Episode 5 "New Star Rising" Part 4

Postby Bagheera » Sat Aug 10, 2002 5:25 pm

funkyasian - Thanks, well, "Buffy" always had bands, and of course there was OMWF. In this Season 7, the PTB come to their senses and hire Amber as the house band. Kewl, huh?

Jen - Wait no longer, it's a double post weekend. Tara will have a fairly mixed set, but the songs have been chosen as much for their lyrical content as for how they sound.

Xita - Thank you. Here's more.

Rating: PG-13.

Musical credits: “Closer to Fine”, Emily Saliers; “Shadow Cabinet”, Steve Kilbey

Cautionary note: Actual song lyrics are quoted in this and later sections of the story. In places they make possible reference to events and situations in this fic. They are not intended to be prophecies or spoilers. Trying to over interpret them will do your head in. And some of them are there for fun.

As Tara played, and her silvery voice rang out, perhaps a little too loudly at first, Willow moved from table to table, reaching into her backpack and placing a small empty tin can in the centre of each, next to the sugar bowl. Each can had a piece of paper taped to it, decorated with little coloured pencil flowers and birds, along with the message, “If the music makes you grin, drop a coin into the tin.” The deal with Ray was, it being a trial of an unknown artist, in spite of her acquaintance with the departed Rupert Giles, strictly a tips-only arrangement. Nothing up front, no risk, no hard feelings if it didn’t work out. Willow finished making her rounds of the tables and turned to watch how Tara was doing. She had not dared to look before, though the sounds resonating from the twelve-string and Tara’s vocals had sounded good enough to Willow’s inexpert ear.

Well darkness has a hunger that’s insatiable,

And lightness has a call that’s hard to hear,

Tara sang.

Fascinated, Willow let her green eyes rest upon her beloved as a new facet of the jewel that was Tara was revealed to her. The music was fine, the voice angelic, the look especially to Willow’s possibly biased eye, was beyond beauty. The overall impression was that of a born chanteuse. And it’s not just me, Willow thought, looking around. Feet shuffled, conversations slowed and stopped, heads turned, Ray popped his lower lip out and nodded, which for him was a supreme compliment. What was it about Tara that made her singing and playing so special? Was it the forceful precision of her guitar playing, her strident attack on the strings with the pick, or the strength in the fingers of her left hand, able to grasp elusive chords and reaches with superhuman ease? Was it her face, her aloofness, her pale otherworldliness accentuated with subtle eye shadow and deep ruby red lipstick? The look in her eye that said, “Abandon hope all ye that come hither”? Or was it that exquisite crystalline voice, beautiful as a fairytale nightingale’s, soaring above the sonic carpet of the guitar? Willow tried hard not to be a critic, to dissect Tara’s performance and place it under a microscope. She was content to watch her lover and enjoy; to note with swelling pride as people responded with a smile, a nod, or on occasion by reaching into their pockets for spare change.

It had been quite unexpected when Tara had telephoned her at work with her idea. When Tara had outlined her reasoning, the redhead had initially been unwilling, pointing out that it was her responsibility to help with Dawn’s college fund and that the additional challenge of affording blood to feed Tara’s need was also her, Willow’s, choice. But in truth Willow was financially stretched, and she had to admit that any help, even if it was only a few dollars in tips for a couple of hours’ play at the Espresso Pump, was welcome. Tara’s choice of work was also practical; she could rehearse at home during the day as much as she wanted, and it gave her and Willow an activity they could share in the evenings that got them out of the house. Willow had also been an invaluable assistant, hunting down MP3s and accurate tablatures for Tara’s repertoire. Devon had been a useful contact; the Dingoes had broken up over a year ago but just before they did, they flirted briefly with textural rock; part of that experiment being the acquisition of a twelve-string acoustic guitar which had subsequently languished, unplayed and unloved in the attic of a former band member. Borrowing it for a while had been the work of just a couple of phone calls. If Tara’s plan worked out, they had the option to buy it at a reasonable price.

Tara’s song ended, and as the last chord rang out through the intimate space of the coffee shop, a scattering of applause greeted the blonde vampire. She smiled a little, almost to herself, said “Thank you”, softly. Willow waved to catch Tara’s eye and offered her broadest smile, as if to say, “It’s great, go on!” Tara undid the capo and carefully set it down, then commenced her next song, a tune almost as old as herself. As she eased into the second verse, Tara tilted her head back and closed the rose petals of her eyelids. The single white spotlight lit a golden halo in her hair, shot with ephemeral rainbow highlights as she sang:

“Here,

The difference between close and near

The way oaths and oafs interfere

Bliss comes first as a jangling flood

The pillow from the old country arrives with a thud

And that night she dreams ceremony and mud

It’s happening, I say

Must be thirsty, drink drink sink forget

Must be empty, inside the shadow cabinet”

Tara worked steadily through her set list, smiling when the applause was loudest, nodding in appreciation whenever money found its way into a collection tin. Patrons came and went; most lingered awhile after their coffees were finished, just to listen. Ray looked busy and happy, although for him these were one and the same. Willow relaxed over a latte, savouring it, the confrontation earlier in the evening a fading unpleasant memory. Above all she felt so proud of Tara at that moment; she remembered how shy and awkward Tara had been on their first meeting; so apt to fade into the background. Now she was a confident, outgoing performer; it was difficult to believe that it was simply her vampire fearlessness that had wrought the change. Surely it was growth in Tara herself over the years, wasn’t it?

A few songs from the end of the set, Willow noticed Xander walk into the café. She saw the young man stop dead in his tracks and gape, an astonished expression on his face. The redhead caught his eye and motioned him over to her table. Xander complied, though he was barely able to take his eyes off the guitarist and as a consequence he almost knocked over two other tables on the way. He continued to stare at Tara through most of the rest of the set.

“Wow, she’s great!” he eventually said during a break between songs. “You did all this?”

Willow paused, then said, “I just did musical basics. Tara’s - software - adapts. She can practice and learn stuff by herself.”

“It’s amazing. It’s a side of Tara I never knew about.”

“She was always musical, but she was too shy to do anything about it,” Willow replied, having to raise her voice a little, for another song had begun.

Xander and Willow said little for the rest of Tara’s set. When it finally ended, the vampire stood and took a bow to warm applause. While she packed, Ray came out from behind the counter for a brief conversation.

Xander turned to Willow. “So, what other things can Tara learn?”

“Pretty much anything,” the redhead answered. “She’s reading her books from college. Mostly though, we just, you know, talk.” Xander raised his eyebrows as if to ask, what about? “Just personal stuff, my feelings, how much I miss her, what our plans for the future were. And the more I do it, the more like Tara she becomes.”

“I’ve noticed,” Xander commented. “Lately it’s uncanny. It could really be her, which makes me even more sorry about…Hey Tara,” he turned and smiled, for the blonde was approaching their table, flight case in hand. “Nice axing.”

“Not my last,” Tara answered. “Ray wants me back Monday. Money up front and a percentage of takings, we split the tips. He’s going to put signs up and everything.”

“Wow, congratulations,” Willow beamed.

“Well done, Tara,” Xander added. “Can I help collect your wages and walk you ladies home? Lot of strange folk out at night in Sunnydale.”

Tara and Willow shared a knowing look. “Not arguing with that,” the vampire said.

(To be continued)

WOW, B... you picked one of my favorite Indigo Girls, songs. You know, I can picture Amber singing that. I'm sure it would sound lovely with her voice.

Thank you for spoiling us with another update. :grin ;)

Ah, the talk of Tara-bot. Hmm... they're all gonna flip when they find out she's not really a bot. Still looking forward to that. Do we have a ways to go before they do find out?? Just curious.

I understand why Tara has taken up singing now. Lovely idea. And for her to suggest it. :love I loved that.

Thank you, again.

Looking forward to more,

This whole Tara bot thing is so gonna end badly, though I'm surprised the scoobies haven't pushed it more. I guess no one knows what exactly to think of it or really wants to deal with Willow otherwise. But seriously, how long does Willow thing she'll be able to fool everyone? And the consequences just won't be good.

LeatherQueen - Thank you. And those lines just fit so nicely into how Tara feels.

Jen - Thank you too. I've been concerned about a couple of things lately. First, I want to have this whole story up and posted by the time the RW Season 7 goes to air. It's just a deadline I've set. Second, I looked at my calendar today and noticed that I've written 20 updates in the last 28 days. This means that there is a growing back-log of updates for this story. Hence the double-update weekend. There will be a few more of those. Re finding :tara - bot out - ummm....no, sorry, just keep on reading.

Xita - :willow is such a bad liar, isn't she? But Xander can be dim at times, so she gets away with it. You probably don't agree, but I quite like the idea of Willow weaving this complex web of deception. Poor thing.

Thanatopsis - Yes, the bot story is just getting so complex now that Tara is out and about working. And you're right, the Scoobies are tip-toeing around Willow a bit, aren't they? As one does, after Season 6.

You're welcome. ;) Oooh, a deadline. I know what those feel like. Hey, I wouldn't complain if you were to post two updates at once. That would be awesome. :party

Okay, I'll try to hang tight on them finding out Tara's not a bot. I was just curious if it was going to happen soon, but it's okay. No worries, don't tell me. ;)

Hope you are having a nice weekend.

Jen: Re Updating - Yeah, I may double up, particularly for the finale, because there will be lots of loose ends to tie up, and it could get frustrating for the readers.

Another thing is that as the backlog gets bigger, I start to get a bit confused. For example, everybody's all: "oh Tara's still pretending to be a bot, this is awful, it's going to be a disaster" (which is pretty accurate, don't get me wrong), but at the moment I'm deep in the drafts of the pivotal sweeps episodes 9 & 10 and I'm thinking, "oh THAT old news". Also, having the updates sitting on my disk too long, I start to worry and I probably re-read them too many times. Put it this way, if everyone gets through episode 6 intact (and maybe 8 as well, but I think I fixed that - oh, dear), we should be all right.

Weekend - not in my time zone, not anymore.

Take care,

B

Hee... I know what you mean. When you write stuff so far in advance, then post it later and get the responses, you're like, "But.. I fixed it." Then you realize, "Of course, they don't know that yet." :lol It's okay though. I'm still looking forward to reading. And I'm sure I'll read through Chapter 6 and so on, even if it is a bumpy ride. I want to see this one out until the end. :) Looking forward to more.

Oh... you know, I was wondering. Your screenname, where does that come from. I have heard that name before, but I can't remember where. For some reason, I keep thinking, "The Jungle Book," but I'm probably wrong. I love your sig, BTW. ;)

eccentrictulip - Thank you, gosh, the one and only IGs song I can actually play, too. It was strictly for that "lightness/darkness" line in the lyrics, it fitted perfectly. A lot of IGs songs are intensely angsty, too strong even for this fic (if such a thing is possible).

Episode 5 "New Star Rising" Part 5

Postby Bagheera » Tue Aug 13, 2002 2:59 am

Rating PG-13

The next morning, Dawn was in the bathroom brushing her teeth. Tara popped in.

“Hey Dawn,” she said.

“Oh, hey Tara,” the teenager mumbled through a mouthful of toothpaste. Tara got what she had come for, Willow’s bathrobe, and left to return to their bedroom. As Tara left the bathroom, Dawn’s eyes flicked up to the mirror and she saw absolutely nothing. A fountain of white goo erupted from the teenager’s mouth and sprayed the mirror. Coughing and spluttering, for equal parts of the distasteful stuff had passed down her throat and shot up her nose, Dawn rushed to follow Tara, who was oblivious to what had happened, to her room. Dawn burst through the bedroom door to find Willow half-dressed and seated on the bed, and Tara hanging the bathrobe in a closet.

“Excuse me?” Willow scowled. Dawn ignored the redhead and marched up to the wardrobe, flinging open the mirrored door. She turned it this way and that, looking in vain for the “bot’s” reflection. Too late, Willow and Tara realised what Dawn was doing. There was complete silence for a full minute. Willow caught sight of Dawn’s reflection in the mirror and wondered what the flush of colour on Dawn’s cheeks meant.

“You’re not a bot!” Dawn eventually exclaimed. “You’re - ”

“A vampire,” Tara sighed resignedly, sitting on the bed. The game was up. She reached blindly for Willow’s hand, and the redhead took it and held it.

Unexpectedly, Dawn’s face cracked into a broad grin. “This is so cool!” she squealed. The lovers looked at one another and back at the teenager. “Oh my god! Oh my god!” Dawn enthused, embracing Tara and Willow in turn.

“You’re celebrating because?” Willow, puzzled, prompted.

Dawn looked squarely at Tara. “Because it’s really you,” she said achingly. “You came back, just like you promised.”

“I’m pretty sure I never promised to come back as a vampire,” Tara countered. “No, cancel that. I definitely didn’t promise to come back as a vampire.”

Dawn suddenly burst into a fit of giggles. “I just realised – all this time, we’ve all been thinking you’re a bot, but really -” Dawn broke off suddenly as she noticed Willow’s partial state of undress and the room she had so precipitously entered. “Oh! Look, I’m leaving for school right now and I’m going to leave you guys alone and you can do whatever you want, and if it was the weekend, I’d be watching TV, really loud, in the basement…”

“Dawn!” came Buffy’s interrupting voice. The Slayer sounded annoyed. “What is this stuff all over the bathroom?”

“Oops,” Dawn muttered. She called aloud, “I’m just getting a cloth to wipe up, Buffy!” and she grabbed a washcloth from Willow and Tara’s wardrobe and scooted out of the room. “I had the biggest sneeze you have ever seen while I was brushing my teeth,” the lovers heard Dawn saying as she went up the corridor. “See, here’s me cleaning up.”

“Okay, no problem,” they heard the Slayer say. “That’s fine Dawn, you’d better hurry or you’ll be late for school.” A single set of footsteps could be heard descending the stairs, followed by the sound of the front door opening and closing. A second set of feet scurried down the corridor to their bedroom. It opened revealing Dawn, still grinning.

“I love you guys!” the youngster pealed, she waved once and was gone.

“Okay, pleasant surprise,” Willow observed after a moment. “Dawn’s fine with you being a vampire. Did we just not hear the bit where she said ‘Hey, Buffy, guess what I just found out about Tara?’”

“She didn’t tell her,” Tara said quietly. “She covered for us.”

“I guess she still likes keeping secrets. Big ones, too,” the redhead sighed. “Just when I,” she added, embracing Tara and commencing a series of gentle kisses down her lover’s cheek and neck, “was – getting used – to having – this one big – big – secret – all to myself.”

Tara moaned quietly and returned the embrace, bending her head to apply her lips to Willow’s. “You are so cruel,” the vampire whispered, “working me into a state two minutes before you have to leave for work.”

“You can hold that thought until I get back home this evening,” Willow suggested slyly.

“Be still my heart!” Tara declaimed. “Oh wait, it is.”

“Tease.”

“You started it.”

“And I’ll finish it – later – promise,” Willow concluded, with a final languorous kiss.

However, it was Dawn who came home first that afternoon. Tara was upstairs in her bedroom practicing when the front door opened. She set the guitar down and went downstairs to greet the young scholar.

Dawn, eyes closed, hugged the vampire tightly. She pulled back and surveyed Tara at arm’s length. “Wow,” she breathed, “I was so happy at school today, I nearly got kicked out of two classes. A teacher even threatened to drug test me.”

“I take it you didn’t try to explain your good mood,” Tara said. “No men in long white coats waiting to take you away?”

“Nah, who would understand?”

“I’m not sure that I do, either,” Tara hesitated.

“Because,” Dawn tried to explain, “It’s going to work out okay, right? You and Willow are back together the way you should be. Willow’s going to get better with you around. Why not be happy?”

“Because I’m a vampire.”

“Sure, okay, but you haven’t bitten anyone, right?”

“Not quite. I’ve been tempted.”

“But you haven’t, see? How come you’re a vampire, anyway?” Tara recounted the story, from suddenly waking in her coffin, to the horror in the crypt. Dawn shuddered when Tara was done. “So you were alive?” Tara nodded grimly. “How did that happen? Coming back to life?”

The vampire shook her head. “I don’t really know. Something strange happened to Willow at the moment it happened; she thinks she made a wish.”

“And you don’t?”

“I’m skeptical.”

“But…you have a soul, right? That’s why you haven’t hurt anyone.”

“A soul? And what would that feel like? You have a soul, Dawn, how does that feel?”

“I dunno, I’m human, I must have one.”

“But you don’t know what it feels like. If you lost it, how would you tell?”

“You’re confusing me,” Dawn whined.

“I’m just making a point. As it happens, as a vampire I can sense the souls of others. I can sense yours, so don’t worry. But when I try to look inside myself, I see nothing.”

“Has it got anything to do with the…”

“Dawn! Not a word about that! To anyone, ever. Not unless I say so, do you understand?” Tara looked intensely at the young girl, who backed away half a pace.

“All right, all right, god,” Dawn surrendered. “But if you don’t have a soul, why haven’t you bitten Willow? Or me? Or Buffy?”

“I still love Willow. And you, you imp, and Buffy, and Goddess help me, Xander and Anya. Isn’t that enough?”

“I guess. But don’t you think,” Dawn persisted, “that if you don’t have a soul, Willow won’t stay with you?” Tara didn’t answer. The anxious expression that flooded her face said it all.

It's such a good point that I really hadn't stopped to think. Willow's Tara's soul, it seems like their love is enough to light up Tara's soul but is that enough? And I hear Tara's fear, that's so scary for her to think that maybe there isn't anything good inside of her that Willow can love.

steph - Happy Dawn, yes. Most definitely preferring : -->>: - :tara to :tara -bot. But Dawn has this special thing for Tara, hasn't she? Always has.

Xita - Aha, doubt and angst in the middle of sort-of happiness. The way it should be in Sunnydale. "I look inside myself and I see nothing" - Tara's biggest fear is now out in the open.

LeatherQueen - Very observant of you. This is now the second mention of Dawn and Tara having some secret business between them. When? Where? What? No information, sorry. I am so cruel, aren't I?

Will - I note from your bio that you're a student. I assume then that you are well aware that students who appear to be happy in class are to be treated with extreme suspicion? Thanks for your kind words about this story.

snuggle79 - Thanks everso. Oh, I'm glad someone liked the "be still my heart" line. People with long memories will note that it's from late Season 3, when Anya is starting her pursuit of Xander. The line as originally used in the show was quite cruel, because it was Xander saying essentially: "Anya, I have no feelings for you." In this new context, with :tara saying the line, I think it's funnier, because now - it's literally true. And Tara is such a big tease.

eccentrictulip - Thank you. Yes, Dawn has her sweet moments in this story - she has a nice one coming up in Episode 8 that I think you'll like.

Mmm, anxious :tara There will be angst and some pain, but :willow :love :tara is a guaranteed outcome.

Oh, wow, B. Nice, but anxious update.

Dawnie knows!! I liked how she didn't tell, Buffy. I think she respects both Willow and Tara enough, to not do that. I'm concerned though, along with everyone else, what will happen when the rest of the Scoobies find out.

The soul thing, hmm... I don't know what to think. I wonder what Willow WOULD do if she found out Tara didn't have a soul, but than the question would be, why is Tara acting the way she is? I know we have our theories, but.... AHHHHH!! Too many questions. :( I'm going crazy here.

I'm looking forward to the next update, but not all the angst. I'm trying to relax though, cause you said everything will be fine in the end, I just don't want to see anything bad happen. :cry

Thanks for the update. Can't wait for more,

Jen

Jen - Did you slow your avatar down or is my connection running poorly today - ultra slo-mo W/T kissage, it's hypnotic I tell you!

Now, see! Everyone knew this was coming; last update, all the feedback was: "oh, they're gonna find out soon, when when, tell us." And of course, in a structure mirroring SR, Dawn finds out first and is really happy about it.

Angst and "Mission Statement" go hand in hand I'm afraid. Next Episode "Out of the Shadow" will mark mid-season for this story. If I'm allowed to preview it, it's kind of a Sweeps episode.

Um... it's working fine for me. :( I don't know. Maybe there is just alot of people online where you are, slowing it down?? Hee... ultra slo W/T kissage. And you're complaining? ;) I'm jk. I don't know why it's doing that.

Well... I was glad someone finally found out and I'm glad it was Dawn. Her reaction was kinda as I expected, but I was still nervous. The only one I'm REALLY worried about, is Buffy and you know why. But, I liked how you handled it. The old mirror trick. :) OH... I forgot to mention before. Dawn and Tara's secret. I'm really wanting to find out what it is. I'm waiting patiently, but it's making me very curious.

Oh, I know angst is going to be a part of it. It just makes my tummy rumble, whenever something happens, you know? :cry And kind of a sweeps epi, huh? Can't wait to see what happens.

Thank you, B. You don't mind me calling you that, do you?

Take care,

Jen

Jen - The old mirror trick with yucky squirty toothpaste everywhere - ewwww. But yeah, Rebecca Lowell rumbled Angel that way (in "Eternity"), so okay, I'm doing a variation on a old theme. But there are only so many ways to find a vampire out - give them homemade pesto sauce to eat (yum!), burn them with a cross or holy water, put them in direct sun (that's kind of drastic), beat them up like Buffy does. Have I left any out? I liked the idea of it happening just during a mundane everyday activity - could have happened anytime prior. Though, you may ask, what was :willow 's robe doing left in the bathroom? Images of nekkid willow running down the corridor? :drool No, she wrapped a big bath sheet around herself after her shower, she just - left her robe behind, and kind :tara went to fetch it for her.

Hmm, Buffy, Buffy - we haven't seen too much of her yet have we? There's more of her next episode. And Dawn/Tara's secret - patience will be rewarded eventually.

Ep. 6 I'll start posting tomorrow.

And Re - B., well I sometimes sign my posts thus, so I can't complain, can I?

So someone finally knows, I'm glad it was Dawn, it makes the most sense really as does her reaction. I like how she figured it out as well. You are rather cruel about this secret of theirs, taunting us like that. I know you'll let us know eventually, but it's still hard to wait.

Thanatopsis - Sorry, no more taunting from me.

Contritely,

B, you are such a tease. :p You tease, you!

I know; there's only so many ways to prove that someone is a vamp, but I just loved the way it happened. Like you said, an everyday activity, led to the revealing. And yes, Dawn spitting toothpaste was ewwww... but that was hillarious. :lol

No, we haven't seen much of Buffy yet. Can't wait to see more of her.

You little naughty vixen... putting images of a naked Willow running in the hallway... :thud It's all your fault. But you know what?? I'm not complaining. Hee... :drool

Thank you, girl (Right?) Sorry, I just don't want to guess wrong. ;)
