:read

As if to make it more clear that Willow and Faith go at it like cats and dogs figures that they'd get a cat and a dog as pets...

And what's up with Faith's almost obsession with interrupting Tara and Willow everytime they are together? Sometimes it seems like she's keeping track of what they're doing just to go and interrupt... I understand that she's protective of Tara but she needs to give her some room too.

It's good to see that Tara and Willow are going slow but sure in every step even though sometimes it seems like the only reason they're going slow it's because they're being constantly interrupted :hmm

Cool update. More soon please!

@Laragh- Thanks ^.^ Uninterrupted time is promised soon! Thanks for commenting and enjoy this next chapter!

@Zampsa1975- Quality time is promised! Enjoy this next chapter!

@Egnalos- I'll touch more on that later, but Tara didn't go completely in depth to what Hannah did to her. Yeah, they're taking it slow, but they're going even slower because of constant interruptions. ^.^' Enjoy this next chapter!

@VivaLaMegaaan - It's a good thing then Tara's a pacifier and Willow's a dog for her so she listens! ^.^ Enjoy this next chapter!

PART 17
--------------------------------------------------
“I wish I could stay another day.”

Tara smiled, and hugged Dawn tighter. “Me too.”

“Sorry about...y'know, your hand.”

“Dawnie.”

“Not my fault, I know. But everything seems to be my fault.”

“Hey.” Tara pulled back and tilted her chin up so she could look her in the eye. “You’re a bright, imaginative young woman who’s a little too smart for her own good. Not everything’s your fault.”

Dawn beamed, and threw her arms around Tara. “I’m going to miss you.”

“Come out and visit sometime, then. I’ll look forward to it. ”

“Hey Dawn, stop hogging Tara! Others need some Tara-time too.” On the glare shot in his direction, Xander hastily backpedalled. “Beecaaausee we all love her so much. Because she’s so amazing- an amazing friend, and....shutting up now.” Hanging his head in mock shame, Xander stepped forward meekly to give Tara a hug, mindful of Willow’s watchful eyes following him.

Buffy elbowed past them all, jabbing Willow in the ribs as she did. “Oh, lighten up, Wil. Tara doesn’t feel for Xander that way. ‘Sides, you know she loves you.”

“That’s for sure,” Faith muttered, “Do you know how many times I’ve interrupted them?”

“O-kay. Before we get into the details of my best friend’s sex life in a crowded airport, let’s board that plane.” Buffy pulled Tara in for a quick hug. “Be safe. And hold onto her, please; she’s the happiest I’ve ever seen her when she’s with you.”

Tara nodded. “And Buffy? Try to treat Dawn more like a grown-up and not a kid. S-she resents that. And it might drive a w-w-wedge between you.”

Buffy was quiet for a moment, considering, then nodded. “Thank-you.” She pulled away, and was promptly dragged into a tight embrace from Faith. “Holy shit, Faith!”

“I’m gonna miss ya, B. No one is as fun to mess with as you. ‘Cept maybe Tara when she’s all horny, and-”

Faith!” Tara squeaked, mortified.

Anya patted her arm. “It’s okay; I get pissed easily when I’m horny, too.”

Tara covered her face with her hands, ears burning, and groaned. Willow put an arm around her waist, and pulled her in close. “Ignore her.”

“Figured on that.” But Tara smiled, and kissed her cheek, already feeling better.

The group exchanged a last round of goodbyes and hugs, and even a few tears. No one was surprised when Buffy threw her arms around Riley and kissed him, but everyone felt a little shock when Faith yanked her around and kissed her herself, pulling away with a cheeky, mischievous dare-you-to-flip-out-on-me smile; pure fun. Buffy stumbled away after that, still in shock, and the others eventually drifted off after her and boarded the plane with one last wave.

“What was that?!” Tara demanded when Faith walked back over to her, grinning like the Cheshire Cat.

Faith shrugged. “You and Willow make it look like so much fun. I was curious.”

“So you picked Buffy as your test subject?”

“Well, I woulda picked you, but Willow would’ve gutted me.”

“Damn straight,” Willow muttered, pulling Tara in possessively.

“You. Are. Insane,” Tara said quietly. “You probably traumatized her!”

“Are you saying I’m a bad kisser?”

“How would I know? And why didn’t you just ask her instead of just going all invade-y in her personal space?”

Faith stared at her for a moment, smirking. “‘Invade-y’?”

“You try having a girlfriend who has a way with words. It rubs off on you.”

Willow blushed.

Tara glared at the brunette. “You need to get out your damn cell phone, and call her. Set it straight before she’s permanently damaged.”

“You are such a bitch sometimes, Tara.”

“Hey!” Willow protested fiercely, “That’s rich coming from the cleavage-y slut-bomb.”

Faith was quiet for a moment, and her eyes went dangerous flat. “Now that,” She said quietly, “was rude.”

“Faith, no!” Tara lunged between the two of them before they could attack, forcing them apart. “Enough. I’m sick of you two fighting so much! Faith, go out for the night. Spend the night at someone’s house if you want; I don’t care. Just spend the night out, and if you need a ride, Riley will pick you up. Alright?”

A slow smile crept across her face; already she was over her minor temper. “Wicked cool, T.”

“Do you need any money, Faith?” Willow asked, seeing her opportunity for some quality alone/not- interrupted- by- Faith time with Tara, and seizing it.

“Nah, it’s cool.”

“Okay. So we’ll see you tonight or tomorrow?” Tara kept her voice even and calm, light.

“Five-by-five.” Without waiting for anyone to say anything, she sauntered off into the crowd of people, heading for the exit.

“Well, that was quick thinking.” Willow stretched up on her tip-toes for a quick kiss of approval. “I like that.”

“Mmm.” Tara squeezed her hand. “It ends an argument and gives us all a break from her.”

“Hallelujah.” Riley smiled over at them.

They both smiled back for a moment, and then Willow’s cell phone- loudly- began to ring Good Girls Go Bad. Everyone within easy hearing distance turned to stare at her, and Willow stiffened, flushing.

Tara watched her as she fumbled to get her phone out of her pocket and answer it, trying to stifle her giggles.“Oh, god, Wil.”

“I didn’t- I mean I- Really, I swear-!” Willow squinted at the number, and then scowled, flipping open her phone. “Faith!”

“Hey, sexy.” Willow could hear the smirk in her voice. “What do you think of your new ring tone?”

“Ugh! I am going to kill you tonight! And don’t call me sexy!”

Tara’s eyebrows pulled together, as she could only hear one side of the conversation. She reached for the phone, ready to show her best friend just how much of a bitch she could be, but Willow waved her off, mouthing: “I got this.”

“No need to be bitchy. Just phoned to remind you to feed Toby tonight and if you hurt Tara, I’m gonna kick your ass so hard it’ll knock you into the next century.”

Willow made a face. “Cute, Faith. I won’t hurt her. Now piss off, and stop meddling in our business.”

“Oooh, cat’s got her claws out. I’ll be back tonight. You hurt her, you pay. Remember that.”

Willow opened her mouth to retort, but Tara grabbed the phone before she could, growling into it: “Piss off, Faith. It’s our business only, and you may be my best friend, but you’re being a real bitch to both me and my girlfriend, and I don’t enjoy that. You continue to be a problem, you’re going to have to leave. Understood?” Without waiting for a reply, she snapped the phone shut, and handed it back to Willow, eerily calm. “Okay, I’m done.”

Willow stared at her, wide-eyed. “Me-ow.”

Tara smiled, and blushed, taking her girlfriend’s hand again. “It’s really getting annoying how she keeps checking up on us. How old are we, five?”

Willow shrugged, but her face hardened when her cell phone went off again. She jerked it from her pocket, not bothering to check the number, and snapped: “For the love of God, Faith, just f-ing- OH! Hi, Cordy.” Her eyes widened again with mortification, and Tara clapped a hand to her mouth, horrified. “Huh? Oh, that? It’s nothing; just my annoying ranch hand. Yeah, the writing’s been good. How many words today? ...Three hundred and fifty-two, but I had to see off some friends today. Yeah, Buffy’s fine. No, she’s not a millionaire. No, I won’t remind her that you’re much richer, and prettier than her, because you’re not.” She was quiet for a moment, and then her eyes went wide. “Well, no need to use that kind of language. Okay, okay, I’m sorry. Why’re you calling, anyways?”

Another stretch of silence; Tara smothered a smile at the intense look of concentration on her girlfriend’s face. Then Willow stiffened, and Tara frowned, puzzled.

“No way. You’re kidding, right? No! No, that can’t be true! That’s just so- no, I’m not upset, I’m...well, I need a better word than thrilled right now, but I seem to be stuck in a permanent babble and my mind’s not working right, and oh my god, you can’t be serious! Really? November? That soon? That’s amazing! Thanks, Cordy! Yeah, I’ll get some writing done. Seriously. No, I won’t end up with my girlfriend wrapped around me this time. Honest. But seriously, thanks. Talk to you soon.” Willow shut the phone, and stumbled a few steps back to sit down in one of the vacant chairs nearby.

“Willow? Sweetie?” Tara followed her, a little concerned by the lack of color in her girlfriend’s face. She knelt beside her, studying her shocked expression. “Wil? Honey, are you okay? Will-Mmmph!”

Without warning, Willow grabbed her chin, and pulled her into a heated kiss, right there in front of the whole airport- as most of the people nearby were watching them after the whole phone episode. When she pulled away, she was crying. “Oh my god...Tara...Tara, I love you so much!”

“Ummm...” Tara’s brow furrowed. “I love you, too, Wil, and I know I’m usually a bit slow to understand how your mind works, but now I’m completely lost. What the hell’s going on?”

Willow looked up from their entwined hands, eyes shining. “Saving Grace! They’re turning the whole series into movies! Filming starts in a month and the movie’s coming out next November!”

Tara stared at her, mind blank. “So soon?” She managed to get out.

“I know, that’s what I said! Apparently Cordy gave them the thumbs-up about three months ago, and they’ve been writing the script and everything! She finally decided to tell me today.”

“I...” Tara’s face lit up, and she pulled the smaller girl into a tight embrace. “Wil, honey, that’s amazing!”

“I know, baby, I know! God, I can’t believe it!”

“Me neither.” Tara turned her head slightly, and kissed her neck. “I’m so proud of you.”

“OH!” Willow jumped up suddenly, but, since she had a tight hold on Tara’s hands, she dragged her up with her. “Oops. Sorry. But I just remem-uh, realized the perfect way to celebrate! We’re going out to dinner!”

“What? But, Wil, can’t we just eat at home? I mean, I know we’re no five-star restaurant, but with Toby and Miss Kitty, and the budget so tight-”

“We’re going out,” Willow answered stubbornly. “You’ve been my girlfriend for how long and we’ve never actually had a real date? How pathetic is that?”

“Well...” How was she supposed to argue with that? “But, Wil, can we afford it?”

“Of course we can. Besides, I sort of...already made reservations.”

“You made reservations?”

“...at Luigi’s.”

“At Luig- WHAT?! Willow, that’s the most expensive restaurant in town!” Tara gasped.

“You deserve it.” Willow peeked up meekly, a little surprised at her girlfriend’s reaction. She had known Tara wouldn’t approve of spending so much money just so she could have dinner, but she hadn’t anticipated this strong of a reaction. “Besides, it’s your birthday.”

“No it’s not!”

“But we’re pretending it’s your birthday. Have some imagination.” Willow was using her determined tone again, and tightened her hand around Tara, pulling her over to where Riley was waiting. “You deserve to have a nice meal, and since I can’t cook to save my own life, I’m gonna let the experts do it, even if it did cost a lot.”

“How much?” Tara had reeled in her anger, and was calm again, expressionless.

“Huh?”

“How much did it cost?”

“...Two hundred dollars.”

Two hund- Oh, Willow, you’re gonna get it later.”

Willow managed a smirk. “Is that a threat or a promise?”

Tara’s gaze was steely. “Both,” She said, but then her face softened, and she pulled her girlfriend in for a quick kiss. “You’re crazy to spend that much on me.”

“Crazy, yes. But only because I spent that little on you.”

“Oh, you are gonna get it later.”

“Okay, that one was a promise.”

Tara laughed in spite of herself. Despite her initial anger at her girlfriend’s ridiculous willingness to spend huge amounts of money on her, she was flattered by her thoughtfulness, and tingled with anticipation for dinner. A date- her first real date with Willow. A real chance to spend the evening with together and just focus on each other, with the bonus of spaghetti.

And the best part was Faith wasn’t there to interrupt them.

Ha. Bonus of spaghetti. I love spaghetti.

Awesomeness for their first real date, even if Willow is spending a lot. Tara totally deserves it.

Loved all the interaction in this chapter and can't wait for more.

Anya... Way to be reassuring :p

And then this part

Faith shrugged. “You and Willow make it look like so much fun. I was curious.”

“So you picked Buffy as your test subject?”

“Well, I woulda picked you, but Willow would’ve gutted me.”

“Damn straight,” Willow muttered, pulling Tara in possessively.

Sooo good. Faith really is a pain when she wants to be...

Willow opened her mouth to retort, but Tara grabbed the phone before she could, growling into it: “Piss off, Faith. PART 18
------------------------------

Tara was quiet on the drive to the restaurant. She was in the backseat, Riley driving, and Willow up front to give directions. Willow filled most of the silence, needing only one-or-two word answers to prod her forward. Mostly she talked to Riley about her book- he was curious, having never read them- but her eyes constantly flickered to Tara in the rear-view mirror, gauging Tara’s expression. No doubt waiting for another explosion. Tara only smiled pleasantly back each time; that seemed to brighten her mood.

Eventually, they rolled up to the restaurant. Willow scrambled out of the passenger seat to open Tara’s door for her, and offer her hand. “Miss Maclay,” She said sombrely.

Tara smiled, and accepted the hand with a grin and an eye roll. “Oh, Wil.”

Willow grinned back, and helped her out of the truck, pulling her in for a quick kiss as she did. “Ready for dinner?”

Tara quirked an eyebrow at her. “Am I?”

“Probably not.” Willow leaned past Tara to smile at Riley in the mirror. “See you later, then. We’ll catch a cab, ‘kay?”

“You sure?”

“Yup. You should probably be home in case Faith calls. Or the police. Ya know.”

“Yeah. I will. Good luck with that one. And, a tip? Don’t spend too much. It pisses her off.”

“Standing right here, Riley.” Tara mock-glared at him.

“Just trying to nip the whole girlfriend-pissed-off-at-girlfriend thing in the bud. See ya later, Tare-bear.”

Don’t call me that!”

Riley just chuckled, and shook his head. “Bye, Wil.”

“See ya.” Willow slammed the door, and waved as he drove off. Tara kept her hands stubbornly at her side until Willow looped an arm through her’s, and led her to the front door.

“That nickname really pisses you off. Does that mean I’m not allowed to call you it?”

“You probably wouldn’t want to.” Tara peeked over at Willow, afraid she’d said too much.

Willow didn’t miss the look, and, of course, that intrigued her. “And why not?”

"You don’t wanna know.”

“Yeah I do. It’s about you, isn’t it?”

“Wil...”

“Tara.” Willow pulled them both to a stop. “Please.”

Tara sighed, and raised her shoulders in a tentative shrug. “It’s what Hannah used to call me. Faith picked it up because it annoyed me, and then she just kept calling me it. I don’t know why, since even a mention of Hannah turns her into Miss Psycho Pep Squad.”

One side of Willow’s mouth lifted in a half-hearted smile as they started forward again. “Ya know, I like that. I might use it in my writing one day. Miss Psycho Pep Squad. Heh. Rosenberg. Willow,” She added when the hostess smiled at them in welcome.

Tara watched her carefully as they were led to their table, seated, and given menus. Willow remained cheerful, humming to herself as she scanned the menu, oblivious to Tara’s examination except to give her a brief smile over the top of her menu when she sensed her gaze. So Tara smiled, finally relaxing, and opened her menu, taking a sip of the water the waitress had placed in front of her.

As soon as she read the first line, she immediately spit out all the liquid she had in her mouth.

“Tara?” Willow asked, concerned as she watched her girlfriend choke and sputter, coughing spastically. “Baby? Are you okay?” Her brow crinkled.

“You-I-can’t-you-so-I-believe-dead!” was all Tara managed to get out.

“Umm...Tara...?”

“Willow! These prices-insane!”

“What do you mean?” Willow’s forehead creased further as she tried to figure out how she’d upset her girlfriend.

“These prices! They mock my pay check! No, scratch that! They destroy my pay check, drag it to the bathroom, give it a couple of good swirlies, then dump it in the garbage can!”

Willow was quiet for a moment, studying her. “...Maybe you were right about my vocabulary rubbing off on you.”

“Willow!” Tara whispered, as her whole outburst had drawn the attraction of the couple at the table next to theirs, “I can’t ever pay you back for this!”

“Are you implying that you need a bigger pay check?”

“Wil!”

“Okay, okay, sorry. And who said you were paying me back?” Willow frowned.

“Just because you’re a bestselling author, doesn’t mean you have to take me to big fancy, restaurants.”

“But I love you,” Willow protested, still confused by Tara’s anger.

“Willow.” Tara reached across the table, and took her girlfriend’s hand.

“There are other ways to show me that. I love you more when you burn my breakfast than when you take me to a big, fancy restaurant. Because you did it yourself. You make me laugh, to see you standing there with a blackened mess on the floor, the firing alarm screaming, looking so sheepish when Faith, Riley, and I came down, half-awake and wondering what the hell you were doing. It’s simply you. You, you’re what I love. What you do. Not what you buy.”

“Ahem.” Both girls looked up to see the smirking waitress- reminding Tara strongly of Faith- with her pen and notepad ready. “I, on the other hand, like it better when you spend. Ready to order?”

Both of them blushed, and Tara pulled her hand away, even though the waitress didn’t seem bothered in the slightest. “Yeah. We are.”

***

Willow watched Tara carefully through the whole ordering, though she had pulled out her familiar calm-and-collected mask, the one she’d been seeing a lot lately. But when the waitress turned to Willow and Tara caught her eye a gave her a you’re-still-in-trouble-but-I-love-you-so-I’m-letting-it-go smirk, Willow knew all was forgiven.

She ordered a large salad, and when Tara asked for a small, she adamantly refused that, and asked the waitress for a large and a large bowl of soup for them to share. The waitress smirked at her, and shook her head, but took the orders with a smug: “As long as you’re spending money, I’m happy.”

Willow watched her saunter away, then turned to her girlfriend. “Does she vaguely remind you of someone?”

“Willow! I can’t eat that much; why’d you order that for me?”

“Buffy, maybe? She can get a little confident.” Willow continued to speak aloud as if Tara had never spoke. “Nah. Someone else.”

“Wil, are you even listening to me?!”

“I got it! It’s Faith!”

“Willow!”

“Calm down, I’m listening. You can’t eat that much. Well, I’m saying you can.”

“You trying to fatten me up?”

“Maybe. It gives me peace of mind to know you actually ate.”

Tara frowned. “Since when have I been anorexic?”

“Never, as far as I know.” Willow peered at her carefully.

Very funny.”

The waitress placed the food in front of them, smirked at Tara, winked and Willow, and left without commenting.

Willow stared after her. “Definitely Faith.” She pushed one of the salads over to Tara. “You’re going to eat every bite,” She told her stubbornly.

Tara looked down at the large plat- her stomach rumbled unhappily at the wait- and then back at her girlfriend, who was still watching her, waiting for her to speak. They stared each other down for a few minutes, then Tara sighed, rolled her eyes, and picked up her fork. “You’re impossible.”

Willow beamed at her, and picked up her own fork. “Yeah, I know.”

They ate their salads in silence, occasionally studying the other when they though they weren’t looking. It didn’t feel awkward, like a first date, but comfortable, easy, like it had always been. Willow smiled at that. Easy. It hadn’t always been easy, but they were together now, weren’t they? That was all that mattered.

The soup was also consumed in silence, occasionally broken by one or two teasing remarks. Finally, it was time for dessert, and both girls looked at the other, and grinned.

“Brownie Sundae?”

Tara smiled at her girlfriend’s enthusiasm. “We’ll split it.”

***

The cab home was quiet. Tara and Willow sat close to each other in the backseat, holding hands, Willow’s head on Tara’s shoulder. They didn’t speak, just stayed close, satisfied with their first date. Willow wriggled a bit closer, and Tara smiled, wrapping her arm around her.

Because Tara was ready.

She’d never been so sure of anything in her life. She knew she loved Willow. She knew that her life had been permanently altered by the amazing girl sitting beside her, changed in the best way.

My girl. Tara smiled to herself.

It was different, she had realized, than her and Hannah. She and Hannah, it hadn’t been love- at least not for Hannah. Tara had loved her; Hannah had only lusted after her. But even the love she had felt for Hannah was different than the love she felt for Willow. This love was deeper, permanent. Life-changing. Amazing. Wonderful. She wanted to spend the rest of her life with Willow, she realized right there in that cab.

She had shared almost all of herself with her girlfriend. Now she was ready to share the rest.

The house was dark when they pulled up, and the truck was gone. Tara smiled to herself when she noticed how creepy the old house looked, like one of those Victorian ones all the kids were afraid to walk by.

“Riley must’ve gotten a call,” Willow mused as she paid the driver, and slid out after Tara.

“Hmm. I really hope it was from Faith, and not from the police. It seems a little early for Faith to call, though.” Tara’s forehead creased with concern, and she bit her bottom lip.

“How much do you wanna bet she got hauled in for getting in a bar fight?”

“Willow!” Tara smacked her arm half-heartedly. “She’s my best friend!”

“You sure weren’t acting like it today on the phone.” Willow arched one eyebrow at her as she unlocked the front door. “Why do you bother to lock this thing? It’s not like there’s someone nearby to steal it.” She opened the door, and stepped aside so Tara could go in first.

Tara smiled as she did so, flipping on the lights as she did. Toby, barking enthusiastically, came running for them, and Tara crouched to meet him. “The closest neighbour is four miles over, and that Jamie looks like a thief to me.”

“She’s five!” Willow laughed, and shook her head. “And every time I see her, she’s in bright colors. If she’s a thief, I’m a thief.”

Tara smiled her crooked smile as Toby licked her face enthusiastically. “I would use that opportunity to deliver an incredibly sappy line about how you’ve stolen my heart, but I really don’t want to scare you off now.”

Willow laughed, and turned on the last light. “Thanks for that. Where’s Miss Kitty?”

“Probably upstairs.” Tara came up behind her girlfriend, wrapping her arms around her waist, and resting her chin on her shoulder. “Thank-you. For today.”

Willow perked up at that. “Really? You seemed...well, to put it bluntly, kinda pissed.”

Tara laughed. “I could never be mad at you. I was just...flattered that you’d spent so much on me, and kind of in shock.”

Kind of in shock?”

“Kind of in shock that you would bother to arrange all that,” Tara admitted softly.

Willow turned in her arms to face her, still puzzled. “Why would you be in shock?”

“No one’s ever...done so much for me. And it wasn’t even my birthday even though this is what it was for.”

“You do realize that because you admitted this, I’m going to go out of my way to do nice things for you?”

“Well, how ‘bout I make it up to you? Right now?”

Willow brightened. “Are you keeping your promise?”

“Yes. I am.” Tara smiled sensually at her, and Willow shivered, knowing without a doubt was going to follow. “Shall we go upstairs?”

“Upstairs. Y-yeah, that would be nice.” Willow’s breath suddenly caught in her throat, and Tara studied her.

“You okay?”

“Y-yeah, I’m fine. Finey Mc- uh, Tara, I’m scared.”

Tara kissed her gently, then pulled her into a comforting hug. “You don’t have to be.”

“B-but I don’t k-k-know how to...do this...what I should...I've never...Oh, god, what if I’m not good enough?”

Tara shook her head. “You’re always good enough. Better than good. Amazing. As for how to act, I have no idea, either. But I trust you. Do you trust me?”

“Of course.”

“Do you?”

“With my life.”

“Then we’re going to be okay.” Tara pulled away from the hug, arms resting comfortable around Willow’s waist, and kissed her again. “I promise.”

“Tara?”

“Uh-huh?”

Willow peeked up at her, half hopeful, half sheepish. “Can we go upstairs now?”

Tara chuckled. “I thought you’d never ask.”

That was cute!

Lol at Tara going crazy over the prices. I mean, Willow was just spoiling her girl, it's totally deserved.

Poor nervous Willow. They'll be fine though, at least they're both newbies (that's why I always write them as first timers, too, it's way easier to convey the balance or whatever)

Anyway, loved the update and eagerly awaiting a new one!

PART 19
----------------------------------

Tara traced the line of Willow’s jaw, and smiled as she watched her girlfriend sleep. She had checked the clock a few minutes after Willow had finally drifted off, nestled in the hollow of her shoulder, and found the time to be about three in the morning.

She’d finally done it. She’d opened herself completely to Willow, and Willow had done the same. She closed her eyes, and just remembered for a moment, remembered the sweet, tender touch, and the look on Willow’s face as she’d looked at her.

She’d made her feel beautiful. She hadn’t felt that way in a long time.

Tara smiled again and opened her eyes as Willow sighed, stirred, and rolled closer, her arm finding its way around her waist, and ran her fingers through Willow’s hair, watching her girlfriend grin goofily in her sleep.

“Don’t be silly, Buffy,” She mumbled sleepily, “Vampires aren’t real.” Then her forehead creased, and her muscles tensed; she grasped at the bare skin of Tara’s hip almost desperately. Tara frowned, and ran a thumb across Willow’s cheek, wondering what had upset her girlfriend.

Then Willow relaxed, and grinned again. “Take that, evil frogs...all mine...Tara...” The last word was a sigh. Tara chuckled softly, careful to keep the volume of her laugh down, even though she was sure Willow was completely dead to the world.

She stroked Willow’s cheek once more, then looked at the window, contemplating. She sighed, and, after moving Willow’s wandering hand carefully off and slipping her head off her shoulder, shrugged on a robe, and headed for the door.

Willow whimpered quietly, and Tara paused, wondering if she should leave her, but then Willow calmed herself again, and Tara, after pulling the robe closer, continued on her way down the hall.

She entered Faith’s room without hesitation. She wasn’t surprised that Faith’s bed was empty, or that the window was open. She had expected it. She scanned the room quickly, looking for some sort of disturbance, some sort of fit of rage, but found it as disorderly as usual. That was a good sign. Tara sighed, and headed for the window.

It took a little effort for her to climb out; the robe was short, and even if there was no one behind her, she was still embarrassed about it. She kicked a stool that she found near the bed over the dresser pushed against the wall, scrambled up onto the dresser using that, and carefully slipped out the window.

Faith was sitting on the overhang, knees drawn up, chin resting on her knees, staring out at the stars. She didn’t even turn when Tara carefully eased herself across the roof and sat down beside her. “Done screwing your girlfriend?”

Tara blushed. “D-d-did you...?”

“Hear you guys? Are you kidding? Riley put earplugs in.”

Tara frowned at the brunette seated beside her. Normally, Faith would have taken the opportunity to tease her to no end, but she had spoken with almost no emotion.

“...Faith? What’s up?”

Faith snorted quietly to herself. “What’s up? Riley’s got Buffy. You’ve got Willow. She’s the love of your life, and she just fu-”

“Faith. Please. Skip the details of my sex life.”

Faith rolled her eyes. “-screwed your brains out. I’m sitting out here on the roof staring at the sky. Don’t you see what’s happening? You’re becoming me, and I’m becoming you!”

“Since when have you ever stayed with someone more than one day? And what’s wrong with being me?” Tara was indignant.

“Exactly. I’ve had all these one night stands, and they’ve been a helluva lot of fun, but I’ve never had anything...stable. Anything that’s lasted more than one night. And then I look at what you have, with Willow, and all the stupid, gag-worthy things you do for each other, like Willow buying you a cat, or taking you out to dinner, or you making her those stupid funny-shape pancakes...and I want that. I want it bad. Why? I’ve never wanted it before. I just don’t...” She trailed off, and shook her head, wiping quickly at her eyes. Tara was surprised to see tears welling up in her eyes.

She sighed again, and then shifted closer. Just like she always did with people who really needed it, she wrapped her arms around Faith, and pulled her into a side hug, letting Faith rest her head on her shoulder. “God, Faith. How much alcohol did you have?”

“I’m serious, Tara!”

“I know. That’s what makes me so proud.”

“Well, it’s not helping me. This is not cool. Fix me, already!”

“Faith, I can’t ‘fix you’. It’s only natural that you want something long-term.”

“No, it’s not. I’m sick. Very sick. You gotta help me, Tara! It’s getting so bad...” Faith’s tears soaked her shoulder, and her whole body shuddered with sobs. Tara tried to hold back her shock and concentrate on her obviously-grieving friend.

“You’re lonely, Faith. Why don’t you just look for someone to spend your life with instead of to just have sex with?”

Faith snorted again. “Who would want me?”

“Do I even dignify that question with an answer?”

There was a long moment of silence, and then Faith grinned slowly.

“Thanks, Tare-bear.”

“Eh. It’s what I’m here for, right? Besides, I think Buffy was staring at you when she was leaving.”

“Well, no shit. I traumatized her, didn’t I?”

“Not that kinda look. A different look. But if you wanna play that way, fine. I’ll keep possible details of your Princess Charming to myself.”

Faith was quiet, and then she took a deep breath. “I’m really sorry about how I’ve been acting. I’ve been such a bitch instead of being your best friend, and not being happy for you that you’ve found someone special. I was just...well, kinda jealous, and I was afraid, after Hannah...” The words were rushed, blurted out, but sincere.

Tara smiled. “I know. And it’s okay. You were just protecting me. Thanks for that.”

A little shudder ran through Faith. “I...still have nightmares about it. Walking in...seeing her standing over you with that piece of glass...your blood everywhere...” She shivered again.

Tara shivered with her. “Me too.”

Faith finally sighed, and detangled herself from Tara. “Alright. Enough of that. I’m willing to bet my fine piece of ass that your lady’s waiting for you.”

Tara laughed, and squeezed her hand. “I don’t know about that. When I left she was mumbling something about vampires and evil frogs.”

Faith laughed, and shook her head. “She’s a special one. Go see Willow.”

“You called her Willow.” Tara stared at her, bemused that Faith had called Willow by her real name for the first time.

“Duh. Ain’t that her name?”

“Yeah, but you usually-oh, never mind.” Tara smiled, and gave her hand a last squeeze, then stood up. “You going to be okay?”

“Five-by-five. But seriously. Get out of here before I kick your ass through that window.”

“You’re a real pal. ” But Tara headed towards the window anyways, shaking her head.

“And Tara?”

“Yeah?”

“Pull down your robe. I love you, but not that much.”

Tara blushed all the way back to her room.

***

Willow woke with a soft cry.

It took her a minute to even realize where she was. The nightmare had been so real, so vivid. It was hard to separate herself from the horror.

Tara disappearing in that fire. God. That nightmare would be enough to stop her writing for a long time, possibly forever. Willow squeezed her eyes shut tight, and breathed deeply through her mouth, sweaty hands curling into fists as she tried to block the images she knew weren’t real, but still terrified her anyways.

Stupid book. Did I have to kill Grace off like that? She’s so much Tara- which is all coincidence, but still. So much like her. And, god, she was right, I-wait.

Her hand, which had been stretching across the bed, automatically reaching for Tara to reassure herself that she was there and safe, came in contact with empty air.

She was suddenly wide awake. Rolling to the side to make certain that her earlier realization was true, her throat suddenly went tight with fear.

Where was Tara?

She was probably overreacting. Tara could have slipped out of bed for five seconds. She could be down the hall, or just downstairs, helping a completely wasted Faith up the stairs. She could be in the bathroom, two doors down.

Or she could be laying somewhere, face-down, suffocating in her own blood as Oz, Hannah, or even her father skulked triumphantly around her.

Willow pressed one of her fists against her mouth to keep herself from screaming. The word she was mentally screaming still came out, but softer, even though it was high with fear. “Tara?”

No answer.

Okay, Willow, don’t spaz. Don’t. Just calm down. She’s probably just down the hall, or getting a drink, or- ah, screw that! I’m spazzing.

“Tara?” Willow called again, once more, just for good measure. Her voice broke.

Okay. Now it was time to panic. She bolted upright, clutching the blanket to her chest, and did a quick scan of the room, searching for any sign of a struggle or-worse- any blood. Nothing. The room looked the same as always.

Okay. That relaxed the iron fist around her heart slightly until a dark voice in the back of her head reminded her that Tara could have been downstairs.

The iron fist squeezed tighter. She couldn’t breathe.

Tara.

She was just about to get up, and run for Faith- if anyone was to find Tara, Faith would hunt her down like a bloodhound and tear apart whoever took her- when the door opened, and Tara slipped in.

Oh my god!” Willow flung herself off the bed, forgetting the blanks, and threw her arms around Tara, kissing every part of her that she could reach.

“Willow? Wil, calm down. Wil...you’re crying...?”

Finally, Willow just stopped, and hugged her girlfriend for a moment, took comfort in the feeling of her warm body, and the steady rise and fall of her chest, just clung to her. Then she pulled away, and wiped at her eyes. Tara watched her with concern.

“It’s nothing. Just had a nightmare, and then I woke up, and you weren’t here, and...” Willow trailed off, and laughed shakily, embarrassed by her overreaction. “I’m sorry.” She took a step back.

“Hey.” Tara took her hand, and pulled her right back, wrapping her arms around her. “If you had a bad dream, we could talk about it. But we might want to get into bed, or at least you put a robe on, first, because Faith is awake. And sober.”

“Oh.” Was a sober Faith worse than a drunk one? Apparently so. Willow took a moment to consider, then nodded, and stepped back again, this time taking Tara’s hand in her’s, and walking back to the bed. Tara couldn’t help herself; as they walked, her girlfriend gave her an unintentionally blatant view, and that made her grin. But, of course this was forgotten as soon as Willow turned back to her, and the moonlight made the lingering tears on her cheeks glisten.

Tara helped her gently onto the bed, and pulled the quilt over her. Then she dropped her robe, and slipped into the other side, pulling Willow to her so she could kiss each of the remaining tears away. “Now, what was so bad about this dream?”

“N-nothing. It’s stupid.”

“It must have been something if you were so afraid when you woke up and I wasn’t here.”

That was true. But Willow wasn’t going to admit it. Stubbornly, she kept her mouth shut.

Tara’s face grew sad. “Was I that bad?”

“What?” Willow blinked at her, shocked at the idea. “Baby, you were amazing. It...I...” Willow sighed, and shook her head. “I just had a nightmare...something bad happened to you, and when I woke up, and you weren’t there...I just panicked.”

“...Faith is influencing you too much.”

“What, I’m not allowed to worry about my girlfriend when three psychopaths have it in for her?”

“First of all, those...psychopaths...can’t hurt me. Secondly, you worry too much. And third, what do you have against frogs?”

Willow blinked. “I’m...sorry...?”

“Well, you were mumbling about frogs, and being evil...and I was just wondering. You don’t have to answer.”

“Well...I don’t know. They’re all...bumpy, and squishy, and green, and...gross. Ick.” It made Willow shudder just to think about it.

“...Honey, that’s a toad.”

Willow frowned in protest, and shook her head. “Nooo. Toads are all dry.”

“Well, yes, but toads are bumpy. Frogs aren’t. So which is it, frogs or toads?”

“Does it matter? They’re both gross, and they’re both scary, regardless of their various skin deformations.”

Tara laughed. “Willow, you’re-”

“Ridiculous, yes. Tara?”

“Yeah?”

“I love you. Thanks.”

“I love you, too. Come here, beautiful.” Tara opened her arms, and Willow grinned, sliding closer to her girlfriend. She pressed her cheek just about her left breast, listening to her heart.

Just in case. Maybe Buffy was right and her claim that vampires were real and were going to take over the world was true.

Or maybe she was just paranoid.

The steady beat of Tara’s heart, the tempo slightly increased by Willow’s closeness, and the soft, warm arms around her waist reassured her. She smiled, and closed her eyes.

Yup. Just paranoid.

Why do I get the distinct feeling her nightmare was more likely a prophetic dream? :paranoid It was nice of Tara to check on Faith to make sure she was ok, tho I'm surprised she left Willow so soon. Can't wait for more.

That was so sweet.

I loved Faith too:

Normally, not so much of a Faith fan, but I like her here.

Hope this dream wasn't some sort of foreshadowing. Willow'll keep Tara safe though. :pray

Eagerly awaiting more.

I've missed several updates. Where the heck does the time go?

It's nice to see Willow and Tara grow closer with each update. It's taken a lot for Tara to open up and it's great that she's finally found someone she can trust.

Thank goodness for the Faith/Tara heart to heart, because I love Faith, but she was seriously on her way to a smackdown. Jealousy has a way of making us react in unpleasant ways. Hopefully realizing that she wants a real relationship of her own will help take the edge off her personality. Maybe she'll even start treating Willow with a little respect.

Looking forward to what happens next.

PART 20
--------------------------------

“Willow? Willow-oh.”

Tara paused in the doorway to Willow’s room, and smiled softly. She had bounded up the stairs to share some exciting news with her girlfriend, only to find Willow fast asleep, head resting on her keyboard, the machine blaring its protest as Willow’s head squished the spacebar, the headphones jammed in her ears blocking out the noise for her. She chuckled, and shook her head, moving across the room to reach her.

It had been eight months since they had first made love, and Tara felt a little guilty as she lightly touched her girlfriend’s shoulder. The two had become increasingly frequent in their physical affection-so frequent earplugs had become a necessity for Riley and Faith had started going to bed with heavy metal wailing in her room- and with the increase in Willow’s writing, Tara was afraid she was tiring out her girlfriend.

With another smile, Tara removed the headphones Willow was wearing. “Willow, honey? Wake up.”

Willow didn’t stir. Tara frowned, and leaned forward, putting her hand back on Willow’s shoulder. “Wil?”

“Don’t warn the tadpoles!” Wilow started awake, and Tara jumped away automatically, stifling a scream with her hand. As soon as she had stopped moving, and realized what had happened, she started laughing.

“Sorry, Wil. Did I scare you?”

“No.” Willow pouted once she had calmed her racing heart. “The frogs did.”

Tara laughed again. “Well, forget those scary frogs, and come downstairs. Your interview’s on.”

“It is?” Willow bounced up in her seat, and beamed. “Really? Then why are we sitting up here! Come on!” She jumped up, and, grabbing Tara’s hand, ran for the door. Tara had no choice but to follow behind, laughing.

They ran down the stairs hand-in-hand, through the kitchen, and into the living room, where Faith and Riley were sitting on the couch, watching the TV. Toby was sprawled across Faith’s lap, fast asleep, and Miss Kitty was perched on the counter, tail twitching, eyes alert. Faith turned her head, and smirked when she saw them.

“Have a nice nap, Wil?”

Willow smiled. “I did, actually.” Even though they weren’t always on the best of terms, Willow and Faith had come to a long-term truce, and the brunette had begun treating Willow with a lot of respect. The teasing had not relented, but it was more playful than it was jealous now.

Faith smirked again, and punched Willow’s arm playfully when she sat down on the sofa beside her. Tara went back to chopping broccoli and cauliflower, but glanced up often to watch the interview Willow had done in honour of the soon-to-be released first chapter of the Saving Grace films.

“Look, there’s Tara!” Willow crowed, pointing excitedly when, after Willow had been asked where her inspiration for the series had come from and had calmly pointed over to Tara, the camera zoomed in on her girlfriend as she blushed, smiling crookedly, and waved.

Faith laughed as Tara blushed. “Lookin’ good, T.”

“No wonder so many girls are always after you,” Riley commented with a grin.

“Hey!” Willow protested, glaring at them both, “She’s my girlfriend.”

All of them laughed while Willow scowled, and Tara put the knife down so she could lean across the counter, and run a hand through her girlfriend’s hair, which had been growing longer as the time went by. “No worries, Willow. It’s just you and me. Forever.”

“Gag.” Faith turned her attention back to the television, and mimed a gagging action.

Tara arched an eyebrow. “That’s a little hypocritical, Faith. What about Melanie?”

The person in question entered the room just as Tara finished her question, drying her hands on her jeans. “What about me?”

Faith grinned like an idiot at the appearance of her girlfriend. “Nothin’, baby. Tara’s just making fun of me.”

“With good reason. You do it enough to her and Willow.” Melanie approached the couch, and, finding her earlier spot stolen by Willow, grinned. “Speaking of. Finally decided to join us?”

“Hey, I wasn’t asleep that long!” Willow objected. She slid over, and so did Faith- Riley was unceremoniously shoved off the couch by the latter- so there was enough from for Melanie to slip between them. Faith put an arm around Melanie’s waist, and Melanie leaned into her, resting her cheek on Faith’s shoulder while Faith rested her’s on her girlfriend’s midnight-dark hair. Riley gave all three of them a dirty look and retreated to one of the chairs.

Tara laughed as she set aside the vegetables, and leaned forward on the counter, resting on her elbows-careful to avoid the knife-to watch the rest of the interview. “How much writing did you actually get done, Wil?”

“...I don’t know. A lot. I was only asleep a few minutes.” Willow’s tone turned evasive; Tara grinned.

“Maybe you shouldn’t have such an active sex life and such a big writing career,” Faith suggested cheekily, making Melanie chuckle.

“You’re one to talk, baby.”

Faith blushed. “It’s not my fault you’re so damned irresistible.”

Tara watched the two banter with a gentle smile on her face, not missing the look on Melanie’s face as she looked up at the taller girl beside her- the look Willow often gave her. Faith had slipped into a sort of depression after her realization that she really did need someone, worrying Tara, Willow, and Riley. After her share of the work in the stables were done, she spent most of her day holed up in her room with only a case of beer and a pack of cigarettes to keep her company. The added worry took its toll on Tara, and in turn Willow, who often lay awake with Tara-even though Tara thought she was asleep- listening to Tara’s quiet tears as the haunting dark music Faith had become addicted to shook the house. But then, after about a month of Faith’s depression, Willow had taken charge and ordered that everyone take the night off and go out for a nice of dancing and fun, and Faith had headed straight to the bar, only to lock eyes with Melanie, who had been working the counter. There had been an instant connection, and Tara and Willow had watched on as they had danced and drank, and finally kissed. Tara had worried that it would only last the night, but then, lo and behold, when she went downstairs the next morning to start the ritual Sunday funny-shaped pancakes, Melanie and Faith was sitting on the couch, flipping through a horse magazine together while Faith patiently taught Melanie different horse breeds, the parts of a saddle, the different gaits. The shock of it had almost made Tara pass out right there. But they had been together ever since, and Faith had almost completely transformed into a different person because of the relationship.

“Oooh, the trailer!” Willow squealed, startling Tara out of her daydream, “The trailer’s my favourite part!”

Tara raised one eyebrow at her.

Willow backpedalled immediately. “I-I mean, next to when it shows you! I love you?” She added hopefully at the end, peeking up at her girlfriend.

Tara’s face softened, and she chuckled. Willow perked up, knowing she was forgiven, and hopped up from the couch to steal a good-morning kiss, only to glance at the clock and see it was half past one in the afternoon.

“Oh. Maybe I slept longer than I thought.” Her brow furrowed.

Tara laughed, and reeled her in for a kiss. “I knew you needed your sleep. But if it’s any consolation, I made you coffee.”

Willow gave her a quick hug. “Thank God for girlfriends.”

“I hear ya, Red.” Faith looked over her shoulder to grin at her.

Tara and Melanie shared a look, and then laughed.

The interview finally ended the trailer, and the sound of people cheering. Faith stretched, and looked over at Melanie. “You wanna go for a ride?”

Melanie quirked an eyebrow. “What kind of ride are we talking about here?”

Faith laughed. “Feisty. But I’m referring to the horse-involved ride here.”

“I can never be sure with you.” But Melanie nodded, and smiled. “Sure.”

Tara watched the two of them walk- no, walk wasn’t the right word; there was too much of a spring in their step- out of the room hand-in-hand, and then, resting her chin in her hands, sighed contentedly.

“Job well done, baby.” Willow put an arm around her waist, and kissed her cheek.

Tara smirked. “Do I get a gold star?”

“You have been hanging out with Faith way too much. But definitely. She’s happy. And Mel’s great.”

“Mmm. I couldn’t have done it without you.” Tara smiled at her. “Speaking of happy, Buffy called while you were...occupied. Said they’d be glad to come out for Christmas again, and Dawnie can’t wait to meet Mel. Also, there’s some news from Anya and Xander.”

“And what’s that?” Willow scanned the front page of the newspaper someone- most likely Faith- had left out on the counter, looking for something interesting to read as she took a sip of her coffee.

“Anya’s pregnant. They’re getting married.”

Willow slammed the coffee mug down, and clapped a hand over her mouth to keep herself from spitting hot coffee everywhere. She gulped down the scalding liquid in her mouth, and then turned to look at Tara, not sure she’d heard right. “What?!”

“Yeah.” Tara smiled. “Anya’s exact words were: ‘Xander knocked me up so we’re getting married. Willow get’s to be best man since Xander doesn’t know any guys, and you, Faith, and Faith’s new girlfriend get to be bridesmaids’.”

Willow closed her eyes, still trying to comprehend the amazing news. “What about Riley?”

Tara laughed. “Riley refused to do anything, so he’s staying behind to watch the horses.”

“Ahem. I didn’t refuse; I could have come and violated the lovely first-born Summers. But I graciously decided to stay here instead.” Riley didn’t look up from the TV, but raised one hand in half-hearted protest.

“Wow...Xander married...that’s amazing!” Willow clapped her hands together, and giggled like a little girl in excitement. “I have to go call him!”

“I figured as much on that.” Tara smiled, and handed over the phone.

“Thanks, baby!” Willow gave Tara a quick peck on the cheek, and then hurried upstairs, leaving Tara with Riley.

Riley sighed, and sank lower into his chair. “Man, I’ve got to get myself a girlfriend.”

Tara only gave him an amused glance before she went on to chopping up some carrots.

***

Upstairs in her room, safely hidden behind her closed door, Willow punched in Xander’s number as she flopped down in her bed- the bed she hadn’t used for quite some time because every time she tried to sleep, she ended up having to go slip in with Tara. She listened as it dialled, and then began to ring.

“Hey, it’s the Willster.” Xander’s cheerful voice greeted her, and Willow grinned, and rolled on to her back.

“Hey, Xand. Congrats on your baby and your wedding.”

“Thanks. How’s life up there?”

“Great. You see the interview today?”

“That I did. I see Tara’s treating you well?”

Very well.” Willow smiled, and blushed at the memory of the night before.

“Good to hear. How’re the others? Faith okay?”

Willow smirked. “If you’re trying to dig up dirt on her new girlfriend, I am not the one to be asking.”

“That’s depressing.” Willow could hear the pout in his voice; she smiled. “...You know...”

“No, Xander, I am not revealing the dirty details of my love life, whether it be just kisses or gay love.”

“You really are a tease.”

“Tara tells me that every day. Speaking of, she tells me you’re coming up for Christmas again.”

“Yup. Two days before; extending our time.”

“Great to hear.” Willow took a deep breath that shook a little. “Listen, Xander, can you do me a favour?”

“Anything for my favourite gay woman.”

“And don’t you forget that. Anyways, we don’t have a good jeweller in town, and I really need one. So could you maybe pick something up for me?”

“Sure?” Willow could tell he was curious. “Whaddaya need?”

Willow inhaled deeply again. “Well,” She began, and she quickly outlined what she had in mind for him, describing it in detail.

Xander was quiet for a moment. “Wow, Wil. That’s huge.”

“Yeah, I know.” Willow fiddled nervously with a lock of her hair. “Can you do it?”

“Sure thing. I know it means a lot to you. How ‘bout I...”

And that was it. A plan was born.

@Zampsa1975- Shhh! You'll ruin the surprise! ^.^
**************************************
TITLE: Saving Grace

AUTHOR: lilcheesenip

RATING: PG-13, mostly for occasional naughty language ^.^

DISCLAIMER: Sadly, I don't own any of the characters. Wish I did, but Joss Whedon does. >.>

SUMMARY: Writing was the one thing that was ever important to best-selling author Willow Rosenberg. But when she moves to her deceased uncle's horse ranch, she finds herself at the mercy of the horses, Riley, Faith, and a gentle, blue-eyed blonde who Willow can't help but fall in love with.

SPOILERS: None that I can think of. It's all AU, so no monsters, or anything. ^.^

FEEDBACK: Absolutely! I live for it. ^.^

Author's Note: *IMPORTANT* AT THE BOTTOM OF THE UPDATE

Author's Note 2: Last update :sob This one's shorter than the others~

EPILOGUE
----------------------------

Her eyes were dark as she stared at my picture of Grace, the very last one I had. I saw the intent in her eyes, and snatched it away before she could crush it, stowing it safely in my pocket.

“What’s your problem?”

She glared up at me. “
Her. You won’t let her go. You even said her name when you were in bed with me.”

Before I knew it, I was pleading. “C’mon, Raine, don’t be that way. Grace...she was really special to me.”

“But she’s
dead.

I flinched away from the venom in her voice. “That’s not fair.”

“Is it?” Her eyes challenged me.

Something inside me snapped. I stood up, my back ridged. “Do you feel threatened by her? Well, you should. Grace was the sweetest person I ever knew; she had the kindest soul I ever will know. But you...you’re just pathetic.”

Her jaw dropped. I didn’t even spare her a final glance as I walked away from her, Grace’s picture still tucked carefully into my hip pocket.

“Hey.”

Willow looked up from her keyboard as a thumb caressed her check gently, then made its way down until it was resting comfortably on the side of her neck. “Hey yourself. What’s up?”

“Nothing. Just came to see how your writing time was going. The others are asleep.”

Willow closed her eyes, and leaned back into her chair, into Tara’s hand, which cupped the side of her neck. “Please tell me Faith and Melanie were good.”

“Dawn’s innocence has been preserved another day.” Tara smirked, and then moved her arm so it was hanging over Willow’s shoulder, placing her chin where her fingers had been moments ago, and smiled. Melanie had been just as nervous as she had been when first meeting the group, but she had been accepted as readily as Tara, minus the embarrassing and life-threatening mishaps. She fit easily into the group, and soon it was as if she had always been there. Dawn had taken a special liking to her, and had spent most of the evening talking with her and Faith, listening to Melanie describe the fashion industry that she worked at while Xander, Anya, Willow, and Tara conversed about the upcoming wedding, and Riley and Buffy kissed in the kitchen. (They vehemently objected that they had, but the others knew better.) Even Miss Kitty and Toby had gotten along for once, Toby laying happily next to Miss Kitty on the floor, while Miss Kitty grudgingly allowed him to remain there.

Tara scanned the few lines Willow had written, and her forehead furrowed in confusion. “I thought you wanted Raine and Anna to be together.”

“Originally, yes.” Willow frowned at the computer thoughtfully. “But now I’ve realized they really don’t belong together. Anna will always belong to Grace. So I think I might bring her back.”

“That’s good to hear.” Tara smiled. “Because, to put it bluntly, honey, Raine was a bit of a bitch.”

Willow laughed. “As I’m starting to discover. Besides, Anna’s craving a bit of lovin’ from Grace.” She raised both eyebrows at Tara.

Tara got the double-meaning of the words just fine, and tilted her head back.“Oh really?”

“Yes really.” Willow grinned as she turned back to the computer screen without commenting further. “So, is there anything I can do to help for tonight?”

“Tease.” Tara smirked again. “Presents are officially wrapped and ready to roll.” Despite her girlfriend’s offer to help, Tara knew how hopeless she was with wrapping, and had wrapped all but Willow’s present to her, which still remained a mystery to the blonde.

Willow giggled. “You goof.” She shut the lap top, and turned to face Tara, taking her hands. “Speaking of, since it’s Christmas Eve and all, plus another special day, I have a present for you.”

“Oh? And what other special day is it?” Tara’s eyes sparkled with good humour.

Willow rolled her eyes, and stood up, leading Tara over to the bed, and gesturing that she sit down. “Like you would forget.”

“Say I’m a little slow today.” Tara did as her girlfriend silently asked, and seated herself on the end of Willow’s bed, waiting with a smirk.

“Fine.” Willow rolled her eyes again, and played along as she went over to the closet. “It’s our anniversary today. Remember? It was today, exactly a year ago, that I told you I loved you.”

“That rings a bell.”

“Ha ha.” Willow turned, cradling the small box carefully in her hands. “I had Xander pick something up for me, as a gift for you.”

“And what might that be?” Tara’s heart quickened at the sight of the box, and it was a struggle to keep her voice calm and playful.

Willow walked over to her, and, as Tara hardly breathed, knelt down in front of her, and looked up with a gentle smile. “Alright. I may not do this right, so bear with me.”

Tara didn’t have any breath left to speak; she just nodded dumbly, trying to calm her heart.

Willow took a moment to prepare herself, and then inhaled deeply. “I love you, Tara. I mean, everything about you. Your eyes, your smile, your voice...how you love me.” Willow stole a sly glance up at Tara to see tears in her eyes. “I want to spend the rest of my life with you, Tara Maclay, and, if you want to, I want to spend it with you as my wife.”

There was a long silence. Tara couldn’t speak; tears streamed down her cheeks as she stared at her girlfriend.

Willow didn’t worry when she saw the tears; she knew they were the same kind of tears she was crying. So she just grinned impishly at her girlfriend. “So how was that?”

Finally, Tara found the word she was looking for. “B-beautiful,” She choked out past her tears.

Willow opened the box, and pulled out the two rings, holding them up carefully in her palm for Tara’s inspection. They weren’t anything fancy; just two golden bands. But both of them had ‘Forever’ written along the side.

Tara choked up again.

Willow took Tara’s hand with the one that wasn’t hold the rings, and smiled up at her. “I wanna marry you, Tara. Do you wanna marry me?”

Tara couldn’t speak. So she let her actions speak for her, and threw her arms around Willow’s neck as she kissed her. Willow leaned forward, wrapped both arms around Tara’s waist- carefully to keep her fingers curled tightly around the rings- and kissed her right back.

After a few minutes of passionate kissing, the two girls broke apart. Both of them were still crying. Not needing more of an answer than that, Willow took Tara’s hand, and carefully slid the ring on. Tara did the same for her, and then sat back, staring the band on her finger in amazement as the tears coursed down her cheeks.

Willow smiled at her. “Merry Christmas.”

Tara leaned forward to kiss her again. “Happy anniversary.”
