------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Part 6Faith’s bed was covered with clothes. She rummaged through her closet, throwing items of clothing over her shoulder and mumbling to herself. Tara stood in the doorway, watching her.
Tara: What are you doing?
Faith: Looking for something to wear.
Faith slammed her closet doors closed, angrily.
Faith: I have no clothes!!
Tara looked towards the clothes filled bed and raised an eyebrow.
Faith: Don’t just stand there, get in here and help me.
The blonde chuckled and did as she was told. After a few minutes, she held something up.
Tara: What about this?
Faith: This Buffy’s mom’s party, I can’t walk in there wearing a leather mini skirt.
Tara shrugged and put the skirt back down, picking something else up.
Tara: How about this?
Faith eyed the top and smiled.
Faith: Perfect.
She grabbed it out of Tara’s grasp and put it on.
Faith: Okay, what time is it?
Tara: Seven forty-five.
Faith: Buffy’s going to be here in a minute.
Faith grabbed her coat and rushed out of the room. Tara smirked and counted back from five in her head. When she got to one, Faith re-entered the room, scowling at her.
Faith: You were just going to let me go out without my pants, weren’t you?
Buffy’s houseBuffy made the last few adjustments to her hair and smiled.
Buffy: Not to shabby.
She left the bathroom and hurried down the stairs. Her mom met her in the hallway.
Joyce: Are you ready?
Buffy: Oh um, I forgot to tell you, I’m bringing someone.
Joyce: You are?
Buffy: Yeah. I hope you don’t mind. I’m picking them up in a minute.
Joyce: Not at all. Just make sure I get to meet this date of yours. Find out if they’re good enough for my daughter.
Before Buffy had time to reply, her mother had left.
Buffy: Great.
A little laterTara opened the door of the apartment and smiled when she saw Buffy standing on the other side. Buffy returned the smile and stepped into the apartment.
Buffy: Is Faith ready?
Tara: Probably not. She’s spent the last hour rearranging her wardrobe.
Faith: Hey. It’s not my fault I couldn’t find anything to wear.
Both girls turned their heads and Buffy’s jaw hit the floor. Dressed in a pair of black, leather trousers and a top that left little to the imagination, was Faith. Slinging her leather coat over the shoulder, she walked towards the two girls. Tara smirked and leaned over to whisper something in Buffy’s ear.
Tara: You want me to get you a bucket for that drool?
Buffy didn’t even hear her question; she was too busy looking at Faith.
Buffy: Wow. I mean, uh…. Wow. You look…. Wow.
The brunette smiled and lowered her gaze, shyly.
Faith: Not lookin’ too bad yourself.
Buffy stood in silence for a moment, gawking at Faith. Tara shoved her shoulder and she finally snapped out of it.
Buffy: Um, my mom’s probably already at the party now so….
Faith: We should probably get going?
Buffy: Yeah.
For a moment, neither girl could take their eyes away from each other. It took Tara coughing to shake them from their trance.
Buffy: Right. Um, I parked the car outside.
Faith: We don’t have to listen to Cher do we?
Buffy glared at her.
Buffy: Carry on, and you’ll be walking to the party.
Faith: Maybe I just won’t go.
Buffy: Maybe I’ll have to carry you there.
They stared at each other for a second before bursting into giggles. Tara rolled her eyes as they began walking out of the apartment.
Tara: Have fun.
Buffy: We will.
Tara closed the door behind them and locked it. Sighing, she made her way into the sitting room and sat down in front of the TV. She missed Willow. She’d seen the redhead a couple of hours previous, but being away from Willow was torture.
Making my way down town
Walking fast
Faces pass
And I’m home bound
Staring blankly ahead
Just making my way
Making a way
Through the crowd
And I need you
And I miss you
And now I wonderTheir car pulled up in front of a large building. Buffy shut off the engine and looked up at it.
Buffy: We’re here. You ready?
Faith: Sure.
Buffy: Lets go.
She climbed out of the car, locked the doors, grinned at Faith and began walking towards the party. Faith stood and silent watched her for a moment.
If I could fall into the sky
Do you think time
Would pass me by
Cause you know I’d walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you…. TonightTara absently played with the ring on her finger and smiled as she remembered her and Willow’s first kiss.
It’s always times like these
When I think of youFaith caught up to Buffy, sneaking a glance whenever she thought Buffy wasn’t looking.
And I wonder
If you ever think of me
Cause everything’s so wrong
And I don’t belong
Living in
Your precious memory
Cause I need you
And I miss you
And I wonderTara took out her wallet from her jeans pocket and opened it. Inside was a row of three pictures. All of her and Willow.
If I could fall
Into the sky
Do you think time
Would pass me by, oh
Cause you know I’d walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you…. TonightAs they approached the door of the building, Faith suddenly stopped and turned to the blonde standing beside her.
Faith: Buffy…. I….
I, I drown in your memory
I, I don’t wanna let this go
I, I’ve fallenBuffy: What?
Faith sighed.
Faith: Nothing.
Making my way down town
Walking fast
Faces pass
And I’m home bound
Staring blankly ahead
Making my way
Making a way
Through the crowd
And I still need youTara ran her finger over the picture of Willow, smiling.
And I still miss you
And I wonder
If I could fall
Into the sky
Do you think time
Would pass us byFaith followed Buffy up the steps towards the building.
Buffy: You okay?
Faith: Hmm? Oh, yeah. I’m fine.
Buffy: You just seem kinda…. Distant.
Cause you know I’d walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you….Faith: I’m fine.
[/b]If I could fall
Into the sky
Do you think time
Would pass me by
Cause you know I’d walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you….
If I could just hold you…. Tonight[/b]
Tara looked up when she heard knocking on the apartment door. Putting her wallet back into her pocket, she got up to answer it.
Tara: Willow?
Willow: Hey.
Tara: I thought you w-were going out tonight. With O-Oz.
Willow: I was…. Funny thing happened.
Willow stepped forward, causing Tara to move back slightly. The redhead pushedthe door closed and grinned.
Tara: Oh?
Willow: Yeah, see…. I was having an okay time…. But I couldn’t help but think of other things I could be doing.
Tara swallowed.
Tara: R-really?
Willow nodded and stepped closer so she and Tara were pressed together.
Willow: I couldn’t seem to get this gorgeous blonde out of my head. I think Oz was kinda fed up with having to repeat everything twice.
Tara smiled.
Willow: So, he suggested I leave and go get what I want. Which brings me to where I am now.
She looked at her girlfriend, their gazes locked.
Tara: And w-what is it that you want?
Willow began walking again, pushing Tara to move in the direction of the blonde’s bedroom.
Willow: What I’ve always wanted.
Tara back up until she hit her bedroom door, unable to go any further. Willow’s hand slipped behind Tara and she looked for the doorknob. When she found it, she gave it a twist and the door opened, allowing Tara to back up further.
Willow: You.
She pulled Tara towards her for a kiss and kicked the door closed with her foot.
At the partyBuffy and Faith walked through the hallway of the building. The sound of music could be heard playing in one of the rooms up ahead. Buffy glanced at Faith. The brunette was fiddling about with the sleeve of her leather jacket, something Buffy thought she looked incredibly cute doing. When Faith lifted her head, Buffy quickly averted her gaze to something else. Faith smiled and returned her attention to the sleeve of her jacket.
Buffy: You okay?
Faith: Yeah, fine. So um, what room-
Faith was cut off as a woman emerged from one of the rooms. She smiled at them and pulled Buffy into a hug, much to Faith’s confusion. When they separated, Buffy turned to Faith.
Buffy: Faith, this is my mom. Mom, this is Faith.
Joyce smiled and offered her hand to Faith. Faith took it and returned her smile, nervously. Joyce glanced towards Buffy and arched an eyebrow, questioningly.
Joyce: Your date?
Buffy’s eyes widened.
Buffy: Oh, I um, I-
Faith: Yeah.
Buffy frowned and turned to look at Faith, who lifted her gaze. They stayed looking at each other for a moment, until Buffy smiled and nodded.
Buffy: Yeah, mom. My date.
Joyce beamed and the three of them walked into the room where the party was. The room was huge. Lights hung from the ceiling, music played through the speakers, the dance floor was packed and there were three tables stacked high with food. Buffy took one look at the table, excused herself and Faith, took the brunette’s hand and dragged her towards the tables. She grabbed a plate and started piling food onto it.
Faith: Jeez, B. Slow down.
Buffy: Hey, I’m hungry
F.
Faith shuffled her feet nervously. She wasn’t hungry. She glanced up at Buffy, who was still busy piling food onto her plate.
I wonder why she went with it…. Said I was her date. Does she think of this as a date? She I ask her to dance or something? What if she doesn’t think of it as a date and I make a complete ass out of myself?Buffy: Come on. Let’s find somewhere to sit.
Joyce: Buffy!
Both girls turned to find Buffy’s mother and two women from the gallery walking towards them.
Joyce: Buffy, this is Mrs Thompson, she works at the gallery as the vice manager and Miss Singer is the sales assistant.
Buffy: Nice to meet you.
She took both women’s hand.
Miss Singer: Nice to meet you too. Who’s your friend?
Buffy: Oh, this-
Joyce: This is Faith, my daughter’s date. Kids. They think if they don’t bring a date to a party, their life is over.
Mrs Thompson smiled and shook Faith’s hand, while Miss Singer’s smile instantly disappeared and she dismissed the offer when faith held her hand out.
Miss Singer: Date?
Buffy frowned as Miss Singer glanced at the both. If she didn’t know better, she would have sworn Miss Singer looked disgusted. Joyce must have thought the same.
Joyce: Oh, come on, Pauline. That sort of thinking left with slavery.
Miss Singer merely sneered at them both and walked away. Joyce watched her, before turning back to Buffy and Faith.
Joyce: I’m sorry about that, girls.
Faith: No worries. It’s not like this is the first time that’s happened. I um, where’s the bathroom?
Joyce pointing in the direction of the bathroom and Faith excused herself. After a moment, Buffy turned to her mother.
Buffy: I should go check if she’s okay.
Joyce: Buffy….
Buffy: Yeah?
Joyce: Why didn’t you tell me you had a girlfriend?
Buffy smiled.
Buffy: I uh…. I guess I thought you’d freak. You know, finding out something you didn’t really expect.
Joyce: You sound like you’re talking from experience.
Buffy: I guess I am.
Faith and Tara’s apartment.Willow and Tara were snuggled together in Tara’s bed, only the sheets covering their bodies. Sweat glistened their foreheads and both girls had content smiles on their faces. Willow pulled the sheet up around her shoulders and rested her head on Tara’s chest, somewhat breathless. Tara absently began playing with her girlfriend’s hair.
Willow: Mmm…. You know, it’s funny.
Tara: What is?
Willow: I felt so unbelievably nervous coming over here….
The blonde chuckled.
Tara: Why?
Willow: Well, despite what people might think, I’m not as daring when it comes to…. Stuff.
Tara: Stuff?
Willow: Yes. Stuff.
Tara giggled and ruffled Willow’s hair.
Tara: Stuff.
Willow: Good stuff.
Tara: Good stuff?
Willow grinned and lifted her head off Tara’s chest. Moving up the bed, she placed small kisses along the top of Tara’s chest, along her neck and collarbone, finally resting on the blonde’s lips.
Willow: Very good stuff.
The PartyFaith was sitting alone at one of the tables. Buffy had just gone to the bathroom a few minutes ago. She took a sip of her coke and looked up when she heard someone approach. Miss Singer was walking towards her looking angry. She slammed her hands on the table, sending Faith’s coke flying everywhere.
Miss Singer: You people disgust me.
Faith: Excuse me?
Miss Singer: Walking around as if you’re better than everyone else.
Faith: What?
Miss Singer: You’re a disgrace to all of us who are decent.
Faith: Look lady, I don’t know you. You don’t know me. So, how about you shut that hole in your face, before I rip you a new one?
Miss Singer: Well, I never-
Faith stood up and leaned over the table, shouting her next remark.
Faith: Messed around in the bedroom? I wonder why.
A loud slap was heard as Miss Singer’s palm connected with Faith’s face. The brunette’s head snapped to the side and she bit down on her tongue, refusing to hit her back.
Miss Singer: Disgusting, the lot of you. They should be locked up and throw away the key.
Faith: Who? The gang of psychotic homophobe’s that you happen to be the president of?
Miss Singer gave her a disgusted look before leaving the room and the party. Faith clenched her jaw and wiped away a tear from the corner of her eye, as Buffy returned from the bathroom.
Buffy: Oh my god, what happened?
Faith: Nothing.
Buffy: Are you okay?
Faith: I need a drink.
Faith pushed her way through the crowd of people that were staring at her and made her way over to the drinks table.
Faith and Tara’s apartment Willow sighed as their kiss ended. Something she never ever wanted to happen. She grinned and moved to lie next to her girlfriend, pulling the sheets up around her body again.
Willow: Faith will probably be home soon.
Tara: Do you wanna get up?
Willow: No! God, no.
Tara chuckled and ran her fingers through Willow’s hair.
Willow: I just…. I’m worried about her.
Tara: Yeah. She seems s-so….
Willow: Lost?
Tara: Yeah. It’s like she knows what she wants, but thinks she can’t have it.
Willow: Maybe she can’t.
Tara frowned.
Tara: What?
Willow: Well, we both know she wants Buffy…. Maybe, maybe Buffy doesn’t feel the same. Faith’s my best friend and I don’t want to see her hurt, ever, but…. Maybe it’s wishful thinking this time.
Tara: I don’t know, Will…. I know Buffy…. And I know that she’s not one who falls in love easily, but I see her looking at Faith…. And it’s like all the love in the world is shinning in her eyes.
Willow: Kind of like when I look at you then?
The blonde smiled and leaned forward, placing a small kiss on the redhead’s lips. A kiss that soon grew more passionate and once again, the girl’s were glad no one was home.
At the partyConsuming bucket loads of alcohol in under a number of seconds was defiantly Faith’s strong point. She and Buffy, who had also had a little so much of the bubbly, sat at a table at the back of the room.
Faith: You know what I hate?
Faith’s speech was slurred and she started swinging her bottle around in front of her while she spoke.
Faith: Small minded schmucuses.
Buffy: Wha?
Faith: Schmusasses.
Buffy: Wazzat?
Faith: Sh… sh… shmucks.
Buffy: People suck.
Faith: Sure do.
Buffy: Isn’t hummus a weird word?
Faith burst into laughter, an insane, out of control, drunken kind of laughter, and spat her drink everywhere.
Faith: Heeheehee…. Hummus.
Buffy lifted her bottle to her mouth, only to find it empty.
Buffy: Someone drank my beer!
Faith: The nuver… neves…. The nerve!
Buffy: Piff…. Common…. We need to go.
Faith: We do?
Buffy stood up, swaying slightly, and walked towards her mother, trying to act sober.
Buffy: Mom, it’s been a great, great, great, great, great, great party…. But me and Faith have to leave.
Joyce: Oh, Buffy, are you sure?
Buffy: Yup. Sorry. I’ll see you at home?
Joyce nodded and gave her daughter a hug. Sensing the drunken state she was in, she asked if she and Faith needed a ride home.
Buffy: No, no. You s-stay and en… enjoy the party. I will be fine.
She turned and stumbled away, back towards Faith. Meanwhile, Faith was trying to remember how to put her jacket on. Buffy grabbed her hand and pulled her up. The brunette giggled when she realised she couldn’t feel her legs and decided to announce it to the entire room.
Faith: I have no legs!
At this point, Buffy also began to giggle, dragging Faith out of the room, pausing in the doorway and addressing everyone at the party.
Buffy: Thank you for you hos… hospitil… hospitality! Have a wonderful evening, and if you’re driving tonight, don’t forget your car.
With that, Faith dragged her out of the room and they walked out of the building still giggling. Half way down the road, Buffy stopped and leaned against a lamppost.
Buffy: You know…. I think I may have had a little too much to drink.
Faith: It’s better than feeling like you haven’t had enough.
Buffy paused before answering.
Buffy: Das true.
Faith: You gonna stand there all night?
Buffy: Yup.
Faith stomped forward, picked up Buffy, threw her over her shoulder, and began walking back down the street, wobbling slightly as she walked.
Buffy: Faith! Put me down!
Faith: Wha?
Buffy: Put me down!
Faith: Don’t wanna.
Faith suddenly began to grin.
Faith: You ever played chicken?
Buffy: Don’t you dare! I’ve very drunk and can’t run!
The brunette giggled and ran walked out into the road, Buffy screaming and kicking, slapping her back.
Buffy: Faith! I’ve had enough of cars almost hitting people for one day.
Faith didn’t move.
Buffy: Faith, I mean it! Please!
Suddenly a car came out of nowhere. Faith lunged out of the way, rolling onto the grass, Buffy tumbling with her. They landed in a heap on the floor and Faith burst into giggles. Buffy sat up, her bottom lip began to tremble and tears started streaming down her face. Faith’s giggles stopped.
Faith: Buffy?
The brunette moved towards her friend, reaching out to lift her head, but Buffy pushed her hand away.
Buffy: Don’t touch me!
Faith: What? Buffy I-
Buffy: After what happened earlier, Faith, do you really think I want to be play chilicken… chicklenen…. I can’t even talk properly!
The over emotional blonde began sobbing and Faith pulled herself up off of the ground, and made her way towards Buffy. She sat down behind the blonde and wrapped her arms around her, pulling Buffy close. Buffy turned slightly in the embrace, wrapped her arms around Faith’s neck and buried her head in Faith’s shoulder.
Faith: Hey, hey…. calm down. It’s okay.
Buffy: No…. it isn’t. Do-do you have any idea how afraid I was when I saw you step out in front of hat car? Do you have any idea, Faith?
Faith: I….
The blonde pulled back to look at her. It started to rain.
Buffy: I was so scared, Faith. I was petrified that car was going to hit you and…. And I’d never get the chance to tell you that…. That….
Faith lifted her gaze and their eyes met.
Faith: What?
Buffy didn’t speak. She just looked at Faith. Suddenly her tears stopped, time stopped, her heart stopped, all for a moment. Rain poured down all around them, yet they were oblivious to it. Then, ever so slowly, Buffy leaned in towards Faith and the brunette’s breath caught in her throat as Buffy pressed her lips to her own. It was tender, light and neither of them pushed it. It was more of a test. Faith pulled back slightly to look at Buffy. The blonde smiled and when Faith returned it, they kissed again. Soft and light, like before, but soon became passion-filled. Buffy moved herself so she was sitting in Faith’s lap and the brunette’s arm repositioned themselves around Buffy’s waist. The kiss deepened and Buffy slowly pushed Faith onto her back, never breaking the kiss. The rain continued to fall, they continued to kiss, everything else around them ceased to exist.
