We use the french word for flea too Jay, "puce". But in english, as a pet name, it is Sweetie. :) I mean they are translated the same way.

Oh I remember the etymology of that one from French literature classes when I was younger.

It originates from medieval times, ''ma puce'' being relative to the French ''puceau'' or ''pucelle'' (virgin male/female). There was an erotic game whereby a maid would ask an equally virginal young man to track down a flea which was apparently roaming in her clothes. She would thereby gently guide him...metaphorically leading to their mutual ''pucelage'' (first-time sexual relationship).

Or else, it could also be in relation to ''pulcera'' in the latin context meaning ''ma belle"

Hence the contemporary notion of ''my love'' or ''sweetie'' as Juju said.

Yes, you are right Jay – my spelling mistake :) It's pulchra as you correctly enunciated.

I remembered it mostly because of fond memories from literature classes. We were a bunch of 14 year olds and there was a particularly different sex scene in one of the literary works that had made us snigger and turn in cute teenage-girl types of comments lol...This finally resulted into a discussion on the etymology of love-nicknames in French history.

But hey...thank you ^^

Because of language barriers?
I was pleased to learn some of the italian nicknames you commonly use between lovers. The ''i's'' have a pleasant consonance.

Jay, let me join you in curbing our off-topic notes...:-D
''gater'' or ''mo ti gater'' or even ''mo ti gater coco cheri/e''.....are mauritian expressions used by practically everyone for denoting their sweetheart.

But we also regularly use ''Bebe'' (Baby) or "Jaan" (lover) depending on the religious background.

Thanks nimloth for this very instructive note about "ma puce". Well.. I guess past some level in a relationship it becomes innapropriate. LOL.

And, it makes it even weirder to use it in a friendly way. I mean, I call my sister "ma puce"! Ewwww. lol

I used to call my first girlfriend "bibou" which is a sort of "bébé" which is baby.

What are the odds? Our History teacher made us watch a movie set about in 1600-1700 where the first scene was a young maid seducing her naive and fairly innocent and virgin cousin telling she had a itch and it maybe was a little animal.
I laughed so hard when I saw it thinking of this conversation I had to get my friend to pummel me. LOL
Hmmm pet names so I stay on topic... 'Gigia' which is part of the insane way my friends turned my name to giuggiola, kamikaze, but not as in terrorist, but as the water-chute. On holiday this girl started calling me that cos I was the only girl {and the only person beside another guy} to make the kamikaze standing all the way.

This also set me cracking up with laughter Jay!! I guess we would have been two uncontrolled gigglers had we been following the same class. So they call you 'Kamikaze' huh. Is it the same as a lady killer :whistle ?

On the topic of pet names, a friend of mine likes calling me ''Loulou'' (which may be translated to represent any term of endearment commonly used in the English language)

Speaking of 'pet/friend names', my best friend calls me orange-fleecer, as when he got together with my oldest friend I threatened him to peel him {hence the orange} and that if he dared to hurt her he would have been a chicken {hence the fleecer}.

A majority of my family calls me Nick which is just short for Nicolette. My younger sister and I call each other 'monkey' for some reason and my older sister started calling me 'peasant' after I gave her a sticker that said "You Will Bow To Me".

Actually where I'm from in England it is usual to call people 'chick' usually it's used like 'love' in shops and stuff but my mom calls me 'chick' too. My lovely partner is French and she calls me 'beb' short for 'bebe' and also as a play on another colloqualism which is 'bab' - I call EVERYONE bab. She also calls me chou, amour and Emilie Jolie (my name is Emily - I think Emilie Jolie was a TV show).

I have hundreds of names for her...depends on my mood ;)

The same friend who calls me Loulou also calls me Ti bebouille (adapted from the french words 'bébé' and 'bouille' literally meaning babyface).

In this context, it is but an affectionate, comical and friendly term for baby.
