Tara returned to the cabin as the sun was setting. When she walked into the living room, she was surprised to see Spike sitting on the couch. “I didn’t expect you to be up yet.” she said tossing her stuff on one of the chairs. She plopped down next to him on the couch. “Sleep well?”

“Like the dead.” he told her and taking a drink from his beer.

Tara quirked an eyebrow in his direction. “Doesn’t that go without saying?” she said with a perfectly straight face.

“You’re a riot today.” He muted the TV and looked as the blonde witch. “You look different.” He knew something had happened while she was out, but couldn’t determine if it was good or bad.

“Yeah. Happy and sad at the same time is the best way to describe it.” she shrugged. “You just kind of end up with ‘blah’ at the end.”

“So what were you doing out there for so long?” he asked

“Communing with nature.” Tara simply replied.

“Come on Blondie. If you’re gonna lie to me at least try something believable.” Another swig. “We didn’t come all this way so you could talk to the trees.” he commented dryly.

“I got some answers, but they only led to more questions.” she said staring at the empty fireplace.

“Like what?” he nudged.

“What’s best for me.” she sighed.

Spike didn’t even think twice before he spoke. “Willow is.”

“How do I get passed what she did to me?” she said as she looked at the blonde vampire.

“What is it with you birds? It’s always about what we did, not why we did it.” He shook his head. “Like when I got the Buffybot. She was pissed.” He took a swig from his beer. “She should have been flattered. All I wanted was her and was willing to do with her twin. Instead, she thinks its all obscene.” he leaned his head back. “Red did the same thing. Yeah, she did a spell on you, but it was because she didn’t want to lose your love. Again, bad method, good intent.” He stood up and walked over to the fridge and pulled out a beer. “Mistakes happen Blondie. People get lost. The question is, can they find their way back?” he grabbed his smokes off the table and walked out on the deck.

“I want to.” she said in a small voice.

“Then what are you waiting for already?” he called from outside.

Tara hadn’t expected him to hear her. She walked over and joined him out on the deck. “A guarantee. A pledge. A promise. Anything that will assure me that nothing like this will ever happen again.”

Spike took a drag of his smoke. “There’s no such thing in life luv. That’s the way it is. Raw. Unpredictable. Ever-changing. That’s Life. There are no guarantees. Never were, never will be.”

She considered his words carefully. He was right. Life was a game of risks. If you weren’t going to take any, then why bother to play in the first place? “Do you regret still having the chip in your head?” she asked smoothly integrating the topics.

“Best thing that ever happened in my entire undead life.” he told her honestly.

“She’ll come around totally, if you can just be patient.” she answered resting her hand on his shoulder.

“I’ve got forever, how long will it take her?” he asked taking another drag of his smoke.

“Not as long as you think.” she said running her hand down his arm. She looked up at the night sky and thought about Willow. ‘We’ll be together soon sweetie.’ she silently vowed to Willow. She looked back over at Spike. “I’ll go make us some dinner.” she told him as she headed back inside the cabin.

‘Willow, you are one lucky lady.’ he thought looking up at the moon beginning its voyage across the sky.

------------------------

Dawn picked up the phone at the Summer’s house and was thrilled to hear the blonde’s voice. “TARA!” she shouted.

“Hi Dawn. How’s everything?”

“Uh, everything’s cool. “she said suddenly unnerved. ‘What do I tell her about Willow?’ she wondered. “So how’s the middle of nowhere? Have you tried to dust Spike yet?”

Tara chuckled. “The middle of nowhere is extremely peaceful and Spike is being a perfect gentleman.”

“I thought he was a vampire.” she snidely commented.

“Yeah, that too.” she snickered.

“So what’re you up to right now?” Dawn questioned trying to postpone the inevitable a little longer.

“Cooking dinner.”

“Sounds exciting. So? Any idea how soon you’ll be heading home?” she asked trying not to sound all needy and stuff.

“Spike and I will be home tomorrow after dark.“ Tara reassured the teenager.

“You’re coming home already? That’s good news, right?” Her voice cracked at the last word. She knew Tara didn’t like her insinuating things about her and Willow’s relationship, but sometimes she just couldn’t help herself. And if Tara was gone for only 2 days, then she must have made a good decision, right?

“Well, that will all depend on Willow.” she answered truthfully. “Is she around?”

Dawn’s heart soared at the response, then dropped at the question. Dawn bit the inside of her lip. She didn’t want to be the one to tell Tara that Willow was gone. “No, she was doing something with Xander. Bonding time or something like that.” she said holding her breath. She had never tried lying to the witch before and wasn’t sure if she was going to get away with it.

There was a long pause. Dawn feared that Tara knew she was lying. Finally, she spoke. “Buffy around?”

“Patrol.” she simply answered.

“All by your lonesome, huh?” she asked feeling bad about not being there.

“Yeah, but talking to you makes all things better.” Dawn happily told her. That was something Dawn never would have to lie about. Tara could always make things better, whether is was with a stupid joke, a funny face, or just a warm hug. “So tomorrow night…is that a promise?”

“Yes, absolutely, positively, beyond a shadow of a doubt - kind of promise.” Tara responded.

They talked for several more minutes. Fortunately, Tara didn’t ask anymore about Willow. Finally, Dawn hung up the phone. She sighed heavily and rolled her eyes. 24 hours to figure out how they were going to tell Tara that Willow was gone. It would be ugly. ‘I wonder what the chances are for an apocalypse before tomorrow night?’

----------------------

Back across the pond , Giles and Willow were sitting in the University of London’s main library, with many books spread out on the table in front of them. After Anya had called, Giles decided that they had to find all the information they could as quickly as possible. Anya was very quick to point out what would happen if the witches stayed as they were. Giles could still hear Anya’s words running thru his head. “Remember what Tara was like after Glory got a hold of her? That’ll be Willow pretty soon. Maybe even worse.” If something scares the 1000 year old ex-demon, it’s for a good reason.

They had been researching ‘the magical bonding of souls’ all night. Giles lowered his book and checked his watch. ‘Almost 4 AM’ He set his book down. He leaned over and gently tapped Willow’s shoulder. “We really should go get some sleep. Exhaustion isn’t going to help us accomplish our task.”

Willow shook her head. “Giles, we still don’t have any way to undo this bonding. I can’t keep Tara involved in something that she doesn’t want.” She proclaimed adamantly and returned to her reading.

Giles stood and then pulled out her chair. “Giles…” she started to protest, but was silenced as a hand covered her mouth. “You’ve been going non-stop since this afternoon. There is no immediately danger to either of you, unless you are determined to push your body passed the point of exhaustion, which I am positive is already the case.”

Willow closed her eyes. She knew he was right, but she wasn’t concerned with her own needs right now. The only thing that mattered was Tara. “Can we take some of these volumes with us?” she said pointing towards several open texts on the table.

Giles smiled. If she was relenting to at least leaving the library, it was a step in the right direction. “Yes. I actually hold high credentials with the university.” he told as he removed his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose. “Select what you want and I’ll return the rest to the selves.

Willow rolled her eyes as she sifted thru the books. ’Forever the librarian.’ she thought.

After checking out the books Willow wanted, they headed towards the car. Once they walked out into the darkness, Willow realized just how tired she really was. As she looked up at the sky, she wondered how she would explain everything to Tara about the soul bonding. “Giles, how am I gonna tell Tara about this? She can’t stand to be in the same room as me. Heck, she hasn’t even spoken to me in weeks. Not that I blame her after everything that happened, after all it was my fault and I did do some terrible things…”

Giles gently interrupted her babbling. “Willow, while I have dearly missed your endless prattling, I’m afraid I am hardly in the mood to deal with it at this precise moment.”

Willow eyes went wide. “Did you just nicely tell me to shut up?”

Giles blushed. “Ah, um, well yes. I believe I did. Sorry.”

“You’re worried, aren’t you?” she asked, her voice hollow.

Giles wanted to leave her with nothing but hope, but he was very confident about anything at this point. “Willow.” He briefly pondered side-stepping her question or a nice little white lie. He was too exhausted to do either. He unlocked his car as he answered. “As things stand right at this moment, yes I am.” he finished putting some books in the backseat and then got in himself. As Willow closed her door, Giles grabbed her hand. “We will find a solution to this. Somehow. I promise.”

As Giles started the car, Willow stared out the window. She looked up at the stars and recognized ‘The Big Pineapple’ immediately. “I’m holding you to that Tara.” she murmured as she leaned against the window and quickly fell asleep.

Giles stared curiously at the redhead. ‘She’s so tired, she’s delirious.’ he thought as he made the final turn towards his flat. ‘At least I hope that’s all it is.’

How could Giles possibly have known that she actually responding to her lover on the other side of the world?

Hmmm, what's next I wonder? Another warm moment with Spike and Tara...and maybe one very upset witch.

Well I am still hopelessly far behind, but maybe I can catch up now. Assuming my server stops acting so hinky.
I think that parts 3-6 have some better writing and a few less rougher parts. Pushing the Buffy/Spike relationship much further into mutual love is interesting to see. Especially the idea that Buffy fell for him quite a while back. Definitely different. I like how you have Tara and Spike interacting, that seemed well done. Anya still seems to be acting at times too human, but at other times like normal. The scenes with Xander and Anya were very good. The Willow and Spike section was also interesting. Spike does have a good knack at knowing exactly what is going on between couples. Sending Willow to Giles for aid in recovering is a cool idea. Some of the Spike/Willow interaction seemed rougher than the rest and I’m not certain I follow the reasoning there, it seemed a bit odd.
I do like the parallels of B/S vampire/slayer and W/T addict/witch. Very astute, I wonder if they will notice that on the show?

Buffy returned from patrol to find a frantic younger sister running around the house picking up. “Wow. You’re actually doing your chores without me having to threaten you.” She considered her statement with a cocked head. “Alright, who are you and what have you done with my sister?”

Dawn grabbed a throw pillow and whipped it at her sister. “Very funny. Renting yourself out to the circus anytime soon?” She threw back.

“Nah. They so couldn’t afford me.” She flopped down on the couch. “Ok, so spill. What’s up with the nervous cleaning? Did you have a date over while I was patrolling?” Buffy asked.

Dawn finally stopped. She walked over and sat down next to her sister and put her head on her shoulder. “I so wish. No, it’s worse. Tara’s coming home tomorrow night.” She picked her head up and looked Buffy in the eyes. “She asked me about Willow tonight on the phone and I kinda lied to her.” she explained. “Buffy, I know I shouldn’t have, but she said some stuff...and I didn’t want to ruin anything by saying something and now I feel so guilty...UGH!”

Buffy put her arm around Dawn’s shoulder. “So let me get this straight. Tara sounded all get-back-together-y, so you inherited a case of dumb blonde for a moment and now your doing the guilt trip thing?”

Dawn nodded.

Buffy kissed her on the head. “Well, if I know Tara, once she gets your side of the story, she won’t be mad.” Buffy considered it for a moment. “I don’t think Tara knows how to get mad, does she?”

Dawn snickered. “Well, not that I’ve seen it often, but there was this one time this summer when she caught Willow checking out our waitress at dinner...”

Buffy was like an eager child. “Then what happened?”

“Well, I never actually saw anyone touch the glass, but a full glass of ice water was mysteriously dumped in Willow’s lap!”

Buffy and Dawn burst into a fit of giggles. Buffy finally calmed enough to speak. “So did Tara confess?”

Dawn shook her head. “No, but anytime I’ve been with them at a sit down restaurant, Willow won’t even look at the server, whether it’s a he or a she.” she finished and was lost in another round of giggles.

After the laughing had finally ceased, Buffy pulled Dawn up from the couch. “Come on. Let’s get some sleep so we can be rested to face the Wicked Witch of Willow Wraith.” She told her sister as they headed up the stairs to bed.

-----------------------------

After they had eaten dinner, Tara had talked Spike into watching The Birdcage with her. “You know you want to.” she had taunted him. They had enjoyed the movie, saying the funnier lines out loud. After the movie, Tara had disappeared into her bedroom, telling Spike not to have too many beers. She walked out of her room a short time after, retrieved a mug from the kitchen and then returned to her room.

Spike was slightly confused, but decided that he would do as he was told. After finishing his current beer, he headed out on the deck for a couple smokes. When he was in the middle of his third one, she joined him on the deck. She had a comforter wrapped around her shoulders and was carrying two mugs filled with liquid. One steaming, and one not. She handed the non-steaming mug to Spike. Right away he caught the smell and stared at Tara. “How did you...?”

Tara smiled as she sat down on one of the chairs with her tea. “Magical I.V.” She snickered. “Think of me as a wiccan Kerry Weaver.”

Spike noted the lesbian doctor comment and rolled his eyes. He took a sip of the blood and was almost overwhelmed. It tasted so sweet and pure. When most vampires fed, the blood they drank was full of fear and had a bitter taste. He had never been given someone’s blood of their own free will. He was moved beyond words by this incredible young woman sitting on the deck. He took a seat next to her. “Could you be any bloody kinder? You‘ve gotta be up there for sainthood by now Blondie.”

Tara shook her head as she took another sip of her tea. “No. I just wanted to find a special way to thank you for coming up here with me.” She watched the steam as it rose from her cup. “You’ve been surprisingly wise company.” she stated with a genuine smile.

“I don’t deserve something like this.“ he said nodded to his mug. Spike took another sip and stared at her. “Why?” he asked wanting to understand her reasoning. “I’m evil.” he insisted. “I’ve done some pretty sodding awful things in my day.” he reminded her. Spike couldn’t place what he was feeling at that moment, but he knew the emotion was foreign to him. His voice became small. “How could you do something like this for me?”

“There’s good in all things.” she quickly reminded him. “Sometimes it’s obvious, other times you have to dig deeper. Despite what you’ve done in the past, you’re trying to be good now. That’s the important thing.” She took another sip and locked eyes with him. “Right now, you’re feeling guilt. You’re not used to it.” she told him knowingly.

“Guilt?” he said raising an eyebrow.

“You don’t think that anything can make up for what you’ve done. You know you can’t change the past, but for the love of the slayer you’ll move heaven and earth trying.” she gave him an evil grin and beat him to his next question. “Yes. It is that obvious.”

Spike took another long drink of the blood in his cup. He reached into his pack and took out another cigarette. As he went to light his smoke, he stopped and pointed it at Tara. “How can you always manage to see the best in people?”

Tara shrugged and looked up at the moon. “Must be hereditary.”

Spike lit his smoke and took a drag. “Can’t be. I met your family remember? Your pop’s a jackass, as I recall.”

Tara smiled as she closed her eyes and pictured her mother sitting in front of her earlier this afternoon. “True, but my mother was an angel.” She opened her eyes and pinned Spike under a steely blue gaze. “We can‘t determine where we‘re going based on where we‘ve been, right?” The moment she said the words, she realized she was looking for reassurance for herself more than for him.

Spike also immediately understood that she was talking about both their situations in that single statement. “Absolutely luv. Absolutely.” he agreed. Spike was suddenly filled with another new emotion, hope. Maybe he had a chance with the slayer after all. He looked down at the mug in his hand still overwhelmed at the generosity of the blonde. He decided now would be a good time to nail her with the big question. “So, you gonna give Red another chance?”

Tara’s face glowed. Spike knew her answer before she said it. “Yeah, I am.”

Spike snorted. “Well, you bloody well better make her beg first.” he said desperately trying to maintain his stature as the Big Bad.

Tara’s laughter could be heard echoing throughout the forest.

Comments Parts 7-12

I have less to say a this point as I think you are doing a fine job the story is really moving along now. Your writing was cleaner up until part 12 which had more errors that the others.
I like the treatment of Spike, though he seems a bit too friendly with Tara, but otherwise you have him down very well. I like the idea that Willow is not really addicted to Dark Magic and there is something involving a soul bonding going on, that is very cool. I also do like the mirroring of Tara and Willow's situations. It was nice to have Giles get back involved and be able to figure out what is going on, with some help from Anya who gets underused in this way in the show, but I found some of Giles' dialog a bit off. Maybe not formal enough?
You did a good job with Dawn and her concern for Tara as well as her interaction with Buffy. Nice job weaving the widely scattered groups together into a cohesive story. Keep up the good work.

Willow woke up feeling better than she had in weeks. She couldn’t quite reason why, but she knew that something good was approaching. After showering and changing, she joined Giles in the kitchen, who was already busy reading. “Good morning Willow. There’s coffee on the stove.”

“Thanks.” she said walking over to the stove and pouring herself a cup. She sat down at the table and reached for a croissant. “Anything new to report? I‘m guessing you‘ve already been at it for a few hours.”

Giles removed his glasses and rubbed his eyes. “Yes well, I thought it best to let you sleep.”

Willow nodded. “Thanks.” She prodded once more. “Anything?”

Giles took a sip of his tea. “Well, we know that this had to have happened rather early on in your mutual practicing, otherwise the stoppage would not have been as difficult on you. The longer the bond is in place, the harder it becomes to remove it. Generally, these sorts of bonds are only formed by couples and after many years.”

Willow tried to take in the meaning behind his words. They had created a bond between them that would have taken most people years. Was the bond formed more from magic or love? “So how could two young witches-in-love form such a bond?”

Giles put his glasses back on and pointed to a passage in the text that was sitting in front of him. “It says here that a bond can be formed instantaneously if the initial meeting is in a time of great danger.”

Willow rolled her eyes. “Does running for our lives count?” she said sarcastically.

Giles nodded. “Precisely. From that moment on, every spell that the two of you cast together served to strengthen the bond. And once you became…” Giles blushed. “romantically involved, the resources pouring into the bond were easily doubled, if not tripled, depending on your…ah, level of commitment.” Giles quickly rose from the table and hurried over to the stove to pour himself another cup of tea.

“So would there have been any signs?”

“Signs?” he questioned looking over his shoulder at the redhead.

“Yeah you know…how would we go about strengthening it?”

Giles quickly faced the stove again. His blush increased and speech was suddenly extremely difficult. “Well, I suppose if you were to, well what I mean is if you two ah…” His head dropped as he closed his eyes. “cast while you were…” he tried to finish while stirring his tea.

Willow blushed in realization of what Giles was attempting to say out loud. “Love magic?” she offered as an escape route.

“Oh dear lord.” he said dropping his spoon.

“What?!?” she questioned indignantly. “That is what you were getting at, isn’t it?”

Giles could only nod. After a moment of composing himself he returned to the table with a full cup of tea. “So, if we take that into consideration with the number of times that the two of you performed…” he paused unwilling to further humiliate himself. “that particular brand of magic, we can determine the strength of the bond. That should allow us to determine how to go about severing the bond.”

Willow smiled at the thought of making love with Tara. Their sessions were always passionate and overwhelming. Every time Willow touched Tara, it was like the first time. Electricity surged between them. Nerves endings came alive. Fingers touched every inch of the other’s body with reverence and love. Mouths and tongues never stopped tasting, sucking, and licking. Their hunger for one another was never truly sated. They never rushed and always cherished every moment together. It was a rare occurrence for them to actually be on the bed by the time they were done making love. They were typically several feet instead. Finally, she shook her head trying to clear her mind of such lustful thoughts. “Um, well about once or twice.” Willow finally explained.

Giles nodded and took a drink of his tea to calm his nerves.

“A week.” Willow quietly finished.

Giles spit his tea across the kitchen table.

-------------------------

Anya arrived at The Magic Box surprised to have 3 messages waiting for her. She pressed play and listened to the messages while she counted the money in the cash register before she opened.

BEEP - “Anya, It’s Giles. We’ve had a rather interesting breakthrough regarding Willow and Tara’s situation. I could use your input on a few things. Please call as soon as you can.”

Anya swelled with pride. She wouldn’t admit to anyone, but she secretly loved it when they asked her for help. She liked being able to contribute.

BEEP - “Hey An, I’ll be by with lunch around 1. I love you.”

Xander. Anya sighed deeply. He loved her. She never tired of hearing him say that. She couldn’t wait until the wedding in a few more months. Despite all her years taking revenge against men, she had fallen madly in love with one. She never thought she’d see the day.

BEEP - “Anya, Buffy. We’ve got a five alarm fire at our house after dark. Tara and Spike are coming home tonight and I could really use you and Xander here for some support when we tell her that Willow’s AWOL. Call me, we can do a dinner thing. Maybe some comfort food?”

“Tara‘s gonna flip.” she said aloud, shaking her head. Anya picked up the phone and quickly dialed England. She was slightly surprised when Willow answered the phone.

“Giles Residence.”

“Just the redhead I wanted to yell at.” she said in an accusatory tone.

“Nice to hear from you too Anya.” Willow noted back to the ex-demon.

“Tara’s coming home tonight and we have to explain that you decided to runaway without telling any of us anything. She’s gonna be all upset, then she’s gonna cry. I can’t stand it when Tara cries and you are going to yet again be the source of her tears and its just wrong. I won’t have it Willow.” Anya said in one long exasperated breath.

“I’ll be home tomorrow.” she reassured the ex-demon.

“This is not the world according to Willow. There are other peoples’ feelings to consider and,” she suddenly grasped what the hacker had told her. “Did you say tomorrow?”

“Yes Anya. Giles and I are flying back tomorrow morning.” she explained.

“Oh, well good. Glad you‘re finally starting to listen to me. Respect your elders.” she chided in a way that only Anya could. Smartass-like, but totally honest at the same time.

Willow rolled her eyes. Anya maybe older, but sometimes it was questionable if she was wiser or not. More practical, without a doubt. “Anyway, Giles wanted to ask you about the Rite of Anteros.”

Anya sucked in a quick breath. “Why would you have to deal with Anteros?”

“Well, we have to break the soul-bonding and according to our research we would have to get Anteros to permit us to do it.” Willow paused. “Are you saying that’s a bad thing?”

“Well, that depends if you are in a hurry to end your life. Anteros was one of my favorite Gods to work with as a Vengeance demon. He was, specifically, the god of mutual love but would punish those who did not return love. Therefore, if he sees your bonding as a gift and you ask him to take it away, he’s gonna get pissed and someone’s gonna pay big time.” Anya warned. “You don’t return a gift from the Gods. It just isn‘t done.”

There was an audible gulp on the other end of the line. “We’ll keep looking.” She quickly amended. “Do you think Xander could come pick us up at the airport tomorrow?”

“Sure thing.” she said in a cheerier tone.

As they hung up the phone, Anya was filled with a sense of dread. She hadn’t told Willow the whole truth. If Anteros was involved, the bond could only be broken if one of them was killed. Tara would never go for that one. Willow would probably be all willing in the name of love, but Tara would freak cause she wouldn’t be willing to let her do something like that for her. “If they would just get back together, then now of this would be a problem.” She said walking to the front door to open the shop for the day.

--------------------------

Tara spent most of her last day at the cabin outside in the forest. Spike was asleep. She had already cleaned up the cabin and packed most of their stuff back into the Jeep. She had taken a blanket and a bottle of wine she had found under the sink down to the stream to meditate. She unfolded the blanket next to the stream and knelt down facing the water.

She looked up the sky. The sun was hidden behind a few clouds, but it was still a fairly warm day. There was very little wind, so the forest was quiet, except for the stream’s running water. She ran her fingers lightly over the water’s surface and began chanting softly. When she opened her eyes, she saw her heart’s desire. Willow.

She looked good, but sad. Willow was wearing one of Tara’s sweatshirts. “Willow.“ she softly whispered. Tara reached up to touch the locket that Willow had given her years ago. Willow nearly repeated the gesture, putting her hand over her heart Her breathing suddenly increased and Tara noticed beads of sweat forming on her forehead. Willow suddenly looked up towards the ceiling, as if she was looking directly at Tara. Emerald eyes spoke of love and longing. “Tara?” she softly questioned to the sky.

Tara’s eyes filled with tears. She didn’t want to draw Willow’s attention, it just sort of happened. She had only intended to watch the love of her life for a few minutes. Tara didn’t want Willow to think she was spying on her. She immediately removed her hand from the water and the image faded. After seeing the look on Willow’s face, Tara was beside herself. ‘She felt me. I know she did. But she couldn’t have. She would have had to have been casting in return.’ Tara was filled with many more questions, questions that only a certain redhead could possible answer.

She opened the bottle of wine and poured herself a glass. As she sipped the wine, thoughts ran threw her mind at the speed of light. Tara had no explanation for why Willow had felt her. ‘If she was casting again, then I can’t go back to her.’ Tara finished her wine and laid down on the blanket, facing the stream. All the hope that she had starting building seemed to come crashing down in a single moment. Tears dampened the blanket as the blonde witch cried herself to sleep.

-------------------------

Willow looked around the bedroom trying to determine what had just happened. She was positive she had felt the blonde’s presence, but wasn’t quite sure how. She walked out into the living room to find Giles packing his suitcase.

“Giles.”

He put down the shirt in his hands and regarded the young hacker. Something was troubling her. “Is anything the matter?”

“I felt Tara.”

Giles heard the words but didn’t comprehend the meaning for a brief moment. “Yes, I understand that this has been difficult for you but…”

“No Giles. I felt her. Like the whole mystical type feeling that I-of-all-people shouldn’t be doing.”

Giles was shocked and disappointed. When he spoke, his voice was cold and hollow. “I can’t believe you would do this to her.”

“Giles, that’s just it. I DIDN’T CAST!” She screamed, her body shaking even more now. “Don’t I have to consciously invoke the powers? I was just sitting on the bed reading and then BOOM, I feel Tara out of nowhere. I notice the feeling, then it’s gone, as quickly as it came.”

Giles removed his glasses and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Dear lord.” The ramifications of this new development shook Giles to the very core of his being. “You felt her casting from the other side of the world?” he said rubbing his temples.

Willow’s mouth gaped at what he was suggesting. She was speechless. She did manage to nod.

“If the bond is this strong, Anteros would kill you both before he would let you break it.” he admitted to her in a quiet voice.

Willow dropped down into one of the armchairs. ‘Baby, I don’t know how to fix this one.’ She took a depth breath and pressed onward. “What are we going to do?”

Giles smiled. “Well I dare say it would be in everyone’s best interests if the two of you got back together, wouldn’t you?” he said with mirth in his eyes.

Willow recognized the Watcher-with-a-plan face. “You’ve got something up your sleeve, don’t you?”

Giles walked over and gave her a kiss on the forehead. “Yes, I do. Now go pack. Our flight leaves in a few hours. We’ll need to leave for the airport after we eat.”

Willow nodded and headed to the bedroom to pack her things.

As Tara and Spike prepared to leave the cabin, Tara was unusually quiet. As they were walking out to the Jeep, Spike couldn’t take it anymore. “I thought you would be happy to be heading home to see your sweet. What’s up?”

Tara climbed into the car and slammed the door. Spike noted the action, and waited patiently for her to open up about what was bothering her. She finally murmured, “She cast.”

“Rot! How can you be sure?” he asked.

Tara took a deep breath and explained what had happened at the stream. “She had to have cast.” she insisted.

“You don’t know that for sure. There’s got to be another explanation. Something I‘ve learned about magic over the years…anything‘s possible.” Spike started up the Jeep and pulled away from the cabin. “I saw her before we came up here. She was killing herself trying to figure out how to make things up to you. There is no way she would have been using magic. She knows she has one foot in the grave with you, using magic at this point would bury her completely.”

Tara considered his words. The entire Scooby gang had been telling her how hard Willow was trying. Something just didn’t fit, but she just couldn’t figure out what it was. “What if the cravings got to be too much for her?” she suggested.

Spike shook his head adamantly. “No way. After what happened to Dawn, she would cut her own arm off before she would go back to magic. I’m sure of it.”

Once again, Spike’s words sent her minding reeling. If Willow did want to her back, she would know that she would have to give up magic. Tara had learned a long time ago, once Willow put her mind to something, she didn’t quit until she accomplished her goal. ‘I’m missing something, but what?’ She finally decided not to make any judgments until she faced Willow. When she did, she’d know if she had been practicing or not. And if she was, then it was truly over. “Wish I had your confidence.” she commented offhandedly.

“Give her a chance to explain first Blondie. Red loves you.” He didn’t want to see the blonde hurt, but he didn’t want to see her run away from the greatest opportunity of her life. “Not many people get a second chance.” he reminded her.

Tara stared at the blonde vampire and smiled. “No, and when they do they usually have to work really hard to get them.” She reached down and gently squeezed his hand sitting on the arm rest.

“Nobody’s willing to work that hard unless the other person’s worth it.” he agreed.

Tara’s mood suddenly lightened to the plight of the vampire. “Must be something about blondes huh?” she teased.

Spike flashed her a dirty look, then grinned. “Yeah, must be Blondie. Must be.” he reached down and flipped on the country station. “Next up we have a dedication going out from Bill to Sara. Seems like someone’s in the doghouse. Here’s Ricochet.” As he heard the first words of the song, he rolled his eyes. ‘How bloody appropriate.’ he thought.

I saw your mama and she said don’t call you
Talked to your best friend and she said no need to
But I had to tell you
I hate how I hurt you
Now I know how bad I hurt me too

If I got to get down on my knees tonight - I’ll do it
If you want to see me cry - then baby let’s get to it
If I got to beg and plead to make you see - I need you in my life
Love is stronger than pride

I got no right to ask you to forgive me
But I got no choice cause its about to kill me
Well I’ve been headstrong
And I was dead wrong
But one minute more without you is just too long

If I got to get down on my knees tonight - I’ll do it
If you want to see me cry - then baby let’s get to it
If I got to beg and plead to make you see - I need you in my life
Love is stronger than pride

Tara stared out the window as the next song stared. ‘Willow, please let there be a reason.’ she begged up at the stars as the scenery flew by.

-----------------------------

Dawn was staring out the window and Buffy was pacing. Xander sat on the armchair with Anya on his lap. Xander tried to lighten the mood. “So, where’s the party tomorrow?”

Buffy stopped pacing and stared at him. “Is that the get-in-line-to-kick-Will’s-ass party?”

Anya regarded the slayer. “I think Tara gets first dibs.”

Xander chuckled. “Yeah, cause Tara could get violent with Will. Like that would ever happen.”

Anya threw him a deathly serious look. “Never under estimate the quiet ones. They’re always the ones that are holding so much in that when they do decide to let loose, it’s terrifying.”

Xander recognized Anya’s tone of voice. She was speaking from experience. Before he could ask her about the comment, she started telling them a story.

“I remember this girl, she was shy and kinda withdrawn. Her first love used her. Kinda like Parker did with Buffy.” She offered as a comparison. The slayer shot her an evil glance for mentioning the jerk’s name. “Anyway, she calls me, I figure she’ll wish him to never be happy or something kind of soft, no way. She makes a wish for a different organ of his to be mailed to her every year on her birthday.” Anya shook remember the look in her eyes as she made her wish. “That wish kept him alive until he was nothing but skin and bones - literally. She knew what she was doing and loved every minute of it. So don‘t say the quiet ones are safe.”

Xander felt a chill run up and down his spine.

Buffy looked over at her sister who suddenly looked freaked. Buffy went over, sat down, and put her arm around her shoulders. “Dawn, Tara could never be like that, and you know it.”

Dawn leaned into her sister and spoke quietly. “It‘s not Tara I‘m worried about.”

Buffy considered her sister’s words. If Willow came back and couldn’t work things out with Tara, what would happen? She silently prayed she would never have to find out. Buffy’s thoughts were interrupted by the Jeep pulling up out front.

Dawn stared out the window. “They’re here!” she said jumping up and running to the door to greet them.

Buffy sighed. “Come on Xander, let’s go help unload.” She said getting up from the couch. Xander quickly followed.

When Tara saw Dawn rushing out to greet her, her mood lightened considerably. “Dawnie. Hey.” she said wrapping her arms around the teenager. “Missed you.” she said giving her a kiss on the top of her head.

Dawn tilted her head up and gave Tara a quick peck on the cheek. “No more self-imposed hiatuses anytime soon, ok?”

Tara smiled and gave Dawn another squeeze. “Not unless I take you with me, how’s that?”

Dawn nodded and finally released the blonde witch. As Tara went to open the back door, Buffy grabbed her hand. “I don’t think so. You go inside. Xander and I will unpack.”

Tara wanted to argue, but once she noted the slayer’s dreaded resolve face, she knew the effort was futile. Tara wrapped Buffy in a big hug. “We need to talk later.” she whispered in Buffy’s ear. As Tara pulled back, she drew Buffy’s attention to the blonde vampire smoking next to the Jeep.

“Oh.” was all Buffy could manage to say. She was suddenly filled with questions. Had Tara seen something? Did Spike tell her something? Is she made at me? The thoughts continued until Tara placed a gentle hand on her arm.

“It’s a good talk.” she said sensing the other girl’s dread. Tara gave her one last smile, then headed off with Dawn into the house.

Xander grabbed a few bags and carried them into the house, leaving Buffy and Spike alone. Spike took a final drag of his smoke. “So luv, ya miss me?” he said chucking the butt. He walked over and wrapped his arms around her back. He leaned down and gave her a kiss full of passion and longing.

Buffy relished the sensations running through her body at that moment. She didn’t understand why, but the vampire made her feel alive. She pulled back, a bit breathless. “Yeah, you could say that.” Spike went to pull her in once more, but the slayer stopped him. “Spike, wait for patrol, ok?”

“Couldn’t let anyone else find out about your liaisons with the Big Bad, eh?“ Spike scoffed. He grabbed a box from the trunk and started towards the house. He spun around and fixed an icy glare on her. “Hate to break it to you pet, but it’s not a secret anymore.” he told her and walked into Xander coming out the door.

“Human/vampire…human gets the right of way, don‘t you know anything?” Xander baited the vampire. He was surprised when instead of starting a jib fest, which the men were prevalent to, Spike’s retort was a simple, “Sod off.” as he walked in the house.

Xander joined Buffy back at the Jeep. “What’s his problem?”

Buffy shrugged. “Must be hungry or something.”

-----------------------

Tara and Dawn walked in the front door to an excited ex-demon. Anya rushed over and engulfed Tara in a fierce hug. “I knew you’d come back!”

Tara smiled and returned the hug. “Was there ever any doubt?” she asked.

Anya considered the question. “Well, there’s always a chance that Spike could have bit you, made you a vampire, turned you into his little love bitch. Or maybe some strange woman captured the two of you, and took you home to bake in her nice adult-size oven. The possibilities are quite endless.”

Tara chuckled. Anya certainly had her own way to expressing emotions. Anya pulled her over to sit down on the couch. “So, anything interesting happen while surrounded by all the woods-y trees?”

Tara nodded. “The strangest thing was acknowledging the fact that Spike has an appreciation for gay films.” Tara shrugged. “Go figure.”

Anya shook her head. “Although fascinating and definitely worth discussing later, that’s not what I meant. Decisions about a certain redhead?”

Tara caught Dawn’s grin out of the corner of her eye. Apparently, she hadn’t told everyone about the information she was given. “I decided its kinda up Willow. Where is she?”

Before either of them could answer her question, they heard Spike and Xander’s exchange at the front door. Tara saw Spike’s face as he walked into the house and immediately headed for the kitchen. He had to have had an argument with the slayer. ‘Love, ain’t it grand.” she thought sarcastically. She turned her attention back to Anya. “So, Willow?”

Anya shook her head and looked at Dawn. Tara noticed the exchange and then look back and forth between the two women. “Ok, is someone going to tell me what’s going on?”

Buffy and Xander walked in at that moment with the rest of the supplies from the Jeep. Dawn stared at her with an expression that screamed help. Xander caught the look. “Let me guess. Tara asked the $64,000 question, didn’t she?” he said heading for one of the armchairs.

Buffy didn’t say anything until she caught Anya’s nod from the far side of Tara. Buffy sighed and sat in front of Tara on the coffee table. “Willow’s not here.”

“W-w-where is s-she?” Everyone recognized what the stutter meant. Tara was scared.

Buffy took hold of Tara’s hands. “She’ll be here tomorrow. She took a quick trip to England to see Giles.” Buffy took a depth breath. “She found out you had left, she thought it was a good idea, so she did too.”

Tara slowly calmed, then turned to look at Dawn with a pained expression. “Why would you lie to me?”

Dawn could see the disappointment in the blonde‘s eyes. “I didn’t want to. I just wanted you to come back!” She shouted and run up the stairs.

Tara was momentarily stunned at the teenager’s reaction. Buffy drew her attention as she spoke. “Tara, don’t be mad at her. She was afraid that if we told you Willow wasn’t here, that you might not come back. We thought it was for the best.”

“How could I get mad at her for doing the same thing I had done?” Tara questioned.

Anya chose that moment to add her two cents. “Well, you were nice enough to tell us where you were going and said goodbye.”

Tara’s eyes went wide as she grasped what Anya meant. “She ran away, did-didn‘t she?”

Buffy nodded. “She just left us a note that said she was leaving, and she would be back eventually. Giles called as soon as she got to England.”

Tara had so many things to process, she wasn’t sure where to begin. “I think I better go talk to Dawn.” she said and headed up that stairs.

After a moment of silence, Xander asked for the verdict. “So, that went well, right?”

His fiancé and the slayer both shot him dirty looks. “Or maybe not.” he said retreating as far into the chair as he possibly could.

Tara knocked on Dawn’s door. She tried the handle, but the door was locked. “Dawn, it’s me. Please open the door. I wanna talk to you.”

Silence.

Tara decided to try a different approach. “Dawn, you know I can open this door if I really want to. Please don’t make me.” Dawn knew how Tara felt about frivolously using magic. In a odd sort of way, it was like a wiccan guilt trip.

Tara heard a ‘click’ and the door was opened about an inch. By the time Tara opened the door, Dawn was already back on her bed curled up in a ball. She walked over and sat on the edge of the bed. “Talk to me Dawnie. I’m not leaving. I’m right here.” she reassured her.

Sobs racked Dawn’s body. “I just want things back to the way they were. I want everyone together and happy again.” She sniffled into the pillow. “And I don’t want anyone to leave anymore.”

The light bulb went off in Tara’s head. In a single day, she had thought she was going to lose both of them. Tara moved up closeer to Dawn on the bed. She slowly started stroking her hair. Dawn calmed slightly. “Dawn, I’m not mad at you. I could never be mad at you. I understand why you thought it would be better to lie to me, but do you understand why its not?”

Dawn raised a tear stained face up from the pillow. “What should I have done? Told you she disappeared?” she shouted incredulously.

Tara looked down and sighed. “Yes. I had a right to know. If Buffy disappeared, would you want us to lie to you about it?”

“Maybe at first.” she said quietly.

“Dawn.” Tara responded in her best motherly voice.

“Ok, I get it. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

Tara pulled Dawn into her arms. “No one ever means to hurt the ones they love, it just happens. Sometimes we think we’re making things better, but in reality, we’re just making them worse.” Tara suddenly felt things were getting too heavy, she decided some humor was in order. “Fortunately, love, forgiveness, and cocoa makes all things better.” she said with a sly grin.

Dawn couldn’t help but giggle. After a few minutes, she totally composed herself once again. She turned to look at Tara with eyes full of appreciation. Tara always knew what to say, and how to make things better. “You know I love you, right?” Tara nodded.

Tara tugged at Dawn’s arm and pulled her to her feet. “Come on, hot chocolate will make all things better.” she said dragging the teenager from the bed.

“How do you know?” she questioned.

Tara replied, “I’m a witch. Witches know stuff.” The two girls chuckled as they walked down the stairs.

-----------------------

Tara and Dawn walked into the kitchen. Tara put a kettle of water on to boil while Dawn dug out some packets of hot chocolate. “Since we’re on this honesty kick, I have a question.” Dawn began.

“Shoot.”

“This summer when we were at Antonio’s, and Willow was gawking at the waitress, was that a frivolous use of magic on your part?” Dawn noted the slight confusion in Tara’s eyes, so she clarified. “Full glass of ice water in Willow’s lap?”

Tara blushed a deep crimson. She knew she had to be honest. “Um, I considered it channeling Anya at the time.”

“Oh my god! Wait till I tell Buffy I was right!” she said hurrying out of the kitchen.

Tara beamed at seeing the teenager back to her animated self. Thru the kitchen door, Tara noticed a shadow smoking a cigarette. She opened the door and joined him on the porch. “So was that a new record or do you guys always get into fights that quickly?”

Spike sighed. “She doesn’t want anyone to know. They all love her, what’s the bloody difference!?”

Tara looked up at the stars overhead. “Willow didn’t tell them about us right away. It’s not easy. She’s scared of what they’ll think, what they’ll do.” Tara sighed deeply, thinking back to a similar discussion with Willow a long time ago. ‘I know all about them, but they don‘t know about me right?’ she could remember asking Willow. “It’s not as cut and dry as you’d like to think. From what Willow told me, Buffy and Xander kinda freaked.”

Spike pointed at her. “You know about us. Do you care?”

Tara rolled her eyes. “I think we’ve already established this. Of course I don’t care. If the two of you are happy, who am I to stand in the way?”

Spike hung his head in embarrassment for asking her such a stupid question. “Can you convince the rest of them to think like that?” he asked honestly.

Tara heard the tea kettle whistling inside. “I can certainly try.” she said giving him a quick squeeze on the shoulder as she went back inside to make hot chocolate.

-----------------------

Several hours later, Xander and Anya had left promising to return the next day with a redhead and a watcher. Spike went back to his crypt, telling Buffy if she needed any help on patrol to stop by and see him.

After Dawn was finally asleep, Buffy and Tara argued over where Tara would sleep. Buffy said that she could just sleep in their (Will & Tara’s) room, but Tara felt uncomfortable. Tara told the slayer she would be fine on the couch, but Buffy said “Not when there are perfectly good beds to sleep in.” Tara finally relented and said if Buffy would sleep in Willow’s room, she would take her bed. Buffy was content at the mutual agreement. “Well, you get some sleep. I’ll see you in the morning.” she said grabbing her jacket from the coat rack.

Tara was slightly surprised. “You’re leaving?”

Buffy paused, but only briefly. “Patrol.”

Tara nodded her head. “Swinging by to pick up Spike?” she asked innocently.

Buffy took a deep breath. “He told me you knew.” she said hanging her head. ’This must be what she wanted to talk about.’ Buffy thought. “Are you mad?”

Tara couldn’t keep the absurdity out of her voice. “Why would I be mad?”

“Ok, maybe more like disappointed?” she offered instead.

Tara shook her head. “It’s love Buffy. There‘s nothing any more wrong about you loving Spike than there is about me loving Willow.”

“He’s a demon.” Buffy reasoned

“So was Anya for over 1,000 years. Try again.” Tara countered.

“He’s a vampire.”

“So was Angel.”

“He doesn’t have a soul.”

“Angel was cursed with his soul. Spike’s been blessed with his.”

Buffy‘s eyes went wide. “Spike doesn’t have a soul.”

“See, that’s where you’re wrong.” Tara said walking over to the stairs. “You‘re his soul and the only one who can take that away from him is you.” she started walking up the stairs. “Have fun ‘patrolling’.” Tara said giving Buffy a wink over her shoulder.

Buffy watched the witch as she disappeared around the corner. Could she be right? Is there a chance for her and Spike after all? She walked out the front door with a new feeling in her heart. Hope.

-----------------------

After an hour of patrolling, Buffy wandered into Spike’s crypt. “Spike!” she called out. Getting no answer, she descended the stairs to the lower level of the crypt. Spike was sitting in front of a large drawing of Buffy. “Spike?” she tried once more.

“Leave me alone.” he glanced over his shoulder at her. “I’m not in the mood to be your secret right now luv.” he said returning his attention to the portrait in front of him.

“It’s not a secret anymore. Tara knows.” Buffy pointed out, still standing a good 10 feet away from him.

“Ah yes, the lesbian witch with the open mind. That’s not really telling though, is it? Doesn’t mean the same thing as telling Xander or Willow.”

When he heard no verbal response, he turned in his chair to look at her. “Probably tried to make excuses to her, didn’t you?”

She couldn’t lie, so she simply nodded.

“I bet she trumped every one.” Spike was starting to like having someone on his side for a change.

Buffy suddenly found the ground incredibly interesting.

“S’what I thought.” He stood up to face her. “Did you listen to anything she had to say?”

Buffy felt her temperature rise and her fists tighten as anger suddenly ripped thought her. The hope she had felt earlier was once again being overcast by fear. “Why do you both think this should be so easy for me?” she said punching a nice whole in the stone cavern. “I can’t go thru another worthless relationship which ends up with me being rejected. I can’t. It scares me. I did the vampire thing once, it turned to shit.”

Spike couldn‘t contain the anger that the name Angel brought forth. “BLOODY FRIGGIN HELL!!! I AM NOT ANGEL!” He screamed. The anger disappeared as quickly as it appeared. “I never was and I never will be.“ He said in a flustered tone. Spike approached her tentatively, not wanting to fuel her frustrations, but needing to make her understand. “I love you. What more can I do to prove that to you? Say the word and I’ll do it.” he said dipping his head down to look her in the eyes.

The tears starting running down her cheeks. She fell to her knees as the sobs racked her small body. With a tear stained face, she looked up at him. “Show me.” her voice dropped to a bare whisper. “Make me believe in love again.”

She was waiting for him to drop down on top of her and start kissing her. She was surprised when he sat down behind her, wrapped his arms around her, and simply held her. After many minutes of the silent embrace, Spike finally spoke. “I can’t show you unless you open your eyes pet.”

In that single statement, everything became so clear to Buffy. Spike had done everything he could to prove his love. And he kept on doing it, even after she had died. Everything the slayer had always wanted was within her grasp, she simply had to reach out and hang on to it for dear life. She unclasped his arms and spun around so she was kneeling between his legs. Looking at his face, she saw the single tear slide down his cheek. In that moment she knew…he truly loved her and nothing would ever change that. She put her hand up on his cheek and wiped the tear away. “I just opened them.” she said breathlessly.

At first, he didn’t comprehend what she had just told him. It wasn’t until the slayer’s lips were upon his own, that he finally understood. She had just given him his second chance. Now it was up to him not to screw it up.

----------------------------

I decided to do a little Buffy/Spike...since Blue77 suggested that all the couples deserve a little happiness after they all managed to break up this season. Nothing explicit, but I hope it gave off some good vibes.

Oh, and what's the best way to embarass the witch? Can you guess? Next time...

Song - Let Love Lead the Way by The Spice Girls (Post-Geri if anyone cares...LOL)

-------------------------

Somewhere above the clouds, a certain redhead was having difficultly sleeping. She glanced over at her father-figure who was reading a book. “Why won’t you tell me your plan?” she asked for the 30th time since they had left England. “I mean, it’s my life I would think I have a right to know what someone is going to do to try and change it.”

Giles considered what she had just said, and before he could halt the remark from leaving his mouth, he laid a little guilt trip on her. “My, aren‘t we feeling a bit hypocritical this evening?”

A moment of confusion flashed in her eyes, but quickly faded. “I am not. I just want to know how you’re planning to fix my love life.” she sounded like a wounded puppy.

Giles‘ brow furrowed at the fact that she had totally missed his point. “What if I said it was a spell?” he said trying to get her on the right track.

Willow stiffened. “You can’t. I can’t. There’s no way that I can get Tara back with magic. I won’t do it. Anteros can kill me first. Fine whatever. Not betraying the love of my life like that again. Out of the question.”

Giles closed his book and removed his glasses. “Willow, I would never suggest such a thing. Your reaction does give me hope however.” He took a deep breath and started explaining himself. “After Buffy died, you became very systematic and efficient. There was only a single course of action, only one road to follow. It usually involved magic. Now, you’re willing to look at the entire realm of possibilities again and avoid shortcuts. You’ve made significant progress.”

Willow took in his words. He was being honest and open with her. Willow decided it was time to hear his opinion of everything they were attempting to do. “Do you think I deserve her back?” her tone was meager and regretful.

Giles features softened considerably. No matter what she had done, she would always be one of his children. “You deserve all the riches this world has to offer, including Tara. You clearly earned them once, you can earn them again.” He raised a finger as if warning her. “It's going to be a difficult road. You must earn her trust and faith again.”

She nodded, knowing every word he said was true. “How long do you think it will take?

“How long are you willing to try?” he said putting his glasses back on.

“For the rest of my life.” she answered honestly.

“A good start would be by telling her that.” he said opening up his book to read once again.

'Why didn‘t I tell her that sooner? What was I waiting for? Why didn‘t I apologize?' With all the new questions buzzing in her head, she momentarily forgot the one question she had wanted him to answer in the first place. “Hey no fair. You still didn’t answer my question.”

“I answered several of them actually.” he reasoned.

“That’s just wrong.” she told him putting on her best pout-y face. “Come on Giles, tell me please.”

He lowered his head to look at her over the top of his glasses. “Begging will fair no better than intellectual conversation I‘m afraid.” As he turned his attention back to his book, he glanced at Willow out of the corner of his eye. “However, you might want to keep it in mind when we see Tara.” he said with a chuckle. “Oof.”

Willow, not appreciating his humor, elbowed him in the ribs.

--------------------------

Tara was in the kitchen making breakfast. Last night, Dawn had begged her to make pancakes for breakfast. Tara promised Dawn that she would wake up to funny-shaped pancakes. She looked over at the clock. ‘7:36, its still kinda early for breakfast.’ she thought. Tara decided after tossing and turning most of the night, she would just get up. She was too nervous about seeing Willow. What would they say? Had she cast? If she didn’t, could they make it work? Could they make it work if she had? So many questions, but no answers to any of them.

She put some grounds in the coffee maker and turned it on. She decided she would get the pancake batter ready for when Dawn woke up. As she was mixing the batter, she reached over and pressed play on the CD player. The chords rang out and Tara rolled her eyes. ‘The Spice Girls? You're killing me Dawn.’ Tara wanted to turn off the British bubblegum band, but a slow song came on and for some unknown reason, she let the music play.

What makes this world go round?
Will the answer let her down?
She is so sweet and young
And her life has just begun

What does her future hold that's the story left unknown
Will she make it through her days, let her love lead the way

‘I must be tired.’ she thought. ‘I’d almost swear they were talking about me.’

Part of me laughs. Part of me cries.
Part of me wants to question - why?
Why is there joy? Why is there pain?
Why is there sun shine and the rain?
One day you're here next you are gone
No matter what we must go on
Just keep the faith and let love lead the way

Everything will work out fine
If you let love... love lead the way

Sitting there all alone
In the window of her room
Watching the world go by
Brings tears to her eyes
All she sees is hurt and pain, she wants to break the chain
She'll keep pressing everyday and she'll find her own sweet way

Tara sat down at the kitchen table and stared at the portable stereo dumbfounded. They were singing ‘her’ song. The feelings, the actions, everything she had been going thru was in this song. She finished beating the batter and pushed it aside as the song continued.

Part of me laughs. Part of me cries.
Part of me wants to question - why?
Why is there joy? Why is there pain?
Why is there sun shine and the rain?
One day you're here next you are gone
No matter what we must go on
Just keep the faith and let love lead the way

You can be all that and still can be who you are
You gotta know for sure that it isn't make believe
You may feel weak but you are strong
Don't you give up girl...
If you keep holding on, you'll never be wrong
Just close your eyes cause it lies deep in your heart.

Tara closed her eyes. ‘That’s almost the same thing my mother told me.’ she remembered. ‘Do what’s best for you’ she had said.

As the song came to its conclusion, so did Tara. There would be no more questions, no more doubts. Since the moment she had met Willow, their love had been the one sure thing in her life. The only way for Tara to be happy was if she followed her heart. And Tara’s heart had only one home. Willow.

At that moment that the back door opened and a happy slayer walked in the kitchen. “Good morning.” she said with a voice so chipper, even the bluebird of happiness would have been annoyed.

Tara smiled at Buffy. “Yes, it is.”

“What are you doing up so early?” the slayer questioned as she closed the back door.

“Getting some good advice and making breakfast.” Tara replied waking over and turning off the coffee maker.

“Ooo, pancakes?” Buffy squealed as she noticed the batter sitting on the table.

“As soon as Dawn gets up.” Tara promised.

The slayer was suddenly drawn back to a prior comment. “Wait a minute, good advice?”

“Yeah, some wise women set me straight on a few things.” She explained, then amended. “Not literally of course.”

Buffy let out a laugh. “Care to share?”

“Willow and I are getting back together, no matter what.” she said in a manner which suggested there could be no other option.

The slayer rushed over to Tara and wrapped her in a big hug. “That is the best news I have heard in the past 6 hours!”

Tara grunted slightly as the slayer put a little too much into her hug. “Air?” Tara hissed. After the slayer released the witch, she continued the conversation. “Ok, so now you want to tell me what has the slayer so excited at 7:48 in the morning?”

Buffy sat down in the chair opposite Tara. “I talked to Spike last night. We’re going to make it work, not sure how, but we’re going to do it.”

Tara couldn’t resist. “See? I told ya so.”

Buffy nodded in acceptance of Tara’s words. “Yeah, you did. I guess I just had to be told enough times so I’d believe it.” Her eyes looked up to the right remembering what had finally broken her resolve. “Spike crying helped too.” she noted.

“He cried?” Tara said slightly surprised at the slayer’s admission.

“Yeah, that’s when I knew…he loves me. After that, all my fears seemed…unfounded.”

Tara nodded understandingly. “I know exactly what you mean.” she agreed.

“So, the Scooby gang is 2 for 3, with a possible perfect score tonight, right?” The slayer suggested optimistically.

“I don’t know if score is the right word.” she said a little wary. “It’s been a month.” she reminded Buffy.

Buffy rolled her eyes at the sexual innuendo. “And they say witches don’t have dirty minds.”

Tara put on her most sly smile. “I never said that.”

“No, but the rest of us did. Little did we know that our innocent wiccan wasn‘t really innocent after all.” Buffy pointed out with amusement.

“Yes I am.” Tara was trying desperately to maintain her status as the innocent member of the Scooby gang.

Buffy‘s eyes narrowed. “Tara, the walls aren’t that thick. I repeat, NO YOU ARE NOT.”

Tara blushed a deep crimson. When she thought she couldn’t be embarrassed anymore, she heard the voice from behind her say, “Sorry Tara, but I gotta agree with her.” Dawn said giggling.

Tara put her head in her hands and sighed loudly. “I’m never gonna live this down, am I?”

The Summer sisters looked at each other for a moment, shared an evil grin and both replied with an emphatic, “NO.”

“Wait until I get my hands on Willow.” Tara muttered under her breath, but not low enough to avoid slayer hearing.

“Isn’t that what started this whole mess in the first place?” Buffy countered. After Buffy explained Tara's comment to her sister, they both erupted in laughter once again.

Tara decided it would be better for both her reputation and her complexion if she just started fixing breakfast.
