The Kitten Pub Quiz 5.5 - We Have a Winner!

Postby Paint the Sky » Sun Apr 27, 2008 4:01 am

Some friends and I take part in a pub quiz, and I was wondering if the concept could be adapted to do the same here.

This post is just to canvas interest at the moment.

I was thinking 5 rounds, 10 questions in each, covering various subjects.

Literature/language
Sport
Entertainment
Geography
History

There would be 2 marks per question.

Entry to the quiz would be made on a Sunday, and the rounds posted Monday through Friday.

Teams or individuals would register their interest in the thread. Registration would close when Round 1 is posted.

I would post Round 1 questions in the thread, but answers would be submitted by pm to me before the next round is posted.

This is were I see a logistic difficulty what with the different time zones covering the kittens.

I was thinking I’d post questions 11pm GMT daily, so answers would have to be submitted before 11pm GMT the next day. So perhaps those who want to play could put local time + or – x hours when they submit answers. Basically there would be a 24 hour window to submit answers, and I would delete each round when the next one is posted, changing the thread subject line to announce which round is posted.

I realise that searching the net for answers is one of the pitfalls, but where is the honour in that, so I would hope kittens would get more pleasue playing honestly.

Ranking would be posted daily, and the winner/winning team announced Saturday, with a complete set of answers.

In the event of a tie, the person offering the most money would win, or there would be tie-breaker, the first to post the correct/or nearest to correct answer in the thread would be the winner.

As I said, I’m only testing the water to see if there is enough interest, so please feel free to offer suggestions or help, all comments are welcome.

As much as I would love to suggest it as a weekly thing, common sense tells me that it would be much more suited to a monthly schedule at the very least.

I had considered that the winner compiles the next quiz, cos I’d like to play too, but it’s probably an unfair suggestion, but if this is a runner and someone wants to take the mantel from time to time that would be great.

Mods, if this an unacceptable use of board resources please feel free to slap my wrist and delete the thread.

It never occured to me it was a European thing, I thought quiz nights in pubs/bars were pretty universal. But, yeah, its trivia and general knowledge, and great criac fuelled with afew beers to lower the general level of intelligence.

The format at ours is you pay £1 to enter, choose the stupidest name for your team you can think of, and answer 10 rounds of questions, including a picture round that usally has a cash prize.

The best name we ever gave ourselves was 'and in last place'. It drove the question master nuts when he called out the scores, and we laughed like 10yr olds the whole night.

'...and in first place, and in last place'.

Jay, got your pm. Thanks.

Lol I never thought about 'and in last place'!!! the best that occurred to me was 'nevermind', the question master went nut too, cos to answer we had to call out our name so it was like 'nevermind!' and the guy 'so?' too much fun

we've got tons of bars here in the US that do trivia nights. my friends and i spent every tuesday during the summer after our first year of law school at the local hooters playing a trivia game. we won several wing parties (first place) and hooters swag (second and third). and seriously, we did not go to watch the hooters girls (chicks in nylons and gross orange shorts? no thanks). i'm a trivia nerd, so i'm hoping to find a new place to play in portland.

i'm all for playing this here, though i do wonder if there won't be some difficulty coming up with questions that can be answered regardless of a person's region/nationality, etc.

My parents are both from Ireland (Dublin and Cork), so my family and I do Table Trivia all the freakin time!

Can't wait!

P.S. I was just in Belfast over Christmas. Quite the beautiful city you've got there, girlie.

Thanks for the response you lovely people.

whatmakesyouhappy - we haven't started yet, just canvasing opinion at present, but so far its been positive.

ktv wrote:i do wonder if there won't be some difficulty coming up with questions that can be answered regardless of a person's region/nationality, etc.

I have been thinking of that quite a lot, it could be a problem in the sports round, for example, most Americans would be stumped answering questions about football/soccer, just as us Euro's would have a problem with baseball, american football or basketball type of questions.

I would imagine most people here a pretty good general knowledge, and hopefully after the first quiz any issues like that would be highlighted and sorted out.

I just hope I haven't bitten off more than I can chew

masterjendu -

.

Thankyou. It is a nice city, despite our past problems it's come a long way in the last 10 years. Northern Ireland is a beautiful country, and the people are very friendly, and there is loads to do.

I meet lots of tourists where I work and it's such a buzz to get positive comments from them about the city and the country in general.

Back on topic, after my bit for the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, I'll try and get something together for the week begining 18th May, and we'll see how it goes. If it flies like a lead balloon, then atleast we tried and failed with honour.

Hey all, just to let you know i've started to compile the quiz and will post round one on sunday night 11pm gmt.

I've decided to drop sport and replace it with general knowledge/trivia cos I found it hard to find unspecific questions that give everyone a fair chance.

Also, just to even things up for all the nationalities here I've made the questions multiple choice so you can have an educated guess at the answer giving a 25% of getting it correct.

For example:

In fanfiction what does the term AU stand for?

A. Angst Unfullfilled
B. Always Unfinished
C. Alternative Universe
D. Adult Unrated

Obviously that won't be a real question because we all know the answer is B ;-)

Re: Do you Pub Quiz?

Postby Paint the Sky » Sun May 18, 2008 11:58 am

Hey all. Well I have the quiz completed, so later tonight I'll post round one.

I'll change the title of the thread to Kitten Pub Quiz Round One so you know the questions are up.

The Rules. (Sorry, but there has to be some otherwise anarchy will ensue ;-) )

1. Questions per round will be posted daily at 11pm GMT. There are 5 rounds comprising of 10 multiple choice questions on the following subjects in this order:

Sunday - Round One: Literature

Monday - Round Two: General Knowledge/Trivia

Tuesday - Round Three: Entertainment

Wednesday - Round Four: Geography/Earth Science

Thursday - Round Five: History

2. Answers should be PM'd to me before 11pm GMT the next day ie Round One answers should be submitted before 11pm GMT Monday, Round two by 11pm GMT on Tuesday and so on.

Do not post answers in the thread. One entry per person/team please. Your first answers are the only ones that count, so be sure before you submit them. Any answers recieved after 11pm GMT will be disqualified.

Answering in Round One registers you in the quiz. No entry to quiz after Round One.

3. Questions for each round will remain in the thread for 24 hours and will then be removed and replaced with the next round. The thread title will change to announce each round.

4. I will post the answers to Round One when posting the questions for Round Two along with the current scores. I will follow this format until all rounds are complete.

5. Winner will be announced on Saturday.

6. In the event of a tie, a tiebreaker will be set. To be fair to those involved it will take the form of a 'nearest to' type of question to allow for time zone differences, eg, to the nearest million what is the population of china?

Ok, I think that about covers it. Thanks for the input, and the interest, hopefully it will be fun. See y'all later.
