Actually a few pieces of advice one from a friend: "Keep Your basket to yourself"
and the rest from my Mother, during our various mother and daughter "Frappe Fridays" as we call them she is such an influence in my life and I love her very much : "Love someone who loves you more than you love them."
and "Some people are born unhappy, you were born happy so you have to wake up every day and try to stay happy."
"Don't make yourself ill, talk about things, you can ALWAYS talk to me or Lisa" ( my sister)
My mother always says that if a person cant say something nice, and be kind then they should not say anything at all.

Here's a couple of lovely pieces of advice:

1) Don't write anything that you would be ashamed to have read at your own funeral.

2) Disregard the above advice if you want to have fun!

Okay, I admit it - silliness ensued! :blush

This isn't exactly advice but it's worked the same way for me. When I was in college I wrote a paper on "Black Humor in Heathers." I went to a Pop Culture conference to present it and they couldn't really figure out where to put me so they put me on a death & dying panel which was strange. Anyway there was a researcher on the panel who had done a funded (by the Funeral Directors of America or something) research grant interviewing/surveying over 10,000 people about what people said and what was most helpful. What did she find? Across age, religion, race, belief in God, belief in the afterlife, sudden death vs. lingering illness. The only thing that anyone said that ever helped or made any difference was "I'm sorry for your loss." Nothing else... not "they are in a better place" or "at least they aren't suffering" or "I'm sure they are looking down on you..." or whatever. Just "I'm sorry for your loss."

Deb,

That really interested me. It makes sense. People don't want platitudes, a simple acknowledgement and gesture of caring . . . thanks for sharing that.

(forgot my own advice - got caught up in yours)

My mom says this everytime I am having doubts about making a right choice.

I have a few:

1. Never explain. You're friends won't need it, and your enemies won't believe you anyway.

2. Trust in those who offer you service, and you will find yourself in the ranks of those who have been deceived.

3. The biggest risk in life is to risk nothing.

4. Failure is a part of success.

5. Don't worry about people stealing an original idea. If it's truly original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

I don't remember where any of these came from, but they've always rung true for me.

From my Mom to me the day I turned 40:

"Invest in a really good pair of tweezers and a strong magnifying mirror. Trust me, you'll thank me later."

And she was not lying...

“If you've been crushin' on this girl for more than 6 months, it's more than a little crush. Holy crap, Williams. Pull yourself together. Ask the chick out already. You won't shut up about it.”

- My 15 year old cousin. The advice worked.
"Miss Edith speaks out of turn. She's a bad example and will have no cakes today"

I have a fish named Drusilla. He doesn't know, he thinks his name is Drew. Shhhh...

Spike: Are we feeling better, then?
Drusilla: I'm naming all the stars.
Spike: You can't see the stars, love. That's the ceiling. Also it's day.
Drusilla: I can see them. But I've named them all the same name, and there's terrible confusion.

1) sometimes its easier to write what you cant say. But you have to own them words and know if ever the opportunity shows itself you can eventually in that moment say those words to the person you intended them for. if not, don't type it.

2) Days only have significance if you give them it. (takes the pressure way off if you don't celebrate certain events on their actual day.)

3) If everyone is an arsehole, then you are the arsehole.

I contest number three daily. sometimes everyone around you is an arsehole.
