Poems that say it for you

Postby thiswomanswork » Fri Dec 05, 2008 1:45 pm

OK, couldn't find a poetry thread other than the ones on Inward Eye that are for poetry we write ourselves, so here we go.
Post poems you find that really strike a chord, that say something you want to say to the world, or to someone in particular.
And since finding this poem is what started me on this in the first place, I'll start it out:

It's not enough to know
that you will walk with me
down the street and not
flinch from the stares.

It's not enough to know
that you do not feel shame
when they look at us and
(it's the playground all over again)
snicker behind their hands
or even not behind their hands at all.

It's not enough to know
that you don't look at my
hodgepodge body
with revulsion
missing what's not there
trying not to see what is
(like I often do)

It's not enough to know
you would defend me
to the death,
me and my right to exist

I need to be certain that you
see me and see magic
love me and love all of me
know me and know your future
to the very end
not in spite of
but because of
who I am.

-Raven Kaldera
I'll be everything that I want to be,
I am confidence in insecurity.
I am a voice yet waiting to be heard,
I'll shoot the shot, bang, that you hear 'round the world.

Not Waving but Drowning

Nobody heard him, the dead man,
But still he lay moaning:
I was much further out than you thought
And not waving but drowning.

Poor chap, he always loved larking
And now he's dead
It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way,
They said.

Oh, no no no, it was too cold always
(Still the dead one lay moaning)
I was much too far out all my life
And not waving but drowning.

Stevie Smith

Great idea for a thread, Sera :)

As an angst ridden 15 year old this poem spoke volumes to me.

Life and Death, energy and peace.
If I stop today it is still worth it.
Even the terrible mistakes that I have made
and would have unmade if I could.
The pains that have burned me and scarred my soul.
It was worth it.
For having been been allowed to walk where I walked
which was to hell on earth,
heaven on earth back again, into,
under far in between ,through it, in it and above

I don't really know if this is a poem or not but feel like it is. I received this as an e-mail from a friend. I'm a hopeless romantic so I loved this.
Sorry ahead of time for the long-ness of it.

I Am This Girl

who will put her head on your shoulder, not because she's sleepy, but because she wants to be closer to you

who likes to be kissed under the stars, more than inside your bedroom or in a expensive restaurant

who loves to end a hug with a kiss

who you can talk to about anything

who laughs at your jokes

who will have many inside jokes with you and remember each one

who will brag about you to all of her friends

who smells like she just stepped out of the shower

who realizes that you say things but don't always mean them

who's heart jumps when you IM her

who really does want to be friends after a break up...not just saying it, but means it

who wants to commit and be your girlfriend, not your hook-up buddy

who loves when you hug her for no apparent reason

who will text you every single morning and tell you good morning and every single night to tell you sweet dreams

who will text you and tell you "you make me smile" just because

who will blindfold you, take you to the beach and let you run your toes through the sand then make you guess where we are

who will show up at your games (or competitions or meets) without you knowing just to surprise you

who will hold you when you're crying and wipe away your tears

who still thinks you're beautiful with no makeup on wearing sweats and a big t-shirt

who won't pressure you to do things you don't want to

who will show up at your house with soup and a movie when you aren't feeling well

who kisses you on the forehead

who doesn't kiss and tell

who actually listens to you when you talk

who's excited all day because i'm looking forward to our date that night

who is content to just be able to hold you and wants nothing more

who can't help but smile when you walk into the room

who's perfectly content with staying in and watching movies and cuddling

who won't lie to you about where she's going or where she's been or who she's been with

who gets butterflies when she hears your name

who's not afraid to tell her friends she likes you

who isn't always trying to act like a hard ass around you

who doesn't care about your imperfections and likes you more for them

who will hold you while we watch the sunset

who really want to make you the happiest girl in the world

that would stop the world to be with you

The Invitation

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living.
I want to know what you ache for
and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me how old you are.
I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool
for love
for your dream
for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon...
I want to know if you have touched the centre of your own sorrow
if you have been opened by life’s betrayals
or have become shrivelled and closed
from fear of further pain.

I want to know if you can sit with pain
mine or your own
without moving to hide it
or fade it
or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy
mine or your own
if you can dance with wildness
and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes
without cautioning us
to be careful
to be realistic
to remember the limitations of being human.

It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me
is true.
I want to know if you can
disappoint another
to be true to yourself.
If you can bear the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul.
If you can be faithless
and therefore trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see Beauty
even when it is not pretty
every day.
And if you can source your own life
from its presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure
yours and mine
and still stand at the edge of the lake
and shout to the silver of the full moon,
“Yes.”

It doesn’t interest me
to know where you live or how much money you have.
I want to know if you can get up
after the night of grief and despair
weary and bruised to the bone
and do what needs to be done
to feed the children.

It doesn’t interest me who you know
or how you came to be here.
I want to know if you will stand
in the centre of the fire
with me
and not shrink back.

It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom
you have studied.
I want to know what sustains you
from the inside
when all else falls away.

I want to know if you can be alone
with yourself
and if you truly like the company you keep
in the empty moments.

I have always loved this poem, there is just something about it for me, about how symbolic the onion is and how its something so random as in a random object to be associated with love but the meaning behind the poem is very apt this poem has always stood out for me as significant and "spoke" to me ever since I studied it when I was 17. I love her poetry anyway but this one takes the poetic cake for me.

Valentine by Carol Ann Duffy
Not a red rose or a satin heart.

I give you an onion.
It is a moon wrapped in brown paper.
It promises light
like the careful undressing of love.

Here.
It will blind you with tears
like a lover.
It will make your reflection
a wobbling photo of grief.

I am trying to be truthful.

Not a cute card or a kissogram.

I give you an onion.
Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips,
possessive and faithful
as we are,
for as long as we are.

Take it.
Its platinum loops shrink to a wedding-ring,
if you like.

Lethal.
Its scent will cling to your fingers,
cling to your knife.
My mother always says that if a person cant say something nice, and be kind then they should not say anything at all.

A Dream Within A Dream

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow-
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?
