Its Elvis is still dead Friday, MKF

Postby Rosenberg » Thu Aug 15, 2002 6:02 pm

Its after midnight here in the Eastern time zone, so that officially makes it Friday. That being the case, and since I cant sleep, Ill start the daily thread.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the passing of Elvis Presley. I can still remember where I was when I heard the news. I had just started working at a new store, which we were preparing for grand opening. We were unloading freight from a truck and John, my stock clerk, told me that Elvis had died. I dont believe him, because he was always telling me outlandish stories to see how gullible I could be. When I found out it was really true, I was just stunned. I wasnt a big Elvis fan, but he was an icon and his passing was a harsh lesson in mortality.

That would bring us to the question of the day. Does anyone else have any Elvis memories, and what would W/Ts favorite Elvis song be? Ill cast my vote for Love Me Tender.

I was camping w/ my family, driving down a muddy road in Minnesota when we heard over the radio Elvis had died. There was no significant reaction from us, as Elvis was between generations: he came too late for my parents (who hated him), too early for my brother and me (I was 15 when he died).

Since then, I've come to an appreciation of him, but more as a focal point for other people's fantasies and obsessions. I'll never forget overhearing a couple of women talking about Elvis sightings (this was about 15 years ago). They were [i:0c2154bf47] deadly[/i:0c2154bf47] serious and referred to him as [b:0c2154bf47] The King[/b:0c2154bf47]. "He coulda faked it, just wanting to get away from it all" one of them said tearfully. It's really fascinating: like seeing the birth of a new religion.

Willow and Tara and "The King?" Well, I mainly think Willow was bluffing in "Wild@Heart" when she said she loved him. Nevertheless, to indulge in a moment of fan fiction here, I can imagine that UCSunnydale Lesbian Club (the one Riley helped w/ the sign!) having a Valentine's Day Dance. At it, I can see our grrlz camping it up to "Jailhouse Rock" (a homoerotic classic!) and then having a slow smoochfest to "I Can't Help Falling in Love with You." :heart

GG [i:0c2154bf47] . . . the same way I'm deadly serious about [b:0c2154bf47] Tara[/b:0c2154bf47] sightings.[/i:0c2154bf47] :p Out

Indeed Rosenberg, we are close to the same age, so my memories of that day and Elvis are very vivid..I remember watching Blue Hawaii and Viva Las Vegas when they first came out..

I loved his songs too, grew up with them, Just wanna be your teddy bear, Hound Dog, Blue Suede Shoes were some of my favorites..I still have the newspapers, somewhere, telling of his death..

He certainly was an icon and for a generation of folks like me he was a wonderful entertainer...I think Love me Tender would be the song for W/T as well..

Your question got me thinking of the things that have happened during my 40 plus years of existence..

i was in the third grade when the word came that President JFK had been shot, i remember my brothers number coming up for the draft during the end of the Vietnam war, but he never had to go because the US pulled out...I was around
for the civil rights movement in the 60s..The feminist movement in the 70s and the gay rights movement
in the 80s...

I watched on my living room tv as the first man walked on the moon, was one of the first 18 year olds allowed to vote, saw Nixon resign, watched in awe as the Berlin Wall came down.. Remember watching the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show and the day Jimmi, Janice and Jim died..I remember wearing love beads and wanting to be a hippy.... I remember the first gay pride in SF and the many friends ive lost to Aids...

I think one more thing i will remember is seeing the first lesbian couple on a TV show and how proud i was of that
and that so many took W/T into their hearts..It may not
seem like such a big deal compared to the rest of "history", but i think when people look back on it, theyll realize how goundbreaking and special it was ..

I've been to Graceland. And to be honest I went there for the camp factor. What was funny was the fact that while I was swallowing snickers at the Jungle Room and the like the polyester clad women there were so in awe. I'm surprised they did not turn on me and beat me to a pulp. But that might stain the carpet in the kingdom. Frankly, it scared me.

In fact it was my scariest campy tour until I recently trumped it by taking in the Liberace museum. At least with the Liberace museum I was with a dear friend so I had someone to share the experience with. My favorite part of that was having the museum helper woman explain to us how Liberace used the very room his costumes like "The Flame" were now in as a training room for young performers he was helping and that he had conveniently installed showers in the bathroom for their use so they would not have to go home all "sweaty". She then asked us if we'd seen Liberace's bedroom which was conveniently located right next door. LOL. And if you are not scared yet, I leave you with this: www.liberace.org/liberace...s/2505.jpg

I was at home with my family, digging a foundation for an outbuilding. We were running jack hammers so I had the radio turned up loud and we stopped what we were doing when they made the announcement. My parents were way too old to be Elvis fans, but it was weird nonetheless because he had become such an icon.

As for W/T, I can definitely see them wandering into a small bar somewhere, feeding quarters in the juke box to cut the rug to All Shook Up or Surrender or Little Sister. But if I had to pick an Elvis song to be "their song" it would be Power of My Love:
[i:b8330403d3] Baby I want you, you'll never get away
My love will haunt you yes haunt you night and day
Touch it, pound it, what good does it do
There's just no stoppin' the way I feel for you
Cos' every minute, every hour you'll be shaken
By the strength and mighty power of my love[/i:b8330403d3]

I guess i'm too young, i missed elvis' death... But i must say that sometimes, i'm quite amazed to see how much some people are still worshipping him. I met a woman once, she was like in her 40's and had an elvis tatoo on her shoulder. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I love tatoo (though i don't have any... yet), but for sure, i'd never get a tatoo of some celebrity, even if it's my biggest idol. As i would never get a tatoo of a girlfriend's name or stuffs like that. But again, not that there's anything wrong with that. Just that in my opinion, those things may be too ephemeral to get a lifelong tatoo of them.

[b:aae9511c6c] friskylez:[/b:aae9511c6c] just wanted to say that i loved what you said. I mean, to list tara and willow next to JFK's assassination, the first step on the moon, the vietnam war... Yeah, they're definitely part of the history. Too bad we can't count them among the first lesbian couple on tv that ended well... :(

As for willow and tara favorite elvis song, i'd go for love me tender too.

I was only four when he died, but my Mother was a big fan so I grew up listening to his music. My favourite song of his is probably "Can't help falling in love". It also happens to be one of the songs in my drunken repertoire! [img:5d6f6dd3a5]http://homepage.eircom.net/~mollyig/wink2.gif[/img:5d6f6dd3a5]

Not a great Elvis fan, I'm afraid. But wonderful daily thread, Elaine. :)

I actually liked that song that's just been released. Because it just pointed towards the sheer moneymaking machine that pop has become; especially when The King has been dead for 25 years...well, either that or working in a supermarket in Milton Keynes. ;)

I was watching the NBC news when it it came on. I went and told my mom, she was in the kitchen that Elvis had died. She didn't believe me. It was kinda sureal.

Willow and Tara's favorite Elvis song? Well hard call. I she Willow liking more of the young movie Elvis phase. But Tara secretly like the fat, Vegas area Elvis.

Good Morning all and happy Friday!!

Hmm Elvis was already gone when I was born. And I was raised in a rather cloistered environment so I am hardly an expert on his music. actually I'm just in a chatty mood so I'll give it a go. Wasn't there a song about a losing a child? I am unsure of the title "Lord, You gave me a mountain" I think?

I just thought of one that used to always make me cry - the one about the dog, was it called "Shep"? It used to set me off in floods of tears.

Of course, I am also the person whose mother had to drag her out of the cinema halfway through my first ever Lassie film - no-one else could hear what was going on!

Chris, I guess i was putting things in perspective, there has been so much history during my 40 plus yrs...To have never had a same sex relationship on TV and then to finally get one, for me it was pretty awesome...

Kind of goes back to what BBOG said about Uhura on Star Trek..i remember watching the original Star Trek when it first came on TV and i loved it..All the different characters, aliens for petes sake on a TV show and a black communications officer...How cool...

Well thats the way i feel about W/T, when i first saw them
it was like, wow, what a huge step for the gay community..
Maybe now people will begin to see that we are a part of society, we are just "regular" people except for who we love..

For me it has been a very big deal...Maybe not to the extent of say the Berlin Wall coming down, but as an older lesbian
who had spent years searching for her identity, it was pretty monumental...We've come along way baby (but theres a long way to go).

I was born in the very same year Elvis died, so no memories at all. But I do remember watching his films over and over again when I was a kid. About the song, wow, the first one that crossed my mind was Its Now Or Never...

"Just like a willow/ We would cry an ocean/ If we lost true love/ And sweet devotion/ Your lips excite me/ Let your arms invite me/ For who knows when/ We'll meet again this way"

I can even picture Tara singing that to the red hair...

I was..oh, three, four when Elvis died, and my parents weren't big fans, so I don't have strong memories of the impact of his death.

I think, in some ways, I'm a little ambivalent about Elvis, and I think that ambivalence is not uncommon among african americans. (Which is not to say Elvis doesn't have african american fans, of course he does)

In a sense, Elvis was the first huge crossover artist of the rock and roll era, and was therefore emblematic of a kind of social crossroads for the country. There's a sort of tension, which isn't Elvis's fault per se, about how radio stations and record companies and promoters treated his music compared to his african american contemporaries. But there's also an argument that his huge popularity helped create opportunities for other early rock and roll/rockabilly artists, black and white, during a time when that kind of music wasn't always accepted anyway. You know, it's complicated. :)

Oh, and hi folks. Thought I was dead, didn't you? :p

Morning, kitties! I laughed really loud when I read the title of this thread because that is all the radio was talking about coming in. Elvis, Elvis, Elvis. My boss laughed because they would start talking about him and I would say, but he's dead, they would go off on other topics about him and I was saying he is still dead. *laugh* I find it all cute though. Must be in lala land from getting my raise.

Autumn - I have to agree with Sass, that image burned my retinas! *grin*

I have also been to Graceland once and it is amazing to see the die hard fans there. Who else would pay $25 to $50 for some of those trinkets? What is even worse is that we lived only an hour away from Memphis, so Elvis mania was rampant! I was three when he died so I don't remember much and I wasn't a huge, huge fan. I like his music, but didn't care about watching the movies. My baby sister was a different story. She was a die-hard Elvis fan from the time she was born! She even loved his favorite sandwich - peanut butter and banana. *sigh*

Well, now for something completely different. Today my third anniversary with my company. Yeah. Tommorrow, I start Year Four. *laugh* Only good thing? 15% discount now. :)

As for Willow and Tara, I don't know what they would listen to, but I would think songs like Teddy Bear and Can't Help Falling in Love With you.

Have a great weekend kitties!! And len, we are glad you aren't dead. :D

Happy Friday Kittens!

I vaguely remember when Elvis died. I was around 10 at the time and remember seeing some footage on the news but I don't recall what I felt. That said it obviously didn't impact me much. I'm not a huge fan I mean I like his music but really didn't want to listen to the news this morning because it was a bunch of Elvis stuff and impersonators. Its not like it is news that he is dead. No offense to those that love Elvis.

My girl and I were gonna go to Memphis this weekend to hang out and shop but after realizing that it will be mobbed with Elvis fans and activities we decided to go next weekend. Weve done the Graceland tour (not really sure what to say about that experience :hmm I think I would have to agree with Autumns take on the whole thing)

Well, as far as W/T goes I would have to go with Love Me Tender or All Shook Up

Greetings Kittens,
I coming out from lurking again to reply to this post. When I went to bed last night, on the news was a report about some 30,000 people outside the gates of Graceland holding a candlelight vigil for the annniversary of Elvis' death. I woke up this morning and again the same report was on. Okay, I understand that he was and still is an icon in the world of music. The man has passed on but his music will remain very much alive as long as record stores and radio stations continue the tradition. There are many songs of Elvis' that I love. However, I have never seen him except an occassional impersonator. I don't think he is roaming the Earth somewhere selling cars or working in Burger King in Simpleton, Ohio. I find it hard to believe that he still has such an impact on so many peoples lives.
[b:fb5bcae048] [i:fb5bcae048] I say this as I am reading the Kitten Board where we idolize ficticious characters and the actresses who play them.[/i:fb5bcae048][/b:fb5bcae048] :hmm :rolleyes

I was 11 when he died and I remember my brothers and I were watching TV at my grandmothers house and the report came on. I also remember for the next week, that was all that we heard about. I don't remember having any reaction. I reacted more when I heard of the death of Princess Diana and when the verdict was read for OJ Simpson. Maybe because I was older then I don't know.

As for the question....I think "The Wonder of You" fits Willow and Tara perfectly.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!!!
Love to All,
Barb
