Travel

Hi,

I looked around the board and couldn't find anything about this topic and I think it can be really useful and cool.

So a bunch of us Kittens are from all around the world and I'm sure most of us like to travel a bit. So I thought it would be nice if there was a place on the board where people can say the best place they have traveled to.

Or better yet kittens can ask questions about a country and people that have traveled there or that live there can give all the good tips and tricks of the area.

I am going to travel to Thailand in March/April and was wondering if anyone knows any good "off the beaten path" type places to go? (An example of a good thing to know while in Thailand... no badmouthing the king, it can earn you up to 15 years in jail!)

so lets start throwing out names of other countries :)

I always have the idea that I haven't been in that many places, sadly enough. We used to go on a lot of vacations within the country when I was a kid, because my parents didn't have a lot of money. Oh I live in the Netherlands by the way, so I did see a lot of my country. Ehm the places that I did travel too outside of the Netherlands, were amazing. I went to Barcelona, Prague and these cities are very beautiful and impressive. I am deeply in love with Barcelona.

I have been to France a couple of times, to Spain multiple times (yes, to other places than Barcelona too) and Belgium ofcourse. Okay, I have never been outside of Europe, but hey I love it! And also mainly because it's easier to go on a roadtrip than to catch a plane.

Currently in the Philippines for college, so it's quite a trip. Gonna be hitting up Boracay at the end of this week to celebrate the end of finals with beaches, kayaking, and island hopping. Might go to Mt. Banahaw over Christmas break, as it's a spiritual hotspot. Visitors are reported to have visions, encounters, etc. Maybe also Siquijor Island, which has a reputation going back generations of being an island of sorcerers and magicians. Maybe I'm too Willow for my own good. Never could resist the call of some ole black majicks.

As for back in the States, California is where I'm from, though I did a few years in Brooklyn, New York when I was really tiny. Both are great places with their own flavours of people, history, and of course, food. Just, the whole area around New York, the original 13 and all. Gorgeous in it's own way, especially the further North you go. Visit as many old places as you can, take all the historical tours you can. Visit every museum, every monument, every zoo you can.

Florida's great too, though I may be a little biased when I say I feel like California's beaches are superior. Still, I fell in love with the food. And also the JFK space station(are we allowed to say the K word when we're talking about historical figures?).

Canada is also great, and you should all visit Victoria in British Colombia. Absolutely gorgeous, and you should check out the botanical garden, too.

@morningstar, just gonna give the SouthEast Asia rundown, though in your case this is only if you're in Bangkok: Passport, wallets, IDs should be kept in a safe place, not even in your backpack. Most places will sell little sachets for such purposes to fit around your neck and under your shirt. Bottled/filtered water only. If you have dogs at home, be absolutely sure of what you're eating in Thailand. Dogs can recognize if you've eaten dog, even just once. You don't want to come home only to have your furry friend snarling and terrified of you. In hotels, never leave your bags just lying around. If you have a guide, stick with them and be sure you can trust them. Cops are kinda dirty, and if you're found to be a Westerner, will purposely make up some bull excuse to scare you into paying to get out of whatever trouble they've fabricated. It'd do you good to carry a few 50's or 100's, and if anything like this happens, pay them quickly before you get taken to the station, lest you be forced to bribe more people.

But all that aside, the floating market and Chiang Mai are musts! Absolutely gorgeous, and tons of shops. There are also numerous hot springs and beautiful islands. I guess the same rules apply as everywhere else: Be safe and have fun.

Hi There,

There is a thread called the Travel Tips Thread, it's on page 4. The last entry was posted on March 2010. So it's been awhile.

As for where you're traveling I've never been, but I may know someone who has. I'll ask and see if I can provide you with any info.

I've mostly traveled in the States, but I have been to Germany three times. I wish now I'd seen more, but I loved it. There are so many beautiful buildings, and even the sidewalk is amazing! There's English everywhere you go; I tried to learn some German but didn't have much chance to use it, because as soon as anyone knew I was American they talked in English. The mass transit is great, and the trains are quite fun. If you're ever in a grocery store in Germany, buy the waffles-- you will only regret once you realize you've been living on them for days, because they are that delicious. And if you're ever in Munster get Smiley's pizza because it is the best ever.

As for the U.S., I've been to Pennsylvania and Colorado the most and I adore both. There's a lot of gorgeous nature to see. I've also been to New Mexico a few times; White Sands is a must if you're in the area, and backpacking in the White Mountain Wilderness near Riodoso was a wonderful adventure. Beware of hotels in Riodoso if you're under 21 though, as it's almost impossible to find one that will rent to you even if you have cash.

I hope, we'll have more happy ever after
I hope, we can all live more fearlessly...
