The sunlight pouring into the window was a noiseless alarm clock, thought Willow. Just as effective and just as annoying. She opened her eyes slowly, squinting into the sunlight before pushing away the covers and standing up. She hissed softly as bare feet came into contact with cold floor. She moved quietly to the window before the rising sun hit Tara’s pillow.
Or the crib resting next to the bed. Willow pulled the blinds shut and walked over to the tiny bassinet.
“Good morning princess.” She whispered softly as wide blue eyes met her own, “Baby hungry? Mommy left a bottle in the fridge, let’s see if we can let her sleep in today, okay?” Willow smiled, picking up the infant. She and Tara had been adamant about doing the natural parenting thing, from breast feeding to Raine’s cloth diapers. However, Willow demanded the ability to feed their daughter, and Tara had relented, buying a pump and keeping at least one bottle of milk in the refrigerator at all times.
Willow held Raine with one arm as she warmed the baby’s bottle.
“Should we go visit Buffy today, little one? I bet Joy would love to play with you.” Willow was worried about her best friend, alone with a toddler and eight months pregnant with her second child. Taking the baby over was a great way to distract two-year-old Joyce Angela, who thought the baby was the best thing since her Barbie doll.
The bottle sufficiently heated, Willow carried Raine to the living room and sat down on the couch. Raine latched to the nipple and began sucking hungrily, her blue eyes watching Willow intently.
Tara stood in the doorway, watching Willow cradle their daughter in her arms as she fed her. Saturday mornings alone were fun, Saturday mornings with Raine were even better. She felt complete now, her own little happy family…Mommy, Mama (Willow had balked when Tara had suggested Raine call her Daddy) and little baby Raine, beautiful already with her fiery hair and cobalt eyes. Her princess, her daughter, just 37 days old.
A soft sigh made Willow look up, “Tara! You were supposed to SLEEP!”
“Couldn’t,” Tara smiled, “Bed got cold.”
Willow shrugged, looking down at the baby, “Someone got hungry.”
“I see that,” Tara moved to the couch, sliding an arm around Willow and resting a hand on Raine’s stomach.
“Good morning, Baby.” She said, grinning like a 6 year old on Christmas morning, “And good morning, to you too, Raine.”
The bright sunlight streaming through the window no longer bothered Willow. She smiled to herself as the rays bounced off Tara's prism wind chimes, creating rainbows.
At seven AM that Saturday morning, Willow knew why she had been born. Not to help Buffy fight the forces of evil, not to be best friends with Xander, but to be here. To be with her family.
