I don't think I can beat scrapple, but I had a roommate who ate spam sushi which is apparently fairly common in Hawaii.

I used to eat spam a lot when I was a kid. It was one of the few things my mom knew how to cook, you know, open the can, slice, and fry. So I lived on that, and Hamburger Helper ( it makes a great meal ;) ).

Spam is rank. Makes me shudder just to think of it.

on the subject of reconstituted food stuffs ....meats of this kind in general , i feel it apt to mention one of my mothers favourite pureed animal stuffs that is FISH ROE . there is reason in this bizarre mush of the inside of fish , you see , she was a miner's daughter in nottingham , so such grave taste is inevitable.

it's worse than spam , which is awful in it's own way.

ahh , they share a niche = Pureed meats....in a can. YUM

Ruth, yes, it's the same spam, and Tulipp, it was quite ironic that your 666th post was about spam. If anyone had a doubt about how evil it is...

Sweetjane, on the subject of smelly fish products, I'm cooking a Thai red curry tonight and is there anything that smells worse than Thai fish sauce (to humans, my cat loves the smell)? Yet somehow the resulting dish isn't smelly at all and tastes great. It's a miracle of some sort.

...thai fish sauce does rather smell , and miracle it is that the end result is something tasty. to me fish roe smells in the can , out the can and on the plate- although my sense of smell may be altereed by the fact that the fish is ususally accompanied by a middle-aged woman in casual pastel wear , singing along to micheal bolten , very loudly...

so you see my point .

fish. singing . micheal bolton.

it's all bad honey!

But evil's good.:wink

Every few years, I get a craving for Spam. I just fry some up, put a few slices on a French roll, and squirt some deli mustard on it. Then, I let it sit for a minute to allow the grease to soak into the bread. And I wash it down with a big glass of iced tea.

Hungry now.

Well I like spam. I don't eat so much of it; I've graduated onto luncheon meat, which is basically the same kind of thing only less greasy. And it's dirt cheap, which means when I was a student about a hundred years ago, I lived on luncheon meat sandwiches.

Oh, and beer.

Good staple diet there.

Sorry, Ruth, but spam is in fact evil. It comes in a little oval can, and everyone knows that oval cans are just...bad.

This from a person who once spent a summer eating only rye bread and gray poupon every night for dinner.

No no, I have to make a stand here for ovals. My mum always makes rhubarb crumble in an oval dish. And as we know, rhubarb crumble is the food of champions.

And um, British people.

God. Crumble. And custard. :drool

And woo! I'm a Volumey Text! Dear lord. [i:57182f42f1] *starts cleaning glasses furiously*[/i:57182f42f1]

Are you saying being a champion and being British are mutually exclusive?

I used to hate rhubarb crumble when I was little, but mum used to force it upon us. Quite like it now. Though apricot crumble is [b:09889f3aa8] way[/b:09889f3aa8] better.

Ruth, love the new level. You and large amounts of important words - seems kind of apt :)

Technically speaking, it should be volume 4. And um, I'll get around to it. When I'm feeling all "Willow-and-Tara-and-a-big-fuck-off-motorcycle"... ;)

Which you know, should be pretty soon. Heh.

Wow, y'all went a really long time without mentioning the famous BF. There used to be reference to it in every thread on here. Granted I've never seen it, but I do miss people talking about it all the time. ;)

Edited to add: Not that I've ever been to BF camp. But I understand some other really cool kids went there once. I just heard about it in the locker room.

Screw going home sick. Think they'd let me go home lust-crazed?

Okay - explanation of BF for the relative newcomer, please?

And to continue with the food ...

I'm West Virginian by birth and grew up on Spam; it was supper at least once a week. Ditto for hash. Other culinary delights included: soup beans with ham bone and fresh bread, buckwheat cakes (they inflate during digestion - just ask Darcy) with spicy sausage, wilted lettuce (leaf lettuce with melted bacon fat and green onions), stewed rhubarb, rhubarb cobbler with milk & mountains of sugar, parsnips, rutabagas, buttermilk, and hot dogs with chili (no beans) & onions.

Treats:
Salt fish, we had once or twice every winter, same for oyster soup, Vienna sausages, which look little baby thingies, and sheet cake (chocolate cake with chocolate icing and a hell of a lot of margarine).

And one thing that I ate in Egypt that is totally indescribable: Bully Beef.

Ciao, Melissa

Biker Fic - okay, makes more sense now. Thanks, Autumn.
BF, now I have images of red hair and black leather partially inspired by Richard Thompson.

Grrrr, I'm supposed to be thinking about chocolate, not leather....

Has anyone here ever eaten opossum?

A relative of mine, from Alabama, ate a lot of opossum growing up. It wasn't out of necessity, but because her mother considered 'possum a delicacy. Before she died, she told me several ways to cook it, one of which required a paper bag. (That was the baked version, I think.)

Anyway, I think I'll stick to Spam.
