It's in-between-holidays Monday 12/30/02, MKF

Postby Kalita » Mon Dec 30, 2002 10:15 am

So, Xmas is over but New Year's is upon us. A very bizarre period of time; here I am at work with basically nothing to do, because half the company is on vacation.

Anyone else feel a bizarre limbo at the moment? Or are you on vacation, and don't care in the slightest?

Please somebody post, as I'm utterly bored and need some entertainment. :punch

i'm sitting at work too, really really sleepy from watching movies late last night instead of going to bed early like i wanted to. i work at the circulation desk at my divinity school library, and we have shortened hours today and tomorrow, because most people are still on vacation, and there's basically nothing going on. so I'm sitting here falling asleep instead :yawn

i wish i were on vacation, but i have a billion papers and finals to do in the next few weeks! i feel the stress building up waiting to attack me at the most inappropriate moment. but then i'll have a whole week before classes start again!

Well, I 'm at worked too amd I'm bored so I thought I would pass the time looking up ratings on the net..Did you know that Spongebob on cable has more viewers than Firefly did? I bet it cost a lot less, too.. Then I looked up what the ratings were for American Idol when it aired over the summer..Let's just say that it kicked some ass..And now it's going to be on opposite Buffy starting in January.. That gave me a big happy :bounce ... Now AI2 will probably pull viewers from all of the shows on in that timeslot, but when your in last place and already leaking viewers, it adds up quickly..And it couldn't happen to a nicer or more deserving guy than Joss....:smash

I should be working.

I just can't get the motivation going. And damnit I am on my 3rd or 4th Code Red Mt. Dew, if I am not motivated now I never will be!

I did wash my car today. I was surprised to learn I had a green car. I thought it was dirty salt colored myself, blend in better with the Chicago winters.

Here is hoping that 2003 is much better to the Kittens than 2002 was.

I got my head x rayed today. Not in a serious way, just in a dentist-wisdom teeth way, but still, it was quite exciting.

I get to see the pictures tomorrow, and I'm hoping it'll show up whether I have a brain or not. Cos I'm not completely convinced.

I have to work three or so hours today, but my schedule is sort of spread-out. So, in between clients, I've been surfing the 'net, working out, and indulging in my guiltiest pleasure: watching James Bond movies. Too bad I'm not motivated to clean up my office, or to change the oil in my car, or to do any of the many other chores I've been putting off.

I have the next two days off, though. Maybe I'll channel Martha Stewart tomorrow, and actually get something done around the house.

Okay, I've never posted my own tread before so here we go.

I need a little advice on a situation that has come up. I was offered a job partnership in which I would own my own pizza place. I'm only 22 years old, I've been working at my other job(which is the same pizza place I would be owning just a diff. location) for like seven years and I really need to get out. I know the inside of the business front and back, side to side. I just don't fully know the business-business part, like the legal stuff, yet. I'd love to own one of my own, I just don't know what I should do.

I could agree and own one, then save up the $ that I make and then move out of my parents place,...or.... work at the shitty little pizza place that my jerko boss owns, then save up money to move out and then look for my own restaurant....

Part of me just wants to go in on the partnership. What do you all think?

Running any kind of business is a big step and a tough decision to make, it can be the worst job in the world...and the best (and often a bit of both!). Without knowing too much about the situation, I can only provide a few thoughts, but hopefully they will be of some use.

Am I correct in am assuming this is a franchise-based operation? This at least would make things a little simpler, as it means you can transfer a lot of the skills from your current place, and probably that some of the basic legal, health and safety etc aspects are already covered.

The most important thing to consider when getting into a partnership is the other person - it has to be someone you totally trust, since they will have the capability to compeletly screw you, and vice versa. The next is probably to understand exactly what is expected of you - will there will any financial investment required, how are you liable if the business were to fold (always take into account the worst case - purely as a way of managing your risk), what happens when things go wrong? And bear in mind that if you do go ahead with this, then it will be hard, you'll probably find yourself putting in lots of unpaid overtime, long hours and having to deal with things like lawyers and tax. Making sure this is all clear up front is crucial!

But if your heart is in it, and you really think this is going to suceed then I would also say "go for it!". Theres no point in looking back and going "what if?"...running your own business can be hugely fulfilling, and once you get started you soon realise it would be impossible to do anything else!

Sparky, I second Silver's advice about being sure that you can trust your potential partner. And I'm not just talking about integrity. You have to be able to count on your partner having the motivation, judgment, attention to detail, and marketing skills to help run the business, along with the restaurant skills. If you decide to proceed, it goes without saying that you need to consult a lawyer in order to put a partnership agreement in writing. You're also going to need a tax professional (CPA or EA) to help you file the necessary tax documents.

You might consider taking some classes in business administraton, marketing, and business taxation. Your local community college should offer these courses, and many such courses are available online, so that your work schedule doesn't have to prevent you from learning the basics.

I went shopping today to bolster the economy :grin Anyway I found a magazine called Sirens that had a really nice Amber interview in it. Has this already been posted? It's pretty long and would take me ages to do a transcript but I could scan it if no-one has done it yet.

That interview doesn't sound familiar to me, Puff. Maybe it's a new one. :)

This morning I wrote up chapter titles for my book and sent them off to my publisher. It took longer than I expected - titles aren't exactly my forte. :blush Now I've got to tackle a bigger issue - the title of the book itself. I've called it Hoosier Girl almost from the moment I thought of writing it, but my publisher has correctly pointed out that it's kind of a confusing name. Most people don't know the word "Hoosier" outside its basketball context, and anyway the story takes place in Maryland, not Indiana. So I'm going to come up with some ideas and the publisher's team will do the same. We'll see if we can do any better.

Meanwhile, Pasadena is gearing up for the Rose Parade on Wednesday. The streets are already filling up with Winnebagos. :eek The Rose Bowl is kind of a weird matchup this year - because of the Bowl Championship Series thingy, we're getting Oklahoma instead of the Big Ten champion. I don't think Oklahoma has ever been in the Rose Bowl before - I wonder what all the Sooners will think of the parade.

Enjoy the rest of your day, everybody! :bounce

Has anyone else seen the preview for Darkness Falls yet? I just saw it and there was a quick flash of a familiar looking female. I checked the credits at the end and of course it was EC. Then I was like duh I heard about this awhile ago I just didnt know it was gonna be in this wide of a release. So I say good luck EC.

Hello Kittens-

Well, my Monday was nicer than I could have hoped. I didn't get called into work, went to LTR The Two Towers and didn't explode (three hours and previews, is it too much to ask for an intermission?) and I get my lady all day tomorrow too. Great Monday!

I echo the drinking and driving thing. See them at work, very icky. I wouldn't want to go missing any Kittens!

So if you :party and get :smash remember-DON'T DRIVE!

Thanks all,

Jixer

Ah yes. I will be absent for a couple of days as I'm venturing into the seedy underground world of "The Fancy Dress Party". Not only that, but I will be conducting an experiment to see how much I can drink before I fall over. Or start a fight. Or both, perhaps.

I'm kind of excited about this New Year, because it heralds much goodness for me. Last year? Big pile of poo. Next year? Bloody wonderful. Tits an' all. :)

It's amazing what gayboys can do with a bottle of Archers and some vodka though; it really is.

As for drinking and driving; um, I think I'll be more dangerous walking under the influence. Heh.

Yes, I worked on Monday and Im working New Years Eve and I have to come in and work a few hours on New Years Day too. Since I have to be at work by 7:00, I dont think Ill be staying out too late on Tuesday. Why do states have to make new tax changes effective on New Years Day? Couldnt they give everybody a break and wait until the 2nd to make it effective?

The good news is that I should be able to make it home in time to see most of the Michigan-Florida football game. Go Blue! The other good thing is that my boss approved my request to take vacation days on Thursday and Friday, so Ill be flying to Atlanta to see a friend and Ill be able to spend a nice, long weekend with her. I think thats a pretty good way to start off the New Year.
