Who Are You revisited

Postby Dr.G » Wed Feb 14, 2001 8:36 pm

WooHoo to the BBC!!!
Tonight I got to watch Who Are You for the second time. The BBC just aired it, and I tell you I had some serious fears they would censor the Flaming O Spell. But bless auntie beebs, she did not! (Editing to add: Ham has rightly pointed out that they cut the 'driving stick' comment by Faith, my brain did not register that, silly me.)

Anyway I decided to start a new thread about it as it is such an important episode for Willow and Tara. It is right up there with Hush, NMR and Family in my opinion. There are some very important developements for our witches:

Tara confesses to Willow that she is hers.
The orgasmic Flaming O Spell.
Tara finally meets the scoobies.

I have some questions for you all:

Were you all aware of the nature of their relationship or where it was heading before this episode?
And what did you *think* when you saw that Flaming O Spell?
And lastly, am I the only one who watched that one frame by fame?

I was aware (or at least wishful*G*) of a W/T romantic relationship from the laundry romm scene in "Hush" (I tried to start a thread about it, but noboby's nibbled yet*lonely sigh*).

I fell off the couch and squealed in delight at the flaming "o" spell.

And yes, not only did I watch it frame by frame (a lovely way to spend a bachelorette Valentine's Day, BTW), but I also made all the membners of my coven watch it frame by frame (most of them don't even watch TV) and then asked them why we don't do spells like that!

Were you all aware of the nature of their relationship or where it was heading before this episode?

--- Oh yes!!! Love was so ...THERE. So much sparkage between them.

And what did you *think* when you saw that Flaming O Spell?

--- where can I get that book?

And lastly, am I the only one who watched that one frame by fame?
--- well I would have if my VCR had that capability. So I am right there with ya.

Yes, finally it airs on the BBC. I wonder if there were people left who didn't know about w/t over there.

Were you all aware of the nature of their relationship or where it was heading before this episode?
I totally was. I of course was spoiled by writer's comments. But, I also saw instant chemistry in Hush.

And what did you *think* when you saw that Flaming O Spell?
I tell you what I posted to bob at the cross and stake. I saw an ASF video of it on sundays in the old slayme days. Anyway, I posted, if this is subtext, who needs main text.

And lastly, am I the only one who watched that one frame by fame?
Doesn't everyone watch everything frame by frame? How else can you catch finger holds and what not.

Okay, I will answer myself now:

The first time I saw this episode was about 9 months ago. At that time I was aware that Willow was going to be romantically involved with Tara. I had not figured this out on my own I am ashamed to say (Blind fool that I was!). NMR had already aired in the US and I had read a news letter that said Willow confessed her feelings for Tara to Buffy. Other than that I was unspoiled.

My interest was awakened by that piece of news however, so I payed close attention to Willow and Tara the first time I saw the episode. By this time I already cared for Tara (I did not like her at first, but I started to feel for her during TIIT when Willow hurt her feelings).
So when Tara turned her head and said "I am you know"........"Yours", I was glued to the screen and I melted on the spot. (I did miss Willow touching Tara's knee at the beginning of that scene though, the first time around. That was the moment I fell in love with their relationship.

The scene in the Bronze between Faith and Tara was both amusing and very painful to watch. Faith saw at once what I myself, and the scoobies did not see until it was pointed out to them.

And then there was the Flaming O Spell. What can I say? Never have I been so (pleasantly) surprised and shocked by a scene. I nearly fell out of my seat at watching Willow coming there. That was and still is the sexiest scene I have *ever* seen (and on dutch television when it comes to sex literally *nothing* is left to the imagination). My rewatching it ten times just now, only reaffirms that opinion.

From this episode on I was hooked on Willow and Tara and it has only gotten worse (in a good way).

Btw, I love Faith, in spite of what she did to Tara. At the end she could have gotten on that plane and left, but she did not. She went to that church and risked it all, thus proving the goodness still inside of her. I hope she comes back soon, not on Angel, but on Buffy.

I must admit I did know that there was going to be something between Willow and Tara before the episodes aired, but I was still surprised by the flaming-o. I guess I wasn't sure how far Joss would take it, but that whole ep was amazing. It really brought everything out in the open and gave me such hope for the future of the relationship.
As for the last question, my tape has become a little worn.

I feel a little sorry for people who only watch Buffy on the BEEB. They cut the "So Willow's not driving stick anymore" comment and that whole scene really didn't make a lot of sense. Infact they cut all sexual references, I didn't realise how many there were in the ep until last night.

They cut that? I had not even noticed that, where was I? I am an ass, I will rewatch it now, I guess I was only paying attention to the Flamey O Spell. What odd people at the BBC, they aired that spell, but not that driving stick comment, hehehe, very smart.

Well, there is the (I assume) uncut version airing Friday night. I will tape that one as well then. Thank you for pointing this out to me.

Were you all aware of the nature of their relationship or where it was heading before this episode?

I was told by a reader of an article of mine that there was supposed to be some same-sex subtext going on with Willow. So I sat down, fought over the remote with my mother, and tuned in to "Who Are You?" I was just sitting there with my jaw in my lap after the flaming O, and my mom was asking me if it was supposed to be maintext or subtext (oh, yes, I trained her well with my Xena obsession- my mom can pick up on any subtext now). WAY was the first ep I'd seen in months.

And what did you *think* when you saw that Flaming O Spell?

Jaw in lap...

And lastly, am I the only one who watched that one frame by fame?

LOL I would have if I could

Ok....I have to admit...I wasn't really that big of a fan before "Hush." I kind of half-ass watched BTVS. I watched when I remembered to...or if I remembered to tape it if I was at work. Now to answer the questions.

As soon as I saw Willow and Tara use their magic to move the soda machine.....I knew it!
I even said something to my gf that night!

There were no words to describe my reaction when I saw the flaming O spell.

I always watch every ep frame by frame....I want to be able to know and remember everything exactly.

OMG I just watched that ep last night.

This ep was the first to have plenty of W/T moments, it was amazing.

Now for your questions…

Were you all aware of the nature of their relationship or where it was heading before this episode?
Oh hell yeah!…I noticed “something” when they first saw each other at the Wicca meeting, then when they joined hands to move the soda machine but it was the scene where they talked at the end of Hush that I “knew” something was going to happen

And what did you *think* when you saw that Flaming O Spell?
OH…MY…GOD

And lastly, am I the only one who watched that one frame by fame?
Didn’t everyone do that?

I first saw 'Who Are You' after it aired on Sky last year. Prior to this ep, I thought that there was some serious chemistry going on between W/T. And then when I saw the ep, I thought "Whoa, there's really something happening here." To be honest, I was amazed that they could get away with showing the flaming O spell as it was SO erotic. And the 'not driving stick anymore' line is one of my favourite pieces of dialogue, ever. I have to admit that I really didn't like Faith for being so mean to Tara, and then when she tortured Wesley (my favourite character on 'Angel'), I liked her even less. But by the end of 'Sanctuary', I saw that she was willing to redeem herself, and I realised what a fascinating & complex character she is.
I have to admit, however, that I didn't become a totally obsessed W/T shipper till 'Superstar', but that's a whole other story...

I knew that they were going to become romantically involved as soon as I saw the chemistry between them while moving the soda machine. It was so powerful.

And what did you *think* when you saw that Flaming O Spell?

Fantastic!!!!

And lastly, am I the only one who watched that one frame by fame?

Doesn't everyone.

Hey everyone,

Were you all aware of the nature of their relationship or where it was heading before this episode?

Yep, I was spoiled before 'Hush' aired on Sky over here. Shameless, me. The people I watched it with weren't, though...

And what did you *think* when you saw that Flaming O Spell?

Two responses.
Outwardly: A strangled squeak, a disbelieving stare. I knew Will & Tara were canonically "romantic", I *didn't* know about the Flaming O before I saw it.
Inwardly: "That's supposed to be subtext!?!?!" (Followed by: "Why has this never happened on Xena??")

Incidentally, my non-spoiled (and, AFAIK, entirely str8) friends spotted the implications immediately too....

By "Who Are You?" I had no doubts whatsoever about how Tara felt about Willow. Everything that happened in the Bronze simply confirmed that to me (Tara did act like someone caught).

The only thing that worried me about the Flaming O Spell (my initial reaction being "Wow! That's one way past the censors!) was whether Tara was being set up for heartbreak. My fear was that Willow, being young enough to perhaps make such mistakes, might freak when Tara moved from "spells" to "More than spells."

But considering it, my fears went away. In fact, the more I thought about it, the more it seemed like a natural progression of Willow falling in love with a fellow Witch.

Oh, and I do have this image in my head of Willow starting to pester Tara for any more really intense spells she might know...

Were you all aware of the nature of their relationship or where it was heading before this episode? yes. also read it one of the sci-fi mags. (forgot w/c one, but i know it's fr the UK... like TV Zone or somethin') Aly was interviewed and said Willow's character will be gay. so i got the idea of what's to come.

And what did you *think* when you saw that Flaming O Spell? my heart was beatin' fast! and both of their breathing is kinda contagious...heh.heh.

And lastly, am I the only one who watched that one frame by fame? you are not alone!

Well yeah because i had read spoilers. hehe, my bad.

And what did you *think* when you saw that Flaming O Spell?
I was actually pretty suprised that it got past the censors. After it was over i needed a cigarette hehe.

And lastly, am I the only one who watched that one frame by fame?
I haven't watched it frame by frame *yet*. I'll have to put that on my 'to do' list.

the flaming o spell *rocked my world*. WAY was the first w/t ep i ever saw. i especially ordered it on video so that i could watch that scene, and it was everything i'd hoped to see and more. i'm sure if you'd been watching me watch that scene, you would have seen my eyes go wide as saucers and heard me start to pant just like willow and tara were.

not only was it a damn cool looking spell, but it was like...pure sex! amazing! i couldn't wait to get my hands on more w/t eps after that. not to mention wanting to get my hands on some um, "other things" as well...

I remember the first time I saw the flaming o spell..I'd been out the night before in Blackpool and was supposed to be going to visit my parents in Wales the next day.

I dashed home to Manchester to watch Buffy (spoiled as I was) before going off to Wales. When I saw the spell I had a huge rush of feeling inside me, it was so sensual and explicit. Even now, watching it back frame by frame (oh yes) makes me all shivery and warm....it's quite the most sexual thing I've seen without actually watching sex...

I just know she likes Willow, and she already has one of those.

I just watched Who Are You again on the BBC, including "driving stick" this time. But before the it started the lady who tells you what the episode is about said:

"Will Willow's secret love be reciprocated?"

Somehow that put a big smile on my face, and of course then I yelled at my television "Hell YES!!!"
And then I watched that yes ten times frame by frame again (I am so glad that I am not alone in this)...

Anyhow, just a final question (I assume this has been discussed before, but I wasn't here then):
Did you all notice when Faith is dancing at the Bronze with a bunch of guys, she also dances rather non-platonically with a girl? Not really important maybe, but I had not noticed before and it amused me.
