Its New Car Tuesday, MKF! 10/29/02

Postby Triscuit7 » Mon Oct 28, 2002 6:53 pm

Hey Kittens! First time daily thread to celebrate the first new new car Darcy and/or I have ever owned. After over four months of waiting, we just accepted delivery of a 2003 Pontiac Vibe (and doesnt that sound like a lesbian car?). Yippee! We placed the order in mid-June, but it got kicked back while we were honeymooning in July because our color choice was discontinued and it had to be re-ordered.

Youre all thinking, They waited 4 months for a car? Are they nuts? It was actually quite a bit longer. We started seriously looking to replace our 1986 Chevy Nova hatchback several years ago. We figured, 200,000 miles how much longer can it last? (The answer turned out to be 16 years and 341,219 miles.) Nothing we looked at was quite right until we found the Vibe.

It is soooo cute! See www.pontiac.com/pontiacjsp/vibe/main.jsp

Now the big question is to do vanity plates or not. It was a definite with the original color, a weird green: APHID. But for the dark red one now sitting in our driveway, vanity plates remain a topic of discussion (3 to 7 characters). Possibilities include: FRGFEAR, CHATHO, FNFICHO, QNOFFMN, ENTROPY, WT4EVER, WILWHND (thanks Scott), and SASYEGS (thanks Xita). Feel free to offer votes or additional choices.

But the main question for the thread: What kind of car would Willow and/or Tara own (make/model/color)? Would they spring for the vanity plates, and if so, what would they say? Just off the top of our heads, we recall fics where they rebuilt an old VW minibus, owned an old VW bug, a Jeep, and some SUV or other.

Oh cute car. You guys are lucky that you can go for full vanity plates. Over here in the UK you can't do that. You can have personalised or 'cherished' plates but the closest you can get it to your name initials or something. My other half and I just had our plates fitted last week K6 MGK. K6 as my gf is KG and my initials are MGK so that worked out quite well. These were relatlively cheap - just under 400. I know of a family whos second name is REA and the whole family has REA at the end of their 'registration' and it costs them over 10,000 per plate! Now that is just silly!

Really cute car you have there and I like the deep red colour more than the sound of the green. Did you know that green cars are unlucky and that there are more accidents in green cars than any other colour. Just another of those odd stats that come from the Insurance Companies every year. ;)

We are thinking of changing our car soon too. The one we have looks quite similar to yours but not as sporty. I think that if I get a good paying job then we will go back to our favourite old CRV. (our dream car would be a Lexus RX300).
So hopefully by the new year we will have a new set of wheels and the rest of the car that goes with it ;)

Wishing you many hours of happy and safe motoring :)

Ohh forgot to add my sixpence worth on the choice of car for W/T.

Funny before I got to the end of your original post I could see them in a bug, the old kind tho'. (I've not read any fic yet either) so as that choice has gone already how about an old Mini. I'm sure the Giles Brit influence would rub off on them here and they would go for a Mini and do some 'customising' of their own.

Nice car matey. There's something about the smell of upholstery that's all new and shiny.

As for what your vanity plates should be ...um... let me think..

I think W/T would buy some sort of SUV (so they can go on lots of wilderness/back to nature trips) with a bumper sticker that says "Wicca's do it without a Wand".

Hey Girls,
Congrats on the new car. *Barb throws all lose change from her pocket into the back seat for luck* I'm an SUV kinda girl myself. I drive a GMC Jimmy that when I bought it a two years ago, I talked the guy down in price because the color is really bad. My friends say it looks like a Giant Wintergreen TicTac. But I love it. I used to drive a pick up truck that I had vanity plates that said "2SHORT". I couldn't transfer the plates over to the Jimmy because NJ motor vehicles it's a big hassel. Something about a very expensive fee for transferring plates from a truck to a car. Even though the tire cover on my Jimmy says "GMC Trucks" its considered a car. I tell you when it comes to driving, NJ is the worst state.
Good luck with it and wear your seat belts.

Love to All,
Barb

the Vibe is a really cute car! I want a BMW Z-3. But poor grad students can't afford those. My brother is a film major and I've gotten a promise from him that after he makes his first million, he'll buy me a BMW. After he makes a few more million, then he'll buy me a jaguar. :) I think my first real car might be VW or a Volvo.

I think Willow and Tara would get a cute little VW Jetta - not a bad car for college students.

Cute car, Triscuit..I like WILWHND and SASYEGS...;)

Earlier this year we got a black Ford Focus with the help of my gf's mom...it's pretty cool, me likes it..we were hoping to personalize our plates KTNLXS (Katy and Alexis) ..we'll see..

well, for Tara and Willow, I can see them in VW Bug or a Honda Civic HB, perhaps....I'd say it would be Willow to consider the plates: BRSTGAL, DONSPLS/DONASPL or even BLSDBE...

oneyedchicklet, I agree on the driving in jersey bit...I live in Husdon County...pothole city..and let's not forget the guys who see that you drive 'really' well so they gotta show off and prove they can cut you off with their cars, with ground kits, while driving on potholes ... :spin

Could it be the power of the Kittens at work here, see how the ratings have dropped.....

From TV Guide Online
www.tvguide.com/newsgossi...025a.asp):

Buh-Bye, Buffy?
Friday, October 25, 2002

Buffy the Vampire Slayer's creator is about to drive a stake through the hearts of the show's diehard fans: According to Joss Whedon, the Chosen One and her trusty gang of Scoobies will likely call it a doomsday in May. "I'm beginning to suspect that it may be [Buffy's] last season," he tells TV Guide Online. "Nothing's official, but it's starting to feel
possible. The way people are talking, there's a finality to it."

Might the folks with whom Whedon's been conferring work at A.C. Nielsen?
Compared to this time last year, Buffy's ratings are off an alarming 16 percent. In fact, last week more viewers watched Buffy's bloody brilliant spinoff Angel than the mother show itself. "It had a really good seven-year run and it's time to call it quits," implores Mediaweek columnist Marc Berman. "Leave with some dignity."

For his part, Whedon insists his gut instinct is not numbers-driven. "I never check Buffy's ratings," he says. "It doesn't really affect me. It may affect the network." Responds a UPN spokeswoman: "Buffy is an extremely important franchise to UPN. There are a lot of options, whether it be bringing the show back, bringing it back in a different form, possibly doing a spinoff... But really, it's just way too soon to say what's going to happen. We just started our conversations with the
producers and the studio." (The rep also points out that ratings for last season's Buffy premiere were inflated because of the show's much-hyped move from the WB to UPN, thus a year-to-year comparison is unfair.)

Another factor that may be influencing Whedon's vibe: Sarah Michelle Gellar's contract expires in May, and the Scooby-Doo star has thus far expressed ambivalence about slaying on. "Everything is one day at a time," she told TV Guide Online last May. "That [decision] is about everyone sitting down and [evaluating whether] there's story to tell and
if I think it'll be, you know... interesting." Fast forwarding to
present day, Whedon says Gellar remains undecided. "She hasn't told me one way or another, but I know she has movies she wants to do. She has been doing [Buffy] for seven years, so if she did decide that this was her last year, it's certainly a decision I'd respect."

Whether or not Whedon's vampire saga bites the dust, the workaholic says this season's plots will not be impacted. "It doesn't really make a difference to me creatively, because I build every season to be self-contained," he explains. "I do think where we're heading this year is kind of monumental. It's going to be a big finish in May, so that if it is the last season, that's great. And if it's not, if Buffy continues or some incarnation of Buffy continues, it will serve that as well.
There's always more stories to tell."

In other words, it's probably no small coincidence that Eliza Dushku will reprise her role as Buffy's Slayer nemesis at season's end.
Speculation has it that should Gellar opt to hang up her stakes in May, Dushku may be recruited to headline a spinoff. "That possibility exists," confirms Whedon, adding cryptically, "It's one of many."

Unfortunately I have never had the pleasure of a new car. My two cars have been ten year old pieces of s***. Ah well, one day I'll finish school and have an actual job where I make decent money.

As for Willow and Tara, I don't really associate any particular kind of car with them. I imagine Willow might like some kind of sports car. Willow's vanity plate: IBABBLE.

Congrats on the new car, Triscuit:)

I think that Willow, being a worrier, would buy a car touted for its safety, like a Volvo. I can't figure out Tara's auto choice as easily. Would she go for a four-wheel drive, so that she and Willow could go off together into the wilderness? Or just a cute little Bug for basic commuting? Or a sports car so that she can get in touch with her take-charge side?

I drive my cars into the ground, in part because I choose them carefully, then get even more attached to them over time. They're comfortable, like a favorite pair of shoes. My Mustang GT convertible has 169,000 miles on it, and my Saturn SC2 has 191,000 miles. If I mend my hot rod ways, perhaps I can get 300,000 out of each of them.:wink

eta: Kittens, please drive carefully. Yesterday, I was driving on the 22 freeway, and a car in the next lane spun out. The driver lost control, somehow missed hitting anyone else, and crashed head-on into the sound wall.

Congrats on the new ride! What a cute car! I hope you guys enjoy it for a long time! :)

As for Willow and Tara I can totally see them driving an old bug too. It would go along with their total cuteness, and plus, good milage, easy on the air. :) I myself, am in love with Jetta's and ford Focus'.

And can I just say a big woo hoo for the article. Poor Jossy-poo. The knob. Could he really expect anything else?

Barb, I own a GMC Jimmy too! Aren't they excellent? (Except for the whole gas-guzzling thing.) I've had mine for, let's see, just over 4 years and have never had any problems with it. And I drive a lot, too, lots of long road trips, so I've racked up tons of miles on the odometer. Mine isn't a Wintergreen TicTac, though (how cute!), it's navy. I've nicknamed it "Big Blue." Yeah, I know, stunningly original. My previous car was a 1988 (maybe?) gray Pontiac Grand Am, appropriately nicknamed Silver Bullet.

Everyone in my family (well, everyone who can drive) has a vanity plate. My parents each have their own first initial, followed by a space and then our 5-letter family name. I always though that was kinda weird ... I mean, I don't want random people on the road knowing my name! My plate says "SMYLI", due to my obsession with smiley faces. :) :grin ;) :p

geeze, once I start talking about myself I just can't stop! Hmmm, Willow and Tara. I personally think they would drive an environmentally-friendly car, Tara especially. I just can't see them in a big honkin' SUV. VW bugs, as other people have mentioned, are a possibility. For some reason, I can totally see them in a Neon - it's a cute car.

I like your vanity plate ideas, Triscuit! Here are some more (also in answer to the question of what Will & Tara would get):

WILOHND (like the one you mentioned, but with an O instead of a W), WICNLUV, TINKRBL, FAMILY, FLAMN O, FLOTN O, EVLZGUD, WLOTREE, YESMAAM. Is that enough? :lol

Very nice car, Triscuit. Excellent choice :)

I always had old bangers until a year ago when I bought a car that was practically new. Just a baby, really :)

And sitting here thinking about cars, I realise that I haven't yet given it a name, as I did with all my others.

Hmm. As it is a V-reg, I think it will have to be Velma. It's particularly apt, as my friend's son always points to Velma when the Scooby Doo cartoon's on TV and says: "What's Emma doin'?"

Mad as a beagle, that boy.

As for the number plate, I'd go for FRGFEAR :)

Hi chino, have a look at the text you wanted to post. Is there a
  </!/-/-
or a
  -/-/>

(without any /) in it? That's a HTML comment, delete it before you post. If you need an arrow, use -> instead of -/-/>. I have to insert all these / because without them this post would also get the "HTML Comments are not allowed" error message.

HTH

ETA: It doesn't have to look like a HTML comment. The program that checks the posting (for EzCodes for instance) skips spaces. So, if you have something like
 -Hello Kittens-[space][space][space]-> read this!

in your text, you will get the error message. It's a badly written parser (if a good parser detects a html comment, it only has to use html entities instead of < or > and everything is fine), but I guess we have to live with it. ;)

I'll need to pay more attention in future. Keep two eyes on the posts and shut my ears from the two barking pups in the next room :) Sorry folks.
