Title – Yield Does Not Mean Stop

Author name – jen rose

Email Addressbrendcat@aol.com

Rating – PG for now, will change later

Disclaimer – These characters do not belong to me. I just checked them out of the Mutant Enemy Library to have fun with. I’ll try to have them back on time.

Summary- The aim here is to have a happy, little AU where Willow and Tara meet and fall in love. It takes place about four years in the future and way, far away from Sunnydale and any Hellmouths or demons. I thought about calling this The Predictable Story, because there aren’t many surprises. Willow works with computers, Tara is still kind of shy, the girls meet, form a connection, fall in love and so on. Hope the lack of originality doesn’t send you running for the hills.

Notes- Thanks to all the great writers who post on this board. You inspired me to give this writing thing a try. I hope no one feels cheated or that they wasted their time. If so, refunds are at the door on the way out. By the way, first fic so be warned.

Yield Does Not Mean Stop

Chapter One

“Come on, come on, dammit,” the redhead cursed at a big yellow polka dotted airport shuttle bus.

“Let me in.” She grumbled as her highway entrance came into view, two lanes over to the left. With a flourish of signals, expletives, and aggressive maneuverings, Willow jumped in the left lane and gunned the rental car to scoot up the highway entrance ramp. This time smoothly merging over into highway traffic, she settled back into her seat a little more. This is the last leg on the trek to parts unknown and new beginnings, Willow tried to romanticize to herself. She didn’t want to face that it actually was the long, three-hour drive to her next job location in the middle of nowhere, which as far as she could tell was in the middle of nothing. Now that St. Louis was behind her, all she could see was countryside, not that is wasn’t pretty, she admitted. It was green, lots of trees and woodsy looking hills. It was a lot different from where she grew up and used to call home.

Don’t be thinking all nostalgic about home, the redhead told herself. I have no home; I am definitely homeless, as in lacking a house. I am road warrior girl. I come to your town, I conquer, and I move on.

Willow bent over the passenger seat to retrieve her CD case and distractedly paged through looking for something to listen to as she zoomed down the highway. She couldn’t decide, really, and finally chose a jazz collection hoping the mellow vocal stylings of Dinah, Sarah, and Ella would help her wind down. Her flight from LA had been a bit bumpy and crowded and worse, late. Enough to have her car rental representative tell her the convertible she had reserved was gone and offering her the lovely, dirt brown Taurus she was driving now. This car looks like piece of s*** on wheels, Willow mused to herself. No, maybe a Baby Ruth candy bar without the nuts, or, hey, a 100,000 Grand bar without the rice crispies. Wait, I know. It really looks like a Milky Way left out in this summer swamp heat too long and stepped on at the end. Yep, that is def. how I would describe this car. She made a mental note to remind her travel agent to have a back up reservation in place for her next trip. Something fun to make these business trips a little more bearable.

“Hey Tara.”

“Hey Tara! What are you looking at that has you looking like that?” asked Bobbie as she peered around the corner into Tara’s office.

Tara hurriedly clicked and closed the window on her computer and looked up guiltily with her shining blue eyes. “Oh, nothing. Uhm, just checking the quarterly sales reports from Jack before I give them to Mary.”

“That good or that bad? It was hard to tell by your look?” Bobbie inquired curiously.

“Oh, its all good,” Tara assured her as she got up from behind her desk and gathered some folders. “Whatcha up to? Need help with something?” Tara paused to look at Bobbie as she came in and sat down. She noticed Bobbie wearing a new pair of slacks and her shiny black shoes, the ones she wore when the managers all went out for lunch with the boss or if she was expecting important visitors.

“Oh, there must be something going on you haven’t told me about yet,” Tara quickly surmised. “What’s up?”

“Got a three o’clock with the computer consultant for the preliminary work ups,” Bobbie explained. “Man, you always know when there is something going on, even when I forget to tell you. How do you do that?” Bobbie loved to tease Tara and joked that sometimes it seemed as if Tara tapped into the power or ESP or something since her instincts were always so on target. She was a hard person to hide things from.

“Aha, that’s right. Your nefarious scheme to make my life miserable and supposedly upgrade the system. You know I just finally figured out everything I needed to know on this one,” Tara played along.

“Yeah, right. Who does Mary come to whenever she needs help and then made me look so good in front of the board giving me the idea to streamline the ordering system?” Bobbie volleyed back.

Tara cracked a crooked grin, “That must have been me and don’t you ever forget it. You still owe me dinner for that.”

Bobbie got up to leave and replied, “Like you’d ever let me forget.” She smiled warmly at Tara as she looked back from the door, “I’m outta here. Gotta bow down to this expert who will tell me how when this system is up it will be bigger, faster, and able to reinvent how we do business. Whoopee! See you later.” Bobbie waved at Tara as she left the office and Tara sat back at her desk.

Yeah, those sales numbers sure made it hot in here. Or was it the multipart romance story she was addicted to that she found on the internet. Thanks, Bobbie, for interrupting me when I got to the best part, Tara frowned to herself. It was good, though. She didn’t realize how late it was and Mary did want those numbers before she left today. Tara clicked on her incoming emails and got back to work.

**********************************************

Oh my God, 200 miles down and how many to go? Where the hell am I? Willow was getting a little bit antsy. She’d been driving almost three hours and still wasn’t in Springfield yet. The car surged ahead and picked up speed as Willow put her metal to the pedal. Or was that pedal to the metal? Which was it, and which one would make this candy bar car go faster? She only had an hour to go before her appointment at the offices of Pro Sports Warehouse, one of the largest sporting good retailers in the country. Lucky for me that such a big, juicy client has their headquarters in the middle of the Missouri Ozarks and not somewhere more convenient like…Timbuktu, Kansas, Willow pondered.

Finally she could see a highway sign coming up on the right. Springfield - 25 miles, it read. Woo and hoo, she was almost there. If she didn’t get lost, she should arrive at the appointment with time to freshen up and prepare her demo materials. She would get there with perfect timing, no need to worry. Plus, Pro Sports had already committed to Willow’s company the purchase of updated hardware to support the sophisticated, new inventory, ordering, and reporting software they had bought last month. It was quite a coup getting this order and then telling her team about it. As she crowed to them, “Thanks for all your hard work everyone, they bought the works!” there was much applause. This was the company’s biggest install of their system yet. And, of course, the biggest paycheck.

Yep, big business deal to do and no pressure at all. Well, maybe a little pressure. A little pressure like it takes a ton of coal to be compressed into a diamond, that’s all. Maybe, I’ll buy myself those nice diamond earrings I saw at Saks if this all goes off OK. If not… well, I guess if it doesn’t go well…no diamonds for me, just a lump of coal. I bet there are still coal miners burrowing under the ground out here in these hills and I wonder if they still keep a canary to warn them of gas and…

“Dammit, tour bus. Let me over. This is my exit,” Willow warned the bus driver she was cruising past immediately on her right. Too bad he couldn’t hear her as she sharply swerved in front of him and did a controlled careen down the exit ramp. Pulling to a stop at the light, Willow checked her dashboard clock and breathed a sigh of relief – 2:30pm. Now all she had to do was turn right, follow her preprinted directions to the Pro Sports offices and her new adventure would begin. New adventure or another job with another satisfied client that would be the client before my next one and the client after my last one. Willow tried to organize her thoughts into the more professional manner she would soon adopt. Hey, liven up here. This is a big job, a great opportunity to get a major reference and totally unlike the last ten installations in the other out of the way places I’ve been. For months at a time. As she made her way through the streets of Springfield and pulled the brown bomber into the Pro Sports Warehouse parking lot, she told herself, “Buckle up, Buckaroo. It’s Showtime.”

***********************************************

“Tara.”

“Tara! Are you listening here? I’m going to need you to review these figures with Jack.” Mary, Tara’s boss and Vice President of Operations, locked eyes with Tara across her desk. She had noticed those baby blues were staring off unfocused towards the window and Mary was surprised she had to request Tara’s full attention back to the spreadsheets she held. “Everything OK over there?” she paused again, slightly concerned.

“O-Oh sure, I’m s-s-sorry Mary. I don’t know what’s wrong with me today,” Tara responded quietly. “Which numbers do I need to check with Jack?”

Mary considered Tara for a moment but then continued, “The first month of the quarter…

Tara couldn’t really hear Mary. She was trying to understand what just happened a moment ago. She was looking over Mary’s shoulder outside toward the parking lot when she saw a flash of red and the strangest feeling came over her. She didn’t think she could describe it if she had to. Something between a constricted breath and a burning between her nerve connections. That was the strangest thing ever, she thought. My ‘impressions’ don’t usually come with Technicolor accents. I don’t know what, but something is definitely up.

…and I don’t think he took the upcoming charge we are going to take with the computer upgrade into account when he was discussing these projections,” Mary finished. “Just check with him on that and let me know what he thinks.”

“OK, no problem. I’ll ask him and let you know in the morning. I think he already went into the conference room for the meeting with the computer people.” Tara pushed back a long strand of golden hair behind her ear and got up to leave Mary’s office.

“Right, and remind him that it is not the number of numbers that counts…” Mary called to Tara as she was headed out the door.

“I know, I know. It’s the number at the bottom that counts,” Tara interrupted, laughing back in Mary’s direction. “Don’t worry, I’ll tell him,” she assured and headed back to her office relieved that she had a little time to herself to analyze her latest impression and steady herself with a couple of sips of Sprite. I’m guessing someone is trying to tell me something, I hope it becomes clear soon. Tara hated having a jittery stomach. And after what happened just now, there were definitely jitters.

Hey, I am more than ready for a predictable romantic HAPPY story. So how come you stopped right before they met ? How cruel of you! I am sure Tara will be able to help "stressed out " Willow relax... or on reflection maybe not! So please... on with the romance.

I like the setup you've created here. Your take on their characters is the most interesting; that's something I always look for closely in AU fic. I love how you've got Willow's mind meandering over her car's appearance, but that she's also decisive and in control. And Tara being the romantic, reading stories on the internet; that's so cute.

I can't wait to read more, particularly seeing as Tara's getting an inkling that something momentous is going to happen.

I loved your style too. The narration was really great; interspersed with just enough dialogue to give us a feel for the situation and the characters in it. You accessed the girls really well; clearly you know them enough to write confidently about them. That's gratifying for the reader to gain from your first chapter, and it's certainly making me want to come back for more.

Thanks for this. :)

Thanks for the feedback

Postby brendcat » Sat Mar 08, 2003 7:44 pm

Thank you all for your comments on this. Of course, I was a bit worried posting this that no one would be moved to say anything much at all. I 'get' that since I have lurked on this board a long time and don't often post. I don't think I will be very good making comments back to everyone, but I am going to anyway since you all were willing to.

screeminguitar -thanks for posting first and saying you liked the start of this. I hope you like it as it continues.

Incitatua 8 -I am glad you are interested in more romance and happies that will be coming soon. Next chapter should be up on Sat night so they will meet. Maybe I need to think more where chapters end. thanks

snuggle79 - telling me a great start is just the kind of encouragement that helps me, being a newbie fic writer. thanks

Stroke of Luck - thanks for saying it is a great great start. I appreciate it and thank you.

tommo - thanks especially for the comments since I admire and love to read your writings. I am relieved you think I have a handle on Tara and Willow because I was worried the direction I was going in would only resonate with me and not others. So, that was a relief that you liked that. What great and encouraging feedback you have given that makes a big difference to the confidence level of an inexperienced wanna-be writer. thanks, Jen

Yield Does Not Mean Stop

Chapter 2

Tara was in the break room making a cup of tea when she heard voices coming down the hall from the conference room. She could hear Bobbie laughing about something with Jack and someone she did not recognize. The unfamiliar voice was light and clear and contained a mischievous note as what she was saying turned into a low chuckle. I don’t know who that is, but what a nice sound. And that laugh – delightful, Tara mused to herself and grinned in response to the hallway chatter. As the group turned the corner and entered the kitchen area, they found Tara leaning against the counter, stirring her tea and smiling.

“Tara, there you are,” Bobbie addressed her quickly, wondering to herself what Tara was thinking about to go with that daydreamy expression on her face. She made a note to ask her later. “I have someone I want to introduce you to.”

Willow stepped up beside Bobbie. Her last step faltered, however, and the heel of her shoe kind of skidded on the tile floor as she felt herself freeze up when she met the eyes of the woman in front of her. Wow, Willow thought. She felt a bit mesmerized by the profound blue depths of them and the mirthful twinkle there. Her field of vision broadened and Willow took in the generous lips curved into an unusual half smile. Her half smile is brighter than…

Tara straightened up immediately from the counter when Willow stepped forward, setting her mug of tea down in one smooth motion and putting her arms out as if to catch the redhead sliding towards her. With a start, the stranger stopped to regain her balance, but not before Tara had automatically grasped her arms to help steady her.

“Uhh, oops, sorry,” the flushed and embarrassed woman apologized to Tara for nearly slamming into her. Tara saw the redhead softly bite her tongue as she slowly slid her arms out of Tara’s grip. She opened her mouth to say something else, but closed it again quickly. Tara was disappointed. She was looking forward to hearing that voice again.

Tara wanted to reassure the woman and injected as much warmth as possible in her voice as she began, “Oh no problem. I am always cleaning up the messes around here, you know…picking up here and there…b-but not usually strange women…” Tara trailed off. That wasn’t what she really wanted to say at all and it was obvious that it did not ease the other woman’s discomfort in the least.

Oh. My. God. Willow’s mind was going at whirlwind speed. What a spaz to practically fall down in front of this goddess like woman. And now it is my turn to talk, and I can’t. Why can’t I speak? Somebody please shoot me. Say something. Oh my God, what is wrong with me? I don’t even know what she said. Her lips were moving but I can’t hear what she said. Her lips…

“Tara Maclay, meet Willow Rosenberg. Willow, Tara,” Bobbie rushed in with the introductions in an attempt to gloss over the awkward moment.

“Willow is from ISS and is in charge of the new computer system,” Jack explained. He nodded toward Willow, “You should see all the things this baby will do when she is done with us. I think it will reinvent how we do business around here,” Jack enthused to Tara.

Bobbie winked at Tara at those familiar words and added, “Yeah, it might even help us keep track of who is buying all those new vibrating air mattresses we just put in the summer catalog, in case someone wanted to know, that is.”

The group laughed appropriately at Bobbie’s attempt at levity and Tara put out her right hand to shake Willow’s counterpart. Unfortunately, it just hung there as Willow looked pensively down towards the floor. “Very nice to meet you,” Tara tried to get the redhead’s attention so they could shake hands.

Willow looked up and blushed even more as she saw Tara with her hand out waiting to shake. She hurriedly tried to catch up to the things going on around her and brought her hand up quickly. So quickly that she didn’t so much shake Tara’s hand, as smack it with her own. Tara reached out with her left hand to steady Willow’s arm and slid her right hand into Willow’s tentative grip. The contact was soft and warm and…very pleasant. Tara waited another moment before letting go and pulling both hands away. She couldn’t help but gaze at the freckled arm she had just held and enjoy the warm tingles that it had sent up her own arm.

Me. Talk. Now. Willow admonished herself. Say something nice. I know you can. You froze a minute ago but that’s OK. You just hadn’t met anyone before who had this kind of effect on you. Pull it together, girl. Willow recovered enough to raise her eyes once more to meet Tara’s. Gathering her confidence back she said, “You must be the Tara I keep hearing about that practically keeps this place running.”

Tara answered with a shy grin, “Well, I wouldn’t exactly put it that way. Especially not where the boss can hear.”

“Don’t listen to her Willow,” Jack contradicted. “Everybody goes to Tara when you need to get something done. Mary was just telling me that Tara is the glue that holds everybody together and if it wasn’t for her…”

“We would be ordering a lot more Elmer’s from Connie in supplies,” Tara tried to quiet Jack. She didn’t need him to make her even more self-conscious than she already was in front of the newcomer. “Willow, just let me know if I can do anything to help you. I am technically Mary’s assistant, but actually more like the general gopher, worker bee type around here. I’ll be more than happy to assist you with anything you might need.”

Woah, assistance. Yep, I am sure I will need some of that, Willow regarded the serene, self possessed beauty in front of her. “Thank you Tara. I am sure I will be coming to you in the future with something. So now you won’t be able to say I didn’t give you fair warning.” Willow gently teased the helpful assistant. She was rewarded with another of those luminous uneven smiles that Willow had a feeling would now be the best reward she had ever been rewarded with. It is definitely my new favorite. Better than the new state of the art laptop she trades up to after each successful job. Tara may not have a state of the art smile, Willow pondered, but more like a priceless work of art. Uh oh, stop right there Rosenberg. You are once again jumping in the fast lane without looking. You should still be carefully merging into traffic with your blinker on after you checked all the mirrors. It is too soon to forget that lesson after that four-car pileup you left back in LA. Slow down.

Tara tried not to be obviously staring at the fresh, sweet face of the redhead, but she found it hard to look away. Tara thought she could see a hundred different emotions passing across that face and she attempted to note each expression. Willow Rosenberg, who are you? Tara contemplated the redheaded riddle, enjoying turning over the possibilities in her head.

Jack noticed the thoughtful silence that fell upon the group and took it upon himself to fill it. “Well, uh…” Jack began, “we are glad we caught up to you Tara. Are you available to go to dinner tonight? We were going to take Willow out to one of Springfield’s finest restaurants to put some meat on those bones and give everybody a chance to get to know each other better.”

“Of course. Mary just mentioned that to me so I made sure I was free,” Tara joined in. “I made reservations at Clary’s for 10 at 6pm. The other manager’s are still going, right?” Tara asked Jack.

“Oh yeah, Customer Service, MIS, Accounting, Distribution, you know, the whole gang will be there.”

“OK, great. I will see you all this evening,” Tara agreed. “Willow, it was very nice to meet you. I hope you enjoy working with this crazy bunch.”

“You too, Tara. I mean…meeting you that is. I guess I will see you later,” Willow took in the lovely features of the assistant one more time before turning and following the others out of the room. Maybe this next 3 or 4 weeks won’t be so bad after all.

I like the charachters thoughts in this fic; Tara being shy, Willow thinking she's a spaz for all to see... and the traffic frustration :) . The way Willow thought about her own hesitations at the end of chapter 2 was interesting, typically Willow in that it doesn't make much sense at first.

I trust we do get an explanation of the 4-car pile-up she mentioned ? Do make sure Tara doesn't eat shrimp at the diner btw. :D

Even if, as you describe it, this story is fairly standard... the way you describe it makes all the difference. You're doing a good job so far, so where is the next update ?? :D

Ah how I love this story! Its wonderful, so well written and the whole concept is just so darn amazing! :) I always fall in love with these AU ones... and the originality of just a simple love story doesn't send me running for the hills :no those are the stories that actually get me drawn into em'. Love it and can't wait for more! :) A lil OT here, I think i've seen you pop in the Elizabeth Hendrickson Board a few times, am I right? :hmm

Great start - really like the characterisations already. I suppose angst is all relative....I mean, with no suspense or tension at all, a story can be just too predictable. They meet, they fall instantly in love, they snog, they live happily ever after! :D

Anyway, this story is looking VERY promising. Look forward to the next part.

thanks for the comments

Postby brendcat » Mon Mar 10, 2003 1:56 am

Thanks for the comments everyone! I hope to have chapter three up by Tuesday.

Stroke of Luck - yep, they sure do seem to like each other. I have to agree with you there. Hopefully the dinner thing will be just the first of more meals together.

Grimlock72 - thanks for checking this story out. There may be more info to come regarding that situation Willow was thinking about.

*geez, sorry. I don't think I'm to good at playing coy with upcoming story details* forgive me.

snuggle79 - I hope the Tara and Willow meeting was memorable. That is def. a key component here. Thanks.

BFR from Paris - I like the AU stuff too. So much so, it inspired me to try one of my own. thanks for reading.

tommo - thanks again. The girls are cute, that is the easy part, isn't it?

xita - hopefully I can keep the girls in character even if I drag them so far away from their usual locale.

MissQuirky- thanks for the encouragement on my newbie efforts here. I figured even if the lack of surprises does make you run for the hills, that is fine too since the story takes place in the hilly Ozark country in southern Missouri. And I do pop in on the AMC boards every now and then to see what is up with Maggie and Bianca. Maybe I will bump into you over there *albeit gently*

TromDeGrey- wow, we are in the same place then, having been mulling over whether to post our stories. I would love to read yours and if the kind folks responding to this story are any indication, you are in good hands to share your work here. Go for it!

ukxenafan- glad you like how this is starting. Like I said at the top, not much in the way of surprises here, but I am hoping to still create some tension and not make it too easy. It is all a journey, right? Or do some lucky people get to skip right to the snogging? :D

Yield Does Not Mean Stop

Chapter 3

A few minutes after six that night, Tara parked her car in front of Clary’s American Grill. After setting the parking brake Tara took a moment to calm her nerves before going into the restaurant. Annie Lennox was on the radio asking “Why,” and Tara couldn’t agree more.

These business dinners were really not her kind of thing. For some reason she never understood, Mary started including her shortly after she began working for her at PSW. Mary said it helped to have another set of ears to hear what was discussed, but that didn’t really make sense since not much got past Mary. Tara admired her boss and enjoyed working for her. Mary was intelligent, sharp, fair, had a keen business sense and took a no-nonsense approach. The only weak spot her boss had was a tendency to be abrupt or as Bobbie says, “just plain piss people off.” That was where Tara really excelled and complemented her boss. If Mary didn’t take the time necessary with one of the managers or blew off what they had to say, it was Tara who smoothed things over. She learned all different ways to deal with each personality and earned everyone’s respect by her professional and friendly manner.

Tara was one of the youngest employees who worked in the executive offices and no one was more surprised than her when she got the well-paying job. She applied partly on a lark but mostly out of need. Her skills were average regarding computers and office experience and she didn’t think she had a chance to fill the position to such a senior, experienced officer of the company. She was called for a second interview and that is when she met Mary for the first time. Tara tried not to be intimidated by the confident woman seated opposite her, but that proved difficult when Mary said she knew Tara had aced all the typical questions during the screening interview. Mary launched questions at Tara covering all sorts of scenarios that ranged from resolving office disputes to procedures during an all out emergency. Tara was relieved that her stutter only surfaced twice and she kept her cool, answering the questions after considering them carefully and applying the common sense her mother had blessed her with. Mary had sat back in her chair, explained exactly what she would expect from Tara, and said she had one more question. Tara braced herself for the ultimate question that would weed her out of the running when Mary asked her, “We work hard around here, but we like to have fun too. Do you think you could have fun working here, because, and don’t take this the wrong way, you look like you need some fun.”

Tara tried to hide her surprise and answered quietly, “Yes, I think I can, and you are right.”

Mary leaned forward and they looked at each other eye to eye. Mary gave a soft nod and said, “I think this can work out, then. If you want the job, it is yours.”

That was over three years ago. Three years that had passed very quickly. Tara had rapidly grasped her job duties, gradually made friends among the staff, and enjoyed her work. One thing she hadn’t expected when she took this job was the personal interest Mary would take in her. Mary had decided she would be Tara’s mentor. At first taken aback by Mary’s generous support and extra effort to teach her the business, Tara had no idea why someone in an important position like Mary would think it necessary to instruct her with anything more important than what to put in her coffee. Tara was used to people telling her what to do and not giving any reasons or accepting any excuses for it to be any other way. It had taken perseverance on Mary’s part, but eventually Tara accepted her help. She finally realized that Mary only wanted her to be as good as she could be, and once she figured that out, their working relationship also became a genuine friendship.

The clock in the car was now reading 6:10. Tara still didn’t feel like going inside the restaurant, and she tried to understand her hesitation. She felt a little nervous. These dinners always make me a little anxious, she thought. Nothing new there. But as Tara sat in her car, her brow crinkled as she examined why this dinner was even worse than usual. Ugh, why do I have this feeling of wanting to just back out of here and drive home? Her stomach was tight and she did not feel the least bit like eating or engaging in the company chitchat that was required. Maybe that feeling I had at work was all about the bad, and was a sign of warning. Maybe that is why I want to take off.

Or maybe… No. I am sure I wouldn’t feel this way just because of that lovely redhead in there who just about knocked me sideways. She would have absolutely nothing to do with me being…scared. Scared? How could the cute consultant be scary? Maybe because I haven’t felt anything like this before? Tara mentally reran through her short lifetime of introductions; people in high school, college, coworkers and clients, the home run slugger for the St. Louis Cardinals… Nope, none of those came with the same little charge like this one did. That has got to mean trouble. As in “Danger, Willow Robinson, Danger.”

Giving herself a mental shake, Tara gathered her purse and finally got out of her car to head inside. Well, here I go. Be cool, girl. You can do this and no one will notice how a certain someone has already gotten underneath your skin.

Willow was seated at a large table in the cool and dark restaurant idly stirring her vodka Collins. She was half listening to the banter around her while she kept an eye on the entrance. Is she going to show? I still can’t believe what a nerd I was. She will probably stay at least ten feet away from me so I don’t collapse on top of her again. I should not go anywhere without putting orange cones around me. Maybe some of that yellow caution tape, too. Or better yet, one of those signs that have the guy falling down warning everyone ‘slippery when wet’. I mean not that I’m wet, well not that way wet. I mean, what the hell am I thinking about? Stop. Thinking. Now.

“Hey there Willow, how’re you doing over there?” Willow hadn’t noticed Bobbie sitting down opposite her. “You aren’t thinking about code, are you? Cause that would just be…insane.” Bobbie joked.

“No, not code. I’m not that insane. At least not that I can let on this early.” Willow stopped stirring and looked up grinning at Bobbie. “I do have to say that you guys have a really great group here. Can’t say I’ve worked with this many managers who actually seem to get along. Or is that just a company paid steak dinner and drinks that has that effect?”

“Hah, you noticed that huh?” Bobbie smiled. She quickly glanced down the table at her co-workers and nodded. “Lots of drinks, actually.”

“Oh, I don’t know,” Willow disagreed. “Seems to me there is more to it than that.”

“OK, you may have something there,” Bobbie agreed in a more serious tone. “But that is something the boss really encourages, you know, team work. Mary insists we do things together that don’t always revolve around work. And she likes to include the families too. The things you have got to watch out for, though, are the mandatory…” Bobbie’s fingers formed air quotes as she continued, “retreats. Watch out for those. If you end up going to one there is usually tons of craziness and a need for secrecy afterwards. I could tell you stories…” Bobbie comically twitched her eyebrows B movie style. “I’ll just say it ain’t too pretty.”

Willow laughed along with Bobbie and sipped at her drink. “Thanks for the warning. Any thing else I need to be on the watch for?”

“Of course.” Bobbie answered quickly. Willow’s brows knitted together as she wondered what else Bobbie would warn her about. “There are at least three managers here who have been keeping an eye on you and looking for their chance to get to, you know, spend some time with you. In a much smaller group, like only the two of you.” Bobbie paused dramatically and then assumed a teasing tone. “You better watch out for those good old boys. They’ve been known to be a handful. And someone like you doesn’t come through town all that often.”

“Oh, I don’t think so,” Willow answered bemused. “And what do you mean, someone like me? Do I totally stand out or something?” Willow’s eyes widened as she considered the unlikely picture of her as a hillbilly bride. Then her paranoia produced the embarrassing image of herself acting all out of place in Springfield. Maybe I am putting off snobby vibes or something. Or else word has already gotten out that the new computer gal is 100% geek material.

“No, I didn’t mean anything by that,” Bobbie reassured Willow. “I was just giving you a heads up that the locals like to try to impress the newcomers. Especially ones that look like you,” Bobbie complimented Willow and watched her shake her head. “What, you don’t believe me? Check out Dylan over there.” Willow’s glance followed Bobbie’s and she met eyes with the Distribution Manager who was watching them. She quickly looked away. “See, I told you so,” Bobbie finished.

“Well I am here to upgrade your system, not increase the population of Springfield,” Willow wanted to end this topic of conversation and took another sip of her drink. When she looked back up she saw Tara approaching the table and lean down to talk to Mary at the other end. Wow, what an attractive skirt she has on, Willow thought. And blouse, and her hair looks nice…oops there I go again. Look business like and not like you are cruising the Executive Assistant. Look away, look away! Willow forced herself to glance around the table and smiled at Bobbie as she hesitantly asked her, “S-so when do you think we will do the overview meeting with everyone?”

“Oh, Mary wanted to get everyone together tomorrow at 10am. Her plan is to get things rolling and try to keep the disruption of the everyday stuff to a minimum.” Bobbie answered, wondering at Willow’s sudden subject change. “Let me tell you what to expect and who will ask most of the questions.” Willow was glad that her question launched Bobbie into a lengthy description of each department’s concerns about changing the system. Just the ticket she needed to get her mind back to why she was really there.

Tara noticed Willow and Bobbie talking as soon as she entered the dining area. She was relieved they were too busy to notice her noticing and made her way to say hello to her boss. Her stomach was still tight and she tried not to look as uncomfortable as she felt. After all, she had attended lots of these dinners and she knew she just had to settle in and then she would be able to relax. Several managers greeted her warmly as she approached Mary and waited for her to pause in her conversation.

“Hello Tara,” Mary greeted her. “I was just discussing with Jack the installation schedule Willow has given us.” Tara’s stomach tightened further at the mention of the consultant. “Will you ask her to come in earlier tomorrow, like 8:30. I have some questions about it that I want to ask her.” Tara’s eyes flickered from Mary and she quickly looked down the table at Willow.

Gosh, that is a nice dress she has on, Tara thought unbidden. She purposefully turned her eyes back to Mary and said, “S-sure. N-no problem.” Mary looked more closely at Tara for a moment as she thought about asking if her assistant was all right. She didn’t often hear her stutter anymore.

Mary decided it was probably no big deal. She knew that Tara was often nervous in social situations. “Great, and make sure you are there too. I will want to have notes in case we change the schedule.” Tara nodded and looked at Jack who gave her a wink.

“And then when Mary has no more work for you to worry about tonight, make sure you have a nice drink and enjoy dinner,” Jack interjected.

Mary chuckled, “Surprisingly, sometimes I agree with Jack.”

Tara smiled at the two of them as she straightened up from the table. She couldn’t resist giving Jack a jab in the back, however, as she walked around him towards Willow and Bobbie. He just turned around and smiled at her. He loved giving Tara trouble.

Bobbie’s face opened up into a big grin as she saw Tara approach them. “Hey girl, how are you tonight?”

“Pretty good, how are you two?” Tara questioned, looking back and forth between Bobbie and Willow. Tara swallowed hard and tried not to look nervous.

“We are doing fine, just great really,” Willow answered cheerily. Too cheery, psycho happy girl. Don’t be too friendly, Willow told herself. Remember, just a colleague here, not crazy gal with boundary issues.

“Great. There is a thing that Mary wanted me to ask you, W-willow.” Tara paused and swallowed again. Her blue eyes met Willow’s green and Tara couldn’t help but stare unblinking into them. It was like looking into a pool of water that was surprisingly and magnificently more clear than you imagined possible and the depths revealed to Tara mesmerized her. “Ah, she would like to meet at 8:30 tomorrow to go over some questions she has about the installation, um, schedule.”

Tara’s question barely registered on Willow. Her mind was too busy measuring the seismic readings her body was sending back after that intense look Tara gave her. Wow, I think that was a 7.5 on the Richter scale. Strong enough to topple reinforced structures and professional demeanors. “Uh, that’s fine,” Willow croaked, reaching quickly for her cocktail and taking a stiff drink hoping no one noticed the stirrer that tried to poke up her nose.

“Hey Tara, sit down by me,” Bobbie invited. “The waiter will be here to take the orders soon. Are you going to get the usual?” Tara gratefully sank into the chair next to Bobbie. She quickly picked up the menu and skimmed it over, keeping her eyes on dinner choices only and not the distracting redhead.

The evening moved on without incident. Tara chose a glass of the house red and did eventually relax as the soothing atmosphere of murmured voices and smooth jazz did the trick. She occasionally joined in the conversation, but more often than not she sat back and enjoyed the discussion going on around her. Her ears were especially tuned whenever Willow added a comment or answered questions; her voice sometimes light and airy other times lower and more resonate. Tara hoped her attempted nonchalant glances hid her intense curiosity towards Willow. As the evening wore on Tara collected an interesting array of stolen glimpses of the redhead.

Willow taking slow sips of her drink, her lips puckering slightly against the glass, her throat muscles moving as she swallowed…

Burned sienna strands of hair catching the candlelight off the table as she turned to speak to Max on her right, the way it brushed her shoulders as she turned back…

The delicate fingers lifting the knife and fork to her mouth to eat, a cute bit of tongue that rounded those lips to clear a bit of butter from the top…

Willow was enjoying the company and the excellent choice of restaurant. She was satisfied that she was getting a pretty good feel for the people she would be working with and was relieved that so far things looked to be going smoothly. Of course there was one person in attendance at this dinner whom Willow didn’t quite have a feel for yet. How can she sit there and be all self-possessed and cool and calm when I’m over here feeling the exact opposite? Can she even see me looking at her the half million times that I sneak peeks? Does she know how sexy she is? Willow considered all these questions and more as she culled little snippets for her ‘Tara database’

Tara leaning back, bending her neck to look up at the waiter as she gave her order. Her cute little brow bunching up in hesitation and then the shy smile after choosing her salad dressing…

Frank making a joke and leaning into Tara to elaborate, Tara pushing her golden hair behind her delectable ear as he whispered into it…

Tara looking at Willow, meeting her eyes as she caught her looking, Tara’s glance skipping down towards Mary and the hint of a half smile twitching on her lips…

Willow took in all this and more as the meal was finished and the group began to depart. Reluctantly, she gathered her belongings, said her goodbyes and got in the rental car to head back to the hotel. The short drive didn’t take long as Willow ran a stop sign and unconsciously cut off an irritated taxi driver before turning into the parking lot. She stopped the car, turned off the engine cutting off Sarah McLachlan singing of angels and second chances, and then practically skipped inside and up to her room. She didn’t analyze how anxious she was for the next day to begin. Willow just knew it couldn’t get here fast enough.

Oww.. I liked the Willow was talking to herself "Stop. Thinking. Now" :)

Also the things they noticed about each other was cute, like mental photo's.

Willow will have to concentrate on the meeting tomorrow though, can't promise things/schedules you can't meet. That is going to be difficult judging by her reactio to Tara's presence in the restaurant :)

After setting a schedule she'll be around for weeks though, lots of oppertunities to to 'meet' Tara again, heh. Figures that Tara would good as social-type problem-solver, she genuinely likes people and thinks all of them are good. (yes, that could cause trouble but lets just assume only NICE people live in that town ok ? :) .

Well holy-missed-opportunities batman: It would have been so easy for Tara to have told about the 8:30 meeting and then thrown out that if Willow wanted to visit before about what to expect (or really any other lame idea), maybe they could meet for coffee/breakfast or something at 7:00?

They are so cute, stealing glances. Good job.

I have to admit that I should be tarred, feathered and kicked in the ass repeatedly for missing this. It's very light and flowing and it was easy for me to fall into 3rd person mode to observe their interactions. I really cannot wait for the rest!

:clap Wow :clap

I've gotta say, I am loving this fic. I totally love where you are taking this...it's really great to watch how different authors create their own AU with a splash of the show, and make it into a beautiful interesting story line. I look forward to your next update.

:applause Oh, how I loved that last update!! I laughed till I hurt over Willow's thoughts. That is SO her! The whole story is so much fun! And thanks for the encouragement with my story too. I've had a couple of really great Kittens offer to look at it and I've had some terrific encouragement from Tulipp too. If you have time, I'll email the beginning to you and see if you think it's worth the time also. I don't want to take time away from this great fic though! Can't wait for an update!!

Once again, thanks for the replies, everyone. Chapter 4 should be up in 24 hours or less.

Raistarr - This is def. gonna be a happy story :)

willntlover - next chapter will start the morning after the dinner. Sorry it took so long to get here.

Grimlock72 - thanks for the comments. Yep, the girls will be working pretty closely together for the next few weeks, lots of opportunities for...whatever.

MissQuirky - glad you like that there is a lot of time spent on what is going through the minds of Willow and Tara. This isn't an action story, so a lot of what is going on is internal. Well, except for later maybe...when they get to know each other better :eyebrow

JustSkipIt - of course there is going to be missed opportunities between these shy ladies. Plus, gives me the chance to stretch this thing out.

Stroke of Luck - Willow and Tara are pretty cute, I hope they come across that way here and also a bit more grown up in the last few years too. thanks.

Kieli - thanks for checking out this story and saying you like it. I have enjoyed your writings and your AU take on things helped inspire me to try it.

daydreamer - very happy to have another reader and hope you enjoy what is to come. thanks.

Taras Shadow - not much of the show in this fic is there? Oh well, the show doesn't do anything for me anymore. Things are much more fun in an alternate universe where the girls are still finding each other, dontcha think? Thanks.

Little M - yippee yah! I love comments on this, so thanks.
