Re: Balance Point

Postby Cindy Lou Who » Mon May 19, 2003 1:47 pm

Great updates!

This Grey Lord guy is a little too Joss-like for my tastes.:D With all the "Killing Tara might be the thing that pushes Willow over the edge like it did before" thing.

In order for Marcus to receive his much-deserved comeuppance it seems like the Grey Lord will have to be persuaded not to reinstate the original timeline. And that he dismisses Michael's report of Marcus' machinations speaks volumes. I wondered if the Grey One would even care what Marcus did as long as it was in service to the "True" timeline? Not sure...but please say Marcus gets his due!:pray Maybe the "book" will be his undoing. You know what they say about absolute power...:hmm

The Lords existed *before* virtually everything? No wonder they are so big-picture wise and small-screen naive simultaneously.:) Marcus got there first and told a convincing story that paints Michael as a traitor. And Michael was in charge of ensuring the Balance Point be dealt with. It's passing might give Marcus' story more credence.

A place where nothing is random? Wow. The mind boggles.

I really liked the W/T interaction. And sweet Willow is NOT a monster!:cry She might have a singular chance to have walked one road and then make another choice. Tara has less information and more wisdom than everybody put together. *sigh*

I miss Saul already. I don't want to mourn Michael as well...:( What a cliffer.

Balance Point

Grimmy: Marcus really isn’t bothered about taking Warren’s place, he’s arrogant enough to believe he can deal with Willow. I know what you mean about megalomaniacs, they do have a tendency to escape detection until its too late :)

The order beings are extremely powerful, but also very naïve as they have no understanding at all of how humans think. The main reason it believes Marcus over Mike is because Marcus is acting in the interests of order (or so he claims) while Mike is working against them. The idea that Marcus told it what it wanted to hear is completely over its head.

While Willow does feel guilty about killing Warren, I think it’s the least of her issues. She’s more concerned with the fact that she tried to kill her friends and destroy the world. When Willow first drained the books in “Villains” she acted in a rational manner, saving Buffy first and then going after Warren. I don’t think anyone was too bothered by Warren’s death, only the effect it had on Willow. She then becomes less rational, her actions having less and less to do with avenging Tara. Although at first she wants to kill Jonathon and Andrew herself, she later completely abandons that goal, wanting only to fight Buffy and Giles. Willow’s fear is not that she’d use dark magic or kill someone if the stakes were high enough (eg to save Tara) but that she would then lose control, becoming a danger to everyone else, including Tara.

Cindy Lou Who: I hadn’t planned to make the Lords of Order a Joss metaphor, but it does kinda work :) The lord’s attitude that right and wrong aren’t the important thing, that if Tara has to die to restore the timeline then so be it, made me think of :joss comments about not giving the audience what they want but what they need and other such :puke

You’re right about the Lord, if Marcus could convince it that the murders he’s committed were in the service of order, it wouldn’t care.

Yep, if Willow makes it through this she’ll have the biggest incentive ever to not abuse magic again, although I think she already has enough reason. Hopefully it won’t affect the way the others see her. And yes, one of the morals of this story is that TARA IS GREAT!

Warren rolled over, unable to sleep. Three months he’d spent in this damn cell, and the coming years stretched ahead, seemingly endless. He’d tried to explain that he’d been naïve, drawn in to Jonathon and Andrew’s scheme without truly realising what they planned, but his pleas had fallen on deaf ears.

A blaze of light lit up the cell, then faded back to darkness. “What the hell?” Warren yelled, jumping out of bed. The flash of light had ruined his night vision, and he stared blindly ahead of him.

“Is there a light switch in here?” a voice asked.

“No, the guards control the lights” Warren replied. He reached down and grabbed his boots, thinking to swing them at the intruder’s head.

“No matter” the voice said, and a glow illuminated the room.

“Ok, lights, very nice” Warren said. “Now who the hell are you? And how did you get in here?”

“I represent someone who has taken an interest in you” Marcus said.

“Is that so?” Warren said, backing away.

“My master feels that you should not have ended up here after your attempt to kill the Slayer” Marcus told him.

“No argument here” Warren replied. “That damn bitch and her little friends. When I get out of here…” Memories he’d relived a thousand times ran through his mind again: Buffy defeating him at the funfair, Tara slapping him. “So what, does your master want an alliance?” he asked. “I can see you’ve already got the magic down, but I can give you all sorts of technology. You get me out of here and the world’ll be ours for the taking.”

“Not quite what I had in mind” Marcus said, sending a bolt of energy burning in to Warren’s chest.

The self-proclaimed super-villain fell to the floor, clutching his chest. “What…why?” he asked.

Marcus ignored the question. “My master would want me to make this painless” he said. “And I could. But where’s the fun in that?” He fired another bolt of energy, and another, and another.

                ********************

Tara turned as there was a knock on the door. “Come in” she called.

“Hey” Buffy said, moving in to the room. She looked at the two witches clinging tightly to each other. “How are you guys doing?”

Tara tried to smile. “We’ll be ok” she said. Willow turned in her arms to face Buffy, but said nothing.

Willow, my best friend, who’s capable of destroying the world she thought. It would take time to deal with what she’d seen Willow do, time they didn’t have. “Guys, we’ve got a problem. The Order’s master turned up, some kind of creature made of order, or the idea of order, or something. Its gonna try to put things back the way they were.”

“We have to stop it!” Willow said, jumping up.

“We can’t reason with it” Buffy said. “It doesn’t care that this timeline’s better. And we can’t kill it.”

Willow stared straight at her. Her expression was beyond the resolve face, and her tone wasn’t expressing an opinion, it was stating the way things would be. “We have to stop it.”

                ********************

Mike watched helplessly as the Lord gathered its power. It stood with its arms outstretched in front of it, its palms facing each other. Between them a ball of energy swirled and grew. Soon it would be powerful enough to punch a hole in to the past and block the effects of Dawn’s spell.

“This is wrong” Mike protested. “The timeline was changed to save lives. If you change it back, you’ll be committing murder.”

“Right and wrong are just ideas, they are unimportant” the Lord intoned. “There is only order and chaos. Order must be preserved at all costs. You once agreed with this, why has this changed?”

“I’ve realised its not true” Mike said. “Right and wrong are all that matters. They may just be ideas, but we have to live by them. We have to do what we believe is right.”

“But different humans believe that different things are right. To live this way is chaotic, your philosophy is flawed.”

“Maybe” Mike admitted. He had known from the start that he couldn’t convince the Lord, the creature was order, it could never agree with anything even remotely chaotic. He hadn’t been speaking for its benefit, but for the other Order members. Whether they were beginning to agree with him, or he just caught them unaware he didn’t know, but when he pulled his arms free the warriors flanking him reacted slowly. He pulled the handgun from one warrior’s holster and levelled it at the Lord.

“Why do you act this way?” the Lord asked, confused. “You know I cannot be harmed”

“Well, the thing is, no one’s ever tried, have they” Mike said. The warriors had drawn their weapons, but none approached him. “So maybe the whole thing about you being indestructible is just propaganda.” He fired.

The first bullet hit the magic sphere and was vaporised by the energy. The second hit the Lord between its expressionless eyes and bounced off. The lord didn’t even flinch. The remaining bullets hung in mid air, then disappeared as their component molecules flew apart.

The Lord kept the energy sphere in place with one hand and pointed the other at Mike. There was a flash of light and the former leader became motionless, frozen where he stood. “It is not propaganda.”

                ********************

“There’s nothing more you can tell us?” Buffy asked, exasperated.

“I’m sorry” Nadia said.

Buffy turned to face Omi. “Could you get in to its mind, make it not want to do this?”

Omi almost laughed at the suggestion, but the hopelessness of their situation made her sombre again. “It doesn’t have a mind, not in the way you mean anyway.”

Xander slammed the book he was reading shut. “Nothing in here. There was only a paragraph about these things, it all agreed with what Nadia said. Can’t be killed or harmed in any way.”

“They’re only weakness is they can’t leave the circle of order that’s created when they’re summoned” Dawn added, closing her book. “But they don’t need to, they can cast their spell from anywhere.”

“C’mon, we need something” Buffy complained. The atmosphere of hopelessness in the room was becoming unbearable, and her mood wasn’t improved by the fact that all her Slayer power was useless. “We can’t just sit here until this reality ceases to exist.”

“We’ll have problems before that” Anya said darkly. As they all turned to face her she gestured across the hallway to the other room where Willow and Tara sat around the computer.

“Will’s not gonna go back on the dark magic” Buffy said. “She saw what we saw. She knows what would happen, she doesn’t want that.”

“Really?” Anya scoffed. “When we tell her we haven’t got a clue what to do, do you really think she won’t attack the Lord with everything she’s got?” She shook her head. “At least we know we stopped her in the other timeline.”

“Enough” Buffy said quietly. She was having a hard enough time dealing with what she’d seen Willow do, she didn’t need Anya voicing her fears. “Focus on the problem.” She sat down next to Dawn and grabbed a book off the pile. “So, we can’t hurt the Lord, but what about its circle? If it can only exist in the circle, and we destroy that…”

“The Lord would be sent back to its dimension” Nadia finished. “When the Lords contact us, they return to their dimension first, then the wizards collapse the circle. I don’t know if you could destroy the circle with the Lord still in it.”

Anya suddenly turned to face her. “The circle is an area of perfect order, right?” she asked, her voice urgent. “So the one thing that will definitely collapse it is chaos.”

“What do you mean?” Buffy asked.

“Chaotic magic, we cast it on the circle, everything goes crazy and the Lord will be forced out of this dimension” the demon told her. “I need a book from the Magic Box.”

“This one has stuff about chaos” Dawn said, handing her the book. “Right after the section on order.”

“This is the book I wanted” Anya said as she skimmed the passage. “What’s this book doing here?” She looked around at the piles of books.” These are all mine!” she said.

“Um, we kept borrowing the same ones to do research” Buffy explained. “I guess last time we, uh, forgot to take them back.” She smiled hopefully.

                ********************

“I’m running out of search engines to use” Willow said as another search came up with nothing. “If only the Order had a database I could hack in to, but they’re bigger technophobes than the Watchers.” She typed another address, her fingers moving over the keyboard faster than Tara could follow. “All we need is one weakness, one spell you can cast on it.”

Willow’s choice of pronoun wasn’t lost on her girlfriend. “We can cast on it” she said.

Willow turned away from the computer screen. “Tara…” she began.

“Willow, we’ve been though all of this before” Tara pointed out. “You can’t give up magic completely, in the end it would do you more harm than dark magic.”

“That was before I killed Warren” Willow said.

“You didn’t kill Warren!” Tara argued. “He’s alive, in prison where he belongs. None of that stuff happened.”

“But it would have” Willow said. “I can’t be trusted with magic, especially in a situation like this.”

“When we’re in danger?” Tara asked. “Sweetie, we’re always in danger.”

“When you are in danger” Willow said grimly. “I’d never use magic like I did at Rack’s, and I’ll never hurt you again, I promise. But to not use dark magic if it’s the only way to save you? I can’t promise that. And if the magic’s too strong, I could lose myself, go crazy and hurt everyone, hurt you…”

“Willow.” Tara cut off her lover’s panic stricken words. She took both her hands. “You are stronger than that, I know you are. You beat dark magic once, and I know you’ll never let it beat you again.”

Willow finally looked Tara in the eye. “I wish I could believe you.”

********************

Rack looked up as Marcus materialised right in front of him. “What the hell?” he demanded, getting to his feet. He immediately noticed the change in the wizard, the power emanating from him. “You got a new supplier?” He asked.

“Something like that” Marcus told him, smirking.

“And what, you came here to tell me you don’t need me anymore, and our deal’s off?” Rack asked. He still had Marcus’ essence, he used it to taste the power within in him. “What is that?” he asked, disgusted. “Not dark, not light, no flavour at all.”

“True, it doesn’t have the same kick your magic does” Marcus admitted. “But its enough, for now.”

“For now?” the dealer asked, intrigued. “And then what?”

“Speaking of our deal” Marcus said. “Tell me, how do you plan to get Willow back? You know she doesn’t touch dark magic now.”

Rack grinned and chuckled. “That girl was born to be dark” he said. “The power in her, I’ve never felt anything like it. She’s just kidding herself with this ‘recovering addict’ act, one good hit and she’ll be mine again.”

“If she’s as powerful as you say what’s to stop her killing you?” Marcus asked.

“I still have her essence” the warlock replied. “Most people’s fade after a week or so, I have to take the tour again. But hers burns as bright as the day I met her. She can’t use magic against me, same as you. Anything she did cast would just make me more powerful.” He dropped back on to the couch again. “I assume by your curiosity that you want to make a more permanent deal. A partnership, you me and strawberry?”

“I was thinking of a permanent situation” Marcus said. “And I’ve seen just how powerful Willow could be.”

“You’ve seen her?” Rack asked, interested. “How? She can’t be back on the dark, I’d have felt it.”

“She even managed to kill you” Marcus continued.

“Impossible” Rack said. He realised Marcus had used the past tense. “What are you talking about? That neutral magic’s warped your mind.”

“I’ll admit, I could really use some dark right now” Marcus said, moving forward. He grabbed the dealer by the shirt. “Just because I need to kill you doesn’t mean all that magic should go to waste.” He pushed his fist against Rack’s chest and sucked the magic out of him.

Marcus laugher mixed with Rack’s scream as he felt the power surging through him. The dealer having his essence did prevent him from casting against Rack, but it didn’t stop him absorbing his power, in fact it made it easier. He’d have to thank Willow for the tip before he killed her.

Releasing the dealer’s drained body, Marcus dropped on to the couch next to the corpse. He still had three people to kill, but he had some time to enjoy the high of the dark magic. He decided to leave the Englishman till last, he couldn’t wait to suck the magic out of Willow and Tara. From what he’d seen of the balance point, she had even more power than Rack. And, he suddenly realised, he had a new advantage. He not only had Rack’s power, but the essences he’d recently tasted too. Most were nothing special, but one burned brighter than the rest. And tasted of strawberries.

                ********************

“Guys, we’ve found something” Buffy called from the living room. Willow quickly shut down the computer, then followed Tara over to the others.

Anya waved the book she held at them. “We were thinking, if we can’t hurt this Lord, we can attack the order-zone-thingy it has to stay in. Destroy that…”

“And the Lord can’t stay in our dimension” Willow finished, getting the picture. “So how do we attack the zone?”

“The zone is pure order” Anya said, handing the book to Tara who began reading. “So all we need is…”

“Chaos” Tara breathed as she finished reading the passage. “Is this the only thing you’ve come up with?” she asked, hoping they had another option. She passed the book to Willow, who scanned the passage, then looked up, horrified.

“What’s wrong” Xander asked. “Anya made it sound like this is the answer to all our problems.” He glared suspiciously at the demon.

“Oh my god, is it dark magic?” Dawn asked. She looked worriedly at Willow and Tara, then also stared accusingly at Anya.

“No!” the demon protested. “C’mon, I’m not that insensitive.”

“Its not technically dark” Tara agreed, though she still looked worried. Willow’s expression was growing more horrified the more she read.

“What’s wrong?” Buffy asked, anxious. She thought of what Anya said about Willow finding her own solution if they couldn’t.

“This…” Willow started. “You remember Ethan Rayne?”

The others all nodded. “Kinda hard to forget” Xander said.

“This” Willow went on, waving the book. “Is the kind of thing he’d do. It creates a zone of total chaos, breaks down all the natural laws.”

“Destroying the zone of order…” Anya began.

“And everything else!” Willow yelled. “No one could survive the chaos for more than a few seconds. Plus the zone will keep expanding.”

“So we cast it, wait till Lord boy is banished, then stop the spell” Xander said.

“Its not that simple” Tara told them. “Its chaos, its very nature is to be uncontrollable. Ending the spell will be the hardest part.”

“And if you hadn’t noticed, control isn’t one of my strong points” Willow said bitterly.

“Tara, can you cast the spell?” Buffy asked.

She shook her head. “Not on my own.”

“I could help” Dawn offered.

“No!” the scoobs all said together. The teen frowned and slumped back in her chair.

“Anya, could you do it?” Buffy asked. “I mean, you’ve got powers.”

“The wish isn’t like normal magic” Anya said, shaking her head. “I could cast the spell, but like Tara said, that’s the easy part.” She turned to face Willow. “It has to be you.”

Willow looked nervously around the room. “You’re not scared I’ll mess it up?” The others all shook their heads, in some cases a little too quickly.

“No, I’m scared of you going all black eyed scary mojo on us, but I don’t think you’re incompetent” Anya told her.

“Um, thanks, I think” Willow muttered. She turned to Tara and felt her confidence increase as her lover took her hand.

“We’ll do it” Tara whispered in her girlfriend’s ear. Willow nodded. “Together we can do anything.”

Given the current history in this timeline Willow hardly has reason to think she might get out of control. She'll do anything to stop Tara from being killed of course, no reason (or desire) to think what might happen if Tara *does* get killed. That's simply not an option.

Quote:
“No, I’m scared of you going all black eyed scary mojo on us, but I don’t think you’re incompetent” Anya told her.

True, true... Willow has the power to start that spell, she just has no experience with that amount of control. I think that takes years to get, like Saul for example.

Another quote I found it interesting:
Quote:
Buffy turned to face Omi. "Could you get in to its mind, make it not want to do this?"
It made me think 'wrong mind' immediatly. Can't Omi get in Marcus' mind and at least sense what he's up to ??. Regardless of all the magic Marcus now posseses, if he's hit without prior warning he should be easily defeated. Any 2x4 will do.

Rack was killed way to easily. For starters, taking someones magic is magic in itself and as such it shouldn't have worked on Rack. Assuming he was speaking the truth about the essence-stuff. Secondly, I sincerely doubt a warlock/dealer with his experience would let someone obviously powerfull so close to him. He simply wouldn't have survived this long if he had. The good thing about Rack dying is that Willow's essence is now free again, one thing less to worry about.

Magic is after all a matter of emotional control (I keep rewatching the _Doppelgangerland_), I can forgive Willow for losing that under certain circumstances. Odd thing is that she sees herself as already having lost that control when no evidence is there to support such a claim. Stop thinking about other timelines, stick with this one and react to events as they happen here and now.

Grimmy: You're right about Marcus, he shouldn't be too hard to defeat if he's caught by suprise. The only problem is catching him off guard...

Rack is (was) powerful, but his downfall was his overconfidence, and his greed for Willow's power. He was too busy making plans to get her back to realise what Marcus intended to do.

Willow acts like she's already lost control because she's just gained memories of her doing just that. You're right about what she has to do, stop thinking about what might have been and concentrate on the here and now.

“You think you can just do that to me? You think I'd let you get away with that?” Warren laughed hysterically. “Think again.” He raised a gun and fired.

The last bullet smashed through the first floor window, hitting Tara in the heart and killing her instantly.

                ********************

The warriors stood about, completely at a loss. Their leader had been branded a traitor and was now paralysed. They had no idea where the wizards, the scholars or their own chief warrior were. Now they watched as the Lord of order summoned its power.

The energy sphere was now almost a metre in diameter, hovering in front of the lord. It lowered its hands, and the sphere remained where it was. “All is prepared” the creature intoned.

The warehouse doors burst open. Buffy ran in, followed by Nadia and Xander, all carrying swords. “You’re not gonna do this” Buffy said.

“You are the Slayer” the lord stated. “Why do you oppose me?”

“Y’know, I’m really not gonna argue with you” the Slayer said. “And I don’t wanna hear any of this ‘order is all the matters’ shit either.”

As Buffy faced off with the Lord, Willow and Tara hurried in to the corner. Crouching down, they opened the book and began chanting. Each took a handful of herbs from their pocket and crushed them together in their hands.

“And I don’t think you’re one for comic banter” Buffy said, hoping to distract it from the two witches. “So lets get straight to the hacking and slashing.” Raising her sword, she charged the creature.

                ********************

“You think you can just do that to me? You think I'd let you get away with that?” Warren laughed hysterically. “Think again.” He raised a gun and fired.

Invisible to non magic eyes, the air ripped open under a barrage of energy from the future. An invisible barrier formed over Willow and Tara’s bedroom window, seconds before a bullet slammed in to it. As the flattened bullet dropped to the ground the barrier faded and the portal resealed itself.

                ********************

The Lord sent a bolt of energy racing toward Buffy, she ducked and rolled to avoid it.

The warriors reached for their weapons, but stopped when they saw Nadia charging the Lord. Frozen with indecision, they simply watched.

“Let the natural order fall to dust” Willow and Tara chanted together. They joined hands and clenched their other fists, grinding the herbs together.

The Lord fired another bolt, this time striking Xander in the chest. He instantly froze, completely unmoving.

“Xander!” Buffy called. Ducking under another bolt, she ran to him. She shook him hard but he didn’t respond.

Willow gritted her teeth, then squeezed her fist together so hard her nails bit in to her palms and drew blood. She saw the pain flash in Tara’s eyes as she did the same.

Nadia raised her sword to strike and ran for the circle. A bolt hit, freezing her in mid-movement with her sword still raised.

“Let chaos come” the witches said together. Opening their fists, they pushed their hands together, mixing the herbs and blood.

The Lord finally noticed the two women in the corner and seemed to realise they posed the real threat. It raised its hand to fire a bolt at them, only for Buffy to charge straight for it. It changed its aim and froze her on the very edge of the circle.

The mixture between the witches’ hands caught fire. Although she could feel the heat, Willow felt no pain, and the magical flames didn’t seem to be doing any damage. She looked nervously at Tara, then nodded. Tara pulled her hand back, leaving Willow in possession of the flame.

The Lord again pointed towards Willow and Tara. Anya materialised behind it, then swung her sword straight in to its neck. The blade shattered. “Crap” the demon muttered as the Lord turned to face her. It froze her before she could teleport away.

Willow stood, one hand holding Tara’s, the other holding the chaos fire. She could feel Tara’s energy flowing in to her, calming her, giving her the strength to do this. Together they ran across the warehouse, ducking as the Lord fired and missed.

“Hey ugly, over here!” a voice yelled.

Willow turned to see Dawn and Omi run in, obviously planning to distract the Lord. “Get back!” she yelled at them, but it was too late. Two energy bolts flew across the room and paralysed them.

She kept running, they were nearly at the circle. Suddenly she felt Tara’s hand pull away. She turned to see her girlfriend standing motionless, frozen by the Lord’s energy bolts. “Tara!” she screamed. The sudden loss of her lover’s energy felt like she’d been punched, the sight of Tara standing there, unable to move made it a hundred times worse. Willow felt the anger rising, her control slipping away. As if feeding on her rage the chaos fire grew brighter, its flames writhing around her hand.

The Lord faced her, an energy bolt already forming around its hand. It raised its other hand and placed it against the floating energy sphere. The sphere imploded, collapsing in on itself, forming a hole hanging in the air. The Lord sent a stream of magic flowing in to the portal.

                ********************

“You think you can just do that to me? You think I'd let you get away with that?” Warren laughed hysterically. “Think again.” He raised a gun and fired.

Invisible to non magic eyes, the air ripped open under a barrage of energy from the future. An invisible barrier formed over Willow and Tara’s bedroom window.

A second portal opened. The neutral energy of the Lords of Order poured out of it, burning in to the barrier in an attempt to overwhelm it and tear it down.

Warren fired wildly as he ran, the last bullet heading straight for the first floor window.

                ********************

Willow stood alone, facing the Lord of Order, her friends standing like statues around her. She prayed they were only paralysed. If they’re dead, if Tara’s dead… she pushed the thought from her mind.

The order warriors finally seemed to recover from their shock and advanced to wards her. She held up the hand that had until seconds ago held Tara’s and with a wave of power pushed them against the wall.

The Lord threw its energy bolt, in the same instant Willow dived to the floor, hurling the chaos fire as she did. The energy bolt passed over her head, then she hit the ground. Looking up, she saw the chaos fire expanding as it moved. It stopped in mid-air at the edge of the circle, but kept growing. As it passed over the boundary the air seemed to scream as order and chaos fought.

The ball of fire expanded, swallowing the time portal. Lightning crackled as the forces within the circle tried to hold it back, but the chaos kept on spreading. With a final ear-splitting noise, the zone of order collapsed. Suddenly exposed to a universe it could not exist in, the Lord simply faded away.

The chaos fire kept expanding. It was now several metres across, and only inches away from Anya who had been closest to the Lord when she was frozen. Reaching out, Willow closed her eyes and told the fire to STOP!

The sphere’s expansion slowed, but it was still getting bigger. Willow knew a human who went inside wouldn’t survive more than a few seconds, she didn’t know what would happen to a demon and she didn’t want to.

Concentrating, she forced the sphere back. Slowly it stopped moving, then began to contract. Hearing a groan, she turned to see Buffy released for her paralysis. She looked around at the others, they were slowly waking up, but seemed slow and sluggish. “Anya, get away from it!” she yelled. The demon looked around, disorientated. Then, seeing the chaos fire she came to her senses and hurried around it to join the others.

The sphere was slowly getting smaller, but was still more than a metre in diameter. Willow could feel it, it wasn’t alive but still it wanted to grow, spread out until it engulfed the universe. Gathering all her strength she forced it back.

She felt the change moments before the fire began to burn much more brightly. The pressure of the forces within were immense and threatened to burst outward. She could feel her grip on the sphere slipping. “Tara!” she called, turning to see her lover shaking away the stiffness in her joints. “I need you!”

Her mind was still half asleep, but Tara’s body responded and she was already running toward Willow when her brain processed what was going on. She reached out her hand.

Willow reached out her hand, Tara would hold it in seconds but she knew it would be too late. The flames were white hot now as the chaos fire prepared to erupt out and swallow everything, the pressure within becoming greater and greater.

Pressure Willow realised. Of course the sphere was becoming unstable, she had let it grow, then tried to push the increased energy back to the same small size, pushing the chaos in on itself. With a flick of her wrist she set the sphere fly straight up, through the roof, and expanded it. The chaotic energy spread out to fill the skys over Sunnydale. “Everyone out!” she cried. She felt Tara’s hand take her own even as she turned and headed for the door, pulling her girlfriend with her.

The area of ceiling that had been within the chaos zone had changed. Some parts had melted, others aged a thousand years, others had disappeared completely. Its structure weakened, the ceiling caved in.

As the others piled out of the warehouse, Willow pointed up. “Look!” The chaos fire was huge now, several hundred feet up, but as it grew it also became fainter. Soon it was miles in diameter and almost too faint to see. Then it was gone.

“Where did it go?” Buffy asked.

“I expanded it faster than the chaos energy could grow” Willow said, a little proudly. “Same energy spread over a larger area, it became less potent.”

“Its all gone?” Tara asked.

“More or less” Willow said. “Its spread out so thin it’ll barely have an effect.”

“Uh, Will” Xander said, looking up. “I think its barely having an effect.” They all looked up to see the pre-dawn glow blocked by massive black clouds that had appeared from nowhere.

“Well, maybe a slight effect” Willow conceded as lightning flashed and torrential rain began lashing down. They all ran for the shelter of the Order’s vans.

                ********************

The van pulled up outside the Summer’s house. “Ready?” Buffy asked the others inside. The scoobies, Mike and Omi nodded. Nadia had stayed with the other warriors and was attempting to explain what had happened. “Go!” the Slayer yelled, pulling open the side door and letting in the driving rain. Willow and Tara leapt out first, ran to the door, unlocked it and dashed inside. Waiting until the door was open, Dawn and Omi now jumped out and ran for the house, closely followed by Anya and Xander. Buffy climbed out and slammed the door shut before following.

Willow and Tara hurried upstairs, eager to change their already soaked clothes. They grinned as they heard Dawn and Omi shrieking as they ran for the house.

Dawn reached the door first, her long legs carrying her ahead of the others. As she reached the threshold a figure stepped out of the living room. Marcus raised a hand and a storm of energy, bright enough to rival the lightening above, blasted out, throwing Dawn out of the house and knocking the scoobs to the ground. With a grim smile he closed the door.

Ok, I've been reading this for a while, but I actually have no idea why I never replied before. Heh, maybe I'm just dumb. :grin

I'm loving the whole story. When I think of this fic, I can only think of this word: Great! :clap

Well that didn't go too badly :) . I'm not entirely sure the chaos spell was entirely needed even, seeing as how the Lord creature failed to break the protection spell on that window. But it was nice to have Willow realise she can control magic if she pays sufficient attention. Smart solution to the chaos leftover as well.

So Marcus slammed the door in Dawn's face...ooowww... how hard can it be to get in through a window ? For that matter, Anya can teleport in at any time she likes. I am wondering what (if anything) happened to the Order Magic Marcus' got from the Lord, since said Lord is no longer on this plain being scared away by chaos and all. Does Marcus still have all that power ? Even if he does his arrogance should ensure his failure anyway.

Additional problem is that Marcus likely realises that doesn't have much of future left. He has nothing left to fight for, only a poor sense of revenge (he should take revenge on himself if at anyone).

A minor bolt of Chaos would be nice to deal with Marcus, though it's a nuisance to control the resulting chaos afterwards. It would be a nice thing to see no doubt, Marcus' body detoriating into chaos, oh yeah...

I guess I just don't like people like Marcus who think the world owes them some great debt or something. He is sooooo damned full of himself, bwah.

The picture (so to speak) that I'll remember for a long time from this story is Willow lifting the sand when they were trying to kill that huge cockroach-thingie. Made me so proud of her :-)

Do Order Lords carry grudges by the way ? I know it can no longer 'repair' the current timeline but what happens if for whatever reason one of the Order summons the lord for an unrelated reason ? Will it still be pissed off ?

Can't say that I don't like at least part of the Lord's directive to Marcus - kill Warren and Rack.:D I'm not necessarily proud of it but I'Yam what I'Yam. But I *DO NOT* like that Marcus rec'd part of Willow's "strawberry" essence in the process. ICK!:angry

Tara and science = perfect stabilizers to Willow's magic!:clap

You write yet another cliff hanger so nicely. Tummy rumblings.:eek

You. Fucking. Rock.

Oh my God...what an incredible cliff hanger of a finish you are putting me on hold for. :thud

I'm jumpy...I'm pensive...I'm excited...I CAN'T WAIT!!

I've been with ya since the beginning and can't wait to see the end...I've come to appreciate the characters you've established with the Order...I like how you changed the bad universe...with all the decent things that did happen in the old one....someone tortures Warren to death...kills Rack...which in my opinion were the high points of the final 3 eps....the acts themselves, not the perpetrator. Only Scooby that I would have let do it would have been Anya....but you are even BETTER. You let the BIG BAD kill the little bads. I love it. Genius! :bow

So what more can I say?

Finale.

Bring It On.

Oh, and maybe a little Epilogue lovin for our favorite witchy duo? :pray

Just catching up and it was exciting getting all those chapters all at once. LOved the way willow's BRAIN was the hero. It's nice to see Willow think through a problem, thank you for respecting Willow enough. I can't wait to see Marcus' fate. grr

I've lately had the time to catch up on this story, and I'm really glad I did. The already great story line, thanks to the original premise, was made even more intriguing with the revelation about the cause of the balance point.

Wonderful stuff. Thanks so much.

The End!

Postby chronic » Fri Jun 27, 2003 9:55 am

Grimmy: Well, the Lord would have got through the spell on the window if Willow hadn’t stopped him :) Oh, getting in the house is going to prove very difficult…

I don’t think Marcus senses his end is near, he’s so arrogant he thinks everything is going his way.

Well, the Order Lord’s don’t have emotions, so they wouldn’t want revenge. However, since Willow’s beaten one of them they may well decide that she and Tara are a threat that needs to be dealt with…

That bit in the desert with Willow levitating the sand was my favourite bit too :)

Cindy Lou Who: Yep, Marcus really is a bastard. Initially I didn’t intend to make him so hateable but it just seemed to come naturally, to make him, like Warren, a character with no redeeming qualities at all.

Jessan15: Oh my God! Um, your fic Lost and Found was the first one I read on the kitten board, and the one that made me want to write fan fic, so praise from you is, um, so great :bow [mumbles embarrassedly]:blush

Ahem, anyway…

I thought so little of the last season 6 episodes that I thought they deserved nothing less than being erased from the universe, but I didn’t like the fact that it would save Warren and Rack…

Bring it on

Here it is…

Xita:

Loved the way Willow’s BRAIN was the hero.

In the last few seasons of BtVS the writers seem to have forgotten the fact that Willow is a genius, even though it was a major part of her character in the earlier ones. As for them not respecting her anymore, I think that’s a given :rage

Mollyig: Glad you’re enjoying it, hope you enjoy the finale…

Unaware of what was going on downstairs, Willow and Tara hurried in to their room. “I’m soaked!” Willow complained, pulling wet material off her skin.

“I know sweetie” Tara said, going to the closet and taking out a towel. She tossed it to Willow, then took another and began drying her hair. She looked down and frowned. “I hope this top isn’t ruined, Dawn only gave me it this morning – well, yesterday.”

Willow rubbed the towel over her head, leaving her hair frizzy and sticking out at odd angles. “I’m sure it’ll be ok” she said. She shook her head, it was hard to believe that a few hours ago they had been celebrating Tara’s birthday, it felt like days ago. She crossed the room and embraced her lover, they both shivered slightly as wet clothes pressed against their skin.

“I think we’d better get out of these” Tara said, pulling away but still keeping her arms around Willow.

The redhead grinned, taking the bottom of Tara’s shirt and pulling her close. “I think you’re right.”

                ********************

Buffy staggered to her feet. “Dawn!” she cried as she saw her sister lying still on the ground. Hurrying over to her, she listened for breathing and checked for a pulse. She gave a sigh of relief when she felt both.

She looked round quickly when she heard footsteps, to see Xander running for the front door. Mere inches away from the house he slammed in to an invisible barrier, rebounded and fell to the ground. He got to his feet, one hand to his nose which was streaming with blood, and placed the other hand flat against the invisible wall. “Great” he said.

“See if it goes all the way round!” Buffy called to him, and he nodded, one hand still holding his nose and moved across the garden and round the corner, his hand sliding across the barrier.

Anya came and stood next to Buffy, looking down at Dawn. “Is she ok?” she asked.

“She’s alive” Buffy told her. “Can you get inside the house? Willow and Tara are in there.”

Anya nodded and vanished, only to reappear a second later. She frowned and dematerialised, but again she materialised in the same place. “Damn it” she muttered. “I can’t get through.”

“Buffy!” Mike called. He was kneeling beside Omi, one hand anxiously feeling for a pulse. The two teenagers had taken the brunt of Marcus’ energy bolt, and like Dawn she was still unconscious. “She isn’t breathing!”

                ********************

Tara broke the kiss and moved back so Willow could remove her top. As she did so she briefly opened her eyes – and saw Marcus watching them from the doorway. “Willow!” she yelped, jumping back and pulling her top back down.

Willow spun and saw the wizard who was casually leaning against the doorframe. “What the hell are you…” she started. She stood in front of Tara. “You can’t put things back, we banished your lord thing. Its too late” she told him.

“You defeated a Lord of Order?” Marcus asked. “Impressive.” His voice was relaxed, and he remained leaning, as if he didn’t really care what had happened to the lord. “Still, that’s why he gave me my orders.”

“What orders?” Willow asked. She reached for Tara’s hand, then slowly backed away.

“If he failed, I was to correct as many things as possible” Marcus told them. “By killing those people who should have died.”

In an instant a magical barrier raised up between Marcus and the women. “Just give it up” Willow hissed through her teeth. “You are not gonna hurt Tara, you can’t change things back. Its over.”

Slowly Marcus straightened up and sauntered over to them. He stood a few feet away, and began poking the barrier. “Calm down, I said those were my orders, I didn’t say I was going to carry them out.”

“You expect us to believe you?” Tara said. “You killed Saul, didn’t you.”

“That was a misunderstanding” he replied. He turned to face Willow. “Now, I have something I think you’ll want.”

Willow waited for him to continue, but the wizard remained silent. She was about to ask what when his eyes went black. Gasping, she jumped back. Marcus placed his hand flat against the barrier, and in a flash of light it was gone. A ball of black light formed around his hand, then surged in to Willow’s chest.

Willow screamed, her back arcing as the magic entered her. When she faced the wizard again, her eyes were black.

                ********************

“Stay with Dawn” Buffy ordered Anya. The demon nodded and Buffy ran over to join Mike.

“She got a pulse?” Buffy asked.

Mike shook his head. “You know CPR?” he asked, straightening Omi’s body and kneeling beside her. He placed his hands above her chest to begin compressions. Buffy nodded and checked the girl’s airway, then lowered her face to breathe in to Omi’s mouth.

“The barrier goes all the way round” Xander called as he appeared round the corner of the house. He sniffed and wiped away more blood from his top lip. “And as high as I can reach.” He took in the scene, then hurried over to join Anya. “What’s going on?” he asked.

“A very good question” Dawn muttered as her eyes fluttered open.

                ********************

“Now, isn’t that better?” Marcus asked.

Clutching her stomach, Willow dropped to her knees. “Oh god…” she whispered as she felt the dark energy racing through her. The feel of it revolted her, she knew that once it would have given her a high but now all it did was make her want to throw up.

“Willow!” Tara screamed. She thrust out her hand and a burst of light hit Marcus in the chest, knocking him over. Grabbing Willow’s arm, she pulled her lover to her feet and out of the room.

“I knew I should have killed her first” Marcus muttered as he levitated back up, then followed the fleeing women.

“Buffy! Dawn!” Tara yelled as she passed their doors. Not waiting for an answer, she pulled Willow down the stairs, flung open the door and ran straight in to the barrier. Staring through it she could see the others, grouped around Dawn and Omi who were lying on the ground.

Placing her hand against the barrier, she tried to open a door but it was too strong. “Willow, help me” she said. She turned to face Willow, her lover was leaning against the wall and looked dazed, her eyes still black.

“We can’t cast together, I’ll infect you” Willow said, her voice hopeless and lost.

Tara winced as she accepted the truth of her lover’s words. Looking behind her she saw Marcus floating down the stairs, she grabbed Willow’s arm and ran.

                ********************

Xander put away his cell phone. “Ambulance is on its way, I just hope they won’t want to go in the house.” He glanced nervously at the house and saw a flash of movement from the doorway. “Was that Tara?” he asked.

By the time Anya looked that way the door had closed again. “I don’t know, I didn’t see” she said. “Stay still!” she shouted as Dawn again tried to sit up.

“Guys, let me up, I’m fine” Dawn protested, though her wince of pain told that she was lying. “What’s going on?”

“Come on, get up” Buffy growled under her breath as she counted Mike’s heart compressions. She leaned over and breathed into Omi’s mouth again. An unpleasant memory surfaced; of performing CPR on her mother. There had been nothing she could do then, she was determined not to fail now.

Dawn pulled herself up and joined Xander and Anya in watching Mike and Buffy as they tried to revive Omi. Suddenly a thought struck her. “Anya, I wish that the barrier was down.”

“It doesn’t work like that” Anya said. “I can only grant wishes to those who have been wronged, who want vengeance.”

“Fine, Marcus hurt Omi, he wants to hurt Tara and Willow” the teenager replied. “I wish he would drop down dead.”

“That won’t work either” Anya said. “I wish it would. Damn vengeance rules! He hasn’t wronged you personally, at least not in the eyes of D’Hoffren and the Lower Beings.”

Xander was about to point out that Dawn had tried to kill Marcus, but decided this wasn’t the time. “Guys, it’ll be ok” he said, more to convince himself than the others. “Will and Tara can take care of themselves.” He turned and stared at the house and muttered under his breath “I hope.”

                ********************

Marcus closed the front door then turned towards the living room. Running a hand through his hair, he considered his next move. Willow’s reaction had surprised him, she wasn’t showing any sign of being high, she just seemed out of it. He had hoped that giving her a dose would have her begging him for more, but it seemed Rack had been wrong about her. Still, if he couldn’t make Willow join him, he would simply take her power instead.

Thanks to the Lord’s gullibility, he would emerge from this a hero with a guaranteed promotion, and with Willow’s magic he would soon rise even further.

He glanced at the open doorway to the living room again. The women would attack him as soon as he entered, but with his borrowed and stolen power there was nothing they could do to him. He couldn’t suck Willow’s magic out, that would mean getting near to her, and that would mean she was close to him. She could also take his power, and he’d seen enough during the balance point to know she could be a dangerous enemy.

He smiled grimly as he headed for the kitchen. Of course, with Willow’s essence he didn’t need to do the energy suck, he would simply absorb anything she threw at him. And the balance point had shown him something else, the one thing that would make Willow unleash all the magic she had against him. Kill Tara.

                ********************

Tara dragged Willow into the living room, pushed the couch out across the room and ducked behind it. Whispering the spell, she raised a barrier over the door, though she knew it wouldn’t keep Marcus out for long. She turned to look at her lover who had begun to shiver. Her eyes were still jet black. “Oh god, Will…” she whispered.

Willow twitched. “Its not affecting me” she assured her girlfriend. “I’m not high.” She rubbed at her arms as if the magic was dirt that she could clean off. “I feel polluted, infected. Kinda sick.” She tried to smile, but the nausea and shaking turned it in to a grimace.

“It’ll wear off, You’ll be ok” Tara said, reaching out to stroke her cheek. She peered over the couch. “Where is he, why hasn’t he followed us?”

“That son of a bitch” Willow said, her voice almost a growl. “If he tries to lay a finger on you I swear I’ll rip him…” she stopped herself as Tara turned to stare at her, open-mouthed. “It is having an effect” she said worriedly. “Its making me angry.” In the depths of her black eyes, red flames began to burn. “Really angry.”

They both sensed rather than heard the movement as Marcus came through the wall behind them. Leaping to their feet, the women dived over the couch as the wizard fired two energy bolts at them. The magic hit the couch, blowing two holes right through it.

Rage overwhelming her, Willow stood up and pointed at Marcus, a nimbus of dark energy forming around her hand.

“Willow, no!” Tara cried.

Willow froze, staring at Marcus. He stood there unmoving, he didn’t even raise his hands to defend himself, she could kill him easily. Tara’s voice reminded her where that path lead. And there was something else that made her hesitate, the expression on Marcus’ face. He looked expectant, almost eager.

For a second, Willow’s eyes went back to their normal colour and the power around her hand faded. As she lowered her hand her eyes darkened again. She remained staring at Marcus, and the wizard smirked at her. She spun on her heel, helped Tara to her feet and led her out of the room.

“Willow, what’s going on?” Tara asked, looking behind her nervously as they hurried upstairs.

“He’s toying with us” Willow said, her voice low and angry. “He could have killed us, he doesn’t want us dead, not yet.” She turned to face her lover. “He wants me to turn.”

“Why would he want that?” Tara asked as they returned to their room. “If you… I mean, if the magic took control you’d… he’d be the first one you…”

Willow reached out and took Tara’s hand, letting the blonde know she understood how hard it was to think such things about her. “I don’t know, he must think he can convince me to join him” she suggested.

“Then we know he has one weakness, he’s an idiot” Tara said, smiling a little.

Willow smiled back at her, then turned as Marcus rose up through the floor. “You took your time” she said.

“No need to rush things” the wizard said casually. “How’re you feeling? There’s more where that came form if you want it” he offered.

“Did you really think that would work?” Tara asked, her tone mocking. “You thought that Willow would crack?” She smiled proudly at her lover, then glared angrily at Marcus. “She’s so much stronger than that. So much stronger than you.”

“Spare me” the wizard said, rolling his eyes. “I know you want it” he said to Willow. “C’mon, you know its what you need.”

“I do not need magic!” Willow said defiantly. “All I need” she continued, taking her girlfriend’s hand, “is Tara.”

Marcus vanished in a blaze of light, reappearing a second later behind Tara. He put one arm round her neck, pulling her back, the other hand holding a knife to her throat. “Then you’d better learn to cope without her.”

“NO!” Willow cried, magic swirling around her hands as she instinctively summoned her power to help Tara.

“Come on little girl, you think you can stop me?” Marcus taunted. His eyes darkened to jet-black. “In the other timeline you were unstoppable, in this one you’re nothing. Losing Tara was the best thing that ever happened to you.” Tara winced as the knife bit in to her skin.

“Let her go” Willow commanded, her voice deadly.

“Make me” the wizard said mockingly.

The red flames burned again in Willow’s eyes. Her hair darkened to black and the colour drained from her face as she stopped fighting the dark magic and let it out. She raised her hands, dark energy burning around her clenched fists.

“Willow…” Tara whispered

                ********************

Dawn had finally persuaded the others to let her get up; for one thing lying down meant the rain went straight in her face. Now she, Xander and Anya stood watching as Mike and Buffy desperately tried to revive Omi.

“But I was in front of her” Dawn protested. “More of the energy hit me, how come I’m ok and she’s the one not breathing?”

“Its just luck Dawn” Xander said miserably. “Sometimes bad things just happen.”

Buffy pulled away quickly as Omi jerked.

“And sometimes they don’t” Dawn said happily. “Omi! Is she ok?”

Buffy and Mike rolled Omi on to her side as she began to choke, then managed to get her breathing under control. “I think so” Buffy called as they helped the teen sit up.

“Ambulance is on its way” Xander told them, kneeling down beside Buffy.

“Good” the Slayer replied, nodding. She turned to look at the house. “No luck getting in?” Xander shook his head. Buffy sighed. “Then its all up to Will and Tara.”

                ********************

Marcus stepped back, pulling Tara with him. Even though he knew Willow couldn’t hurt him, that her magic would make him stronger, she was still a terrifying sight.

Willow stared at the man threatening her lover. She would do anything to keep Tara safe, and she knew what she had to do. She released the dark magic inside her, summoning it all up to the surface. A black mist began to form around Willow. It spread out, thinning at the edge of the cloud but still thick enough at the centre to obscure her.

“What the hell..?” Marcus muttered to himself. He’d never heard of a spell like this, had no idea what Willow hoped to achieve.

The cloud began to fade as the mist drifted away from Willow. He could see that it was literally coming out of her skin. As the cloud dissipated completely Willow’s hair and eyes faded back to their normal colour.

“Impossible…” Marcus whispered as Willow forced the last of the dark magic out of her body. He stared in amazement until Tara’s elbow rammed in to his stomach. He doubled up, releasing her and she ran to Willow’s side.

“You pushed it out!” Tara exclaimed. “All gone?” she asked her lover, running her hand through the red-again hair.

“All gone” Willow confirmed with a grin. Joining hands, they turned to face the winded man who was struggling to straighten up. A barrier formed around him.

Pulling himself up, Marcus formed a ball of energy in his hand and slammed it against the barrier. It had no effect, angrily he tried again. The magical wall remained in place. He placed his hands against the barrier and blasted it, but still it held strong. “How?” he asked, his voice almost a whine.

“What should we do with him?” Willow asked.

“Bind his power, then hand him over to the police” Tara said. “Even if they can’t prove he murdered Saul there’s his attack on us.” She winced as her free hand rubbed the small cut on her neck.

Bind my power! Marcus felt the panic rising. He couldn’t understand why the barrier held, the power the Lord had given him and the power he took from Rack should have been more than enough. He looked at the two women holding hands, even casting together they shouldn’t be this powerful. Placing his hands back on the barrier he attacked it with everything he had. The wall around the house collapsed as he withdrew the power maintaining it.

The lovers tightened their grip on each other’s hands. The magic coursed through them, mixing together through the bond they shared. The barrier held.

Screaming with hate, Marcus summoned all the power within him and hurled it at the barrier. He could feel everything being used, his stolen magic, his own power, his very life force, it was just a question of which lasted longer, the barrier or him. Screaming again, he saw a tiny breech open up and, seizing his chance, he teleported.

                ********************

Willow stood looking at the early morning sky. Grey light filtered through the heavy cloud cover, though it had stopped raining as the chaotic magic finally exhausted its energy. She turned as she heard the hospital’s double doors slide open. “Hey” she said, smiling. “How’s Omi doing?”

“Pretty good” Tara said, putting her arms round Willow and her chin on her shoulder. “Some burns from the energy bolt, but nothing permanent from the whole ‘near death’ thing. Dawn’s got a few burns too, we blamed the whole thing on a near miss lightning strike.” Willow nodded, distracted.

Tara could easily guess what was bothering her lover. “You shouldn’t blame yourself, you know.”

“I don’t” Willow said. “Well, a little. I know we did everything we could, and he had all that stolen power, but it doesn’t change the fact that he’s still out there.”

“Nadia and the others found the bodies of the scholars” Tara told her. “They’re gonna tell the police, so at least they’ll be looking for Marcus too. And those other warriors believed us about him, so he’s finished with the Order. Besides, you felt what I did, he used everything to escape, every last bit of magic he had.”

“Yeah, he’ll have some major withdrawal” Willow agreed. “The amount of magic he had, maybe even some physical damage. I mean, I… the other me, ended up brain dead from dark magic overload.”

Tara held out a hand. “Come back inside?” Willow took her hand, smiled and allowed herself to be led back in to the hospital.

“Congratulations Tara!” Anya called out as they entered the waiting area. “You’re truly a part of the scooby birthday tradition.”

“Oh, I think it had its good parts” Tara said, looking at Willow as they sat.

“Yeah Will, you were pretty amazing” Buffy agreed.

Willow blushed. “It wasn’t just me, Tara and I are always stronger when we cast together.”

“You dealt with that chaos magic on your own” Tara pointed out. “And I think Buffy was talking about the dark magic.”

The Slayer nodded. “Yeah, Marcus zapped you full of the thing you were most scared of, and you just pushed it out.”

“I’m still not totally sure how” Willow said. “But when he threatened Tara I knew I had to get rid of it.”

“You beat it” Tara said proudly.

“Marcus escaped” Willow said.

“At the cost of everything” Tara pointed out. “And I meant the dark magic, you beat it.”

They looked up as Mike and Nadia emerged from a side corridor. “How’s Omi?” Dawn asked.

“Pretty much fine” Mike said, smiling. “They want to do some more tests, but they think she’ll be discharged today. You can all come in and see her now.”

“Any ideas what you guys are gonna do now?” Buffy asked as they headed for the ward.

“Well, the other warriors are staying with the Order” Mike said. “They’re meeting with another group, then they’ll be reassigned.”

“Won’t they tell about how you helped us?” Willow asked.

“The Order already knows that” Mike said. “The Lord wasn’t destroyed, only sent back to their home dimension.”

“Aren’t you worried?” Tara asked.

“Well, the Lord’s themselves don’t have emotions, so they don’t understand the whole concept of revenge” he told them. “Some of the other Order members, on the other hand…” he gave a grim smile. “We’ll keep a low profile.” He stopped and gestured at a cubicle. “Here we are.”

Dawn pulled the curtain back and dashed in, the others filed in behind her. As Willow and Tara made to follow, Mike stepped in front of them and said in a low voice “the balance point is over, there’s no way they can change things back now, and the Order won’t come after you for revenge.”

“Good to know” Tara said, relieved.

“But” Mike went on, “the Order considers you all criminals, and you did banish a Lord of Order, that’s never been done before to my knowledge. Its possible they now consider you a threat.”

“They’ll come for us?” Willow asked worriedly, holding on to Tara’s arm.

“I don’t know” Mike said. “They might.” He shrugged. “Be careful.” With that he turned and followed the others in to Omi’s cubicle.

                *******************

“Do you think Omi will be ok?” Willow asked as they walked across the hospital car-park. “I mean, living on the run with two demon hunters, or whatever Mike and Nadia decide to do.”

“I think she’ll be fine” Tara said, grinning at the memory of Omi’s enthusiasm. “You heard what she said, she wants to help people. I think she’s relieved to be out of the Order, all that secrecy and ‘ends justify the means’ stuff.”

“Oh man” Xander said as he opened the car door, looking up at the sky. “I’ve gotta go to work in a few hours.”

“You can sleep at ours for a couple if you like” Buffy offered.

Xander grinned and nodded. “Aren’t you working today too?” he asked.

“Not till evening” Buffy replied, climbing in to the passenger seat. “Plenty of time for my daily four hours.”

“Anya, you wanna crash at ours?” Dawn asked as she, Willow and Tara crammed in to the back.

The demon shook her head. “I’m not tired” she said grouchily. “Demon, remember? Besides, the shop opens in a few hours.” She turned and walked away.

“Bye Anya!” they all called, but the demon shopkeeper ignored them, then teleported in a flash of light.

                ********************

Dawn waved to Buffy, then closed the door and ran upstairs. Knocking on Willow and Tara’s door, she half opened it before remembering her manners and closing it again, then opened it again when Willow called “come in.”

“Sorry” Dawn said sheepishly. “Knock then wait, knock then wait, knock then wait” she repeated under her breath. “Where’s Tara?”

“She went to see Anya” Willow told her. “What’s up?”

“Buffy went to work, and its kinda creepy down stairs with the couch all blown up.”

“I know what you mean” Willow agreed. “Still, the insurance covers it and we’ll get a new one next week sometime.” Her tone grew more serious as Dawn sat down on the bed. “How are you doing?”

Dawn rubbed at the dressing over her shoulder and arm. “Its ok, the burn wasn’t that bad.”

“That’s good” Willow said. “How about up here” she said, pointing at her head. “New memories and everything.”

Dawn frowned. “Um, yeah, some of them are kinda scary” she admitted. “But I know it wasn’t you, not really. I know you’d never hurt me, no matter what happened.” Willow flashed her a grateful smile. “How about yours, they’ve gotta be so much worse. At least mine had a happy ending.”

Willow grinned widely. “You saved Tara” she said. “And me.” Her smile faded a little. “That spell you did…”

“It was pretty cool” Dawn said grinning, not noticing Willow’s change of mood.

“Dawn” Willow said. “I can’t, none of us could tell you that you did the wrong thing, or that we wouldn’t have tried to do the same. But that spell was dangerous, if it hadn’t worked it would have killed you. And it was dark magic.”

“But it did work…” Dawn protested.

“I’m not attacking you” Willow said quickly. “The fact that the spell worked shows you have power, the fact that you found it easy to use dark magic is worrying.” At the horrified look on Dawn’s face she went on. “I’m not saying I think you’d get addicted, just that I think you ought to know something about magic.”

“You’re gonna teach me magic?!” Dawn asked excitedly.

“I’m going to discuss it with Buffy” Willow said. “I want to teach you some of the theory and history of magic, and the meditations I use to resist dark magic. And maybe some spells” she said as Dawn’s face began to fall.

“Oh, wow!” Dawn said excitedly.

“And you’re not going to read the book you used to change things” Willow said sternly. “At least not until Tara and I have.”

“Ok” Dawn said, practically bouncing with excitement. She calmed down a little. “Willow, you never answered my question.”

“Huh?”

“How are you doing, with the memories?” Dawn asked gently.

“Ok, sorta” Willow said. “I keep telling myself that it wasn’t me, that I never did those things, but…”

“Maybe, maybe they’re like mine” Dawn said. “I mean, most of my memories never actually happened, but they’re still mine, still a part of me. These are a part of you. Not a good part, I admit…”

“But Willow Rosenberg did do those things” Willow said miserably. “They are a part of me.”

“But you see, because they’re a part of you, you decide how to use them” Dawn said. “You could let them make you feel guilty, or you could use them as a warning, against a road you can never let yourself go down.”

Willow looked up, smiling. “Buffy was right, y’know” she said. “You can be disturbingly insightful sometimes.”

                ********************

The bell rang as Tara pushed open the door. The Magic Box had been closed for several hours but Anya hadn’t locked up yet. She’d been living at the shop since her demon nature meant she didn’t need the comforts humans did.

The demon shopkeeper sat at the main table, her elbows on the table and her hands together in front of her face. As Tara got closer she saw that Anya was holding something. As she dropped in to a chair opposite her she saw it was a pendant, silver metal surrounding a green gemstone, hanging from a silver chain. Anya held it so that the pendant swung in front of her face, her eyes flickering as they followed its movement.

“Its not an emerald” Anya said, not taking her eyes from the pendant.

“Huh?” Tara asked.

“The stone, it looks like an emerald, but its not.” Anya sighed and finally took her eyes from it, looking across at Tara. “It’s the source of my power, its what makes me a demon.”

Tara had already guessed that much, but she simply nodded. The demon’s sombre mood was worrying her.

“All my power” Anya said ironically. “Physically I’m as strong as Buffy, with the wish I can do things you and Willow never could, and how much use am I?” she asked rhetorically. “I’m even more useless than Xander.”

“You’re not useless” Tara said firmly.

“Oh no? That order lord thing froze me as easily as it did everyone else, I couldn’t teleport in to the house, I couldn’t break through the barrier. The whole time people were trying to kill you, I couldn’t do a thing!”

“You helped, you fought with us” Tara pointed out. She gave one of her lopsided smiles. “And I appreciate it.”

“I didn’t want you to be hurt” Anya said quietly, her eyes returning to the pendant.

“Because we’re friends” Tara said. “Which makes you far from useless.”

“Don’t you get it?” Anya asked, her voice suddenly loud and angry. “I’m a vengeance demon, I’m not supposed to have friends, I’m not supposed to want to help people. I’m supposed to hurt people.” Her voice grew quiet again. “I’m even worse at being a demon than I was at being human.”

Tara sighed. “Anya” she said sympathetically. “You know what we all think would be best for you, you know what D’Hoffren thinks. I think you have to decide what you think would be best for you.”

Anya looked thoughtful for a moment. “Maybe, maybe you could take it…” she said, offering Tara the pendant.

“Sorry Anya” Tara said as she stood and turned to leave. “Some decisions you have to make by yourself.”

Anya watched her friend as she crossed the empty shop and left. Then her eyes returned once more to the pendant.

                ********************

“Do you think Anya will really become human again?” Willow asked as she watched her lover pull on a nightie.

“I don’t know, I hope so” Tara said, moving to the bed and sitting on it. “But its something she has to decide for herself.”

Willow nodded. “Do you think he’ll come back?” she asked, looking over at the corner where they had imprisoned Marcus.

“Only if he’s stupid” Tara said. “He knows we’ll stop him, no matter how much power he steals, and he knows he can’t tempt you with dark magic.”

Willow smiled as that fact finally sunk in. “No, he can’t. There’s only one thing I need…” she moved forward and kissed Tara.

When they finally pulled apart, Tara asked; “do you still remember everything, from the balance point?”

“Yeah, I think everyone does” Willow said. “But they’ve all been really nice about it, saying they know I won’t let it happen.”

“Do you believe them?” Tara asked.

“Hmm, mostly” Willow admitted. “I know they’re still a little scared, I’m still a little scared. But only a little.”

Tara nodded, pleased that Willow was no longer terrified of losing control. “What about your memories?” she asked gently.

“Yeah, they’re pretty bad” Willow admitted, grimacing. “But Dawn said something today that really helped.”

“Dawnie? Buffy’s gonna be freaked” Tara said, laughing.

“Thank you” Willow said suddenly.

“For what?” Tara asked.

“For not being scared of me when you saw what I could have been, for believing I could keep control, for making me feel special, for being you, need I go on?”

Tara took hold of both her hands. “Well, I find being me quite easy, but then I’ve had a lot of practise” she said, giving one of her half smiles. “And making you feel special is easy, because you are, and because its how you make me feel too. And believing in you and not being scared of you were easy, because I know you.” She leaned forward and hugged Willow, and said in her ear; “and because I love you.”

“I love you” Willow said, holding Tara close.

After a few minutes she noticed that Tara was pulling on the shoulder of her tank top. “Baby? Everything ok?” she asked, pulling out of the hug.

“Everything’s fine” Tara said grinning, moving her hands to Willow’s shoulders and slipping her fingers under the top. “But I think this had better come off.”

Willow grinned back at her. “Yes ma’am.”

The End

So that’s it. Thank you all for reading, I hope you enjoyed it. Thanks to everyone who posted feedback, especially those with constructive criticism (thanks Grimmy!).

Sorry it took so long to finish, I think next time I write I’ll finish the whole thing, then start posting. As far as next time goes, I have got some notes for a sequal…

Anyway, thanks for being patient,

Re: The End!

Don't discuss your plans in front of your enemy. Just execute the plan. It's stated several times that Marcus used all his power to escape. That's nice for comfort but hardly known for sure. All Willow and Tara do know is that Marcus used a LOT of power to teleport out. Secondly, won't that power regenerated ? After all, if it doesn't Willow would have been out of power after season 5 :-)

Why DID the force-field around Marcus hold as long as it did ? Is it just as simple as Willow+Tara > Marcus or was there another explanation. Would have been nice to see the force-field grow smaller and smaller with Marcus inside though. I'll bet Willow wouldn't have found that idea tempting at least, he DID threaten Tara you know.

Heh, Marcus really isn't smart. From the get-go he knows the best way to get Willow angry is kill Tara, yet what does he do ? Right, he attacks Willow first... duh. I'm not all that comfortable with how easily Marcus seems to be able to just absorp any dark magic attack, it's a bit too easy for me. I'm also unclear at why he thinks he can absorp ANY magic Willow throws at him, probably just arrogance :D .

About calling for vengance on Marcus. Did you mean this line the other way around or did I miss something ?
Quote:
Xander was about to point out that Dawn had tried to kill Marcus
Were Dawn's injury not severy enough ? If so, Omi could have called for vengance... I'm sure Anya would exactly mind have a nice *cough* conversation *cough* with Marcus.

I did like Willow realizing that Marcus wanted her to attack him. Even if she didn't know the exact reason she did figure that through her dark-magic-angry-haze. Good for her. Same comment goes for Willow kicking the dark magic back out, it's good she knows how to handle that... means she doesn't have to live in fear of it anymore.

Still.... lets say Willow had attacked Marcus using the dark magic. Wouldn't that just have returned the same dark magic Marcus had forcefully infected Willow with ? Unless Willow has native dark magic in her, in which case she'll have to watch out for it's effect for the rest of her life. Hmm.... interesting that.

I like this story, mostly for the way Willow is portrayed... much better compared to season 6 in my opinion. In here she gets out her troubles on her own at is at least still smart and resourcefull. We get to see how she re-learns magic on a solid basis. I do wish Saul was still around to teach Willow things about magic, he struck me as a wise man. Granted Tara might not always agree with him, but that is what would make both Tara and Saul combined great teachers. Tara is a bit too idealistic for me at times, Saul was a good counter for that. Ah well... Saul is a bit like the Giles I would have wanted for Willow, if that makes sense :-)

A sequel I hear ?? Bring. It. On. :bounce

The delays between updates aren't all that horrible really. The updates themselves did appear fairly frequent though with some time between them. That in itself isn't too bad, just as long as we readers know or realize it. It's not like your updates were horrible small either :-)

Added after re-reading the story:

- Strange how the scoobies didn't notice Willow and Tara both missing from their dreams/memories during the Omi reading

- What was in the book Marcus stole from the Magic Box (don't let Anya ever find out about that btw.)

I finally got to read the end. Thanks so much for this fic, I think it's a little gem on pens that more people should read. I think you had great plot that really developed slowly and caught me by surprise. Thanks so much for finishing it, don't worry about how long it took as long as you finished it and made us all happy little kittens.

I liked the way it was Dawn here that helped Willow feel better about that other reality because it was Dawn's life that she put at risk the most. I can see you have lots of possibilities for a sequel, you've left some good ideas hanging there. Thank you!

Well, I just spent the last several hours reading this story from start to finish, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I have to apologize for not having discovered this fic before – I can’t imagine how I missed it, but I’m so glad I found it.

This was a terrific story throughout. It was suspenseful, exciting, and touching; and you did a great job weaving together so much of what happened and what didn’t happen on the show. You also did a wonderful job writing the girls and their relationship. Terrific stuff!

Thanks so much for this fic and for all the hard work that went into this. I really hope you post the sequel. Thanks again! :)

What a great story and a with new characters too that I actually cared about.

I hope there is a sequel. I know I'd be ready to read one.

Especially as Marcus seems to have vanished with the BOOK, the one that has the time changing spell in it.

I kinda think he should be hunted down and made to pay... in a non vengeancy totally within the law kinda way of course..

Thanks for such a good read,

Sequel coming to a Kitten board near you...

Postby chronic » Thu Jul 17, 2003 10:07 am

Grimmy: Marcus used most/all of the power he'd taken from others, his own power will regenerate but the power he stole from Rack and was given by the Order lord is gone.

Squishing Marcus in a shrinking forcefield? Yeah, that would have been fun…

As for why Willow and Tara were able to imprison him for so long, when in theory his borrowed power should have made him more powerful than them, well, that’s a very good question, and one that will be answered in the sequel.

Marcus could absorb Willow's magic because he had the imprint of her essence that Rack took when he "took the tour." However, this imprint fades over time, so he will lose that ability.

Willow kicking out the dark magic was her final victory over it: first she realises she doesn't need it, then learns to resist the temptation to use it, and finally is able to completely reject it.

Cindy Lou Who: You're welcome :) glad you enjoyed it

Xita: Glad you liked the plot twist, I think the events of the end of season six got what they deserved: being completely erased

I know Dawn can be annoying (really annoying!) but sometimes she comes out with words of wisdom, usually freaked out the audience as well as Buffy. It didn't occur to me until just before I started writing that update that Willow and Dawn have something in common, important events in their lives that technically didn't happen.

Scout: Glad you enjoyed it! I've finished my outline for the sequel, and started on the first chapter. It’s a bit soon to guess when I'll finish it, but hopefully I'll do it quicker than this fic!

EffieBlue: Ah yes, the book. Rest assured Anya will be seriously pissed off when she finds out someone's stolen something from her shop. As for what Marcus plans to do with it, you'll have to wait for the sequel :p

Hi Chronic!

Just finished reading, and I loved it!:clap

Really good! It's always great to read fics that focus not only on W/T, but that give us great plots with a lot of action and mystery. Great job!

Any news on the sequel?:pray (Please say yes! Please say soon!)

Well Chronic, I guess you know that you just made me spend about five hours reading :clap . Once I started I could not stop until I finished, I'm glad I found it already completed. Don't know if I could have survived having to read it in chapters.

A well written and completely enjoyable story, if they ever have a collection about alternate timelines in a book, you should definately submit this for inclusion. I so enjoyed this version of history better than the one which actually ran and, I think, was only so they could portray Dark Willow.

Now I have to go find the sequel. :sigh . :wink :)

I don't know what it was lately that reminded me of this story, but then I couldn't remember reading the end so went a-searching, and sure enough, I had missed it. I'm so glad that I remembered this fine story. The ending was as well thought out and interesting as the rest of it. Thanks - albeit belated :)

I wonder if you have done anything about a sequel?

Sequel...?

Postby chronic » Tue Aug 03, 2004 11:14 am

Um, well, I had some ideas for a sequel (actually for 3 or 4 sequels) but after taking 4 months to write one chapter I realised that writing doesn’t come very easily to me. I might come back to it later, but I think that for now my writing days are probably over.
