Feedback:

BuffyFan4ever - Thanks for reading. I had to read your babble-fest a few times before I finally got it. Lol. It has to be good though right? I mean it's Willow and Tara. How can that be bad?

Ariel - I thought Bunny the Vampire Slayer was worth a chuckle.

SMGOVAN - The teasing soon ends... I think... Maybe...

Finey_McFine - It's Buffy so really it could take years for them all to realize they're connected. Luckily I'm in charge and I won't make the wait that long. And triple love of AU fics? I think you're onto something there because AU is really the best.

LonelyTara - I'm sorry I didn't give you a Christmas miracle. But I promise 2011 fun. Hopefully that will be ok.

zampsa19752001 - You may just get your wish.

arsyadriani - Sorry for the tease. Good things come to those who wait. I think that's the saying. Whatever. Either way I promise the wait is almost up.

Promthea128 - So close, I know. But I kind of like the build up. Anticipation is good. I always liked it in other fics so I was trying to do a good job of building it up here.

And now...

Summary- Totally AU - Tara meets Willow - the happy bumblings of falling in love - I'm not too good at this summary thing.
Notes: Sorry it took so long for an update. I tried to get one up before the new year and my vacation started but my dog jumped on my computer and erased everything. I couldn't stay mad at him long though because he's just too damn cute. So finally, here's an update.

Chapter Five

‘0’s and 1’s… 1’s and 0’s.’ Willow stared at the screen in front of her, her eyes losing focus as she clicked from one screen to the next. It was a typical Monday morning and she knew she had a lot of work to catch up on. Unfortunately she couldn’t focus on anything other than thoughts of the beautiful blonde running through her head constantly since she’d first laid eyes on her at the café on Saturday. She’d even returned on Sunday in hopes of catching another glimpse of the girl and possibly taking Dawn’s advice to talk to her but had no such luck.

‘And what would you have talked to her about? Even if you could think of something do you honestly think you’d be able to form words around her? She gorgeous and you're... a spaz.’ Her self-deprecating thoughts helped a little to snap her thoughts back to reality but it only took a few moments before the blonde was back running through her head. ‘Well, mostly running,’ Willow admitted with a little smile, thinking of the times her thoughts had the blonde on her back. Shaking her head free of that thought she stood up, knowing she needed to take a break before she drove herself crazy and left her office, heading to the break room for her third cup of coffee that morning.

‘One cup of Joe and then back to work!’ she scolded herself with a firm nod.

She stepped into the break room, thankful to find it empty and stared out the window to the street below her as her coffee brewed. The sun shining through the windows warmed her and she smiled at the feeling, wishing she could have just one more day off. Her weekend had been a bust, helping Dawn on Saturday and spending all of Sunday, except for the half hour that she’d been at the coffee shop, cooped up inside from an unexpected rain storm. A sunny day outside, reading and dozing was just what she needed to recoup and get back on track with all her work. Unfortunately, that wasn’t going happen today and she turned from the window to grab her now full mug of hot liquid and make her way back to her office. She was rounding one of the corners when a commotion up ahead in the corner of the floor caught her eye. It looked like a train wreck of papers and several of her co-workers working furiously to organize the mess. Honestly though, that wasn’t what caught her attention. What she was really looking at was a gorgeous pair of legs that belonged to a woman who was kneeling with her back to the redhead. Willow had no idea who the woman was but as she continued to stare, the woman turned towards her and Willow’s eyes went wide. She ducked back around the corner she’d just rounded and collected herself as she leaned against the wall. ‘The blonde from the café!’ It was almost too good to be true. Of course in the one moment that she’d stopped thinking about her, she appeared.

Willow turned and peeked her eyes around the corner, watching as the blonde smiled and seemed to apologize. ‘She must have been the cause of the mess.’ Willow watched her other co-workers, all males, smile back and motion that it was no problem. Willow glared at them as she watched some of their stares linger a little longer than necessary on the object of her affection. What was the blonde doing there? Willow knew that she would’ve noticed the girl before if she worked in the office.
She watched a moment longer as the rest of the papers were gathered and the girl made her way to the elevator after one final thank you. She stood there for a moment as she waited for the elevator doors to open, fiddling with her hair and the mounds of papers in her arms. When the elevator finally arrived Willow watched as the girl stepped in and saw the down arrow light up. She had a sudden urge to run to doors and hurl herself inside with the other woman just to have ten more seconds but just as she was getting ready to bolt, a hand on her shoulder brought her back to her surroundings with a start.

“Willow? What are you doing, sleuthing around the office here?”

“Mr. Sanders, hi,” the redhead turned to her boss, embarrassment written all over her face and coffee spilled over her hand. “I wasn’t sleuthing. Just observing. You know, I’m observant and I was just checking out the office. Not that it needs checked out. Or that even if it did, that it’s my job to be the one checking. No, not me. I’m totally computer girl and you know it. That’s why you hired me. I mean for computers and not stalking the rest of your employees. I mean not stalking. I would never stalk. I just-”

“Willow,” Mr. Sanders smiled tenderly down at his favorite employee and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. “Calm down.”

“Right. Sorry. I… babble. You know that,” Willow answered with a smile.

“I do,” he said with a chuckle as he handed her his handkerchief to wipe the coffee from her hand. “Anyway, I just stopped by your office looking for you. Do you think I could possibly steal you for lunch? I have some things I need to run by you.”

“Absolutely. What time?”

“How about one? I’m in meetings until then. I’ll swing by your office to pick you up and we’ll go downtown to talk about it.”

“See you then,” she said as she handed back the handkerchief with a smile.

*************************************************************************************

‘Way to go Tara. Way to make a great impression,’ Tara thought as she kneeled amidst that scattered papers and plans she’d taken great pains to organize for her client. She began to collect the different documents when a few gentlemen seated nearby came to assist. She’s smiled a tried to be grateful but had honestly wished they’d let her pick up everything herself so she could’ve given the documents some sort of proper order. Once the last roll of plans was picked up she thanked them again and made her way to the elevator, hoping she’d have a few minutes alone in the conference room she was on her way to before the client arrived.

So far it had been an awful start to her work week. She’d woken up late, gotten caught in traffic, lost half of her plans for a good hour before finding them on her desk where she'd left them so she wouldn't lose them, and had been running around this building for the last twenty minutes trying to find the correct conference room. After two misdirections, she was hoping the kind secretary she’d ran into on this floor knew her ass from her elbow and had sent Tara to the right place.

The elevator stopped on her floor and she quickly made her way in the direction the woman had given her, finding the room she was looking for only a moment later. She was pleased to find in empty and quickly went about trying to reorganize everything she had to make the neatest presentation possible to the client with M&R, Inc. They were a new client to her firm and she was hoping to impress them with the hard work she’d put into the design for their new office. The door opening behind her stopped her frantic sorting and she smiled at the two men who entered the office.

“Ms. Maclay?” the younger of the two asked.

“Tara,” she said with a smile as she stepped forward to shake his hand.

“Nice to meet you. I’m Ben Roman and this is Mr. Sanders. We’re with M&R.”

“Pleased to meet you both,” Tara said as she shook Mr. Sanders hand and he smiled at her.

“The pleasure is ours Ms. Maclay,” he said as he pulled out two chairs, one for her and one for himself. “So, please show us what you’ve come up with for our new office.”

*************************************************************************************

Willow had kept an eye out for the mysterious blonde for the rest of the day but had no luck in spotting her again. She’d attended her meeting with Mr. Sanders over lunch and had spent the majority of her afternoon working with her team on their newest program but hadn’t really tackled much of her own work and knew it was going to be a long night. She packed up her laptop and locked up her office around six, ready to grab her umpteenth cup of sugar infused caffeine before heading home for an evening of hardcore programming.

Hearing on the radio that traffic was a mess, she took that back way and stopped off to grab a double mocha cappuccino a few blocks from the house she shared with Buffy and part-time with Dawn. She had placed her order and was standing at the counter, waiting for her beverage when she felt a slight tap on her shoulder. Turning around her eyes widened in surprise as she took in the figure that stood before her.

“Excuse me. But I th-think you dropped this.”

*************************************************************************************

Still kind of a teaser, I know. Sorry. Kind of. But the next update is already half done and I promise it won't be a long wait for Willow's reaction. Thanks for hanging in there.

Aaaaahhhhhhh!!!! That is SO unfair!!! You are a terrible, terrible tease and I bet you have a little smirk on your face as you read this! Humph! :smash :shy

Anyway, now that I've gotten better control of myself...I'm very happy to see this story updated! I really do like the way you are setting things up. I can't wait to see if Willow spazzes out when she realizes that her blonde mystery woman is standing right behind her. Spilled coffee, endless babble, etc. Lot's of fun! Let's hope she gets the courage to actually have a conversation or ask her out. Oooh! Maybe Tara will take the reins and ask Willow to join her for coffee or maybe to dinner?????????

Big yay for a speedy update! :pray :pray :pray :pray

Chapter 6

Tara stood there for a moment, holding the five dollar bill in her hand towards the startled redhead in front of her. Time seemed to expand as the two girls stood there longer and longer, neither one of them moving. This was the third time Tara had seen the beautiful redhead and was rapidly trying to come up with a reason to approach her when the petite woman dropped the five dollar bill and walked away without noticing. Tara gathered up all her courage and made her way to the counter to retrieve the bill, thinking that someone was finally smiling down on her. Now though, she wasn't so sure. She'd obviously surprised the woman, though she couldn't figure out why, but they'd been standing there for almost a full minute now, Tara's hand still outstretched with the money and the redhead backed against the counter, eyes wide.

"Are you ok?" Tara finally asked, unable to take it any longer.

"Yeah, sorry. Yes, thank you,” the redhead said, finally reaching for the money. Tara felt her stomach flip as their fingers gently brushed and struggled to keep her feet beneath her.

“Sure, no p-problem,” she answered, letting her hair curtain her face, cursing her stutter that reappeared at that moment.

“No really,” she heard the redhead say. “I mean, most people would just have picked it up for themselves instead of returning it. Five bucks won’t buy much but it’s something and not a lot of people are honest enough to return anything these days. I once saw this little old lady drop handful of change and before she could turn around to collect it all this teenager swooped in and stole it all. I was like, really? You’re stealing from an eighty four year old grandma with a walker? What’s wrong with you? I felt awful for her. So I walked over to her because I had a pocketful of change and pretended the coins had all rolled further away than she thought and handed them to her. She was so grateful and I didn’t mind doing it. I just couldn’t believe that kid. Like do you really have to steal $1.17 from a sweet little old lady? Who is that hard up for cash?”

“Yeah,” Tara said after a moment, surprised at how the redhead could talk so quickly and lengthy without taking a single breath.

“Sorry,” the redhead said, a blush coming over her face. “I tend to babble.”

“Oh, no it’s fine.” Tara smiled at the girl, trying to reassure her. She couldn’t get over how beautiful the redhead was. She’d thought so the first time she’d laid eyes on her few days earlier after coffee and had been struck by her beauty a second time earlier that day when she saw her after her meeting with Mr. Sanders. The redhead had been walking out the door with her new client as she had been packing up her car to head back to her own office for the day. This time she'd decided to take a chance and hoped it would work in her favor. “I’m Tara.”

“Willow. It’s nice to meet you,” she said, extending her hand. Tara took it and again felt her stomach flip. “Could I buy you a cup of coffee? You know, to say thank you.”

“That’s not necessary. I have a full cup at my table,” Tara said, feeling a blush rise on her cheeks. “But m-maybe, if y-you’d like, you c-could join me?”

Willow stared at the girl for a moment, in awe that she was actually talking to the beautiful blonde and wanting nothing more than to sit down and enjoy her company when she remembered the pile of work waiting for her in her car. Tara saw the unease in the redhead and immediately cursed herself for being so forward. She dropped her head, allowing her hair to curtain her increasingly red face and stepped back. Willow saw this and immediately wanted to comfort her. She opened her mouth to do so when the barista behind the counter interrupted her.

“Here’s your drink,” said as she pushed the cup towards Willow. Willow smiled quickly before turning back to Tara.

“S-Sorry. That w-was w-way too forward of m-me,” Tara said, cursing her stutter again. She hadn't stuttered this bad in years.

“No. No it wasn’t,” Willow said, taking another step towards Tara. “I just was thinking of all the work I have waiting for me. But that can wait. I’d love to have coffee with you.” Tara looked up, surprised by the eagerness in Willow’s voice to find the redhead looking at her, her face full of hope.

“O-Ok. I’m right over h-here,” Tara said, pointing to the table where she’d left her cup of steaming coffee and a notepad full of ideas for other projects she was working on. Willow smiled and followed her to the table, still a little in disbelief that she was sitting down across from the beautiful blonde she’d been thinking about for the last few days. Tara dipped her head again as Willow smiled at her, a small grin playing across her own lips.

“So, Tara… tell me about yourself.”

*************************************************************************************

“I can’t tomorrow. I promised my friend Anya I’d have dinner with her before she leaves on her trip. Tara and I are meeting her downtown after work,” Faith said as she and Buffy crossed the street, hand in hand, towards the coffee shop.

“Ok, well that’s fine. Another night this week then,” Buffy said as she gave Faith’s hand a brief squeeze. Faith just smiled and opened the door to the coffee shop, allowing the blonde to enter first. They both stopped at the counter, Faith waiting patiently for Buffy to decide what she wanted, knowing it would be a few minutes. She smiled at the concentration on the blonde’s face and then turned to check out the rest of the shop. She’d never been a big coffee drinker but Buffy dragged her from shop to shop everyday they spent together so she was learning to get used to it.

The shop was fairly busy and most of the tables were full. Thankfully Buffy just wanted to make a quick stop on their way to a movie so they wouldn’t have to stay. She was turning back to her date when she heard the distinct sound of a familiar laugh above the other patrons. She turned back towards the sound and spotted Tara, sitting with another woman, obviously enjoying her company. Faith watched for a moment and saw all the usual signs. Coy smiles, extended eye contact, nervous hand wringing.

‘She’s totally flirting with her. Who is that redhead?’ Faith thought, a smile crossing her face as Tara laughed again at something the other woman said.

“Faith!” She was snapped back to reality and turned to see both Buffy and the barista behind the counter staring at her.

“Oh, sorry. Just a bottled water please,” she said, smiling at the cashier.

“What’s up?” Buffy asked as she handed the girl a twenty and waited for her change.

“Nothing. I just was looking around,” Faith answered, looking back at Tara again, seeing her legendary half smile gracing the blonde’s lips. “Tara’s here.”

“Oh?” Buffy said with a smile as she tucked her change in her purse. “We should go say hi.”

“I don’t think so. She’s with someone.” Buffy looked up at the brunette, the question evident in her eyes.

“I thought she was single.”

“She is. At least I thought she was. She hasn’t said anything about seeing anyone,” Faith said, trying to recall if Tara had dropped any hints about a new lady in her life.

“Maybe it’s a first date. Where is she?” Buffy asked as she turned to look in the direction Faith was staring in. It didn’t take long for her to find Tara but it wasn’t actually Tara that she noticed first. It was the red hair of her best friend who was seated across from Tara, frantically talking with her hands in huge, wide sweeping gestures. “Oh my God!”

“What? What’s wrong?” Faith asked as Buffy pulled her further down the counter and out of site of their roommates.

“How does she know Willow?” Buffy hissed as she peeked around a large planted palm, watching as Tara nodded enthusiastically and wrote something down on a sheet of notebook paper in front of her.

“Willow? Wait, you’re Willow?” Faith moved to Buffy’s side and peeked around the same plant, watching as Tara handed Willow a folded up piece of paper with a shy smile and nodded. “That’s her?” Faith whispered. Buffy only nodded. “What’s she doing with Tara?”

“I don’t know. I’m as surprised as you are.” Buffy leaned closer, trying to hear what the two were saying, which caused Faith to laugh as they were about fifteen feet away from the table. Buffy just brushed her off and continued to concentrate on their obviously smitten friends. “Should we go over there?”

“No. Let them be. I don’t know how they met but it looks like they don’t want to be bothered by anyone else,” Faith said as she pulled Buffy back to the counter where their drinks had just been placed.

“Well maybe we could just hang out here for a bit,” Buffy suggested, meeting Faith’s gaze with a hopeful look as they reached the door to the shop.

“No. We’re going to the movies. We aren’t staying here to spy on them,” Faith said, pulling Buffy out the door.

“I didn’t say anything about spying,” Buffy protested. “I just… I enjoy the ambiance in here. I love it. We should stay.” She got out of Faith’s grasp for a moment and was almost back to the door before Faith got a hold of her upper arm again and pulled her away.

“Come on. We’ll catch the movie and then maybe, if you’re good, we can go back to my place for a bit.” Buffy immediately stopped resisting and fell into step beside the brunette.

“Really? Your place huh? Well come on. Let’s get this movie started.” She entwined her fingers with Faith’s and smiled as they made their way down the street.

*************************************************************************************

“So you’re going to be designing our new office? That’s cool. I’ve always thought architecture was interesting but I don’t really know too much about it,” Willow confided as she took her final sip from her cup. “Was that what you always wanted to do?”

“Well actually n-no. I mean I always l-liked drawing but I didn’t actually s-start liking the idea of d-designing buildings until I started college,” Tara answered. “I t-took a class to fill a c-credit and I ended up really liking it.”

“Well you certainly have my boss loving your ideas. I had a meeting with him today and he was raving about how great the new office is going to look and how functional it will be.”

“Have you always b-been into computers?” Tara asked, trying to dodge the compliment.

“Oh yeah. I’m a huge geek,” Willow joked and Tara couldn’t contain the smile that lit up her face. “I’ve been hacking away for as long as I can remember.”

“I’m n-not the best with computers,” Tara admitted.

“You don’t like them?”

“It’s not that. I j-just am not so good with the understanding of how to use them w-without making them crash.” Willow couldn’t contain the giggle that escaped from her and Tara only smiled harder at the adorable sound.

“Well if it makes you feel any better, I can’t draw. My stick figures are atrocious at best.” The two girls sat there for a moment then, letting a comfortable silence envelope them, each lost in their own thoughts of the other. Finally Willow noticed the clock on the far wall of the coffee house and signed in disappointment when she saw it was almost eight o’clock. “Wow, I didn’t know it was so late. I should get going. I have a ton of work to do and it’s not getting done sitting in my car,” Willow said, hating the fact that she couldn’t stay with Tara forever.

“I do too,” Tara said, staring down at her now empty cup. It had been empty for the last half hour but she’d been too busy enjoying Willow’s company to notice.

“But maybe we could do it again sometime,” the redhead said hopefully. “Like another coffee date or maybe a dinner date? I mean not that this was a date. I mean we just met you know. How presumptuous do I sound! I just meant maybe we could meet up again and hang out because I had a really nice time with you and it would be fun to do it again. But not like ‘hey let’s go on another date’ because this wasn’t a date. I mean it could be a date. Like we could go on a date but… well never mind because now I’m being way presumptuous. Like why would you even be interested in dating me? You probably already have someone or… oh God you probably aren’t even like, into girls and here I am all ‘let’s go on a date’ and… oh I’m so sorry. I just-”

“Willow, you’re doing it again,” Tara said with a smile.

“Sorry,” Willow said, taking in a much needed breath. “I told you. I babble.”

“It’s ok. I l-like it,” Tara said, feeling her cheeks grow warm at the admission. “And yes, I’d like t-to do this again. A-And th-there’s no one else. Just me.”

“Oh, ok. Well maybe I could call you sometime?” Willow asked.

“I’d like that,” Tara said as she wrote her number down on a clear sheet in her notebook, folded it, and passed it to the redhead.

“Great,” Willow said as she carefully placed the number in her pocket. “Well I really should be going.”

“Yeah, me too.”

“Can I walk you to your car?” Tara just nodded, letting her hair curtain her face to hide the smile she couldn’t contain as she packed up her things. The two walked out, side by side, neither one saying anything else. “This is me,” Tara said as they arrived to her car, literally ten feet away from the door of the coffee house.

“Wow, prime parking,” Willow joked. “Well I guess I’ll say good night then. Drive home safe, no speeding. And I’ll give you a call later this week. Maybe we could have dinner this weekend?”

“I’m f-free Saturday.”

“Great. Maybe we can go to that new Greek place that just opened up over on Bleeker Street,” Willow said as she rolled onto the balls of her feet, unable to contain her excitement. “I’ll call you about it this week.”

“Ok. It was n-nice meeting you Willow.”

“You too,” Willow said with a small waive as Tara climbed into her car. She watched as the blonde pulled away from the curb and drove off. But even after the car was out of site the butterflies in her stomach refused to settle.

dibs! GOD DAMNIT.

Ok, so obviously no dibs for Anna banana, but ah well. Totally cute non-date-dateness happening. I wonder how they'll find out they're the ones Buffy and Faith tried to set up? Spot-on Willowbabble. Are you a victim of it yourself?

hey great story...its starting out awesome. Buffy and Faith hiding behind plants was just an awesome idea..I can see them now. I like the AU fics that take the characters out of the normal. I think this challenges the writers and you are doing so well. Keep it up..cant wait till u update again

Yay for great update-y goodness... I really liked how Willow & Tara met without "help" from Faith & Buffy... I kinda hope that Tara figures out an effective "cure" for Willow-babble during their next date...

I like how the joke is on Buffy and Faith here, but I also like that they found out right away and you didn't make it a big high-comedy reveal to them.

I can't believe I missed this update yesterday!! :rage

I was thrilled to see that Tara had also noticed Willow. We'd only seen 'Tara stalking' form Willow's POV, so it was nice to see that Tara thoughts are right in line. ;-)

I really loved that they found each other without their friends setting them up. There's so much pressure on blind dates...this way was much nicer!

I'm glad that you are updating regularly, because I do love this story!!

Caught up on this story and I really like it. Willow's nervous babble around Tara is cute. Wondering what each of their reactions will be when they find out their friends (Buffy and Faith) were trying to set them up all along.

Feedback:

edob - Thanks for reading.

wolfsbane - It took me a while to get the Willow-babble written just but I'm glad it came out so well. Thank you. Definitely the opposite of babbler myself so it was a little difficult.

LonelyTara - Sorry this update took a bit longer. Been under the weather but they should be coming more frequently again.

SMGOVAN - Sorry to make you suffer for soooo looong. Lol.

bouncer73 - Thanks for the kind words. I have taken a few liberties with the characters but I did want to keep the main components of their personality in check. I like that about AU though. You can change them up a bit.

zampsa19752001 - Unfortunately no cure for Willow-babble in this update. I don't want to drag the story on forever but I do want to keep developing it because watching the two fall in love is just so... There are no words.

Promthea128 - Non-date/date cuteness. I like that. It really was.

DaddyCatALSO - I didn't want to make it a big high comedy reveal. Yes Buffy and Faith will eventually get the answers they seek but I don't think it has to be a big production.

Finey_McFine - I definitely wanted to show that the attraction was not just on Willow's side so I hope I did a good job with that. And you're right, blind dates suck! Now it's just a matter of getting them from point A to point B of adorable coupledom which, of course, is how it should be.

love_2003 - I'm glad you're enjoying the story. I'm really enjoying writing it. I haven't written the "what happens with Buffy and Faith find out" part yet but I'm defintely thinking about it.

Notes: Another apology for the long wait on the update. Of course after the holidays and my vacation I spent some time taking care of my ailing girlfriend only to have her illness transfer to me. Just starting to feel a little better so I'm getting this up now before you all lose interest. Enjoy and have a great rest of the weekend.

Chapter 7

Tara yawned once again, softly rubbing her eyes as she stared at the drawing in front of her for the new civic center for downtown Sunnydale. The project had her chomping at the bit when she’d initially been put in charge of the design team but she just couldn’t get it together today. Today she could barely keep her eyes open.

She’d tried to go to bed early the night before but had been rudely awoken around midnight by some mysterious moans and groans coming from down the hall. In her sleep induced haze she’d shuffled barefoot to her door and opened it, thinking that perhaps her roommate was ill. A few moments later, as she woke up more fully, she realized what she was listening to and quickly closed the door, slumping back into her bed a moment later, resigning herself to the fact that she probably wasn’t going to be getting much more sleep. She had lived with Faith all through college and knew those sounds well.

‘Buffy must’ve finally gotten her way,’ she thought with a laugh as she put her earbuds in and turned on her ipod, hoping to drown out the noise.

She’d gotten a total of about three hours of sleep on and off throughout the night and had bitterly left the apartment that morning, giving Faith’s closed bedroom door a hard glare and sticking her tongue out at it for good measure. Since then she’d been going through the motions in an almost zombie-like state.

“Knock knock, time for the meeting.” Tara looked up to her open door to see Julie, the only person she’d met since moving to Sunnydale that she considered a friend. Tara set the plans aside and got up from her desk.

“Is my presence really necessary for this?” she asked as she followed Julie down the hall.

“Of course. Who am I going to make faces at when I’m bored if you’re not there,” Julie said with an innocent smile. Tara just shook her head and followed her friend into the conference room, taking a seat at the large mahogany table there as the rest of her colleagues streamed in.

“So what did you do this weekend?” Julie asked from her seat next to Tara. Reflecting back on the previous evening Tara couldn’t contain the smile that lit up her face. “That good huh?” Julie teased. “Man, all I did was help my sister build baby furniture for my future nephew. Come on, spill. What happened?”

Tara hadn’t been able to get her encounter with Willow out of her mind. She was completely smitten with the adorable redhead. After she’d left the coffee house she’d driven home, a thousand watt smile plastered to her face, and found her apartment empty upon entering. Figuring Faith would be gone most of the night on her date with Buffy she slipped into some sweats and an old college t-shirt and plopped down on the living room couch, remote in hand, knowing that she’d never be able to concentrate on her work that evening. Flicking through the channels on the television she’d finally settled on an old black and white movie that she used to love as a child. But she really wasn’t watching the movie. She was lost in her thoughts of Willow. Her fiery red hair, piercing green eyes, her heart melting smile.

‘I’m in so much trouble,’ Tara had thought with a smile as she pulled her knees up on the couch and hugged them to her chest. It had been a long time since she’d felt the butterflies in her stomach stir over someone new.

“It was a good weekend,” she said, finally meeting Julie’s expectant gaze. “Just kind of hung out and relaxed.”

“You’re such a liar,” Julie replied with a smirk before their boss entered the room and closed the door behind him, effectively ending all side conversations for the next hour and a half.

*************************************************************************************

Willow smiled to herself as she typed in the final line of code for the program her boss was eagerly anticipating and saved the information before something happened to it.

‘Finally,’ she thought as she locked her computer and prepared to leave her office for lunch. A knock from her office door distracted her as she searched for her car keys and she sighed, thinking it was someone from the office, looking for her to review yet another malfunctioning program. Knowing she couldn’t pretend she wasn’t there she moved towards her door and opened it, the frown on her face clearly pronounced.

“Damn Will, don’t look so happy to see me.”

“Dawnie, hey! What are you doing here?” she asked, surprised but pleased with the brunette’s appearance.

“I was in the neighborhood. Just thought I’d stop by and see if I could nab you for lunch.”

“Definitely. I was just on my out. What did you have in mind?” Willow asked as she grabbed her bag and closed her office door behind her with a resounding click.

“Your choice. I owe you. I just took my biology mid-term and I think it went really well, thanks to your skillful tutoring,” Dawn said, clearly grateful for the help she’d received.

“That’s great!” Willow said as she punched the down button at the elevator banks. “How many more exams do you have this week?”

“Just one more on Thursday and I’ve got that one in the bag,” Dawn answered as the two women stepped into the elevator. “So I can basically take the rest of the week off.” The two rode down to the first floor in silence, picking up passengers from other floors as they went. “So where do you want to go?” Dawn asked as they stepped off behind the mob that had gathered on the ride down.

“Wherever,” Willow answered. “I’m not really in the mood for anything in particular.”

“Well there’s that new Greek restaurant. I think on Bleeker. I heard it’s delicious.”

“Well, um, maybe somewhere else. I already have plans to go there this weekend,” Willow said.

“Ok, sure. How about Italian?” Dawn suggested. Willow just nodded as she walked out the door to the building and felt the sun instantly warm her. “So you’re going there this weekend?” Again Willow just nodded. “With who?”

“No one you know,” Willow said, a small smile playing at her lips as thoughts of Tara danced through her head.

“You have a date!” Dawn shrieked, startling both Willow and half the people on the block.

“I never said it was a date,” Willow said as she continued to walk, hoping that Dawn would keep her voice at a normal level as she continued to bombard her with questions.

“But it so is a date,” Dawn said, only a little quieter. “So who is she? Is it another Buffy set up? Please tell me it’s not because those are disastrous.”

“It’s not a set up,” Willow answered as they continued down the block. “It’s someone I had coffee with yesterday. We just met and that’s all there is to the story.”

“Oh come on Will, I need more details than that. Is she cute?”

“Yes,” Willow answered simply, still smiling with the thought of Tara. Dawn saw this and couldn’t contain her own smile.

“Well good. I hope it works out,” she said, signaling to Willow that she was done pestering before changing the subject. “So Buffy never came home last night?”

“I didn’t hear her come in. And her car wasn’t in the driveway this morning when I left,” Willow said, concern for her best friend suddenly crossing her mind. “I hope she’s ok.”

“She is. I called her this morning to check on her and she answered, sounding absolutely exhausted,” Dawn said with a smirk.

“What? Was she working all night?”

“She was working something,” Dawn said with a giggle. Willow just looked at the younger woman, confused. “Faith.”

“Oh,” Willow said, realizing what the brunette meant. “Finally.”

“I know, right,” Dawn agreed as they reached the door to the restaurant.

*************************************************************************************

It was two hours later when a still full Willow sat at her desk, eyeing her cell phone that sat next to the sheet of paper that contained Tara’s number. She’d wanted to call the moment she woke up this morning. Actually if she were totally honest she wanted to call the moment they’d parted the night before but she’d restrained herself for a full eighteen hours. She wasn’t sure she could wait much longer to hear the blonde’s voice and her resolve was fading fast as her fingers inched towards the phone. Before she could lose her nerve she quickly dialed the number on the paper and waited.

One ring.

‘Crap what am I going to say?’

Two rings.

‘I mean she said she was free Saturday but maybe she was just being nice.’

Three rings.

‘What if she’s like screening her calls now and just trying to make sure I don’t get through.’

Four rings.

‘Maybe I should’ve waited to call. I should’ve at least waited until tomorrow.’

“Hey, this is Tara Maclay. I’m sorry I can’t answer your call now but if you just leave a message I’ll call you back as soon as I can. Have a nice day.” Willow’s internal babble immediately ceased at the sweet sound of Tara’s voicemail and she could feel her lips curve into a smile as she listened to the message. The abrupt beep following the message brought her back to reality though and she had to quickly gather her thoughts.

“Tara! Hi! This is Willow… from the coffee house last night… Um… I just was calling… like I said I would. Just wanted to see if you were still free Saturday night for dinner? Because I had such a nice time last night and I hope you did too. I just was looking forward to seeing you again. But not like in a stalker way or anything. I just enjoyed your company you know? And I know we just saw each other last night. You’re probably thinking it’s a little fast for me to call you but I just… well I guess I just was hoping to talk to you. I’m babbling again. Sorry. Nothing like listening to a five minute voicemail on your cell phone huh? I know when I get those I’m always like grr argh! Just get to the point already. But they just keep talking and talking… kind of like I’m doing now. Sorry. Again. Anyway um… just give me a call when you get this… if you want to. My number is 222-501-3400. So um, have a nice day. Bye.” She hung up with a giant sigh and immediately put her head down on her desk.

‘Way to go! Way to babble her ear off. God, she’s going to think you’re absolutely crazy!’ Her internal babble was interrupted by her cell phone vibrating across the desk. Cautiously she picked up it, wondering if she’d be lucky enough to see Tara’s number flash across the screen.

Buffy’s Cell

‘Damn it! No such luck.’

“Hello?”

“Will! My favorite best friend in the whole wide world!”

“Hi,” Willow said cautiously, thinking Buffy was either wanting something from her or drunk when she heard her friends enthusiastic greeting.

“What’s up?” Buffy asked.

“I’m at work. Why? What’s up with you?”

“Oh nothing. Just thought I’d check in with my best bud. See how things were going?”

“Fine,” Willow said, turning to her computer, still wary of Buffy’s eagerness. “You feeling ok Buf?”

“I’m fine. In fact I’m great! So tell me, what’s up? What’s going on? What’s new with you?”

“Did you have like six Red Bulls for lunch or something?”

“What? No! Can’t I just be excited to talk to you?”

“I guess.”

“So tell me what’s going on? What’s new?” Buffy prodded once again.

“Nothing really. I just finished up a project at work this morning and then I went and had lunch with Dawn.”

“Oh. That’s nice. What did you do last night?”

“Last night?” Willow stopped tapping on her keyboard and sat back in her chair.

“Yeah. I mean you weren’t home before I left so I just wondered what you were up to?”

‘What’s she getting at?’

“I worked a little later than usual. And then I went and grabbed a coffee and came home to finish up some work,” Willow answered, omitting the part about Tara. Not that she didn’t want to scream from the rafters that she’d finally, possibly met someone, but she didn’t want to jinx it by saying anything more after she’d gotten Dawn to agree not to say anything to anyone over lunch.

“Oh.” Willow could hear the disappointment in Buffy’s voice and wondered if Dawn had gone back on her pledge. “Ok, well I just wanted to check on you. You want to grab dinner tonight?”

“Sure,” Willow answered. “I should be done here around five or five thirty.”

“Ok. I’ll see you at home then.” Willow punched the end call button on her phone and continued to stare at it, wondering what kind of mood Buffy when be in later when she got home.

*************************************************************************************

“This is Faith Lehane.”

“She didn’t say anything! I called her and kept dropping little hints, like what did you do last night, what’s new? And nothing. She just said she was working late and grabbed a coffee and went home. No mention of flirtation with any cute blonde!”

“Buffy?” Faith was complete caught off guard by the bombardment on the other end of the line. “Wait a second.” Faith put her desk phone down and moved to close her office door. Returning back to her office chair, she sat down and picked the phone back up again. “What are you talking about?”

“Willow! I called her to probe her about her little rendezvous last night and she totally blew me off. Didn’t say a single thing about Tara! Did Tara say anything to you?”

“No, but then again I haven’t talked to her. The last time I saw her was Sunday night.”

“You haven’t talked to her?” Buffy practically screamed into the receiver and Faith had to quickly pull it away from her ear to avoid permanent brain damage.

“No. I was with you all last night and I’ve been here at work today.”

“But how could you not at least call her? Aren’t you the slightest bit curious at how she met Will?”

“I don’t know. I mean they met some way. If Tare wants to tell me about it she can,” Faith answered.

“Oh you are so going to have to learn to be nosier if you’re going to be my girlfriend,” Buffy said with a sigh.

“Your girlfriend huh?” Faith teased.

“Oh come on! We’ve gone on like a gazillion dates! We spend practically every night either out together or talking on the phone! I think I have every right to use that title,” Buffy cried. Faith just laughed.

“Ok, ok. Girlfriend it is.”

*************************************************************************************

Tara finally got back to her desk right before she was supposed to leave for the day. She’d been shuffled in and out of meetings all afternoon, not really paying attention to much of what was being said in any of them and was thankful that her day was almost over. She quickly gathered her things and locked up her desk before making a break for the stairwell to avoid any further discussion with her colleagues about this project or that one. She was due to meet Anya and Faith for dinner in less than half an hour and she knew she didn’t have time to dilly dally.

Grateful to have made it out of the building and to her car without being noticed she started the ignition and took a deep breath before putting the car in gear and leaving the parking garage. She rolled the window down and allowed the soft California breeze to blow through her hair as she drove along to the restaurant that Anya had picked for her bon voyage dinner. She arrived a few minutes early, parked the car, and reached for her cell phone to call Faith and make sure no plans had changed. She saw she had a voicemail and figured it was her roommate without bothering to check the number. She dialed in and listened for a moment before hearing the melodic sound of a nervous redhead start to babble.

‘Willow.’

A smile immediately lit up her face as she listened to the other girl leave the lengthiest message she’d ever received. Thoughts of the redhead had been creeping up in her mind all day but she thought it would be at least a few more days before she heard from her. Thankful that Willow hadn’t waited she grabbed a pen and paper and jotted down her number on the second playback.

Without even thinking about what she was going to say she started dialing the redhead’s number, anxious to hear the live version of her voice once again. She was two digits away when a knock on her windshield startled her from the task. Looking up she saw both Anya and Faith standing there, waiting patiently for her. Sighing, she put her phone in her purse and exited the car. The call would have to wait.

Yay for great update-y goodness... Damn Anya & Faith for preventing Tara hearing live-Willow voice... I hope Buffy soon learns that her nosiness is not always a good thing....

YAY an update!!! :pinky

I'm excited about their Saturday date! I was glad to see that Willow called Tara earlier than expected. Too bad Tara got interrupted before she could call her back. :cry But I imagine that when she's done at dinner, calling Willow will be her first priority!

I just wanted to tell you what a great job you are doing with the Willowbabble. I'm a natural babbler, so it's easy for me to write, but I can see where it's difficult to a non-babbler. So again, great job! :applause

I bet it's not long before Faith is doing the same thing to Tara's door!!

Looking forward to the next update!!

Bummer about the interruption, I hope Willow doesn't misinterpret.

zampsa19752001 - No, nosiness, not always the best. But Tara will be talking to Willow very soon. No worries there.

SMGOVAN - Feeling a little better, thanks. And Buffy will definitely find something else to occupy her time. We can't have her Bogarting Willow's new love interest. And thanks for the kind words about my writing.

Finey_McFine - Saturday night date night will definitely be in the works very shortly. But talking to Willow is definitely at the top of Tara's list. And thanks again for you're comments about the Willow-babble. You write your story so well and I'm such a big fan so it means a lot.

LonelyTara - All will be cleared up shortly. I promise.

bouncer73 - No Saturday night in this chapter but there's Willow/Tara interaction. Can't go wrong there.

Chapter 8

Tara took the another sip of her wine and glanced again at the clock on the far wall of the restaurant. This dinner was taking way too long and they hadn’t even gotten their food yet. So far she’d listened with one ear through their salads, picking at hers as Faith and Anya talked about Anya’s upcoming trip. Not that she wasn’t excited for her friend but she had way too many other things on her mind. Or just one big thing.

‘Willow.’

“So Tare, you’re like super quiet tonight. Are you ok?” Faith asked as the waiter returned to clear their empty plates.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” she said, shaking herself out of her thoughts.

“Are you sure?” Anya piped up. “I mean you’re really quiet. Even for you.”

“Yeah,” Tara answered once again. “So you were saying something about the hotel you’re staying at.”

“Oh yeah. It’s so gorgeous. Xander was telling me...” Once again Tara’s mind drifted off. Thinking of Willow and wishing she could hear the red head’s voice. Knowing that she couldn’t wait for the entire dinner she quickly excused herself and left the table, purse in hand, before either of her friends could even respond. She made her way outside and parked herself on a nearby bench. She reached into her bag and quickly located her phone, scrolling through the recent calls on her phone and finding Willow’s number almost instantly. Taking one final breath she called the number and waited patiently for an answer.

She watched as the other restaurant patrons milled around the front entrance and waited for what seemed like an eternity. She was just about to hang up when she heard the sweet sound of the redhead’s voice on the other end.

“Hello?”

“W-Willow? It’s Tara.”

“Tara hi! How are you?”

“Good, how are you?”

“I’m great. I’m um... really glad you called,” Willow said as she sat at her kitchen counter and twirled on her stool.

“Yeah, s-sorry I didn’t call earlier. I w-was in meetings all day and then I had to come meet some friends for dinner. I-I was about to call you when they showed up.”

“That’s ok. It’s no big deal,” the redhead fibbed, knowing she’d spent all afternoon freaking out that she’d scared the blonde off.

“Anyway, I just wanted to call and l-let you know I’m still free on Saturday. I-If you still want to go to d-dinner,” Tara said.

“Absolutely. I’d love to,” Willow said, failing miserably to control her excitement. “What time would you like to go?”

“Whenever you can. I-I’m free all d-day actually.

“Really? Well ok. I’ll make a reservation. How about seven?”

“S-Sure,” Tara stuttered. ‘God can I wait that long?’

“Ok, great. Do you just want to meet there?”

“Yeah, that sounds f-fine. I’ll m-meet you there at s-seven then,” Tara said.

“Great. I can’t wait,” Willow said, thining she really couldn’t.

“I hate to c-cut this short b-but I just left my friends sitting at the t-table in the restaurant.”

“Oh, of course. Well thanks for calling me about it. I’ll see you Saturday.”

“Great. B-Bye,” Tara said as she hung up her phone. She stood up, a huge smile on her face and made her way back into the restaurant, finding Faith and Anya still sitting at the table, their dinner’s having arrived but seemingly untouched.

“Hey,” Faith said, as the blonde sat back down. “Are you ok?”

“Yeah, sorry, I just remembered there was a call I had to make,” Tara asked.

“To who?” Anya asked.

“No one. Just someone I have plans with on Saturday night.” Tara tried to hide the lopsided smile on her face but her friends saw it plain as day.

“Do you have a date?” Anya asked.

“What? What are you talking about?” Tara asked taking another drink of her wine.

“Did you know about this?” Anya asked, turning to Faith.

“Nope,” Faith answered. Though she’d gotten an earful from Buffy earlier in the day she wasn’t about to put her friend out there. She knew Tara would come around to talk to her when she was ready. In the mean time, she instantly felt her protective side switch in gear and even though Anya was their good friend, she wanted to help Tara out. “Oh wait, was that the thing you were telling me about the other day? The dinner for work?”

“Yes!” Tara answered, instantly knowing what Faith was doing and grateful that her friend was there.

“Work dinner?” Anya asked, somewhat skeptical. She may not have lived with the duo but she knew the two well. “On a Saturday night?”

“Yes,” Tara answered. “For an o-out of town client.” Anya just smirked, Tara’s stutter instantly giving the lie away.

“Oh, ok,” she said, taking a bite of her dinner, deciding to give the shy blonde a break. For now. “Well have fun.”

Tara just smiled, greatful to both of her friends for not pushing her. And for Anya to use her tact for the first time that meal. Unfortunately it didn’t last long.

“So like I was saying, apparently the walls are like super thick and the neighbors won’t be able to hear anything the whole time we’re there. Yay for loud sex!” Faith laughed once again as Tara choked on her wine.

*************************************************************************************

“Alright, so that was interesting,” Tara said as she and Faith arrived back at their apartment. Faith laughed and tossed her keys on the kitchen table.

“Well at least she kept the sex talk to a minimum,” Faith said. Tara just looked at her. “Well at least to a minimum for Anya.”

Tara just giggled and made her way into the apartment, kicking her shoes off as she went before plopping down on the couch. Faith plopped alongside her and laid her head back against the back of the couch. They sat there in silence for a moment, both just relaxing after the long day.

"So about earlier, thanks," Tara finally said.

"For what?" Faith asked, turning to her friend.

"For helping out with Anya and the whole Saturday night thing," Tara said, playing with her fingers in her lap.

"Oh, Sure. Yeah, no problem. It was no big deal," Faith said, slightly uncomfortable with her friend's grateful attitude.

Tara knew thanking her friend was going to make Faith uncomfortable but she still wanted to get her point across. Faith changed the subject though.

"So, I know you're busy then... do you maybe want to hang out Friday? Maybe do a movie night? We haven't had one of those in a long time."

"Ok, sure. I have to work until about seven-seven thirty. So we can when I get home."

"Deal. I'll get the movies and food so we can just chill when you get here."

"Sounds good," Tara said with a smile, thinking for the millionth time since she'd met her that she was more than grateful to have her best friend in her life. "I'm going to go do some work though. It's a busy week. And I'm going to be in meetings around town all day tomorrow." Again Tara smiled her famous lopsided grin, knowing there was a specific meeting she was looking forward to.

"Ok," Faith said, kicking her feet out on the cushion Tara had just vacated and turning on the television. "Just don't work too hard."

*************************************************************************************

Willow continued to stare at her computer, her mind anywhere but on work. She and Buffy had hung out the night before over pizza and re-runs of Sex and the City. She'd been nervous about Buffy's behavior on the phone the day before but the night had thankfully gone smoothly. They'd actually just had a fun evening together. Now if she could just focus on her work and stop looking at the calendar on her desk, counting the days until her date with Tara, she'd be ok.

'It's way too far away,' she thought as a knock on her open door brought her out of her thoughts.

"Mr. Sanders, hi," she said, smiling at her boss in her doorway.

"Willow, how are you?" he asked as he stepped inside her office.

"Great. Did you get the information I sent to you this morning?"

"Yes and it looks great so far. I was just wondering though if I could tear you away from your work for half an hour to come to a meeting with me? I'd really like your input."

"Sure," Willow said as she stood up and followed him out of her office and to the elevator banks. "I should have the rest of the program we were working on last week finished for you this afternoon."

"That sounds great Willow," her boss said as the elevator arrived and he motioned for her to step inside first. He punched the button for a lower floor and turned back to the redhead. "You've been working so hard lately, don't think I haven't noticed. I'm very appreciative of your dedication."

"Oh it's no problem. I love the job, you know that," Willow said with a smile. "So what meeting did you need me for?" she asked as the elevator stopped and the doors opened.

"I just want you to see the plans for the new office and get your opinion on it. I love what the new architect we hired came up with but since you're going to be the head of the department after the move, I want to be sure it's satisfactory."

'New architect?' Willow thought, as they approached the conference room. 'I thought he loved Tara's design.'

She followed him into the conference room, suddenly saddened by the thought that Tara didn't get picked for the job. Her fears were instantly erased when she saw the blonde seated at the table in the room.

'Tara!'

Tara turned upon hearing the two entering and couldn't contain the smile on her face.

"Tara, a pleasure to see you again," Mr. Sanders said as he stepped forward and took Tara's hand between his.

"You too Mr. Sanders," Tara responded before turning to the redhead, unable to control herself.

"Tara, I'd like you to meet Willow Rosenberg. She is going to be heading up the department in the new building when we move," he said, standing aside for the two women to greet each other.

"Hello Willow."

"Hi," Willow just responded, using ever ounce of her willpower to keep from bouncing on the balls of her feet.

"So, if you're ready, I'd like to go over the plans again and the few changes we asked about last time," Mr. Sanders said as he motioned for the two to sit down a the conference table.

The two took their seats and Tara instantly launched into her plan, showing the new changes. Willow was in awe. The stuttering, nervousness that she was used to from the blonde was nowhere to be seen. Tara was confident as she went through the plans and never once lost her place. Willow was surprised, not only by this but by the great work that the blonde had done. Her plans included everything that their office was looking for as well as plenty of room to expand. It was perfect.

"So I think that covers all the changes you asked for. Was there anything else you wanted or anything you're not satisfied with?" Tara asked as she finished her presentation.

"No! This is great!" Willow said, unable to control her outburst. Tara and Mr. Sanders both looked at the redhead and smiled. "Sorry. I mean, it just looks really great."

"She's right," Mr. Sanders said with a smile. "Tara this is perfect."

"Well I'm just happy you're pleased," Tara said with a smile. "I'll have the contracts sent over first thing tomorrow morning." The three stood up and Mr. Sanders shook Tara's hand once more before excusing himself to another meeting that he was running late to. Willow stood at the doorway as Tara packed up her things, watching the blonde put everything away.

"So, he loves you," Willow said, referring to her boss. Tara turned and smiled shyly.

"I don't know about th-that," Tara said, the proximity of the redhead making her stomach float.

"No he couldn't stop raving about you after your last meeting. I can tell he's thrilled," Willow said. "And you really did do a good job,"

"Thanks," Tara said, dipping her head.

"So, are you headed back to work now?" Willow asked, not wanting to leave the blonde yet.

"No. I actually h-have meetings the rest of the d-day."

"Oh, so I guess I should let you get to it," Willow said, the disappointment in her voice obvious.

"Well, a-actually, I don't have another meeting for a little bit. A-Are you b-busy? Do you m-maybe w-want to grab something for l-l-lunch?" Tara asked, cursing her stutter around the redhead once again.

"Really? Sure," Willow said. "I'd love to. There's a bunch of little places up the street we could eat at."

Dibs... Hey, Beautiful update. I love the idea of Faith, Tara and Anya being Bff's. They kinda balance one another out. Glad Tara was able to take a moment to call and put Willow out of her misery. The impromptu lunch date was a nice touch. I would hate to see how much Willow would have tied herself in knots by obsessing for many, many moons over her soon 2 be date.

Just caught up on this and I love it! Super cute. You've balanced out the friendship dynamics really well and I keep thinking how accurate your summary is - 'the happy bumblings of falling in love'. Perfect!

Looking forward to their Saturday date and how else things progress :)

So happy to see your update today! It made a rainy, depressing Monday much better!! ;-)

I really like that your drawing things out a bit, to me the anticipation is the best part. Big yay for Tara scooting out in the middle of dinner to call Willow.

The meeting at Willow's office was great! The way they are both trying to hide their level of excitement and failing miserably. Willow with her loud excited voice and Tara with the stutter. You are doing a great job with the writing, I especially loved how Tara's stutter only emerged with Willow. It just shows that Willow has the power, with presence alone, to throw Tara's emotions into a frenzy.

I love it!!! Keep the regular updates coming!!!!!! :pinky :pinky :pinky
