Civilzation II has outlasted two PC's and a laptop here. I love it and strangely find the interface alot better than even other Sid Meier games of a similar ilk.

Also it was good for dead time in chat because it ran in a real window, you know the ones that you can actually control and switch in and out of without crashing the PC. At least until I started writing again.

Also... Rattler Race. We started playing it at University and none of my friends has stopped yet. There was actually a guy at university with a creaky old PC that was great for playing it on. The game ran slower so you had more time to react. Not surprisingly the record scores were on that PC

This is a great thread - I find myself strangely fascinated by the games people play.

Hello kittens!
I'm a newbie, so this is my first post on the kitten board :party

I've recently become addicted to an online game called i-sketch which you can find at www.bored.com, along with loads of other distracting things.
Its a type of online pictionary, where you take turns to draw a word, and the other players try and guess the word as fast as they can. Sounds simple, but its really good fun!

I also love scrabble, but i cant stand monopoly! it seems to take hours to finish a game, and I just get bored quickly

Oh games, I used to love them. (Still do actually, I just don't have the time) I played tons of games as a child. Monopoly being my favourite, but I could rarely get parents/friends to join me as it takes so long and I usually won anyway. I was a regular little Scrooge. I also love jiggsaw puzzles, the bigger the better, I still have them and I bought a 6000 pieces one a few years ago, but I have to find room on the floor where my cats can't get at so it remains in the box for now. I've also been playing chess since I was 3 years old, but that isn't just a game, it's a sport. :eyebrow

As for computer games, I love the simple puzzle type of games, card games, and I love fantasy/mystery/problem solving kind of games like Zork or Lands of Lore. I like games in which you look at the world from your own perspective so you don't see yourself walking around.

The WT question has been answered most satisfactorily in the first post already so I'll skip that. :p

Welcome, Blackwidow2! Sounds like a fun game.

Warduke, The Inward Sea, DrG - chess is a lot of fun, but I don't get a chance to play much lately. Also, my wife, Jennifer (the computer programmer), dislikes chess because I beat her.

The Inward Sea, I find Go very difficult. The few people I play regularly wax my ass. Do you know of any good online resources?

bowieinberlin, bar trivia is a real hoot. We used to play every week, until our favourite bar dropped the game (NTN Trivia).

The Smee, the link between violence and gaming is tenuous, but still regularly argued by people looking for an easy scapegoat. Heck, I remember back in the 70's when people said Dungeons and Dragons was dangerous. Anyone remember that horrid cautionary movie Mazes and Monsters?

For myself, the game I play most by far is Warhammer 40,000. It's a sci-fi miniatures wargame, with an interesting, gothic background. I spend a lot of time on the painting and converting of the figures (toy soldiers and model vehicles) that are used as the pieces for the game. I've played in tournaments from Saskatchewan to Wisconsin, and recently ran one here in Winnipeg. Also, my friends and I run participation games in local stores, sometimes sponsoring big charity games, donating to our local food bank.

My current favourite boardgame is The Settlers of Catan. It won Game of the Year in both Germany and the United States. It's a settlement and trade game played both by wargamers and people who never play wargames - including Jennifer!

[b:2e7f78f339]The Settlers of Catan[/b:2e7f78f339] is incredible. If you like [b:2e7f78f339]Civilization[/b:2e7f78f339], you'll probably like it though there's no fighting which is something I like about it. I learned to play it in Germany, which explains why I remember terms like ritter and siedlung instead of useful everyday words in German.

I love Triv, never really liked chess or scrabble much though. My dad was really competative about them. He'd sit & think of a move for about 5 mins, then I'd take about 10 seconds to make mine. He thought I wasn't taking it seriously, & I always lost.

I love role-playing games on the Playstation. Grandia is a really old game where 'Feena' comes from. Mum bought me PS2 for Christmas/birthday, & I bought GTA - Vice City but I'm useless at it. My driving skills are not impressive, unless you count knocking over lamp-posts, mowing down pedestrians, & rolling cars & exploding them impressive :lol

The Final Fantasy games are great. Even though I 've got this brand new PS2 with up-to-the-minute technology & graphics, I'm actually playing Final Fantasy VI on it. It came out in 1994, so the graphics are a bit more basic, but I'm really enjoying it. I love Alundra too but I'm stuck on that so it's on the back-burner for a while.

Kathy, you got me stuck on those popcap games for weeks the last time you posted it. This time I decided not to click it. :)

I love to play games, pretty much any kind it doesn't really matter to me. I used to play a lot of yahoo games mostly pinochle, dominoes, gin, or go fish. :)

I love to play Trivial Pursuit, it's so much fun looking really stupid in front of a lot of people. :p

Card games are excellent, like poker and gin and a game of war that lasts forever. Oh, and board games! Monopoly, Life, Sorry, Chess, Scrabble and Candyland. And there's this game called Catch Phrase that is a lot of fun to play with a big group of people.

Gosh, I do love games, except sometimes I get a little too competitive. :punch

Edited to add: Sally's fun and exciting "critical thinking" game. Okay out of Whitney, Celine, and Fran Drescher. :hmm
I would say Whitney for my roommate, Celine for my lover (what? I love her!), and Fran has to go off the cliff (who could live with her voice?).

Postby kukalaka » Sun Jan 19, 2003 2:36 pm

Oh my, don't get me started:

The first two computer games I got for our first PC had and still have me hooked: Civilization (every version there is ;) ) and X-Wing. I still dig out the latter about once a year and get some mission done I just couldn't figure out how to do when I last tried.

GTA, whenever I feel nasty :devil

I used to play lots of Adventures: Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle (that one was really weird, in a very good way), The Riddle of Master Lu, Sam & Max, Loom, Baphomet's Curse, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Simon the Sorcerer and I'm pretty sure that list is not complete ;)

RPGs: The complete Baldur's Gate saga, Icewind Dale, DSA (it's German), hours and hours of Morrowind...

Minesweeper

Commandos or Desperados if I'm feeling very patient.

And believe me, I could go on :blush

Games that actually involve other people:

I absolutely love the Settlers of Catan, not a lot of rules, but lots of strategic possibilities. I just got an historic expansion for this for my birthday and absolutely need to find someone to play it with.

Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit, but entertainment really is hard. (Um, I'm supposed to know the drummer of a band I've never ever heard of before :hmm )

Pen & Paper RPG

And I'll just stop now :shy

Edited to add:

DMW: I learned a good part of my English by playing computer games and reading Star Trek novels, so my vocabulary was a little strange, too. Just how often do you use "hostile vessel", "phase converter", "tachyon beam", "chain mail" and all the monster names I know in typical small talk :\

Oooh.....

I love games.
Currently, I'm addicted to Animal Crossing, which is a gamecube game. You're a weirdly shaped human, and the rest of the townies are animals. Your goal is a pretty house with lots of furniture, and you do errands for the animals (delivering clothing, picking up forgotten items, getting them fish, making them snowmen) to get money and items. Fun, right?
I also love: The Sims (I got unleashed!), Civilization III, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4, and Grand Theft Auto III.
Online, I personally love Text Twist and Word Racer.

When my dad first got a computer when I was 10 (13 years ago), he used to buy fun adventure games that we would play seperately until we had both won it, and then we'd get a new one. Some of the games we played were Loom, Monkey Island (and the sequel...s?), Maniac Mansion, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis, Deja Vu and Deja Vu II, Leisure Suit Larry (yes, my father let a 10,11,12... year old play that game) and sequels ... I can't even remember all the games we played. We also had Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, various Carmen Sandiago games, Mavis Beacon teaches typing -- which helped me on my way to being able to type almost 70 wpm.

Recent faves have been Sim anything (SimHotel is a fun, underrated one, but of course, The Sims rocks), warcraft II ... minesweeper and solitaire are always fun.

For non computer games, I'm a big fan of trivial pursuit (playing it in italy is fun because pursuit is pronounced "pur-soo-eeet), balderdash, scrabble ...

games are fun :)

Well, its not the weekend anymore but I wish it was cause its cold and a holiday which means work for me will be very busy.

I love to play Backgammon but I can't find anyone who knows how to play anymore. I'm going to teach my daughter how to play but I have a feeling she'll hate it.

My son got a hand held video football game for Christmas and I had the same game when I was a teenager. I'm still pretty good at it and once again becoming addicted to it. That could be bad for my son.

Love to All,

Well, as previously established, I am an old-school geek. Yup, computers, Star Trek and D&D for me.

Course I enjoy playing the new Buffy RPG, and of course Willow and Tara are together, alive and well in it. I also enjoy the WitchCraft RPG by the same company.

For the past few hours I have been playing the new demo for BloodRayne. This is a very cool FPS, and the "star" is kinda-like vamp Willow.

Hope everyone's weekend was good!

I tried playing the games at Yahoo but it wouldn't work, so I tried the games at Yahoo Canada (Kathy suggested I try that) and it worked.

I tried playing Literati but no one wanted to play, so Kathy came over to Yahoo games Canada and she played with me...well actually she didn't play with me, she handed me my ass after beating the hell outa me :punch

But it was fun and I'll be playing it again for sure.

Just a note to everyone, epecially the computer-adventure-game fans and especially Myst fans -

The new Myst game is coming out later this year! It's using a whole new concept, in that instead of having one confined set of environments on CD-ROM, you play it online, using a broadband connection (so you will need one to play!).

It's to be called Uru: Online Ages Beyond Myst. You can read more here, including how to be a pre-release tester!

I have an unhealthy addiction to Popcap and Yahoo games.
The silliest one yet is called Insaniquarium. It's very very stupid, but somehow I couldn't stop playing.
Literati is a lot of fun, and Graffiti is really a lot of fun!

Games that Willow and Tara would play? Well yeah, Strip Chess does come to mind. :grin
And Tara does enjoy a good thumb-wrestle.

Championship Manager since the very first one came out, Red Alert2 and the very wonderful Freecell.

The best games are often the old, free ones. What happened to the playability and repeat value of the old games? There are very few games nowadays that have that IMHO.

Where are the truly massive "free form" games like the old Elite. Not everything has to have cutscenes which limit you to a plot.

*sigh*

Chewster - I've got Elite running on my PC! During a fit of nostalgia for my Spectrum 48K, I downloaded an emulator, and a lot of the old games are available for free on the internet. So I've been replaying all my old favourites, Elite, Paperboy, Jet Set Willy.....
Although I am wondering how I became hooked on Elite. I'm finding it just a tad boring now(and rather difficult)
