Does Willow have a middle name?????

Postby BabyWillow81 » Wed Feb 20, 2002 9:10 pm

A freind of mine and I were recently discussing buffy episodes, and the question came up 'Whats willows middle name?'.

We couldn't remember infact we began questioning the fact if Willow had a middle name at all.

Other characters in the show such as Buffy and xander have middle names, So I was wondering does willow have a middle name?

Did they maybe mention it in season 5, maybe in checkpoint? Cause they mentioned several other middle names in that episode.

Can anyone help...whats willows middle name or is she just sadly middle nameless......?

I don't know... I'm trying to get caught up on buffy episodes and i've never heard her middle name. Which poses another question... if she doesn't have one what kind of middle name she we give her? something mystical or just something ordinary ya know? Oh well just my additional thoughts

Tara does not have a middle name.

Willow has never had a middle name on the show, books, comics, etc.

The only place she does is in a deleted scene of an early draft of a script, escapes my mind right now. They say it is Danielle.

I, too, asked this question myself. I've yet to see any reference to Willow's (or Tara's) middle name. in two of my stories, I've given them the middle initials "D." and "J." respectively.

Of course, with the exception of Buffy (Anne) and Xander (Lavelle) (oh, and Anya, but that may have been made up for the Council's benefit), we don't know the middle names of most of the characters. In the interests of keeping my nerd credentials, here is my totally non-definite list:

Willow Danielle Rosenberg
Tara Jeanette Maclay
Rupert Sheridan Giles
Dawn Elizabeth Summers
Daniel James Osbourne
Cordelia Catherine Chase
Wesley McTavish Wyndham-Price
Charles Nathaniel Gunn
Winifred Louise Burkle
Andrew Riley Finn
(interestingly, I've decided the dear boy opted to go by his middle name. Don't know why...)

Please shred these at your leisure...

Danielle? Why that's kind of cute. It suits her.

xita, is that a "Tara does not have a middle name - fact", or "Tara does not have a middle name, 'cause it's never mentioned."?

I seem to remember Joss talking about names at one point, but I can't remember whether he said anything about middle names. Of course, it says more about their aged P's, than the characters, unless they choose to use them as a preference (I liked your idea of Riley's being a middle name, Murdock. Yep, he looks more like an Andrew, doesn't he? I have a cousin called Andrew, and he lives up to his name).

I have a game ...

Next time ``Tabula Rasa'' airs, let's play tape-it-and-freeze-frame-a-lot-to-see-if-we-get-a-good-shot-of-their-student-ID-cards. In this case one of those fancy VCRs with ``frame advance'' might help. TiVo would be great, too.

I'm pretty sure Tara holds hers up to the camera; not too sure about Will, though.

Edited to add: Xita, I was bored and curious, so I looked up the Danielle thing, and word on the (Usenet) street is that it's from a ``Bad Girls'' draft, and it's actually kind of a funny line.

Squint really hard and it's almost readable, but I don't think there's a middle name on there.

Danielle!? That's great! And not just because it's my name!

Danielle translates to "judged by god." I could see her parents knowing this.

So now all the empathy I feel for Willow is explained, as well as this strong fixation I have for Tara.

In case anyone's wants it here's the line where Willow says her middle name is Danielle:

BUFFY: I know, Will, and that's exactly why
I don't want you coming. It's too dangerous.

WILLOW: But, I've done this sort of thing before. Like a million times. And, if my parents hadn't settled on "Danielle," Danger would be my middle name, and besides ...(holds up bag) Minty fresh protection. So?

While it appears an early draft of the shooting script it does not mean it is her middle name. It was deleted, it didn't air, it could be a sign that the writer's decided it didn't suit her. I don't think of it as her middle name because it doesn't appear anywhere else. Also, maybe they don't have middle names? It happens.

I disagree. All Americans have between one and two middle names when born. Now sometimes things happen to those names, accidents and the like, leaving an individual with no middle name, but such instances are rare. My grandfather claimed to have no middle name, but I'm pretty sure he had one; it just got old and fell off.

I've been afraid to say this for a while...it's so embarrassing. But I feel that you all have to know:

I don't have a middle name.

Yes, I've been that way since I was born.

Okay, I feel all better now that I'm out of the closet

So, it's Willow Danielle Rosenberg. Wonder what Tara's is, if any?

Speaking of names, it's interesting that our gals are named Willow and Tara. Tara is the goddess of compassion in Tibetan Buddhism and the willow tree is a medicinal plant.

That's okay, Bernium, we're not here to judge.

Anyhoo...middle names in my family. Strange things. For example, my maternal grandfather went by his middle name (which is also my middle name; we tend to pass down middle names in my family rather than first/given/Christian names). My mother also went mostly by her middle name from the time she was a kid, and when she got married she dropped the first name entirely.

My cousin has no middle name. Her mother (my mom's sister) I am not sure if she has one or not.

My son (CaptMurdock Jr.) has a middle name derived from my uncle's first name. I thought of giving him my uncle's middle name, but it just didn't quite work.

Anyway, enough about me. Yes, it's entirely possible that Tara has no middle name. I mean, how many "Tara Maclay"'s could there be?

Eh. I guess I agree with Zully. Lots of things appear in scripts, and while they're interesting, if they get cut and never make it to air, then they really sort of drop out of the universe. There's so much authorized Buffy material out there, novels, comics, guidebooks, the series itself of course, I just can't really get behind Danielle as a canonical middle name if it's never actually been used. It's a perfectly pretty name, but until they actually attach it to Willow somewhere official...

LOL!
You make it sound as if his middle name was an appendage.

I see Willow's parents as the type to either not give her one or give her three or more middle names seeing as the name "Willow" is in itself an unique choice.quote:

I Denmark, where I'm from, we don't pass over first name to our children, like for example in US. It's more likely to have a family middle-name, which is more like an after-name. But most people don't have a middle-name at all.
So I think it's about where you live in the world, and what the traditions are...

Well, my uncles’ wife and stepson are from Java (Indonesia) and not only do they not have middle names there, they don't have last names either. On both of their birth certificates it just has their first names and that's it! They both find it strange that their last name is now Williams

During the 1980's, many Americans had only one name as well. Actress Robey is perhaps the most famous example of this, but some lesser-known entertainers, such as ``Madonna'', followed suit. During the 90's, some, such as 227's Jackée, chose to add an additional last name, while others, such as , chose to completely eliminate alphabetic characters from their names.

I don't have a middle name either, although that is quite common in Germany where I am from originally. However, my first and last name are so awfully long (rarely fit in official forms) that my parents showed some mercy and abstained from giving me a middle name in addition.

Okay, so I stared at Tara's ID for a while (thanks, j_uk) and think the name is located right under the picture in the bottom left corner of the ID. Judging from the height of the letters, it is a rather short name. Ergo, I don't think there is a middle name. Keep in mind an additional name does not only take space for the letters but also additional space between the words.

Wish we could get a clear look at that ID. I'm just really curious to know if any info beyond what we have is on there.

And just to be clear, we don't know for a fact whether Tara does or does not have a middle name. Even if there's no middle name or even initial on the ID, she could still have one.

Ever have one of those moments where you have to forcibly remind yourself that these people are fictional? Just had one.

My brother and I don't have middle names and we were always told that it was because a middle name is the name you recieve when you're christened (baptised) and we weren't. This from the Ukrainian Orthodox side of the family. All my catholic friends (ie most of the lesbians I know ROFL) have 2 middle names - one from christening and one from confirmation. Of course they've all changed their names from Mary and Therese to Boudicca, Juno and Morgan etc.
