Fixing Old Fics Request Thread

Postby Foomatic » Thu Jun 23, 2011 10:37 am

Hey everyone!

When we transitioned over to the new board, a lot of our older fics in the archives became riddled with HTML and EZcode tags making them near impossible to read. If there is an archived fic that you want to read but can't, post it here and we will edit it to make it nice and pretty again.

Please post the link to the fic to make it easier for us to find it. Also, please know that the process does take some time, and the mods all have different levels of "real life" craziness, so be patient with us if your requested fic does not get fixed immediately.

Thanks!
Foo

Off the top of my head:
On Second Thought
Gods Served and Abandoned
As Time Goes By

Tempus Fugit (Season 4)

Don't actually fix them by hand. Use something like Notepad++ and grep. Much, much faster, and you can do multiple files at once.

I've already fixed "One Second Thought" and "Tempus Fugit S7." There are html to BBcode converters that make the process easy so that we don't have to go into each fic and manually delete out the code. That would drive me insane and I would have never volunteered to do it. Heh.

Once the others are done I'll post here.

For authors willing to fix their own fics, here is an HTML to BBCode converter If it's an older fic and your posts are listed as guest or one of the moderators send us a PM and we can change that so it can be edited by the author.

Dammit, Heather, I swear you're just posting repeatedly in Pens but not updating to tease us.

Sigh.

I mean, uh, Foo, I was wondering why TF Season 7 looked okay. I thought I was going crazy when I double checked it and saw it was better.

Hi Foo,

Thanks to the mods for doing this. Some of Sassette's early vignettes are in the old code. Does the program fix the feedback too?

Sassette'sVignettes

Hey, I figured out how to do a link! (At the fifth attempt.) Now I can have me a snazzy sig.

Having to fix each feedback post makes the process more tedious, so right now we're just focusing on the posts containing just the fic. Maybe at a later date we can do it, but right now we're concerned about readability.

Thanks Foo.

People probably already know this, but I found that for recent posts that have lost the 'centre' coding, you only need to hit 'edit' and then resubmit to correct.

And just to show off my new skeelz, Sassypoo's Answering Darkness could use a little love. (And BeMy, nobody is more upset about the lack of updates than me, promise. Hoping for sooner rather than later.)

ETA: Brass ring to wayland! Thanks!

Oops, sorry guys. I took the little bracket thingies out of my original post. Also, when you reply to a thread, there's a BBCode link underneath all the smilies that'll tell you how to code stuff. Additionally, you can use the grey-ish buttons under the subject line, just highlight the text you want to code and hit the appropriate code button, and viola! No need to know what to type.

Here's another tip: If you need to provide a link to a specific post, on OGKitten there is a yellow box at the left of the date the post was created. Click that box. The specific post will be appear at the very top of your page with an extended url. On Dirty Kitten click the square next to the author's name of that post.

In prosilver, the title of each post is a link. You can copy it by right clicking, then selecting, "copy link address".

Sassette's Answering Darkness got some lovin' as requested.

note: the first 40 chapters have almost no feedback so if you want to read it with all the wonderful comments check it out on the old board: Answering Darkness with feedback

So glad to see y'all are taking the time for this!

How about Terra Firma, And It Went A Little Something Like This, Legends of the Kiss, and Remember to Breathe.

Thank you!

can I put in a request for Come Away With Me?

thanks guys, I would be happy to faff around modding stuff as well, is there an easy way a non-mod could change stuff and send you it in a word doc or something or is it too much hassle?

It doesn't quite work that way. Each individual chapter (post) must be copied and saved first, converted to BBCode using a converter tool, edited with fixed code, previewed then submitted. There's a lot of searching thru comments for the chapters and copy/pasting involved. Converting all the posts that need fixed and sending the info in a word doc, or multiple word docs, would not help. Unfortunately, there is no way to convert multiple posts at once. It is a very long process and great care must be taken that each post is edited correctly with its full, original content. It takes a lot of hours to fix just one story and that is why the feedback is not being converted. In the meantime.. you can still read these fics, without the visible html coding, on the old board.

I'm pretty sure someone's been fixing Darkness Falls cause some of the early chapters look fine but if not, can you guys have a look at it?
