I'm a few days late in posting about this, but last week civil unions became legal in Rhode Island.
On the surface this is a great victory, but the way the bill was written allows for a LOT of discrimination, and numerous gay rights groups actively stood against it. On the one hand, some recognition is better than nothing, but on the other hand the new law doesn't give nearly all the rights it should; my personal fear is that such a law will lead people who are on the fence about same-sex marriages to go, 'well they've got civil unions now so they don't need anything else,' when in reality the unions in this particular state will fall far short of the rights of marriage.
