Hi Phoenix,

It's been a long time since my last feedback. It's weird but reading this story always makes me feel kinda euphoric. Everything I want to do is lie down a while and let my thoughts wander. Your writing style does it I think. It's like a drug really, safe kind of one I hope!

I really enjoy this bittersweet blend of melancholy and hope. Keep the den open, I'll be back.

Oh, how I love how your story is progressing Jen! I just caught the last couple of updates (been busy as hell...still am actually!), and its always such a pleasure coming back to your writing.

I'm curious about whether Faith recognizes Tara at all (since she did used to be on the Prez's security, ja?), or will at some point realize that she knows who Tara works for. I can't wait to see how Willow works that one out, and how Tara continues her life/work in the meantime.

I noticed that your next update is Azadi, which is Hindi/Urdu for Freedom. I'm already waiting to see what it entails :)

Heya! Hope I wasn't too intruding randomly commenting on your blog :$

Wonderful update once again. I can't get enough of their scenes together. I really liked this quote, for some reason:

"That's a rather unanswerish answer, Tara," Willow said, her heart burning and sinking with every word.

Though pretty much all their conversation would be worth mentioning. I love how everything fits, in words as well as in the storyline. It's such a strong story.

I can only agree with PolarBear on this, I quote cause I feel my words are so inferior after your updates ;)

Wow, this story really moves - although I guess my colossal lateness in leaving feedback is partly to blame for how much has happened since I last did so :blush I really like how you write this story - it's not just a matter of how Willow and Tara meet, or what their backstories are, or how the plot develops, there's a very distinct style and rhythm to this story that makes it very much its own 'thing' - it's like being able to spot a film director's technique just from watching a scene, something like that. The whole story, from the ground up, is subtly stylised - kind of like the world itself, same as ours but skewed in a different direction in all sorts of little ways - it makes reading it a very individual experience. And a rewarding one, too :) I find it's not a relaxing experience to read, but the quality makes it a compelling one.

I started reading your story 2 days ago...I couldn't stop, lost a lot of sleep in the process, but it was worth it! All I can say is that I am intrigued with your style of writing, same as when I read "The Lamb", and you have me wanting more. :blush

I really liked this update, beginning with the tense silence, the uncomfortable silence, the silence when it involved Willow's mother. What a mental image I visioned there... And finally this;
Silence. Honey golden and just as sweet. Not conquered, not defeated. Just silence, a moment for the world to right itself, a moment for balance.

So beautiful :)

I like how Tara's outside world seems not to exist in Willow's house. How they can enjoy a meal and conversation. Although it was intense conversation as Tara explained in more detail her role as an "Apothecary". Okay so no easy path, I hear ya! ;-)

I loved this part;
Forehead. She kissed everyone else on the forehead.
(She kissed me on the mouth.)

Hee- hee, it was sweet.

Wonderful update!

Hey there!

Ah...the avatar. As a fairly logical adult, I realize a fear of zombies is completely irrational. For some reason, the notion of zombies tickles me. I love those kind of books. There's a quiz thing on Facebook now to pick the 5 things you need to survive a Zombie attack. Makes me giggle every single time.

On to the feedback. This was a touching chapter because their staggering losses are still very much a part of them. Their coming together does not magically erase those burdens which makes the story of their early love all the more real. However, with each new revelation, it seems the hard edges of their lives are softening slightly.

"That used to be the truth," Tara said. "But now I have you."

Of all the beautiful statements in this chapter, that one struck me more than the others. I think it's that Tara has struggled from the beginning to push Willow away. Finally hearing her quiet acceptance was one of those moments that makes you sigh contentedly.

Cheers!

Right, have taken a vow to say something about this that may actually be of some use to you, rather than merely waxing lyrical about how blindingly, hopelessly, puppy-dog-eyesingly in love with it I am. Shit, foiled again.

I'm sick, I'm exhausted and I have a headache, but I'm on top of the world! My chorus went to Regional competition this past weekend in Calgary, Alberta, where 16 Sweet Adelines choruses from the three western provinces of Canada and the territories came to compete. Last year we won first place in the mid-size chorus category and second overall.

Well, yesterday we won first in mid-size, and FIRST overall! This means we have won a place to compete on the international stage against Sweet Adelines choruses throughout the world in 2010 in Seattle, Washington. It has been a dozen years since our chorus has competed at that level - we're playing with the big girls now!

If any of you love to sing, try to find a chapter of Sweet Adelines to join. There is such beauty to be found in this sisterhood, beauty and song. Just google Sweet Adelines to find a chapter near you - there are chapters all over the world!

Okay, my shameless propaganda is over. I'm just really thrilled. There are TWO first place medals around my neck!

Moving on.

To feedback, apparently.

Nenyath - Mucho congratulations on the dibs - your first ever in any of my fics! I'm very happy for you, and I'm glad you are enjoying the story. Thanks for everything.

Zampsa - I'm glad you enjoyed it. More talking is coming up, but not in this chapter! I hope you like it regardless.

Dorothy - I don't mind getting needled into posting. I just want to make sure I'm up ahead enough in chapters (I like to be at least two chapters ahead of posting, in case I make any plot changes). So German is your first language? If I need assistance with any German phrasing, may I pm you? Thanks, and I hope you enjoy the chapter!

Nue - Oh, you bet they will help each other. They do have a lot to work through, but I think you'll enjoy the ride. Thanks for sharing feedback.

Polar Bear - Good to see you again! No worries on the infrequent commenting - I'm guilty of it myself. I really have to reply to both Constants and Impulse. I'm glad the story leaves you feeling euphoric, the den is definitely open for business, and see you soon!

Shai - Heya Sheba. Thanks for the curiosity about Faith - I've definitely been cooking up some character history for her. I'm very excited about revealing more history for a lot of our characters. Azadi - good catch. You'll see very soon what I intended by it. Enjoy!

sadie - I loved your comment on my blog. Feel free to comment as you wish. I like sharing some of my thoughts there. I'm glad you enjoyed the update, and your next fix is coming soon!

Artemis - Absolutely spiffing to see you here again. I always love your comments. I very much enjoyed the comparison to a director's style; how you can infer so much just from camera angle and lighting. I'm glad my story has similar resonance, that subtle stylizing, as you put it. Thank you so much for reading, and I hope you enjoy the next chapter.

LittleBit - I'm as addicted to this story as you guys are, so I will definitely be keeping up the writing. I'm also going to be prohibitively long-winded with this story - I don't even think I'm halfway through. I hope you continue to enjoy it!

Sandman - That's quite a commitment for the last two days - this story has topped over 75,000 words already, which is the equivalent of a 350 page novel. Thanks so much - it makes me feel so good to know it is that compelling to some of my readers. Enjoy the next chapter!

irishgrl3 - Hi, Anna. I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter. I have a love/hate relationship with silence myself. In the early stages of a relationship, silence can be deadly. I also identified rather heavily with the choices part of this update. I'm very glad you enjoyed it, and I hope you like what is coming!

ophelia - I'm glad you liked that sentence at the end. Tara has tried for a long time to push Willow away, but her final acceptance is very meaningful. You'll find out more about both of them in the chapters to come. I'm quite excited about chapter 28...or is it 29? Can't remember, but the title is "Fruit". You'll love it. Promise. So keep reading! Thanks for commenting.

restlessminds - Wow. Blindingly, hopelessly, puppy-dog-eyesingly in love? I'm honoured and very touched. I'm so very happy I can share this story with you, and thank you for leaving feedback, even if you can't always keep up with your vow. I hope you enjoy the next update.

ceridwen - You wanna read more? Coming right up! Thanks for reading!

Azadi

It was not yet dawn, but in Tehran it was never fully dark. Light pollution from the city was often trapped by the smog, wrapping the city all hours of the night in an ethereal glow. It softened the harsh edges of tract housing, the ancient and beloved architecture of the past bulldozed and redefined in a quest for western solidarity.

Xander stood on the balcony of his apartment, sipping a cup of kaf and looking out over the city. Nearby was the Azadi

(Freedom!)

Tower, surrounded by fir trees and lit with hybrid light. It was a creamy coloured bastion this hour before dawn; he began every day with this silent perusal of the tower. Constructed of marble, the tower was more than an architectural delight; it was also a museum. The artistic history of the country was relayed in artifacts within the museum, and when Xander gazed upon the tower every morning before dawn he was reminded of Willow, of Buffy, and the terrifying secret they had unearthed.

He missed them both so very much.

Only here, safe and protected in his apartment, would Xander allow himself to think of them. This was the only place he could take off his eye patch, the only place he could take off his shirt.

So he stood there, without his eye patch, without his shirt, and nestled between his shoulder blades was a tattoo, of a dragon with her tail curled about her nest, her egg the world, holding a sword in one hand and a dove in the other. The tattoo was a year old now; he had forgotten much of the sting of its forging.

He wished he could forget the other pains of his ascension. His head still hurt from time to time.

Xander drained the last of his kaf and saw sunlight bleed into the sky, shooing away the pearly smog. Before long the heat would arise, another day would begin, and perhaps this would be the day he would finally find what he was looking for.

He doubted it. Hope had fallen from his vocabulary.

Besides, there was always tomorrow. Joyce Summers would be flying into Tehran tomorrow.

Xander took one final look at Azadi Tower and retreated inside. In the basement of his apartment was a well-equipped gym; he began his morning by jogging five miles. At precisely six in the morning his Steward entered the gym, offering lukewarm water and green tea.

As much as he respected his Steward, Xander couldn't stand the man. Punctilious and arrogant, Wesley never seemed capable of smiling.

Xander had come to realize he did precious little smiling himself; usually confined to those Willow-moments through the vid screen. The thought haunted him.

"Any news?" Xander asked, accepting a towel from the man.

"Yes, as a matter of fact. I have just spoken with Giles. Willow is recuperating well from her encounter with the djinn, and as impossible as it seems, it is apparent that Willow is falling in love with her."

Xander allowed the half-envious lub of his heart when he heard of Willow's new romantic interest. They had grown up together, and it was only in their initial training after high school, seeing her hard, bruised, and perspiring, that Xander realized what he could have had.

Even by then it was too late. The story of Willow and Xander would be forever unwritten.

Xander sighed. Giles had phoned him that day, the day Willow woke from her djinn-induced nightmare. None of them had known back then what Tara actually was. Now, half a world away, seeing Willow in a relationship, a relationship with a half-demon, no less, held less pain than he thought. He only wanted Willow to be happy.

He only wanted Willow to be safe. If he had any idea of this Tara the day he spoke to Willow on the phone, he never would have encouraged her as he did. This would get far messier than anyone could realize.

(Azadi!)

The mug shattered in Xander's grip. He hadn't realized he was gripping it so hard.

Wesley didn't flinch.

"And the djinn? Does she hold her own collar or not?" Xander asked, standing in the spray of crockery and limp tea.

"She does not. It is not known at this point who her Master is."

"That's not exactly comforting," Xander replied, staring at the shards on the floor. This world was far more perilous than he could have ever known.

He remembered the taste of the Pacific Ocean, the heat of the sands of Malibu, and innocent outings as high school seniors. The cool slide of beer down the throat, half burned hot dogs in the flames, never realizing, never dreaming that this world was in peril, and that he, among all others, would be the one to save it.

Unfathomable dreams, like the reality of Kris Kringle.

He couldn't blame Buffy for the choice she made, when she decided to be with Riley. He accepted the consequences of her choice with as much courage as he could muster. The transfer of power, the ascension was more painful than he imagined. Now he was in Tehran, honouring the last wish of his golden-haired friend. Buffy never wanted Willow to be caught so deep in this world.

(She's my Willow, too.)

No one ever got what they wanted.

(Willow and a djinn)

"Giles has already secured greater surveyance, in hopes of ascertaining the identity of Tara's Master."

"How much did Jenny tell her?" Xander asked, ignoring the flare of pain in his palm from the shattered glass.

"Only the identity of the djinn, and after great duress."

"And Giles is still unaware of Azadi?"

"Yes."

There was hesitation in Wesley's voice.

"Out with it, Wesley."

"It also appears that Jenny invoked Pythia, and received a prophecy."

Xander lifted his head. "And?" he asked.

"It seems as if Tara is essential. We musn't kill her as we planned."

"The exact words, Wesley."

"Giles, Tara is the key. For night has come and there is no dawn. She is the key for us all," Wesley recited from memory.

"Did Jenny tell Willow about Azadi?"

"No, sir."

"Good." Xander had learned by now to accept his small victories. The longer Azadi was a secret, the better.

Later that morning Xander exited his apartment, slipping easily into the rivers of humanity that seeped throughout the ancient city. He could not wear his sword freely here, so he always had daggers on him, discreet, jagged, powerful. It took some time to find his way to the Great Bazaar; he wove a serpentine route not as easily tracked. The patch was back over his eye, but this was not such a cultural oddity here as it was back home.

Eye for an eye was still in force in Persia.

If Xander ever encountered the Persian who had mutilated him, who had ripped open Giles' cheek, who had nearly eviscerated Willow, he would command more payment than just an eye.

The season for cherries was over, and it would yet be a month or two before the watermelons. Wandering the aisles of the Great Bazaar, slipping through the crowds with surprising grace, Xander kept his one eye open for fresh fruit that didn't smell funny or have spikes and impossible names. If he was lucky, he would find some fresh lychee, brought in from Prussia.

If he was really lucky, he would find a clue.

(Luck died with Buffy.)

(Violently.)

The covered awnings did not breathe in the dry summer heat, yet they did manage to deflect the battering ram of sun. It was like walking through a rainbow; the awnings were made of every colour imaginable, muted and conquered by that anvil sun. There was no blessed sweep of air to lift the heat or stir away the smell of the bustling city of Tehran. It was a mixture of sweat and tobacco, of wasps dipping into ripe and spoiled fruits, a hint of urine and smog and decomposition.

Sweat had fallen under his eye patch, so he pulled out his handkerchief and wiped the majority of it away.

He was being followed.

The serpentine shuffle of people amongst the booths could not divert the woman who shadowed him. She was able to surf through these crowds with an equal measure of uncanny ease. Xander did not have to look behind him to know that she was there, that she wore a thin silk scarf over her dark hair, or that she had daggers secreted in all sorts of interesting places on her person.

He paused at the corner of a garish booth, immediately enduring the shrill barking of the vendor trying to push sweetmeats and Turkish Delight into his hands. There was a short jab of pain in his head, and then he heard the flow of Persian words as if they were English. He opened his mouth and was able to barter with the woman in linguistic perfection. The woman was a little surprised at his ease with her language; he managed to leave the booth paying significantly fewer dinars for the Turkish Delight than she had probably hoped.

When the attack came, only minutes later in a rank alley, it came from his blind side.

Unfortunate fool. Whoever had hired the woman did her a disservice. Did she not know that Xander drew her in here on purpose?

It would take far more than a gouged eye to blind Alexander Lavelle Harris. Not while he was Marshal-General of the Drakensdvaerder.

(trepanning

the gods speak)

He felt a surge of anger towards her employer as he engaged her in the alley. Those close to Xander's heart knew he hated killing, even at need. He had, after all, Scooby-Doo pajama bottoms and a Spiderman watch.

Duty a mountain; it would crush him in the end.

"I am sorry for the message you must bear," he said to her as he killed her with three short economical movements of his knife.

How he missed the everlasting California sunshine and the laughter of his friends. Staying up late and flicking popcorn at each other. Pretending to puke as Buffy and Willow swooned of Venice love stories. Drinking root beer too fast and belching. Sitting up late with his flashlight, reading adventure comics, never knowing, never dreaming that his own life would become more fantastic than any story, truth infinitely stranger than all fiction.

Duty.

Xander cleaned himself up after he arrived home; Wesley would take the clothes and destroy them. With the Turkish Delight in his hands, Xander climbed upstairs. Next to a closed door was a retinal scanner; Xander pressed his good eye against it.

The computer prompt today was in Chuvatsky, the extinct language of Siberia. He'd never heard it uttered before, yet with another twinge to his head Xander replied in kind.

The door slid open, revealing a room in a million shades of pink; blush, bashful, blaring. The walls were peppered with crayon drawings. Sitting on a rug in the center of the room was a four year old girl, patiently braiding the hair of her doll. She looked so much like her mother.

Xander held out the Turkish Delight. "I brought you something, Azadi."

to be continued next Sunday, May 3, with Chapter 26 :Curiosities

Dibs!!!

I had to dib the chapter with a name so similar to my own.

Things are getting more and more interesting.

Who is Azadi? Is she Buffy's daughter? Is she not dead as Willow thought? I was sad that there was no Willow or Tara in this chapter but with the way you write, there is never a bad or boring chapter, so I remain fascinated with this story.

Congratulations on your win. I'm sure you'll accumulate a lot more medals.

Yay for excellent update-y goodness... So Xander is Willow's boss... I think Azadi is Dawn mentioned by Tara... I wonder what Joyce's role is going to be... And I really wonder how accepting Xander really is to Tara...

BTW if you have problems with german I recommend that you ask Dax. He's german so I think he can help you with that.

thanks for this amazing birthday gift!!! :party

btw, congratz for the prize! I´m a no-professional singer, got a rock band... I think this is more fun, you know? I was at college chorus and church chorus (before I dropped it to play violin)... Now, I just don´t have time, being at college for the third time, work, band, social life...

I kinda miss those days...

I really enjoyed this update, even with Willow and Tara's absence this was a great chapter! I was wondering about Xander in Persia. We haven't quite got his whole story though huh? Waiting to hear about this part of the story, what could the secret be? :)
The artistic history of the country was relayed in artifacts within the museum, and when Xander gazed upon the tower every morning before dawn he was reminded of Willow, of Buffy, and the terrifying secret they had unearthed.

This part is curious... Xander, who has he become?
He wished he could forget the other pains of his ascension. His head still hurt from time to time.

I guess the biggest surprise however is Azadi... oohhh I have so many questions!!!

Looking forward to your update, my curiosity is killing me. Hee-hee. :)

Postby Tara the Phoenix » Tue May 05, 2009 7:27 pm

I'm very sorry it's late, folks. Work has been eating into my life more than usual lately. I've also realized we're a fair bit into the story, so it might be a good time for a synopsis. The next update is nearly ready, but not tonight, so what I'm going to do is put the synopsis up right now, and then do feedback response tomorrow when I put up the new update.

Always, always remember that I'm writing this one by the seat of my pants. I have some idea of where I'm going, but when something hits, I just gotta go with it, and hope that it jives with what I've already done! I mention this because some nifty stuff is coming up very soon. As in Chapter 27.

Here's the synopsis!

The Apothecary begins with Willow coming to Tara's den for the first time, though she has been many times to the poppy den downstairs. She is dressed immaculately, and comes with a request for a dream, a dream to help her remember the best of Buffy, who had died violently in her presence a few months previously.

Willow meets the Apothecary; Tara, who instantly knows so much about her and her past. Tara reminds her that the dream is only a dream; she cannot speak to the dead. Even realizing this, Willow wants her dream. Tara retreats into her workroom to prepare the dream and Willow reads from The Chronicles of Narnia, losing herself in that world while Tara prepares a dream in this one.

When Tara comes out of her workroom, Willow instantly notices how most of Tara's hair had changed colour, and how fragile and exhausted Tara looks. Showing concern that no client has ever shown before, Willow goes to her on bended knee and inquires after her. Tara struggles with the desire to kiss Willow on the lips; she must kiss in order to deliver her dreams, but she only kisses on the forehead.

With Willow showing such concern, and having such desire for her, Tara kisses her on the mouth, transferring her dream as well as a portion of Tara's perennial nightmare. She decides that she does not want to see Willow again; she does not want Willow to become addicted to the dream, nor for Willow to eventually ask to see Eva, who could take her from this world and put her in another one. Willow leaves with the impression that Tara never wants to see her again.

Willow is joined by her Steward, Giles, and her new driver, Faith. They make their way back to Willow's estate on the outskirtsof Sunnydale. Once there, Willow plays with her puppy while preparing for training, constantly thinking of Tara and the kiss they shared. Once in the training dojo, she is joined by Faith and her Armsmaster, Spike. During the course of the training Spike injures her; Giles shows he is more than a Steward by neatly sewing up her wound.

Meanwhile, back at the den, Tara is hard at work building her extra dreams that she takes about town. Eva comes in, surprised to catch Tara off her guard, and explains that she is off to Siam, to one of the other twenty poppy dens scattered over the globe, all operated by their Master. Before midnight strikes, Tara delivers her dreams, and discovers to her shock that she recognizes a woman as Buffy's mother.

That night Willow has her dream, and it begins as she had hoped. It is the night of Buffy and the fair, the night when Buffy gave her a cracker jack ring and told Willow how much she was loved. It would be the pivotal moment of Willow's life. However, the dream is tainted by Tara's nightmare, and Willow is transported to that horrifying night when Buffy died; in the midst of the dream Willow attacks, and skewers the watching Tara with a sword.

Tara wakes, in shock at seeing Willow's dream (she never sees into her client's dreams), and at the sensation of the sword going through her. That day is a difficult one; for her client she has Warren, a dark and sadistic man who orders equally dark and sadistic dreams. The next day is almost worse. Though she has only an immature woman named Harmony to build a dream for, she is becoming more and more certain that Willow will not come back, tormenting herself with wondering if Willow would come or not.

Back at Willow's mansion, Willow wakes from her dream with an intense loathing for Tara and for the happy memory she had ruined. Yet even worse is the feeling of absolute love and devotion she felt for The Apothecary; force-fed upon her in the dream. That day she begins to research Tara's background. Concerned for her, Giles asks Xander to phone. In their conversation, Xander reminds her that she is the one writing her own destiny, not anyone else. After talking to Xander, Willow decides to input the tattoo she noticed inside Tara's elbow. When Jenny, her chef, comes to deliver her meal, she recognizes the mark.

Time passes in a slow march for Tara. A week goes by and her heart sinks under her enslavement, contained by a boundary as well as by her Master. The next day we discover who her Master is; none other than President Wilkins, who comes to her den to collect the inky oil she produces each night from her screams. With that ink he will rule the world.

To Tara's surprise, she wakes one morning to find Willow in her den. Not the soft seductive Willow of the time previously, but a sharp and dire Willow, armed with a rapier and with knowledge. Incredibly, Willow has discovered the truth of Tara's heritage: that she is a djinn, collared and controlled by her evil Master.

Yet as Willow says the words, revealing her knowledge of Tara, a response mechanism deep in Tara's psyche takes over. She attacks Willow as she attacks all who gain knowledge of her, and Willow is suddenly in the greatest fight of her life. They dance their horrifying dance of blood there in the den, and finally, shockingly, Willow lays her rapier across Tara's throat, and growls her win. Defeated, Tara falls unconscious.

Not knowing what else to do to protect the woman who had come to mean so much to her in the week she had spent in investigation, Willow has Faith take them back to their house, where Giles and the others are waiting to help. Both she and Tara are stitched up, but Giles betrays Willow and sends her into sleep even while using another witch of Jenny's race to imprison Tara in her mind.

Deep within her house of pain, Tara waits to regain consciousness when she realizes she is not alone. She goes into the library of her mind and finds Drusilla there, destroying the books that signify her memories. Drusilla finds the precious red leather book wherein Tara had kept all Willow-centric memories, and begins to destroy it, page by page, until Tara can scarcely remember any of her first visit with Willow.

In the real world, Jenny Calendar speaks with Giles, and invokes a magical spell of prophecy, hoping to gain perspective on what Tara is to them. Jenny has no reason to trust Tara nor any djinn; she had been tortured by them not long ago, rescued from that torture by Willow. Yet she realizes that Willow has fallen in love with the genie. The Oracle Pythia speaks through the magic spell, and they realize how important Tara is, to keep Tara alive at all costs.

In her meditation, Jenny realizes that Drusilla has betrayed them. Appearing in Tara's mind, Jenny comes to the rescue, freeing Tara from the grasp of Drusilla and ejecting Drusilla from Tara's mind. There she speaks with Tara, hoping to get a glimpse of Tara's personality and her feelings for Willow. Tara reassures her that she cares for Willow, that she would not want Willow to come to harm, especially on her account. Jenny leaves Tara with a choice: to destroy the last of the book that remains and be a stranger to Willow, or to walk down this very dangerous path.

When Willow awakens, she discovers the extent of the betrayal, how Giles and Jenny wanted an opportunity to do away with the djinn, if it were necessary. She speaks of the hardships of her life, how all she wanted, all she needed was to love and be loved, and that there was no one else who could be there for her. That Tara had suffered so cruelly at the hands of humans in all the years of her existence, and Willow wanted to be a part of Tara's future.

Tara finally comes back to her and there, both of them wounded in body and heart, they connect to each other, and realize the depth of their feelings for each other. Questions abound for both of them. Willow begins to show Tara the wonders of her mansion, and in the library Willow reveals her tattoo that signifies that she is the First Lieutenant of the Drakensdvaerder, a secret society for the salvation of mankind. Delving deep into their emotions, Tara and Willow share a meal together and the secret recesses of their hearts. Before they go much further, Tara wants Willow to realize what exactly it is that she does as Apothecary.

Meanwhile, in Persia, Xander is revealed to be the Marshal-General of the Drakensdvaerder, a man much changed from the comic-reading boy. He is charged with the task of protecting Azadi, whose name means freedom, a four year old girl who looks very much like her mother.

And the story continues... tomorrow!

Much love,
Jen the Phoenix

'Synopsis posted, new chapter on Wed' - that's a bit of an unwieldy title for this update, don't you think - not a snappy as the one word monikers for the previous ones. And, please forgive me for saying so, but I think you are starting to repeat yourself. Are you running out of ideas?

Lol - sorry about that, just my very early morning bout of silliness:)

The delay in posting gives me a chance to take care of long unattended business here in the form of some feedback.

Many chapters have passed since I last logged in here to comment, so I'm making an effort before I go to work with the knowledge that an update is imminent.

The last chapter was particularly interesting - if there wasn't enough mystery here, you introduce a Xander, as you say, vastly changed, and what I can only assume, at this point, Buffy's child.

As you can imagine, my brain is doing loop the loops trying to work that one out.

Your portrayal of Xander give him a wonderful maturity and an amazing depth - how hard it must be for him to keep secrets from Willow. Random thought - does Xander outrank Willow in the order - General to Willow's Lieutenant? If he has taken Buffy' place, is it reasonable to think so? Could this be important later on? Questions, questions, questions! My impatient brain will wait!

Bloody hell, I should be on my way out the door - lol!

What a wickedly tangled-web you weave. Claustrophobia, mournfulness and menace cling to the reader as surely as they do the protagonists. Regret and loss of innocence has rarely been painted with such savage beauty.

Thanks for sharing

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I kinda like late updates because I can sneak my feedback in at the last minute. :sh You have a work monster that eats your time too? I wonder if yours is related to mine? ;)

Anyhoo, some time in one of the feedbacks I had a total 6 degrees of separation moment because my sister sings in her local Sweet Adelines group. I think their group went to one of the competitions in Hawaii a few years back. My memory fails me more and more as time goes on. :)

Now...actual feedback. Though I'm always eager for the interactions between Willow and Tara, I really enjoyed their absence in this chapter. Other than Tara's feelings, we've only seen Willow through the eyes of her employees. Though there's no doubt of their feelings for her, it was refreshing to see Willow through Xander's eye. The man who has known and loved all versions of her throughout her life. In turn, we got to understand his role far better as well.

He felt a surge of anger towards her employer as he engaged her in the alley. Those close to Xander's heart knew he hated killing, even at need. He had, after all, Scooby-Doo pajama bottoms and a Spiderman watch.

I love the way you take such conflicting images and pull them together with such elegance. For me, it captured the complexity of human nature, that the man with a killer's duty could so easily co-exist with the man with the heart of a boy. Bravo!

After your last comments, I'm anxious to read "Fruit". As always, thank you so much for sharing.

I wish I could do feedback response, but I'm going to have to piggyback it on the feedback for the next chapter. I'm glad everyone enjoyed the synopsis - ready to roll?

Right on.

Curiosities

There was nothing to hint of yesterday's spilled blood in the luxury sedan. Not even a whiff of bleach, accompanied by air freshener. Willow wondered if Faith had just gone out and bought an identical new car.

No new car smell, though. Only the scent of Tara.

The divider was up between the front and back seats, and there was barely any sound as they made their way down the long private drive. Willow looked at Tara quite openly, a small smile on her face as she vicariously enjoyed the breathtaking beauty of her estate through the eyes and warm hand of the djinn. Tara had just revealed that she was six thousand years old, give or take a century or two; the idea that this woman could still appreciate beauty made Willow's heart clench. With each new vista, Tara's smile would grow richer and more fervent, and she would accompany her delights with a squeeze of Willow's hand.

"You know, I half expected there to be a secret underground lair with all sorts of advanced weaponry and cool toys for espionage," Tara said, smiling broadly as they exited the estate through the reinforced steel gates. "Though the rest of the world may not know it, the Drakensdvaerder are real-life superheroes."

"In the end, we are only humans with a whole lot of training, though a different training from Navy SEALS or other armies. I doubt they have to know the shamanistic rites of the Tartars or the proper way to disenchant a voodoo doll."

Tara laughed. "Only humans? What a mean description of yourselves."

"Well, compared to the rest of the supernatural world. The first time I saw a harpy, I about peed on myself."

"You saw a harpy? As a harpy?" Tara sounded incredulous. Willow certainly had been, at the time.

"I know they appear human most of the time, as nearly all supernatural beings do. This one was a personal pet of the Shah of Persia. Even then I had to use the special lenses to see her as she truly was."

"So no secret underground chamber?" Tara pressed. "No cool spy toys?"

Willow laughed out loud

(why is she asking this?)

and answered, "It would hardly be the house of a mercenary and superhero without one. There are a few places we didn't quite hit on our first tour. More the reason to have you return, you see?"

"You don't need to fabricate anything to have me return," Tara said, smiling and squeezing Willow's hand. The dark fir and glorious oak trees of Miller's Woods crowded the road as they sped by. "It is a good thing that you live this close to Sunnydale," Tara said.

"Why is that?" Willow asked.

"I am also bound by geography," Tara slowly admitted. "I cannot go further than about fifty miles from the poppy den. If I just push the boundary, I feel enormous pain emanating from my mark. If I breach the boundary, I fall unconscious."

Willow's jaw tightened, almost unconsciously. There was a renewed beast of rage within her breast, a simmering anger directed at Tara's unnamed Master, the same anger she had directed at the Persian who had injured Xander and Giles, and the same anger she had directed at herself after Buffy died. "I really wish I could find this guy and introduce him to Morris and Gisella. Or my rapier."

"Morris and Gisella?" Tara prompted.

Willow kissed her left fist, still warmly clutching Tara's hand. "Morris," she said. Kissing her right fist, she said, "and Gisella."

"You've named your hands?"

"Hey, don't knock it. It comes in handy when you're training in unarmed combat. It's nice to know that even if I appear weaponless, I always have Morris and Gisella."

"I suppose I'm not so much curious about naming hands as the names of your hands themselves."

Willow wasn't quite ready to divulge the etymology of her hand naming to the woman who had captured her heart, so she diverted the question by answering, "Well, Xander named his hands Puddinpop and Chocolate Hoo Hoo. He actually knocked out our instructor that day because the man was so busy laughing."

"I thought laughter was supposed to be medicine."

"Just like silence, laughter can be a blessing and a curse at the same time." Even though her voice had grown pensive, Willow noticed with some delight that Tara was shuffling closer to her, sliding easily over the leather seats that had so recently been strewn with blood drops. That same tangible and volcanic heat was rising from the blonde woman.

Six thousand years.

"Can I ask you something?" Willow asked. "I'm about to change the topic."

"Thanks for the warning. Ask what you will."

"You mentioned earlier that you wished you could crawl back into a volcano. With the use of the word 'back', I concluded that you must have spent some time inside one before now."

"An astute deduction. My favourite volcano is the House of the Sun, the Haleakala of Maui."

By now Willow felt immune to Tara's sensational words. There seemed to be nothing that could shock her anymore. From her work with the Drakensdvaerder she had learned much of the supernatural world; just enough, in fact, to know that there were many things she didn't know. Buffy and then Xander had always tried to protect her from the world; first as high school students battling the hordes of catty Cordettes, then as soldiers in the army of the Drakensdvaerder.

(The harpy sang to one of the Shah's prisoners, and the man went insane.)

Because of their combined efforts, the paranormal world had never come so close to her ever before.

Genies.

Collars.

Volcanoes.

(Why was she so bothered by the Piri Reis map, or my tattoo?)

"So your least favourite would then be...?"

"Definitely Beerenberg on the Jan Mayen Island of Norvegia."

"Okay, Tara, I'll bite. Why would you be in either of these volcanoes?"

Tara's eyes were sparkling, and her cheeks were rosy and her hand was warm. A raw surge of desire crackled through Willow's body. The discovery that she alone was the instigator of such eye-sparkling, such warmth, was almost terrifying. Tara had opened up to her faster than she had anticipated in all of her contemplated designs. A small part of her wondered if she was worthy of such confidences, of such devotion.

Another small part wondered if Tara was playing her, like the six thousand year old collared-by-an-evil-Master djinn that she was.

"And here I thought you had done your homework, Willow," Tara chuckled.

"It's rather hard to discover anything about your race, Tara," Willow replied. "What with the imminent shedding of blood and all." The moment the words left her mouth, Willow would have paid any amount to have them back. Tara blinked and her eyes grew wary, but even that small gesture screamed of the hurt Willow had just inflicted. "I'm sorry, Tara," Willow gushed. "That was stupid of me. I shouldn't have said it."

"I shouldn't have baited you," Tara replied, her eyes slowly returning to normal. "You just seemed to know so much about me, in the den and since then. It's strange, knowing there is a human who knows so much. Strange, and a little dangerous, as well."

Willow thought she knew all about danger. "You don't have to tell me about the volcanoes, or anything else, you know," Willow said in a rush, even though she suspected the curiosity would drive her mad.

Curiosity always did. When she was eight years old she had dismantled the family horloge to study the inner mechanisms of springs and gears. Her parents seemed simultaneously proud that she had so much interest in engineering and horrified at the boundaries she would break in pursuit of such knowledge. They had such dreams for her back then, of conquering the world in academic battles of wit and word. When Willow was drafted after high school into the society that would eventually mean everything to her, they had disowned her entirely. No more becoming of engineers, doctors, or even lawyers. Willow had followed blonde Buffy Summers like a well-heeled dog, only taking scraps and beatings when she could have had the entire academic world presented to her on a platter.

They stuck to their stance even after Willow made her first million dollars, which only saddened Willow more. Rosh Hashanah was always awkward; any messages sent through the Interlink to her parents would get returned, unopened. No wonder Xander and Buffy and their small circle of friends had become her surrogate family.

Giles had become more a father to her than Ira Rosenberg ever would be. And Joyce Summers her adopted mother.

Joyce had left for Tehran today, summoned by Xander for reasons Willow did not know. She was so tempted to find out those reasons, ferreting out that secret as she had so many others.

Curiosity.

"Where are you, Willow Rosenberg?" she heard a voice ask.

Willow squeezed Tara's hand. "Just thinking about my curiosity. Buffy always said it would kill me in the end."

"Tell me a bit more about Buffy?" Tara asked.

A younger and more innocent Willow would have been completely sidetracked by the winsome smile on Tara's face, those seductive sparkling eyes, leading her away from the points of her own questioning, but not this Willow. This Willow who had been hurt too many times, this Willow that harboured a small and liquid fear that Tara would yet betray her.

(Just like Jenny and Giles. Just like everyone else.)

So it was by choice that Willow abandoned her questioning of the volcanoes, making a mental note to ask again later.

Faith had driven them out of Miller's Woods and they were softly cruising through the streets of Sunnydale on the path that had become so familiar to her; the painted fire hydrants, the white-magic shop for tourists, the lovers tree on the edge of the cemetery carved with the initials of over a thousand names enveloped in hearts. The W.R.+X.H. was miniscule in comparison to all the others, tucked behind a swollen bole so Xander nor anyone else could ever find it. After Buffy arrived, she had scoured the tree for the initials X.H.+B.S. but she'd never found them.

"She meant the world to me," Willow said, looking beyond Tara to the achingly familiar streets of the city she grew up in. "It took years for me to understand what I meant to her. I always had this friendship equation in my head, and I was always lacking. I thought I needed her far more than she needed me. She was beautiful, she was witty, she was strong and charming, she had beautiful clothes and a large allowance. Every summer her mom would take her and Dawn places, all over the globe, and she would come back with stories and souvenirs. I wanted to hate her, so many times I wanted to despise her, but she always showed her true nature. In all things she was generous; with her love, with her time, with her money, with her loyalty. I felt I was constantly falling deeper and deeper into debt with her, never able to pay off even in friendship and homework help what she had already given me."

Willow thumbed the emptiness of her finger where the cracker jack ring had perpetually lived. Her finger felt naked, but she was almost surprised to find that speaking of Buffy didn't hurt as it used to.

Tara was sitting right next to her now, their legs touching, and she took their joined hands and put them on Willow's leg. The simple comfort and the wave of heat borne from it shook Willow to the core.

"When did you find out what she thought of you?"

"It started the night of the fair," Willow said slowly. "The remainder happened after Buffy ascended to the position of Marshal-General."

(and then came Riley)

Willow was looking at Tara when she said these words, determined to see Tara's reaction to them.

And there it was. The slightest flinch, the slightest hesitation. A small note of fear, of wariness.

Six thousand years.

(ink drawn on the skin of a gazelle, on a map of the world thought to have perished)

"How old are you, Willow?" Tara asked.

This time Willow had to blink in surprise. "I am thirty one years old."

"Thirty one," Tara echoed. There was wonder in her voice. "I've never been able to completely understand humans," Tara continued. "How it is possible to cram so much into your lives? You are just a blink of an eye to us, you flash into beauty so sudden and so frail, shining briefly like a fallen star before returning to the earth again. How do you live so fiercely?"

Willow knew by the joyous expansion in her breast that this answer required more than words. This truth needed all language to be expressed. "Because one life is all that we are given," Willow said, and even though her ribs crackled in pain, shortening her breath and igniting her veins, she leaned in to Tara, and there was no hesitation now, no chasm of reason to separate them. She heard Tara's light gasp as she leaned in to kiss her, and then there was only Tara's lips, her teeth and her tongue, her mouth a silken cave to plunge into.

And heat.

Willow ignored the pain of her chest as Tara wrapped her arms around her, one of Tara's heated hands near her neck, the other fluttering down her shoulder blades, and down, tracing a line of fire along the curve of her spine, down to the flaring hemline of her shirt. Willow was quite sure she wouldn't be able to contain the passion rising inside her, a tidal wave to meet Tara's volcanic heat.

But then Tara moaned softly, and opened her mouth to Willow's gently questing tongue.

And then, of all things, Tara leaned back, just slightly, yet she pulled with her strong and lithe hands, until Willow found herself nearly in her lap, kissing her fast and ferocious now, little sound but the gasps of stolen breaths, the hint of captured sighs, their world this little car bubble with tinted windows.

Pulling away just long enough to breathe properly, Willow's lips began a more studious appraisal of Tara's face; her cheeks, her nose, her lips, touching each with her own rosebud mouth. It was a sensual seduction of all her senses; Willow could barely imagine that she was being so brazen, so, so...

Hot.

No fumbling, no excuses, no short-sightedness or any hint of delay. Tara was here, and Tara was responsive, and the joy of kissing Tara, of feeling her hot fingers, of feeling the thunder of her heartbeat, was the most exquisite thing Willow had ever experienced.

The car rolled to a stop, and they finally paused. Pulling away to look at Tara, at her now-disheveled hair, her lips and the slight sheen on her skin, Willow only wanted to continue her discoveries, and abate her curiosity.

Six thousand years.

There would be time.

Dibs??

Damn! Well, now I'm curious about volcanoes... and a bunch of other things. But I know there'll be answers to everything in due time, so I shall wait.

This story gets more interesting by the minute.

Curiouser and curiouser.

I'm the biggest newbie feedbackerer ever so please accept my fervent apologies in advance. My noobness aside, I found this update rather wonderful because all kinds of different things were happening on different levels. There was a kind of dichotomy between what Willow was feeling and thinking and what she was saying and doing on one level which added to both the sweetness and the tenuousness of the connection between the two girls. Then on another level there was information kind of stuff with details about Willows relationship with her parents and some more enlightening examples of the supernatural aspects of their world. Oh, and Willow pondering the purpose of Joyce's trip. Plus they were all drivey and on the way to the poppy den which is in itself rather suspenseful. There was a nice mixture of everything pretty much. I swear though the ratio of information to what-the-frak factor in this story is like 1:76 billion.....Okay, I may be exaggerating slightly on that but it's definitely significant and yet definitely most delightfully awesome.

Thank you for another great update.
