Top 40 Buffy Episodes Of All Time

Well, I don't have specific suggestions this second but I just had to respond and say Wow! You obviously put a ton of work into that. It's really well thought-out. Broadly looking it over, it seems really inclusive and the episodes I looked for were in about the right place

Good job! I probably shouldn't make specific suggestions anyway, seeing as I haven't actually seen enough of the episodes to make a terribly good judgement. I just wanted to give you some positive feedback. That's a great list! Can't wait to see other people's thoughts.

ooh, one suggestion: should Tabula Rasa go on that list somewhere? I consider it at least as good as Something Blue and BBB for comedic wonky-magic fun (although it is, of course, more than just that, like the other eps mentioned)

One other question: When you say "important," what exactly are we choosing for? It could include the most innovative episodes (the reason for Restless and The Wish on the list), the ones with most effect on the characters and mythology of the show (the season finales, say, and Bad Girls, etc.), the ones which touch on intriguing issues (e.g. Earshot)

or it could just mean which ones we think were the most well-done and enjoyable, for all of the reasons above? I'm curious.

I think I am possibly the only person who hates Becoming (both parts). That makes me sad.

They just didn't impress me. At all. When they play them on FX, I watch but it's just not as fun.

And Something Blue should be higher on the list because that was one kickass episode.

wow!! how long did that take you?! i would definately put OMWF a few slots higher, mostly because it was very inventive and we get ambervoice AND *floating* (!!!).
thanks for posting the top 40 though, that must have been a tough job.

Great list, you must have spent a lot of time on it. I'm sure it will inspire great debate. I just have one question- what about New Moon Rising? Willow chooses to stay with Tara rather than get back together with Oz & outs herself to Buffy. Also, Riley accepts that not all demons are "evil" and chooses to save Oz, who he has just met, from the Initiative- thereby losing his career and military "family".

Yeah,great list,but I agree NMR should be on there somewhere. Otherwise,I pretty much agree with the episode standings,the Body prob being the most important,and Hush prob being my personal favorite. And to echo everyone else,damn that must have taken a long time to figger out!

Family should be up there too.

If so that would be my top 40.

On a top 40 list there will be lots of different opinionions and variation of both content and order of preference but if you narrow it down to a top 5 or 10 I'm pretty sure most of the same eps would appear on most lists, though the order may still vary due to personal tastes.

What i did was highlight the most important episodes on Buffy, including Tuba Rusa, Family, New Moon Rising, Wild At Heart, Anne, Ted, and Nightmares. I had to trim down to 40 so they got cut out, if it was a top 50 they would of been on but a top 50 list would be too much for a show that only has 115 episodes so far.

My favourite episode ever is Tough love and that's not on the list either.

I have too say though that for decisions made in the episodes NMR should at least have made it into the top 20 part.

I've only seen 8 episodes of Season 6, and I've not seen about half of Season 2. (Must get myself the boxset...)

1. The Gift
2. The Body
3. Once More, With Feeling
4. Graduation Day - Part 2
5. Hush
6. Superstar
7. Bargaining (Both parts... is that allowed?)
8. Doppelgangland - Willow in leather... yummy...
9. Triangle
10. Prophecy Girl

11. Tabula Rasa
12. Tough Love
13. Fool For Love
14. The Wish
15. Restless
16. New Moon Rising
17. Spiral
18. Family
19. No Place Like Home
20. Graduation Day - Part 1

21. Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered
22. The Replacement
23. Where the Wild Things Are
24. Blood Ties
25. Becoming - Part 2
26. Gingerbread
27. Who Are You
28. I Only Have Eyes For You"
29. Earshot
30. Forever

31. Nightmares
32. This Year's Girl
33. Fear, Itself
34. Intervention
35. Innocence
36. Passion
37. Something Blue
38. Buffy v.s. Dracula
39. Into The Woods
40. The Harsh Light Of Day

Oh, I agree about Becoming being overrated. I liked the second part, but the first part wasn't great.

PProbably done before but, when confined to five, and i mean 5 (lol) what would you choose as the ebst? Which 5 Buffy eps would you take to the desert island with you? You can count two-part stories as one choice as long as they are officialy labelled as such. Here are mine in desending order!

5. Graduation Day Part 1 & 2
4. The Body
3. Hush
2. The Wish
*1. Once More, With Feeling

There ya go, what about YOU?

Well this is a timely thread. A group of my non-Buffy watching friends (I don't know why I hang out with them either) has agreed to give me a Saturday afternoon to convince them of the greatness that is BTVS. They have agreed to watch 6 episodes.

I've been trying to select those episodes which provide general background information, yet also stand on their own in terms of plot. Of course something that shows the pure genius of the writers and actors is equally important.

Hush and The Body seem like locks to me but as for the other four, I'm still somewhat undecided.

Of to peruse the thread.

6 eps huh? Well my top 6 would be 1- The body 2- Hush 3- Dopplegangland 4- OMWF 5- Graduation day 1&2 (does that count as 1 ep?), and The wish.
Whatever you choose as your 6 I'd recommend showing The Body last. It's just so stunning and sets the bar so high you really wouldn't want to put it before any other episode for newbies to the series.

Edit. PS. Nice to see another Canadian in here.

Thanks for your suggestions Incarnadine. I don't think I can get away with showing a two parter as one ep. I hadn't actually considered Graduation Day 1 and 2. I think maybe I need to watch them again to refresh my memory.

As for OMWF, i think it was truely brilliant but hesitate to include it. Musicals are usually something a show does when they have an established audience, one that knows what's going on and is willing to go out on that limb with them. Given, Joss did an outstanding job but I think that was because the songs weren't just songs, they were arc advancing instruments. That and the levitation.

Hmmm, perhaps if accompanied by the right selection of episodes. It's something to noodle.

Oh and I raise my home grown canadian beer to my fellow canuck.

Hmmm. The top 5 or 6. It all depends on whether you are choosing yor favourites or trying to turn someone on to the goodness that is Buffy.

I must admit that when it comes to faves I like to stick to the stand alones that may just advance the plot, but dont have to. They exist in parallel to the main storyline, but also have to integrate into it somehow, without it being obvious.
So my top five would be:

5. One more with feeling.. for the sheer chutzpa of it more than anything. Its still too fresh in my mind otherwise
4. The Body..... for acting excellence and for coming at what is a taboo subject from an entirely new direction, with honesty.
3. Restless...for providing 2 years of speculation for kitties everywhere, and for Amber, the enigmatic.
2. Dopplegangland... for Aly's performance, more than anything, but I liked the storyline too. Honest
1. Hush....goundbreaking, bold, well acted, with the all time creepiest 'hide-behind-the settee' baddies ever. And we got to see Tara.

There are others, NMR, the Gift, Anne [no.6]which I can watch over and over, but mostly for specific scenes, bits or even just looks [I am you know] which make you want to hit the replay time and time again.

Mind you by the end of S6, I'll have changes my mind again

Hi everyone. It's been 3 months since my last post since my phone has been disconnected. I miss you all.

Anyway, these would have to be my favorite episodes:

1) Once more, with feeling- Tara, Spike, and Giles sexy goodness. Brilliant episode.
2) Dead Things- dark and disturbing. Just the way I like them.
3) Fool For Love- I love '70s Spike. The fight sequence on the subway was way cool.
4) Tabula Rasa- "Willow. What a funny name." "I think its pretty."smile "Ready Randy?" "Ready Joan."snerk. Oh, and I took the Giles/skeleton battle as a shoutout to Army of Darkness. Love Bruce Campbell.
5) The Wish- vamp Willow. 'nuff said

Boy, that was hard.

4. Dopplegangland (S3)
3. The Gift (S5)
2. The Body (S5)
1. The Wish (S3)

Well I'll tell you there is no way The Gift is better than OMWF. Sorry.. no. no way.

Also some choices are weird, obviously kittens will want to see NMR and Family but the one that is glaring at me is Tabula Rasa, much better than half the episodes listed on your list. Anyway, you'll probably find a lot of disagreement I don't think there can be an ultimate Buffy list that pleases many.

Well OMWF would probably be in the top ten. Top five even. It was just you know, all rounded and too good to not be included.

3. The Gift (S5)
2. The Body (S5)

Top 40 Buffy Episodes Of All Time

Postby Dr.G » Sat Feb 23, 2002 10:37 am

Oh I just counted them, there are 42 episodes with Willow and Tara in them. Oh yeah, in no particular order:

Season Four

1. ep 10 :: Hush
2. ep 12 :: A New Man
3. ep 13 :: The 'I' in Team
4. ep 14 :: Goodbye Iowa
5. ep 15 :: This Year's Girl
6. ep 16 :: Who Are You
7. ep 17 :: Superstar
8. ep 18 :: Where the Wild Things Are
9. ep 19 :: New Moon Rising
10. ep 20 :: The Yoko Factor
11. ep 21 :: Primeval
12. ep 22 :: Restless

Season Five

13. ep 01 :: Buffy vs. Dracula
14. ep 02 :: Real Me
15. ep 04 :: Out of My Mind
16. ep 06 :: Family
17. ep 08 :: Shadow
18. ep 09 :: Listening to Fear
19. ep 11 :: Triangle
20. ep 12 :: Checkpoint
21. ep 13 :: Blood Ties
22. ep 14 :: Crush
23. ep 15 :: I Was Made To Love You
24. ep 16 :: The Body
25. ep 17 :: Forever
26. ep 18 :: Intervention
27. ep 19 :: Tough Love
28. ep 20 :: Spiral
29. ep 21 :: Weight of the World
30. ep 22 :: The Gift

Season Six

31. ep 01 :: Bargaining, part 1
32. ep 02 :: Bargaining, part 2
33. ep 03 :: After Life
34. ep 04 :: Flooded
35. ep 05 :: Life Serial
36. ep 06 :: All The Way
37. ep 07 :: Once More, With Feeling
38. ep 08 :: Tabula Rasa
39. ep 09 :: Smashed
40. ep 10 :: Wrecked
41. ep 13 :: Dead Things
42. ep 14 :: Older and Far Away

Discounting Wrecked and Smashed, for being too highly W/T angsty for me, the rest (which would be 40) actually are my favourites, heh heh, even the ones W/T are only in for a few minutes.

*editing to add: I really mean it when I say these are my favourite eps, I am very biased and unobjective, but I also posted this as a list to show what episodes Willow and Tara have been in. (I used Adrienne's Extra Flamey's caps section.) And the list will grow.

Top 40 Buffy Episodes Of All Time

Postby xita » Sat Feb 23, 2002 10:46 am

Well I'll tell you there is no way The Gift is better than OMWF. Sorry.. no. no way.

Also some choices are weird, obviously kittens will want to see NMR and Family but the one that is glaring at me is Tabula Rasa, much better than half the episodes listed on your list. Anyway, you'll probably find a lot of disagreement I don't think there can be an ultimate Buffy list that pleases many.

*edited to add Tough Love a must!!

On a top 40 list there will be lots of different opinionions and variation of both content and order of preference but if you narrow it down to a top 5 or 10 I'm pretty sure most of the same eps would appear on most lists, though the order may still vary due to personal tastes.

I had to trim down to 40 so they got cut out, if it was a top 50 they would of been on but a top 50 list would be too much for a show that only has 115 episodes so far.

I so agree about New moon rising, I mean that episode had me holding my breath and a box of tissues dang near the whole time!! I mean most of us have been in that situation you know....You find somthing new that you really love , but the thing you wanted most of all comes back to you..the only one true love youve surely known.....then theres this huge hard decision, and luckily...Willow made the right decison.

Cause you know some of us dont at first, and it takes us a couple of tries...by then thank goddess , that girl reallyloves you cause shes still there ya' know. Ok sorry went into a bit fo a personal ramble..

Anyway, Family was also an awesome episode which truly developed some of taras character and took a lil' of taras mystery away. Then who could forget WIllows"See and thats why youre a dummy.." line? It was such a cute heart melter....and hellow they floated when they danced!! Like that wasnt cool!

But for serious story and content meaning during family you realised how important tara was to the entire gang , not just to Willow. I think this was the true importance of the episode .

HERES MY TOP 6

Drumroll pleeeasseee........*ahem* ready, ok here it goes, Ive chosen one epi from each season

6.NIGHTMARES S.1 ep.10
5.Passion S.2 ep.17
4. Homecoming S.3 ep.5
3. Hush s.4 ep.10
2. The BODY S.5 ep.16
1. Wrecked S.6 ep.11

There you go,

------------------
When the officer says

"Gee mam.....Your eyes look red, Have you been drinking?"

You probably shouldn't respond with,

"Gee officer your eyes look glazed, have you been eating doughnuts?" :D

Trust me its a very very bad idea.......quote:

If you need to convince people that Buffy is a good show with 6 episodes they would have to be

1 and 2. Welcome to the hellmouth/The harvest-You need to show the series premire so they could understand the show. It's a great episode anyway so why not show it?

3. The Prophecy Girl-After the series premire show this episode and it will show them how the whole "master" thing was resolved. Great episode, and Buffy speech was so good.

4.Dopplegangland or Earshot-You need to show a good stand alone episode

5.Hush-I don't think anyone you was trying to make someone a buffy fan would skip this episode!

6.The Body-You have to show this one! No one will take their eyes off the screen!

I hope i helped. If you don't pick those, just don't pick ones that they won't understand like "Restless" or "Becomming" because you would of had to be watching the show for a long time to understand them.

In terms of introducing people to Buffy, I'd say this is a pretty good list with some really good logic.

I guess it also depends if you're intoducing it because they know you watch it and are curious or if you're trying to defend yourself. If you're trying to defend yourself, or rather if I was trying to defend myself, I would pick (in no particular order):

1. Hush
2. The Body
3. Tabula Rasa
4. Triangle or The Wish
5. Dopplegangland
6. OMWF

I know people always say musicals are risky, especially for those that aren't fans, but I think if a show gives you a musical, supports the reason for it well and does a good job, it should work out all right.
I do agree with whoever said show The Body last. Not only is it a fantastic episode, but its also kind of emotionally draining.

In terms of W/T, how can you chose just one?

------------------
Kind of an unusual name. There's hardly any except Warren Beatty and, you know, President Harding. It's probably not either of them.
