Just for fun: a little Amber competition

Postby Still Waters Run Deep » Sat Feb 16, 2002 5:26 am

I was so impressed by Ambers singing abilities on OMWF I spent the last couple of days musing on what songs would make a great Amber Benson Album.
So with no more ado Still Waters Enterprises presents: 'Amber Benson the Album'

Under your spell - Joss Whedon
Bless the weather - John Martyn
Who knows where the time goes - Sandy Denny
Way to Blue - Nick Drake
She calls out your name - Beth Orton
Goodbye - Steve Earl / Emmylou Harris
Lost [her] in the sun - nanci Griffith
Cry me a River - Julie London
Stay with me 'til Dawn - Julie Tzuke
Stolen car - Beth Orton

So, Kitties your task for today is put together your perfect Amber Album, with due thought to her singing style, what suits her etc. 'Under your Spell' is a compulsory track and lets keep it to around 10 - 12 tracks.

I'll leave it to Xita to decide whether this is a thread on its own [pleeze, pretty pleeze X ]

Oh, and does anyone know where I can download the 'Under your spell' scene/song?

An Amber Benson album. Hmmmmm........

Well, she could sing just about anything in the folksong/folkpop/folkrock repertoire--so anything that, say, Judy Collins would sing, or Peter, Paul and Mary, Weavers, etc. etc.

In the classical song repertoire, she could probably do some interesting things with--

Handel: "Where e're You Walk"
Beethoven: "Adelaide"
Schubert: "Du bist die Ruh"
Brahms: "Wie bist du meine Koenigin"
Mozart: "Voi che sapete"
and many others.

She could probably do some wonderful things with the classic "turn-of-the-century" American songs, such as "Come Down My Evenin' Star", "Love's Old Sweet Song", or "On The Banks of the Wabash".

Oh, and I'd just love to hear her sing "I Dream Of Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair" .
------------------------------------------
Where e'er you walk,
Cool gales shall fan the glade.
Trees where you sit,
Shall crowd into a shade.
Where e'er you step,
The blushing flow'rs shall rise,
And all things flourish
Before your eyes.

words by Alexander Pope; music by Handel

There's just one song that keeps running through my head! Kate Bush's "Strange Phenomena". Amber has the range for the high notes and the words are perfect!
"Soon it will be the phase of the moon when people tune in......We raise our hats to the strange phenomena, soul birds of a feather flock together" Very mystical!

sandy denny! omg! "who knows where the time goes" would be SO perfect for amber's vocal range.
plus, it does fit a dream i had a couple of nights ago that had me discussing OMWF with joss whedon. i know, i know. but it was funny, in a pathetic kind of way. if you know what i mean (probably not)

This is a fun idea, but I have to say that my perfect Amber album would contain songs she wrote herself, or that were written for her (I'd be most happy to help in that regard).

I also have to say that I really really wish she would record something. The timbre of her voice is so lovely; I think she could easily be one of my favorite vocalists.

BTW the Beth Orton song is "She Cries Your Name". Although now I am singing "Stolen Car" (really good song) and thinking that the opening lines remind me of W/T in OAFA...You walked into my house last night/I couldn't help but notice/A light that was long gone still burning strong.

Yes indeed.

Hey I'm glad some have you have latched onto my faves. I sometimes wonder whether anyone else shares my tastes

As for Amber writing her own songs, I believe she is capable of just about anything in her chosen fields.
I downloaded 'under your spell' and am still quite stunned as to how good Ambers voice is, her range, intonation, timbre, dynamics, timing, its all there. Just think what she would be like if she put some time into honing it. I really know nothing about singing, I cant sing to save my life, but I know enough to spot real quality when I hear it.

Edited to add: Thanks to Oncemore.. for the download links

The best song for Tara as a character would have to be.
The time when Glory sucked her brain.
The perfect song would have been....

"Kylie - Can't Get You Outta My Head" :-)

I'd give good money to hear Amber singing any of the 'girl' songs from Schoolhouse Rocks.

'Cuz I'm weird like that.

Ooh ... I'd love to hear Amber-versions of some of these. I hope not too many of them are obscure...

SIDE A
"Under Your Spell" -- JOSS WHEDON
"I Be Your Mirror" -- VELVET UNDERGROUND
"Something Going On" -- FRIDA LYNSTAD
"Don't Give Up" -- KATE BUSH / PETER GABRIEL
"Drive" -- THE CARS
"Perfect Day" -- LOU REED

SIDE B
"The Last Goodbye" -- JEFF BUCKLEY
"Be Still My Beating Heart" -- STING
"Hands" -- JEWEL
"Dreams" -- HEART
"Simoom" -- THE CREATURES
"Hallelujah" -- JEFF BUCKLEY

Anthony Stewart Head would be required for the duel in track 4, of course.

Ooh, this is a toughie. I had to go away and have a think about it. I definitely agree with the choice of Beth Orton, but I'd probably go for a different song from her first album.
Some other random songs I'd love to hear Amber sing:
* 'Who Cares?' - Gershwin
* Just about anything by Aimee Mann, but particularly 'Deathly'
* 'Marlene on the Wall' - Suzanne Vega
* 'Blue' - Lucinda Wiliams
* 'Your Ghost' - Kristin Hersh
* 'It's Oh So Quiet' - just b/c I'd love to see how her interpretation would differ from that of Bjork.
* 'The Boys in the Backroom', as sung by Marlene Dietrich in 'Destry Rides Again' (and if she could do the dancing-on-a-bar-while-dressed-in-a-corset thing too, it would doubtless be much appreciated. )
And I just got hold of Tanya Donnelly's new album, 'beautysleep'. Some of the lyrics are really excellent, and I'd love to hear Amber sing them:
From 'Keeping You':
quote:
I'm keeping you, I'm keeping you
I'm keeping you, so settle in now

My return to wildlife by satellite
by beautiful moon-shining girl
whether by hard ground or splashdown
we're safely back in the world

My heart's not new
I'm not like you
I've loved and been loved well and badly too
My body's been through everything
I've used and been used
I got over it.

From 'The Storm':

quote:
When I stumble
it will be under your spell, at your command
and when I stumble
it will be into your hand.

Anyway, great thread!

Thanks Tyche.

It's interesting that most have come up with the folk/rock/pop style a'la under your spell, but is that is 'her' style?
I wonder what Amber would come up with, obviously something by Jeff Buckley, but I'm thinking female artists. We should ask her

Glad you chose Beth Orton, her being an East Anglian lass and all.

I'd love to hear her do something sultry and classic. Kinda torchsongy. Or maybe even something by Cole Porter (Night and Day, perhaps.)

Either that or something modern and very indie. Something sorta like Veruca's music.

Different styles, but both very soulful.
