This show isn't on TV yet, but I saw this over at AfterEllen...

New TV Series South of Nowhere to Feature a Lesbian Teen
by Sarah Warn, June 2, 2005

There's a new lesbian teen coming to TV, but this one is on a series aimed at slightly younger viewers than most TV programs.

The N, a nighttime cable network for teens that is a subsidiary of MTV Networks, has just picked up the series South of Nowhere, a half-hour drama created by Tom Lynch (The Secret World of Alex Mack) about three teens struggling to adjust after their parents move them from Ohio to L.A. The press release describes the siblings this way:

Spencer, a 16-year-old, athletic and attractive young girl who never felt like she fit in small town America. She is excited about her new life in Southern California, but begins to question everything--her friends, boundaries, school life--even her sexuality. Clay is the Carlins' adopted, African-American son. He is 17, smart, aware and trying to figure out how he fits into this new world. He is looking forward to connecting with his culture, but finds that being black in L.A. is a test he may not pass. Glen is a handsome 17-year-old who seemingly has the world in his pocket. The star basketball player hopes to keep up his "big man on campus" image and his popularity with the girls.

Over the course of the 11-episode season, South of Nowhere will explore Spencer's coming-out process, as she realizes she's a lesbian and begins to tell her friends and family. The role of Spencer will be played by Gabrielle Christian (American Gun), and Spencer's wild-child best friend and potential love interest, Ashley, will be played by Mandy Musgrave (Days of Our Lives).

What the press release doesn't mention is that the the series is being co-exec produced by Nancylee Myatt, who directed the campy lesbian comedy Wave Babes and created the pilot for the lesbian P.I. series Nikki and Nora in 2002 (which ultimately wasn't picked up by UPN). The first two episodes of South of Nowhere will also be directed by openly gay Rose Troche, who has directed Go Fish and several episodes of The L Word.

South of Nowhere is the latest of a handful of original series to be developed by the network. A sort-of kinder, gentler MTV (it is, in fact, a programming arm of MTV Networks, and currently available in 43 million U.S. households via cable, digital cable and satellite television), the N features a mix of first-run series, like Miracles and Degrassi: Unscripted, and reruns of teen-oriented network TV shows, like My So-Called Life, Moesha, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Content targeted to "tween" and young teen viewers has become increasingly popular in the last few years, as shows like The Disney Channel's That's So Raven and the long-running Canadian import Degrassi: The Next Generation have developed a strong following with kids and parents, and consequently, advertisers.

While gay and lesbian themes have occasionally surfaced on these series (Degrassi in particular has a reputation for exploring edgier topics), South of Nowhere will be the first U.S. series aimed at a younger audience to revolve around a lesbian teen.

The series begins filming in July, with the first episode airing in November, 2005. We'll update you with more details as the premiere gets closer.

Another article about the show on AfterEllen...

Well-Written South of Nowhere Features Queer Teen Girls

by Karman Kregloe, October 31, 2005

Imagine being a 16-year-old girl, transplanted to a new high school in a sprawling new city, and unsure of your sexual orientation. It’s a scenario that isn’t terribly uncommon in real life, but it’s rarely explored on television.

That plot is now at the center of the new series, South of Nowhere, debuting on The N network on this Friday, November 4th.

The show follows the Carlin family, who has moved from a small town in Ohio to Los Angeles. The three Carlin children, Spencer, Clay and Glen are thrown into the fast-paced mix of a Los Angeles high school and their individual (and collective) journeys of self-discovery are kick-started by this exciting and unsettling change of location.

Spencer Carlin (Gabrielle Christian) is a thoughtful and down-to-earth 16-year-old girl who tries to find her footing at the new school by trying out for the cheerleading squad. Her brother, Glen (Chris B. Hunter), is a basketball champion whose joins and upsets the power structure of the current team. Her other brother, Clay (Danso Gordon), is a smart but naïve black kid whose life in Ohio with his adoptive white family has kept him fairly sheltered from the kind of overt racism rampant in Los Angeles. Their parents, emergency room doctor Paula (Maeve Quinlan) and social worker Arthur (Rob Moran), are somewhat oblivious to the culture shock their kids are experiencing.

But the family is closely bound, and we see them eating (and praying before the meal) together and actually talking about their lives with one another.

In the season premiere, Spencer meets (cute) rebellious rich girl Ashley (Mandy Musgrave), a tough-talking and mature sixteen year old with a brazen disregard for conformity. When the two of them hang out in Ashley’s bedroom and share an accidental but lingering touch of hands while lolling on the bed, Spencer notices a picture of Ashley in an intimate pose with another girl.

They don’t discuss the touch or the picture, but a new vibe is afoot in their relationship.

At school the next day, Spencer nervously tries to avoid Ashley. Ashley calls her on it and Spencer admits the dodge, and their budding friendship survives its first test. Later, bitchy head cheerleader Madison mocks Ashley and warns Spencer to stay away from her lest people think they are lovers.

Spencer stays loyal to Ashley, but she is still clearly conflicted about her own feelings. Without specifically mentioning the issue of sexuality she discusses her confusion with her dad. He tells her that this time in her life is all about trying new things, and being willing to make some mistakes. He assures, “Anyone who knows who they are at this age has made their decision way too quickly. Just be yourself.”

When Spencer wisely asks, “What if being myself isn’t what people expect of me?” Her father assures her, “That’s what makes people great. The unexpected."

Spencer’s entire family is mired in the crisis of the move. Her mother is so busy with emergency trauma at the hospital that she is spending less time at home with husband and family, and Arthur is quietly unhappy about it.

Clay seems to be experiencing a different high school life altogether. Unable to get into the classes he needs for college and beaten up by the jealous thug boyfriend of a girl Clay meets, his first day of school is a tough preview of what life in Los Angeles may hold for him. Impressed by Clay’s refusal to back down in the fight, socially-conscious Sean takes an interest in him and is shocked at Clay’s lack of awareness when it comes to race politics.

Life is easier for Glen, who is enjoying notoriety as the new basketball sensation. But his competitor for the starting spot on the team, Aiden (Matt Cohen), isn’t about to relent his position on the team. Their mutual animosity is heightened by Aiden’s obvious attraction to Spencer. To complicate matters, Glen has his eye on Ashley, but is shocked when told “She used to date Aiden. Then she changed teams. She got into girls.”

Glen is quick to bring the subject of Ashley’s sexuality to the dinner table. He tells his parents that he heard that Aiden, “turned her gay.” His father corrects him, “Son, people don’t turn gay. They either are or they aren’t.” But his religious wife begs to differ, “That’s just one opinion. Let’s just hope and pray that his girl finds her way.”

Spencer has listened in silence but finally pops, “I think God is a little too busy to worry about which two people like each other.” Glen adds, “Mom this girl is too beautiful to be gay. She’s probably just experimenting.”

Her mother’s response gives Spencer a hint at the disapproval she herself might one day face, “Life is not an experiment. You get one shot at it, and if you’re not careful you’ll experiment yourself to the grave. Spencer, I think you should find some new friends. This girl Ashley sounds like she could be a bad influence on you.”

Thus the ground is laid for Spencer's journey through the rest of the season, as she struggles to understand her sexuality and her relationship with Ashley in the context of conflicting social pressure at school, and at home.

The show is well-written, and the storyline for each of the lead characters is compelling. While the life of the Carlin family seems idyllic, the differing philosophies of the parents is setting the stage for bigger conflicts down the road. It’s particularly interesting to see how differences of race and sexuality among family members have the power to divide when ignored or mishandled.

Gabrielle Christian and Mandy Musgrave are likeable lead characters and have an easy chemistry with one another. Both play their characters as bold and mature, yet uncertain of their true selves. Having two positively portrayed queer characters on primetime television is likely to make a big impact on queer, questioning, and straight teens alike.

The show pays respect to its teenaged viewers by portraying the young characters as relatively informed about gay topics, even if still conflicted about them. But this isn’t surprising when considering The N’s stated mission to “be the authentic voice of teens and to help them figure out their lives.”

According to The N’s publicity materials, it aims to arm teenagers with “information to help them meet the challenges of adolescence.” The N promotes “tolerance and respect for others, and helps kids build self-awareness and acceptance.”

South of Nowhere is a big step in that direction. Regardless of your age, the season premiere--directed by Donna Deitch (Desert Hearts, Common Ground)—is not to be missed.

Saw the second ep and gotta say this show is looking pretty good. Def agree that Spence and her friend have great chemistry. LOL-at the one girl calling them the "Ellen twins". Can't wait until next week though, Spence and her "it's not a date" date.

I checked with Brian and I knew it! Ashley's dad is none other than C.C. DeVille from Poison. I think for that alone I'll keep watching the show lol. Who else might they stunt cast for this? :p

No, really, I think Ashley and Spencer will make a cute couple once they hook up!

OMG-They reran the hour long premiere yesterday. And wow-it was great seeing Spence with her dad and how close they were. Loved their talk and Spence hinting at what she wants to say and her Dad saying (paraphrasing) "It's better to be yourself, no matter what". Loved all the Spence and Ashley moments, especially when Spence is checking out Ashley's lower back tattoo and Ashley catches her. Kinda surprised at all the history between Aiden and Ashley.

Just saw the new episode and it was good. Wished something more would have happened on Spencer's date, but I'm sure she'll think about it for a while.

Ashley spending the nigh with Spencer's family. It's official, I hate Spencer's mom. Her dad is cool, but she sucks.

What had me LOL was that Spencer's mom thought that Kelly would somehow be a better friend than Ashley. Loved Spencer's jaw dropping reaction when she first saw Kelly in that dress.

Although not wholly Ashley/Spencer-centric ep there were still some good scenes with them. Especially loved when Ashley told of her first sexual experience with a girl and Spencer was there to hear every detail. Next week is looks like a good episode as well.

Yeah, it had some good A/S scenes. I really liked the part where Ashley talked about her first time with a girl and Spencer was there with her, and very interested in what Ashley had to say. Hopefully, Spencer will be able to say the same thing soon enough.

Next week's episode looks really interesting.

The scene with Ash talking about her first time with a girl was hot and I also thought the scene with Spencer talking about her first time was interesting. The look Ashley gave her was priceless! Next week looks awesome!!! I so want these two to get together soon.

Great scenes with Spencer and Ashley. They make such a cute couple, just adorable.

As for the other characters, pretty boring. Glen is such an asshole.

Once again, the preview for the next episode looks awesome. Looks like we're gonna get the first kiss next week :-D

I don't know how I feel about some of the stuff Ashley was saying to Spencer about being gay and coming out. A lot of the time it sounds like Ash is just into girls because it's easier than being with guys. She's always making these "guys suck" comments and "boys are so predictable" and all of that. Sometimes it seems like she's pissed off at guys (the comment she made to Glenn in the previous ep when he couldn't remember his "first time" is another example) so she's going to try it with girls. I'm not making a judgement call on that one way or the other, that's her choice. It just seems like Spencer is in a different place about it all. Spencer seems genuinely confused about her feelings of attraction towards boys and girls. It doesn't seem like her attraction to girls has anything to do with being "dissed" by guys. Some of the "advice" Ash gives Spencer doesn't seem to apply to Spence and what she's actually saying about her feelings. Is Ashley really listening to her?

I know I can't expect much from this show considering but this ep really rubbed me the wrong way for some reason. I wish Spencer had someone else to talk to about her feelings. I think Ashley's intentions are good but she's misguided sometimes.

But, of course, I still hope they hook up because they are cute together. It was so funny when Ashley was driving along trying to coax Spencer back into the car. :lol

Ok-this ep was weird. Well-the Ashley/Spencer/Aiden parts. For the first time I liked all the other storylines as well. But back to ASA-is it just me or does anyone else think Ashley has somehow compelled Aiden to be Spencer's more or less "Am I gay or not" experiment. He didn't seem all that surprised or angry when Spencer/Ashley almost kissed. This ep has me wondering about Ashley-once again in what could and should have been a special moment between her and Spencer she finds a way for some guy to be right there. And when Spencer leaves understandably not wanting their first kiss to be overseen by some leering guy/ Ashley in her 'Hey, if you break some eggs make an omelet" world goes skinny dipping with him. Huh!?!

I don't blame Spencer for being pissed about the whole "triangle" situation and the fact that her first kiss with Ashley was almost in front of a guy they were both just messing around with. I really don't understand Ashley's motivation sometimes.

I know they're just going to drag it out to the very last episode, like Xita said, so I will continue to watch this semi-crappy show. I will put up with anything for a little girl-on-girl action. :blush

Last night's ep was pretty good. Spencer pouting was pretty damn cute. The whole conversation she had with her mom was pretty interesting and very realistic. The end was, by far, my favorite part. I can't believe what Ashley almost let slip out! Oh yeah, and it was really sexy when Ash was talking to Spence at school and Spence was trying to ignore her. Ash kind of pressed her knee against Spence while she was sitting down at one of the tables. That was so hot! :blush I love these two!

Okay, so I think I'm talking to myself in this thread, but oh well. :wave
This past episode (1/20/06) was my favorite so far. I actually liked every character as opposed to just liking Spencer and Ashley. I thought the acting was a lot better as well.

But, back to S/A, didn't Ash look so damn hot in the lockerroom at the beginning? I wish she would have kicked what's her name's ass! It was also way cute how S/A couldn't be away from each other for 3 days and the part where Ashley said, "I never thought anyone would care about me...until I met you" to Spencer, that was adorable! :x I'm really starting to like this show more and more, and I think S/A are so freakin' cute. I hope some of you kittens are still checking it out because surprisingly it's getting better.
