently.

Good morning kittens.

Thought I'd try a morning post this Thursday. It's actually been a lovely morning. There was a bit of sleeping in. And then I did some bargaining with Mrs. Leaf - I did the dishes and she ran out for a couple of bagels and the paper. Mrs. Leaf has recently gone back to school, and I am absolutely loving this new other-than-9-to-6 schedule of hers. We have all these nice random pockets of time together now. Thursday mornings, Tuesday evenings, alternate Wednesday afternoons... Since I work a lot of evenings and weekends it means we get to see each other much more. I like it quite a bit. The rest of my day will kick off with some laundry (heck, it just wouldn't be Thursday if I weren't doing laundry) and then I'll head off to work a little after noon.

Hey, did anyone catch the lunar eclipse last night? I went out to a movie with some buddies and caught some of it on the way home. It was pretty nifty to look at that big shadow on the moon and think "wow - that's us!"

So, my dears, enjoy your day and take a moment to marvel at the big big universe we're spinning through.

thanks! can i vent about my job, MKF? it's a great gig in theory and the compensation is amazing, but then there is the issue of the old-school [read: geriatric], condescending, prick of a boss that comes with it. i'm trying to toughen up and thicken my skin, but the guy insults my intelligence and ability based on things as subjective as writing style (he called me a wacko yesterday for writing a sentence, in an email, that was longer than he would write but was grammatically correct). i get that he has his own unique [read: blunt] style and i am doing my very best to learn to write similarly, but i've been here all of a week. he's just horrible and unreasonable. i hope i can tough it out until i pass the bar here and find something more my style. this firm does bankruptcy, real estate, and business litigation - i come from a background of labor/employment, civil rights, and personal injury. it's a totally different world but i'm trying to make my way.

and can i just mention again how demoralizing it is to know i have to take another bar exam all over again this summer? it totally crushes my soul.

so, i'm at work and trying to keep my head down and duck the slings and arrows. i heard a "good job" buried somewhere in one of my boss' diatribes earlier. i'm counting down the minutes to lunch (13 as of right now). there is this block of food carts and stands near my office that the girl introduced me to last week (a* told me it's imaginatively called "the cart block"). thus far i have had a burrito from one vendor who is appalled that i don't eat guacamole or salsa (i think he intentionally included a small glop of the green stuff in yesterday's burrito to spite me). i also had some terrible orange chicken and fried rice from a vietnamese place (i know, orange chicken is chinese). i need to compile a list of the things i want to try next... pierogies, cheeseteak, the soup cart, etc. there are more than a few indian stands, but much to a*'s displeasure, i am not a fan of indian (or thai). so that's my big decision for the day.

happy thursday, people!

P.S. it's now 12:20 and i forgot to hit Submit. i actually skipped the cart block for today and went to the subway in my building cause i have to take a short lunch today, but it's on tomorrow!

It's a post-lunar-eclipse Thursday, MKF!

Yeah, that was quite impressive. Nothing quite like seeing something like that up in the sky with your own eyes. The weather was beautiful here for it, too - a bit cold perhaps, but not a cloud in the sky.

Sorry to hear about the job, ktv ... For the right compensation, though, I've found most any boss to be tolerable. Perhaps you need to introduce him to "A Thread for Tara" so he can get his shit in order when it comes to the written word.

And what's this about not liking Indian or Thai food? Or guacamole & salsa??? The Indian & Thai food I can perhaps understand if it's not in your cultural background, but guacamole & salsa? Good lord, didn't you grow up in Los Angeles?

Did everyone see the "What Did You Learn Today MKF?" thread? Posted on a Thursday, no less! If not, I highly encourage you to scoot over there and learn something!

This has been a pretty long week, MKF, but it's Thursday now and everything seems more or less ok with the world. At least from where I'm sitting.

i grew up near los angeles, yes. i'm also half-mexican and was raised by my mexican side of the family. but i hate hate hate avocados and raw tomatoes, and raw onions make my tongue swell. when i was a kid my brother and some of his friends pelted me with rotten avocados that had fallen in the yard from a neighbors tree. i threw up for hours and couldn't get the smell out of my nose for days. and while i might dip a chip in salsa or something (dip, not scoop), i am not a fan of raw tomatoes so i prefer to not have salsa or pico de gallo mixed in my food. i know, i'm a bad mexican (i don't speak spanish either. GASP!). i also generally can't tolerate super spicy foods (again, bad mexican). a*'s going to force me eat some of her indian dishes (and i really do mean "force"), so we'll see if her powers of cooking yield any success on that front.

and now that you all know i have the palate of a five-year-old, i wish you a fond farewell (in this thread) till next thursday!

It's a snowy and icy Thursday, MKF. It was kind of a treacherous drive home but I made it home safely. Now I'm having a cold beer and some baked chicken. And praying that my workplace will be closed tomorrow, that way I can have a few more beers. I'm hoping eveyone had a wonderful Thursday and didn't work too hard. Now I'm off to pray to the snow gods so that we have more snow. Oh and KTV definately try the perogies, definately one of my faves with pizza sauce. But either way they are tasty. peace out kittens

It was too cloudy here to see the eclipse and this angered me for a while, but then I decided that I am grateful for clouds and weather. Planets don't work without weather. So yay for clouds!

Jumping on the food discussion train now....

I like salsa okay, I love pico de gallo, but I haaaaaaaaaaate avocados and, of course, guacamole. There really aren't many food things I hate more than avocados. Finding guacamole hidden in something I'm eating is horrifying.

Indian food is by far my favorite. Words cannot express my love for Indian food. (I love Thai food, too, but nowhere near as much as Indian.) I have never encountered an Indian dish I didn't like. As long as it doesn't have meat in it, I will eat it in bliss.

Pierogies are great!

Today was okay. Very windy and rainy. My umbrella blew up in a gust of wind. I guess I'm going to have to finally break down and invest in a fancy expensive umbrella.

I got some new Bolivian coffee the other day. I usually drink Colombian, but I thought I'd try something new. Actually, I don't care where they grow the stuff. I love coffee so much, I would totally drink that kopi luwak coffee if it were abundant and not so expensive. (If you don't know what that is, google it and be prepared to puke.) I use a cold brew method and only use fair trade coffee. Coffee is humongously important to me.

If someone put a gun to my head and demanded I choose between Indian food and coffee, I think they might have to just shoot me.

I hate the way you pay off a credit card bill and the next month there is this tiny interest charge you still have to pay. It's like a financial dingleberry.

Hope everyone had/has a happy Thursday!

Good Lord, MKF!! I had to go to the 2nd page to find this thread!!

It's payday and the boss is out - one would think this would make for a perfect Thursday, but I'm actually busy as hell. I always am when the boss is out because all the people who pester him all day come and pester me. Still, it IS kind of relaxing not having the boss sitting over there. Psychologically, at least, you know?

Anyway, if I get home before bedtime tonight I'll stop by again and say hey.

I hope all Kittens out there can see their weekend coming now - Happy Thursday!

Ok, as a relative newbie, and having never posted in this thread, may I ask a question?

Why is Thursday held in such high esteem by the kittens? Threads for other days have been relagated to the nether regions yet this one seems to be thriving.

I was going to ask what happens if someone posts on a day other than a thursday, but as dline has done so and the internet didn't implode, I guess the answer is nothing ;-)

Personally, I like Thursdays, well every other Thursday, cos I get paid fortnightly and usually need the dosh by then.

So, in the spirit of this thread, Happy Thursday everyone!!

Welcome to Thursday, Paint the Sky!

I really do not have the time to do this today, but it IS Thursday; I ought to make time to do the Right Thing. I seem to have become the unofficial cheerleader of this thread - or perhaps it is official, I don't know. I DO know Thursdays, though, so I'll be happy to explain.

In your heart, you already seem to have some understanding of how great Thursdays are. Fridays & Saturdays are great - nobody needs to be told this and these days don't really need their own thread. Sundays are OK ... but there's kind of a downer Sunday night when you're getting ready for bed, knowing what horrors await you the following morning. I am, of course, talking about Monday, the single most godforsaken day of the week. It is an abomination, a plague upon Humanity, a cross we all must bear each and every goddamn week. Tuesday & Wednesday are little better - even on Wednesday, "Humpday," you're still only halfway there. It can be disheartening. These days do not in the least warrant their own special thread. Yes, I know such threads exist, but I pay them no heed.

But Thursday! Ah! It's like rounding that last corner in the Kentucky Derby, coming into the home stretch. The goal is right there in front of you. You can see it! Thursday is like a mini Christmas Eve that you can celebrate, look forward to, and enjoy each and every week. It's like that first drink of cool, clear water after crossing the desert, MKF.

Since first discovering this thread a little over a year ago now, though, I've come to learn there's even more to it than that. It's not something I think I can explain; it's an intangible, abstract feeling. Almost spiritual. This thread has changed my life and the way I look at the world. It has made my burdens lighter. Spend a little time here, talk to the other Apostles, perhaps meditate upon it for a while; if you're one of the lucky, the few, the chosen ... you will come to understand just as the rest of us have.

Now, as for posting here on non-Thursdays? MKF frowns on it, but she's cute when she frowns. What are you gonna do? If it's still in the Spirit of the thread, I don't think there's really any long-term threat to your karma. Just don't make a habit of it.

Welcome, and Happy Thursday!

Gorn, thank you for taking time to explain. It is a testament to your dedication to Thursdays that despite your busy day, what with the boss being away an all, you gave such a full and eloquent exposition on the specialness of this day, and why all the other days pale by comparison.

As I read each point I found myself nodding in agreement.

I declare myself a lover of Thursdays and vow never to desecrate this thread by posting on any other day.

OH. MY. GOD.

gorny... you are a wackjob and a half but i heart you. that was an amazing manifesto on the virtues of thursday.

today was payday for me, too, but unfortunately my boss is around and making me feel about an inch tall. so thursday is not all wonderfulness.

i also proved myself to be a massive moron outside of the office today.

i had a quick coffee date with the girl this morning. she's leaving for a wedding out of state today and was going to leave work early and take the MAX (the train here in portland) to the airport but her cat peed in her big rolling suitcase and she had to pack a few smaller, heavier, non-rolling bags. so being the swell gal that i am, i offered to take my lunch late and drive her to the airport. so we rode the max home, she got off at 42nd and i went on to my stop at 60th where i was going to pick up my car and drive over to her place to retrieve her and the bags. the rub? i get off at my stop, realize i've left my car keys downtown in my office, and enter full-scale panic mode. i hop the train back to her place, call a cab to come get her, and then find that her roommate is home and can take her to the airport. arrgh. so i got some smooches and hopped the train back to work. sigh.

but i just got a mushy text from her as she waits at the gate and i scored plenty of points with the effort alone. woohoo. and i did get a nice little train ride with her. so maybe not quite a horrible ordeal.

but apparently, i've just learned that walked into a shitstorm at work (thankfully, not caused by me...whew) so it's going to be a late night.

yay thursday!

Happy Thursday, Kittens! I just got a credit card, which all in all makes it a pretty good Thursday. :)

I wasn't even going to post today, yeah it's been that kind of day. But I figured I needed a little bit of Thursday in my life. I just kinda feel sad and a little blah today. I had some pretty messed up dreams last night so I think they put me in a bad mood. How dare they do that to me on a Thursday. Well happy Thursday Kittens....18 more hours to the end of my work week. And Gorn excellent explanation about the greatness of Thursdays. Roll with it. :beer :sheep :dance

Check it out, this thread is over 4 years old! That is so awesome. I proclaim this thread The Most Successful Thread In the Entire History of the Kitten Board!

(Actually, that honor would probably have to go to one of the fic threads on Pens that is 6259585 pages long and has 8213899274932984820982 views, but let's not quibble.)

Interestingly enough, this thread was begun as a sort of "Thursday is my Saturday" sort of thing...and also because I was bored and didn't really have anything to say but wanted to say it anyway. (I've since gone back to mostly lurking, so you are all safe from further attempts on my part to say nothing. Wait. *thinks* lol, that doesn't make sense, yet...it makes perfect sense. Or does it? *cries*)

The point of all that was that, as originally conceived, this thread was not a celebration of some gornified home-stretch mini-Christmas-Eve concept of Thursdays, but because the internet is so tremendously awesome, not only has its basic meaning changed considerably, but it has evolved into something far more satisfying than its humble beginnings would suggest possible.

All that said, officially, this IS a "daily thread" and, as such, anyone can post anything they want in it (FAQ-permitting, natch) any time they want. Personally, I feel uncomfortable coming here on non-Thursdays, but no one is prohibited from posting here Friday through Wednesday about any subject. Furthermore, anyone is welcome to start a daily thread.

My Thursday was decent. I found out I made an A on something I had expected to totally bomb, so I got a teeny spritz of joy this afternoon. Otherwise, I am just looking ahead to a weekend filled with tons of work. Everything about my life is in contrast to the spirit of what this thread has become, but I am really glad the rest of you look forward to weekends and, some day, I will be one of you. Yay!

Happy Thursday to everyone and a special happy mini-Chrismas-Eve to gorn, who rescued this thread and made it what it is today. *wipes tear*

gorn, dear fearless leader, that was the laugh I have been needing all week. In the spirit of vaguely cultish Thursday lingo, bless you!

Like several other kittens, my Thursday was loooooooooong. And not particularly celebratory. But always there like a beacon in the gloom was the knowledge that when I finally got home tonight I could read the Thursday thread.

I'm keeping it short tonight on account of the lateness and tomorrows early start, but I hope everyone is on their way to a good weekend.

Welcome Paint the Sky, we're glad to have you. Just don't drink the Kool-aid.

Woo-hoo, my first real post MKF!

Today has been a stonker of a day, and I get the first post today, yeeha!

I have finally finished my assessor training and I am now a fully fledged NVQ Assessor. It's been a long haul of assessing while being observed and evidence gathering, but today, the training wheels came off.

So, that may not mean much to anyone but me, but I'm doing the happy dance just thinking that it's finally finished.

Also just found out that I won £80 on last nights lottery, and just to completely put the tin hat on it, I'm sitting at home eating cookies and drinking coffee cos it was too late to go back to work after class.

Happy Thursday MKF, I know mine is :pinky
