I finished reading The Fault in our Stars. 5 Stars! I can not recommend this book enough. I read it in a day, staying up late and crying continuously for the last 1:30. Amazing writing.

Yesterday I read Babylon Confidential-- the first time I've read a whole book in one day in years! I'm not usually a big fan of biographies and memoirs, but this one hooked me from the first page. There was a lot of pain and heartbreak, some interesting adventures, a few laughs, and some real wisdom. I would highly recommend it not just for fans of Babylon 5 (which is a surprisingly minor part of the book) and Claudia Christian but anyone who has first- or second-hand experience with addictions (which I think is just about everyone). As the child and stepchild of two unrepenting alcoholics, it was illuminating for me, and I'm currently trying to come up with a diplomatic way to pass it along to my stepmum.

Started three different books today searching for something to really catch my interest; I think I'm settled on Lisa, Bright and Dark by John Neufield, but I might keep going with A Tale of Two Cities as well. So far Lisa, Bright and Dark is interesting but not quite what I expected, as it's a very external view of Lisa's mental breakdown.

I'm rereading Elisabeth Sladen's autobiography. She was such a great actress and kind, wonderful woman. I know it's easy to idolize celebrities, but reading her book she just seems so genuine and down-to-earth, and everyone who knew her says she was very real and very warm. Hers was the first biography I'd ever read by choice, and now two years later it's the first biography I've ever reread. I love the insider look on Doctor Who, but I also just love the very simple, real stories of life from a woman with an interesting perspective. Yes she's a celebrity I never met, but I really do miss her, and there are moments where reading her talk about her life in the present tense makes me very sad; she died between the time she finished writing and the book got published. The universe really is a poorer place without Lis Sladen.

Allow me to embarrass myself here. I had the *worst* crush on her in the early 1980's. It was a supreme act of fan service when they brought her back for a two parter on the rebooted show.
It was sort of full circle, a closure, for the show I loved when I was 12, and the one when I was 40.

I still have a crush on her and she's been dead nearly 3 years, so what's that say about me! I fell in love with Sarah Jane in her very first scene in School Reunion (the first time she returned in New Who) even though it was the first time I'd seen her and had no idea who she was; seeing the way the Doctor's face lit up, I knew instantly she was magical. So even though I wasn't around for her journeys with the Doctor in the 70's, I really appreciate what bringing her back meant for the show and the fans. Plus, then we got The Sarah Jane Adventures!

Babylon 5 fanfic. Lots and LOTS of Babylon 5 fanfic. I just can't get enough of my favourite ship, now that I've actually found somewhere with stories. I have a test tomorrow and still can't stop reading!

I'm reading the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series by Carlos Ruiz Zafon.

I've just finished The Prisoner of Heaven.

He is a Spanish author with a gothic style. This series is set in historic Spain and he plunges the world in to dark, magic and mystery and leaves you to decide what's real and what isn't.

Others in the series are: The Angels Game, and The Shadow of the Wind.




I also love anything by Paulo Coelho - a very different style!
If you love philosophy, the world, magic/religion and life itself you will love the questions he asks you.
They are very thought provoking and inspirational - along with an interesting story.


Also got my usual Willow/Tara faniction
Loving the RainbowWriters (on fanfiction.net) right now but I'm gutted they haven't finished their story! (it was written a longgggg time ago so don't think there's much hope)

honestly at first I, like many others, thought "what's the big deal? Many female authors adopt a male name to tell their stories" but then I began to think women who've done that has never made a whole serperate identity to conceal the fact that they are women.

Now that I've learnt RR is a man, who tried to conceal and pretend he was a women, makes his books kinda....creepy? Especially when ALL the themes of his books are:

Girl gets kidnapped
Girl gets put into humiliating situation
Girl gets put into a confinement of some sort
Girls tries to commit suicide (Madison fox when she's in trial. Also in the novel Familiar)
Girl falls in love with kidnapper/tormentor

I wasn't okay with it but was curious to that darker side of life from a women's point of view.
Now, it makes me uncomfortable to think that behind these darker ideas isn't a women but a man.

LouCy - I highly recommend The Night Circus. I just finished it the day before yesterday. It's a story of a sort of magical contest between two characters who you meet as a young girl and young boy. And it centers around a circus. Very amazing and beautiful. I hope that it will be made into a movie with real care taken for the sets and costumes.

Now I've started Minimalist Parenting. Sort of interesting read.

I've mostly been reading stuff for school, but I recently picked up the complete Sherlock Homes. I got a Kindle for Christmas, and I am really greatful for the dictionary feature; the vocabulary is a bit difficult for me. Also, reading the original is makng me appreciate Sherlock even more.

The Fault in our Stars in on my list; I even own a copy. I'm waiting for a time when I can afford to go through that emotional experience. (I must read it before the movie comes out!)

I was reading The National Center For Missing & Exploited Children'd guideline on prevention of infant abductions from hospitals, but I think I've abandoned that one (since it was for a project I've finished). Recently finished the VA guideline on Pregnancy, which was pretty informative.

Fabulous book. Funny and tragic and thoughtful.

If you can, avoid reading reviews, the book jacket - basically anything that tells you anything about the book. But if you can't, there's a lot more to it than a surprising reveal.

The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters.

Stunning. (I've just finished it and feel rather like I've been hit by a two by four.)

An amazingly talented author. Her prose is brilliant, but unlike many other 'literary' authors, she combines it with character and plot, (much to the dismay of some reviewers, who shudder at such a low class thing as story.)

When I finished the second book in the series I was determined to wait a while before starting the third (especially knowing there would be no more). My resolve lasted about two hours. Lisbeth is a wonderful character.

Just finished The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. A fabulously crafted story. I'm a big fan of Gaiman, but he continually surprises me with his skill. Just stunning.
